I was thrilled to see a book that teaches children about the value of money. It is extremely well written and the colorful illustrations kept my three year old nephew wanting to read more and more the book.

5 out of 5 stars Money Mama to the Rescue!.......2004-01-17

Money Mama and her three little piggies make the concept of saving as easy as 10/10/10/70! This great little book is beautifully designed, well-written and features bold, colorful illustrations that will immediately appeal to children AND parents alike.

My daughter, like most children, learned her bad spending and non-existent saving habits from her parents, (who learned their bad spending and non-existent saving habits from THEIR parents.) It's a destructive cycle that needed breaking, but I wasn't sure how to do it. Enter: "Money Mama & The Three Little Pigs". I learned about this excellent book (and companion piggy bank) from a friend (who showed me HERS!) I was so captivated by the simplicity with which the daunting subjects of "giving", "investing", and "saving" were communicated, that I HAD to buy a copy for myself and my daughter. By breaking the process down into bite-sized pieces, I learned that anyone can benefit from the lessons taught in the book -- no matter how large or small the amount of money, success can begin with one little dollar.

I highly recommend this book to everyone who has kids and struggles with the subject of saving! You're never too old to learn the invaluable lessons outlined in the book, and I give Ms. Mackey two thumbs WAY up for her ingenous and innovative presentation of a complex subject. This is the gift that keeps on giving (and saving and investing) -- I'm glad I got mine before they ran out! :-)

Book Description

Relationship expert Regena Thomashauer teaches the lost "womanly arts" of identifying your desires, having fun no matter where you are, knowing sensual pleasure, befriending your inner bitch, flirting (in a way that makes your day, not just his), and more -- because making pleasure your priority can actually help you reach your goals. So if you need a refresher course in fun -- and you know you do -- come to Mama.

Download Description

"The irrepressible founder of a hugely popular ""school for goddesses"" shows you how celebrating your sensuality can help you achieve your dreams. You've heard the saying ""Do what you love, and the money will follow."" Mama Gena takes that sentiment one step further, and exhorts women to do what they love because everything will follow -- success, romance, wealth, fulfillment. Profiled everywhere from The New York Times to The Conan O'Brien Show, relationship expert Regena Thomashauer (a.k.a. Mama Gena) urges women to learn this simple principle: self-indulgence is the key to self-empowerment. But in order to pursue pleasure, one must know pleasure. Believe it or not, most women can't pinpoint what really makes them happy. After all, are women ever taught to celebrate their appetites, whether it's for chocolate ice cream or a more entertaining sex life? In her ""School of Womanly Arts,"" Mama Gena transforms ordinary women into glowing Sister Goddesses -- women fully in tune with the mystical, creative power of their sensuality -- and teaches them how to use their creative power to build the life they want. She explains the lost art of giving in to desires (even if it's just for a new lipstick), seeking fun and plea-sure at home and at work, and navigating the world using feminine power instead of patriarchal rules. This is pleasure boot camp, and be forewarned, the exercises are tough: assignments include flirting for fun, flexing your intuition, buying yourself presents, bragging about your accomplishments, and much more. Sister Goddesses report magical results: they get job offers, fall in love, find new possibilities and passions. Mama Gena's School of Womanly Arts will help readers across the country recognize and unleash their full feminine potential -- and have a great time doing it.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic on Man/Woman Relationships and Pleasure.......2007-08-29

I love Moma Gena's attitudes about having more fun and pleasure for both the man and the woman. What happens outside the bedroom clearly translates into the bedroom. This book is one of my favorites!

5 out of 5 stars Changed my life.......2007-08-28

I didn't know what to expect when I read this book, but I heard Christine Northrup mention it in her recent talk and decided to check it out. I wish I had this book when I was twenty, it would have saved me a lot of tears over lost loves-and guilt when it comes to dating several men. But its never too late to read this.. Almost 30 years later I'm learning what every mother should be teaching their daughters. Mama Gena gives out exercises-some aren't surprising, but one in particular was well worth buying the book-she refers to it as Bitte et Chat and it really changes the way the world responds to you..Her book gave me the courage to asked a guy to dinner-something I was taught never to do-he was pretty surprised as we had formally talked for months. His first personal question to me was "What do you like to do for fun" after reading her book I now recognize the significance of his question and now know this guy has potential.

