When poor James Henry Trotter loses his parents in a horrible rhinoceros accident, he is forced to live with his two wicked aunts, Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker. After three years he becomes "the saddest and loneliest boy you could find." Then one day, a wizened old man in a dark-green suit gives James a bag of magic crystals that promise to reverse his misery forever. When James accidentally spills the crystals on his aunts' withered peach tree, he sets the adventure in motion. From the old tree a single peach grows, and grows, and grows some more, until finally James climbs inside the giant fruit and rolls away from his despicable aunts to a whole new life. James befriends an assortment of hilarious characters, including Grasshopper, Earthworm, Miss Spider, and Centipede--each with his or her own song to sing. Roald Dahl's rich imagery and amusing characters ensure that parents will not tire of reading this classic aloud, which they will no doubt be called to do over and over again! With the addition of witty black and white pencil drawings by Lane Smith (of The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs fame), upon which the animation for the Disney movie was based, this classic, now in paperback, is bursting with renewed vigor. We'll just come right out and say it: James and the Giant Peach is one of the finest children's books ever written. (Ages 9 to 12)
Book Description
Roald Dahl's children's classic will be rediscovered with wonder and delight in this handsome gift edition with all-new black-and-white illustrations by Caldecott Honor Book artist Lane Smith (who also designed the characters for the Disney animated film). How James escapes from his miserable life with two nasty aunts and becomes a hero to his new insect family, including Miss Spider, the Old-Green-Grasshopper, the Centipede (with his 21 pairs of gorgeous boots), is Dahl-icious fantasy at its best"This newly-illustrated edition of an avowed children's favorite has all the makings of a classic match-up: Milne had Shepard, Carroll had Tenniel, and now Dahl has Smith...author and illustrator were made for each other, and it's of little consequence that it took almost 35 years for them to meet" --Kirkus.

Book review.......2007-09-10
Ever been in a giant flying peach? James and the giant peach by Roald Dahl tells about a boy who's parents get eaten by a giant rhino, goes to live with his evil aunts, then rolls away in a giant peach. To begin, His parents take him to the London Zoo when only to encounter a loose rhinoceros. The rhino eats James' parents to leave him on the streets. Then, he goes to live with his evil aunts, Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge. They treat him very badly and don't let him play with other kids. Finally, an old man comes and gives James some magic crystals. Then a giant peach grows, James crawls in the peach to find some unusually large insects. They then roll away in a giant peach in hope of finding a better place.

A fantastic interpretation.......2007-08-27
I bought this for my 5-year old son 3 weeks ago and we haven't stopped listening to it. Roald Dahl has a beautifully warped view of the world, with parents killed tragically, evil aunts and innocent, precocious children. James is a wonderful example. Jeremy Irons brings real range to the interpretation of the characters, so we all - parents and child - find ourselves chuckling as we drive and listen (and will do for a long time to come). A treat for children (and their sainted parents also).
The Best Book Ever.......2007-08-26
James and the Giant Peach is the best book I have ever read! It is about a boy named James whose parents were killed by a rhinoceros who escaped from the London Zoo. Because he no longer had parents, James was forced to live with his two aunts who were very mean to him.
One day when he was working, an old man gave James some magic green beans. If James swallowed the green beans, nothing bad would ever happen to him. James accidently dropped the green beans in the dirt and they disappeared into the earth.
There were eight beans and seven insects suddenly became very large after they ate the beans. James was wondering what happened to the eighth bean. It hit an old peach tree and a giant peach grew on the tree.
James and the insects became friends and they lived in the giant peach together for a day. They all realized that they had to escape from the James' horrible aunts. They cut the peach off the tree and it went rolling away with James and his friends. It rolled off a cliff and landed in the ocean.
After this point, James had many adventures inside the peach with his insect friends. They find a way to escape from sharks, they escape from "cloud men" who throw rocks at them, and finally, they make a way to land safely in busy New York City.
Enjoy all these exciting advenutres yourself by reading this great book!

