Book Description
Understanding the Golf Swing will show you a different, simpler approach to the golf swing. Manuel de la Torre, twice named by Golf Magazine as one of the top 100 golf instructors in America is the leading modern day proponent of Ernest Jones' Swing Principles method of golf instruction. The book includes a passionate Foreword by Carol Mann, Member LPGA, Hall of Fame.
The de la Torre (and Jones) system presents a simpler approach to the golf swing, the emphasis being on the development of a true swinging motion, devoid of energy robbing leverage. In this view, if the club is used properly the body movements take care of themselves. This simple statement has the power to bring aobut profound improvements in your game.
While presenting a simpler approach to the golf swing, the book is also a comprehensive resource for all levels of golfer, from the beginner to the professional. It includes:
The most thorough analysis of ball flights found in any golf instructional book.
Detailed discussion of special shot play, including sand play, pitching, chipping, putting, and playing unusual shots.
Coverage of the mental site of golf, effective course management, and a formula for taking your best practice tee shots to the golf course.

Not the Perfect Golf Book, But...........2007-08-17
Pretty Close. If you want hardcore mechanics (and a lifetime of frustration) go elsewhere. If you want to learn how to swing, keep it simple and play better golf, I recommend this book. Read these books, in this order, and you'll have captured the essence of building a swing:
1) Swing the Clubhead - Ernest Jones
2) Understanding the Golf Swing - de la Torre
3) Practical Golf - John Jacobs
People will say Hogan's "Five Lessons". Do you really believe Hogan learned to swing the way he taught his "secret" anto-hook swing? Nah, he swung the clubhead and knocked balls over the hedges in his neighborhood.
I love Hogan and have studied his book, only to realize that I am not Ben Hogan. Neither are you.
In addition to the above, my favorite read is "Bobby Jones on Golf". It has good information where my hero Jones even cautions about trying to learn a particular shot or swing from a written description of mechanics. More than anything else, the master teaches us to fight down tension and swing, swing, swing the clubhead!
I do not feel that I need another golf book in my library or another mechanical thought in my head. How are you doin'?
Hope this book and this review saves you from the years of torture that I endured.
Got the DVD too.......2007-01-09
My sister was given this one....she just started to play golf. Got her the DVD too but she says she took the book with her on the plane when she had that business trip and it was a Great read!
Great for Lefties.......2006-09-29
I am lefthanded, and I also golf lefthanded. As any leftie golfer will tell you, reading golf instructions books and articles is a challenge, since they are typically written with a "right" oriented golfer in mind. Mr. La Torre was courteous enough to insert comments for us lefties, so as to make it easier to follow.
As to the content, I have amassed quite a collection of golf books, determined to find a repeatable swing that will generate the maximum power with the least amount of stress on my low back. After reading this book [the second time through!]I began swinging with the deliberate intention of finishing in a balanced follow-through position, concentrating on not accelerating on my downswing or trying to control or direct my weight shift. It was without a doubt the best ball-striking of the summer! And on the occasional miss-hits I was able to understand better what I did, and how I deviated from the teachings of Mr. La Torre. It's interesting that the solution he lists for the majority of our most common swing faults is to focus on swinging the club with our arms [defined in the book as "from shoulder to elbow"] rather than with any other body parts. What happens when you do this is that the body responds naturally to what the arms are doing. The hardest part is just allowing yourself to try to swing like this, and not falling back into your old habits.
I highly recommend this book to any insanely addicted golfer who is convinced he or she has a better swing locked inside of themselves.
Not Really Ernest.......2006-06-09
Mr. De La Torre claims to teach the Ernest Jones method (which produced numerous national champions on both sides of the Atlantic) but then pollutes the Jones method by taking the hands out of the downswing. After unsuccesfully trying Manuel's method for a while, I happened upon Arnie Frankel's Golf's One Motion video. It is a much more straight forward presentation of the Jones method. Understanding the Golf Swing misses the mark.
Not what I expected ...either.......2006-03-15
I agree with the previous reviewer that what De La Torre teaches isn't really close to what Ernest Jones prescribes. Not that it's a bad book - it's just that I bought it in hopes of elaborating on the Swing the Clubhead concept - which it just briefly touches upon.
Maybe I should start reading the reviews "before" I buy the books.
Book Description
On the surface, choosing the correct propeller for a particular boat seems simple. But one factor affects another, which then affects another factor, leading many boaters to believe that propeller selection depends more on black magic than logic.
All the questions are answered in this complete reference, the first of its kind. This clear, easy-to-use handbook for all small boats is written not for Ph.D.s seeking the latest wrinkle in high-tech propeller design, but as a practical aid for the average mechanic, engineer, boatbuilder, fleet operator, serious yachtsman, or naval architect.

