Fascinating account of abduction.......2007-10-03
This was a very interesting read. Sparks gives many details of his encounters with ETs including grays and reptilians. He was forced to learn some kind of language by these ETs who also claimed they own us!
He also had encounters with military people who were working with grays and using some kind of teleportation device on him.
Linda M. Howe and John Mack apparently found him to be credible. I read this book with a group and a skeptical member of the group was shocked to read an account that matched their own experience! Very interesting!
keepers:an alien message for the human race.......2007-08-28
Wonderful, best recolection of an alien encounter ever. Makes you stop and think, eyes wide open, and it could happen to anybody.
Think about it..........2007-08-07
I am really so very tired of all the ignorant people who constantly ask: "If there are UFO's, why don't they show themselves in some irrefutable way, like hang out over the White House for a day?"
Firstly, can you imagine the scene? Most people are asleep and unenlightened. A UFO hanging over the White House would certainly seem threatening and would be completely and utterly life changing. Our ideas of who we are would change in an instant, especially for those whose ideas of life are founded in religion. This planet is not ready for such an event.
If there are aliens, obviously they've evolved in such a way that war and hatred are no longer a predominant focus in their lives. If they hadn't learned to get along, they would have destroyed themselves long ago. They are technoligically and spiritually evolved and obviously would not want to force themselves on a planet that is still in kindergarten in the Universe. We would revere them as Gods, and again, our planet is not ready for such an event.
For gosh sakes. The Universe is made up of, literally, MILLIONS of galaxies, like our own Milky Way. Are you really willing to declare that life on other planets could not have possibly evolved much in the way our planet has evolved? Isn't that a silly assumption? Are you the sort of person who would have jailed Galileo for stating that the earth is not the center of our galaxy? Or would you have laughed when it was said the earth was not flat? Stop driving into your garage after work and popping a beer! Learn to think! Go outside of your own comfort zone and imagine a reality different than the one you've created---one devoid of logic.
You think that a grand cover up could not have happened? Please! The Government would rather shrivel up and die than admit they've lied to us for more than fifty years about UFO's. Perfectly sane and logical people have attested to seeing them, including astranout Edgar Mitchell, the former Governor of Arizona, and emergency room doctor Steven Greer. In fact, the last person alive involved in the Roswell incident signed an affadavit right before he died attesting to the truth about Roswell! It was released last week. Heck, even Jimmy Carter says he saw a UFO. These people aren't crazy---just honest.
Hmmmm...what does the Government have to lose? Trillions of dollars in block operation money, their shirts, their integrity, their power...and last but not least----their oil! If aliens are visiting us, obviously they have found a better way to run engines than using oil. Imagine the oil magnates giving up their power and profits to entertain propulsion technology-----a use of natural laws to propel transportation systems, specifically crafts. You think they'd just roll over and let it happen? Cover ups happen by those who have the most to lose, especially the rich and powerful.
Think about alien visitation as a way for other planetary species to slowly indoctrinate us to their existence. They're letting us know that they are here without imposing their way of life on us. Clever and intelligent, I think. Heck, they're facing a government that won't even admit their existence. They know that. They get it.
Abductions? Maybe. They may be overly curious. I don't blame them, really. We're an interesting species... still murdering eachother. letting eachother starve, but capable of great compassion and good works.
I'd be really curious about our species, too. Intersting sort we are.
Most people want irrefutable proof. If an astonaut and a Governor don't do it for you, visit this site (www.disclsoureproject.org) where dozens of high placed officials testified in front of the press that yes, ufo's exist. Guess what? The press didn't cover it very well...hmmm...wonder why. And here's a morning jolt along with your Starbucks coffee---the video of these people testifying are on line. All you have to do is look.
Brazil just initiated their own UFO Investigation council. Mexico is not shy about reporting them and other countries have opened up their books on UFO'S. Sorry your country stinks in this manner, but then think of JFK. There has always been a lot of secrets in this country. Face up.
Oh yes, America the beautiful, home of the brave, truth, yadda, yadda, yadda. You wouldn't believe what you don't know here, but hey, they keep you so busy paying bills, outrageous interest rates and working your butts off most of your life, you don't have time to think about important things like oil, aliens and war. They like it that way. They prefer us to be a bunch of sheep, but hey, keep telling yourself how free you are.
Life on other planets?
