Even though Jeorge Servantez has 2 awesome grow videos out now, this book has everything you need to know, albeit short on hydroponics, however I guess his second movie takes care of this. At any rate, this is a great reference companion for any grower written by one of the top photographers and growers in Europe who also writes for High Times.

Ive always been hesitant to buy any 'Grow it Yourself' books. There are so many out there and so many opinions. But for years ive heard references to the 'bible' of growing. Finally broke down and coughed up the dough, and was it sure worth it! Anyone that can follow directions can grow great top of the line quality marijuana!

A good addition to a grower's library.......2007-08-19
The information in this book is thorough. Lots of stuff to learn for beginners and experienced growers alike. The only criticism I have is the garish design of the book itself. It also could have been several pages lighter if he removed all of the adverts! Advertising does not have a place in a book like this. If you want to make an Appendix at the end with resources and links then fine, but don't make me wade through several pages of ads for seed companies, fertilizers, and grow mediums.
I actually prefer the Greg Green book better, although the information is not as comprehensive as the Cervantes book.

I've been writing about cannabis for years now and thought I should find out what's going on with cultivation. I do not have a green thumb and I've never really grown anything more complicated than a tomato. What I like about this book is the realistic appraisal of all the challenges related to cultivation. The details about coaxing the plant into existence are splendid. So many growing guides, websites, and magazine articles imply that the process is relatively effortless. It is not. Even when cannabis is re-legalized, I can see that this task is beyond me.
I was particularly struck by all the outrageous hassles that have nothing to do with the plant and everything to do with prohibition. Big sections on security, sea of green growing to keep the number of plants to a minimum, carbon filters for preventing the detection of odors...It's insane. I love that growers have shown such ingenuity and skill, but can't help wondering what they could have done to improve the plant itself if they hadn't spent all this time and energy on secrecy.
Users should read this book simply to further their appreciation of the plant and the cultivators. The book should also get them motivated to work for the repeal of prohibition because each section makes it obvious that cannabis could be better and cheaper if these horticulturists could devote their time to more important matters than avoiding detection.
Non-users should at least thumb through this book. If they can understand that cultivators are willing to endure the ridiculous irritations that prohibition creates, they will know that any attempt to legislate this plant out of existence is doomed to failure.
This is an exciting read.......2007-01-09
I have yet to 'feild' test this books info yet, but I couldn't put it down. I read it front to back right away and have been designing/planing while reading. I never thought I'd get so into horticulture. This book has me really excited about growing canibus becaused it's so much more than putting some seeds in some soil and watering it. There is a real science/art to growing WELL and this book seems to cover it all from start to finish and after. There is practical help for those who wish to grow in countries where it's illegal, (sound advice from experianced people who grow and have done so for years). I haven't read any other books on this subject to compare it too but I am very pleased with this book and feel I don't need another with more info. To say there are a few gramarical errors in this book is an understatment, but I see this as a testiment to the quality of what they have grown, (or at least what the editor was smoking).

The book is quite nice and easy to read. Most of the steps of the growing process are well explained and detailed. However, in some cases some begginers could find difficult to follow the book. Nice pics that help to understand some stuff, but no pics to help with solve the prolems, like nutrients or diseaseas problems...

I have been useing Ed's books for years. I follow his column in heads magazine and Cannabis Culture magazine. He knows what he is talking about. This book is the ultimate handbook. It tells you everything you need to know to get a garden started. I think this book is very easy to follow and is a great buy. Theinformation is priceless. I trust Ed and this book.

I read 90% of this book front to back when I first recieved it. It could have been organized better, and yes it did seem to jump around a bit, but it had some quality information that are the building blocks for the best techniques available.

Good Presentation - Fair coverage of marijuana topics.......2003-06-05
This is an okay reference book. I found this book easier to navigate than Indoor marijuana Horticulture by Jorge Cervantes which is packed with information but not well presented. Between both of these guides I was able to improve on my cultivation techniques but there are gaps still not covered by both works. If you find yourself in this kind of a situation then I recommend that you look for normal botany books on growing. I have a collection of other readings which helped. You might have to go down that route too.
Well worth the read but you will need much more than just these two books.

I wasn't expecting this book to ammount to this much, but it did suprise me quite a bit. As I read through I had found so many new methods that put one of the largest grins on my face ever. The high definition pictures (besides making you drool) gave me much insight as to what I can expect to procure. Even though this is labled as a beginners book, it will walk you through exactly what you need to do, and what you need to know. It felt like being showed how to do basic algebra, and before you know it, you've learned all that and you know some advanced physics. I would highly recommend this book to ANYONE who wishes to start growing the greatest of all plants.

