Book Description
Every month in Esquire, the captains of industry (Jack Welch) and the pop culture icons (Gene Simmons, Loretta Lynn), the leaders (Rudolph Giuliani) and the loudmouths (Don Rickles), reveal their philosophy of life in the What I’ve Learned column. Ten entertaining years’ worth of their often-humorous, always thoughtful advice, along with stunning portrait photography, is gathered in this sharply designed compilation. The contributors include Muhammad Ali, Bill O’Reilly, Faye Dunaway, former Secretary of State Robert McNamara, Hugh Hefner, Elvis Costello, Lou Reed, Suge Knight, and Julia Child.

Full of info!.......2007-02-19
I bought this book for my 19 year old son. He had heard about it and now is always quoting things from it. He found it very, very intersting!
An enjoyable read.......2006-11-10
This book is an fascinating and entertaining peek into the real people we see on the big screen. The interviews are brief, one page each, and that is good and bad. Good because it can be read in short bites, bad because it leaves the reader wanting more. The "stars" are people too. This is a glimpse into who they are.
Fantastic portraits.......2006-07-01
Have always enjoyed "The Meaning of Life" page on Esquire - and to see a large collection of these - and many that i've missed - in one book is just great!
So many different popular characters and personalities and interesting views on the ways of life.
Good book.......2006-03-19
I found this book very interesting. I found out a lot about people that I liked and learned about new ones as well. Very good book, light reading and fun. Highly recommend.

If your interested in what shapes extraordinary people into who they are then this book is for you. I loved it from the first page. I read this book from start to finish in one sitting. Thats a first.

Descent but incomplete.......2007-07-17
This is the best casino chip price guide currently available. It is incomplete in that it does not include any of the Silver Strikes or metal slot token issues.
The price guide is a paperback, not a hardcover as listed in the title.
Terrific Chip Guide.......2007-05-29
Was shipped fast and the chip guide is finely detailed, many color photos and very inclusive. A MUST have for a serious chip collector.
A Must for Casino Chip Collectors and Gaming History Buffs.......2007-01-11
If you collect casino chips, or are just interested in the history of casinos and casino chips, then this book is a must. Every conceivable chip from just about every casino that ever existed is displayed. Chips are all listed with an estimated value which is very useful, especially for the casual collector like myself. There is a thorough discussion of chip characteristics and grading criteria. The research that went into this book is phenomenal. Mr. Campiglia has painstakingly documented sales, scarcity and the history of each and every chip. The book is well laid out with color photos of each chip and many photos of the casinos they came from. There are also many interesting factoids and anecdotes pertaining to the history of casinos in America. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and refer to it often as I build my collection. I give this book my highest recommendation.
Great Pricing Guide.......2007-01-04
This book was created with the chip collector in mind. It has great color pictures of many chips and explains the values very well.No chip is left behind in this complete softcover compact book. This 3rd edition is a must have for any chip collector.

