Don't be afraid to take the first step; it does get better........2000-09-05
I was already in therapy to learn to cope with my chronic illnesses. My therapist discovered after about six months of treating me, that I was being abused not just physically by my husband, but both verbally and emotionally by my 17 year old step-son who lived with us. This happened because my husband did not and would not stand-up for me. I came across this book one day in the book store, showed it to my therapist, and together we worked on it. Within 6 weeks I was out of the house and on my way to gaining my self-esteem back. So do not be afraid to take that first step. You will feel better about yourself in no time.

I purchased this book when I was struggling with the realization that I was in an abusive relationship. It helped me tremendously to face the truth about my situation, and at the same time this book helped me form an "action plan" of leaving my abusive husband. This book clearly defines the warning signs of abuse and that abuse of any kind, i.e. emotional, verbal or physical is not to be tolerated. In many ways this book gave me the strength to face my problems and to ultimately leave my abusive marriage. If you're a woman reading this review and you think you're in an abusive relationship, please buy this little book and read it thoroughly. It will be one of the best investments you can do for yourself.

Book Description
The Psychology of Female Violence explores the psychology of violent and criminal women. Drawing upon psychodynamic and criminological perspectives of female offending, the link between childhood experience and adult behavior is expounded. The book is divided into three sections focusing upon violence against children, violence against the self, and violence against others. Major topics include: Self-harm; Eating disorders; Physical abuse of children; Infanticide; Battered women who kill.
The Psychology of Female Violence will be valuable to students studying clinical psychology, women's studies, sociology, counseling, psychoanalysis, and criminology, as well as all practitioners involved in mental health and the criminal justice system.
Book Description
Help for the thousands of women who secretly inflict violence on themselves through self-mutilation, compulsive cosmetic surgeries, eating disorders, and other forms of chronic injury.
Customer Reviews:
An amazingly accurate book!!!! Well worth reading!!!.......2007-07-23
The first part of the book provides an explanation of why some women can't seem to get to a good - safe place and stay there. She describes how women may try a variety of therapies and self-help organizations for addictions yet, they don't resolve the issue. For example, they go to Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and that doesn't quite fit, although the information can be helpful. Some women go to cognitive therapy for years and worked on child abuse issues, while it might have resolved a lot, it still may be found lacking. She claims that the term complex PTSD more closely approaches the panoply of problems displayed by trauma survivors yet more needs to be included.
She labels the problem as Trauma Reenactment Syndrome or TRS whose central characteristics include:
1. A sense of being at war with one's body
2. Extreme secrecy as a central organizing principle of life
3. Inability to self-protect, often evident in a specific kind of fragmentation of the self
4. Relationships in which the struggle for control overshadows all else
Miller uses a triadic relationship model between the abuser-victim-non-protecting-presence to explain the dynamics that occur when people continue to hurt themselves even when they know it is wrong.
At one point the abuser and non-protecting presence were external. Later, the roles become internalized in order to maintain relationships. At various times, the self-injurer flips through all three roles. There is no room for a protective presence and therefore one grows up to have difficulty in keeping herself safe.
There are case studies throughout the book that provide clear examples ranging from child torture to an over-tending grandparent. Some of these are rather graphic, but to understand the problem, it is necessary to see its depth and the reasons for the resilience to therapy.
The second part of the text discusses therapeutic solutions. It is not written as convincingly as the first part. It gives the impression that the author may be still trying to determine the best therapeutic method.
What Miller comes up with is a method based on an outer ring, middle ring and center ring. Each ring represents the level of knowledge gathering and revelation that takes place between the therapist and the client, with the center being the most intense.
What is understood is that the therapist is doomed to failure if they push for information too quickly. There must be a deepening trust along with an understanding off rules and procedures between the therapist and the client before dealing with the core issues. If a client were to enter therapy to primarily deal with sexual abuse issues, the therapist should slow the process until a necessary rapport and trust relationship has been developed.
I would recommend this book highly to women who have been in recovery for some time and are still wondering why it isn't working. I think all therapists should read this book to get a more in depth understanding of Trauma Reenactment Syndrome.
