Book Description

Feast your eyes on these amazing creatures before they disappear. This stampede of wild animals, from Chinese Alligator to Grevy’s Zebra, are so rare, they're all endangered. David McLiman’s bold and playful illustrations transform each letter into a work of art, graphically rendered with animal characteristics. Scales, horns, even insect wings transform the alphabet into animated life.

Once you take this eye-opening safari, you'll never look at letters or animals with the same way again. A striking work of art and a zoological adventure, Gone Wild is sure to be loved by children and adults alike.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book.......2007-09-29

A truly beautiful and creative book that reminds us of those great typography designers such as Aldus Manutius, Nicolas Jenson or Claude Garamond. My child loved discovering wild (and sadly endangered) animals through the pages of Gone Wild.

1 out of 5 stars Boring to children.......2007-09-11

This book was totally uninteresting to my grandchildren. It's a book that adults think will catch the interest of little ones and does not.

5 out of 5 stars wild and wonderful.......2007-05-22

this is a wonderfuly illustrated book that manages to incorporate the many species of endangered animals names with the letters of the alphabet. While I bought it for my grandson(2) he is too young to appreciate it, so I have put it away for him to enjoy in the years ahead. I recommend it for the art work and for all the information that is on each page.

5 out of 5 stars Worthwhile addition to the home or school library.......2007-04-13

Ostensibly about the alphabet, this book teaches so much more. Through clever illustrations, McLimans introduces children (and adults!) to a variety of endangered animals. Each page contains a stylized black-and-white illustration of the animal in the form of a letter along with a separate stylized red illustration of the animal. For instance, the head of the bald-headed Ukari is integrated into the shape of the letter U, while the entire animal is portrayed in red next to the letter design. Each page also contains facts about the animal (such as its natural habitat and potential threats).

Students, teachers, and parents interested in exotic or unusual animals or becoming more aware of environmental issues will find this book worthwhile. This book is appropriate for families or classrooms of mixed ages since younger children can practice their letters while older children can learn about these unusual and endangered animals.

5 out of 5 stars Gone Wild Review.......2007-03-26

I loved this book.. it can be used on many levels in elementary school.

Who can resist the allure of the hidden wilderness water hole? Certainly not one rhino. Not two tigers. Nor three toucans. Pretty soon the delicious pool is drawing moose, catfish, pandas, tortoises... and more than 100 other critters from Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and beyond. But is it our imagination or is that rhino-sized water hole dwindling to a mere shadow of its former self, a puddle not fit for eight ladybugs, let alone 10 kangaroos? As the seasons change across the world, and the animals get thirstier, the water supply diminishes. Eventually, even the flowery-shirted frog that has stoically lingered through the drought packs his suitcase and takes off. The only hope now is a drop of rain on the parched earth...

With his usual elaborate detail, Graeme Base, mad genius behind Animalia, The Eleventh Hour: A Curious Mystery, and other wild and wonderful titles, presents a one-of-a-kind counting book. Naturally, Base would never be content to stick with a simple 1 through 10 format. Readers of all ages will linger over each spread, first counting the highlighted animals and giggling at the translation of their grunts and growls (the moose's "Moo, moo, mooooooiii!" means "Hey, get your hoof out of my ear!"). Then it's time to check out the diminishing size of the die-cut hole in the pond. And finally, readers will want to find each of the 10 additional animals cleverly hidden in every illustration, based on the silhouetted creatures in the border. A safari on paper--with an environmental and mathematical education thrown in for good measure. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

The long-awaited companion to the best-selling Animalia!

Graeme Base is back-with an exciting and fun new counting book! Children will love counting from one to 10 as animals of the world gather around a water hole. As one rhino gives way to two tigers, then three toucans, on up to 10 kangaroos, die-cut pages reveal the water hole in 10 different worldwide habitats, from African plains to Himalayan mountains to the Australian outback. But the water hole keeps shrinking, and with it the number of frolicking frogs. Can anything bring back the water that the animals all need to survive? Careful readers will find additional animals, many of them endangered, silhouetted in the borders of every spread and hiding within every landscape.

