Book Description
Bobbi Brown, CEO of her eponymous cosmetics company, began the trend toward natural-looking cosmetics with a simple philosophy: Women want to look and feel like themselves, only prettier and more confident. Today, top editors at elite fashion magazines including In Style, Vogue, Allure, and Harpers Bazaar revere her, and celebrities and millions of regular women throughout the world swear by her beauty advice. Now on her own 50th birthday, Bobbi Brown has written the book redefining beauty for women over 40, Bobbi Brown Living Beauty. In this refreshing look at beauty and aging, Bobbi offers readers specific makeup tricks for a stunning face, showing how makeup can solve most of the flaws that many women go under the knife to fix. In fact, the right makeup can create an even skin tone, lift the cheeks, plump a smile....even take years off any womans face. The key is to use makeup to enhance each womans best features and showcase her natural beauty. With step-by-step makeup instructions and quotes from beautiful women like Marcia Gay Harden, Vera Wang, Susan Sarandon, and Lorraine Bracco, Bobbi Browns natural, celebratory approach to aging will enlighten and inspire women everywhere.

The book arrived on schedule and the content was exactly what was anticipated based on the description.
Ageing Gracefully.......2007-08-24
I loved this book so much it will become the next birthday present for all my close female friends. It is very reassuring to have information presented specifically for 'older' women, using models who are not twenty-something, and with practical advice which does not involve expensive procedures. Thank you Bobbi Brown - this book made me feel a little less 'invisible' as a fifty-something in a country driven by youth-worship.
Good Basic Information, Nothing New or Special.......2007-07-03
I'm only 35, but I am interested in how to preserve what I have now and continue to age gracefully. I love Bobbi Brown's products and have all of her other books. I was excited to read this one, too, although it really is geared to the more mature woman. While much of her advice in this book seems to be simply regurgitated from earlier books, there is some prized information on the different ways in which to tackle aging - via products and/or procedures. Bobbi is anti-plastic surgery, which I can appreciate (but ask me again about my stance on that in 10 years!) and so has tried virtually every alternative procedure herself to combat aging, and she also pofiles other women who have had these procedures done. Interesting to read in their own words how they felt about the process, and if they were happy with the results, would do it again, etc. Included is a chapter on nutrition which I didn't really think was necessary from a make-up artist. It's all information we already know - nothing new there. But I understand that she is trying to go for the "whole" approach - not just bits and pieces. All in all, I respect her approach to beauty, she's always focused on the individual rather than the cookie-cutter look and is a smart woman. She definitely appeals to me as a woman who is aging gracefully.
good info, but not enough step by step instructions.......2007-06-24
I love the beginning section on how to remedy skin problems with and without medical procedures; she has an example of each 'problem' (ie age spots, deep wrinkles) and both medical and cosmetic solutions.
On the 'how to' apply makeup section, not enough pictures on how 'concealers' are applied. She stresses how critical this step is, but yet, there is no 'step by step' picture on how to do this correctly. Yet, the pictures of 'before ' and 'after' is incredible. I wish I knew how to ... Same with applying blush; not everyone understands where the 'apples' of our cheeks are. it's more useful to draw a shape on a picture so we know exactly where to apply that darn blush.
The rest of the book covers a lot of diffferent areas of life in general, and the tips are useful, but way too shallow, and not enough depth.
Maybe she is trying to not duplicate coverage of her earlier books...
Great.......2007-06-11

This comprehensive book explains in lucid, assured terms how to practice the fertility awareness method (FAM), a natural, scientifically proven but little-known form of birth control (which is not to be confused with the woefully ineffective "rhythm" method). Author Toni Weschler has been teaching fertility awareness for almost 20 years, and it's only just now gaining in popularity. As the book explains, by using simple fertility signs including peaks in morning body temperature and changes in cervical position and cervical mucus, it's possible to determine when ovulation is taking place. Fertility awareness is therefore useful for not only couples who are trying to conceive, but for those who are aiming to avoid pregnancy without the use of chemical contraceptives. It will be of special interest to those women who have suffered from infertility; many FAM practitioners have told the author that by filling in the detailed charts in the book, they've realized that they were chronically miscarrying, even when their doctors told them they weren't conceiving at all. As the book explains, by charting body temperature, it's simple to tell when pregnancy has occurred--and when there's danger of miscarriage. Taking Charge of Your Fertility also explains how to choose the sex of your baby by timing intercourse according to certain fertility signs. It also features thorough, easy-to-understand explanations of hormones, the menstrual cycle, and menopause, along with fertility tests and treatments and their long- and short-term side effects, plus a topnotch resource section. Recommended for any woman who wants to better understand her body. --Erica Jorgensen

Thanks to this book I have my baby!.......2007-10-05
This book is wonderful - it's very simple and easy to follow with lots of example to illustrate more complicated concepts.
