Make Your Mark

Design is at a turning point. Our infatuation with--and the backlash against--technology is over. Today's best designers have learned to embrace its advantages and think beyond its limitations by combining the power of the computer with the tactile qualities of handmade elements.

Inside you'll find examples of work that showcase a variety of design methods, including mixed media, illustration, letterpress, screenprinting and collage. You'll find inspiration in examples from outstanding designers and see how traditional elements can make a more powerful statement than anesthesized computer-only work. Fingerprint also includes insightful essays on the power of the handmade by Debbie Millman, Jean Orlebeke, Jim Sherraden, Martin Venezky and Ross Macdonald.

The projects in this book are beautiful, technical, simple, layered and powerful. Each project communicates its intended message with eloquence.

You can be part of this exciting design revolution. Leave your own fingerprint on the world by exploring the fusion of the digital with the hand-wrought.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book Ever.......2007-06-28

Fingerprint is a feast for the eyes and the spirit. Simply delicious. It's one of the most inspiring books I have ever seen and I have not let it out of my sight since I got it. I want to crawl inside this book and roll around on the pages.
Fingerprint features graphic designs with handmade elements. Next to the amazing art are notes by the designers. I love this. The artists tell you they used a pencil, a photograph, and a scanner. They don't tell you how you can get this identical look by buying 12 different products that cost lots of money. It's art without a sales pitch, which is rare these days. Everything in this book is unique and there's so much personality jumping from the pages.
Buy it, you will LOVE it.

5 out of 5 stars Ancient civilizations' overview.......2007-08-21

This book assembles a large number of evidences left by ancient civilizations. Written in an "adventure" format, the reading is quite easy and captivating. You'll enjoy better the subjects that you know little or nothing about (since it would not be possible to collect all the details over a so large number of occurrences).
Strongly recommended for those searching for an initiation on the "ancient civilizations" quest.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting book.......2007-08-06

My husband introduced me to this book while we were dating and I enjoyed it. The author, Graham Hancock, has visited the sites of ancient civilizations in Egypt, Peru, China, Easter Island, and such, and has found evidence of similar and very advanced methods of construction, mathematics, and water management as well as parallel legends that originated at these far-flung places.

5 out of 5 stars highly recomended.......2007-06-11

This thought provoking piece of investigative archeology will inspire you to think about the mysteries of the origin of our civilisation. Very well written so that even moderatly educated people can come to grips with highly technical conclusions that are arrived at using common sense and logic.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-06-05

I found most of this book utterly fascinating. I found that Hancock's ideas about all the similiarities between Ancient cultures pretty enlightening. I never realized that so many of the myths were so common among the ancient people like the story of the great flood or deluge. One has to wonder if they new about it, witnessed it, or it was orally passed down. This part of the book was great. You start asking yourself how did these similar stories get around the globe? How did the similarities in their building techniques get around the globe?

And here is where Hancock wants you to take a GIANT leap. For him all of it, everything from the stories to buildings to the gods they worshipped came from a so-called "Lost Civilization" that he thinks lived on Antartica. Fine, I can certainly see how one may come to this conclusion. But I think Hancock simply ignores easier theories because he so blindly believes his own with a scary single-minded tenacity. Hancock himself goes into great detail about how he believes that the ancients were great sailors of the oceans. The boats found buried near the pyramids gives this pretty good footing. So if they were such good sailors and were mapping the continents, Couldn't they have also spread their way of life and their knowledge this way? Couldn't it be as simple as a 'sharing of ideas' among the ancient cultures rather that some hidden, unseen, secret civilization teaching everyone their secrets? I mean the ancient egyptians could have easily sailed to the Americans and shared their building techniques and religious stories. If not the egyptians if could have been the Minoans.

I did like a lot of this book but I think sometimes Mr. Hancock is searching for something so extrodinary that he sometimes ignores the very clues and facts that he DOES find. If you don't believe me read his other books. He is so dead set on there being a "lost" society that he refuses to see somethinge right in front of his face.

3 out of 5 stars No connective tissue.......2007-06-04

The basic gist of the book it: (1) there was an advanced human civilization that developed on what is not Antarctica before the last Ice Age when the continent was habitable and further north; (2) this civilization developed sea-faring technology and journeyed to South/Central America, Egypt/the Middle East, and India; (3) these people passed on aspects of their culture and technology which have come down to us through myths, legends, and certain physical structures.

