Straight To The Heart Of Things.......2006-08-03
Mattie has a way to going straight to the heart with his writings. How could a child have had such insight? Could it be that he was an angel sent from God to teach us all the perfect way to live life? The poems are stirring and thought- provoking, and yet are written in utter simplicity. LOVE... the true way of life. This book should be in every school, every home, every library.
Inspirational!.......2006-03-03
What a gift Mattie Stepanek gave us with his writings. I am amazed of the wisdom this young man had. I have all of his books and when I need to find peace I read his poetry.
About Mattie.......2005-09-05
Not sure if you folks know it or not, but Mattie passed away on June 22, 2004, three weeks before he would have turned 14. Christopher Cross's daughter Madison keeps his memory alive at the following website: (...) His books should be an inspiration to us all. Its not so much that his words rhyme or not .... its the meaning of the words that matters.
Words written by an Angel.......2004-09-22
First of all, Mattie was an amazing child, an angel that graced us with his presence. His words, although obviously written by a child, are far more meaningful than anything I have ever read in my life. His message and attitude inspires me to this moment, and I will live my life with his smile in my mind.
To the person who wrote the terrible review... how dare you. You use the words of an ignorant miserable person, and you need Mattie's book most of all. You're honest opinion is one that should be kept to yourself, Mattie passed away this June and he was so much more than just an ordinary child. He was a gift from God and Im sorry that you are missing out on that, its an amazing gift.
Wonderful.......2004-09-22
The book(s)are great, Mattie was a wonderful kid. It's a shame more adults can't be like him, especially the one that wrote a bad review of his book.

Powerfully Informative.......2007-05-29
I could not put this book down. From the very first page I was hooked. The detailed descriptions of another time were vivid. In addition, I feel this book presents possible answers to countless unanswered questions about the life of Jeshua. This is not a dry historical biography. It is alive, and the information as relevant today as it has been for the last couple of thousand years.
Deepening spiritual concepts.......2007-03-15
This book deepens ones insights into the spiritual world and shows that our ancestors had a far wider developed integral-life. Besides the book has a wonderfull energy of the divine mother energy around it. Loved it.
Lost Gospel.......2007-02-09
I enjoyed this book. I value it as an experiential gift from the author, and can hold it alongside the stories emerging about this lost culture in our anthropological findings. I feel very empowered to read how others experience our heritage of ascended masters, and am grateful for the reminder of my own growth and potential. To learn of the culture surrounding Yeshua ben Joseph answered many questions I've carried since my curious mind first began to process Sunday School stories. I also appreciated the author's approach to archetypes and how we hold our full power here.
File Under Fiction???.......2007-01-11
I purchased this book as Christmas approached, hoping to gain more insights into Anna and her remarkable life. The Cayce Readings have great information, also "Life of Jesus Christ & Biblical Revalations" by the Venerable Anne Catherine Emmerich has endless insights into the life of St. Anne. Even the "Lost Books of The Bible" offers better insights. This book is a romance novel of unconfirmed history. Contradicting much of the Information already sourced through Emmerich & Cayce and left Me with an empty feeling, not full of knowledge.
In My opinion, without being all knowing, this is a work of fiction. New Age/Metaphysical is about a more perfect understanding, not a more stimulating story.
Pretty amazing.......2006-09-13
I love this book. Along with another that I've read recently and also rate very highly (The Essenes - Children of the Light), this book has a lot of information about the Essenes. But it also has huge amounts about the life of Yeshua (Jesus), including the many initiations he went through and the events leading up to the Crucifiction. Not so much on spirituality generally as the other one, but it makes up for that in the details of the lives of Anna and Yeshua. It's written beautifully, too. Definitely exceeded my expectations.
Book Description
Mattie J. T. Stepanek lived and died a child, but he had the spirit of a giant. Affected by a rare and fatal neuromuscular disease, Mattie lived almost fourteen years but in that time became a poet, best-selling author, peace activist, and a prominent voice for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Before his death in June 2004, his five volumes of Heartsongs poetry sold more than a million copies.
Reflections of a Peacemaker: A Portrait Through Heartsongs is the final collection of Heartsongs that Mattie was working on when he died. It includes the last poem Mattie penned along with a special collection of unpublished poetry, photographs, and artwork spanning the decade from when he began writing Heartsongs at age three. Culled from the thousands of poems, essays, and journal entries Mattie left behind, the entries in Reflections of a Peacemaker create a portrait of Mattie in his own words. In these poems he explores disability, despair, and death but also the gifts he finds in nature, prayer, peace, and his belief in something "bigger and better than the here and now." The poems are grouped by theme such as playful, stormy, sacred, and final Heartsongs, with each section introduced by a personal tribute from the likes of Maya Angelou, Oprah Winfrey, Larry King, and former President Jimmy Carter.
In the words of Mattie's mother, Jeni Stepanek, who is publishing Reflections of a Peacemaker at her son's request, "In reading these poems we enter Mattie's world and gain insight through a child who somehow balanced pain and fear with optimism and faith."
A portion of the proceeds of Reflections of a Peacemaker will be donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Mattie Fund for medical research to help find treatments and cures for childhood neuromuscular diseases.

