The first half of the book includes an easy-to-use tabular method for evaluating a boat's suitability for cruising; ideas for workable deck and interior lay-outs and organization; how to choose and configure suitable boat systems for cruising; and how to install gear for trouble free operation.
The book's second half teaches you boat handling skills; core navigational expertise; anchoring techniques; weather understanding; heavy weather expertise; and specific skills for long-term and long-distance cruising.

Gotta Get It!.......2007-07-16
My husband and I currently own a CS30 that we race and cruise on the Chesapeake Bay. We have been seriously considering moving up to a 37-40 ft cruiser. We bought this book (among several others) to prepare for cruising. It is fantastic. He covers every topic imaginable in an easy to digest format. It is a resource you don't want to be without!
A must have for sailing cruisers.......2007-01-22
I wish I had bought this book before I bought my newest old boat - my personal survey would have been much more effective.
This book covers so much, so well. Mr. Calder obviously not only has the knowledge but the motivation to really think about what should go into each area. He covers choosing, maintaining, upgrading, and cruising a boat to just the right degree that if you had no other resources, this book would usually suffice. And he does this in such a relatively small book.
mostly about calder's boat.......2006-12-11
this is book about cruising in a sailboat but is mostly filled with pictures and references to his sailboat and what a great boat it is. i wanted a book about cruising after you have a boat.
Good manual and info on sailing.......2006-12-11
Well thought out and good graphics/photos. Solid marine related information and guide. A good book for the sail oriented seamen.
The Cruising Handbook is the reference manual to have.......2006-10-29
For cruising, Nigel Calder's book is the one that offers the most good information about a variety of cruising-related subjects. If I had to choose to keep only couple of books for boating, it would be this and Chapman's Piloting and Seamanship. This Cruising Handbook is especially geared for sailboats and covers all boat systems and the issues you are likely to encounter.

Best resource of its kind.......2007-04-10
If you're looking for a one-volume price guide -- this is the one. Period. Forget about Beckett.
Super Catalog of Baseball Cards.......2007-02-15
An excellent and quite comprehenwive listing of baseball cards and their values. In fact there is only one set I know of, reviewed by Mr. Lemke a year ago in Sports Collectors Digest, that was not included in the catalog. Still, I would recommend it most highly.
Not all cards are listed, pages were out of order.......2007-02-10
The book is better than most, of course, but it doesn't list many cards. For example, in the 2005 issue, there were cards listed, but in the 2007 issue, those cards were removed for some reason. Plus, in my initial issue, the pages were out of order in about 100 page increments. Thank goodness Amazon replaced it for me and the second issue was correctly paged.
Disappointment .......2007-01-19
I ordered this for my baseball card collecting husband and am very disappointed because the pages are not in order. There is a very large section of pages out of sequence. It makes it very difficult for my husband to rate and price his cards. I would love to return this defective book for a correct one! Then perhaps my confidence in ordering through Amazon would be restored.
Thank you!
Regina Bartels
About as good as I see out there..........2007-01-10
The 2007 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards has the greatest breadth of any of the baseball card valuations that I've seen on the market, including Becketts. It gives approximate worth for diverse cards in Near Mint, Excellent and Very Good condition, and includes quite a range of cards from the old tobacco cards to card brands that are yet existent. There are numerous items that I'd never heard of, but have stumbled upon, and this catalog has helped 'ballpark' their worth. That being said, there are cards that I have not found within the catalog, but this has been a relatively rare occurence and has not significantly impacted my pursuance of this hobby. There is some occasional disagreement with Beckett's, which perhaps reflects a degree of relativity in value/pricing issues for cards considered by such books, but its diversity of information and almost biblical visage are impressive!

What a great read!.......2007-07-25
I took it on vacation with me and I couldn't put it down. A great book for aspiring athletes and coaches as well as your average Joe who works 9-5. The coaches discuss a variety of topics from their childhood to how they motivate their players. Any easy read for all ages.
Game of life.......2007-07-24
I've read through Game of Life and I enjoyed it very much. There are so many things to take from this book, not just into sports, but also some reflections on life. I would recommend this book to everybody.
Coaching advise from athletic coaches.......2007-06-27
A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.
Overcome Adversity.......2007-04-12
Anyone looking for inspiration, either for their own life or to share with others, will find a gold mine of quotes here. This book isn't just for sports fans.