It very well may be. Einstein and friends all believed it, but who was he? Oh, probably the most intelligent man to ever walk the earth, but don't take his word for it. You must know better.
This book is interesting, but there's a lot of disinformation about the UFO experience. Personally, I don't believe in all this scary UFO crap---it seems to me another way to discredit this burgeoning reality. I'm skeptical of untoward and war-like aliens and if you don't believe me, read above.
Ask twenty of your friends if they've ever seen a UFO and then do some reading and do some logical thinking..... hmmmmm..... big universe, huh? other planets, too. Why wouldn't there be other life forms? Oh, yes, I know...the world is flat....and oh yes, we are the center of the universe. Poor logic.
Outstanding account of pure terror.......2007-06-27
This man has gone through a transition that literally thousands of other are doing RIGHT now all over the world. Our Government KNOWS what aliens are doing to AMERICANS and does absolutely NOTHING to stop it. This is REAL people....wake UP HOLD our government accountable!
excellent,but stick to the truth.......2007-06-21
I found this book one of the best alien abduction accounts I've ever read, although I'm afraid Mr.Sparks added a little of his own personal fantasy to it.I'm quite skeptical about the people from the future carrying wrong currencies and so on,this seems a little too far-fetched for me.
Book Description
The Publisher claims that we are born into a world controlled by unseen forces that have plagued and manipulated humanity for thousands of years. No, this is no script from a Hollywood movie. It is claimed to be happening to you NOW. You may look around and think that what you see is real. But in truth you are living in an illusion - an illusion designed to keep you in a mental, emotional, spiritual prison cell.
David Icke exposes these forces and their methods of human control and he claims to reveal a fantastic web of global manipulation, orchestrated by forces byond this physical realm. He exposes the hidden bloodlines, through which other-dimensional entities live and operate unseen among us; and he claims to show how the bloodlines of the royal, political, and economic rulers of today are the same as those who ruled as the kings and queens of ancient times.

Children of the Matrix.......2007-05-13
Extremely informative, as are all David Icke's Books. Holds your attention. Encourages you to pay closer attention as to what is going on all around you.
5 for the courage alone. Bravo Icke........2006-06-15
Some people prefer to look at Icke's claims as strickly metaphors (who wouldn't agree that the World's elite are reptilian snakes, evil, and shape-shifters based on their actions?) which is dead on and endlessly relevant - especially these days. And don't forget, Icke has been saying this stuff for almost 15 years, so over that time he has been disturbingly prophetic which just adds to his credibility. Fifteen years ago he could be dismissed as simply a ranting clown, now those of us who have some sort of clue that "things are amiss" are forced to re-evaluate his claims.
On the other hand, there are a growing number of people who prefer to take Icke's writing as totally literal, which obviously, is far too much for most sheeple to accept. The controlling elite with hybrid DNA who are able to shape shift into creatures that look like Reptiles and are somehow directed in their agenda by entities outside of our realm? Say again?! Well, the strange thing is, many other "elite" people have very similar views, who have no interest or connection with Icke. Very similar themes occur in various genres of literature over many hundreds of years. Why is this? Why are the elite so interested in human DNA? Why do we have the R-complex as part of our brains? Why is the story of human evolution (which is what my training orginally was in) so murky, corrupt and political? Why won't "Atlantis" go away (even Plato wrote about its existence in literal terms)? Why is quantum physics, holographic and string theories now providing framework for the existence of other dimensions and realms beyond our normal senses? Why don't we realize that we perceive with our 5 senses only 1% of the known light / sound spectrum (which is less than cats and dogs, by the way)? Why is the UFO community so convoluted and seemingly infiltrated? Why all the talk and "whistle-blowing" regarding underground caverns, bases, and even cities? I don't claim to know... One thing I do know is that prior to reading Icke, the events that endlessly unfold in the World seemed so mysterious, unrelated, random, pointless, maddening, disheartening, etc. But Icke's ideas really do de-mystify and explain a great many things that have occurred and continue to occur, albeit in a way that literally challenges you to redefine your reality. Unfortunately, post-Icke, the World appears to me more evil, maddening, and scary, which are themes that he tries to address and quell in his most recent works.