Hancock takes a lot of cultural traditions and archeological evidence and tries to fit it all into his over-arching thesis; it's kind of like a "unified theory of pre-history." True, it's very interesting and true, there are really no adequate explanations for some his evidence but that's very far from making the case. There just isn't much connective tissue here; it's mostly bizarre pieces of data stuck together with conjecture and imagination (or, as Hancock puts it: intuition).

To read this book and conclude that Hancock has "proved" the existence of pre-glacial civilization(s) (as have some reviewers here, apparently), you would have to be a moron. I have to admit, however, that there is enough here to give one pause. One cannot completely dismiss the theory.

It certainly seems possible (and, perhaps, even probable) that humanity reached some degree of civilization before the last Ice Age and all the global climatic catastrophes that went with it. But Antarctica? Even if you accept the explanation that the continent suddenly shifted south by 2,000 miles about 15,000 years ago, why would this super-civilization emerge there and so outpace human societal evolution elsewhere in the world? How would people have gotten there in the first place (or would Hancock claim that a branch of the human race evolved there independent of Africa and elsewhere?)

I could go on but I won't. Bottom line is: interesting but not compelling. It's an interesting theory and might even be possible, but lots of things are possible. FotG does not "prove" anything; it just presents one tantalizing theory to explain historical oddities that will probably never be explained.

5 out of 5 stars Ed Emberly is my hero and has been for over 30 years.......2007-05-19

When I was fresh out of college many moons ago and I have literally no experience or ability to draw even a stick man and that is the truth, a friend of mine at church was a kindergarten teacher and she referred me to the Ed Emberly drawing books and oh my. Happy happy day for me. ANd I used these with my now grown kids. They go step by step and start with like a circle and then add the ears and he creates so many fun books. The thumbprint books of his are fun activities to do with your children that any age loves, it is just too much fun, pretty soon the neighbors will be dropping in because they heard of the Emberly fun going on at your house. All of his books are marvelous, just get one and you will be sold !!!!!

My kids age 8, 5 & 2 1/2 all love making the figures from this book. It really inspires them to be creative & the drawings are easy to follow!! My 2 yr old can make his own cards with his own fingerprints.(We made thank you cards with colored ink & these cute ideas) I helped him finish off the pictures, but we all have a fun time!

5 out of 5 stars Ed Emberley's COMPLETE drawing book.......2007-02-06

This book gives a thorough selection of holidays, themes, and a wide variety of thumbprints to choose from. There are step by step sections for the beginner. The examples provide good color ideas as well.
In addition to using ones' thumb, the book encourages pinky finger prints, or even using just the tip of any finger. A great first thumbprint book!

5 out of 5 stars Great book, great gift!.......2007-01-15

This is a fun gift for kids and teachers. I even gave a copy to a fingerprint examiner and she thought it was a great gift. Brought a smile to her face, I think.

Book Description

In The Fingerprints of God best-selling author Robert Farrar Capon takes readers on a sleuthing project, using his own uniquely developed history of images to find evidence of the Divine Suspect in our midst." "Capon first explores various images that prompt proper talk about God and the nature of Scripture. The Bible, he says, is the mystery story of God's hidden presence as the Divine Suspect behind all history. Capon discusses the misuse of Scripture due to literalist interpretation, looks at the ways Christ has suffered at the hands of human image-makers, and proposes a novel understanding of salvation history that clarifies the proper roles of Scripture, the Holy Spirit, and Jesus." "In the second part of the book Capon turns his magnifying glass on major thinkers from church history - Irenaeus, Athanasius, Anselm, Luther, Melanchthon, Calvin, Julian of Norwich, and others - pointing out both the strong and the weak images they have produced. Throughout the centuries, Capon sees God as the "Divine Bowler" trying to knock down the faulty "pins" of ideas that have been set up in the lanes of religious history, while also disclosing himself in profound and powerful ways.

4 out of 5 stars Re-forming the Reformation.......2000-08-08

Father Capon has done it again! He has given us food for thought with his own unique spin. True, he makes points that he's already made in preceding books - but in this one, he zeros in on the mistakes of some of the church fathers and puts a name to it - "transactionalism" - the old left-brain idea that one must contribute some kind of coin - sacrifice, repentance, good works - whatever - to deserve the free gift of forgiveness and grace given by God from the get-go to humanity. The Reformation kicked transactionalism out the front door, proclaiming salvation by grace, through faith, (not works), but let it right back in the back door by stipulating that faith was the current coin of the realm.