Setting the Record Straight.......2006-07-06
I just wanted to reply to J. Schachter's "The Critic" review of this book, which is spotlighted above. Not only did he omit some crucial info about Jorge's book, but his own statements have been proven false this year.
We now know the US government IS tracking "our every click" on the Internet. He also omitted Jorge's good suggestion that all marijuana growers using the Internet to post about their grows should use a PROXY SERVER. That is how he says to avoid big brother looking over your shoulder, not just getting a hotmail account.
So Jorge was NOT wrong in his statements, but it is indeed this "critic" (who has never reviewed anything else on Amazon.com), who is wrong.
I am an IT professional as well and can say that Jorge's statements regarding the Internet DO BELONG in his book (since so many growers use the Internet to exchange information), and are good tips. It seems the "critic" has an axe to grind since he couldn't be bothered to discuss the main content of the book which is about growing marijuana.
it's an OK guide BUT .......2005-04-02
okay all the typos and grammatical errors got to me too. this book has a lot of good information BUT I too, found incorrect information. Cervantes also contradicts himself a lot because in his articles in high times grow magazine, he says things that are total opposites from the book. i prefer his articles to this book BUT it did have some information that i found helpful. there has to be better stuff out there though.

In 1983 when I first became interested in the subject this book was the definitive indoor grow guide and it still is today and I like Mr. Cervantes style too instead of writing several books and you have too buy them all to find all the information you need he writes one complete book and updates it every few years with new stuff keep up the good work.

This book reads like it was written by a 4th grader. I threw this in the garbage after the first few chapters. There is information in it that I know to be completely wrong, so how could I trust the rest of the information?
The book gets basic facts wrong, things that are easily verifiable to anyone who has an Internet connection. The first part of the book, for some reason, gives you a short history on the Internet, but almost everything in that section is completely wrong.
For example, the author says that the Internet was designed by the government to track your every click, and you can make yourself anonymous by getting a firewall and a hotmail account. Rediculous!
Every paragraph has basic spelling and grammatical errors, making this book difficult to read. The author jumps around topics incoherently, and makes references to things that aren't fully explained.
Save your money and get a better book. This one is a JOKE.
Not worth the heavy price tag.......2004-08-31
This is a two star read for a few reasons. You might not know that it is from the eighties when this book first came out with some updates. The author does not cover any fluorescent lights at all which I think is crazy because these are important for young seedlings and clones. The hydroponics designs are from old nineteen seventies systems that no one uses any more and neither do I. The author says that clones degrade the more you take clones from a clone and then builds a breeding section around this mistake. The nutrient feeding techniques are sometimes untested. The author actually reprints the same mistake that marijuana book author Ed Rosenthal made for solving Mg problems. Do not use the Mg solver. It usually causes lock out and also over feeds them. Only one harvesting method is given out of a possible three or four that you could do. The problem solving plant nutrient problem pictures are interesting to look at in the book and probably the reason to get this book, but do not solve the problem just by identification using these illustrations. You would do better to pay attention to your feeding schedule and nutrient content. Mistakes can be forgiven but this update is not an improvement on the previous book. The shabby design gives the impression that it was done quickly and cheaply. The photographs are not bad but far from quality. There are frequent spelling mistakes and a lot of noise between the pages that brings down the quality of this read considerably. You would do better to make sure that you read up on other books if you decide to try this one out. It will be interesting to keep a copy of this one around just to compare it to the next update because this author needs to change quite an awful lot of the material here. This is a poor update that strongly needs revision.

I bought this for my roommate and he loves it. Its an excellent, stylish guide to many different types of cannabis strains. The book features descriptions of each strain mentioned, along with information on the quality of the bud and the high it gives. Jason King takes excellent photos, and the closeups of the resin glands will make your mouth water, I'm sure.
A must buy for any marijuana enthusiast.

If you love nugget then this is the book for you. It has every thing you'll ever need to know about earths sweetest plat, cannabis. If you need to learn more about how to grow weed or even how to smoke or what to smoke out of then you need this book. But if you're just some one who loves chronic like me you will probly just sit there somkeing a blunt reading about the dankest plants on the earth for hours. Happy burning!