Never mind the typos in this book, it's Icke very controversial ideas (many of which are borrowed and pieced together) that are worth the price, metaphorical or not. And the ultimate value is discovering why you might have such visceral reactions to those ideas. In other words, it's a way of understanding the depth that you might be burried within the Matrix. But, I would suggest that there is a REASON why you read the book, or are reading this and contemplating buying it; follow your instincts not your conditioned knee-jerk reactions.
Terrible .......2006-05-30
Where do I begin ?
Icke has absolutely no idea what he's talking about in this book. He relentlessly mixes facts with fiction to create a rather disturbing cocktail of nonsense for the reader.
Does anyone honestly believe that reptillian beings actually exist in any form other than subconscious manifestations of serpent archetypes ? The fact that NO ONE has actually witnessed a reptillian being publicly speaks volumes about Icke's delusional psyche.
I get the feeling that Icke wrote this book to satisfy peoples curiosity and to feed them what they want to hear. This is Icke's MO as of the biggest secret - mix fact and fiction together to create fear and misdirection at the same time. All the while Icke pockets a princely sum for his overpriced "books" and phony "lectures".
I'm certainly not going to give Icke one penny for this diseased garbage. He should be ashamed of himself for writing such mindless unsupported rubbish.
Political/social dissent literature.......2006-05-06
If a fiction writer actually BELIEVES to be true the fiction he writes, does that free him to write a wilder, more detailed story? Icke proves that it does.
Conspiracy literature is the new literature of dissent. It's not difficult to deconstruct the mythology that Icke has pulled together. The world, he claims, is "secretly" controlled by shape-shifting reptiles who also happen to commit unspeakable crimes against children. Bush, Clinton, and the other world rulers are certainly "reptilian" in that they are cold-blooded men governed by their deeper animal instincts and desires, such as greed and bloodlust. They are "shape-shifters" because they are deceitful, liars, and they cannot be "pinned down" (as if Kerry is the only one who ever "flip-flopped" on an issue).
Our rulers are "snakes." Their policies are the moral equivalent of child molestation, because they starve, bomb, fail to educate, or otherwise oppress most of the world's children.
Icke's ideas (outrageous, of course, on the literal level) provide his readers with a mythology and meta-narrative of the world in an age when traditional mythologies and religions have crumbled. Some of you readers need to get a grip on yourselves. Read properly, David Icke can provide some fascinating LITERARY insights into the world we all live in.
(For some reason I can't edit my review, I can really only give this THREE STARS because of Dave's bad grammar and run-on sentences.)
Well it did cause icke to go on writing more books.......2006-03-17
did anyone who reviewed this book actually go and look at the bloodline connection, PLEASE!!!!! atleast if there are no reptilians then WTF do all the world leaders have to share their bloodline connections for???
icke does not appear to me to be perfect, i am not either, and i am not defending him, i have seen him defend himself on many occasions, but atleast he tries to put forward many extreme things, true or not, i think that icke deserves 4 stars, for interests sake.
oh yes for those wanting to know more about the illuminati / all seeing eye cult side of things, read the illuminatus trillogy by robert anton wilson and robert shea, wilson is a high recomendation of mine.
go icke and all who put forward their theories on the all seeing eye of lucifer.

A Great Read.......2007-08-04
This may be my favorite book. It's a beautiful, engaging story. Several friends and I read the book around the same time and all agreed that we hated to reach the end. If you just want to enjoy a great story, read this book.
A new point of view.......2007-07-28
This was a great book that told a story of a young boy who wanted to know why his mother didn't look like him. I really enjoyed reading this book, and I got an inside look at a bi-racial family.
A beautiful homage.......2007-07-16
I loved this book because it shows, in plain and clear terms, that a mother's love trascends everything. Even though the main focus of the book itself is on the mother's past and the circumstances that, for better or for worse, determined her life, and by extension the life of her children, what stuck with me the most is how very deeply loved this woman was by her children, which can only be a reflection of the devotion, love and sense of pride and purpose that she in turn instilled in them all while growing up, even in the face of bigotry.
Wonderful!.......2007-04-16
I loved this book, I could barely put it down until I finished. The story-telling is excellent and the vignettes are beautifully done. McBride's autobiography is just really good. His stories about his childhood and his mother's experiences crossing between cultures is a total page turner.
Find out what it was like as a mixed-race family growing up in 1960s New York. Find out what it was like living as a Jewish family in the 1930s Deep South. Enjoy!