In his own inimitable style, Father Capon has the Holy Spirit saying (in a dialogue among the Trinity at the beginning of the book), "They're going to paint themselves into a corner and say that the unbaptized go to hell or even that sins after Baptism make forgiveness flake off like a bad paint job, and that unless Christians go to confession for a second coat before they die, they'll go to hell too. Oh sure. We've also agreed on this Reformation business where I convince them that nobody has to do anything to be forgiven except trust the grace that Jesus has already given everybody. But give them a hundred years after that and they'll manage to turn faith itself into a requirement for grace: no faith, no forgiveness. Out the window again goes the free gift we've given them once and for all; and back in comes forgiveness as a deal that's good only as long as they behave themselves."

The author goes on to explain how the great church reformers such as Irenaeus, Athanasius. Luther, Calvin and Melanchthon, while contributing invaluable insights essential to a true reformation, still slipped in this pernicious transactionalism. "Human beings aren't afraid of accountability," says Capon's Holy Spirit, "they're crazy about it. If they can't get credit for themselves or dish out blame to others, they cry, 'Unfair!'"

Father Capon says he was originally planning to call the book *Re-forming the Reformation* and I think that may have been a better title for it (a worthy double entendre) because the book seems to hang together on the explication of these wrong turns in Christendom better than it does on an exploration of images. The only time images take center stage is when the author is talking about Literalism/Fundamentalism vs. Liberalism (turning the Bible into a book of ethics and denying the mystery) and he says both views are mistakes. God can jolly well use any device he wants to tell the STORY of scripture - images in poetry, hyperbole, allegory, parables, and yes, even literalism - even though the latter is seldom employed. So literalism is madness and deconstructivist liberalism takes all the vital juice out of it and who needs that?

The history of church thought that the author covers is most valuable and enlightening, but I thought that the imaginary dialogue with the church fathers toward the end of the book was a bit pedantic and tedious. Most of the same points were made in an earlier chapter.

But the burning question, to my mind, is - isn't the atonement itself a transaction no matter how you slice it? Just as C.S. Lewis says that the fall of man didn't HAVE to happen, did the atonement HAVE to take place? What dark necessity required it? Was it a god above and beyond or behind the Father as the god of Destiny was behind and beyond and above Zeus? We find out what the atonement is NOT. It's not a "ransom" - a transaction between God and the devil; it's not a task - a "what" that Jesus accomplished by fulfilling a transactional bill of particulars; it's not even a "bait and switch scam perpetrated by God himself" where "the cross is a mousetrap for the devil" (although Capon seems to favor this interpretation above the other two because it has a sense of humor). But I'm still scratching my head. How ELSE to see the atonement except as SOME kind of transaction?

To be fair to Capon, this was a burning question with me long before I read *The Fingerprints of God*, but since his earlier books (that little gem of Theodicy) *The Third Peacock* and the Parable books (Parables of the Kingdom, Judgment and Grace) changed my life and outlook, I was hoping this one would answer that question. Who knows? Maybe the next one will. In any case, Robert Farrar Capon's books are all and always worth reading, in my opinion. Read this one. Read his others. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Burns the Heart.......2000-08-04

Fr. Capon has a book that gives me an Emmaus experience. This author has been gifted with the ability to present the Gospel in fresh ways that light a fire inside. Like his other works, Capon has been careful in his accuracy, yet prophetic in his mission. He is one of the few authors today who side steps the modern avalanche of pious moralisms. Rather, he seeks to present the Word in context and in the radical and revolutionary power of what God is saying to us. From page one, I found my well-constructed theological walls of presumption and complacency being chipped starting to crumble. Not a casual read, but an incredble journey for someone who already has inner hints that there must be something more than we have been told about God's relationship to us!

With little more than some ink, paper, and your own fingers, you can become an artist! Caldecott recipient Ed Emberley, author of Go Away, Big Green Monster!, as well as many creative art books (Ed Emberley's Great Thumbprint Drawing Book, Ed Emberley's Drawing Book: Make a World, etc.), shows readers how to turn fingerprints into lions, basketball players, reindeer, "bean buddies," submarines, rainbow dragons, trees, even watermelon. Emberley provides straightforward information about materials and techniques on the very first page, then sets readers free to discover and explore. Step by step, Emberley takes artists through the process, showing, for each picture, a fingerprint first, then adding simple lines and other fingerprints to make the print evolve into an entirely new entity. A mouse, for example, starts out as a brown oval fingerprint. Next, two pink fingertip-print ears are added. A black dot makes a nose. Two smaller dots become the eyes, and finally a few lines turn this blob into a bewhiskered mouse head. Young artists can spend hours creating designs, patterns, and decorative scenes with this fun technique, especially if they move on to advanced finger-printing on the last page. I used this book for 400 Girl Scouts at a day camp. The fingerprint animals and people worked for all ages and the girls loved to try new things from the book. Thanks for all the great fingerprint ideas. :)