A stunning fusion of counting book, puzzle book, storybook, and art book, The Water Hole features the layers of interest that make Graeme Base's books among the world's best-loved picture books.

Another beautiful and entertaining book by Graeme Base! I enjoyed every page and bought more to share with my favorite young readers.

5 out of 5 stars great book on so many levels.......2007-07-02

enjoyed by children learning to count and by kids that love to find the hidden animals. What I like is how my 3 and 7 year olds both love it and I can make story time long or short depending on if I just read it or if we search out all the animals. also has a great message.

4 out of 5 stars Not appropriate for school-age kids.......2007-05-10

Don't get me wrong, this is a really great book. This book was just not what I expected. Illustrations were great and words in this book were minimal - very appropriate for preschool kids. I had intended this for my school-age kids and it was too simplistic for them. Also, this book make it sound like the earth will restore itself on its own (raining solving drought problem) when in fact, the earth needs our help to restore it by not wrecking havoc Mother Nature.

5 out of 5 stars favorite children gift.......2007-02-07

I give this book to children all the time and the joy is given ten fold back

The person who received this book used it to promote water savings tips to her elementary school students who greatly enjoyed finding the hidden surprises in the beautiful illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for interaction!.......2007-10-02

This book is really hands on, and gets lots of talking and questions going with my 3 and 5 yr olds. It's a clever book and we've had a lot of fun with it.

5 out of 5 stars From preschooler to kindergartner to Mommy, everyone loves this book!.......2007-08-21

My family loves this book! Both my sons, ages three and five, enjoy trying to guess which animal this tail, nose, foot, etc., belongs to, and then reading what the animal "does" with it. In the back of the book are more in-depth descriptions of the animals, which we also enjoyed. We ordered this book from Amazon over a year ago, and it is still a top choice when we sit down to read!

5 out of 5 stars My kids love this!.......2007-06-13

Great educational and fun book! My kids' favorite is the horned lizard shooting blood out of his eyes. Lovely collage illustrations too.

5 out of 5 stars Lucky twice.......2007-05-26

It is a good, informative book. Although my 9 years old son seems to be very old for this kind of reading, I still bought it for him because of the book's educational value. Surprise, surprise! - my Big Boy liked the book a lot(!) We now quiz each other about various animals... Another good book that I value a lot for its educational content is Why Some Cats are Rascals, Book 2 by B. Nowiki. I was afraid that in this case my son would to be a "little too little", but he is now reading it and seems to have even more fun... - lucky me, again!

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating animal facts.......2007-05-13

Einstein wondered what it was like to be a beam of light, but the rest of us are happy wondering what it's like to be a flea or a brachiosaurus. David M. Schwartz's engaging picture book is for the rest of us. With the help of James Warhola's colorful, exaggerated illustrations, we learn about the cool things we could do if we were various nonhuman types of creatures. If you high-jumped like a flea, for example, you could jump straight into the Statue of Liberty's torch. If you ate like a shrew, you could devour over 700 hamburgers a day! Each comparison is explained scientifically in a comically illustrated appendix, where young readers will find questions designed to elicit further comparing and calculating. The best surprise by far is finding out what would happen if you grew as fast in your first nine months of life as you did in the nine months before you were born. (Ages 3 to 8) --Richard Farr

Book Description

Did you know that a frog can jump 20 times its body weight? Or that an ant can lift an object 50 times its weight? By applying these ratios and proportions to their own bodies, readers will discover what they could do if they had the amazing abilities of animals.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Animal Information!.......2006-06-15

This book was very interesting. It tells you how a frog can jump twenty times it's body length and how far you could jump if you could hop like a frog. It also tells you how much weight you could lift if you were as strong as an ant. And much more.

I read this book with my mom and did the math calculations with my dad. It was a fun way to learn about insects, reptiles and animals.