The Color of Humanity.......2007-03-10
The book is beautifully written and has a lovely "message" which is not message-y or preachy at all. I am Jewish and maybe because I grew up in Washington DC in the 50's (which had a population predominantly African American) The Color of Water really spoke to me. In fact in many ways I felt he could have been describing my own mother for her beauty both physical and spiritual. However, I think this is a great story excellently told for anyone.

Order this book ... and please don't be put off by its pallid subtitle, A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother, which doesn't begin to do justice to the utterly unique and moving story contained within. The Color of Water tells the remarkable story of Ruth McBride Jordan, the two good men she married, and the 12 good children she raised. Jordan, born Rachel Shilsky, a Polish Jew, immigrated to America soon after birth; as an adult she moved to New York City, leaving her family and faith behind in Virginia. Jordan met and married a black man, making her isolation even more profound. The book is a success story, a testament to one woman's true heart, solid values, and indomitable will. Ruth Jordan battled not only racism but also poverty to raise her children and, despite being sorely tested, never wavered. In telling her story--along with her son's--The Color of Water addresses racial identity with compassion, insight, and realism. It is, in a word, inspiring, and you will finish it with unalloyed admiration for a flawed but remarkable individual. And, perhaps, a little more faith in us all.
Book Description
This is a book that will "make you proud to be a member of the human race," says Mirabella, and countless readers have already discovered its power. Written in remembrance of his Polish-born, Southern-raised Jewish mother-who married a black man and raised twelve children, all of whom completed college-The Color of Water is a classic of the memoir genre, a testament to love, and a truly American story.

If you like stereotypes..........2007-09-27
If you like reinforcing stereotypes, then James McBride's book is for you. Jews have big noses, they only care about money, and of course, his converted mother only finds love through Jesus. But let's move past that. A great mother? Perhaps her children would not have had to eat sugar as a meal or wake up at 3 am (when she came home from work with free food from her employer) to eat-- else they went hungry if she had the number of children that she and her could support. Perhaps living in a house where the dog's feces is kicked under the radiator is not an indication of a strong mother. How about when she pays one fare for the subway and puts herself and the twelve children through on that one fare. These are not virtues. The writing was weak; the message was weaker.
A Jewish Mother.......2007-09-24
Legal History of the Color Line: The Rise And Triumph of the One-drop Rule
A better title for this book would be: A Dark Mulatto's Tribute to His Jewish Mother. The word "black" denies the European Jewish ancestry of the author and his siblings and the word "white" denies his mother's ethnic heritage. Mrs. McBride's Jewish ethnic values were far more important to her children's success than being "white."
Parenthood Pride -- A Mother Must Whimper.......2007-08-13
"Times were different then." Something espoused by the author's mother -- a Polish Jew who grew up in the Jim Crow south before World War II, and then raced away from her self-described purgatory to New York -- where she embraced mixed union, poverty and Jesus Christ.
How people of mixed races could live without constant clamour and request for surrender is not known to the 21st century people -- I grew up with bussing and other issues, but never saw a segregated movie theater, water fountain, or seating area. We really don't know how far we have come. And, we don't know how hard the struggle of others has been.
And, to help us understand that path, we have James McBride's autobiography/biography -- in pica print is his tale and in italic (every other chapter) is his mother's biography written by her son or her autobiography as transcribed from her taped sittings with her son.
Some things which she lived with will astound you -- I refer not to the biracial issues, but to the classic violations of Judeo-Christian ethics by the author's grandfather. As a rabbi and devout conservative Jew, the author's grandfather, we learn, abused his spouse emotionally (if not physically), abused his daughter sexually, and abused the black man in the south for personal financial gain. Interestingly, all had the same achilles heel -- each was a weakened victim. The wife a victim of polio and contract marriage, the daughter a victim of youth, and the black people victims of unadulterated 1930's racism.
Emerging from this broiling escapade by the father came the flight of a young woman to New York (the author's mother) who raised 12 bi-racial children whose faces and hair told most strangers they were anything other than children of a conservative Jew who emigrated from Poland.
In the even-numbered paragraphs (those autobiographical passages of the author), I had laugh-out-loud episodes when he recited events of his naive youth when he asked questions about his race, about his mother's race and more. Like Frank McCourt, he delivers the lines in such accurate manner that you feel as though you are sitting back and watching kids in action doing their thing which we, as adults, can not well remember nor well imitate.