5 out of 5 stars A warm and wonderful book.......2007-08-23

The world can be cold, but Mama Gena is warm. Her book is like a cup of hot chocolate and and injection of womanly wisdom from a grand eccentric aunt. This is a little treasure.

The board book version of this popular recitation of animal characteristics is equally as delightful as other editions, with one key improvement: it's inedible. This robust reissue follows lovable Lloyd the llama on his quest to find out what percentage of the baby animal population has llamas for mamas. The rhymes are original and infectious, and the riddles are sure to have children shouting out the answers in anticipation of turning the page.

Youngsters often exhibit an insatiable appetite for adorable baby animals, and Is Your Mama a Llama provides plenty of fodder for fawning. Illustrator Steven Kellogg, however, manages to keep the pictures sweet without being saccharine. And rest assured, no matter how often your little one is compelled to kiss the critters, the sturdy board-book format will stand the test of time (and of course, slobber). (Ages 0 to 4)

5 out of 5 stars Fun to read and our kids love it.......2007-08-23

This is the third time we've bought this book (1 for each kid). The earlier two copies were worn out. That's how much they like it.

5 out of 5 stars Love Lloyd the Llama.......2007-07-17

This is a wonderful book. It is a lot of fun to read aloud and has great rhymes. The pauses allow the child to fill in the end of the sentence (which is a rhyme). I read it in the classroom and my infant loves it as well!

5 out of 5 stars Love this book! .......2007-07-13

Great book! Teaches about animals. Flows very well and fun to read aloud. Illustrations are not that colorful or clear for very young toddlers. But I still like them because they are different and gives the book character. It took my 15 month old toddler a few times to start liking this book. But now she loves it and sometimes brings it to me to read to her.

5 out of 5 stars I know it by heart.......2007-06-25

A friend of my parents gave me this book as a baby shower gift because her son loved it, and after continuously putting away outgrown clothes and toys over the past year, this book has outlasted every other gift!

I've been reading this to my son almost every night since he was born, and he gets a huge grin on his face as soon as I read the first sentence: "Is your mama a llama?" The story follows a little llama as he asks each of his animal friends this question. The rhyming is creative but has an easy flow as you read, which makes it good for keeping a little one's attention as well as for learning how rhyming works as they get older. The illustrations are colorful and detailed (not just outlines). My son always reached up to touch the orange "sun" that appears on several pages, so I kept telling him what it was, and now that he's older he will touch it if I ask where the sun is. I can see that this will be a good book to "grow into" as I read the description of an animal and he can "guess" what it is before I turn the page.

This book is a very special part of our bedtime ritual. At this rate we'll wear it out before the next child comes, but I definitely plan to buy another copy!

5 out of 5 stars Great little book!.......2007-04-11

We have kind of a family in-joke about llamas, so when I saw this book, I had to get it for our daughter. Since then, I'm so glad I did! She loves it, and I love reading it to her...the rhyme and rhythym are excellent, and the illustrations are classy and amusing. I love all the different animals, and the introduction to the different behaviors.
My daughter is one now, and she still enjoys this book; I imagine she will for years to come.

"I loved my mom very much. I also hated her." The confusion and pain experienced by daughters of alcoholic mothers remains a somewhat taboo subject, but is thoroughly explored in this fascinating and inspiring book by Eleanor Agnew and Sharon Robideaux. The two authors come from entirely different backgrounds: one is the daughter of an educated East Coast professional family; the other, from a family of poverty-stricken, uneducated Southerners. What they have in common is their childhood with alcoholic mothers, their consequent suffering of mental and physical abuse, and their struggle with the need to protect, keep secrets, and survive. Agnew and Robideaux gathered the stories in My Mama's Waltz from more than 200 other daughters of alcoholic mothers, and the book brings with it the force of truth in numbers. Though all the tales in this compassionate and important book ring with clarity, it is the personal stories of Agnew and Robideaux that most strongly resonate with anguish, and, eventually, hope. --Ericka Lutz

Book Description

We spent our childhoods and teen years waltzing psychologically with our alcoholic mothers, fearfully taking whatever symbolic steps were necessary to keep from accidentally stepping on their toes....