not what I was expcecting.......2007-04-27
When I started to read this book I tried to keep an open mind but I myself do SI and felt that the author really did not have a good understanding of exactly what is happingig with a person who does self injure. I did not disagree about everything he said, somethings I think that everyone can agree on regarding why and the emotions behind the destructive behavior. The author tries to take things one step further explaining why people with these self destructive behaviors do what they do but I just felt he was way off. Also it bothered be that the continually used the term self mutilation which is offending for those of us that do practice SI and it seems to me that had he understood more about the behavior he would use another term. I am not saying this book is not at all helpful maybe it was just not what I was expecting or looking for
Self abusive, please read..........2006-09-01
This books speaks so clearly to me, I wish I had read it sooner. I have been through inpatient and outpatient treatment for bulimia and drinking and have not been able to stop hurting myself. The relief, pleasure, pain, release, comfort, numbness, and odd excitement I feel from hurting myself has never been explained so impressively as in Ms. Miller's book. If you think that you might be a woman who in whatever way keeps reverting to abusing herself for release, relief, comfort, or just to keep your sanity, I highly recommend this book. It will not cure you, but it gives great insight and has helped me feel less out of control in many ways. I can now see why I act in certain ways (i.e. try so hard to be close to someone them continuosly push them away, and more). There is more out there than the 12 steps, part of which is really understanding yourself, not just blindly adhereing to societies rules.
Are you sure you're okey? .......2006-04-28
Well, I could read about lost souls of stangers before it finaly came to me. I wouldn't belive it at first hint, but couldn't resist it in the next chapter, Self-Protection. My "Triadic Self" was revealed in every single line before I realised the shickness of many friends. It's a shocking fact for many of us living our lives as we like to think we all know something about everything. When we do not understand everything, either the facts or events behind them. This book is a surprise for people who think they know why "Howard" was so bad to them. And for those who are not sure. It's with short true stories intertwined with hope and understanding. It's like a bare cold fact waiting to enter the souls of people in mental warfare. Who are lost and found in twisted hearts, sometimes. As a way of salvation somehow, but shocking in the same time. It's big as it's small and beyond.
I highly recommend this book!.......2005-02-26
Dusty Miller has done an exceptional job of diagnosing outside of the box. Far too often therapists and others in the counselling field misdiagnose and mistreat those who are suffering from TRS. This book offers hope to those who inflict pain upon themselves by outlining the limitless forms in which the abuse can manifest itself. She makes women who hurt themselves feel less alone. I would highly recommend this book.

Book Description
It might start with an innocent exploration of chat rooms, or a stab at an interactive multiuser game. But the Internet, for many Americans, has the potential to become an addiction that wreaks havoc at home, work, school, and in real-life relationships. The author, an expert on Internet addiction, began researching obsessive online behavior when he noticed that an increasing number of couples seeking marriage counseling were suffering from cyberspace-related problems.
Virtual Addiction includes 12 warning signs of Internet abuse, steps for addicts to change behavior, and advice for compulsive online shoppers and stock traders.
Customer Reviews:
What a great book if you don't have issues.......2002-07-24
Well I thought this book great. In reading the review of the person who didn't like it, unfortunately I think they were not ready to learn from it...sounds like a few issues that need to be worked otu. The book is titled for what the terms fellow webers call themselves (and it is a way for them to relate to the book and feel like this person knows them) and as the title says "and Those Who Love Them"...which is why the book goes so deeply into explaining chat rooms and the such. I would get the book, if only to try out some of the exercises and go from there.
totally helpful!.......1999-12-09
i'm grateful to the author for offering such a comprehensive guide to net addiction. i picked it up because my brother just got a divorce because of his addiction to the internet. (also, the title and the cool cover really caught my attention.)once i'd read 10 or so pages i was completely absorbed. the writing is above-average for a self-help book, and the chapters have lively examples and practical help. i plan on buying it for my entire family for xmas!
finally my internet use makes sense.......1999-12-08
As a technophobe, I had never expected to spend the kind of time online that I do. Dr. Greenfield's book helped me to finally understand why I was so drawn to this world, and whether or not I truly had a problem. I respectfully disagree with the previous reviewer. How much is too much is a very complicated question, especially in light of the mainstreaming of the net. But I think the author manages to answer it gracefully and intelligently, and offer some sensible steps for change. I recommend this book without hesitation.
This book says a lot of nothing!.......1999-12-04
The title is relatively offensive and derogatory towards people who are addicted to the Internet. To call Internet-addicted users "cyberfreaks" or "netheads" minimizes the serious impact of what this condition does to people's personal and professional lives. However, despite the improper book title, I was hopeful the book would offer quality guidance for those who suffer from net addiction. But to my great disappointment, the book was full of dull, academic, and general theory about models of chemical dependency without any genuine attempt to understand how the Internet addiction differs from other compulsive disorders. While some of the chapters ended with brief checklists, none offered any concrete, constructive, and detailed exercises to help sufferers cope with the problem. Furthermore, the book is quite remedial as the author wastes a great deal of time to describe each Internet application (e.g., The Web, Chat Rooms, Newsgroups), as if readers would not already understand what many of these functions are from previous online exposure. The book is not enlightening and does not offer much more than would be common sense to an average person. Through his writing, Dr. Greenfield not only reveals his lack of Internet knowledge but shows that he clearly does not know his own subject matter. He bases his entire book on an online poll conducted at abcnews.com that provides some broad statistics but does little to reveal the depth of the problem. It seems that this book reflects the author's shallow attempt to gain notoriety rather than a sincere attempt to truly help people.
