Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

Don’t look up

It won’t help. You can’t get out of the way, you can’t dig a hole deep enough to hide. The end is coming, and there’s nothing you can do about it.

So why read this book?
Because you can’t look away when not just the religious fanatics are saying we’re all going to be destroyed but the scientists are in on the act too. Here’s what they’re saying:

• We’re a million years over due for a mass extinction.

• The sun at radiation minimum is acting much worse than at solar maximum, and one misdirected spewing of plasma could fry us in an instant.

• The magnetic field—which shields us from harmful radiation—is developing a mysterious crack.

• Our solar system is entering an energetically hostile part of the galaxy.

• The Yellowstone supervolcano is getting ready to blow, and if it does, we can look forward to nuclear winter and 90 percent annihilation.

• The Maya, the world’s greatest timekeepers ever, say it’s all going to stop on December 21, 2012.

So, see? There’s nothing you can do, but you might as well sit back and enjoy the show.

That’s why you should read this book.

*****

Dear Reader,

If there were a chance that opening this book could set off a chain of events that would lead to Apocalypse, to the end of Life as we know it, would you be tempted? Finger poised uncertainly above the flashing red button? How about if the Apocalypse promised to result in a new age of enlightenment, a Heaven on Earth like never before?

Personally, I’ll take the security of my cozy life over a chance at nirvana. But status quo may no longer be an option, for any of us. This book will convince you that there is a nonnegligible chance that the year 2012 will be more tumultuous, catastrophic, and, quite possibly, revelatory, than any other year in human history.

Parts of this book are best read with a bowl of popcorn: looking into the jaws of a great white shark in search of the meaning of death; touring a picturesque Guatemalan town with Mayan shaman just weeks before it is utterly destroyed. Other sections go better with a tranquilizer, such as the impending eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano, or the mass extinction headed our way—on the scale of the great collision that destroyed the dinosaurs and 70 percent of all other species, our best scientists contend that it’s now overdue. Nail-biters should beware the fact that the next peak in the sunspot cycle, due in 2012, is widely expected to set records for the number and intensity of solar storms pummeling the Earth with radiation and igniting natural calamities such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and Katrina-sized hurricanes. And that our entire solar system appears to be moving into a dangerous interstellar energy cloud.

Is it a coincidence that the burgeoning war between Christianity and Islam seems hell-bent for Armageddon? Or that numerous other religions, philosophies, and cultural traditions are signaling that the end is near, with 2012 emerging as the consensus target date? A new era is about to be born, with all the pain and blood and joy and release that birth naturally entails.

Facing oblivion, or at least mega-metamorphosis, is something that few of us are emotionally prepared to do. Thus my excuse for the gallows humor that pervades this story. In a memorable Mary Tyler Moore episode, Mary cracks up laughing at the funeral of Chuckles the Clown who, dressed as a peanut while marching in a parade, was shucked to death by an elephant. If Mary can giggle in the face of death, so can we.

With kind regards,
Lawrence E. Joseph

5 out of 5 stars Waiting to Exhale.......2007-09-27

Something in the world has changed. We all know it. We all feel as though we are holding our breath. I have observed birds feeding in places where they've rarely been seen before. I have observed butterflies this year become increasingly aggressive. Bees in California are disappearing. Weather patterns are shifting. Governments seem to be spiraling downward in an attempt to control, control, control. So what's going on?

Lawrence E. Joseph takes us with him on his journey to discover the source of our unease. We travel with him through all the possible scenarios beginning with the Mayan prediction of world disaster in 2012. He doesn't go looking for the boogey-man in the closet. He looks to the scientific world for answers. The answers that he finds are not encouraging. Sunspots are active. Never mind the Celebrity Disaster of the Year--global warming, the entire universe may be heating up. Then there is my personal favorite, the reversal of the poles.

Joseph does not overlook mankind's potential contribution to the disaster scenario either. He zeros in on the heart of prophecy, mysticism and madness. He looks at religion.

It is the Jewish prophecy that brings with it the greatest potential for self-fulfillment and the greatest potential for the destruction of mankind. The U.S. government seems to be a willing accomplice in bringing Rabbi Yitzhak Kaduri's vision into focus. The bombing of Afganistan began after sundown on October 13, 2001.