I have so called "lazy ovaries" and only menstruate around 4-5 times a year. With a better understanding of how my body works and how to know the best time to conceive, we bingo'd on our first try to have a baby. Enough said!
A little work brings big rewards.......2007-10-04
This is a well written book that makes understanding your hormones and fertility logical and reasonable. I bought this book on a recomendation from my Sister In-Law and I am so glad I did. Side effects of birth control pills can be hard on a woman's body both physically and mentally. This book provides lots of information for understanding the ins and outs of fertility. I have used it succesfully in both avoiding and achieving pregnancy.
Everything you never knew you wanted to know..........2007-10-04
This book is not JUST about babies and getting pregnant! In fact, I think a more appropriate title for this book might be something like "Taking Charge of Your Reproductive Health." Before a friend recommended TCOYF, I would have passed right by it without a second glance in the bookstore. The "fertility" thing in the title would have made me think it was only for people who wanted to become pregnant, which would have rendered it useless to me. This publication is FAR more than that, though! This a great book for women who want to become pregnant, those who don't, and those who just want to learn more about their bodies and their cycles. My friend recommended this book to me after she had her first child. (Imagine that!) She said the book taught her more about her own body than she ever thought she needed to know and she was infinitely grateful. She was right on! You will learn amazing things about your body and you may just be inclined to start paying attention to changes and things you never noticed before. This book demystifies a lot of what females go through due to normal, regular bodily functions on a regular basis -- and it does so using plain English, clear examples, and some charming anecdotal passages. Buy it. Chart for a month and see if YOU'RE not hooked!
Terrific book.......2007-10-02
This book is great. I would recommend it to anyone thinking about getting pregnant or anyone needing information about the reproductive cycle.
Taking Charge.......2007-09-30
This book was recommended to me by a few friends who use it already. It is extremely informative and helpful, and explains a lot of things that I would never have thought could impact fertility.

The Best and Only Nursing Book You Need.......2007-10-01
Super informative, easy to understand, great resource section. I have 1 other book--the AAP book--and it is not 1/2 as good. Great layout, natural order of progression. And best of all, no hidden agenda, or platform to proselytize from. I read it over and over again, nearly wore it out, used every inch of every page of it. You cannot go wrong buying this book. It's like having a lactation consultant 24x7. Buy it! :-)
Great breastfeeding book-one of the best!!.......2007-09-04
Are you a new mom? Do you desire to breastfeed your baby but find yourself lost? Are you a seasoned mom who has breastfed before? This book has something to offer for every type of parent! I found it invaluable while I nursed my son. Especially for those parents who do not have a readily accessible lactation consultant or La Leche League group in your area. Best book to add to your parenting library!
Great Book For First Time Moms!.......2007-08-15
I purchased this book just a few days prior to having my baby, and was so happy that I had my copy with me at the hospital. It has been a great reference from day 1. I took a breastfeeding class at our hospital, but they did not address the challenges of breastfeeding at all. I was not prepared, and thank goodness I had this book handy to help me through engorgement, latching, pumping and storing. I highly recommend it to any mother who is even thinking about breastfeeding.
Invaluable living overseas.......2007-08-06
I don't write reviews often, but I had to for this book because of the help and comfort it has given me.
My husband and I are living overseas in Germany. We speak the language but not to such a specific extent which makes problem dr. visits more challenging for us. This book has been my saving grace. It helped us with many things from getting off to a good start with the latch, how to keep baby awake to feed, medicines ok to take during nursing, breast infections (I've had 3), sore nipples (now that baby is teething), all the way to starting solids. I wouldn't feel so comfortable in my nursing practices living over here without it.
There is a great deal more to breastfeeding than I ever thought and this book addresses it all. I brought it with us to the hospital and I'm still referring to it today - baby girl is 6 months already. I can't say enough about this book.
Great Reference.......2007-07-26
This book contains comprehensive, solid information to help you become a successful nursing mother. I recommend buying this while you are pregnant to read up on what to expect and plan for those early weeks and beyond. I still use it for reference if I have a question.
We are still nursing at 11months and plan to continue for a little while longer.
So That's What They're For is also a great nursing book if you are looking for something that is a little more casual in tone.
Above all, I think a determination to succeed and confidence that you are giving your baby the best start in life are what helps the most.

It's not all about the jeans; flattening the tummy helps fight "Toxic Fat"--the disease-inducing weight Dr. Pamela Peeke teaches women how to conquer in Body-for-LIFE for Women. Her firm belief is, most women already know what they're supposed to do: eat a balanced diet, ditch junk food, exercise, think positively. Peeke strives to show her "girlfriends" how to accomplish these tasks, customizing plans for young and old. Clients' stories (including a 95-year-old who worked herself out of a wheelchair and into a martial arts class, and a 14-year old who replaced 90 lbs. of fat with a healthy load of self-confidence) lend credence to Peeke's 12-week weight reduction plan; so do the wowsie before-and-after pictures. Gender-specific scientific evidence supports Peeke's premise that women's bodies require different care than men's. But she doesn't stop there.
