Great Value - Especially for Beginners.......2007-06-10
This book has been used time and time again by me for training novices, or people switching from 2000 to XP. One of it's most value features (valued by me and my students) is the "Quick Reference" section where you are quickly able to find answers to specific quetions without going through the entire "introductory" or "story" processes.
It is also a useful book for use on-the-job as a refresher and quick reference.
I have purchased at least 30 copies of this book for my computer tutoring business, so I believe that speaks for itself!
Weak attempt from Curtis.......2003-05-29
First off, I must say I'm a big Curtis Frye enthusiast. He has penned some extraordinarily helpful computer books in the past. But, quite frankly, this is not one of them. Not to push the envelope, but, Curtis I'm deeply disappointed by your less than helpful latest effort(if you call it that). I wanted to learn about advanced filters, HLOOKUP, And VLOOKUP in Excel, but came away learning absolutely nada. While the individual Step-by-Step books are great, this insipid collaboration failed to advance my skills, let alone help me one iota.
Better than nothing but not worth the Money.......2003-01-17
I purchased this book, the day I bought the professional edition of Microsoft office for my XP computer. I had previously used, on occassion, Microsoft office for the Win95 system.
I feel I wasted my $ on this book. This book is fine for someone who is new to microsoft office, but it is not a good investment for someone accustomed to using the intermediate level Que books-which I had purchased for microsoft office for Win95.
I would never purchased his book, had the Q books been available to me, but I did not see any Que books on XP in April of 2002.
this book is beautifully illustrated, and so if you are not a computer tech junkie-as I am, perhaps looking at this book will get you excited about computers of today. But I would not recommend this book to anybody but a rank beginner of Windows-esp the WinXP system, since this book does not address the advanced features of the program-which is why I bought the book.
Very good for beginners.......2002-12-20
This is an excellent book for beginners! Even if you think you know how use programs like Word and Access, this book is sure to show you a few new things. All examples and lessons are very easy and small (for ease of mental "digestion") and give you instructions Step-by-Step. Even if you mess up somewhere, they tell exactly what is supposed to happen, thus you can see where your problem is.
I only have a couple gripes. One being that, since I am a web developer, I felt the Frontpage section did not address certain beginners problems. Also, I felt that there was not a plethora of seriously needed information in the Word section, but this could be because it is a beginners book.
All in all, I suggest this book to anyone (although you might do well to get it from the library first).
maybe for the very beginners.......2002-10-22
This book explains not much of Office XP and often it explains only what you don't need. It's so hard to find what to do with XP and above all Microsoft Press is editing a book with nothing in it ! Believe me, Office 2000 was so much better !

The Microsoft Encyclopedia of Networking has a great deal to offer its readers--it's thoroughly researched, well written, and carefully laid out. A more apt title would have been The Encyclopedia of Microsoft Networking, however, since Windows NT, Windows 2000, and additional Microsoft networking solutions are emphasized at the expense of other popular and robust technologies. If you run a Windows shop or just want a reference on hand while you prepare for a Microsoft networking certification test, you'll be pleased by the contents of this book.
Author Mitch Tulloch has done a super job of defining (and, more importantly, explaining) hundreds of terms involving connecting computers to one another, sending signals across those connections, and performing useful work (such as database queries and electronic commerce transactions) with those signals. Entries tend to be long and thorough, often including examples or careful conceptual walk-throughs. The design team that organized this book deserves high praise too, because there are so many ways to find terms that are of interest to readers. (All the terms appear in a table of contents and an index, as well as in alphabetical order in the body of the encyclopedia.) There is also plenty of cross-referencing among terms.