Good Sound Stuff.......2007-09-25
Useful ideas and tips giving a good grounding in bombproofing your horse. Lots of common sense stuff.
Easy Step-byStep Approach.......2007-05-15
I've actually been training despooking clinics for a few years now. However, my girlfriend recommended this book as another guide to help out. Read the book, and loved it. Simply laid out, with step-by-step approaches for many, many circumstances both on horseback, and on the ground. Straight forward and easily understood. I would definately recommend it to almost anyone interested in training their horse.
Knowledgeable practical advice.......2007-03-09
I found this book to be very practical and helpful. The author, having trained police horses, is very knowledgeable on the topic, and the exercises are clearly laid out with straightforward advice. He included general techniques for training as well as specific exercises for different spooky situations and discussed his philosophy on training while understanding horse's natural instincts. There was a big emphasis on safety for both the horse and rider while working through scary lessons. The information in this book would be applicable to riders in all disciplines. I highly recommend it.
Wasn't greatly impressed with the book/since I'm not a beginner.......2007-01-11
The book was ok but alot of stuff I was already doing with my horses. I would recommend it to someone who is just starting to learn how to despook horses.
Excellent Ideas for Improving a Spooky Horse.......2007-01-09
Easy to follow suggestions make this book a winner. Highly recommended!
Customer Reviews:
A lot of mud slinging........1999-11-10
I found the book to provide an interesting history on collecting from early times to present. After the history lesson is over, William's seems to spend an inordinate amount of time dwelling on the various misdeeds of Upper Deck President Richie McWilliam. McWilliam has a very strong (and negative) reputation that is well understood within the industry. Why spend half a book telling everyone that he is dishonest, a liar and a cheat when it is already well understood?
Fascinating look at the sports collectables industry.......1999-01-14
The "Barbarians at the Gate" of the baseball card industry. Fascinating, yet creepy, to see from the inside how a child's hobby has been exploited by sleazy characters. Will definitely turn you off collecting new cards as an investment.
Well written book that is a must reading for card collectors.......1998-11-18
I enjoyed this book very much. It has two themes: first, it shows how one company with the right idea and the right people behind it can revolutionize an entire industry, against all odds. Second, it tells us that to succeed in today's competitive markets you have to elbow your way in. While the allegations of wrongdoings by trading card companies seem like unsubstantiated hearsay, the book does make you feel that you are on the inside, witnessing how the real entrepreneurs do it. Very entertaining read.
Well written book for the money.......1996-05-31
I feel any person who is in the hobby of collecting cards or thinking about getting in the hobby should read this book
I found it interesting some of the aligations of conterfiting ones own cards interesting. Some people would be shocked to know
why there cards have no value.

Great Self-Defense Manual for Kids.......2007-01-10
If you are looking for a book to help kids understand the basics of self-defense, this one works. I use this in our own martial arts school as a supplemental reading source for your youth programs. It's also great for workshops, or simply to share with a child for individual reading. The concepts are well explained with text and pictures, and the techinques demonstrated are simple to learn and execute.
GREAT BOOK.......2004-01-08
From Jack Pistella.
Having been involved in the Martial Arts for over 25 years and an instructor since 1984, I have had the opportunity to read many books on self-defense. What impressed most about your book is you have deleted the useless material that is included in most other books. The book is clear, concise and easy to read, especially to children. The detailed photographs also make it understandable for children who cannot yet read.
Book Description
How much influence does an NFL head coach really have on a team’s win-loss record? Is the head coach the most important member of a professional football team? What separates a great coach from an average coach? Author Brad Adler answers these questions and many others in the first book ever to examine the magnitude of a head coach’s impact on an NFL franchise.
Coaching Matters contends that great coaches will win regardless of the talent or conditions that surround them. Superior coaches will be successful despite the incompetence of the players or the losing atmosphere they inherit. Adler shows that the elite head coach, in and of himself, is capable of producing and sustaining victory.
The title has a dual meaning. First, that coaching does indeed matter—much more than people believe. And second, Adler investigates how “coaching matters” are handled. He documents the careers of ten of the greatest modern-day NFL coaches and clearly establishes each man’s significance relative to his team’s success. The book examines the philosophies and tactics that helped distinguish each coach as a preeminent leader and innovator. It also analyzes how they conveyed their strategies and techniques and discusses the problems with filling the dual roles of coach and general manager.
Finally, Adler identifies and evaluates the personality traits and characteristics most often associated with outstanding coaches in an effort to establish a reliable basis for implementing the systematic “coach-predictor,” a method for gauging the effectiveness of potential NFL head coaches. Coaching Matters: Leadership and Tactics of the NFL'S Ten Greatest Coaches is the definitive book on NFL coaching and a must-read for any football fan.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book on NFL Coaches and Their Success.......2006-02-01
Brad Adler has done a great service by taking the time to painstakingly research and describe what separates the all-time great NFL coaches of the modern era from their mediocre colleagues. His chapters on each of the 10 selected coaches are detailed with care and each selection is justified well. The best part of the book, in my opinion, is the manner in which Adler explains how certain personality traits seem to make all the difference in the world (e.g. between mediocre team records and winning Super Bowls): he outlines the need for physical and/or psychological "intimidation" to instill a sense of purpose in the players which is supported by appropriate fear of being humiliated or cut from the team if they do not do their jobs. Simply being a successful coordinator or knowing the strategic x's and o's is not nearly enough! I loved the summary chapter in which he pulls his conclusions together and states his case definitively. I am a psychologist and executive coach by training, and I learned quite a bit from this book. I highly recommend it!
Wow, a great in-depth look at football's greatest coaches!.......2003-10-06
I went into this expecting just a long opinion piece, but wow does this book rock! He's got stats, facts, and yes opinions. But it gets all put together into a great, great read on the ten best coaches (says Adler) of the NFL since the 1950s.
He doesn't just pick them out of thin air either; he takes a look at what defines success in football and comes up with a set of parameters that the coaches must all meet. There are a couple additions based on extenuating circumstances, but I think he explains that well.
A great look at football coaches, including two that are still active -- Parcells and Holmgren. Get it!
Had to add this edit -- with Joe Gibbs one of the coaches profiled, this book is GREAT to show you just how awesome a coach he is and look at back his first career as he tries to bring the Redskins back to success.