Amazon.com Interview
Read our interview with Pam Peeke. | |
Peeke digs deeper for her audience, defining four hormonal milestones of a woman's life (menarche to beyond menopause) and customizing a physical and mental transformation plan to suit each. Easing off on strict calorie and weight guidelines, she focuses instead on serious fat reduction, muscle improvement, and practical suggestions for self-care. A handful of charts and formulae help readers assess their progress; sample exercises and fitness logs help, too. But for Peeke, weight reduction pales to bolstering a woman's self-worth through nurturing healthier habits. The only rough pill to swallow is Peeke's two-page list of smart foods: it lacks suggestions for turning acceptable proteins, carbohydrates and fats into palatable daily meals.--Liane Thomas

It works.......2007-08-14
Diets are boring; working out is worse. Then you find you have to do something because your doctor is on your case. This plan actually works. I was introduced to it by a trainer at a gym and I have not just my own progress to monitor but also a bunch of other over-the-hill types in the same boat as me. We're stronger, slimmer, and walk proud. It gives step by step instructions on weight lifting how-tos, power bars, the usual what-to-eat/what-not-to-eat, multi-vitamins - absolutely everything. Besides being a good read, it motivates the reader into action.
Original BFL is Better.......2007-08-08
I like the original BFL book- this one has too much unneeded information, plus it is not very clear on the actual plan!
The Original is Better........2007-07-12
Having long been a fan of Bill Phillips and devotee of Body For Life, I was intrigued by the idea of Body For Life For Women and bought a copy as a gift for my wife. Day One: I received the book in the mail. Day Two: My wife and I each read the book and discussed it. Day Three: I returned the book by mail. Why? Two reasons. First, the material about the four phases of a woman's life, although interesting, was quite useless to her exercise and nutrition program, and the rest of the material didn't offer more than that found in the original Body For Life. Second, we found the book not as well organized, presented, and illustrated as the original and it included many unnecessary charts and tables. Simply put, my wife decided she will stick with the Phillips original because it's complete and so much better.
Seriously?.......2007-07-10
Are you kidding me? Let me start by saying that I have not read the entire book- but I don't need to!! Ladies- don't sell yourself short...why would you NOT follow the original BFL plan? Eat clean and balanced, train hard, believe in yourself...it's that simple. The very IDEA of "BFL book for women" suggests that women cannot/will not succeed with the original plan....ridiculous. Get Bill Phillips book instead and go get 'em girl!!
Negative Subliminal Messages... beware.......2007-07-07
Why bother with this when you can get the real meat of the program in Bill Phillip's Body For Life minus the negative subliminal messages?
Something I notice with women authors, ESPECIALLY when they write about women's health.. is they tend to predetermine what you will experience at what age.. ie, power of suggestion like "when you are past 40, your body won't digest as well as it did before" "When you get older, your bones start to become brittle" "When you get past 40 you tend to not have as much energy" YES.. she actually says this in her book!!!
PLEASE!!! Woman.. why are you trying to reiterate the negative media about women and their health?
AND....what really makes me mad is that she's using the good name of Body for Life to promote these subliminal messages!! You don't find any of that mess in the BFL book.
I, myself, am over 40 and I have experienced none of what she said I "should be" experiencing.. my energy level, health, physical and mental stamina are all there just as much as they were when I was 20... I never expected them not to be. If you start believing these messages you will start to give up.. because you think you're "supposed to at this age". In the long run, it's all up to you what you decide to believe and experience and what suggestions you let into your mind. Whether it is intentional or unintentional, beware of bad messages wrapped up in a "positive" looking package.
Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Menopause doesn't have to be a dreaded curse of aging during which we can look forward only to hot flashes and whacked-out hormonal mood swings. According to Christiane Northrup, M.D. (Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom), menopause often marks the beginning of a woman's most sexually passionate, creatively inspired, and professionally productive phase of life.
While this may sound like wishful thinking, Northrup backs up her good news with solid medical expertise. As an obstetrician and gynecologist, Northrup has specialized in using a mind-body approach to women's health for decades, which means she doesn't just write about hormones, but also examines how a woman's lifestyle, emotions, and beliefs are affected by menopause. With the right diet, attitude, and perhaps some supplements along the way, women can actually look forward to a resurgence of energy and a revolutionary opportunity for personal growth--one that rivals the hormonally driven period of adolescence in its scope and urgency, she claims. And yes, at just under 500 pages, The Wisdom of Menopause does explain how to have a positive and healthy menopause in concise detail. Northrup has indeed "written the book" on menopause.