James and the Giant Peach, by Roald Dahl
Have you ever wanted to fly in a giant peach with insects. The book I read was James bad a giant peach. This is about a rich kid with nice parents living next to kids in a beach. Until his parents get killed. So James has to maove with his two creepy aunts. The aunts are mean abd make James do all the chores. UntilOne day a guy gives James majic worms abd told James that they make things grow or grant a wish. So James tries to wish to bring his parents back so he could go home. But the worms escape and go into this little peach tree and it starts to grow. The next day he wakes up and sees the peach big and go's over there. He starts to make a hole and crawls inside and turns cartoonish and falls to see insects insideand become best friends.Jamesis on his way home NY. Here comes James and the Giant Peach. I like this book because it is adventures one. It was an easy book to connect to the characters. I understand how people feell and see things in the book. There were a lot of cliff hangers. I didn't like about this book is that it had no horror. If you like adventures book, then you should read this book.
a wonderful (occasionally dark) story and an AWESOME audiobook narration by Jeremy Irons.......2007-04-28
After James Henry Trotter is orphaned due to the whims of a hungry rhinoceros, he is sent to live with his horrible Aunts Sponge and Spiker and is miserable until a local peach grows to the size of the house and James sets off on a great journey.
This short book has delightful characterizations: the nasty aunts are REALLY nasty. The other characters are quirky and fun. Jeremy Irons' reading of the audiobook is exceptional. His delivery of Aunt Sponge (with the face that appears to have been boiled) is absolutely perfect.
I especially enjoyed catching glimpses of a couple of Dahl's later stories. When The Giant Peach rolls through one town, it breaks through the wall of a chocolate factory: chocolate fills the street and children frolic in it, "sucking it into their mouths in great greedy gulps," evocative of Augustus Gloop gorging himself in Willy Wonka's chocolate river in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which came out three years after James (1961 and 1964). And at the end of the story, a Chief of Police mistakes one of the characters for "a vermicious Knid"; the Knids return as the principal villains of Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator over a decade later (1973).
If you're buying this for your kids, note that one character does use the word "ass" a couple of times (using it as an insult for another character), two people get run over by a giant peach (thump! thump!), and the book has two Very Nasty Adults. But not ALL the adults are nasty. And this world has some very nasty adults, so there you have it. Don't be an Aunt Sponge OR an Aunt Spiker.

Classic fantasy story.

James and the Giant Peach.......2007-09-10
In my opinion, James and the Giant Peach was not the greatest book, but if you like imaginary things, you might like it. James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl describes a boy who finds a giant peach, and it rolls down a hill and ends up in the ocean; he doesnt know how to get it out. To begin, James escapes from his evil aunts house. He wanted to escape because they were mistreating him. Next, when he is in the middle of the ocean, he comes up with this interesting plan. His plan was to tie seagulls to the peach so they would lift him up. Lastly, he arrives at his destination. Aww the life of New York City. Even know I hated this book, I hope you like it.

Coming to America!.......2006-01-19
One of the more popular works in English children's literature over the last 3 decades is this short classic by Roald Dahl called James and the Giant Peach. Starting in similar fashion as Jack in the Beanstalk, a gigantic peach starts growing in the yard by a house on a hill. Occupying the house is James, a little boy whose parents were killed in a car - zoo accident. James was sent to live with his two nasty aunts who abuse him and work him. The house, by the way, is located on the West coast of the UK.
As the peach grows, James crawls inside and meets a bunch of insects and other bugs who have also grown in size with the peach, such that they are all human-sized now. The peach soon breaks loose, rolls downhill and into the ocean. From there, the peach, and all its inhabitants including James, travels to America. Along the way, James and his new friends have many grand adventures both on the ocean and flying above it with some help of sea gulls. Arriving in New York City, they are treated to a hero's welcome and live their lives happily ever after.
This book is a beautiful story, and has spawned a nice cartoon movie. The story itself has numerous allusions to other works; i.e. the part of James living with his mean aunts is reminiscing of Cinderalla. Likewise, James and his multi-species companions leaving Europe and arriving in New York City bespeaks the immigrant experience. All in all a great book for children and adults alike.