This author deserves at least five stars for his unparalleled effort! The Cannabible is a monumental work that will form the base of marijuana identification in the future. King has dedicated his life to writing about and photographing cannabis. His passion permeates every page of the book. We need more dedicated author/photographers like him. Traveling the world collecting information about an illegal plant is difficult and dangerous. King has risen to the occasion and provided great photographs and engaging text on my favorite plant. This connoisseur-quality book is a welcome addition to my library. My Cannabible II is on the way now!

This is an excellent resource on cannabis genetic's and how cannabis genetic characteristic's are utilized from the male and female plants.. IT IS NOT FOR THE BEGINNER wanting to learn how to grown cannabis, it is for experienced growers and designed for the advanced grower or anyone interested in cannabis genetic's to create their own variety of cannabis. I Lightly read part of this book when i first began to read about cannabis. Boy oh boy was it a handful. This is a very advanced book. If you are simply a toker then i wouldn't suggest this book, but if you are an advanced grower/breeder this is for you.
I would suggest reading other grow material and particularly greens grow bible before diving into this book.
I will have to read it again now that i am a little more knowledgable.

To have gone through this book and come out the other side is a profound experience, like some sort of a futuristic biology class that specialized in the stuff that gets you best baked. I would not hesitate to force any kind of plant lover to gravitate towards this book like it was about a rose bush or an apple tree. It is a progressively deeper and meaningful insight into the world of plants and the humans who care for them. On one page we are getting an illustrated history of the evolution of the cannabis plant and on the next page how to use materials to enhance the genes that make flowers big like they where back in the prehistoric ages. It is unparalleled in the way its advanced scientific information is brought out in a practical and applicable manner to your grow. The best part is that we can have it all now. This is one of the best books about the cannabis plant I have read. It is dedicated to the science of the cannabis plant. There is some advanced growing material in here also but the cannabis plant is talked about for nearly 300 pages without getting boring. You will reference this for life.

This book is a very deep marijuana learning experience.
It is exactly right for anyone who wants to know everything about the marijuana plant. This is a scientific book but not so hard to understand. I would think this book is not just for growers but for anyone interested in the plant.
It has advanced growing information and some really interesting facts and seed banks, cloning and maybe things not really talked about much outside of private circles. I have seen stuff in this book that I have not elsewhere. It is a gem if you really want a unique understanding of marijuana.
I say it is the 2nd Book on your list because like the other reviewer said you should get his other book first if you want to grow. But I see many owning this one also. It is well worth the price for the amount of information.

Spliffs is written in british english so some of the slang may not make sense but don't let that sway you this is a great book. Including practically anything you ever wanted to know about marijuana and the delicate art of rolling spliffs (or joints). I got this book in a clothing store at the local mall, thought it looked like it would be fun to flip through when i'm... umm, spliffed. Great book, better than i had even hoped for. The history is very well done, and i would say its much more fun to look through than say, my copy of the Cannabible. With all the colors and pictures, its definately great to read under the influence, or even sober! Would reccomend to anyone.

The book has a lot of good info, but the author did'nt have to many color photos to follow along with and they keep you hopeing that yours will be just like that, he has some drawings of various grow situations and machines ,, It does cover from the experienced to the begginer it does go good with the other one Jorge 's Horticulture book, between the two you should at least have a better than average start...Peace, Sugo

I was really pleased with the outlook this book gave me on growing medical cannabis. It contain lots of helpful imformation and it simplified my approach to growing Cannabis. SOMA actually speaks of the Cannabis plant with a respect and reverance that is rare in American culture where the plant is categorized negatively and used as a symbol for rebellion. I suggest this book to all of my friends and all those interested in growing and I hope that this kind of reverance for this perfect plant becomes contagious in our society.

I was pleasantly surprised that a such a small book could deliver so much information. I have yet to discover a better book on Organic Cannibis cultivation. Even if you are not growing in Soil or totally organic it will still give you some great growing ideas.

Good book, but not comprehensive.
If you're just starting out and want a good book that covers the fundamentals I would start with either "Grow Great Marijuana" or "The Cannabis Grow Bible". Both are are good introductory books with GGM as a Dummies book and TCGB as a great intro to genetics and breeding.
However, this book makes a good addition to the library and it's worth the price.

..I learned to respect the plant as a living object. I really enjoyed this book. This is not for the beginner but should greatly improve someone who has a basic understanding. I think it's more for turning the hobby into a form of artwork. He teaches you how to look for body language in your garden and grow the healthiest organic medicine you can.