"The Gog and Magog conflict is prophesied to last for seven years at which time, autumn 2008, a major revelation concerning Mashiach (Messiah) will be made." (See page 195)

Apocalypse 2012 is a measured, sometimes amusing, well-written adventure into the world of potential disasters. The author does wobble a bit at the end. He apparently felt compelled to offer some type of direction or comfort to his readers. There is none. More to the point, once you accept that a disaster will occur without knowing its source, you can't do anything more than live your life for the moment, the best way you know how.

Lawrence E. Joseph can be forgiven for wobbling. After all, the entire earth wobbles in its rotation. The last wobble resulted in a disruption of energy streaming from the Milky Way, 26,000 years ago. The next disruption is expected to occur on 12/21/2012 at 11:11 pm Universal Time. (See page 33)

1 out of 5 stars If this is science I am Superman.......2007-09-25

This book is a tour through some of the cutting edge research in; volcanology, geology, astronomy as viewed by some controversial figures in those fields. Mostly a non-scientific look into the fringe elements surrounding 2012, the end of the Mayan Long Count. The book dissapoints on two counts; it promises to add some insight into the 2012 popular discourse, and it claims to be a scientific investigation. Unfortunately it does neither, as it adds nothing new to the understanding of 2012, the Maya or the Mayan Calendar, and it fails miserably to explain any valid scientific research. But It does expound profusely on controversial research without ever presenting it in a scientific manner. In the growing universe of popular culture 2012 literature, this book sits at the bottom of the pile.

4 out of 5 stars Not Proof, But Good Science.......2007-09-17

This book is not centered on Mayan calendar analysis, but rather on science. And it doesn't prove any date or time but does point in a very substantial way the ideas of a possible catastrophe. It relates to the recent (within 10 years, especially in 2003) solar flares on the Sun and subsequent earth storms and how they very much interact with each other. The Sun storms recorded are the most active in recent times possible the affects of hurricane Katrina and other Earth storms. Also, what is important is the gravitational pull, as well as the magnetic pull of the planets in our solar system, the sun affected much easier, as it being a gelatin like substance, not solid.

In addition, the entire solar system, according to Lawrence, is moving and about to enter an interstellar energy cloud which will have a major affect on magnetic pulls, a possible pole reversal, which could result in major electrical storms and other serious consequences. This will also affect the sun and solar system. Right now they are saying that there are serious cracks in the magnetic fields and there is more to this, as well as holes in the ozone which may be the result or something more than aerosol.

There are also other things to consider, such as the Wyoming supervolcano which, if erupted, is predicted to bring a major death toll over the earth as well ash to bring on a short term (10 years) ice age, which is one way the planet earth (Gaia- the theory of the earth being a living organism, as opposed to simply rock and elements - James Lovelock) can cool itself. This also relates to the earth's nuclear core being hot, in need of cooling when it gets overheated.

There is also the idea of the glaciers melting bringing less pressure on the Teutonic plates underneath, allowing more seismic activity and earthquakes. Not sure what to make of all this, except that the solar activity, the level of volcanic activity, the melting of glaciers, the interstellar cloud, as well as other theories of the overheated earth core and the ice melting fresh water in the salt oceans, possibly shutting down the conveyor belts all come into play. Now along with this, the Mayan calendar, and global warming in general, which Al Gore states will flood the oceans 24 feet, killing untold millions in land loss, agricultural disasters and famines, which then brings on major disease in poorer countries. It leaves us a lot to think about. I will say that if this interstellar cloud has the significance they are speaking about, then the magnetic reversals have the possibility of ending life as we know it.

I'd like to believe the optimistic escapee, the doomsday, wanna be believer and magick seeking individual, hopes that there is a noosphere (the idea of a psychic collective layer part of the organism earth) and looks towards the Mayans belief, that a consciousness transformation will take place, as our bodies and brains are made up of water and electricity. Who knows? It's a mystery, but there is global warming and definite climate changes ahead.

5 out of 5 stars A Logical Inquiry Into An Otherwise Hysterical Topic.......2007-09-10

This informative book is geared towards adults with an analytical bent, who wish to enter into an objective inquiry into the various predictions and talk of future catastrophe associated with the year 2012. The author succeeds in exploring these matters from an objective, non-judgmental point of view. His artful use of humor throughout the book serves to lighten the mood of an otherwise morbid and bleak subject.