Book Description
First Published In 1962, This Wonderfully Provocative Book Introduced The Notion Of "pseudo-events" -- Events Such As Press Conferences And Presidential Debates, Which Are Manufactured Solely In Order To Be Reported -- And The Contemporary Definition Of Celebrity As "a Person Who Is Known For His Well-knownness." Since Then Daniel J. Boorstin's Prophetic Vision Of An America Inundated By Its Own Illusions Has Become An Essential Resource For Any Reader Who Wants To Distinguish The Manifold Deceptions Of Our Culture From Its Few Enduring Truths.
Customer Reviews:
Powerful and Superb.......2007-01-07
When our college class read this book in the 1980's I was stunned by the author's powerful critique and magnetic prose. Author Daniel Boorstin uses these pages to both explain and to criticize our media, television, advertising, our changing world and American arrogance at home and around the globe circa the early 1960's. The author is more bent on promoting social critique than proposing solutions, but his powerful writing leads reader to think critically, and to employ an ever-present level of skepticism. For those reasons alone this is a vitally important book, one that should be required classroom reading.
Daniel Boorstin (1914-2004) was a superbly talented historian who was named by President Ford to head the Smithsonian Institute. Readers that enjoy this powerful 1962 critique may enjoy his other books, particularly his Pulitzer-prize winner THE AMERICANS: THE DEMOCRATIC EXPERIENCE.
Every person fond of traveling ought to read The Image .......2006-02-28
It's been over six years since my first reading of this book, yet lessons I learned from Boorstin still pepper my daily thinking. His perspective of psuedo-events and the way humans travel in other countries shakes ingrained American paradigms. I've never attended a parade, watched a televised sporting event, or bought a tourist souvenir in the same way since!
He saw what it would look like .......2005-11-16
Boorstin described what he believed to be a major change in culture, the substitution of image for substance. He saw that the ease of production and reproduction of visual imagery would lead to a diminished interest in the written and printed word. He saw the rise of the superficial manipulative public relations and advertising culture replacing one based on a serious quest for Truth.
His work has been enormously productive in that it has been taken up by many disciples among them the major critics of the TV view of the world.
Nonetheless I wonder what Boorstin would make of today's world in which there is not only such a vast ease in the reproduction and dissemination of visual images but also one in which written text is producted and disturbed at quantites beyond any known before.
This is of course written by one of those old- time word people who does share Boorstin's view that if you wish to study any subject in real depth you have to do more than look at images about it- you have to read about it.
Strong Start, Teetering End.......2005-02-05
This book is kind of like an affair - exhilarating at the start, cooling as it goes alone and just kind of annoying at the end. Was instantly enthralled within the first few pages, the book seemed to so well encapsulate our modern society and its preoccupation with image over substance. The fact that The Image retains this ability despite it being first published in 1961 makes it all the more impressive. While the book certainly is dated, filled with quaint references to phonographs and the like, it is not outdated.
Some of the alarmism (or extremism) of the book might have been caused by the newness of the technology at the time Boorstin's writing. It is almost humorous to think of the stroke that Boorstine no doubt would have had if he had known of the profusion of technology to come and the way that it would only further facilitate this culture of images.
If I could offer some advice to anyone planning to read this book... tear out the last page. Burn it, swallow it, shred it - whatever you had to do to keep yourself from reading it. All along I had been asking myself what was the solution to the problems that Boorstine seemed to feel was represented in this post `graphic revolution' society and unfortunately for me I got what I was wishing for - Boorstine's solution. To end an intellectually stimulating book with something about as intellectual as a bumper sticker that says `hug your child everyday' was extremely disappointing. I won't really go into it except to say that you would be better off (and enjoy the book much more) not reading it.
A Major Social Theory.......2005-01-15
Serious readers should be impressed by any book- written by an American Professor- that is still printed and sold over 35 years after original publication. Boorstin was a major 20th century historian who was never forgiven, by the common run academic historian, for not being formally schooled in history. Proof that it is not only the average high school graduate & his parents who confuse schooling for education. Boorstin was a major Professor of History at the University of Chicago who possessed two JD degrees, one from Harvard and one from Oxford, and who was simultaneously member of the American and British Bar. He had no former schooling beyond law school.
Even more unforgivable, Boorstin, a Professor of History, penned a major work of social theory and social criticism in the 1960s (when radical students would not allow him to speak in his own classroom)But then, many historians still insist world recognized sociologist-historian Charles Tilly is not a (tell your history teacher the proper article is 'a', not 'an') historian and many sociologists claim he is not a sociologist. No matter. Tilly's work stands long after his critics are forgotten. Likewise, Boorstin's work has outlived that of most of his critics.
"The Image" presents Boorstin's acute observation that in Modern American public life image matters more than substance, especially in the market place and also in the corporate work place. A criticsm I have of "Image" is that Boorstin did not examine the decline of character(substance) and the rise of personality(social lubricant). It seems to me that the cult of "personality" (Outpatient therapists mostly "treat" personality problems, not mental illness) goes hand in hand with the "image" and "pseudo-event" phenomenon he labels and discusses.
Although the Image focuses primarily on the news media, many tiny academic careers have been established by Professors who cannabalized ideas from "The Image" (The Lynd's "Middletown" is another book cannabalized by academics for "new" research ideas. I recommend "Middletown" to history and urban cultural anthropology graduate students who have no real research ideas). That is, more than a few academics have risen to full professor status and salary by compiling a 'study' based on an idea plundered from "The Image."
Readers who like "The Image" should find Erving Goffman social-psychology theory enlightening, especially his classic "Presentation of Self in Everyday Life," another book that observes image has become more important than substance.
"The Image" (and Erving Goffman's work) is well written, clear, even an enjoyable read. Boorstin is a major academic historian who writes well and who knows how to 'tell a story.' "The Image" is not just for swells, autodidacts, or intellectuals. Readers interested in business, corporate or govenment careers can benefit considerably from insights obtained from Boorstin. His "Image" (and Goffman's "Presentation of Self...") can be used as "how to" manuals. Unfortunately, some readers will use these observations to better exploit people.

