Book Description
In the spirit of Jon Krakauer's bestselling Into the Wild, Eric Blehm's The Last Season examines the extraordinary life of legendary backcountry ranger Randy Morgenson and his mysterious disappearance in California's unforgiving Sierra Nevada.
The granite spires of the High Sierra have historically been a refuge of inspiration and adventure for the likes of John Muir and Ansel Adams, as well as for the pioneering rock climbers of the 1960s. But these mountains are as perilous as they are beautiful: here is where the Donner Party was trapped and where scores of unlucky hikers must be rescued every year. The Last Season tells the inspiring, poignant story of Morgenson, who, over the course of twenty-eight summers living alone in this craggy wilderness, became a celebrated ranger in the National Park Service's most adventurous unit. For the solitary, introspective Morgenson, who grew up in Yosemite Valley and as a young man honed his mountaineering skills in the Himalayas, this was more than a job -- it was a calling. He became fiercely devoted to preventing outside forces from encroaching on the wilderness he loved.
But over the years, the isolation Morgenson had once cherished took its toll, and he grew increasingly estranged from his wife and friends. When, at the height of his struggles, he went missing without a trace in Kings Canyon National Park, where he had long patrolled, many suspected suicide or foul play. Morgenson, after all, had once said, "The least I owe these mountains is a body." As one of the Park Service's most intensive search-and-rescue operations unraveled, some wondered if they were searching for a man who did not want to be found.
Destined to become a classic in mountain literature, The Last Season is a work that is as captivating in its writing as it is compelling in its sense of adventure. It is the result of eight years of research by Eric Blehm to uncover the truth about one of the national parks' greatest mysteries. Blehm's reconstruction of a desperate search-and-rescue operation woven with Morgenson's riveting biography takes readers deep into the heart of the High Sierra and into the little-known and much-romanticized world of the backcountry rangers -- revealing in the end the mind and spirit of a complicated, original, and wholly fascinating man.

Sierra Backcountry Ranger Requiem.......2007-09-22
If you have hiked the High Sierras, no doubt you will love this book! It offers a penetrating look at a 28 year veteran back country ranger in the Sequoia Kings Canyon National Park, who disappeared during his last season. Why would anyone spend 28 years as a seasonal, low paid, poorly appreciated back country ranger? Who would put up with living in the isolated back country, on call 24/7? How could such a seasoned veteran simply vanish from the face of the earth? Why did an 8 day search for him, using almost 100 experienced rangers, search and rescue dogs, and multiple helicopters fail to find him? What part did depression over a failing marriage and guilt over an affair with another back country ranger play in his disappearance? Did he commit suicide? Or - - - did the fall out of this depression so cloud his judgement that he made a fatal mistake as he crossed his familiar beloved wilderness? As you may guess, I love the High Sierra and enjoyed this book immensely. Randy Morgenson reminds me a lot of John Muir. I take my well worn hiking and back packing hat off to this man who speaks so eloquently for the WILD! There is a lot of food for thought in this book for those who hike and backpack in the bush, seeking the silence and peace that only can be found there!
Captured their world.......2007-08-25
As a seasonal firefighter and helitack crewman in Sequoia & Kings Canyon NPs from 1977-1980, I encountered some of the backcountry rangers (Randy Morgenson included) on medevacs, re-supply flights, etc. My wife and I still maintain friendships with George Durkee and Paige Meier. Blehm has done an excellent job of describing their world.
Very Good Book.......2007-08-10
Just finished this book, very good. It would have rated 5 stars for me if it was just a wee bit shorter as it did drag just a tad. I usually don't write reviews but I needed to counter some negative reviews in comparison where people contrasted it to "Into the Wild". "Into the Wild" is better written, to be sure. But contrary to some reviewers opinions, this man, Randy Morgenson, was truly someone who's life was "book worthy." The kid in "Into the Wild" basically threw his life away and really never contributed anything to anyone or anything. Randy really helped alot of people and "the land" and his life stood and meant something. I did enjoy Into the Wild, it was compelling, but as far as the main characters, NO comparison. Randy is an inspiration, Cris McCandless was just a lost soul......