With stunning honesty, My Mama's Waltz brings to light the painful legacy of daughters of alcoholic mothers -- in the first book to focus solely on this fractured relationship. Eleanor Agnew and Sharon Robideaux share their own personal accounts along with the memories and experiences of hundreds of women, from all ages and backgrounds, in an intimate and powerful narrative journey. Individually, their voices are courageous and unforgettable; together, they rise in a resounding chorus of support and compassion, confirming that women who deal with the remnants of a childhood cut short by an alcoholic mother are not alone.

The outpouring of emotion expressed in My Mama's Waltz reflects how daughters, more so than sons, are forced to tend to a drunken mother, care for younger siblings, and endure a mother's abuse or abandonment. We may see ourselves or women close to us in the common outlooks, the obstacles and personal difficulties faced by adult daughters, or in the wellspring of conflicted emotion released by an alcoholic mother's death. We may recognize the shattered mother-daughter dynamic whose grip is felt into adulthood, or relate to the childhood fantasy, never completely lost, to have come from a "perfect" family.

But through these common bonds come hope, understanding, and the ability to reconcile the past. Ultimately, My Mama's Waltz offers tremendous emotional support to those wishing to overcome the alcoholic mother's destructive influences and create a happy, fulfilled life. The brave women heard here affirm that the pain can be healed...and a daughter's heart made whole at last.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best book I have found.......2006-03-24

As an adult daughter of an alcoholic mother, I have read several ACoA books but never really found anything that spoke to me like My Mama's Waltz did. I was amazed at how many issues stem from growing up with an alcoholic mother. It was so comforting to read others' experiences and know that I'm not crazy and other women are going thru the same things. This book is a gem and I have recommended it to my three sisters and a girlfriend. So far, everyone has loved it as much as I did. If you are an adult daughter of an alcoholic mother you have to read this book!!!

5 out of 5 stars Healing words.......2004-07-16

I have not even finished this book yet, but already I feel like I'm healing. My mother was an alcoholic (now dry), her mother was an alcoholic, and I used to drink heavily myself. It's shedding light on some of my tendencies (trying to bend over backwards to please everyone, feeling abandoned by my mom at times, and so on). It also explains to me some of her behaviors and why she has anger lingering in her life and how it affects her still. Very insightful.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-06-26

My mother was not an alcoholic, but her mother was. I helped me to understand my mother so much better and how being raised by an alcoholic effected her life. As a person in recovery 7 yrs and now a mom, this book solidified my sobriety to see what a burden an alcoholic mother can be to a child. Thank You.

5 out of 5 stars It WAS Real..........2002-06-09

It WAS Real. The things you experienced with your alcoholic mother WERE real.

Other people have been through the same horror, guilt, and despair. I found this book very comforting.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source of support!!.......2000-10-19

I really enjoyed hearing other stories of daughters of alcoholic mothers. It aided in my therapy because it helped me remember events that I was having a hard time remembering. I found that my situation was much like others. Therefore, I didn't feel so alone. I highly recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for any mom.......2002-02-11

I was surprised to learn that there aren't more books of this type available for black mothers. But this book may be the only reference guide you need! A very easy read, and so full of useful information that I read it chunks at a time! The historical information is invaluable too. This would make a great gift for a special mom-to-be.

2 out of 5 stars OK, but not what I expected.......2002-01-19

I have learned just as much from "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and could really have done without the African names/meanings and tips on how to use kente cloth in a nursery. "WHat To Expect..." is much more thorough, although a lot of the information overlaps. The pictures in "Mama's Little Baby" are great, but not sure that you'll really learn how to bathe a baby based on these pictures...Get "what To Expect" and save the money...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Pregnancy for Black Perspectives.......2001-08-02

This is an excellent book for Pregnant woman from a Black perspective. From the interesting history side stories to the added stories of black woman any black woman will find this useful throughout their pregnancy and through the first few months with baby.

Key things I liked, the section on single moms, down to earth section on going back to work, negotiating leave, creating a budget for the new baby in your life, baby names, and 100% accurate medical information. Paritically on the choices for childbirth, from birthing centers to hospitals and the medications you available now.