In the author's desperation to receive positive feedback, he even had to ASK someone to write a review on Amazon (see first review). If Dr. Greenfield were truly interested in understanding how his book impacts the public, he should try to read unsolicited and unbiased reviews.
It's really a must-read to better understand potential pitfa.......1999-11-04
It's really a must-read to better understand potential pitfalls of surfing on the Internet. As a writer, I came across Dr. Greenfield via the ABCNews online survey, and had occasion to write a story on that subject myself, grateful to have some of his comments and insights for the piece. We have become friends since then, and Dr. Greenfield honored me with his request for a quote from me for the inside cover of this book. It was as a business and technical writer that I provided the book liner quote, but it's now as a veteran Internet surfer and consumer that I write this comment for him on Amazon.com. Buy it, use it, memorize it, heed its warnings - - - whether you are the novice or the veteran on the Internet. Rand Holman Publisher/Editor www.newsschmooze.com

Interesting, informative, not too clinical.......1999-05-10
This book was required for a class but honestly, most of the articles were fun to read. Particular qualatative studies on the Rigors of Kidney Dialasis and the article on depression were especially enjoyable. I recommend it for anyone in college who plans to be a doctor. It is important to get a sociological view of medicine. The sociological view gives more of a bird's eye view of medicine including the patient, caregivers, the doctor, the medical student and the administrators.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent resource.......2005-03-08
I highly recommend this book. It presents a tremendous amount of valuable information that explains the causes of pedophilia and why child molesters do what they do. It is a hopeful book that presents concrete steps people can take to stop child molestation.
Unfortunately, the public may have trouble accepting its message, in spite of the strong credentials of its authors. The basic idea is that the ongoing sexual interest in younger children arises in boys during adolescence, and sometimes earlier. These boys can be identified and treated early, before they molest, and then they can be monitored for the reappearance of pedophilia, and controlled if necessary. Parents are in the best position to start this process. They can look for the warning signs of pedophilia in their sons, have them tested, take them in for treatment, and protect their other children from them. The problem is that society sees pedophiles as vile monsters, so that it's hard to imagine any parent is going to be willing to admit their child is one. I just can't imagine parents doing what the book recommends.
Specic actions can be taken to make a difference.......2004-07-19
I picked up this book thinking I would read the introduction. Instead, I read all of it and was left with a sense of hope and possibility around a subject that previously had left me feeling hopeless and powerless. The chapter formats and the case histories make this a highly readable as well as informative book, which I enthusiastically recommend.
A Valuable Resource for Parents and Professionals.......2004-07-19
This book is a godsend for families and professionals. Abel and Harlow have done a great service with this extensively researched and reader-friendly book. The care with which they have written and arranged their findings and suggestions makes the book useful and practical for anyone wanting to have better understanding of this difficult subject. Their humane and balanced point of view offers hope and help.
Knowledge is Power in the Fight Against Child Sexual Abuse.......2004-07-09
I thought I knew a lot about child sexual abuse until I read this book. As a child I survived sexual abuse. As an adult I am still dealing with the long range effects of severe sexual abuse perpetrated on my daughter. This book really opened my eyes and gave me hope. This is a book of facts, based on extensive research. Knowing these facts can save families from the devastating effects of abuse that can continue for generations.
Since most child sexual abuse happens in families or with close family associates, the key to stopping it is to let parents know that there is help available for the perpetrator as well as the victim of the abuse.
The Stop Child Molestation Book teaches ordinary people what to say and do to be heroes and save hundreds of children from becoming victims or from becoming abusers. It does that by providing concrete examples of converstations that parents can have with their children, and a good list of resources for action if needed.
The tone of the book is definitely sex positive. What I mean is that this is not a book that is against sex or pleasure. The harm that the book tries to prevent is that which comes from sex between an adult and young children, or between children when the younger one is pre-adolescent and the age difference is more than five years.
I am so convinced of the importance of this book that I have bought more than a dozen copies and have given them away to families with children and to professionals that I know.
How to save the Children.......2004-07-08
My having read this book has given me the ability to help people. I, for once, had truthful information, based on 16 thousand interviews. I had a clear and understandable resource to refer to regarding this tragic dilemma that faces our country. It needs to be read and kept close at hand. I recommend it highly.