Talking Trash, Trading Studs, and Drafting Sleepers -- an Insider's Guide to the World's Greatest Obsession
U.S. businesses lose $200 million in productivity each football season because employees are managing their fantasy squads instead of working.
In Why Fantasy Football Matters (And Our Lives Do Not), two grizzled veterans revel in the addiction that is fantasy football. From pre-draft hijinx to post-draft trash talk, from tumultuous trades to the perils of free agency, it celebrates the eccentric personalities, absurd rituals, and hilarious superstitions of one of the most fanatical fantasy leagues on earth.
With humor, insight, and a dash of advice, Why Fantasy Football Matters celebrates the thirty-two million Americans who prefer managing their fantasy squads to relaxing with loved ones. And it gives girlfriends, coworkers, and sports purists all the proof they need to accept that this is an obsession that really matters.
Customer Reviews:
An exciting look into a fantasy league season.......2007-08-26
Fantasy football is about having fun and humiliating your friends and colleagues at the same time. This book captures that mentality perfectly.
There have been other books where the history of fantasy sports are explored, journeys are made to interview fantasy luminaries, etc. Not here. This is the story of a fantasy football season from start to finish. The participants are all regular joes, and they do what most fantasy owners do. There is talk about the psychology of drafting, trade offers, in-season trash talking, and many other things that make fantasy sports worth playing. I felt like they were telling the story of my league.
Barmack and Handelman do a great job of writing. The book never becomes mundane or boring. The writing is witty, and the different aspects of the fantasy season are presented in all of their glory. Each owner has a distinct personality. Even though they are each labeled as a specific fantasy sports archetype, the authors do a good job of keeping them relatable and human instead of becoming caricatures.
My only complaint is the many Top 10 lists in this book. They often don't even relate to the content. It feels like filler inserted to make sure this book achieved a respectable page count. That's a minor quibble. The reader can easily avoid these.
This is a great book for fantasy sports lovers and those who tolerate them.
Painfully acurate.......2007-01-11
This book really makes you take a step back and examine your addiction to Fantasy Football. It is a must read for wives that just don't get the importance.
Why Fantasy Football matters............2007-01-09
Hilarious!! I actually bought this book as a kind of a joke for my husband who lives for his Fantasy League during football season..... But as I was sitting around one day, I started to read it and found it totally entertaining, a great read for the Fantasy Football players and their football widow wives as well.
Football `Widow no more.......2006-08-31
This book by Max Handelman and Erik Barmack is hilarious! They give a great insider's view of what happens to ordinary people who have a serious obsession!! It's a great book for everyone to read because it's easily followed even if you have no clue what Fantasy Football is! I loved it and have shared it with friends who love and despise the game for various reasons! If you're a Sunday widow you should read this book and if you're a participant of this league, you should consider therapy! (when the season ends, of course). Have fun reading this funny tale of crazed wannabe's!
highly enjoyable read.......2006-08-21
I was hoping these guys would capture all the things that are so enjoyably absurd about fantasy football and after reading I can happily say they've done exactly that. The chapter on post-draft reactions was great (The Helter Skelter Reaction: Manger in four different fantasy leagues who can't remember which players are on which teams) as are the side bars throughout, guys we like in sportsbars, a prayer for torn ACL's, top five quarterbacks quickest to hook-slide, and anatomy of a guppy draft were all great.
It's a fun read. If you play fantasy football you are going to dig it.