The discussion draws from diverse sources of knowledge including several branches of the physical sciences, metaphysics, and a wide variety of religious points of view, in order to offer a well-rounded survey of the subject at hand. The book includes an extensive bibliography showing the vast wealth of information the author consulted. Indeed, it would seem that he left no stone unturned. The author successfully guides the reader through a systematic and logical thinking process about such matters, thereby dispelling the hype and hysteria, which so commonly follow topics of this type.

Overall, I found this book to be a well-balanced and logical overview of the issues now facing humanity regarding what the near future may have in store for us. We tend to think that the world will go on just as it always has, and so the exploration of these topics makes us stop and consider that we may not be as invulnerable as we think we are. We all take events like the Sun rising and setting on schedule, the regular turning of the seasons, and the rising and falling of the tides, for granted. This book refocuses the lens, so to speak, to show that in the whole of the Earth's history, things have not always been stable and constant; but that the Earth has, in fact, gone through many great cataclysms throughout its history. What would make us immune to experiencing one such event, or events, of great upheaval and change?

If for nothing else, exploring these ideas is a great opportunity to do a personal survey of why we are here, living on this little planet, within the vast universe; and what our personal purpose for living might be. It is also an opportunity to pause and realize just how fragile life is, and really take to heart the need to make the most of what we have, and to protect the resources that God, through nature, graciously provide for us.

1 out of 5 stars Projection and Make-belief.......2007-09-06

Remember Y2K? So much nonsense perpetuated by paranoid folks trying to impose their ungrounded fears onto others. We create our future. 2012 may be a self-fulfilling prophecy. In this new millennium it may be wise to step beyond superstition and stop being victims. Gaia is overpopulated and raped of its resources. What really needs to happen is collaboration and cooperation beyond the holy dollar - businesses changing their profit models away from growth only. And people honoring the planet beyond a blind consumerist and throw away culture. Rome's teachings waiting to be implemented globally...

Science fiction author (Brainchild; Virus) and journalist David Jay Brown is keenly interested in the future and what it forebodes for humanity in terms of our ability to navigate through our current world of uncertainties and its ongoing conflicts. To get a better idea of where we are going, he interviewed over 20 visionary and provocative thinkers, ranging from Deepak Chopra, Noam Chomsky, Edgar Mitchell, Ram Dass, and Rupert Sheldrake, to Douglas Rushkoff, Robert Anton Wilson, Peter Russell, and iconoclastic comedian George Carlin. Conversations on the Edge of the Apocalypse is the result. Instead of a predictable roadmap to the future, Brown and his interview subjects paint a provocative picture of possibilities both perilous and exhilarating. Along the way, they also repeatedly explore the essential role consciousness will play, and already is playing, in shaping the world we are collectively heading towards, as well as how it is impacting and being impacted upon by such factors as language, politics, chemistry (including consciousness-expanding drugs), emotions, psychic phenomena, robotics, spirituality, shamanism, art, and alien encounters. This is a book that will appeal to all readers interested in becoming more aware of current world developments, both positive and negative, and what can be done about them to ensure a better world tomorrow.--Larry Trivieri Jr.

"Pressure to evolve has never been greater. In interviews with leading-edge thinkers in genetics, neurobiology, linguistics, media, psychiatry and parapsychology, David Jay Brown asks the Big Questions: Will we survive? What is the effect of technology on the biosphere? What happens to consciousness after death? What gives reason for hope?...Despite their wildly varying concerns and views on specific questions, these thinkers show the power of intelligence and collective vision to change the present, reverse the past and influence the future...These short interviews offer so much to ponder and follow up on, not least of which are a fantastic reading list, new thinkers to watch, websites to check and reasons to reach beyond the boundaries of ordinary dreams. Most of all, this book offers positive visions of the future."
-- Susan Salter Reynolds, The Los Angeles Times

5 out of 5 stars What is consciousness, and where does it go when we die?.......2007-01-24

Wow! Beautiful! This book was given to me by a stranger (now a friend) immediately before a long flight, and I have been traveling with it ever since. Although each interview is carefully and masterfully woven together to create a whole, each interview is also an entity in itself and short enough to lend to an interested traveler for a brief trip of the mind.