Randy Morgenson - Gentle Giant.......2007-08-10
Over the last twenty years I have hiked all or most of the John Muir Trail sixteen times from south to north. Between 1987 and 1996 I had the privilege and honor of getting to know Randy on the trail. His friendly kind face at McClure was always a welcome sight. I would always take a layover day just to be able to spend some time talking to him about wilderness and the incredible beauty of the Sierras. His understanding of the mountains was deep and compelling. He was perhaps one of the most experienced introspective mountaineers the Sierras have ever seen. His knowledge of the High Sierra was tremendous and his humble sincere love of the land truly an inspiration - for such a powerful mountaineer Randy was such a gentle poetic person. This book does a superb job of capturing Randy and his pure love of the High Sierra while at the same time documenting the monolithic effort to find him. Also, having known over the years many of the backcountry rangers involved in the search, and knowing first hand what a close family they are I would also say that the author very deftly weaves into the book the fraternal nature of the search. I highly recommend Eric Blehm's "The Last Season" to anyone that has spent time in the wilderness (especially the Sierras) it reads like a mystery but has a very personal touch. Randy the Range of Light misses you, there is a tear in every thunderstorm, thank you for all the beautiful words.
Couldn't pull myself away.......2007-07-30
Eric Blehm crafted a tale rich in detail and sincerity with The Last Season. While Morgenson's life and his disappearance made for a great mystery ripe for any author to pick, Blehm's attention to the true main character-the high Sierras-gave the story a texture that would have otherwise been lacking. The layers of the story contantly unfolded to reveal a depth that gave the reader pause to contemplate the inherent conflicts. The enormity of the landscape crept up from the pages-it was like traveling through the park each night as I picked up the book. A great read for anyone who appreciates a well written, complicated story-especially the endings.

Book Description
Be careful what you wish for....
On her thirty-fourth birthday, Daisy Minor decides to make over her entire life. The small-town librarian has had it with her boring clothes, her ordinary looks, and nearly a decade without so much as a date. It's time to get a life -- and a sex life. The perennial good girl, Daisy transforms herself into a party girl extraordinaire -- dancing the night away at clubs, laughing and flirting with abandon -- and she's declared open season for manhunting. But her free-spirited fun turns to shattering danger when she witnesses something she shouldn't -- and becomes the target of a killer. Now, before she can meet the one man who can share her life, first she may need him to save it.
Seamlessly blending heart-pounding romance and breathless intrigue, Linda Howard delivers a stylish and provocative novel that absolutely defies readers to put it down.
Customer Reviews:
Go, Daisy!.......2007-06-26
I have been a fan of Linda Howard for a long time, even way back during her Silhouette novel years. Open Season is one of the funniest. I highly recommend all her novels. Suspenseful and very romantic.
Librarian gone wild, sort of.......2007-06-22
Ok, I admit it, although I come off as intellectual and high brow, I read popular fiction and trashy books every once in a while. Just don't tell my peers, ok? Ha ha ha ... I picked this up sometime during my neverending quest for entertainment during the workday, as I had joined the Books On Tape revolution 10 years ago with my first office job. This was a good story, albiet a little unbelievable.
Daisy Minor wakes up on the morning of her 34th birthday in a fit of depression. She's a small town, startchy old maid librarian, who lives with her elderly widowed mother and aunt, and she's not getting any younger. She decides that she wants to find a man, get married and have babies before it's too late. Thanks to her mother, aunt, and sassy gay man friend, she makes herself over and starts hitting the scene looking for a man. Unknown to her, the new chief of police, Jack, who likes coming in and razzing her at every turn, has his eyes on her for more than just a sparring partner. And since their first meeting they can't stand each other, they will inevitably get together and live happily ever after.
Daisy's bumbling antics are along the lines of Bridget Jones and Cathy from the comics, happily attempting new things, sometimes stepping in one disaster after another, and drowning in one neurosis after another. It speaks to all of us, trying to put on a brave face and trying to be one of the crowd when we're really scared to death. So Daisy has mass appeal, we're rooting for the underdog a la Cinderella.
Why not 5 stars? There is a backstory under this one which is a little unbelievable, and they worked a little too hard to interlock her with the seemy underbelly of their small town. Even in small towns, date rape drugs are no doubt a problem. But an underground sex trade railroad? It happens, but I would be more apt to believe something like that would be through the bigger cities. Then again, if they're doing it right they're trafficing them through the smaller towns and law enforcement never finds them. There is a little twist, as the sassy gay man friend is actually a federal agent deep undercover. And Daisy sees something she shouldn't have in the parking lot of a bar and that's how she gets connected to the sex trade ring. It's a little unbelievable, but that's ok. It's light entertainment not heavy epics.