The Propeller Handbook.......2007-09-20
This is a very practical book in terms of its simple way of guiding the reader through both, the conceptual understanding of propellers and the corresponding calculations.
This book fulfilled all my expectations
A must read book.......2006-05-04
It is for the technically minded. Don't buy a propeller without reading it first. And after you've read it, you will probably buy a new propeller, because you will likely to find out that the old one is not right.
Very technical and interesting.......2006-03-21
This is a very interesting book. It goes deeply in the theme.
It is necessary to have engineering or technical background to understand it, not recommended for not technical minds.
There is one or two false aseverations, but if you are a technician or engineer, you will realize that immediately and in addition those aseverations have not consecuences for the main theme.
Boat Propellers .......2006-03-10
This book will answer almost every propellers related but needs little update for todays raceboats props..
Super prop book for the serious boater........2003-09-04
The author has boiled out all the complicated Bessel functions and the reader is left with the bottom line for basic propeller selection. If you are serious boater interested in propellers this is the book for you...you don't need to PhD in Naval Arch to understand this. Very straight forward approach. If you have prop related or powering questions, buy this. For 13 bucks you are going to spend more on gas your next outing due to your poor prop.
I would have given it 5 stars if the pictures were in color and more recent.

not for everyone ... a good thing.......2007-07-24
this book is for serious, but not too serious, boaters. for me it opened the door to understanding why certain hull designs do diffeent things, why different marine engine technologies offer different advantages and disadvantages. I wish I had read it before I bought my first boat. But then again, now I know enough to appreciate the depth of understanding on the pages of this book.
Learn how hull shapes affect performance.......2007-01-05
If you are thinking about building a boat from plans, or even designing a boat on your own, it's important to understand how the shape of a hull moves through the water. This book gives an in depth, non-mathematical description of hull performance.
It covers many hull shapes and describes ideal conditions and speeds for each type. This is a must-have for anyone seriously thinking about building a boat. It will give you a better appreciation of the boat that is really right for you. And, for the price, you can't go wrong!
Very recommendable.......2006-03-21
It is a very interesting book, for people begining in the boat field.
Very easy to understand, without technical fireworks.
I strongly recommend it for beginers or not technical background persons
I was not able to obtain the information that I needed........2004-12-04
I brought this book because I needed to work out if a particular boat with a particular outboard would meet certain performance parameters under certain sea conditions.
I was not able to do this with the information in this book.
I found "Propellor Handbook" by Dave Gerr much more usefull.