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2007-01-10

I was not familiar with this book before I bought it; however, it was recommended by the teachers of the students for which this and several other Ed Emberley books were purchased. From the thank yous I have received, this book was a real hit! It is used in a Native American Mission School with great enthusiasm and even better results. What more could you ask for?

5 out of 5 stars A hit!.......2006-07-06

I used samples made from the book for a kid's craft at our library. The kid's and myself had a lot of fun.

5 out of 5 stars Neat Idea for a Gift.......2006-03-04

I bought this for my niece's 5th birthday along with about 10 different colors of kid's washable stamp pads (from an education store and from a craft store). It is my understanding that some of the stamp pads used for "stamping" take awhile to dry and are permanent (not a good combo for kids--I could see them on the clothes and smudged across the paper) GET THE KIDS THE QUICK DRY WASHABLE KIND OF INK! Hampton Art made the kind I purchased. They also make a "smelly" version. Grape, bubble gum, etc. Though this would be a hit, I had a budget. Anyway, you want different colors of ink to make all of the different, fun characters. I put the pads in a box with a black liquid ink pen. She seemed very interested. Her mom thought it was neat and her other aunt who is a first grade teacher looked it over and asked where she could get one for her class. I wish I had this book when I was a kid. Very cool. I would say that this book could be for all ages but is most appropriate for elementary age children and younger.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and Easy.......2005-10-24

My kids have had a ball with these. Only thing...be sure you spend the extra $ for kids washable stamp pads! I used regular cheapo dollar stamp pads....uh uh. Won't wash off very easy!

Great for kids of all artistic levels.

Book Description

A thumb print left at the scene of a grisly murder. Fingerprints taken from a getaway car used in a bank robbery. A palm print recovered from the shattered glass door of a burglarized home. Indeed, where crimes are committed, careless perpetrators will invariably leave behind the critical pieces of evidence-most likely in the form of fingerprints-needed to catch and convict them. But the science of fingerprint identification isn't always as cut and dry as detective novels and movies make it out to be. Quantitative-Qualitative Friction Ridge Analysis, a new book in the ongoing Practical Aspects of Criminal and Forensic Investigations series, examines the latest methods and techniques in the science of friction ridge identification, or ridgeology. David R. Ashbaugh examines every facet of the discipline, from the history of friction ridge identification and its earliest pioneers and researchers, to the scientific basis and the various steps of the identification process. The structure and growth of friction skin and how it can leave latent or visible prints are examined, as well as advanced identification methods in ridgeology, including Poroscopy, Edgeoscopy, Pressure Distortion and Complex or Problem Print Analysis. The book, which features several detailed illustrations and photographs, also includes a new method for Palmar Flexion Crease Identification (palm lines) designed by the author and which has helped solve several criminal cases where fingerprints were not available. For crime scene technicians, forensic identification specialists, or anyone else pursuing a career in forensic science, this book is arguably the definitive source in the science of friction ridge identification.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2002-05-11

I don't feel the need to reiterate the praises that have been given this book as to its usefulness for latent print examiners.

I can say, however, that this book is great for students of forensic science (like myself) or the average reader as well. Unlike popular accounts of forensic science, it is not thrilling or adventurous. Those types of books will tell you that a person can leave a fingerprint at a scene, an investigator can find it, and then match it up in a database. Slim on the details, high on the "excitement" scale. And unlike the average MFS class, it is not dry, boring, and intended to give you only enough knowledge to do some damage.

So, for those of us interested in how forensic science -actually- works, and in depth, this book is a great textbook covering all aspects of fingerprint analysis. It includes a particularly good chapter detailing nothing but the ways that fingerprints are formed in vitro - their creation, topology, and cross-section. It includes detail on the many ways that a print can be deposited, as well as the different substrates and surfaces they can be deposited on, and the types of distortion that each of these can cause. This book is not light reading, but if you are truly interested in learning more about how fingerprints work, and how analysts can identify them, then you should have no trouble enjoying this book.