It helps that Northrup has been through menopause herself (she vowed she wouldn't write a book on it until she was on the other side). Readers have the sense that they are gleaning advice from a knowledgeable holistic doctor as well as a sage aunt whose life was radically altered by the "change of life" (Northrup divorced at the onset of menopause). After she shares her personal story of "the change," Northrup delves into a significant discussion on how self-sacrifice catches up with women in midlife. Suddenly, hormones are directing women out of the caregiver role and into an inwardly focused assessment of life and its meaning, she explains. Resentments (not hormones) are what spur the notorious surges of anger, as women reexamine the agreements surrounding their relationships with colleagues, friends, and family members.
From here, Northrup guides readers into a thorough section on menopausal hormone changes--a discussion that is scientifically informative, yet entirely accessible. While acknowledging the need for hormone-replacement therapy and the tremendous relief it can provide (helping to alleviate insomnia, hot flashes, and depression), Northrup encourages women to avoid synthetic hormones and instead consider "bioidentical" hormones (such as estradiol, estrone, and estriol). She also devotes an entire chapter to foods and supplements that support hormonal balance. By the way, she says to skip the wild Mexican yam creams: "they certainly don't provide the documented benefits of progesterone." Be warned: some readers may find the advice in Wisdom of Menopause too alternative for their liking. For example, in her discussion on insomnia, one of Northrup's recommendations is to cover the mirror at night, following the ancient Asian design principles of feng shui. (Skeptics will find Northrup's medical assertions carefully cited and footnoted in the rear of her book.)
Northrup gives a solid and practical diet plan that supports hormonal balance while countering the weight gain that so frequently plagues menopausal women ("focus on portion size, not calories," "eat protein at every meal," and cut down on refined and high-carbohydrate foods). Readers can also expect a thorough mind-body discussion in subsequent chapters that cover breast health, bone loss, and cultivating midlife beauty, along with chapters titled "Sex and Menopause: Myths and Reality" and "Creating Pelvic Health and Power."
She concludes with a list of mail-order and online resources, such as retailers for bioidentical hormones, progesterone cream, Chinese herbs, soy products, weight-loss audiocassettes, lubricants, and Kegel weights. Northrup takes a truly comprehensive approach to all the effective treatments of menopausal symptoms so that women can make their own highly informed and wise choices. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
Through her bestselling books, groundbreaking PBS specials, and up-to-the-minute clinical knowledge, Dr. Christiane Northrup has earned a place as one of America’s most trusted medical advisors.
In
The Wisdom of Menopause, she once again challenges convention with this inspiring look at one of the most commonly misunderstood female health issues. The “change” is not simply a collection of physical symptoms to be “fixed,” Dr. Northrup claims, but a mind/body revolution that brings the greatest opportunity for growth since adolescence. The choices a woman makes now–from the quality of her relationships to the quality of her diet–have the power to secure her health and well-being for the rest of her life. Through her personal story and many fascinating case histories, Dr. Northrup shows:
• How menopause jump-starts changes in the brain, issuing a dramatic wake-up call to body, mind, and emotions
• How to ensure the long-term health of breasts, bones, and heart
• How the body adjusts naturally to changing hormones
• Why bestselling drugs like Premarin may not be the best choice
• How to deal with metabolism shifts, weight gain, sexual problems, and appearance issues
• How to negotiate the challenges of “the empty nest” and midlife marriage
And much more.
In a book destined to be a classic, Dr. Northrup shows women how they can make menopause a time of personal empowerment and positive energy–emerging wiser, healthier, and stronger in both mind and body than ever before.
Customer Reviews:
Great BOOK, would recommend it to everyone.......2007-09-19
I wish I had read this book years sooner. It has given me more insight to being a female than ever. I use it as a resource and recommend it to many women friends and family. I could have been saved a great deal of heart ache had I had it sooner.
Enlightening.......2007-09-15
I have only read the first 100 pages of this 600 page book, but I am finding the information to be very enlightening. At times, I feel as if I am reading my own life. I am in the perimenopause stage, and the way the author relays the changing of her thinking process, and correlates that with the hormonal changes occurring in her body, has really helped me understand the phase of life that I have entered and why I am making so many life changes. I thought I had just made up my mind about some things, but I am beginning to understand that it is really coming from the inside out. This book was recommended to me right on time. I am only 46 and I probably would not have purchased a book on menopause, if it had not been recommended. Any woman, approaching this change, should read this book, because I believe it will help you embrace the change, instead of fear it. I always had a negative impression of the emotions that would emerge, based on negative information that is usually forthcoming, but this is helping me to move forward taking advantage of the natural changes that are occurring. Perhaps I will write my own story, about how this book changed my life. Don't get overwhelmed by the size of the book, it is filled with life changing information that can be digested nugget by nugget.