This was solid fun reading based upon an extremely unique factual content.
Very disappointing..........2007-07-18
I was very disappointed with this book, especially given so many positive reviews. Though I certainly admired McBride and his siblings' ability to achieve so much given so little, I was appalled and even morally offended by the sheer stupidity and negligence of his mother as she is described (apparently in her own words) throughout the book.
I think we the readers are so overwhelmed with empathy and admiration for 12 children rising out of poverty despite obstacles of racism, poor education, no support from extended family, etc., that we forget to ask the obvious question: why would any person raise 12 children in poverty in the first place?? How is this a good decision? A mother has no job and no discernable skills, and is married to what seems like a great man - wouldn't she think after the 4th kid that "maybe I should make sure I can provide for my first 4 children before I have a 5th..or a 12th?"! To me, this is morally reprehensible! And if that's not enough, the book is littered with negligent decision making while raising her 12 kids. For example, when she drives a car without a license, she seriously risks jail time (and bankrupcy/legal problems if she hits something/someone). What would happen to her kids then? I guarantee if this same woman with no license and 12 children ran into your car, you'd be thinking much different thoughts, the nicest being "what a complete moron"! She obviously must have been a good, strong, moral woman, but she was also lucky. For every 12 child family success story, there are probably 100 other abject failures.
If I went into the woods with no water and no food and no sense of direction, and I made it out alive after 10 days of on-the-verge-of-death adventure, you might be inspired by the luck/perseverence/moral fortitude...or you might just think "why did that moron go into the woods with no water, food, or sense of direction"? That's the way I felt about this book.
A Unique Perspective.......2007-07-14
I loved this man's view of his mother and her passions and struggles. He saw her imperfections but chose to focus elsewhere. In a world where so many are looking to blame others for their stations or place in this world, this son took the good that his mother offered and channeled it. I have always believed that one can either focus on the empty cup and rationalize why the cup cannot be filled, or go into the world and seek the fullness lacking. I love that God is the color of water since that is what I have always believed. My God is so colorless and my love of mankind is also based on a true belief that we're to focus outside ourselves and the world will be a better place. Naive one might say?? I say that it is only the truly brave that reach and expect the world to be a better place.
Book Description
Once again, in this expanded Second Edition, Gary Howard outlines what good teachers know, what they do, and how they embrace culturally responsive teaching. Howard brings his bestselling book completely up to date with today's school reform efforts and includes a new introduction and a new chapter that speak directly to current issues such as closing the achievement gap, and to recent legislation such as No Child Left Behind. With our nation's student population becoming ever more diverse, and teachers remaining largely White, this book is now more important than ever. A must-read in universities and school systems throughout the country, We Can't Teach What We Don't Know continues to facilitate and deepen the discussion of race and social justice in education.
Customer Reviews:
A useless book..........2007-09-14
The author spends half the book trying to establish (and burnish, in my opinion) his "Culturally Sensitive White Guy" credentials and the other half stating the freaking obvious. If you've ever lived in an area with more than one race, you'll get precious little from this book. On the other hand, if you're from northern Idaho, this might be just the ticket...
Reflections on We Can't Teach What We Don't Know: White Teachers, Multiracial Schools.......2007-03-29
I found this book settling in the midst of my own efforts to sort out and address issues of White priviledge and dominance.
Gray Howard shares his journey through the difficult world and work of multicultural understanding with humor and sensitivity. He identifies the unspoken truths about priviledge and dominance in western culture, in such a way that relieves the burden of guilt, allows for self-reflection, and maps a path for growth for White educators.
The book addresses three key themes: Recognizing and acknowledging the dynamics of dominance; defining the stages of racial identity transformation; and identifying the ways in which improving cultural sensitivity can postively impact the lives and education of all students.
Howard encourages White teachers to explore their own racial identities and move along the path towards a transformationist White identity that seeks and values diverse points of view, connects with one's own cultural roots, involves self and students in explorations of other cultures and perspectives, engages in social action, and continues to grow and change.
This is not a "How To" book with road map to change, it is more of a "Why to" book with a topograhical map to help you plan your journey. Having read this book, I am inspired to continue my travels. To seek more information and find ways to promote a more intentional multicultural focus in my school and community.
I recommend this book for those teachers (White and otherwise) who are interested in or have already embarked on their own journeys.