Standard Price Guide to U.S. Scouting Collectibles (Standard.......2003-11-27
What a great resourse book. A must have for the avid collector or the novice. Besides collecting, it is a great companion piece to learn about the Boy Scouts and 20th Century Americana in general. I commend Mr. Cuhaj for all the work and time he put into creating this. I'm so glad some one thought enough of me to make this a perfect gift for the Scouter who has everything.
The Year 2001 U.S. Scout Collectibles Reference Work.......2001-11-01
This is the 2nd, updated edition of the popular volume. Its 400 pages feature more than 750 nice black and white photos and a 16 page full color section. There is adequate text to accompany the photos, and it is fully indexed to aid in item location. All major levels of scouting are featured, along with collectibles, council listings, glossary of terms, memorabilia dealers, collector organizations, museums and reference works. It's an essential guide for scout collectible enthusiasts.
"Standard Price Guide To U. S. Scouting Collectibles" 2nd Ed.......2001-09-10
This is an excellent book for anyone who collects Boy Scouts of America memorabilia such as insignia, pins, books, Order Of The Arrow, just about anything that has been involved in Scouting. It details many items extensively, and provides price ranges based on condition. The first edition did not have an index, and it was rather difficult to find certain items, but Cuhaj corrected that in this second edition. The magnitude of this book is tremendous, providing over 11,000 listings, most with values for buying, selling, or just trading. There are a few pages in color, while the rest is in black and white. I would have preferred all items in color, and would have been willing to pay more for the book. If Scouting memorabilia is your forte, I highly recommend this book with a 5-Star rating.
A Must-Have for Anyone Interested in Scouting Collectibles.......2001-08-09
The first edition was the answer to a new collector's prayers and the release of the greatly expanded second edition was timed perfectly to take me to the next level in this increasingly popular field of collecting. This book brings together a broad range of information that earlier had only been available to collectors willing to seek out a daunting number of specialty publications, usually at considerable cost. I would highly recommend this new edition not only for beginning collectors, but also for the more advanced collector who needs a broad reference to the panoply of Scouting collectibles. Finally, I think most readers will enjoy the author's personal touch, including images from his boyhood Scouting experience. They certainly evoked fond memories of my own early Scouting days.
A few words from the Author.......2001-06-01
Greetings, well, it is back, bigger and with lots more photos. What has become the identification and price guide for scouting collectibles has been doubled in listing size as well as photographs for ease of identification. While weekly auctions may be skewing the price system, it is a great starting point. The Merit Badge section, and the book sections have been completely revised.

Once upon a time in the United States, before the ubiquitous yellow arches of a certain hamburger chain spread like chicken pox, eating on the go was an occasion. Those long-gone days when customer service was number one--and meals were dished up by enthusiastic young women costumed to resemble drum majorettes--are captured in this compilation of vintage photographs and memorabilia, crammed to overflowing with nostalgia.

Drive Inns.......2007-01-23
Talk about filled with information-this book has all of the pictures and the details behind the car hops. I thought the uniqueness behind the Tam O Shanter was cool. Also, the celebrities that went to the drive inns and what they ordered. The book explains some of the history behind the word "car hop." Just a fun, light read!!! Highly recommended for those people who remember going to the A&W or other drive inn, especially in California.