Uneven........2004-08-06
I am a P3 (intermediate-rated) paraglider pilot. My strong interest in mountain soaring means I am extremely motivated to learn what Understanding The Sky has to offer. I found it to be only a mixed success.
I had studied some meteorology in the past for other purposes, which made this book an easier read. The terminology and some of the concepts are presented so briefly that they would be challenging to grasp if you had no knowledge of them at all when you started the book.
What is great: This book contains a wealth of well-organized information, theoretical and practical, large scale and small scale. It includes such crucial subjects in soaring safety as the formation of rotors under atmospheric waves. (Who would have guessed about those, and they can kill you.) Mr. Pagen has done a lot of flying and has woven his experience and anecdotes into the text throughout. The book is an astonishing compendium.
What is not so great: He uses no footnotes, offers no bibliography, and never names a source. Wind blowing over a mountain has surely been studied by scientists with surface metering equipment, LIDAR guns and other means of collecting data. Id be more comfortable if I knew what references Mr. Pagan had studied to gain his knowledge. There are times when I get the feeling he is making it up based on what seems sensible to him, or what he experienced once or twice in his flying experience. Anecdotes are fine but they should always be presented as such, not mixed in with conclusions drawn more scientifically. My feeling about this may be wrong but without footnotes I have no way to know. I do know that what seems sensible is a poor substitute for actual data when it comes to airflow. Fluid dynamics is incredibly complicated and the subject is full of surprises that go against what seems sensible.
Sometimes he does make clear he is relating something he has personally encountered while soaring and says so. This is good, but he often doesnt say enough. Id like to know how many times he encountered the condition, because in micrometeorology it can be easy to attribute a situation to incorrect causes if you only have one experience to go on. Mr. Pagan occasionally acknowledges this uncertainty, but its not always clear. In one description of air flow over a complicated ridge, he says that the diagram shows what he experienced there, but he doesnt say if it was during a single one hour flight or in flying every day for months. Its also hard to imagine he flew into every rotor shown on the diagram.
What is also not great: Mr. Pagan badly needs a professional editor. His writing is rife with extra words and awkward constructions, and there are numerous errors in the text and figures. He continually uses terms he has not introduced, and while he provides a glossary it is not always adequate to explain them if you have not encountered them before. The pictures are so poorly reproduced that I could only rarely understand what the photo was supposed to illustrate. The challenge of understanding all the information is doubled by the manner of presentation.
At least one diagram appears to have been very precisely photocopied out of another, much older book on the subject, yet again no credit is given. That book is Meteorology for Soaring Pilots, which I recommend without reservation.
The book will be valuable to any pilot. Unfortunately, Mr. Pagens unscientific approach to a scientific subject makes it impossible to know how much of the information can be depended on.
Better photos would help.......2001-06-27
As a paragliding pilot, I bought this book hoping to learn more about the weather and to improve my flying skills. It's a great book, content-wise. It's written specifically for the pilots and is very practicable. It also covers pretty much everything a pilot may need. The book did help me learn more about the weather, although not as much as I had expected, but that's probably because of the difficulty of the subject matter rather than the quality of the book. Weather is a very complicated thing and I think it's only through long experience that one can learn its various tricks. So don't expect to become expert at finding thermals after reading this book. What this book does is it teaches you basic theory and provides lots of information of weather phenomena that pilots can take advantage of in theor flying, in a way understandable to all of us average paragliding or hanggliding pilots. The problem is that in real life weather is often more complicated than that.
My only gripe with the book is not about contents, but the quality of the printed material and binding. The photos and illustrations are not very good, which is quite bad because they are very important in the learning process. For example, it's hard to distinguish between different types of clouds just by looking at their sketchy pictures or the bleak black-and-white photos, some of which are so bleak you almost can't see anything at all. Similarly, it was sometimes hard to make sense of the author's explanations of different weather phenomena, largely because of the poor quality of supporting illustrations. The book's binding was quite weak, and mine split in two just after I read the book once. The book intended for practising pilots who may be carrying it in their backpacks everywhere or even in their harnesses during flights could have a more sturdy binding.
Having said that, I still think it's an excellent book and I would recommend it to all pilots interested in knowing more about the weather.
Informative and enjoyable.......1999-02-07
The book takes a very complicated subject and boils it down to the bare essentials necessary to have a working knowledge of weather. Quite a feat! Of course it helps to have an interest in weather from a hang glider pilot's perspective.

Excellent - motivating.......2007-01-09
The book is laid out in a very logical fashion and includes answers to all the basic questions a boxer in training has. Very detailed and practical. Also very motivating. A must have source for new boxers or boxers looking to kick it up a notch
Good content.......2006-10-23
Very good and detailed info, but the grammar is horrible.Every other sentence is the politicaly correct "he/she" instead of the correct "he" which makes this book somwhat annoying and tiring to read.So buy it, but if you too find plain bad grammar annoying, like me,get your white out ready.
Most Knowlegable Book on Olympic-style Boxing.......2006-04-06
This is the most knowledgable book ever writtien on Olympic-style (amateur) boxing.
The finer points of the game that most people don't even consider, including boxing for judges positioning, computer scoring, five critera for a scoring blow, what to expect as a boxer at a venue, and boxing different styles of boxers are all included. It really shows how boxing is not just getting in the ring and slugging, but a precise and measured art.
The self reflection worksheets are also a valuable tool for keeping track of your training progress for both Olympic-style and professional boxers. I look foward to the next book!
Ulitmate Boxer, wish it was Ulimate book.......2006-03-23
I train boxers in New York City and am also a boxing historian. I collect boxing manuals and this one is just average, not enough information on how to do techniques. Good for someone just starting out but not for anyone looking for detailed information.
The Official Handbook of Boxing!.......2005-09-16
This book is incredibly detailed on the subject of learning how to box. The author IS a boxing coach and everything in the book comes from that point of view. The book is very well organized and very well written. It has important tips and drills to use after key topics. This book will help you to understand not only the fundamentals, but why you do them. This book should be the official handbook of boxing! Even if you have a coach and are training, I still recommend you get this as it gives you the correct ways to box, train, and strategize from an elite-level boxing coach.