Info on multicultural education.......2007-02-14
This book is very informative. It gives new insight into how we as educators must refrain from the blame game and teach our students how to appreciate each of the individual cultures around the globe.
Also Useful for Teachers of Color.......2006-10-13
This book was a nice surprise as a pre-service teacher in education classes where the realities of white supremacy is not discussed, the first hand experiences of teachers of color are silenced, black/Latino or "at-risk multicultural" students are demonized, poor white kids are invisible and the issues of other groups are addressed superficially through "practical strategies"mandated by here today/ gone tomorrow popular scholars. This book gave me as an African American educator a space to see how whiteness functions in everyone's lives in the public school system. Each page helped me understand better why white people sometimes act in certain ways.
Thank you Gary Howard for the excellent analysis and methods for all teachers to use as they transform themselves and their schools.
great service.......2006-03-16
I recieved my book within 3 days by ordering on just the regular service.

Dead Men's Secrets - An Overlay.......2007-09-18
This book provides a pragmatic view of the history of mankind and makes it main points within the first ten chapters (albeit short chapters). A historical timeline of mankind's progress on page 38 or so, an assertion by the author, is something that can be easily overlooked or dismissed, but is well worth studying and thinking about.
With the idea that mankind is struggling back from it's glorious past, it is not hard to imagine that societal structures like the church, ruling families and elected gov'ts, can(and probably did) withhold information of a previous high civilization, so as to retain power or guide society in certain directions; and at least the author brought this idea out and put it to paper for us all to ponder.
P.S. After reading this book, I find myself looking extra carefully at museum artifacts and routinely dismiss archeology articles citing we were half wits, fumbling around in caves, me cold, me find mate...ugh ugh (this still happens today but only after 5 or 6 beers at the local pub!).
Dead Men's Secret's.......2007-08-10
This book is the most complete book I've read so far on out of place artifacts. I gave it 4 stars due to a few spelling errors but it covers the so called out of place artifacts the world over. However if you have an evolutionary world view this book will probably give you nightmares.
Book.......2007-05-27
It had a lot of interesting ideas and info, but with out much actual evidence it wasnt that great a read. There was really no detal to any of the items brought up.
gives no info.......2007-05-06
for a book on discoveries, it gives almost no information on them. it simply lists supposed discoveries. exactly where, exactly when, and by whom? who knows? this book doesn't tell you. it's a real disappointment.
Interesting -- but skims the surface.......2006-08-17
Interesting -- but skims the surface
This book is mostly brief references to historical anomalies and odd findings of past civilizations. The actual references for the sources of the book are lacking detail, which takes away credibility.
The majority of the book is complied as a few paragraphs at the beginning of a chapter followed by a list of items which are suppose to back up the authors contention that a civilization much greater in technology than our own once inhabited the Earth.
Time might better be spent reading "Ancient Man: A Handbook of Puzzling Artifacts" by Wm. Corliss or "The Hidden History of the Human Race" by Cremo and Thompson.
Overall entertaining if you are looking for light reading on the topic of historical anomalies.

NEW ORLEANS.......2007-01-26
This an interesting book, well researched and fascinating. I get very tired of reading in the national news that Creole means light skinned black, it really refers to the the original European natives on New Orleans the Spanish, then the French. New Orleans is of course a city with a huge black population and they are natives as well, and as such Creoles, I suppose, and many have white creole ancestors without question, but when I say that my grandmother was part Creole, people look at me as say, uh your black?..Im like, uh no, my grandmother is of French and Austrian ancestry, it's so annoying, people need to get educated on the word and this book helps. And for the record if your African American..Im European American..if your black..im white...and just because im of the caucasion persuasion does not make me void of color..i have color..im an olive tan..sort of a beautiful bronze actually.
Interesting Sociologic Commentary.......2006-02-22
The assorted articles contained in Creole New Orleans are generally well written and edited. With the recent dispersion of a large number of her citizens, this pre-Katrina study of the phenomena that made New Orleans unique in America is timely and fascinating.
OUTSTANDING!.......1999-01-15
Creole New Orleans is an excellent account of the shaping of the city of New Orleans, from its early days as a colonial city of the French and Spanish, through the modern city. The book focuses on the gradual americanization of the city and the implications this had for its residents, using the unique race relations in New Orleans as measuring stick.