One of my Favs.......2007-06-15
This is one of my favorite books. The story of a librarian frump who makes the choice to change her image and in doing so catches the man mixed with some mystery and adventure plus Howard's sense of humor makes for a great story!!
Cute!.......2007-04-26
I liked this short, easy story by Linda Howard. Thirty-four year old, librarian, Daisy is on the hunt for a husband and has decided that she will make changes in her appearance and personal life to make sure that she accomplishes her goal. With friends and loved ones lending a helping hand, she has decided to start going to clubs to meet people. From the beginning, we see Chief Jack Russo (a big time city cop, who has semi-retired and become the Chief of Police in this small town) bully his way into Daisy's life and heart. And for a minute, Daisy did reminded me a lot of Blair in "Drop Dead Gorgeous", because she seems to be adding up Chief Russo's transgressions on a long list to be used against him at a later date. Anyway, while Daisy attempts to navigate the dating scene she sees something she shouldn't, and although she doesn't realize it, someone else does. However,it is my opinion that romance is secondary to the plot in the story. The other storyline is more interesting and creative. I won't tell you the plot, I will only tell you that for a small town a lot is going on. Corruption, human trafficking, undercover agents, drugs (GHB), and a list of other crimes that make this small town seem like the big city.
The criticisms that I have about this story is simple, some of the storylines were not developed. Although we saw the romance bloom between Daisy and Jack, her fire dies down midway through and is overshadowed by other people. There were also other characters, like Todd or the Mayor's wife, who could have been enhanced. But I guess for a short, fast paced novel (although some considered it from the reviews slow in the beginning)you can't strengthen each storyline, and as long as the integrity of the story remains strong, it is ok.
NOT BAD....3.5 STARS!!!!.......2007-04-07
In this slow-starting mystery/romance, 34-year-old Daisy Minor is the stereotypical small-town librarian. She is plain, boring, and lives with both her aunt and mother. But Daisy wants more for herself; she wants marriage, a family, and a slightly more exciting life. But she also realizes that none of the former happen to 30+, mousy brown-haired librarians with stodgy wardrobes. Suddenly--with thoughts of a makeover--Daisy enlists the help and support of both of the women in her life...who in turn reach out to the gay and fashion-conscious Todd Lawrence. Soon, a gorgeous, blonde-haired bombshell is born. Daisy feels ready to take on the world to find the man of her dreams...and begins by hitting the hottest bar in her Alabama one-horse town solo. But how can she possibly "spread" the word of her availability? At every turn the horribly rude Chief Jack Russo seemed to lurk...thwarting her plans, each and every time. He even turns up at Daisy's nightclub debut....and that was the night that the tide turned. He kissed her, and she realized soon thereafter that perhaps she need not "spread" the word after all.
All seems fine until one evening when the mayor himself calls Chief Russo to run a check on a license plate...and offers a bogus explanation for the request. The plates in question belongs to none other than Daisy herself, and the Chief smells a rat. Surveillance and the mayor's wife soon reveal a much darker plot than even the Chief had ever imagined. And it soon becomes quite clear that the only loose end remaining is Daisy herself.......
With a serviceable plot and steamy sex scenes, if readers can move beyond the slow beginning and the sometimes unbelievably dated verbage of the main character, they are in for a treat. Does this tale send one on a hunt for all Linda Howard novels? Not really...but it does make one curious.