A must read for Women.......2007-08-13
This insightful book adds clearity to wherever you are in the menopause chapter of your your life. I bought two and sent one to a friend. She called me and said it sounded like the author was writing about her at times.
The Wisdom of Menopause.......2007-08-13
I found it brilliant and informative. It answered all the questions I want to know, this book will most definitely be moved around amongst my friends and family should the need arise for information regarding menopause. My husband found it interesting as well and have more understanding.
The Wisdom of Menopause: Creating Physical and Emotional Health and Healing During the Change.......2007-08-06
This is a great anthology on menopause. It is well-written and documented, plus it includes numerous resources. Every woman should have a copy in her library!
Book Description
This is not another one–size fits all program with strict rules and baffling instructions. One of the leading voices for holistic living, Mariel Hemingway's Healthy Living from the Inside Out is an accessible, down–to–earth guide that shows us what our bodies and minds truly need and how to make the best decisions for our daily lives. Dividing the program into four foundational areas, we can isolate the issues we all face and start making the necessary changes.
Food: What we eat and drink affects every part of our lives, from our energy level to our body shape. First by distinguishing what foods make us feel and act our best, we can then learn how to integrate a flavorful yet super nutritious diet into of our regular life.
Exercise: Exercise not just to stay in shape but to stay connected to ourselves. By putting the emphasis on quality not quantity, we learn to nurture ourselves, stay grounded, and transform our mental, emotional, and physical state a little bit each day.
Home: Too often where we live echoes the clutter and chaos of the outside world. Learn how to make our homes a place where we can rest, recharge, and refocus, a haven for the balanced life we (and our families) seek.
Silence: In our super noisy world, bringing quiet reflection into our lives slows down the rush, helps us learn the empowering skill of observation, and ultimately can guide us into healthier habits and behaviors.

Useful Guide to Healthy Living.......2007-09-16
I enjoyed this book so much, I bought it for my friends as gifts and they've all really loved it. Being in my early forties with children, it is nice to have a book that helps you slow down and live a more peaceful and healthy lifestyle.
Great Book.......2007-07-25
This book is a wonderful book to read, talks about the women body and living healthy. I own RC Duct Cleaning an Air Duct Cleaning Company and I am always concerned with my health as well as that of people around me so I would definately recommend this book.
Healthy Living: Stop and Tune In to YOU.......2007-06-09
I recently had Mariel on my LifeBites Radio show. This book is a great reminder that all of us need to slow down and look inside. I think she does a great job of breaking it down into four areas - Eating, Exercise, Being Quiet and Home Environment. All of these areas affect how you live your life. I also appreciated her ability to be candid about her struggles in life. She doesn't claim to have all the answers, but inspires you to look inside.
Disappointed.......2007-05-28
I purchased this item and sent 2 as gifts after seeing Mariel on television talking about the book. It was not what I thought, filled with buddha images. Being a Christian it was sent to Christians with no knowledge these were in the book.
Healthy Tips.......2007-05-18
I picked up this book because I read a number of good reviews here and was intrigued. There are some good tips here undeniably but I was bored reading this book. Many of these things I've heard or read before. One of the bigger turn offs for me was her "candor" about her obsessiveness whether with food or exercise. I'm sorry I couldn't really get into this book.

Encompassing the entire scope of the practice of midwifery, this new edition has been extensively revised and updated to reflect the full scope of current midwifery practice.
Customer Reviews:
Varney's Midwifery text.......2007-09-29
Excellent book for nursing and midwifery students. Any midwifery practitioner would do well to always have the latest copy in their reference library.
A must read.......2003-11-21
I have always found Varney to be useful and easy to read, especially in comparison to Speroff or Gabbe. I think that this book was never intended to be the definitive text on home birth. If a midwife's interest lies in homebirth, seek out books that cater to that option. I found the skills sections especially helpful. It isn't Varney's job to unite midwives, her primary job is to educate. You can not teach the spirit of midwife through a book, that's where mentoring comes into play. This is certainly a must have for all practicing midwives, regardless of educational background.
Technically accurate, boring read.......2002-11-06
I am impressed by Varney's vast knowledge of hospital procedures as they relate to midwifery care. However, I found this to be "textbook" as a very boring read. Her information did not really cover the practice outside the hospital setting as thoroughly as would be needed for someone praticing in that setting. Her information would be most appreciated by the CNM and the L&D nurse - a great resource for them.