The editors and co-authors Arnold Hirsch and Joseph Logsdon compiled a series of six essays, broken into three sections of the book. The first section focuses on colonial New Orleans, and the development of the French assimilationist ethos in the policies of French and Spanish Louisiana, especially with regards to slaves, free people of color, and native americans. Part Two deals with The American period. It traces the slow Americanization process of the city. It also explains how different groups, like the Foreign French helped, to stave off the rising tide of Americanization. And finally, Part Three focuses on New Orleans' black community. Attention is given to the rifts developing between Afro-Creoles and Afro-Americans and their struggles over Reconstruction. And it ends with New Orleans in the twentieth century. They explain how the Creole protest tradition in New Orleans was continued in the modern political and social arenas.
This book was extremely informative and thoroughly researched. It did a marvelous job of explaining why New Orleans, often thought to be an exotic and un-American city, is in fact, extremely American. The authors are able to give a convincing account about how the city of New Orleans, through its unique development, has maintained its heritage while adapting to the ways of the rest of the United States. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in American History, Black History, or Louisiana History.

Book Description
This is one volume in a high-impact series for experiencing the transforming power of God's Word in the context of community. 6 SESSIONS
Book Description
Originally a derogatory label derived from the Hawaiian word for half, Hapa is now being embraced as a term of pride by many people of Asian or Pacific Rim mixed-race heritage. Award-winning film producer and artist Kip Fulbeck has created a forum in word and image for Hapas to answer the question they're nearly always asked: "What are you?" Fulbeck's frank, head-on portraits are paired with the sitters' own statements of identity. A work of intimacy, beauty, and powerful self-expression, Part Asian, 100% Hapa is the book Fulbeck says he wishes he had growing up. An introduction to the rest of the world and an affirmation for Hapas themselves who now number in the millions it offers a new perspective on a rapidly growing population.

Simple yet profound........2007-07-14
My wife and I discovered this book in a cafe during our visit to the Big Island, Hawaii and immediately fell in love with the book. A wonderful portrait of mixed races with simple photographic portraits.
No longer half, but whole.......2007-06-09
Kip Fulbeck has created a community for those of us who identify ourselves as wholly members of our communities, but who are often not perceived by others as fully included. We are the exotic, the other, the mixed -- the products of the melting pot. We are as different from one another, as alike, as complex, as unique, as are other people of other backgrounds -- which is to say, as much as is true for anyone (of any ethnic heritage), we hapa can not be defined by our ethnic heritage, nor can we dismiss the great influence our varied heritage has exerted on our personal identities. It is lovely to have these truths acknowledged. Thank you, Kip Fulbeck. This work of art has been carefully crafted, and is deeply meaningful. While some of the references -- visual and otherwise -- may not be fully understood by those who have not experienced life as a hapa, or as a hapa of a particular generation, nevertheless I think that everyone will discover something new and beautiful within these pages. This is a rare gem. Not to be missed!
Americans All.......2007-05-20
A perfect example of one picture being worth a thousand words but the few words of copy are also very good.
I am Hapa and so are my Kids... we are Hapa HAWAIIAN.......2007-05-15
I am 100% Hapa, i was born and raised in Hawaii and i am very familar with the term and pleased to see it making its way into mainstream culture. I bought this book as a fathers day gift for my husband who is always asking why our first son looks nothings like him (he is Irish) and i am Hawaiian-Irish-Portugese.
I only wish that the title of the book was more inclusive of Hawaiian and Pacific islanders who are also Hapa and originated the term.
Wonderful Author, Great Idea.......2007-05-12
I heard Kip speak in 2003 at Grand Valley State University in Michigan. At the time he was selling his book, Paper Bullets, which I highly recommend. I value my autographed copy. Today he was on CNN promoting this book and it's truly worth the money. My only wish was that CNN had discussed his credentials or even allowed him to read a bit from one of his books. Kip is intelligent, engaging, real, and a person who illuminates a room. I'm marrying an Asian American man and our children will be Hapa. I'm forever thankful to Kip for his books.
This is a must read, as is Paper Bullets.
Book Description
This is the story of how America awakened to its race problem, of how a nation that longed for unity after World War II came instead to see, hear, and learn about the shocking indignities and injustices of racial segregation in the South—and the brutality used to enforce it.
It is the story of how the nation’s press, after decades of ignoring the problem, came to recognize the importance of the civil rights struggle and turn it into the most significant domestic news event of the twentieth century.