The Good Friday agreement that promised to bring peace to the embattled Protestants and Catholics of Northern Ireland is jeopardized by a new paramiltary group bent on destroying the truce. Michael Osbourne, the hero of Silva's previous thriller, The Mark of the Assassin, is rerecruited by the CIA when Douglas Cannon--his father-in-law, a former senator, and the new ambassador to the Court of St. James--is targeted for death by the Ulster Freedom Brigade. Osbourne has long since given up on the spying game and is reluctant to be drawn back into it again. Then he discovers that the Brigade has shopped the contract on Senator Cannon to October, the assassin who narrowly missed killing Osbourne a few years ago but succeeded in murdering the woman he once loved. It's a good setup for a political thriller, with nonstop action that moves from Belfast to Armagh, New York to Washington, London to Mykonos. What really notches up the suspense is the double-dealing in the corridors of power, particularly the CIA and a secret organization called the Society--a nasty assemblage of politicos, spymasters, arms merchants, and killers bent on destabilizing nascent peacemaking efforts all over the globe. Down but not out at the conclusion of Silva's latest, the Society and Osbourne will likely be back for a return engagement the next time warring factions attempt to beat their swords. In fact, as the director of the Society says in the last chapter, "The Kosovo Liberation Front would like our help: Gentlemen, we're back in business." --Jane Adams
Book Description
Daniel Silva burst onto the scene in 1996 with one of the most auspicious thriller debuts in years-- The Unlikely Spy , a New York Times and international bestseller. The following year he solidified his reputation as one of the foremost thriller writers of his generation with another instant New York Times bestseller, The Mark of the Assassin .
With
The Marching Season, Silva delivers his most entertaining novel yet--an electrifying tale of terror, revenge, and greed, straight out of tomorrow's headlines. It is the first uncertain year of the peace process in Northern Ireland, a land ravaged by centuries of religious and political conflict. On a single night, a renegade group of Protestant extremists tries to turn back the hands of time with three savage acts of terrorism.
Retired CIA officer Michael Osbourne, the hero of The Mark of the Assassin, is lured back to the Agency after his father-in-law, former U.S. Senator Douglas Cannon, is nominated to be the new American ambassador to London. When Michael discovers that the Protestant gunmen have marked Cannon for execution, he sets in motion a deadly contest of wits and deception that will determine whether the peace in Northern Ireland will survive and whether his father-in-law lives or dies.
What Michael Osbourne does not realize is that he is a pawn in a much larger game. Once again, his destiny is controlled by the Society, a secret order that uses its power and influence to foster global unrest for financial gain. And once again, he is pitted against his personal bête noire, Jean-Paul Delaroche, the world's most dangerous assassin, who slipped through Michael's fingers at the climax of The Mark of the Assassin .
Filled with breathtaking plot twists,
The Marching Season spirals to a riveting conclusion. It is a novel of power and intrigue, where appearance and reality are enemies and trust is betrayed as often as it is honored.
Customer Reviews:
Thrilling read!.......2007-10-02
I got hooked on Daniel Silva's writing with his latest book - The Secret Servant. His writing is delicious - he has a way of painting a brilliant, detailed visual scene without bogging down his narrative, and that's a gift I wish more writers had. This story deals with the inter-faith struggles in Ireland, but it's the personal story of the hero, Michael Osbourne, and his history with the assassins that drives the story at breakneck speed. It's well worth the dollars - you'll be glued to your chair until you've finished.
The Marching Season.......2007-08-29
Another thriller written by a great author. He builds the story and
creates an increasing excitement about what is going to happen
next. Just when I think I have him figured out, there's a new
twist to push me along. Can't wait to read his next book.
Silva continues to March along........2007-08-04
This is the first Silva Novel that I have not given 5 stars. But this is still a good book. Scenes shift between London, Northern Island, Long Island and the DC area. Good scene on Key Bridge which connects Georgetown and Arlington. Ending a little implausible. But good relationship dialogue between Michael Osborne and his wife.
Main focus is Peace in Northern Island. But it would help if one had read the previous Novel in the Non-Gabriel Allon series, "Mark of the Assassin"
Relax and enjoy.
Silva Does It Again!.......2007-03-12
Silva never lets me down. I have now read all of his books.
As suspenseful as book one..........2007-03-06
The Marching Season by Daniel Silva is the sequel to The Mark of the Assassin and is every bit as suspenseful as the first book.
The beginning of The Marching Season takes place in Northern Ireland, where a group of Protestants are upset over the Good Friday peace accords. Calling themselves the Ulster Freedom Brigade, they orchestrate three terrorist acts throughout the United Kingdom. They are "dedicated to the preservation of the Protestant way of life in Northern Ireland and the preservation of British rule."