The prime weakness in this book isn't necessarily that it favors Microsoft products, but that it's sometimes actively hostile to competing technologies. Linux is defined as suffering from corporate "reluctance to use free software ... because there is no single company responsible for its development and support," making it suitable only for students who want to learn the Unix operating system. The first statement is a standard Microsoft argument against the adoption of Linux, although it contains some truth. The second statement reflects an error of omission: Linux is suited to such students but also to many other kinds of users. The book, not surprisingly, also lacks an entry for the Apache Web server. So if you're interested mainly in Microsoft products and don't care about these matters, this is a great book. --David Wall
Topics covered: Computer networking, particularly as implemented under Microsoft operating systems, including Windows 9x, Windows NT 4, and Windows 2000. Physical media, protocols, applications, and whole business solutions that have to do with networking are explained in an alphabetically organized series of entries.

Amazing handful guide........2007-03-20
I didn't buy this book, but got it in one of microsoft press' books' cd I've bought. I think it is the 70-350 training kit book.
This guide, which I have only in pdf, is a very useful guide to network admnistrators, devepers and designers. It gives you the exactly information you need about any network protocols, technologies and systems in a short look up.
It's not a networking course, it's a consultant guide. If you don't know about what networking is and how networks work, don't purchase this item, instead, try buying another book. However, if you are a network professional, order it now, because it's helpful when you are learning something new and need explanation about any network protocol. For instance, you are trying to implement VPN in your environment and, suddenly face with the L2TP word. You go to the M.S. ENC. NETWORKING and look for L2TP. The book will show you a clear understandable explanation of how L2TP works and where to find it.
I hope to have helped you.
Just about everything is here!.......2002-11-05
Not only are networking terms covered in this book, but hardware, platforms, standards, disaster recovery components and essentially every reference you will ever need for the industry has been documented and alphabetically sorted in this book. One of the things that impressed me the most about this book is that the descriptions are not Webster-like. In fact if you look up "shared folder permissions" you will find 3 pages and six diagrams that provide not only a definition, but a practical guide for application as well. For example; what permissions are more restrictive, how the permission changes are applied for several different operating systems ranging from Windows 98 and ME to Windows XP and .NET Server, default permissions, application of permissions to groups and even the implications of an NTFS partition.
The part that earned my respect as a seasoned consultant was the inclusion of wireless networking terms and standards. Recently, I have been involved in several writing projects and need to know a little about everything in order to provide my readers with peripheral information about a particular subject. Not only was I able to find information on the 802.11 standard, but the Tullocks' also included information on the variants including the 802.11b, 802.11a and 802.15 standards. In fact, there are nearly twenty pages of wireless protocol and support information. In addition, subjects such as Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) is covered and explained as is frequency hopping and spread spectrum. I certainly did not plan on finding those examples, diagrams and explanations. I found the same level of detail when I needed to search for information on public key cryptography. A detailed description of the different types of keys is provided as is the components that make up the environment and cross-references to certificate authorities, encryption, SSL and digital certificates including X.509 information. There is enough information on PKI that any reader could not only understand but know enough to be able to identify components and talk intelligently on the subject.
Another important aspect of networking that I did not expect to see is the networking commands and tools. For example, all the TCP/IP commands such as tracert, ping, route, rcp, rexec and tftp are defined and explained. UNIX commands are also defined and explained as are Windows 2000, XP and .NET Server commands. Detailed NET commands for Windows networking are also described and explained from NET ACCOUNTS to NET VIEW. For the most part, the commands that received the most attention in this book are Microsoft networking related, but considerable energy was spent in defining and explaining commands from other networking operating systems including UNIX. In addition, information about Apache and Linux is included as are many pages on NetWare and NDS subjects.
Aside from the many topics that I did not expect to see in the book, the topics that should be included in a networking encyclopedia are all there and in great detail. Just about every hardware element from cables and how to build a cross-over cable to fiber-optic, fibre channel, hubs switches and even routing protocols are covered and explained so that the reader can quickly see the benefits and drawbacks of each technology. It would almost seem that an entire section was dedicated to subnetting as page after page is used to explain and detail how and why subnetting is used and implemented. Many tables are provided to explain the relation between the mask and the number of subnets and hosts. The novice should immediately understand the implications of subnetting while the die-hards will refer to the section as a reference.