I think teachers should use this book to help their students learn about math.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2003-06-17

I am a high school math teacher and I use this book to help my freshmen learn about ratios and proportions. They use the proportions to calculate how much they could swallow, how far they could jump, etc. They're astonished at the results!

5 out of 5 stars This Is An Amazing Book.......2001-12-07

This book offers a look at the wonders of the natural world by comparing the capabilities of many different animals and birds in human terms. The concept, together with the large and vivid illustrations hooked me from the beginning. This book really challenges a child to think and causes an adult to marvel at God's creations. "If you hopped like a frog...you could jump from home plate to first base in one mighty leap!...If you grew as fast in your first nine months as you did in the nine months before you were born...you would have been...heavier than 2 1/2 million elephants!" Just imagine that!

5 out of 5 stars If You Hopped Like a Frog.......2000-04-06

This book was so enjoyable! The pictures were great! It gave you facts, and then expanded on those facts to give you information how it would affect you. As a teacher, I could use this book as an introduction and then have my students make a spin-off class book.

Once again, Sloane Tanen has created a great early childhood book that will become a child's favorite. I love this book and all the Sloane Tanen books!
Every home with very young children should have this book...it is wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars ADORABLE.......2007-04-05

When we read Coco All Year Round to my 9 month old, he goes APE. The pictures are so colorful and chock full of imagery and the text is short, sweet and, as usual for Tanen, clever. Coco covers everything from stepping in poop to vegetarianism. We love it at our house.

5 out of 5 stars Coco charms again.......2006-10-09

Small children and the adults who read to them must both delight in Coco. This chic avian ingenue engages both wide-eyed pre-schoolers and their sophisticated elders. Who could resist Coco in her Halloween frog costume?

5 out of 5 stars Reason to celebrate.......2006-08-23

Here's another total charmer from Tanen. I read "Coco All Year Round" to my 10-month old son and he seemed to really enjoy the pictures. And I love the clever captions and quirky characters. I'm a big fan of Tanen's chicken books and highly recommend this newest one (and all the others) for the young and the young-at-heart.

My son and I love to read about the curious monkey. This book is great!

5 out of 5 stars george is wonderful.......2002-10-16

George is good to read after an exasperating day with your toddler or preschooler. It reminds you that it could be worse, you could REALLY have a monkey to care for, and your monkeys don't really mean to get into mischief, they are just very very curiouus.

5 out of 5 stars Just as good as the original stories.......2000-06-22

To date my daughter has been reading the "Curious George" books that belonged to my husband when he was a child. I was a little skeptical that the newly written stories would capture the same spirit as those written more than 30 years ago. However, my daughter absolutely loved it especially as both the storyline and the illustrations were more detailed than usual and made it fun for her to point out different things and extend into a discussion with us about beaches, lifesaving etc. Like her other "George" books she has reread this one over and over.

5 out of 5 stars great for preschool & art projects.......2007-07-13

This is a great book for pre-school age kids. It's a simple story with lots of opportunities for the kids to participate, saying what each picture is. I know a lot of teachers use this book and then have the kids make their own "ink blot" type images and then say what they see in their cloud. Very cute book.

5 out of 5 stars good book.......2007-05-20

Great book for teaching shapes and cloud, fun to read with felt board activity.

5 out of 5 stars Replace that TV!.......2007-05-14

Tell the children to turn off the TV and read this book. It just begs them to try their hand at making some "spilled milk" with blue construction paper and cotton balls or ripped white paper. Parents and grown-ups are allowed to make designs, too (They will want to do it!).

5 out of 5 stars child book.......2007-05-08

My son at 13 months was introduced to this book at storytime at the local library. It was a hit at storytime and continues to be a hit at our house. My son has learned sign language and this book reinforces all of his animal signs. It is a great classic book.

5 out of 5 stars cute book.......2006-11-09

I remember this book being read to us way back in first grade. After the book was finished, we were given sheets of white paper and told to rip it(no scissors!) into shapes of 'spilled milk' to glue onto a darker piece of paper.