Michael Osbourne is a former CIA agent who battled wits with a hired assassin, code-named October, in The Mark of the Assassin. He quit the agency at the end of book one. But his former boss, Adrian Carter, convinces Osbourne to return to the agency to run the division of counterterrorism in Northern Ireland. Osbourne also has a personal stake in this new assignment: his father-in-law, the former senator Douglas Cannon, has been named as the new ambassador to England. The Ulster Freedom Brigade has made it clear that they will punish anyone they feel has had a hand in the peace process and the Americans are not exempt. The new ambassador is definitely a target. Unfortunately for Osbourne, the Ulster Freedom Brigade gets assistance from The Society for International Development and Cooperation, as well as their hired assassin, October. The super-secret society actually promotes "constant, controlled global tension through covert operations." Their goal is to "make money and protect their own interests."
Silva's writing is always first rate and he has firsthand knowledge of both inside the beltway and working inside the intelligence community. In describing how the CIA would work on a project with MI5 and MI6, and who would run the operation, he muses "the second question was more difficult because it involved turf, and in the world of intelligence, turf is protected at all costs, oftentimes better than secrets."
Once again, the one thing that prevented me from giving The Marching Season five stars is that I thought the ending was a total stretch. Still, it's a good read and a thrilling story and I'm hoping we'll see more of Osbourne in the future.

Wonderful easy reader -parents will enjoy it, too........2001-06-28
Henry and Mudge books are some of the best books available to beginning readers, and parents would be hard-pressed not to enjoy them as well. While a few of the books in the series show Henry's idyllically happy parents in a way that might make children from less traditional families sad or "homesick" for that situation, this particular book is purely about a little boy, his big dog, their imaginations, and being a kid in the summer. Cynthia Rylant's writing is fun yet poetic, and Sucie Stevenson's illustrations are charming as always.
Summer adventures with H&M!.......2001-04-05
Henry and Mudge are the best of friends. It doesn't matter at all that one of them walks on four legs and drools a lot!!
In this third book in the H&M series, summertime has arrived with adventures galore for boy & dog. Divided into chapters, each functioning as a mini story but related to each other, Henry and his 180-pound dog Mudge explore the wide, green world of summer. In one of the most notable chapters, a bee stings Henry, and boy does it HURT!! Fortunately, good ol' Mudge is there to make Henry feel better (a good face-licking by Mudge helps Henry forget his pain at being stung-Mudge likes the salty taste of tears).
As a teacher I love the H&M series because the illustrations are always bright, vibrant and immediately draw my students into the story. I also love the short, easy sentences, which are perfect for beginning-to-intermediate readers who feel that they're ready to tackle chapter books. As a parent, I love the way that this series is about the small adventures in life that are right on the level of the reader. Nothing blows up, aliens don't invade the countryside sucking out peoples' innards, and the world isn't narrowly saved from oblivion. Mudge is a wonderfully realistic dog that is completely devoted to Henry, like most real dogs are devoted to the children they live with.
As of this writing, there are some 20 H&M books, each a small treasure and each a wonderful read. Though they're numbered, it's not at all necessary to begin with #1 and progress up to #20; readers can grab whichever title catches their whim and follow along with the adventures. I myself have read them all and am not so patiently waiting for the next ones to come out. Each book comes highly recommended.
My favorite of them all...so far.......1999-07-30
My 4-year-old son, Frank, has 16 of the 18 (?) books that are available in this collection, and although all of them come hightly recommended, I believe Green Time to be the best. This book highlights all that is good about a boy and his dog. Rylant never personifies Mudge too much but depicts their relationship beutifully. When my son read about Mudge getting a bath, he giggled as each part was washed. But the biggest surprise was watching his sheer delight as Mudge shook from head-to-toe. He understands that Henry would cry when he gets stung by a bee, and he laughed when Mudge eats popcorn. These books are simple and kind, and I hope there are more.

I had this book for about a week when the smell was gone. I have bought several scratch and sniff books and none of them seem to last! As a child my stickers smelled strong for a long time. I guess someone came up with new, better, safer, non-lasting chemicals to make them out of :(
Buy some stickers, their cheaper to replace.

A Terrible, Terrible Book.......2007-06-24
SEASON OF THE MACHETE is James Patterson's second novel, originally written in the mid 1970s. This book was re-issued in the 1990s to capitalize on the success of the Alex Cross series. Although I'm a fan of Patterson's later work, I found this particular novel to be remarkably bad.
There are so many things wrong with this novel it's hard to list them all. The characterization in SEASON OF THE MACHETE is thin to non-existent. The premise of the novel is absurd, and the rambling, incoherent plotline made for a confusing read. Ever read a book and have no idea what's going on most of the time? Or much less care? This is that kind of novel.