This is a good reference book, but not the best for homebirt.......2001-06-15
This book is a good reference book, but not the best one for homebirth midwives. Myle's, and Anne' Frye's books I have found to be more applicable in my practice. To the above person that thinks that Circumsision should not be addresses, I could not disagree more. Circumsision is a subject that should be addressed prenatally, and Since midwives are supposed to provide basic Post-partum care to the mother and baby during the first six weeks It is essentual that midwives and parents are educated about the issue antapartum
Not for those looking for Home Birth information!.......2000-05-26
This book does no service to the Home Birth community. If you are looking for information on all facets of birth in a MEDICAL setting, then this book would be for you. Home birth facilitators would never recommend some of the practices in this book. (The Zanelli technique, for instance. Which is when you have a baby that's head has delivered but the shoulders are stuck, and it shows you how to push the baby back inside the womb.Or as already mentioned, Circumcision.) This book would be useful for those birth facilitators that intend to practice exclusively in a hospital setting.
Book Description
The companion book to Ian Kerner's smash success She Comes First, He Comes Next offers women his sometimes radical, always expert advice on everything from the nature of male desire to sex-techniques that work
While women everywhere benefited from Ian Kerner's sexual philosophy of female pleasure in She Comes First, now it's time to learn all about what turns men on and makes them stay on. In He Comes Next, Kerner covers every angle of male sexuality, illuminates the most common sex-life ruts, and offers practical, knowledgeable answers to women's most frequently asked questions. In his role as a sex therapist, Kerner has spoken with countless men not only about the best sex they ever had, but also perhaps more important about the best sex they never had -- experiences they always desired and fantasized about, but were afraid to share with their partners. In the spirit of "full exposure," He Comes Next is the closest you'll ever come to waking up in a guy's skin and knowing what truly makes him sexually tick.
Sexual pleasure goes beyond tips and tactics, however. Our sexual identities -- and the expression, gratification, and growth of these identities -- is fundamental to the success of our intimate relationships. With step-by-step and -- yes -- blow-by-blow detail, Kerner provides a clear, concise, achievable vision of sexual pleasure, one in which each technique forwards the action and where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
Written in the same witty, insightful, and utterly readable voice that has made She Comes First and Be Honest -- You're Not That Into Him Either so popular, He Comes Next is the thinking woman's guide to enjoying sex to the fullest and ensuring that he does the same.

Best Book Ever!!!!.......2007-09-12
This book isn't so much about the mechanics of sex as the nature of love and desire in a monogamous relationship. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of great factual information about sex, but speaking as a woman, I have always been more curious about the deeper and more substantial mystery of love. This book really delves into that mystery and supplies a lot of expert relationship advice arising from the physical realities of the human body. For example, cuddling releases a hormone called oxcytocin in females and massage releases the hormone vassopressin in men. These hormones encourage feelings of closeness, fidelity and nesting in humans. Spending time massaging your guy actually helps build your relationship, and demanding that he spend time with his arm or leg over you will make you feel more appreciated. Even if you already knew this great little fact, you should still read this book because there are more of these cool tidbits and the book espouses a powerful new way for women to look at sex. Before I read this book, I was caught in a traditional outlook on female sexuality. I thought that sex just wasn't very fun for me and it wasn't really supposed to be fun for me. I had tried other books, but found that the "techniques" they suggested led to some embarrassing situations. I had asked my gynecologist if their was something wrong with me that made sex just no fun. I thought that porn was a necessary evil and didn't really understand why guys spend any time at all watching the stuff. After reading this book, I can truly say that I get why my guy seems to be the way he is. I have implemented some of the suggestions, and man alive, my sex life has been soooo much better. This is my first online review of a book and it is because I just had to come and gush about this book.
I got this book and "She Comes First" 15 days ago as my anniversary gift to my boyfriend and me. He has been too busy with work to read "She Comes First", so I started reading "He comes next." Just this book has been truly great for our relationship. The cover is very suggestive and one of the best parts of the book. While he is walking around the apartment, I will lounge on the chair reading. I have caught him staring at me a bunch. I know it turns him on to see me reading a book about how to turn him on. Further, the book is a page turner. I come home and the first thing I want to do is pick it up and read. I have to hold myself back to wait for my boyfriend to be around. Having read this book, I want to give it to my friend as a wedding present. This book is worth its weight in diamonds.
A great learning experience.......2007-08-17
I read She Comes First by the same author before I read this one which was just as educational for me as it is for a man. That being said, He Comes Next was quite a learning experience! While I am good at "it", there's always room for improvement in whatever you're doing and reading this book cemented that belief. It helped me understand how a man thinks and why and how he feels (not so different from us ladies) about sensitive issues. I expected the book to be primarily about learning to give a better oral sex like She Comes First is, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was much more to it than that. I did, however, appreciate the education I got about oral sex. I certainly hope to satisfy my partner better now-emotionally and physically.