This a great book I will keep in my reference for my second child.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for The Black Family.......2000-05-30

My wife & I had our first child 15 months ago. We find ourselves referring to this book on many different occasion. From what to do when the baby gets an ear infection to what to expect when weaning baby off of the bottle. A must buy, trust me, you will be glad you did!

4 out of 5 stars a must read for african american women.......1998-12-24

This book offers information needed for pregnant women but it specifically relates to the african american woman's needs. You can relate to the stories told by these women. The pictures are wonderful. mostly it prepares the woman for what to expect during each month of her pregnancy and birth. Highly recommended.

Book Description

Penelope Casas, the foremost American authority on Spanish food and the author of the bestselling Tapas, presents more than 175 robustly flavored yet amazingly simple recipes representing the best of Spanish home cooking—the cooking handed down through generations of Spanish “mamás.”

Long overshadowed by France and Italy, Spain has finally taken its rightful place as one of Europe’s great culinary meccas. Consider the reborn cities of Madrid, Barcelona, and Bilbao; the new respect afforded Spanish wines; the popularity of tapas bars in the U.S.; and Spain’s widely influential Michelin three-star chefs, Ferran Adrià and Juan Mari Arzak. Despite the world-wide acclaim for these chefs, arguably the greatest Spanish food is found not in the nation’s restaurants, but in private homes off-limits to tourists, where women still cook the recipes their mothers and grandmothers cooked before them. Now, Penelope Casas takes us into those homes to uncover the secrets of this simple, easily reproduced, and altogether marvelous cuisine.

For La Cocina de Mamá, Penelope Casas has collected recipes from great chefs and traditional home cooks in every region of Spain, all of whom have shared with her the dishes they grew up loving and still cook for themselves today. There are recipes for tapas, like Clams in Garlic Sauce; elegant soups and hearty one-pot meals like Stewed Potatoes with Pork Ribs; many wonderful seafood dishes like Fish Steaks with Peas in Saffron Sauce; meat and poultry dishes, such as Pork Tenderloin in Orange Sauce, Rack of Lamb Stuffed with Mushrooms and Scallions, and Lemon Chicken with Ginger and Pine Nuts; paella and other rice dishes—and even a few pasta dishes; unusual vegetable preparations, including Sautéed Spinach with Quince and Toasted Sesame Seeds; and desserts like Basque Apple Custard Tart. Whether of Roman, Moorish, or peasant origin, all of the dishes appeal to today’s tastes and exemplify the virtues of the Mediterranean diet—lots of olive oil, lean meats and fish, and vegetables. Sidebars throughout discuss ingredients, areas of Spain unfamiliar to most Americans, travel vignettes, and more. At last, Americans can discover the unique and irresistible flavors of authentic Spanish home cooking in La Cocina de Mamá.

5 out of 5 stars A sound investment even if you have a Spanish mother.......2006-09-29

This attractive book contains a tempting collection of recipes for robustly flavored, down-to-earth family dishes that are generally simple to prepare. The author's discussions of Spanish cooking methods, ingredients, and wines are very helpful and informative. I have only one caveat: the text is printed on different colors of paper and may be a little difficult for some people to read; however, the recipes themselves should appeal to those who appreciate homey, heartwarming fare.

Another book that offers great Mediterranean home cooking is "Recipes and Remembrances from an Eastern Mediterranean Kitchen," by Sonia Uvezian, which features a wealth of uncomplicated recipes that highlight healthful ingredients and vibrant flavors.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Inexpensive Intro to Spanish Cooking........2005-05-10

`La Cocina de Mama' is Penelope Casas' fifth book on Spanish cuisine, becoming very much to Spain what Marcella Hazan and Lydia Bastianich are to Italy, in their presentations of their respective national cuisines to American readers and eaters. We do not get the high theory of Spanish cuisine as we do from Hazan with her very Italian techniques that border in sophistication on great French culinary thinking.
Unlike Hazan and Bastianich, Casas is not a native of her subject country and she does not live there full time, so we get no books about the cooking of `My Spain', as we do from Bastianich' first book on the cuisine of Istria and northern Italy. However, this book, unlike all her previous volumes, comes close to being a presentation of Spanish `home cooking'.