So often we pass by or purposefully ignore those deep questions about our future. Not this book; this book spills it all out naked before you. I love the odd collection of interviewees. Each is a well-respected leader from a different field, giving a diverse yet surprisingly good conglomeration of thoughts. The author is not telling you what to think, he is simply putting forth the information from many different walks of life. I love to read such a blatant clash of viewpoints right next to each other.

Beware: The ideas contained within these pages are sometimes encouraging, sometimes frightening, but always thought-provoking.

5 out of 5 stars A spectacular encounter at the borderlands of science.......2007-01-24

David Jay Brown takes the reader on a stimulating odyssey through science, technology, and the mind -- a world that involves the future of humanity, the mystery of consciousness, the significance of hallucinations, supertechnologies, the afterlife, and alien life. No human being should pass up the experience of stepping through the portals of this beautiful book into fantastic new worlds that scientists, psychologists, and philosophers are now exploring at the frontiers of science and mind.

3 out of 5 stars Not Quite what it says it is..........2007-01-08

While this book is fairly interesting and offers some provacative, if inconclusive, evidence on a fair range of subjects, few of these subjects are really what the book leads you to believe it is about. David Jay Brown seems to be trying to further an agenda to widen awareness to paranormal and parapsychological events and research. This is fine, and these topics are interesting, but they are definitely not what you expect if you dont know who many of the interviewees are and just read the cover of the book. As an interviewer David Jay Brown often allows those being interviewed to stray to the point of distraction from the subject and sometimes it sounds like they are pitching for grants or making a TV commercial for their respective causes. This, of course, is why you interview a wide range of people for their varied points of view, but some of them are such a tangent that you have to look at the cover to make sure you've picked up the correct book from the nightstand! On the other hand, just when you start getting interested in whatever cause these people are promoting, David Jay Brown comes in with a new and completely disconnected question (from what was obviously a list of stock questions) without so much as a follow-up or a valid tie-in. Half of the interviews sound like the subjects filled out questionaires on the internet and had no interactive interaction with David Jay Brown at all. All this aside, I am not sorry to have read the book. There were some very interesting concepts in it, but I think that it has more to do with Psychic phenomena than what the immediate future holds for the human race or any of the "hard" sciences.

PS- To David Jay Brown: For Christs' sake man! Hire an editor!

1 out of 5 stars Noam describes himself as a Libertarian Socialst - Say What?.......2006-09-22

KEEP THIS DEFINITION IN MIND WHEN YOU READ NOAMS STUFF. DO YOU WANT TO BE LIVE IN A COMMUNIST....I MEAN LIBERTARIAN SOCIALIST STATE.
Libertarian socialism includes a group of political philosophies that aims to create a society without political, economic or social hierarchies - a society within which individuals freely co-operate together as equals. This would be achieved through the abolition of private property, thereby restoring direct control of the means of production and resources to the working class and other unpropertied classes. Additionally, its advocates have also expressed the notion that libertarian socialism is a tendency of thought that informs the identification, criticism and practical dismantling of illegitimate authority in all aspects of social life. Accordingly they believe that "the exercise of power in any institutionalised form -- whether economic, political or sexual -- brutalises both the wielder of power and the one over whom it is exercised." Since 1987, New York Times Magazine editor Alex Heard has scouted out Americans with out-there beliefs: people who breed red heifers to hasten Christ's Second Coming and pen books like The Dead Are Alive and If We Can Keep a Severed Head Alive; astral-plane sky pilots; homicidal survivalists. The best piece is "Welcome, Space Brothers!" about UFO fans whose leader, Ruth Norman, "combined the couture sensibilities of a drag queen with the joie de vivre of a Frisbee-chasing Irish setter." He conveys what it must be like to be one who sat rapt as Ruth spoke, "sounding like a combination of Julia Child, Aunt Clara on Bewitched, and a bossy little girl telling other little girls the rules of her playhouse."

Heard gets inside their closed systems to poke fun from within, and often puts things in historical context. You'll understand mainstream apocalyptic literature like the bestselling Left Behind thrillers far better once Heard briefs you on the whole range of stranger biblical end-times interpreters. Like David Gelernter's 1939: The Lost World of the Fair, Apocalypse Pretty Soon has a poignant sense of what commonsense culture has lost in giving up its millennial dreams.