A great big O.......2007-07-01
I'd give this book a big O for outstanding. This book goes beyond just serving as a how-to on having great sex, but first and foremost provides a how-to on having a great relationship. (And, believe it or not, the two really are connected.) Continually entertaining, informative, and insightful from cover to cover, this book will likely suck (ok, puns are hard to avoid in writing this review) you in from the start and keep your attention throughout. As the author conveys throughout the book, the secret to having an exciting relationship in the bedroom is to first have an exciting one outside of it
WOW! This is an Amazing Book!.......2007-05-13
I picked this book up on a whim and read it cover to cover without putting it down. The author truly "has a handle" on how to please a man. He is straightforward and provides easy to understand instruction. I would recommend this book to anyone. I was amazed at what I learned and just applying a few of the techniques in this book will maximize your and your partner's experience.
Always learning.......2007-05-13
I think any man will appreciate a woman reading this book-it's written intelligently and I believe will truly enhance the male sexual experience when employed by women (and in turn, the men will reciprocate!)

Younger Next Year is clear. Our bodies are programmed to do one of two things: either grow or decay. Sitting in front of a screen all day tells the body to decay. Taking a walk or doing yoga tells the body to grow. Loneliness and stress trigger decay; love and laughter trigger growth.

#1 Exercise six days a week for the rest of your life, to #6 Care, to #7 Connect and commit.

They’re called Harry’s Rules, named for the doctor and coauthor—Henry S. Lodge, M.D.—who formulated them, and who explains the precise science behind each one. But since it’s one thing to know something’s good for you and quite another to put it into practice, Dr. Lodge, the scientist, is joined by Chris Crowley—coauthor, exhorter and living example—whose brusque charm and infectious enthusiasm will actually have you living by the rules. So, congratulations. You’re now about to get younger.

Younger Next Year for Women.......2007-09-28
Excellent arguments for doing all the right things you know you should do. Different approach in understanding how we age. Very comprehensive coverage of things we need to know. Down to earth, doable steps we can take to add healthier years to our lives. (Mrs. J. T.)
Encouraging book!!.......2007-09-28
This book gives advice and encouragement to women who have falsely come to believe that deterioration comes with age and there is nothing we can do about it. I truly enjoyed it and recommend it, but still want to make the following comments: it belabored the value of exercise to the point where I felt like shouting "OK, I get it, I get...we need to exercise!". In a way, I kept waiting for the book to also talk about OTHER things too, but really this was the total focus of the book. I also thought that it would have been nice if the authors included some women doctors' perspectives too (it was weird getting all that advice on how we women should live our lives from two men). And lastly, I felt that the recommendation (strongly and repeatedly given) to exercise for HOURS a day, every day preferably, was fine for the retired author of the book who, as another reviewer also mentioned, was spending ALOT of time doing things that are not easily affordable by the average woman, nevermind the huge amount of vacation/play time he had to enjoy that high-end exercise, like biking trips and skiing trips...not realistic for the kinds of lives most women, age 50-60 at least, really live in today's world (lives filled with the time demands of jobs combined with children, homes, elderly parents, grandchildren, etc.). It may be that this much exercise is what is really needed to turn back the clock, but I'm hoping that's not true- since so few of us have THAT much time to devote to exercise (the authors seemed to think that if you had your priorities straight, you'd find the time). In summary, however, the authors did convince me that I need to add strength training to my cardio training, so all-in-all, I felt it was worth reading this book and I do recommend!
I enjoyed every minute of it!.......2007-09-09
This book will make you look younger! Another bestseller that I love and highly recommend - How to be a Super Hot Woman: 339 Tips to Make Every Man Fall in Love with You and Every Woman Envy You
Great Book!!.......2007-09-07
This book is great reading! It's easy and entertaining. It offers excellent insights into our aging process and how to be healthy as we age. Each time I finish reading, I feel motivated to get out, exercise and get healthy!!
Irreverant and relevant.......2007-09-06
This book was recommended by one of the smart women I am lucky enough to have in my life. Thank you Elizabeth, it is a very important piece of work.
"I have to warn you," she counseled, "what this book advises, and backs up with sound science, may bring out the rebellious teen in you. Once I got over thinking it was preposterous I see that it is working", she laughed.
My skeptical, rebel child did blanche at times as I read chapter after chapter about the hard work and science of avoiding Depends and a walker. But avoid those I will and after only 3 chapters I can actually say "thanks Henry" for the five miles I power-walked today rather than the three I intended to.
Henry is Henry S. Lodge, M. D. one of the two authors. The other is Chris Crowley. Together they published the original version of this concept for men.
Their message is compelling.
* The brain reacts in response to what we tell it by our lifestyle choices.
* The response process was designed billions of years ago when we lived in nature and survival was the order of the day. The fittest survived, the weakest, well you know.
* Our body and brains are perfect for their natural purposes hunting, gathering, running, shivering, but none of them was designed for modern life: fast food, TV, temperature controlled environments, or retirement.
* We are programmed this way like it or not and it remains the way our brains' process input. We can either take on the decay prevention program outlined here, to make the most of the inevitable aging process, or we can age and rot.
Some of the facts are scary:
* Being sedentary is the single most important signal for decay.