For those info gluttons..........2002-08-22
I love books like this! This guide has every network reference you can think of. If you are any kind of network administrator, you'll want a complete reference on your desk. When you were in school, you'd have to grab Webster's daily to complete projects or double-check your own work. Well...now that you've graduated into the Geek world, you need your own Geekified Webster's. I use this reference daily to look up terms I've always talked about, but not quite understood completely. And, believe it or not (OK, I'm a Geek, too), I'll sit in bed and just browse the text from time-to-time, picking up something new every time I crack the book.
Thorough, clear, complete, and fun!.......2002-07-04
I must admit some degree of skepticism when I heard about this book. There are already so many good network reference books on the market why would I be interested in one from Microsoft? It's surely going to be biased right?
However, Mitch Tulloch is a respected contributor to the myITforum.com web-site, so, casting caution to the wind, I dove in.
What I discovered is a reference book that is very different than the others gathering dust on my shelf. The language is clear and concise. The graphs are superb. It is well organized. Moreover it it's actually a delight - no, FUN - to read!
While there is a slight Microsoft "bent" to the content it is only to answer the reader's question in a practical way if they are engaged in Microsoft Networking. For example it will define "grep", give you a UNIX example and then explain how to layer in and use grep in a Windows NT/2000/.NET setting.
I have shown this book to my colleagues at work and they are equally impressed with it. It's a "keeper"!
You may have other computer reference books but I would rate this book as one of the few "gotta haves".
Fantastic Reference Encyclopedia.......2002-06-18
If you're looking for information on network types, architectures, hardware, technologies, protocols, concepts, tools, services and/or software, you have to run right out and purchase this book.
This is probably the most comprehensive book on the market today that covers the A-Z of Microsoft networking. This book is a great addition to any technical school library or any administrator's bookshelf. Would-be MCSE's will greatly benefit from this book.
Not only is it easy to navigate, filled with diagrams, tables and great screenshots, each entry in the encyclopedia has an abundance of easy to read in-depth technical information as well as references to other relevant entries.
I particularly appreciate the CD-ROM that I can take with me when I travel and search when I'm in a hurry.

Book Description
New technologies are profoundly reshaping the world around us. Home computers – unheard of two decades ago – now play an intimate role as personal possessions in many people's lives. For some, computer games may be vital to winding-down after a busy day, while for others the home computer represents only work or is a means through which to socialize in cyberspace. Powerfully symbolic of both future and present trends, computers are increasingly seen as essential home purchases. This book is the first sustained examination of the revealing role computers play in our domestic lives. Do computers cause or help to resolve arguments? What role does gender play in negotiating their use? Who spends the most time with the computer? How does the importance of home computers change as we move from childhood through careers to retirement? Drawing upon topical theories from material culture, technology and consumption studies, Lally traces the social life of these machines and provides unique insights into the many different ways in which they are transformed into highly personal possessions. The result is an absorbing account of everyday life in the information age. This book will be of interest to anthropologists, geographers, sociologists and anyone who wants to get to know how their home computer affects their family life.

data structure.......2003-01-14
Though a very good book, most programming assignments require
that the data be entered interactive and not implimented for
list and trees.
Good study guide, but it's no text book.......2000-05-02
Like it says, it's a study guide. Its got great problems if you want to go above and beyond what's challenged of you in class. Author presents each part in a very straight forward manner, but doesnt dive very deep in abstraction.
Schaum's Outline Programming with C++.......2000-04-14
That is very good book for new programmer learning. It is very helpfull.

