          Book Description

"Reality TV" has rapidly come to occupy a place at the forefront of contemporary television culture on an international scale. This collection responds to this shift by analyzing the terrain of this genre--its range of economic, technological and cultural implications for our understanding of television as both an object of study and a contemporary cultural form. Recognizing how definitions of Reality TV are contentious, the collection examines a range of programs which claim a privileged relation to "the real," from: Candid Camera, Big Brother, Survivor, The Osbournes, he Real World and A Wedding Story, to the spheres of "real crime" programming and make-over TV. Adopting an interdisciplinary focus, these essays cover Reality TV in its myriad forms, examining historical precendents, the international nature of its circulation and consumption, and exploring the key debates which Reality TV has put on our social, cultural and televisual agendas. Topics covered include surveillance, the construction of celebrity, temporality in Reality TV, the politics of representation (with case studies considering the construction of community, women, gay identity and "class"), and audience responses and fandom.

5 out of 5 stars Do Reality Shows Like Survivor Serve Society?.......2004-12-26

It seems as if Survivor will be airing yet another show in 2005 as Survivor-10 or Survivor-Palau.

I wonder how much these show actually help the host country? For example, the country domain is .pw and www.survivor.pw could be used as a fan site for Survivor-Palau. Have the show's producers considered this?

            Book Description

Driven by a combination of technological improvements and commercial pressure, interest in IPTV services has increasingly grown. IPTV refers to the use of the Internet protocol required for delivery of television content. IPTV represents an emerging technology that could change the manner in which homes receive entertainment, personal computers operate, and people use cell phones. Beginning with a comprehensive introduction, Understanding IPTV examines concepts, applications, and possible impacts of IPTV. The book covers market drivers and developing IPTV infrastructure. It explains television concepts, including several popular compression standards, and considers the TCP/IP protocol suite. It also identifies so-called "last mile" solutions and details the operation and utilization of hardware and software components required to view television content delivered over different types of IP networks. The author addresses the industry players and alliances, providing an understanding of companies that are working with the technology. Concluding with examples of the use of IPTV, he illustrates the potential of this evolving technology. Exploring the current state of the IPTV market, business opportunities, and trial services worldwide, Understanding IPTV discusses the advantages that IPTV offers network operators and the new revenue streams that may emerge. It presents different IPTV technologies and the products that manufacturers are bringing to the market.

            Book Description

A ROADMAP FOR IMPLEMENTING THE ATSC DATA BROADCAST STANDARD The ATSC Data Broadcast Standard provides the means to transform digital TV signals from plain vanilla audio/video to 57-flavor broadband digital data delivery, opening a universe of device and service possibilities. Authored by four of the standard’s lead writers -- Richard Chernock, Regis Crinon, Michael Dolan, and John R. Mick, Jr. -- Data Broadcasting is the first guide to the new ATSC standard.

            These experts help you:

*Understand the concepts behind standard provisions for carrying any type of data over MPEG-2 data transport mechanisms
*Implement the standard in real-world service creation and rollouts
*Enable a new generation of set-top boxes, hand-held devices, and PC add-in cards for handling both data and streaming video
*Configure stand-alone data injection and data injection associated with video and audio programs
*Define the optimal transmittal method for any type of data
*Resolve system architecture, receiver-reference design, data categorization, and encapsulation questions
*Solve announcement, and discovery and binding mechanisms problems
*Avoid implementation pitfalls with encapsulation examples, illustrated layering, and buffer models

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great MPEG Systems reference too.......2002-03-28

I found this book to be a great resource for the engineering and design fundamentals that relate to the question "how is all that data formatted and organized in digital television broadcasting?" The MPEG-2 Systems Standard is one of the foundations of digital television. If you're interested in how MPEG-2 really works at the system level, you'll find this book an excellent resource. The chapter on MPEG Transport by itself is worth the price of the book, but it also does a great job explaining another arcane MPEG-2 Standard, Digital Storage Media Command and Control (DSM-CC). It turns out DSM-CC is very useful in data broadcasting, but if you were to pick up the IEC standard itself and try to make sense of it, you'd find it very challenging.

Even though broadcasters have not started transmitting data along with digital television, this book sets the framework for understanding how it will be done. It's written by those experts in the field who actually designed the standard, so you know the information is accurate.

            5 out of 5 stars Great work.......2002-02-28

I highly recommend this book to all those who develop or maintain data broadcasting systems.

The good point is that it is not at all a replication of the specification (though a true copy of the A/90 spec is added as an appendix). The concepts are clear, progressive and sufficiently illustrated.

Chapter 3 alone tells you most you need to know about MPEG-2 Systems standard. I gained extra insight from it even after I had studied the original 13818-1 spec.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Work.......2001-10-31

This book, written by several of data broadcast specification authors, is The Definitive Work on the ATSC Data Broadcast specification.

If you are an implementer of data broadcasting, you need exactly two things: a copy of the specification and a copy of this book.

            Download Description

Myth, Mind and the Screen is a systematic attempt to apply Jungian theory to the analysis of films (including 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Silence of the Lambs and The Piano) as well as a variety of cultural icons and products such as Madonna, Michael Jackson and televised sport. Through these and other examples, John Izod shows how Jungian theory can bring new tools to film and media studies and new ways of understanding screen images and narratives. He also demonstrates how Jungian analysis can provide us with fresh insights into the psychological dimensions of contemporary mythology and the subjective experience of audiences. Perhaps most controversially, he argues that in the Western world cinema and television bear much of the responsibility for collective emotional mediation that in previous centuries was borne by organised religion. A valuable resource for students of film and media studies, cultural studies and psychoanalytic studies.

4 out of 5 stars A Jungian analysis of the "shaping myths of our time".......2006-03-26

Izod concisely lays out a method of approaching films using Jungian interpretation. Much has been written on film interpretation from a Freudian viewpoint. The field of Jungian film interpretation is growing rapidly in popularity. His chapter on pop stars-particularly Madonna as trickster is excellent. I can also recommend his chapter interpreting Silence of the Lambs.

This is a book written for serious Jungian scholars. However for those needing a quick overview Izod does a nice job of explicating the basics of Jungian theory. Izod's interpretations are good and it is clear he has a passion for film and Jungian theory. All in all a very interesting book!