The Genius of Mattie Stepanek.......2007-02-15
I own this book, and even purchased a copy for the use by my Alma mater University for their children's collection of books.
This book is the FINAL published book of poems by 13 year old Mattie Stepanek, who died on 22 June 2004 from a rare form of muscular dystrophy: Dysautonomic Mitochondrial Myopathy. He was a genius by intellect, but as sweet as a boy could have been. I recommend this book because of Mattie's keen insight into major human issues such as LOVE, PAIN, SUFFERING, FRIENDSHIP, SICKNESS, LONLINESS, FULFILMENT, DEPRESSION, AND IMPENDING DEATH. By late Autumn of 2003, I believe Mattie surmised that not only was death possible but was probably imminent.
By Dec 2001, Mattie and former US President Jimmy Carter became close friends, and this undoubtedly had an impact on Mattie's later poems. You actually SENSE Mattie becoming a Peacemaker like his childhood idol, Jimmy Carter. This book is more than simply GOOD poetry, but the plethora of photos from his mother's collections give the reader a visual biography of a boy who ROSE ABOVE his fatal sickness and who proved to be an angel in disguise for millions upon millions of people, when the day was Done! A MUST BUY Book.
Angel Among Us........2006-08-14
Mattie's writings have touched my spirit like no other. His wisdom beyond his years and how his books make us look at life, especially our own, in a different light, has to be from God, therefore, making Mattie an "Angel Among Us" in my book.
Life-changing.......2006-08-03
This book is a must-read for all adults, and older children. The amount of suffering this child endured, and yet could find a reason to grasp life to the fullest, is a lesson for all of us. Mattie had a special gift that only comes from God, with messages that are profound. And yet, the messages are delivered in utter simplicity. It will absolutely change your life.
Awesome book!!.......2006-06-21
I got this book last year from my grandmother and really enjoyed it. The poetry was nice, even if most of it didn't rhyme, and the color photos were excellent. This book was an awesome collection of Mattie's poetry from when he was really young, to his last words before he died in 2004. The only thing I wish was in the book was more information on Mattie's brothers and sister, so everyone could know about them as well as Mattie.
Reflections Of a Peacemaker.......2006-05-17
If anyone wants to learn about courage I would suggest this book. What a remarkable person Mattie Stepanic was, his poems will pull at your heart strings as they did mine. It will be a book to treasure all my life, and reread.

Beautiful Books - don't miss the point.......2006-12-25
Mattie never labeled himself a poet - it was others who did that. He simply wanted to share some wisdom from his heart. Focus on this when reading the books and you'll find them beautiful and amazing.
Practice his messages in your life and you'll suddenly find you have no need or desire to debate his merits as a poet because that's his message underlying all: don't judge and label, just accept others for their beauty and difference. Just love one another.
Peace on Earth