Her four previous books can be easily divided into two pair. The first pair is the smaller volumes on the two great Spanish contributions to world cuisine, `Tapas' and `Paella'. The second pair cover the entire range of Spanish cooking, with the first, `The Food and Wine of Spain' being a very systematic, classic approach. The second, `Delicioso', is less formal, but does follow a very useful structure based on the culinary regions of Spain, to which Casas gives some very inventive and illuminating names such as `The Region of Sauces' for Galicia and `The Region of the Casseroles' for Catalunya and the Baleares Islands.

`La Cocina de Mama' is more anecdotal than the previous four books, picking up lots of recipes from home and restaurant cooks which have great interest in themselves, but which may not have been as representative of typical cooking in Spain.

I was especially pleased to see a Foreword from the very important Spanish chef, Ferran Adria as it would have been especially curious to see a book on Spanish restaurant cooking without a not to Adria, who has been touted from here to Timbuktu as the world's greatest working chef. And yet, there are no Adria recipes in this book. One has to believe that some time soon we should see a book in English on Adria's cuisine, but we get no hints of his famous foams on these pages. Instead, true to the nature of this book, we get a recipe for a Paella done by Adria's mother. Like bouillabaisse and so many other classic dishes, I always give a little wince when I hear paella described as a `simple, peasant' dish. I confess that relatively speaking, Ferran Adria's mother's dish of rabbit, green beans, tomato, and rice is pretty easy, but it is definitely more complicated than your typical 30-minute meal. Even so, Casas takes a little liberty with the procedure for the benefit of inexperienced American cooks and finishes off the dish in an oven rather than doing everything on the burner. Casas does repeat her caution from `Paella' to bake about 10 minutes longer in an electric oven than in a gas oven.

It seems to be the season for recanting old beliefs, so just as Mario Batali recently confessed that Italians do indeed eat their fair share of pastry, Casas has discovered that pasta is a more important ingredient in Spanish cooking than a simple noodle in Catalunya (northeastern Spain, with ties to old Spanish possessions around Naples) soups. The newly discovered flagbearer of pasta in Spain is a thick soup / thin stew from the grandmother of Andalusian chef Bartolome Rodrigo Lucena. Even more unusual than the pasta dish itself is the fact that the recipe gives a recipe for fresh pasta to be used instead of the dried pasta of southern Italy. The bland fresh pasta almost plays the same role as central European dumplings by offering a bland contrast to the strongly tasting salt cod, artichoke hearts, two types of paprika tomatoes, and green peppers.

With each of Casas' books, I am again and again amazed at the predominant role of sweet red peppers in the cuisine of Spain. They seem to be in practically every dish in every region. In spite of this overwhelming presence, Casas has yet to explain the seeming connection between the paprika's of Spain and the paprika's of Hungary, halfway across Europe. The Moorish connection doesn't work because sweet peppers came from the New World a few years after the Moors were expelled from Spain. The only other connection may be the royal house of Hapsburgs that ruled both Spain and Austria-Hungary.

The book has the obligatory map of Spain (if you don't realize how important this is, try reading a book on regional dishes without a map) in the front and a very simple organization of chapters on Tapas, Salads, Vegetables, Soups, Rice and Pasta, Fish and Shellfish, Poultry and Game, Meats, and Desserts.

One new `vector' I discovered in Spanish cooking is the important role of canned tuna in the salads. While France has its classic salad Nicoise, Spain gives us three major salad recipes with canned tuna. Aside from the omnipresent paprika or fresh red peppers, there is a lot of hard-boiled egg, cooked beans, and canned white asparagus.

The desserts have their fair share of chocolate, especially hot chocolate, the favorite form of the Aztecs from whom the Spanish acquired the brown gold. There are also spicy doughnuts that are made in almost exactly the same way as you would find in New Orleans or in Amish Pennsylvania. As you may expect, custards are also a big thing, plus lots and lots of almond, meringue, and lemon. One thing I miss in all of Casas books is bread. If Ms. Casas is listening, I should mention that in none of her books is there any mention of the special tool used to flip tortilla Espanola, of which I read in Ruth Reichl's new memoir, `Garlic and Sapphires'.

Excellent, low priced introduction to great Spanish cooking and stories about Spanish food.