Drawing on private correspondence, notes from secret meetings, unpublished articles, and interviews, veteran journalists Gene Roberts and Hank Klibanoff go behind the headlines and datelines to show how a dedicated cadre of newsmen—first black reporters, then liberal southern editors, then reporters and photographers from the national press and the broadcast media—revealed to a nation its most shameful shortcomings and propelled its citizens to act.
We watch the black press move bravely into the front row of the confrontation, only to be attacked and kept away from the action. Following the Supreme Court’s 1954 decision striking down school segregation and the South’s mobilization against it, we see a growing number of white reporters venture South to cover the Emmett Till murder trial, the Montgomery bus boycott, and the integration of the University of Alabama.
We witness some southern editors joining the call for massive resistance and working with segregationist organizations to thwart compliance. But we also see a handful of other southern editors write forcefully and daringly for obedience to federal mandates, signaling to the nation that moderate forces were prepared to push the region into the mainstream.
The pace quickens in Little Rock, where reporters test the boundaries of journalistic integrity, then gain momentum as they cover shuttered schools in Virginia, sit-ins in North Carolina, mob-led riots in Mississippi, Freedom Ride buses being set afire, fire hoses and dogs in Birmingham, and long, tense marches through the rural South.
For many journalists, the conditions they found, the fear they felt, and the violence they saw were transforming. Their growing disgust matched the mounting countrywide outrage as The New York Times, Newsweek, NBC News, and other major news organizations, many of them headed by southerners, turned a regional story into a national drama.
Meticulously researched and vividly rendered, The Race Beat is an unprecedented account of one of the most volatile periods in our nation’s history, as told by those who covered it.

Unique view of that time in our history.......2007-10-05
The Civil Rights Movement of the `50s and `60s was a significant and well-known period of American history. But have you ever thought about why it is so well known, or even why it had so much success?
The Race Beat is a story, not only of the well-known players of the Civil Rights Movement, but also the men who covered it in the media. These men poured their hearts and souls into covering the stories that would make the people of the United States stand up and take notice of the injustices being done in the name of "separate but equal," "justice," and "liberty." Many of these men had battled against Hitler over his racial elitism. Once they came home, they were quick to jump into the front lines of our own battle for racial equality before we descended into the depravity that Hitler is known for.
This is a fascinating insider's look at how the civil rights battle was brought to the forefront of the United States' attention. Blending well-known events with the stories of the men who were there writing about it, you get a whole new perspective of what these men were feeling and fighting for. Not just as outside observers, but compatriots.
This book is well written and well researched, but it is slow to start. I picked it up expecting the jump into the civil rights movement, but found myself in the `40s as they laid the groundwork for what the journalists were to become. It is also heavily journalist-centric. That is to say, there are references the non-journalists among us won't understand. But all in all, it is a great read.
Armchair Interviews says: If you are looking for a new perspective on the civil rights movement, this book is for you.
The Race Beat.......2007-06-27
A very good review of how the Civil Rights movement was covered and influenced by news media.
Absorbing and instructive.......2007-04-27
I have read a lot on the civil rights struggle, including Taylor Branch's trilogy, and Simple Justice, by Richard Kluger, and have appreciated all the reading I have done on that momentous struggle. But this account of how newspapers and television chronicled the exciting events told me a lot I did not know or had not remembered. The book is carefully footnoted and has a 26 page bibliography, in addition to the footnotes (thus avoiding the unfortunate lapse of some books which are well-footnoted but omit a bibliography). The book not only tells of newsmen and media sometimes going to great, even heroic lengths, to tell the story of the events in the clash between aspring blacks and the status quo, but also tells of the media which sought to uphold segregation. As with other books on the struggle, when one is appalled by the violence and murders which marked the history, it is some comfort to realize that in the end right triumphs. This book is an astoundingly interesting survey of an important aspect of the civil rights efforts of the 1950s and 1960s.
Winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for History.......2007-04-17
Outstanding effort by legendary editor Gene Roberts, widely admired for turning around the Philadelphia Inquirer in the 1980s and leading it to multiple prizes in journalism, revisits, with co-author Hank Klibanoff, managing editor of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, both their own work in civil rights reporting and the work of colleagues to pen this precise and most interesting study of what journalists were and weren't doing when segregation was legal in the U.S.
Highly readable and fascinating history.