In short, SEASON OF MACHETE is one the most painful reading experiences I've had in a long time. Unless you're a Patterson completist, my advice is to avoid this novel at all costs.
I FEAR THAT THIS ONE JUST DID NOT DO IT FOR ME........2007-04-13
I write very, very few reviews in which I trash a book or an author. I am giving this one two stars simply because the author is James Patterson, and I do admire much of his work. This book though, my goodness, I could not even finish it! That is a very rare event in my life. The story was forced, disorganized and simply not good. The characters had no character and were very poorly developed. The story is simply about a couple killing people, innocent people. Might as well watch the evening news. I do not recommend this one, although I do still recommend the larger body of this author's work. Sorry James, this is the best I could do with this one.
I, too, listened to Season of the Machete.......2007-01-09
I bought this book to listen to on a long driving trip. Expecting the usual entertaining quality of Mr. Patterson's work, I was disappointed. The story and characters were not well developed, but I continued to listen. As the end I was puzzled by this book and finally thought to look at the copyright date - 1977! I've concluded it was written early in Mr. Patterson's career and that's the explanation I choose to accept for my disappointment! This will not prevent my buying his more recent books.
Terrible!!.......2006-12-19
This book is just so disjointed and poorly written, it is very difficult to follow what's going on, let alone be interested in it at all. I bailed after just 25 pages. The only cool aspect of this book is that it has a character with my name, but once he is killed off by page 25, that's when I figured it was a sign that would be a good place to stop reading.
Readers familiar with his post Along the Spider novels won't even believe this is written by the same James Patterson. It's obvious that this book was only re-released to steal money from those who started reading Patterson for the Cross series, and I feel like a sucker for buying this book.
In musical terms, I analogize this with Ministry's With Sympathy.
SEASON OF THE MACHETE.......2006-02-19
THE BOOK WAS A TYPICAL PATTERSON THRILLER. KEEPS YOU INTERESTED AND YOUR HEART POUNDING. AFTER A FEW OF HIS BOOKS YOU START LOOKING FOR THE ANTI-TYPICAL VILLIAN IN THE FIRST CHAPTER.

An education on the Inside Passage.......2000-10-06
What a great account of cruising the Inside Passage from Seattle to Alaska from a fisherman who has been there and done that! It is a book I could not put down. You get an education on the cruising challenges, the weather, the fishing industry and breathtaking beauty of the Area. Joe Upton's experience from a small boat is nature in your face and will keep you on the edge of your seat. The book is full of great pictures and maps showing Joe's cruising routes during his 7 month season of fishing. This book gave me an education on what to expect cruising the Inside Passage which I want to do someday in a small boat. Anyone who wants to know more about the Inland Waters will love this book. Someday a movie will have to be made about this true story. Thank-you Joe for writting this book... it is a classic of history.
Very real!.......1999-10-26
Easy to read and to get 'involved in the story'. I have fished many of the areas described and the author is very accurate. Great reading if you have spent any time in Alaska.
Preping for Travel.......1999-04-25
We are preparing to Experience the Inside Passage during the summer of 1999. This will be our first trip. We wanted to read a book that would give us an idea of history, and what to expect on this first trip. This book is excellent on preparing one for a trip to this magestic country. Not only do you learn about the fishing industry, you learn about history, the summer weather, how residents survive in this country, its wildlife and senery. The maps in the book and their description of travel through the many inside passages is great and we now have a much better idea of what to expect when we arrive.
Certainly worth reading if you have an interest in the coast line from Seattle to Skageway.

A beautifully detailed and illustrated fisherman's diary........1999-03-09
Joe Upton has a way with words and pictures that captures the changing, and often savage, beauty of the Southeast Coast of Alaska. Follow the daily adventures of the author, his wife and a dog as they ply the Alaskan salmon trade in a 32' boat from Seattle to Scagway and back. Beautifully illustrated with the authors own photos and maps its a must read for anyone who loves Alaska, the sea, boats or fishing. We had the good fortune of meeting and dining with the author in l998,(he now writes travel books), while on a cruise of the inside passage. We quickly became a fan of Joe and have devoured all three of his books. I just wish that I had read this book before the cruise. It would have made the trip all that more enjoyable.