He wasn't a very good poet........2006-08-07
I admire Mattie for having the strength and personality that he did. Seeing himself as a peacemaker make me respect him even more. He had a very hard life, and he tried to make the world better. However, in all honestly, some of the poems in this book look like something that would come out of my third grade writing portfolio. If he hadn't been disabled, and didn't have all of the publicity he had, he never would have made it as a poet. This is another example of how society isn't fair. I've been writing poems my whole life, and none of them will ever get noticed or praised, because I'm not, as you would say, 'special.' like Maddie was. R.I.P Maddie. I mean nothing offensive by what I just said, I'm just stating the cold hard facts about society and fame.
About those 1 star reviewers.......2006-04-23
They have not been able to inspire me.
Mattie has, deeply so.
Enough said.
Great Inspiration.......2005-07-25
I believe Mattie was a great inspiration and a talented poet. At age 11, he sincerely new how to inspire and express his thoughts from the heart. He enjoyed sharing peace and giving the gift of hope. Anyone who enjoyed this book would also enjoy the newly release book of poems, entitled Unscrambled Eggs. It is about living your dream and finding purpose. I would recommend both book for poetry lovers and even those who don't read poetry much.
What defines a poet, really?.......2005-05-14
I read this book, and I've given it five stars.
Mattie is a poet - an inspirational one at that.
To the people who think he wasn't a poet, and that the only reason people took interest in him is because of his disease, you're ignorance overshadowed you when you tried to write your review. I ask you this - what makes a poet? Some have said that his poems had no structure and were choppy. Have you read Robert Frost, E.E. Cummings, Dylan Thomas, Shakespeare? Where was there a similar structure in these poet's writing?
A poet myself, I find that anyone can be "labeled" a poet if what they write can mean something to just one other person than themself. And sometimes, a poet can shine in their very own light - without anyone seeing their work, because a poem is just a bunch of words that speak louder than the physical voice.
Words are a powerful force, and Mattie used his words to reach other people, and I thank him. May he rest in peace.
For those who enjoyed the books, I urge you to buy the cd that features Billy Gilman (country singer) on lead vocals performing the words of Mattie in song.

Best Historical Romance I've Ever Read.......2007-01-09
When I first read this book, I had never heard of this author, so I didn't know what to expect. I love to read historical Christian romances and have probably read hundreds of them, but I can honestly say that this one is my all-time favorite. I have reread it about 10 times and it still has me laughing out loud each time I read it. The characters are unique and hilarious as they interact with each other, revealing their own human faults and imperfections, but at the same time using them to change their lives for the better.
Historical Christian Romance.......2006-05-31
If you have never read a book in this series, than you are in for a real treat. There are four historical christian romances in this one book. Each one is just shy of 100 pages. In addition, all four stories are connected in location and character. So the charters you meet in the first story come back in all of the others.
Now for a recap of each story:
1. A girl is judged by the entire town and charged guilty of commiting a sin of which she is innocent. A new astor comes to town and falls in love with her. But she is afraid her past will prevent them having a future. Do they have to move to a new town? Will she ever be cleared of her crime?
2. The sheriff is looking for a bride, little does he know one lady has already named him asa her future husband, but as luck would have it, she is the lsat woman on the earth he would ever want to marry. But all of sudden he can't seem to get her out of his mind. Does the sheriff marry this girl? Does she give up on him and marry someone else?
3. Susannah has a secret, well afew, to be perfectly honest. Her dad sent her to a twon to complete a muission, she never intended to complete. Now her time is almost up and the man that she loves just asked her to marry him in a marriage of convience. Does Susannah mary him eventhough he doesn't return her love? Does her dad ruin her happiness by taking her away from her love?
4. An outlaw has been caught by the town sheriff. She should go to jail but the judge sentences her a three month period of reform where she will learn to be a Christian, and a lady. However, during this time she falls in love, guess with who. . . the sherrif who arrested her. Will they fight thwie love forever? Or will this end happily ever after?
TEXAS BELLES IS A DELIGHTFUL SURPRISE! FOUR BOOKS IN ONE!.......2003-05-01
All four novels in this anthology are connected, and each one has its own merit! Rachel Branigan cannot convince the town that she was attacked and she and her child are labeled because of it. This doesn't deter Rev. Caleb Stone who believes her and loves her and her baby girl. Lawman Lee Cutler keeps wondering why Patience Primrose keeps batting her eyelashes at him - until he discovers she's been reading Emma Hadley's book on how to catch a man! Circumstances, however, bring out the true Patience and everyone is surprised at this happy ending! Susannah Butler is the schoolteacher and the way is not easy for her and Bobby Joe Aaron as family secrets come to the surface and their love has to grow almost in spite of circumstances. Billy Ray Aaron, Bobby Joe's brother, catches a pickpocket who turns out to be a 19-year-old blonde attraction to him! He almost forfeits his job as Sheriff to save her, and all characters come into play in this final story of the four. Altogether, these complete novels are well written and the men and women are very real and three-dimensional - you see them as they really are and they react in wonderfully human ways. I recommend this book highly and I know you won't be sorry to enjoy this inspirational romance anthology. It's even difficult for me to enjoy regular library books now that I've discovered Barbour anthologies like this! I hope you enjoy TEXAS BELLES as much as I have!