Heard is valuable because he's thorough and genuinely interested in why Arthur Blessitt finds it blessed to drag a 105-pound cross across the globe, surviving attacks by mamba snake, crocodile, Nicaraguan firing squad, and LAPD choke hold. His book is madly funny, and deeply sad. --Tim Appelo

Book Description

The inspired madness of America's apocalyptic and pre-millennial organizations may have reached a fever pitch with the turn of the twenty-first century, but intrepid cultural traveler Alex Heard spent a ten-year period witnessing the crescendo firsthand.  Heard's enthusiasm led him on errands as diverse as being a voyeur at a Republic of Texas militia standoff, accompanying an expectant UFO "greeting party" to a remote field in Minnesota, and enacting the grief of the California quail at an ad-hoc therapy group for fierce environmentalists who believe the earth is an actual living entity that's preparing to kill off its human population--and soon...or at least pretty soon.

Amazing as it may seem, however, throughout this trenchant subcultural travelogue, Heard never stoops to ridicule his subjects.  As one reviewer puts it, "Heard's real achievement may be that he makes us care--in a way that is more than voyeuristic--about the colorful characters he meets on the road to the new millennium.  He takes these people seriously, allows his assumptions to be challenged, and lets himself find that some of their beliefs and fears reflect his own" (San Jose Mercury News).

Apocalypse Pretty Soon will appeal to science fiction fans and students of subcultures, as well as anybody interested in way-out alternatives to the brave new world.

Now in paperback, this book will have an audience well beyond "millenniamania," from science fiction fans to students of subculture, and anybody interested in way-out alternatives to the brave new world. -->

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining look at some bizarre world views.......2003-07-19

An entertaining, funny and often sad look at some of the various personalities that make up the cultish world of millenial apocalyptic groups. The common thread here is the belief in imminent apocalyptic change by the groups through different means (alien visitation, return of Jesus, cataclysmic Earth changes, etc.).
Heard, it seems, tries to be objective and open-minded about each group at first. But when faced with the absurdity of their belief systems and after getting to know the people that form the leadership of these groups, he can't help but present a slightly more skeptical opinion. By the end of each chapter, after Heard has presented his study of the group, it's leadership, tactics, and beliefs, it's hard to not think these people are out of their minds.
The book is also a fine study in the unusual aspects of the human psyche. From the egomaniacal and seemingly deranged leaders to their willing and needy followers, Heard gives us a hard look at some of the personalities that make up these fringe groups.

5 out of 5 stars Things More Frightening Than The Apocalypse..........2002-11-12

What's more frightening than the idea of an apocalypse? How 'bout all the people out there with so many freaky ideas of how and when it will come... From a psychological standpoint, this book is absolutely fascinating, darkly humorous, and yet undeniably frightening in its portrayal of people who might be neighbors or cousins of yours and mine who await an alien takeover or the return of Christ or what have you and the extent to which these hopes or fears have affected their lives and the lives of those they know and love. Obviously, the author has focused on one particular quirk of the various lives his subjects lead, and yet what is magnified for the reader are some of the most thought-provoking and bizarre ideas and behaviors I have ever encountered in print outside of an issue of Psychology Today. A book that can be aborbed and pondered by anyone with common sense and the ability to seperate reality from fantasy, I would avoid letting this fall into the hands of impressionable or highly imaginative young readers who might become fixated on some particular section and grow fearful because of it. Disturbing in both an entertaining and harrowing way, I couldn't put it down and hope for some sort of a sequel. Amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Joyride to the Future.......2001-05-05

Alex Heard's adventures in the borderlands of culture remind me of the joys of listening to radical idealists of any stripe. I could feel the presence of each of his subjects, whether dreamer of a new Atlantis or channeler of benevolent, alien intelligence, or cross-bearing transcontinental walker. Each individual is a revelation in the spectrum of humanity, and most of them are endearing in distinct and peculiar ways. Heard is not unkind to either his subjects or his readers. He is a translator between "here" and "there," whose writing is so fluid and flawless that these strange world views slide into one another leaving the reader wondering how preferrable his own reality is in comparison. Read this book and be, by turns, amazed, entertained, touched, and more eager to engage the world and try out other lenses on reality.