Everything about ammunition.......2007-09-07
I found this book very informative and readable. Has the maths formulae in simplified forms; leaves out the insignificant factors. Debunks many of the popular myths about projectile behaviour. A great reference to be returned to again and again.
Understanding Firearm Ballistics.......2006-07-22
I am an engineer and found this book to be a fundamental but comprehensive treatment of interior, exterior, and terminal ballistics. There is much detailed information within the book and technical principles are explained in the text along with some basic algebra. The book could use a comprehensive edit from a scientist, especially a physicist, to clean up some of the technical explanations offered by the author; because I suspect he doesn't always have a deep understanding of the processes he is explaining. While not inaccurate, some of his discourse is difficult to follow and sometimes left unclear with numerous incomplete sentences which are sometimes annoying. Still this is a decent treatment of ballistics and I have learned from reading it. I would recommend it to others.
Good Book.......2005-07-29
This book reads like a text book for a trade school. That's not a bad thing, but no credible editor has ever worked on this book. It needs to be edited, but having said all that, its a very good book for someone interested in ballistics that has no knowledge of the subject, and is not a snooty English teacher. Want a great book on ballistics for the beginner, this is it, and skip all the math as he suggests. Math of this type is for looking up, not reading, and when you're done you'll have a great reference manual.
A must have.......2005-01-17
If you're a shooter, you simply need to have a fundamental knowledge of ballistics. This work gives you the opportunity to either skim and pick up key informatipon, or alternatively, delve into the deep science and math. It belongs in every firearms enthusiasts collection. It's not any easy read; it makes you think. You won't read it once; you'll refer back to it again and again. I don't know of any other ballistics book I would recommend over Rinker's.
Don't buy nor read this book..........2005-01-12
Don't buy nor read this book (if you didn't flunk math ofcourse, then it is valuable). It provides far less information than Robet McCoy's book on the subject. The only part I found at least amusing was the preface, it described ballistics in an almost erotic way. But if you want to know the details about the forces acting on an airborn projectile - forget this title!

Excellent Discussion of Baseball Statistics.......2007-03-08
The author covers virtally all aspects of modern baseball statistics. He explains the various newer statistics without being overly technical. Thus, the "non-geeky" fan who wants to understand will be able to comprehend. He also discusses the differences in data compiled during baseballs different eras. He also has a nice chapter on fantasy baseball and simulation games. Worthwhile addition to your baseball library.

On the surface, baseball looks like such an easy game--you throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the ball, and you run around the bases--but there are so many beautiful and hidden facets to the diamond. If anyone knows the game's on-field secrets, it's Tim McCarver. He caught in the Majors for 21 seasons, handling such Hall of Fame hurlers as Bob Gibson and Steve Carlton. Since hanging up his spikes almost two decades ago, he's been one of the game's most visible, thoughtful, and instructive analysts.
McCarver's Baseball for Brain Surgeons is just that: a packed, at times densely penned, manual for smart and inquisitive fans, written up to their hunger for good, solid, challenging insight into the game's tactics, strategies, and maneuverings. McCarver goes into impressively thorough detail, which is his ultimate strength and occasional weakness; he assumes you've already got at least a baseball B.A. If you don't know a cut fastball from a four-seamer, you might consider applying elsewhere until you do, but if you are indeed up to the demands of a provocative graduate seminar, McCarver's quite a professor. He's an engaging storyteller, he never hides his biases, and while he's naturally strong on his perceptions into the game's most primal relationship of pitcher and catcher, he's never less than major league everywhere else around the diamond.
Book Description
"I started McCarver's book because I was sure he would teach me something. I finished it as Casey Stengel."--The Cincinnati Enquirer
Tim McCarver, baseball's preeminent analyst, has set down all that he knows about how the game should be played and watched. With his trademark wit and style, McCarver explains the fundamentals and proper mechanics at the level necessary for success in the major leagues.
Baseball for Brain Surgeons and Other Fans is a gold mine for all fans, brain surgeons or otherwise, and anyone learning how to play or coach the game. (Even major leaguers will pick up some pointers.) After the wonderful 1998 season, America's pastime has never been more popular, and with the deeper knowledge and understanding of baseball that Brain Surgeons provides, any fan will be able to watch it like a pro.