Reminiscences of famous points of interest that have closed are provided for the completist, for historical perspective, and for those seeking information on the current status of a favorite tiki site.

book.......2007-09-15
great book. loaded with info. on tiki. the only thing missing was web sites for the places in the book. it would be nice to find more info. otherwise great book with a lot of info.
Worth the Upgrade.......2007-06-27
So you already have a no doubt well-worn copy of the first edition of "TRT" and you're wondering if it's worth buying this new one?
Yes. Get it.
Sure, you've got the expected updates to the fast-changing world of tiki, along with more of the tell-it-like-it-is reviews that were the first edition's trademark.
But Teitelbaum has also expanded the historical information about locations that are no longer with us. And there seem to be more photos and other "urban archaeological" tidbits sprinkled throughout, giving it more of the flavor of Sven Kirsten's "Book of Tiki". These are welcome improvements, and it makes this edition just as suited for armchair reading as it is for actual trip planning.
Maps, perhaps one at the beginning of each state's section, would've been nice. Many of these tiki spots are in the suburbs, which can make it difficult to tell what's near the particular city you're visiting if you're not familiar with the names of the surrounding towns. But that's not enough of a quibble to detract from a solid, five-star rating.
Great book to include in all your retro vacation planning.......2005-10-17
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have used the reviews while on several different trips, to Las Vegas, San Diego, and in Southern California. A lot of this info could not be found elsewhere!
A word of advice to lucky purchasers of this book however--do double check, call ahead, and make sure your destination still exists! I have made several blunders as well assuming that a place was open for lunch when many are nightspots only.
That said, a great guide (and check out the inside of the Hanalei/Red Lion Hotel in San Diego--the bartenders make a mean scorpion in a nifty souvenier bowl!!)
Nice book, needs updating.......2005-09-14
In the ever changing world of Tiki land, you need an up to date reference. Please update this great book with a new edition!!
Scattershot but worthwhile.......2003-09-13
Tiki Road Trip is an excellent, if somewhat scattershot guide of Tiki bars, restaurants, and other Polynesian-themed facilities. Teitelbaum provides names, addresses, reviews and in some cases, photos to help you plan your next driving trip.
The author's reviews vary from cursory to pretty detailed. His emphasis is on the "Tikiness" of each place, based on decor, atmosphere, and food/drink. I didn't always agree with his "TiPSY" rating of some places, primarily because his emphasis seems to be primarily on Tiki decorations. I felt that Teitelbaum did not give enough weight to rarer architectural features (e.g. lava rock construction, A-framed roofs, etc.) in calculating his TiPSY scores. However, he states in the beginning that TiPSYness ratings are subjective, so any criticism described here is very minor.
This book isn't so much a road trip guide, as it is a compendium of Tiki joints past and present. While some places are alive and well, Teitelbaum includes places that are closed - in some cases for many years. Some of the Tiki spots documented are long forgotten, and the only testament that they even existed is a mug or matchbook. Also the addresses or, in some cases, cities of some of the spots listed are not provided.
A few improvements would help with subsequent editions of this guide. An index would be useful. Tables listing Tiki joints by TiPSYness, category, etc. would also be beneficial. Another recommendation is the inclusion of maps, at least at the state level. Finally, color photos are a must. Teitelbaum includes some outstanding pictures, unfortunately all in black and white.
While this book could be a bit better, it is still a must have for Tiki buffs.
Book Description
This amazing portrait of the bizarre, shocking, weird, and wonderful moments that have come to define American popular culture is a follow-up to the critically acclaimed James Dean Died Here and Marilyn Monroe Dyed Here. A third collection of the locations where the most significant events in American popular culture took place, this offers a fully illustrated encyclopedic look at the most famous—and infamous—pop culture events, providing historical information on more than 600 landmarks as well as their exact locations. Included in the wacky and fantastic listing of landmarks and events are the Los Angeles park where Elvis Presley and his entourage would organize spirited touch football games against other celebrities, the birthplaces of Coca-Cola and the corn dog, the place where Ben Franklin flew a kite, the hotel where Rob Lowe's scandalous sex tape was filmed, Quentin Tarantino's video store, and the location where Tennessee Williams wrote A Streetcar Named Desire.