5 out of 5 stars Fruits and Vegetables.......2006-08-09

The thing that I really like about this book was that all the sentences weren't the same. It did not just say "these are bananas, these are tomatoes" all the time, but integrated questions, and even characteristics of the fruits and vegetables. The pictures are bright and colorful, and made me want to go buy a piece of fruit right then. I would highly recommend this book as a useful and practical tool for learning the names of basic fruits and vegetables in both English and Spanish. It is very likely that you will find yourself practicing these words at home when you are eating a piece of watermelon, or chopping a pepper for dinner.

Book Description

On a most sense-sational trip that takes them through an eye, an ear, a tongue, and even a dog's nose, Ms. Frizzle's class learns about the senses. Using their trademark sense of humor, Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen provide facts about the senses in both the human and animal worlds.

5 out of 5 stars The Grand Finale.......2004-11-05

In 1986, author Joanna Cole and illustrator Bruce Degen published their first book together. It was a story about a funky-cool teacher with frizzy-red hair, who led her class on the most extraordinary, in-depth, and out-of-this-world field trips like no instructor before her. The adventures of Ms. Frizzle and her students quickly became a hit with real-life children, parents and teachers alike. No one could have predicted the success that awaited Cole and Degen once "The Magic School Bus: At the Waterworks" hit the shelves.

Thirteen years and ten collaborations later, Cole and Degen wrote the final chapter to their long-running series. Appearing in 1999, "The Magic School Bus: Explores the Senses" was a bittersweet end to arguably one of the best ideas in the history of children's literature.

The tale begins, like all those before it, inside the Friz's classroom. Her students are learning all about the five senses: seeing, hearing, feeling, tasting, and smelling. Notes one student, "We were even learning a song about the senses to sing at an important parent-teacher meeting."

There's a problem with this, however. Ms. Frizzle thinks the conference is tomorrow evening. But little does she know that for once in her life, she's wrong! Incredible though it may seem, the meeting between parents and teachers is actually that evening! At least, that's what Mr. Wilde, Walkerville Elementary's new assistant principal, claims. But because Mr. Wilde doesn't find out about this latest development until the end of the school day, he can't inform the Friz -- she's already left the building!

"I've got to catch up with Ms. Frizzle!" exclaims Mr. Wilde. And, to the students' surprise, he plops down behind the wheel of their bus. Knowing the kind of trouble a new assistant principal is likely to have, the students also climb aboard. It marks the first time anyone other than the Friz has driven the bus, and there's no telling what might happen!

As with every adventure in the "Magic School Bus" series, things get a little crazy in a very short amount of time. Mr. Wilde, in all his enthusiasm, fiddles with a switch he shouldn't touch and -- PRESTO! -- the bus shrinks until it's no bigger than a speck of dust.

Despite being in a rather sticky situation, all is not lost. Instead of fretting over the fix they're in, Mr. Wilde and the students decide to make the best of it. In fact, they turn the experience into a learning session, centered on all things about the five senses. This would include the different parts and functions of seeing, hearing, feeling, tasting, and smelling. Before the adventure is done, Mr. Wilde and the students will have traveled through a police officer, a little boy, Ms. Frizzle herself(!), a dog, and a cat!

This book works on a number of levels. One such level, for example, is the symbolism in this final chapter of the series. Even though Ms. Frizzle is not with her students during their inside-story of a field trip, leading them along, feeding them tidbits of interesting information, they manage to hold their own just fine without her. In their first escapade together ("At the Waterworks"), the Friz was literally holding her students by the hand. In this book, however, she casts her class adrift so the children can figure things out on their own, a test they pass with flying colors. It's a sign of just how much they have grown under the instruction of Ms. Frizzle and her unusual (yet highly effective) teaching techniques.

It's a nice send-off to the series, instilling the message in children that, yes, eventually there won't be an adult around to point out every little thing. But don't worry! You will have learned so much during that time, you won't need someone to fulfill that duty. You will discover the beauty of independent thinking. And it ties in with one of the Friz's most basic principles: "Take chances! Make mistakes! And get messy!" The students, as well as readers of the book, are ready to move on, to grow, to take the next step.