In a follow-up to her Newbery Medal-winning story Shiloh, Phyllis Naylor brings Marty Preston and his beagle back in another tale sure to push the emotional buttons of her young audience. Marty doesn't want to lose the dog he struggled so hard to gain, but when he sees Shiloh's old owner, drunk and out hunting on Marty's property, he is afraid of losing Shiloh for good. Along with the moving story of boy loves dog, Naylor offers a sympathetic portrayal of life in West Virginia. Certain to please her many fans, this sequel likely marks a fuller series of stories of Marty and Shiloh. (Ages 8 to 12)
Book Description
The motion picture based on Phyllis Reynolds Naylor's Newbery Medal-winning novel Shiloh was given two thumbs-up by Siskel and Ebert and went on to sell more than one million copies in video. Now Marty Preston and his beloved dog Shiloh are back on the screen in Shiloh 2, the stirring sequel to Shiloh, and Marty's problems aren't over.
With hunting season approaching, Judd Travers, Shiloh's abusive former owner, has started drinking again, and Judd Travers, beer, and a gun are a dangerous combination. What if Judd tries to hurt Shiloh? What if he tries to hurt Marty or someone in Marty's family? Marty knows something about Judd no one else does, and if anything terrible happens, the secret bargain Marty struck with Judd could make it Marty's fault. Is it time for Marty to speak up? And can he find the courage to do so?

Shiloh Season.......2007-01-10
Shiloh Season is a really great book. It is the sequal to the Newbery Medal winner Shiloh. So it contiues with Marty and his dog Shiloh who he got from a mean grumpy man named Judd Travers. Judd has started drinking and that is causing problems with him and Marty. For example Judd is blaming everything that happens to him on Marty. Will Judd and Marty ever become friends? Well to find out you should read this book!
Faith from creston.......2006-11-22
The novel Shiloh Season is an excitant novel by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. Shiloh Season is a good book.
In the narrative the characters were unbelievable. Marty and Shiloh are my favorite characters. Judd was mean at beginning at the end Judd was a nice guy. Phyllis Naylor wrote such an enchanting novel. She should rite another Shiloh story.
My favorite scenes in this novel is when Shiloh licked Judd's hand. If I would not change in I would not because Shiloh Season is a good book.
I learned from this novel that you should not people. I would recommend this book for my friends because I is a good book.
Good Sequel, Some Reservations.......2006-08-30
Shiloh Season is the second book in the Shiloh Trilogy. In this ongoing saga, 11-year-old Marty must face some of the consequences of past decisions, particularly the secret of how he managed to "buy" his beagle Shiloh from Judd Travers, his previous owner. Just when we thought Marty's fears about Shiloh's well-being were over, Judd begins to drink heavily and is displaying erratic behavior which causes Marty to once again fear for Shiloh's safety, as well as his own. Marty faces some difficult decisions again, as well as showing maturity as he wrestles with needing to protect Shiloh and wanting to find out if it's possible to teach kindness to someone who has never known it.
While this sequel was very enjoyable, it somewhat lacked the page-turning intensity of its predecessor. In Shiloh, Naylor deftly managed to make all the characters alive and a meaningful addition to the book, but Shiloh Season didn't quite draw me in as well and the scenes with Shiloh himself almost seem superfluous. If you are a fan of Marty and Shiloh, then you will most likely enjoy this next part of the story. If you haven't read the first book, I would highly recommend reading it first and become a fan before reading this second book.
Positive Elements: Though Marty's willingness to take risks in reaching out to Judd Travers stem from his desire to keep Shiloh safe, he learns compassion in the process and then attempts to teach it to Judd himself. Again, this book demonstrates to us an excellent work ethic and devotion to family. Marty may not always know what the right thing to do is, but his desire to do the right thing is refreshing.
Negative Elements: As in the first book, there are scenes which may frighten or disturb some children, including the use of firearms. One of the main themes of the book deals with abusing alcohol, and I edited out some language as I read this book aloud to my children.

The most in-depth episode guide available.......2007-03-19
The ABOUT TIME series is the most in-depth (though currently incomplete) guide to Doctor Who. Volume two in the series examines Seasons 4-6, the adventures of the second Doctor. In addition to production notes and an critique of each episodes, there are notes and essays on continuity and the series in a cultural context. While not as handy as a one volume guide, the ABOUT TIME series makes for a much more interesting read.