1 out of 5 stars Whining, revenge-seeking.......2000-12-07

By his own admission, Alex Heard's first chapter (deemed his "best" by reviewers) seems to be a personally motivated, whining, and revenge-seeking diatribe against a New Age nonprofit organization that caught him stealing files and photocopying them from a private back room. After he was discovered and tongue-lashed by the organization's director, Heard, in his own words, "whined and pleaded" but could not understand why members of the organization didn't seem to "like him" after the incident! He goes on and on about wanting to be accepted and liked, and the cooler his reception, the more hurt he seems to be-and bent on revenge. The book seems to have been motivated by his resulting ego deflation, perhaps to salvage some self-esteem, or to prove to himself that, despite his lapse in ethics and law-abiding manners, he was still a "reputable journalist." But he tells on himself: (a) he never met the (deceased) founder of the organization, but that doesn't stop him from lobbing at her the caliber of insults one would think twice about hurling toward a hated enemy; (b) he never read any of the books upon which the organization's beliefs were founded; (c) not finding anything sinister to report, he digresses into a tale about a totally unrelated, extremist organization from the 1950s, whose behavior and beliefs bear no resemblance to the subject of his chapter. By this juxtaposition, he tries to imply some artificial similarity. When this fails, he uses the same tactic to imply parallels to the notorious Heaven's Gate organization-again, completely unrelated in beliefs and behavior. Perhaps because of Heard's affiliation with supposedly reputable periodicals, his unethical "reporting" on this subject has been published in book form. The fact that the subject organization of Heard's first chapter did not immediately telephone police after his break-in, or at the least, ask him to leave the premises and not return, may demonstrate that he might be right on one count, if such extreme tolerance can be called "crazy"! But Heard's chapter goes on. Still not satiated because he is unable to find any "dirt" to dish (beyond criticizing the founder's fashion choices), Heard digs up an article by another writer that he quotes extensively. It features an individual who left the subject organization under a cloud, after his alcoholism and promiscuous homosexuality had come to light (he was soliciting sex from young male members). This quoted former member (now also deceased) had a grudge to avenge after his public exposure, so Heard finds in him a suitable compatriot willing to ladle up enough fabricated slander to curdle anyone's pudding. After that, I put Heard's book down. I hate to think what his other chapters have done to other organizations. Real, reputable, sincere, or out there, I guarantee that Heard's reporting is slanted to his own objectives and therefore not the "objective" tour the book's cover promises. In fact, the book seems to be nothing more than an attempt to cover up for Heard's own lapses of manners and professional ethics. He can whine all day, as artfully as he wants to, and he'll still be the kind of journalist one should never let in the front door. If I wrote about my neighborhood church using his approach, you'd think every God-fearing American was some kind of wacko waiting for pie-in-the-sky "salvation" who should be locked up for "worshipping golden crucifixes gruesomely affixed to the wall"! I could paint the same kind of picture about any group, organization, belief system, or political organization. Let's don't encourage this kind of pre-biased, revenge-seeking "journalism."

How this really informative, well written and highly entertaining book missed being a best-seller is beyond me! We've loaned our copy to several friends who then bought a copy for themselves, and we've ordered additional copies for several others. I've read it over at least three times. If you enjoy excellent writing about off-beat characters you will love this book!

5 out of 5 stars best novel in years?.......2006-04-03

I have read many novels over the years, some quite good, some rather boring. A freind of mine gave me a copy of Isolation a couple of weeks ago, and I couldn't put it down. It has all of what oyu would want in a book, and more. Action, intrigue, ect. YOu can sympathise with the characters as they go through many hardships, and you can only hope they suceed. If you don't already own a copy of this book, do yourself a favor and get it.

5 out of 5 stars best book I've read in awhile.......2006-03-09

If you like your sci fi with plenty of action and humor, this is a book for you. It is very violent, but you get the sense that it is for a reason. The story flows very well, and it is like watching a movie in your head.

4 out of 5 stars Quality overview of the best of the Garou.......1999-10-27

beginning with a comic form short story, The history of the tribe from prehistory to the current decade is then described in a series of letters between tribe scholars. I would have like more detail here, but what's here is good. I would also have like to see more detailed info on tribe protocols, but structure info, and global polical view are good. Apart from the two points mentioned, this is an essential book for any werewolf enthusiast. One of my three must have werewolf books!

It also lists Silver Fang fetishes, rites, gifts and merits & Flaws. This book is not a waste of money for those that want to play a Silver Fang correctly. If you can find it, buy it.