Elvis Presley Passed Here.......2005-07-19
A third great book in this series, (James Dean Died Here; Marilyn Monroe Dyed Here), by author Chris Epting. All three are must haves for anyone interested in American pop and historical icons. With a location and brief summary, each place is easily found. Plus Chris has gone to great strides as to the accuracy of the factual information given. I personally know Chris by way of email and snail mail, and I can tell you he is a great person with a great personality, and that those qualities shine through in his work as well.
Elvis Presley Passed Here.......2005-06-02
Another outstanding book from Chris Epting. A must for every glove compartment or carry-on flight bag--this is your instant guide to "where it happened". As always with Mr. Epting's previous books--it is well researched, with addresses and directions, photographs, and great descriptions of the actual sites where history was made. This is that perfect gift for any age--and an absolute must for any traveler. When is the Travel Channel going to make Mr. Epting's books into a series? PS: besides his trilogy pop culture books he has written the world's best sports book: Roadside Baseball--take this one with you too as you travel this summmer. Like with all his books--you won't be able to put it down (includes a great forward from Joe Buck). When was the last time an author was so much fun to read but you were educated at the same time?
This Book Has Become An Essential Part Of My Travel Library!.......2005-05-17
Elvis Passed Here is the third in this series of books written by Chris Epting, and as I expected, exceeds my expectations. As with the previous books (James Dean Died Here & Marilyn Monroe Dyed Here), Chris guides us to the locations of other pop culture landmarks. What I particularly like about these books is the broad range of categories he chooses to cover. In addition to the categories one would expect (movies, music, art, etc.), Chris has also included chapters dedicated to such bizarre subjects as infamous celebrity events, historical tragic events, and crime.
I was fascinated to learn about pop culture locations in and around the city where I live. Locations that I didn't even know existed, or that I have probably seen countless times and not taken notice of.
This book, and those before it, have also added a new dimension to vacations and trips for me. Whenever I plan a trip, I now consult these books to see what pop culture locations exist where I'm going. For example, on our recent trip to New York City, I was able to eat at the first pizzeria in North America, visit the club where Jimi Hendrix was discovered, sit at the table where the famous scene from "When Harry Met Sally" was filmed, and find the location where the photo on the cover of Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti album was taken.
I would definitely recommend this book to those who want to add a fun and exciting new element to their travels!
This is a Pop-culture Traveler's "Must Have".......2005-05-03
Epting has done it again. He continues to take us on the road to "live" the events that happened in America's history. We toured with James Dean and then Marilyn Monroe. The third book in his trilogy is as exciting as his predecessors and a must have if you are an Epting "junkie." If for nothing else get this book to complete the set; after all who has only two volumes of "Lord of the Rings"? It's time to grab your camera and get out on the road. Come on; tell me who wouldn't want to fly a kite in the same place as Ben?

Book Description
The book begins with a discussion of vernacular housing and American culture and makes the case that dwellings reflect the people of different regions, materials, techniques, and design traditions of an earlier time. The history of American housing is reviewed with biographies and bibliographies, setting the stage for the environmental and social science perspective of housing. Residential environments are then considered in the broad sense of home and housing. Neighborhood and community are examined with a special focus on people, behavior, and the physical setting. The arts and popular media chapter presents American popular housing as image and icon, focusing on the arts and popular media as "channels" of visual and symbolic information or communication. These channels include painting, prints, pattern books, photography, music, film, television and video, literature, "how-to" manuals, and newspapers and magazines. Taking a macro-level perspective, direct and indirect programs of public administration and policy for housing are discussed. Then, the complex systems of financing, and the prevalance and mechanisms for matching buyers with sellers is considered in the chapter that considers housing finance, marketing, economics and management. The chapter on environmental design, construction process, and technology reviews the professional disciplines and their perspectives on housing, special populations and accessibility needs, descriptions of building trades, terms, materials, construction processes and past industrial housing experiments, as well as issues of energy management, computer technology, futuristic housing, air quality and household hazards. Using current technology to conduct research, the final chapter breaks from the conventional ways of locating hard-copy, copyrighted references to a seemingly endless potential of electronic communication systems such as data tapes; on-line databases; other electronic databases; electronic mail; listserves, chat, and on-line communities; libraries; on-line electronic texts; software; and news and journals including electronic journals.