If I were to point out only one flaw, it would be that Ashbaugh's agenda is too much in the fore. I would rather read about how fingerprints are analyzed than hear propaganda backing up the field as a legitimate science. His analysis in and of itself is adequate to illustrate the scientific principles underlying latent print analysis. It would have been more interesting for him to mention some of the reasons people believe that it is -not- a legitimate science, and refute those through simply through the precision of his text.

5 out of 5 stars Ridgeology will change your life!.......2001-12-07

If you are a latent print examiner, this book is an absolute must have. Friction ridge skin is unique and persistent. Ridgeolgy will give you a better understanding of friction ridge skin. The book also will also help you explain what you see when you make an identification. If you live in the world of point counters, this book will shock and amaze you. David Ashbaugh is a true visionary in the forensic identification world. This book should be in every crime scene investigator's library.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a must read for all latent print examiners.......2001-10-02

This is an excellant book for all latent print examiners. The book goes into great detail that may not be understood by the average reader not familiar with the science. The book covers the philosophy, methodology, premises, and history of fingerprint identification. This should be the reference book used by all examiners.

Book Description

The role we each play in our own downfalls create the profound--and profoundly entertaining--basis for this series of linked "meditations" as the author of The Abilene Paradox takes another irreverent look at the nature of life on the job. In this work, Harvey explores the ethical, moral, and spiritual dilemmas we all face in the modern world of work. But he does it in a most unconventional way. His is an approach that mixes equal parts humor, philosophy, and insight to make us laugh, think, and examine organizational behavior in a brand new light. The twelve essays themselves carry such spirited titles as "What If I Really Believe this Stuff," "On Tooting Your Own Horn," and "Ode to Waco." Altogether, it's an enthralling collection of wise and witty parables that illustrate the redemptive value of the truth in a voice that is ultimately understanding of human shortcomings.

5 out of 5 stars Harvey Tells It Like It Is.......2007-04-01

A must read! Harvey begins the book by relating and analyzing an event that happened when he was six years old. At once, the windows of my mind opened, and I began to be able to understand a lot of what has happened in my own life. I laughed out loud after reading on page 36 about the organizational back stabbing victim: "Blood flowing, he [ the Potential Victim] continues his journey into Real Victim status by retreating to the security of the organization's infirmary, which usually is located in the Human Resource Department, for an extended period of recovery." Been there, done that!

4 out of 5 stars The views of a sage.......2006-09-01

I don't know what posessed me to pick up this book at the library. I'm not an avid reader and I was doing research on an unrelated topic. I suppose the title just grabbed me and I needed a break from my regular study. When I started reading this book, however, I didn't want to put it down. At age 39, I'm only just beginning to appreciate the wisdom 50+ years develops in some people. So when I started reading this very easy-to-read book, filled with "smart" humor and just the right amount of antedotal support, I was just soaking in everything I could. Maybe you have to be older to appreciate this book...but wouldn't it be great if you were smart enough to learn from it much younger....

4 out of 5 stars Interesting ruminations on ramanagement.......2004-12-30

The book centers on a key concept - we victimize ourselves. Work is a political place, but most of the time, we see problems coming. If someone stabs us in the back, usually we get a warning, but are complicit by not assertively contacting the person doing us in. This idea of defeating poor office behavior through open and honest discussion is developed in depth throughout the book.

There are two downsides. First, this book perhaps has too much text for such a simple concept. Although this is good reading for a fan of Jerry Harvey (I am one!) the Abilene Paradox is a much more efficient (more ideas, less words) introduction to his material. Second, Jerry is perhaps oversimplifying the world. Office politics is best beaten by open book confrontation of problems, but life sometimes is more complex than that.

That said, this is still a worthwhile read.

5 out of 5 stars Only for those who think..........2004-08-02

Jerry Harvey is great. The Abiline Paradox was wonderfully insightful and helpful and this one is also wonderful. His insights into spirituality, morality and human psychology are profound and helpful. This book is easy to read, it is fun and funny, but it is not a cookbook that tells you to do A, B, and C. It just helps you think deeply. If you want a cookbook there are a thousand books out there, I'm tired of them. Even the title of this book is thought provoking as is the rest of the book. Think for a change!

1 out of 5 stars Open ended musings with no conclusions.......2004-05-24

As you've probably noticed from the other reviews, J. Harvey does a good job raising questions about morality related management decisions, e.g. backstabbing or betraying a co-worker.