Good Collection of Novellas.......2006-01-29
It took me about four hours to read, and boy, was it worth all the time. I loved this collection. I enjoy reading these types of books, but the whole "teacher" aspect grabbed me because that is my dream occupation. I truly enjoy the reading material that this gave me.

But when it is the handsome, kind town boss, Brit, she reconsiders. But a scary man in the town is attracted to Meredith Rose, and Brit promises to protect her. But when the pursuer gets too close, Meredith finds out of Brit's true feelings.
*The only one that was a little slow and boring was the second novella, PRARIE SCHOOLMARM, it was a little hard to understand, due to some Swedish language used to make it seem real.*

Terrific stories!.......2007-09-06
I have owned this book for four months and have already read it twice. It is full of everything a Christian romance should contain.
I have to give Bateman great praise for her novella collection. As a reader of heatsong presents and the barbour novella collections, I have many books to compare this to.
The biggest challenge with this type of book is that the writer is given only 130(ish) pages in which to develop characters and romance. It is difficult to manage and keep it believable. Bateman accomplishes this and much much more. She is able to create realistic, likeable characters, develop a romance that doesn't catch the reader totally off guard, and manages to weave in an element of intrigue or adventure.
This is a collection of wonderfully inspiring, exciting, hope-filled stories that will keep the reader wanting more with every turned page. Tracey Bateman- She has a gift for historical fiction and I hope to continue seeing her books around.
Excellent Book.......2007-09-01
With each book, Tracey Bateman's writing seems to get better. I can't wait to read the next book she publishes.
Still on my mind...........2007-07-20
I love both historical fiction and Christian fiction and this book (set of three stories) has stayed with me the last few days since I finished the last heart-wrenching story of the Riley family. I loved these stories so much that even though I have been a member of Amazon Prime for a long time, I have never taken the time to write a review. I highly recommend this book, and if you want more by the author I also LOVED the Claire series by Tracey Bateman. You can't go wrong here!
Oregon Brides.......2007-05-08
This is another excellent boook by Tracey Bateman. I like her Christian writing.

Gentle times, quiet lives.......2007-04-25
Reviewed by Olivera Baumgartner-Jackson for Reader Views (3/07)
Our lives are becoming more stressful and faster every day. Everything we do, everywhere we go, everybody we meet - actions, sights, sounds, smells - all of this is a sensory overload. Everything has to have a deeper meaning. Everything has to be best. And fastest. And newest. And we need more and more of everything. In this eternal rush it is so difficult to forget what really matters and how little one really needs to be happy.
Janet Lee Barton's audio book, "A Place Called Home," takes us to Roswell, New Mexico. Many of us are aware of the UFO stories connected to Roswell. Well, the Roswell she writes about is a much older one. The story is happening in 1898, to be exact. Roswell then is a small, sleepy community with a bunch of good people living there. Good is a word Ms. Barton uses often to describe her characters. "He was a good man. She is a good woman..." Simple words, but very true - then as well as now.
Beth is taking care of Cassie and Lucas, children of her deceased fiancé, Harland. She cares deeply for them and hopes they will stay with her forever. But fate has other plans. Harland's brother, Jeb, is on his way to get the children. According to his deceased brother, Jeb is not one for settling down. Beth is heartbroken - how could she let the children go? To make matters worse, she is falling in love with Jeb. Will she lose them all? Will Jeb prove his brother wrong and stay?
While this is an utterly predictable story - good people who put their trust in Lord's hands and pray that His will be done should get what they are praying for, right? It is also an utterly charming story. It is refreshing to listen to a story about much gentler, slower times; times when people ordered their merchandise from a Sears & Roebuck catalog and then waited patiently for the delivery, times when frazzled nerves were soothed by a cup of tea, children had impeccable manners and people married for life. Oh, and times when neighbors helped each other with just about any chore.
"A Place Called Home" was a truly heart-warming story, soothing like a good cup of tea with friends. I would highly recommend it to all female Christian readers/listeners, particularly those who are very romantic. Non-Christians would probably enjoy it as well, if they do not let themselves be disturbed by frequent scenes of prayer and devotion.