Recommend Highly.......2004-12-29
Roald Dahl has always been one of my favorite children's book authors. His books often are slightly dark, but triumphant in a way that remind you of Lemony Snicket and Harry Potter. In this tale, however, James is an orphan living with horrible aunts. He escapes his horrible existence when he climbs aboard a peach that keeps growing and growing. Delightful in that he gets to live in a peach, and everything in the peach including a worm gets to become James' size as well. Also recommended are Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events and the Emily Cobbs Collection.
Enjoyable tale of a boy who fights for freedom, magically.......2004-08-22
This tale is full of magic, suspense, wonder, and even bugs.
Get half a page in and you already find out where JK Rowling got Harry James Potter's name from (James Henry Trotter is the star of this book). This is such a great book to read to yourself and an even better book to read to your kids. The imagery and the magic are great. The Cloud Men and the rainbow paint are just imaginative enough for little kids to love.
I docked the book a star painfully. It was because Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is so much better than this and there has to be some kind of scale.
James and the Giant Peach is a book you should read; it's a book that tops most peoples' kids' books of all time lists.
James and the Giant Peach.......2003-11-09
This was a great book full of adventure. James had a great life with his parents until they were eaten by a rhinoceros and he was forced to live with his two aunts. His aunts were very mean to him and he was not happy at all with them. One day he met a man who gave him a magic bag of beans. He dropped the bag on his way to his house. The beans caused the Peach Tree to grow very large. James' aunts charged people to come and see the giant peach. James found a hole in the peach and climbed in. Inside the peach James found giant bugs that would soon become his friends. James and the bugs left for an exciting journey inside of the peach.
We thought this book was a great book that was very hard to put down. The whole book left us wondering what would happen next to James. It was full of adventure and would be great to use in the fourth grade for Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Health.
Probably my favorite book!.......2000-05-26
This is the first novel I ever read. I still remember way back in second grade when I started reading this book. Oh boy, what a rush! All these images in my head. It's like getting high! This book is extremely interesting and fun to read. This is the perfect book to give to your child as his/her first book.
it was an interesting book.......1999-04-08
I just read the book called "James and the Giant Peach ".It is about a boy named James. Jameses parents died when James was little, so James had to move in with his aunts that he hates very much. Their names are Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge. James longs to go to the beach and have friends. James and his new friends Grasshopper, Ladybug, Centipede, Earthworm, Silkworm and Miss Spider will go on an adventure they will neaver forget. On their adventure they have to go through alot of terrible frights that they will have to face, like "Centipde falling off the giant Peach" What will they do and how? This book is written by Roald Dahl I have read other books by him and I think he could have added some funnier things to this book but it is still a very good book.If you want to find out what happens read this book.

james and the giant peach by danny and ellie.......2006-06-27
This book is called James and the Giant Peach. The author is called Roald Dahl. This book is a great book for children who love fantasy stories and adventurous stories. This book is an excellent fiction book.
In the first plot outline James' Mother and Father died because of an escaping rhinoceros from the London zoo. While James was getting over the death of his mother and father James got told that he had to go and live with his two horrible aunts.
James has loads of friends called; Centipede, Earth Worm, Silk Worm, Grasshopper, Miss Spider, Glow Worm. James had a very bad relation ship with his two aunts and was very happy to escape.
I think you will have a lovely time reading this amazing book and it is a very funny book. This book is a great book for ages 10 and over. This book is not a good book for children under 5 years because of some of the hard vocabulary.

Roald Dahl's classic children's novel is now a motion picture from The Walt Disney Company, and this version of
James and the Giant Peach grew out of the making of the movie. Lane Smith, conceptual artist for the film, has given James and company a new and arresting look, much in the style of his many highly regarded books, such as Math Curse and The Stinky Cheeseman. Karey Kirkpatrick, the film's screenwriter, created a text that is true to the spirit of Dahl's original, and deftly pulls young readers into the remarkable story. All in all, it's a peach of a book sure to be the pick of every child's bookshelf!
Customer Reviews:
much too scary for preschoolers.......2007-08-23
This crude adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic focuses on the most frightening aspects of the story. Not for young or sensitive kids. The illustrations are dark and disturbing -- even the insects who befriend James are rendered in a menacing way. It may be fine for older kids who love scary stories, but it gave my preschooler nightmares.
fabulous illustration by Lane Smith.......2000-09-04
A crude adaptation of the Disney film version of "James and the Giant Peach". I bought this book solely for the Lane Smith illustrations. Other Smith fans might take a look at the work of Sergei Goloshapov, another great illustrator with a similar, unusual style.
awesome.......1999-07-11
This book is about a boy who lived with her mean aunts and then they grew this peach and his aunts wants to sell it. This book is funny because bugs are talking to James and they traveled.
A weird story about some wierd bugs in a peach........1999-05-20
There was a little misstreated boy named james, who dosen't get fed for stupid reasons. One day when he's out in the garden when a old man walks up to him and gives him some seeds. He drops them and a huge peach grows and he climbs into the peach and the peach rools away and goes over the atlantic ocean. Sounds fantastic dosen't it.
Boring, silly, annoying........1998-08-24
I think James and the Giant Peach is really boring to read. My type of book would be something like Put A Sock In It Percy by Judy Corbalis. Anyway, it's about a boy called James who lives happily with his parents until one night a rhinoceroes eats them up! James goes to live with his Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker, but they are greedy and so in love with themselfs. James meets a man and the old man gives him crocodile tounges! So the man tells James that they are magic and make very good things happen. James drops the crocdile tongues on a peach tree and it turns into a ginat peach with a boring adventure to add to it!

If you're interested in learning or performing the Randy newman songs from Disney's movie, this is the book for you. I already owned this when I ordered it ...... (where it is simply listed as a paperback of reading level aged 9-12) thinking it was a version of Roald Dahl's story. Because I love music, I kept it and passed it on to other musicians.