4 out of 5 stars lucky guy who couldn't stop drugs.......2007-09-06

John Phillips was a creative guy whose songs helped define
the sixties, and this long bio tells about every detail of his
rise and fall. I could have done without knowing every little
tidbit about his sex life, but that's a small complaint. This
book is really an excellent read if you have an interest in
the 60s and the Mamas and Papas. As for John, I liked him from
what I'd seen of him when I started this book, but after reading
about his drug use and general depravity I finished it having zero
respect for him. I actually think even less of his music
after realizing a lot of Phillips' success came from his
being in the right place at the right time. Phillips was
one of the first stars to beat a drug rap by entering a
rehab and proclaiming to the world how he'd found sobriety.
It was no surprise that just a couple months after he
received probation he was back to his old habits. Amazingly,
he never stopped drinking, even while in rehab and
giving lectures to school children about the dangers of
addiction. Also, he never seemed to sincerely regret having
helped his children become drug addicts.

Good read about a lousy guy.

1 out of 5 stars Stay away from this one.......2007-04-09

I wasn't even born when this group was popular but knew the music from my parents. Got this book a few weeks ago and it wasn't anything like I thought it would be. The group was only together a few years and this tells the story of his whole life. Other then the years where the group was together the rest of the book lacks a lot, unless you like to hear about drug use. Seems like 75% of the book centers around drug use and in great detail. Maybe it was my mistake to think that the book would be more about the group. Seems like he talked more about his 3rd wife more then Michelle who was in the group with him. Just not enough about the group. When Mama Cass dies he mentions the whole thing on 1 page and that's it then right back to his drug use stories. He gets into more detail about every drug he used more then every song he sang. Was painful to read after the he gets past the early 70's.

4 out of 5 stars A Little TMI.......2006-07-29

After reading Michelle Phillips's marshmallow memoir, "California Dreamin'," I knew there must be more to the story of the Mamas and the Papas. So I sought out her ex-husband's. At more than two-and-a-half times the length, "Papa John" did not disappoint. It contained all of the sordid details that Michelle chose to omit, and then some. In fact, it was a little TMI (too much information) for my taste.

John seemed to be writing this comprehensive tome with his own mortality in mind, wanting to document for posterity every detail of his life. The book covers his ancestry, his childhood and family, his escapades as a young man, his first marriage, meeting Michelle, forming the Mamas and the Papas, his subsequent career and third marriage, and his ugly descent into drug abuse. Not surprisingly, I found that the most interesting part of the story began and ended with Michelle.

On the plus side, John includes interesting recollections of the Mamas and the Papas, and throws in a few shocking revelations about other celebrities as well. More importantly, he gives us a historical, inside account of one of the most vibrant and creative periods in popular culture: the beginnings of L.A.'s pop-rock music scene in the Sixties.

The later chapters, which deal primarily with his (and his children's) heavy drug taking, were written in painstaking, tedious, and often disturbing detail. Perhaps putting it all down for the record was therapeutic for John, or perhaps he was attempting to discourage others from going down the same path. Either way, they were at times so repulsive that I had to skim through much of them.

Given their three short years together, the Mamas and the Papas may have been a flash in the pan, but oh, what a brilliant flash they were. Their leader John Phillips was a charismatic and creative musical genius who sadly succumbed to the excesses of living large. "Papa John" is a tell-all memoir which leaves no stone unturned, no question unanswered. Except perhaps, "Why do creativity and self-destruction seem to go hand-in-hand?"

2 out of 5 stars Uh, no........2006-02-17

I like my rock bios as much as the next guy, but this one was torture. Halfway through it I realized that I could have cared less about the subjects at hand, John Phillips, the Mamas & Papas, who slept with Michelle, which arm he shot which drug into, etc., and vowed to be more selective in the future when seeking out my books. Not even one for the beach.

5 out of 5 stars Honest and rich , a slice of a time.......2006-02-11

You will enjoy this if you dig unflichingly honest accounts of the dirty side of sex, drugs, rock and roll. This guy was hugely talented, extremely lucky , and a beast in terms of consumption. I read this book years ago and really enjoyed it- I love reading about the lowest depths this guys sunk to- he had a every sophisticated ingenius set-up in the pharmacy I recall. Equally exciting was the story of the origins of the Mamas and the Papas- in a sunshiney California world that will never be repeated. If pop music history is your bag, you won't want to miss this unique slice of history.