Some heartening:
* The good news is that decay signals, brought about by the modern lifestyle we enjoy, though constant, are weak. If you don't send any signals to grow, decay will win, but even a modest signal to grow--a decent workout--even a good, stiff walk--will drown out the noise.
I won't bore you with the neuro-bio-science-geek stuff that I love to read but here is their message in a nutshell.
You've got to Move It Move It!
Move physically,
move towards joy and happiness daily,
and move towards those in your life whom you feel connected to and safe with.
It seems that the pack mentality from years gone by is also a part of the survival mechanism our bodies crave.
Here's a brief explanation of this writerly duo. The doctor has a twenty-four person internal medicine practice in NYC. He is rated as one of the best doctors in the country. At about the 10-year mark of practicing Dr. Lodge
realized the following: that being an internist allows him a long relationship with patients; like for 20, 30 years or more. From this he deduced, "I am `on notice' of how my patients are living, and of how they are dying. I am `on notice' that the normal American way of life--and especially the American way of aging--is dangerous and sometimes lethal."
Lodge goes on to say what most of us have heard at least once, "Some 70% of premature death and aging is lifestyle-related...If we had the will to do it, we could eliminate more than half of all disease in women and men over fifty. Not delay it, eliminate it." I think that statement is worth re-reading at least once.
The co-author, Crowley is a former litigator. He is 71 or so and Dr. Lodge's patient. He's the proof this stuff works. Here's what he says about his part:
"Mine is the report from the front. Optimistic, sure, but honest and unadorned. Not a woman's report but almost as relevant because, as I say, we're in the Aging Boat together. Unless we do some stuff that I happen to know about."
He goes on to say, " I am an indifferent athlete at best. I am hugely self-indulgent (at one point I was forty pounds overweight). I drink almost every day, and I am hardwired for pleasure." So he's one of us.
More from Chris,
"And again, 70 percent of the "normal" decay (that's the rot) associated with aging...the weakness, the sore joints, the lousy balance, the feeling crappy...70 percent of that horror can be forestalled almost until the end."
And I say Amen to that.
The book is thick, 357 pages without the appendix. It's an easy read though and what I really like about it--keep in mind the reference I made to being a science geek--is the amount of science behind each of the exhortations to move, eat this or not that, connect, etc.
The first section of the book covers every aspect of our physical bodies as we do the inevitable dance towards the grand finale. Behind the scenes science sets one up for "getting" this stuff and the very plain stated "what to do" about it will at least get you thinking about available options and outcomes.
Section two is titled "The Limbic Brain and the Biology of Emotion" and covers the importance of caring enough for self and others to want to take this challenge on. It's the social side of the coin of our physical existence.
You don't have to become a tri-athlete over night. At the least you owe yourself a once over to see what part you are playing in how well you age or how fast you go downhill. I'll leave you with this from Dr. Henry:
"Being sedentary is formally classified as a major cardiovascular risk factor, increasing risk more than smoking or high cholesterol. Vigorous exercise, the real thing, is the most powerful way we know of cutting down your risk of heart attack."

Body Clutter.......2007-09-25
I am reading this book now, and intend to use it to lose weight. I am very happy with the book.
Take care of yourself!.......2007-09-25
This book stresses the importance of taking care of yourself just as you take care of yourself. What a perfect idea! Marla asks why we take care of ourselves only when we're pregnant or nursing. That's a good question. I think this book will open alot of inner dialog for it's readers and initiate some soul searching. I am in the process of reading it again.
Some things in this book did not seem to fit. For instance, the Author berating a lady who wrote the Flylady website. This woman simply asked Mrs. Cilley to consider changing the Flylady Icon to one with a healthier figure. It was just an idea (I don't agree either) and I didn't think it warranted the response that is in this book. I don't think this book was the right place for blasting a well meaning critic. Maybe she'll zap me in her next book!
Don't spend your precious time or money on this book. .......2007-09-13
There is nothing profound in this book. The book is composed of basic information that most [informed] women already know about themselves and their weight related struggles.
Unimpressive writing/editing as well. I was hoping for more.
So-so book.......2007-08-09
I was disappointed not to find revelations in the book like I have found in reading Feng Shui books about material clutter. The style was a little too clever, although the intention was sincere. I found myself not understanding some of the jargon that was repeatedly and overly used.
Terrible!.......2007-06-15
I'm not normally one to go online and post a bad review, but I was so thoroughly disappointed by this book that I felt I had to do something about it. Not only is it terribly written, but there's no true insight or mental depth to the book. The author's style of writing is just as haphazard and messy as one of the rooms in her house. I do not recommend wasting your money on this book. The most the book does is provide someone with a little bit of comfort to know that there are other messy, overweight people out there. But alas, it doesn't provide any fundamental insights on changing poor eating habits or increasing exercise.