Customer Reviews:
i'm chinese-canadian and i loved this book!.......2003-04-03
i bought this book 3 1/2 yrs ago and it's been one of my favourites ever since. it is humourous and easy to read. the book touches on a huge range of subjects concerning a variety of cultures (chinese, korean, japanese, indian, thai, taiwanese, filipino, etc. )which is something no other book has done. because of this i think everyone will learn something new.
for all those critics who didn't like the book, i think you take yourselves too seriously... the book is suppose to be a fun introduction to asian culture, not an in depth study of all things asian.
Fun grab bag of Asia-related influences on U.S. pop culture.......2002-08-16
This is an enjoyable, fun survey of Asian influences on American pop culture. Some of the reviews above are a bit harsh. Take this for what it is: a grab bag of very short, engaging nuggets of pop-Asian trivia, written with an American/Canadian audience in mind, formatted in an off-beat manner (altho the layout can be a bit hard to read at times, if you sometimes have trouble reading Wired Magazine because of the fonts, backgrounds, etc, you may find the same difficulty here).
I haven't found anything else like this anywhere -- pretty much a one of a kind resource.
Pathetic Attempt to Showcase Asian Heritage.......2002-04-26
This is truly a pathetic attempt to showcase anything dealing with the Asian Heritage. I love learning about the Asian culture, but this just demeans it and enlightens no one. They shouldn't put the name of Buddah on a book to sell it. Don't bother reading this junk. If you're Asian, you'll be embarrassed. If you're non-Asian you'll laugh at the Asians.
Disappointing.......2000-05-13
This book attempts to cover culture in ALL of the countries of the "far east", and in doing so has no depth or substance on any one topic. It also has no suggestions for further reading if you are intrigued by a particular topic. A much better book along these lines is the JAPANESE POP CATALOG which does contain fascinating detail, though admittedly it "only" covers japan.
Personal agendas aside, this is a great book.......2000-01-20
I'm surprised by how personal and vicious some of the reviewers of this book got when writing... some of whom seem to have a personal beef with A. Magazine, some of whom have racial issues of their own. Can we just review the book and not our own lives? Based on the book itself, I would have to say that it's excellent--well-researched, very informative, very well-writtten. I couldn't find any other book on the market that offers this comprehensive and in-depth directory of Asian trends and phenomena. This book sold out in bookstores here in Singapore.

Customer Reviews:
Good book for an 80's fan.......2001-06-26
In many ways my husband and I miss the 80's. We liked the music, the fashion and the way people were concerned with simple things like hygiene and attractive clothing. This book took us back to those happy carefree teenage years when things were good and we were nearly completely free of responsibility!! As we went through this book we had many good laughs and had fun remembering things long forgotten! I recommend this book if you liked the 80's and I recommend reading it with at least one other person who enjoyed that era! Fun book!
Jam packed with mirthful whimsy!.......2000-05-02
This book was as much fun as a barrel of smurfs...required reading for those of us with a Dukes of Hazard lunch box and a Battlestar Galactica sleeping bag in the closet...awaken the Chachi within!
This is the Bible for any true child of the Eighties........1999-11-18
If you ignore the book's ugly-as-sin cover artwork and delve into this maniacal volume of absolutely useless yet totally vital pop cultural information, you will be proud to say: "I am a member of the Chachi Generation." Buy it and love it.
totally tubular.......1999-11-17
This book was better than 'Cats' - great trip down memory lane for any Gen X'er - makes the 80s seem rich with culture.
A must own for Generation X'ers.......1999-11-04
The book is essestial for anyone who came of age in the 1980's. Though many consider it a forgettable decade, for those of us who grew up during those years, it's great to have a refresher course on things that we considered to be so important at the time. And where else are you going to find an entry on the brilliant, yet short lived series, "Manimal?"