Everything you need to know about the battery.......2007-07-31
When I first bought this book I thought the title was just a gimmick and that this would just be another half hearted attempt to explain baseball to wives and girlfriends everywhere. Well I was wrong. The info in this book even I at times find hard to follow. The only problem I have is that Mccarver spends 3/4 of the book explaining pitches and hitting counts. Balls are good for hitter, strikes good for pitcher. Its not that hard to figure out. I thought he would explain baserunning and outfielding the same way he explained the battery. He did not so I gave 3 stars.
the best book I've ever read about baseball.......2006-06-27
McCarver having been a catcher, this book contains a treasure trove of knowledge concerning what goes on in the showdown between the batter vs. the pitcher and catcher at every single pitch (and that showdown accounts for 90% of the action in any given baseball game). I have never watched a baseball game the same way since then; thanks to McCarver I understand the game and love watching it more than I ever have. I re-read this book often... it's the definitive field-guide to my favorite sport.
You Could Do Much Worse.......2006-05-28
There have been quite a few reviews posted already, and strangely enough, I agree with almost all of them.
A few years ago, I found this book at a library sale and purchased it for about $2. It's definitely worth $2. I question whether it's worth $20.
STRENGTHS
- To my knowledge, no other single baseball book has ever tackled this many topics at once. Most tactical situations that could ever arise in MLB are covered.
- Fans of Bob Gibson and Steve Carlton will not be disappointed.
- The book is organized in such a way that you can casually read individual sections during a game, on the bus, or...well, you know.
- From a technical standpoint, virtually all of the "skills" information is excellent. (There is only one correct way to throw a knuckler, after all.)
- Anyone will learn at least one new fact from this book. For example, I did not know that LH batters tended to curl the bat, being a righty myself. Subsequent observation has confirmed this.
WEAKNESSES
- Here's the rub. Most of the strengths are also weaknesses. The book is too long and repetitive. For example, if you put it down, you can't remember if you were just reading the chapter on "Pitchers vs. Batters" or "Batters vs. Pitchers."
- Given recent developments in baseball, the book really isn't that "current" anymore. More importantly, McCarver tends to explain the games in the term of how it was played in the 1980s, throwing in more recent players as examples.
- The style is very uneven, alternating between breezy anecdotes and almost textbook-like passages. Tim McCarver: Broadcaster rears his head at times.
- McCarver gives excellent advice on how baseball should be broadcasted, which he now largely ignores himself. Oh, the irony...
- Just four to six pages of b&w photographs (even line drawings, for that matter) would have garnered at least another half star in my review. One of the reasons that the book seems long is that pages of ink are often spilled on something that could have been conveyed with "See Figure 1-3."
Overall, you could do a lot worse. That said, you would eventually glean most of this information from reading a few George Will books, as another reviewer mentioned.
Must read for the hard core fan.......2006-02-18
If you love the ins and out of baseball and want to know more about the tactics and stratigies...this is your book. You should have a good grasp of baseball before reading this however. I look at baseball different now.....I appreciate the nuances more.....
Cav
For Serious Fans Only.......2006-01-14
Let me begin by saying that I like so many baseball fans have two thoughts regarding McCarver. 1) I appreciate this former Major League catcher's immense understanding of the game and 2) I get tired during broadcasts of listening to his endless (and seemingly self-serving and self-inflating) ramblings about what is going on in the heads of players and coaches. That said, the only problem I really had when reading this book was getting McCarver's voice out of my head.
Once I did that I found the material within its pages useful (even in coaching youth baseball) and interesting. It is not however, for the faint hearted or simply casual fan. I think to fully appreciate McCarver's insights, one has to have a little more that rudimentary knowledge of the game. Having been involved in baseball for youth through college I found an easy grasp of his theories and thoughts...I'm not sure the simple newcomer to the game will (but they may).
All-in-all I found the book very enjoyable and it is actually one of the few books that I have actually read TWICE!