Mattie Stepanek Still LIVES and Breathes.......2007-02-15
This AUDIO BOOK of spoken poetry is the 4th installment of the 5 original VSP-Published books of HeartSongs by Mattie Stepanek. Celebrate Through Heartsongs is among some of his very best poetic efforts. Mattie Stepanek died on 22 June 2004 (at age 13) from Dysautonomic Mitochondrial Myopathy, a rare form of muscular dystrophy. Mattie was a confirmed genius, but a humble and sweet one who loved God and hated no one. This is a collection of poems that speak volumes about Mattie's wisdom and insights into such difficult topics as: Fear, Love, Suffering, Lonliness, Relationships, Life's Goals/Dreams, and Impending Death. Mattie had the wisdom and understanding of a 52 year old adult.
This audio book of Mattie's poems (in fact ALL of the 5 books) is read by Mattie, himself. He is 100% genuine and 100% endearing! His voice alone, gives the listener marvelous glimmers of his erudite, but very gentle personality.

Mattie J.T. Stepanek was a rare soul and a lesson to all of us. He was a brave and courageous child, who despite suffering from a life-threatening illness that took the life of his three siblings, remained optimistic, and definitely had a wisdom beyond his years.
If this were a rating for the author as a person, then he would definitely rate 5 stars and beyond. However, as this rating is intended for the poetry and for the book, then I have to be honest. The meter and rhythm of the poems are extremely awkward.
While free verse poetry is not intended to have a regular metrical pattern, it is supposed to have rhythm and other poetic devices that make it poetry so that even when it's read aloud, one can tell that it's poetry, regardless of whether or not it rhymes. In all honesty, Mattie's poems sound like prose that has divided up into many lines to look like poetry.
Now here is a role model for our children!.......2004-07-13
I am a single mother of a 7 month little boy, Georgi. My mother bought all of Mattie's books for me to read to my son and I am so grateful to have Mattie's books which celebrate love, tolerance and peace. I will use Mattie's books for guidance to raise a mindful young man who I hope also chooses to become a peacemaker and poet. God bless Mattie and his mother. We are blessed to have known Mattie who inspired so many people. The world is a better place because he lived!
Mattie - May you rest in peace. Some angels will envy you........2004-07-07
I'd never heard of Mattie until I tuned into Larry King one night during June 2004 to watch his show. The show was dedicated to Mattie after his untimely death from muscular dystrophy. All I can say is that I was both moved and inspired. Hearing Mattie (the show was a re-run of his 2002 appearance) read his poetry was just amazing. He saw things in ways that only a child could see. Maybe as we grow up, we look at the world differently, but his vision of the world through his poetry was refreshing and inspirational.
Being a screenwriter, I am always looking for inspiration. I have a young female character that I had developed only so far. It appears Mattie was the missing piece. It seems I was "meant" to watch that show, to take something from it. I will now complete that character by moulding some of Mattie's ideals and traits into that character.
Mattie, in your short life, you achieved more than I think I have in my 28 years on this Earth. I am a dreamer and much of my time has been wasted dreaming. Your illness was was your weakness, but your strenght showed how weak I am. Time is precious and you made the most of your time on this Earth.
With your poetry, you will have the last word. Hopefully we can all take something from your words, that are so simple, but are formed in such an awe-inspiring way. The world is complicated right now. But simple is always best. And you were the best. God Bless.