ok not great only thing I really use is the commercial skip code.......2007-04-25
Ok not great only thing I really use is the commercial skip code which you can find online anyway. If you know nothing about Tivo then this can be a handy reference but if you are more advanced then you can find more and better info on the web with a Google search. And if your that advanced you're probably not reading this review anyway. ;-)
Only the routine........2007-03-30
This book, while very informative offers no more information than the users manual. If you're looking for something more advanced look elsewhere.
thank goodness for this guide.......2005-11-08
Well written and detailed book. This text enabled me to easily upgrade my TiVo's disk, something my box's manual didn't go into in enough dept and simplicity.
many TiVo uses.......2005-01-22
You should find this an easy read, in learning how to effectively use your TiVo. The company has spent a lot of time in trying to make the user experience as simple as possible.
Carter gives hardware tips as to various accessory items you might want to hook up your TiVo to. Plus, you can find out how to use various listings offered by third parties. Notably AOL, which offers a neat Remote Scheduling of its TV listings. Talk about convenient.
For those of you with DVD players, and especially recorders, sections of the book describe how you can hook these up to the TiVo and get everything working with each other. And remembering that a TiVo is a special type of personal computer, you get instructions on how to upgrade its disk. Very good for the heavy user.

Good Quick Start for the Java Collections Framework.......2005-11-12
As an experienced programmer new to Java, I was looking for a quick introduction to the Java Collections Framework, the set of classes and interfaces for working with collections of objects. In essence, the Collections Framework gives the Java programmer a predefined set of data structures including lists, hash tables, stacks, and sets. This book fell into a nice middle ground for me. I already knew about data structures so I was not looking for a textbook. But I wanted something more than a quick reference guide, something with some examples and explanatory text. I found that "Data Structures with Java" fit my needs. As other reviewers have noted, it does contain more typos than it should. Also, I recommend obtaining a copy from your local library, I don't feel that it is a "keeper".
good intention, bad implementation.......2005-01-15
It is true, as other reader attests, that the book has many an error. However, what I don't like about the book is that the author uses the Java API to illustrate all his examples. Yes, this might be easier than to come up with a new implementation, but, is definitely not a good learning tool. I want to know what's behind each implementation so that I can abstract it in my head and apply it to other examples and problems. But for example, how is,
int[] blah = new int(50);
Array.asList(blah)l
going to teach me about turning an array into a linear list or even a string? Yeah Java has the facilities, but it's all behind the fog (API).
One other issue I have is that the author spends way too much time testing the Java API (about two chapters). And further, even as the book progresses, he keeps calling Java's internal, built-in methods and interface.
It's not a bad book for the price, but don't buy it as a substitute for a text book or even a main aid book.
Get 4th Edition.......2001-10-19
This is the first edition, and there seem to be lot of errors. The author's web site states that there is a 4th edition available. I'd wait for that one.

Customer Reviews:
Understand MS' thinking.......2005-05-15
I agree with some of the feedback here. This is not a book for learning ASP.NET. But then the book does state this early on. By all means read my review, even if for an experience, but I wouldn't until you have had an experience with ASP.NET and Visual Studio. To appreciate this book for any benefit you can find from it, go on a course first.
This book is intended only for exam preparation and in places, it serves it's purpose well here. The official Microsoft textbook for the course is just as thick and goes into tremendous detail and manages to use simple language in places. It doesn't convey the exam experience, but then it's not designed to! I made essential notes for the first 10 chapters and, typed up, I have 5 pages. The first 10 chapters comprise 200! The MS textbook has demonstrations, practices, and explanations, which explains why it is so thick.
From what I can tell, in sitting the exam Microsoft don't expect you to be a world class ASP.NET developer. Microsoft appear mainly concerned with ensuring you can concentrate in intricate detail (trying not to scare you: the difference between some understandings is just one word), think according to the understandings and concepts associated with the task at hand (and remember them), and that you are virtually fluent with the tools and the technologies. I wouldn't sit the exam if you haven't played with Visual Studio and made at least a simple Web application. Judging by some of the sample questions, Microsoft assume you have done so and because you gain knowledge in the process, such as realising that a button doesn't have to be coded for other parts of a Web form to work. Programming skill comes with time and Microsoft are kind enough to understand this.