My own enjoyment of the book suffered because there are no answers to the questions posed. Morality is not the sort of topic where one expects to the THE answer. However, I do require a speaker/writer to at least propose their answers, so I may compare and contrast them to my own views.

I recommend this book if you prefer an open-ended discussion with no suggested or implied solutions.

For new managers with their first inkling they might have a few misconceptions about what they've just gotten into, I recommend "Becoming a Manger: How New Managers Master the Challenges of Leadership" by Linda Hill.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Introduction..........2003-02-08

This is a very good introduction to fingerprint classification for beginners. It does not cover IAFIS/AFIS, but it is good as a basic fingerprint primer none the less.

If you are just researching fingerprints, this is a very good primer to get you started.

The book does not pretend to say that you will learn everything about prints, but rather that you will understand the basics of what everything is about.

Another reason that if your prints are onfile and you are bad, you likely get busted sooner or later....:)

4 out of 5 stars Introduction to Fingerprint Examination under the microscope.......2001-04-11

As someone wanting to get into Crime Scene Investigation, I found this book extremely helpful in establishing a solid base to learn from about a very important field: fingerprints. Anyone going into a career like this should definately read this book. Though some of the principles where confusing, and required a couple readovers, I quickly came to understand what was important when dealing with fingerprints.

Book Description

The challenge of a fully automatic fingerprint-recognition system continues to motivate many researchers to address fingerprints and related problems. In addition to fingerprint analysis in law enforcement, civilian applications are now being planned because of unique benefits that fingerprint technology offers. Automatic Fingerprint Recognition Systems assesses the challenges for achieving fully automatic operation. In addition, it examines advances in the various aspects of fingerprint recognition: newer models of individuality analysis, new technologies for inkless sensors, empirical evaluation of fingerprint recognition performance, synthetic generation of fingerprint images, fingerprint videos, and new large-scale systems for fingerprint identification. The book offers a history of fingerprint research and also confronts its future -- in particular, how research in the allied fields of computer vision, image processing, pattern recognition, and empirical performance evaluation will advance the science and technology of fingerprint identification.

5 out of 5 stars In depth state of the art book for serious researchers.......2006-11-06

This book is a collection of essays that manages to cohere and give a very readable in-depth review of the state of the art. I would recommend purchasing this book with the "Handbook of Fingerprint Recognition" by Maltoni et. al. The quality of the writing is remarkably good, but a little bit more technical than in the handbook. I found the first chapter on history especially interesting, but you would probably not spend all that money on this book for leisure reading.

Book Description

The field of fingerprinting for personal identification and criminal investigation is progressing at a rapid rate. Numerous research projects are devoted to fingerprint detection techniques and identification issues, and recent debate focuses on the admissibility of fingerprint evidence in US courts. In light of these events, as well as the previous lack of one volume that brings together the scientific and legal aspects of this discipline, the time is ideal for an easily accessible resource that gathers together and analyzes the latest findings and techniques related to fingerprint science. Fingerprints and Other Ridge Skin Impressions features the insight of a recognized team of authorities, including contributors from a key institution for forensic research. Chapters cover all aspects of the subject including the formation of friction ridges on the skin, the deposition of latent prints, the detection and enhancement of such marks, recording of fingerprint evidence, and fingerprint identification itself. Recent advances in statistical interpretation, fingerprint detection techniques, and computer technology are also discussed in detail. This practical techniques manual is an ideal text for practitioners working in the field of fingerprint detection and identification, as well as anyone studying forensic science at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. There is also sufficient background material for legal professionals and police in need of an introduction to the critical subject of fingerprinting.

5 out of 5 stars Shaking habits.......2004-06-11

Originating from the Forensic University of Lausanne (Switzerland), the authors produced an up-to-date register of not only optico-physico-chemical skin impression developments, but also of their interpretation to produce a ridge (fingerprint, barefoot) individualization.
Their historical and scientific approach of "fingerprint science" shakes also the tree of identification dogmatism of both the anglo-saxon system (the certainty of identification is based on empiricist expert's knowledge based on ridgeology) and the more latine one (a pseudo-scientific numerical standard ascertains individualization by a mathematical "statistical" proof...).
Setting the true pillars of fingerprints identification will help criminalists to better understand the place of ridge impression as the most powerful identification tool within the whole spectrum of evidences collected at and exploited from the scene of crime, and hopefully entertain a needed critical approach to upgrade its potential.