Unlike the nine books that precede it, this story ends a little differently than all the rest. Yes, the pages that distinguish fact from fiction in the tale are still firmly in place. But the sly hints, the wily clues, pertaining to Ms. Frizzle's next great adventure are a mystery.

"Where will she take us next?" inquires Keesha, a student.

"That's the big question!" answers Arnold, a fellow student.

Thankfully, that "big question" is answerable. Because the "Magic School Bus" series became such a triumph, it's still riding strong almost 20 years later. There's a cartoon show, television tie-in books, chapter books, computer games, and a website, just to name a few things. There have even been card games, posters and plushie dolls!

The reason for its success is a simple one: it made learning fun. And when you combine those two ingredients, you've got a winning formula.

There just isn't enough that can be said about such a finely-crafted series. Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen have made the world of children's literature a better place because of the part they played in it. The adventures of the Friz and her students deserve a permanent home on bookshelves in classrooms, school libraries, and personal collections everywhere.

As Ms. Frizzle herself would say, "You never know where the Friz may go!"

3 out of 5 stars Parental guidance required.......2002-08-06

My science-loving eight-year-old son really enjoys reading books from the Magic School Bus series, and the topic and plot line of this one engaged him as well. But early into the book, he was asking me about nearly every other word. When I looked more carefully, I realized the reading level was higher than other books he had read in the series and many of the facts were things I had learned in junior high. I decided to take over, reading the book to him and explaining many of the topics in more detail. Don't get me wrong -- he really enjoyed the book and learned some "cool" new things about the senses. It just wouldn't have made much sense without my involvement.

5 out of 5 stars Science.......2002-04-04

This book is based on the television show the magic school bus, with Mrs. Frizzle. The book contains great factual illustrations for the reader. The students of Mrs. Frizzle's class are learning about the senses so they get into their magic school bus and shrink down, and go into a students nose and from there they continue to the other sensory organs. I like the format of this book because it is very active instead of reading from a textbook the children can get the same information but have fun while they are learning. I also like hands on activities and this is as close as hands on with a book as you can get. It also gives small science experiments and reports that the class has written for the child to read. The author has such great imagination and brings the fun back into learning science.

3 out of 5 stars Good science explanations but overwhelming for youngsters........1999-09-29

The Magic School Bus brings another cute story into print this year with Exploring the Senses. The story is somewhat predictable - the bus shrinks and children pop in-and-out of various parts of the body. But the basic explanations of the senses is good. Children ages 8 and older will learn about hair cells, smell cells, taste cells and rods and cones. The topics are a bit broad and children may need to read it several times to understand the science concepts. No experiments are included (unless you have a magic bus!). However, children will learn that we have many sensory cells and that each of these cells sends nerve signals to the big decoder - the brain. (From The Science Spiders(TM) Newsletter).

Book Description

This new edition of a bestseller continues the standard of excellence that earned the first edition the CHOICE award for Outstanding Academic Book in 1999. It incorporates traditional concepts in environmental and health science with new, emerging, and controversial issues associated with environmental threats to human health and ecology. Opposing scientific views on major issues such as global warming, overpopulation, the causes of cancer, endocrine disrupters, and more are presented with a balanced and objective view. The book has a technological edge because it is Web-enhanced - with a Web site kept current by the author - making it a "living" environmental health book.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best choices.......2007-06-11

As a professor of environmental health science, I find this text to be one of the most comprehensive, balanced, and science-rich texts avaialble. The third edition is the best yet, with minor typos, etc. corrected from previous editions. I also like the balance struck between environmental science and public health in this text. What I have usually found when reviewing texts for course use, is that they over emphasize one area or the other. The new chapter on disaster preparedness is a plus. The science rich presentation is well thought out and balanced. It provides just the right amount of challenge and knitting together of various scientific disciplines to be appropriate for my junior/senior level and graduate students.