One lesson I drew from a sample question is that I need to read the exam question *very carefully* and study the provided answers with the same care. The exam is multiple choice so the real test is making a judgement call. This is just one of the daily skills involved with programming.
If you know the ASP.NET technology to the dot (at least to the knowledge requirement of the official course book), can read code and follow what its doing (whether correct or not), think programmatically (the science of writing a program), applying all applicable knowledge in the process, and devise a solution provided it solves the problem, you should pass the exam with flying colours.
That's quite a read I know, but then so is this book and only attempt it if you have done a course on ASP.NET. And, in my opinion, only read it to test yourself for readiness; to get a feeler.
Frustratingly Incomplete.......2004-03-22
It looks like the book was rushed out the door. While there seems to be some good information in it, I was repeatedly frustrated with the end of the chapter tests asking questions that were covered nowhere in the book! Then when I did the first of the included Prep Logic tests, some of the answers were opposite of what was stated in the book. If you can't be consistent within the scope of the book it really throws it's reliably into question. Don't plan on using this as your sole resource.
Passed using this book but stay away from prep logic.......2003-12-24
I passed the exam using this book. I use .Net at work and read one intro book before this one. This is a good book and good practice tests at the end of the book tested skills that the exam tested. I actually saw very similar questions on the test. Some of the sample questions did not come from the text of the chapters, which I see a lot of people complain about, but I was OK with that. They do explain in the opening chapter that this should not be used to learn the basics of the language.
One thing to note is that the Prep Logic exams included on the CD are awful. I've tried the ones that came with the 70-305, 70-306 and 70-310 books. All of them had blatant errors. For the 306 Prep Logic I did the first 5 questions and every one of the answers was blatantly wrong. Que really should dump those guys as the Prep Logic quality reflects poorly on their excellent books.
NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO PASS.......2003-11-03
I have passed some Microsoft exams using Exam Cram 2 books as my sole study resource--that will always be the standard by which these books are judged. This book falls far short.
This book introduces you to the various topics on the 70-305 test, but does not cover a single topic in enough depth to be worthwhile. The review questions and practice exams are weak, also.
Excellent for the exam.......2003-07-29
If your goal is to pass the exam then this book is for you. This is not a book to learn ASP.NET. So you should not expect any basic stuff. Read other books to learn ASP.NET then use this to pass the exam. I highly recommend it. I read it and gave the tests at the end and passed in the first attempt.

Customer Reviews:
Very good bok.......2007-05-14
Very good book, full of clear explanations. If you do not have previous experience with Schematic Capture softwares, this book makes it easy to learn how to do it.
Excellent.......2007-03-17
Fair price; quick delivery. Good communication from the vendor. Able to track the entire way
The Best Book Available for PSpice.......2006-10-25
During my undergraduate school, I used this book extensively. It gave me a solid advantage over other students. Other students would still be struggling, after a week of a lab, to do its related simulations, while I used to finish my work on the same day we had the lab. If you want to learn how to use PSpice, this is the book. Its style to teach by example and all the examples are on the CD along with a student version of the PSpice which is good enough for learning purposes.
Outstanding.......2005-10-27
The item was sent very quickly. Excellent condition. Kudos to all who were involved.
Schematic Capture with Cadence PSpice.......2005-10-14
Marc Herniter writes good clear PSpice books. I have three of his PSpice books (including this one).
The book is written in a clear straight forward manner. The program itself is not friendly and easy to use. Possibly, it appears unfriendly because it is complex, powerful and with many good features. The author describes and explains the complex concepts in a clear manner with good examples.
For users who are familiar with previous versions of PSpice that used Schematic to enter a circuit and start an analysis, the book provides direction on how to switch over and employ Capture.
The only reason for only 4 stars is that some of the graphics are poor quality. It is not uncommon to find black text on dark grey background which is difficul to read. Color graphics would be nice, but it may be too costly.
Anyone starting with Capture and PSpice will benefit from this book. It certainly is better than the documents provided by the program originator.