2 out of 5 stars A waste of my money :(.......2007-08-09

This book was very disappointing to me. I am an intermediate crocheter, and I bought this book primarily for the patterns. Although at first glance a few of them seemed worthwhile, in the long run, I have had this book for at least 6 months and haven't even started one project from it. (Which is very rare for me.) The instructions are o.k., the pictures are o.k. but neither are great. It is also very discouraging that the yarn used in most of the projects shown is very expensive and hard to find. This is not a book I would recommend buying online. Go to your local bookstore, and check it out to see if it's right for you. If that's not an option and you want a fun book for crochet I would suggest my all time favorite: Debbie Stoller's "Stitch N Bitch: Happy Hooker".

5 out of 5 stars Fun and Informative Book.......2007-05-13

This book is really fun to read. The author has a great way of getting and holding your attention. Plus, she provides great information on how to crochet and has some really great patterns included.

5 out of 5 stars More than I'd expected.......2007-04-29

After getting and looking in this book, I like it more than I thought I did when I first saw it at a bookstore. It contains 27 patterns of assorted types, not just appearal, and also Part 1 has 6 chapters of 80 pages with helpful information including how-to, stitch guides, garment sizing guidelines, hooks, and more in what looked like such a small book at first. It's packed with good info, not just the usual blah blah, and enough patterns I think are cute enough to make, and I'm picky. ;) Well worth its price, in my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Nice patterns (need more real photos).......2007-02-21

It has nice patterns and the explanations are clear, but I was expecting more color photographs, a lot of pink-kind of print in the book

3 out of 5 stars Just ok...a decent read, uninteresting patterns........2007-02-15

I am an impulsive craft book buyer and am trying to beef up my collection of crochet books. There isn't one pattern in this book I'd make. I do like the prose style and I've found the book quite enjoyable to read. I dislike the paper quality and agree with another poster that the center section of color pictures is a bit scant.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down.......2007-04-16

I read this book way back in the summer of 1988, when I was awaiting the birth of my daughter. It was the perfect novel to read during such a hot summer, during which the temperatures in the Midwest were similar to the hottest temps in the South. I found it fascinating that the practice of voodoo and herbal medicine as portrayed in the novel had survived through so many generations. The characters were strong and memorable. I ran across this book again while browsing in the library, and I am thinking about recommending it for the book club where I work.

5 out of 5 stars You'll be happy that you had giving the time to read this book........2006-05-27

I tell you a good book is one of those books that you're actually sad when it's over. That was "Mama Day" for me.

What many reviewers stated in here is true, Gloria Naylor is a master storyteller. Her characters are vividly drawn, her humor is by turns laugh-out-load funny or subtlety sarcastic, and her prose quite often caused this reader to sit back and savor the sheer creativity, beauty and freshness of the images which she creates.

I've read a lot of books by the current crop of black authors but nothing has touched me and made me fall totally in love with a book like Mama Day. This book was brilliant and I couldn't put it down until it was over.

In this book Willow Springs is a sparsely populated sea island just off America's southeastern coast whose small black community is dominated by the elderly matriarch, Miranda ``Mama'' Day. When Mama Day's great-niece, Cocoa, marries, she returns to Willow Springs with her husband for an extended visit. Once there, strange forces both natural and supernatural work to separate the couple. After visiting the menacing Ruby, a local root doctor, Cocoa becomes dangerously ill, and the struggle for her life showcases Naylor's talent for descriptive prose. Though the novel as a whole fairly breathes with life, it is marred by the unintentionally comic death of a major character, which is attacked by a vicious chicken.

This is a masterpiece of contemporary literature, a pleasure to experience. "Mama Day" is an entertaining and original look at family, community, and love. With a little voodoo sprinkled in for good measure.

5 out of 5 stars Moving, poignant, love story!.......2005-12-27

There are really no adequate words to express what a wonderful read you about the embark upon should you take the time to read this book. It is one of the most poignant and soul-stirring love stories I have perhaps ever read. Each page is meant to be savored as though one is sampling a fine wine, as Naylor weaves a spellbinding tale of how love truly does conquer all.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites........2005-01-05

It is raining in San Francisco and I just picked this book up to read again....for the fourth time. It feels like visiting an old friend: warm, comfortable and easy.

I lost too many people because of AIDS, one in particular. Thanks to this book I know Randy Garvin will ALWAYS look like love to me. If you read this story, you know what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2003-12-09

Brilliant! Powerful! A genius of a writer! Prose worthy of a Pulitzer! Would that I could aspire to be such a great writer. Naylor's style is at times playful, other times penetrating, piercing the soul of the reader with vivid images of the small town and colorful characters. Subject matter is a little dark for me (especially toward the end) but the writing is superb!

"Have you ever felt that finding a man, falling in love, and living happily ever after is totally out of your control? Is it possible to find a man who will be a friend and equal, but who will also do whatever you want him to do? And what can you do to make the man you already have give you everything you want? Never fear, Mama Gena is here with practical tools for a relationship that starts out good and only gets better. In Mama Gena's Owner's and Operator's Guide to Men, relationship expert Regena Thomashauer (a.k.a. Mama Gena) will teach you how to effectively ""train"" your man and create a rewarding and intimate relationship for you both. Mama's secret to success is simple -- and possibly scandalous -- but here it is: Men live to serve women. They live to make their women happy, because when the woman isn't happy, nobody's happy. The fact is that relationships function best when the woman's desires are completely fulfilled. In this book Mama Gena shows women how to throw out the old ""survival model"" of relationships (in which women serve men to get food and shelter) and take on her Sister Goddess model (in which men serve women to get friendship, sex, and happiness) instead.

I love Mama Gena. She helps us who are WAAAAAAY too serious in achieving etc etc and are way too serious in life to just lighten up!!! She helps us get in touch with a part of ourselves that we may not even have known about!! Don't take it all so seriously, ladies!! Life is for living! She has helped me TREMENDOUSLY to just lighten up and enjoy being a woman- something I had never even considered and certainly didn't know how to to (as an "acheiver" all of my life!) Love this woman for reminding us of who we are as WOMEN.

2 out of 5 stars Mama Gena's Owners & Operating Guide to Men.......2007-02-18

Not exactly what I thought but has some insight into fun, pleasure and facing the world with a positive attidude.

1 out of 5 stars Operate like a Parasite.......2006-11-29

Do you want to learn how to be a parasite? Mama Gena can show you how.
She not only show's you how, she also trains you how to fool yourself
into thinking parasitic behavior is an intelligent approach to life.
If manipulating others and 'living for your crotch' is your goal, this teaches you how. If you are uncertain how to feel about yourself when you behave this way, this book is for you.
If she trains you that acting in this way is not the way a parasite behaves, then she controls your mind, just like she teaches in this book.

I feel bad for the people who follow this advice.
How will they be viewed when their beauty is gone, and they need to rely on their friendships? How will others treat them after they've lied and manipulated others for their whole life? Women who follow this advice will end up being the creepy aunt who goes to weddings alone, left alone to have fun by herself, a pathetic site to those around her.

5 out of 5 stars I agree with the last reviewer........2006-11-19

We should learn that the word "pussy" does not denote something bad and dirty. Our bodies are beautiful and wonderful and do amazing things and we should love every part of them. Furthermore, how someone could despise the word "goddess" is beyond me. There are several forms of goddess religion in the United States. There is a form of goddess neopaganism that is incredibly rewarding for women who have been hurt and scarred by any of the various man-god religions. These feminine spiritualities often incorporate a reverence for the female body that includes, among other things, respect for the "pussy".

4 out of 5 stars Great Book If You're Open To Having Fun!.......2006-10-25

She's blunt. She's brazen. You could even say she's a bit raunchy - {gasp!} - but she's right on track. It is not your usual self-help book that's for sure. Basically, Mama Gena is saying "lighten up" (which some people on this site obviously have trouble with) and enjoy being you! Give yourself a break. It's a hysterical book, but gets down to the nitty gritty in that most women really don't enjoy being themselves and that when you do start to enjoy being you - others enjoy being near you! I received this book from a friend when I was feeling very down about myself and my life. I found it very helpful and have forwarded it on to several other women in my life who enjoyed it. I would really recommmend it to any women who are feeling generally down and out, a bit blue raddley, or really just want a good laugh and a quick pick-me-up.
