Book Description

A Kind Friend to Walk with You...

For many, depression is associated with shame and humiliation -- even a lack of faith. But in this refreshingly honest and oh-so-very-real revelation of one woman's journey through depression, you'll hear the voice of a kind friend. And in her words you'll find hope and renewed confidence that will guide you through your own darkness and into the light.

Along with the humor, Chonda shares practical insight, biblical teaching, emotional support, and sympathetic concern. Whether you've experienced depression in your own life or in the life of someone you love, this friend has something to offer you: help, hope and, believe it or not, plenty of laughter.

4 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-10-04

This book flowed well, and I really appreciated Chonda's candid and honest look at her journey through depression. While the church sometimes implies if you suffer from depression, you must not have enough faith or you are making it up, Chonda is not ashamed to share her story and her faith. Thanks for sharing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-10-02

I recently saw Chondra on stage. I knew with her type of humor, I needed to read her book.Being diagnosed with Clinical Depression myself, I felt we had something in common. I was not disappointed, her book is excellent. She is able to put into words thoughts and feelings just like mine. It seems God put people into her life just like He did me. This is a must read!!!!!

This book just really hit home with me. I could relate to so many things. Chonda is such a funny lady and it left me so optimistic. Passed it on to a friend that is traveling down that dark road. She loved it also.

Laughing in the Dark: A Comedian's Journey Through Depression is the true story of comedian, Christian, and depression survivor Chonda Pierce, in her own words. Pierce recovered with help from close friends, therapy, and a Zoloft prescription; she candidly shares her story as affirmation that "depression" is neither shameful nor a sign of faltering faith. Though the author's abiding faith in God is quite evident, Laughing in the Dark is intended for readers of all belief systems. "When your mind has been captivated by the dark for a long time and you finally experience some healing - whether instantaneously through an act of God or gradually through the gift of medicine - you feel liberated... But there's more work to be done. It's like having any other serious, debilitating injury. You're excited when you make it through all the surgeries, but you still have to battle through rehabilitation in order to learn to walk, talk, and feed yourself again." Highly recommended, especially for the personal shelves and reading lists of anyone suffering depression or their friends and families.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Fun Book.......2007-01-21

Janice Dickinson has a great sense of humor. While you may not agree with some of the things suggest, things she has done or the choices she has made, she doesn't brush them under the carpet. She's bold, she's honest and she tells stories with a twist of humor. A fun read.

5 out of 5 stars Outlandish, Outrageous Fun.......2006-10-02

A FUN Read.

The sub-title says it's about Dating, Mating and Extricating. But I wouldn't take it too seriously. Sure, it's fine if you're a rich, six foot, supermodel with a body that's the very best example of what high priced plastic surgeons can build. Instead just read it for fun, in the same way we like to see the super houses of the rich and fameous.

And fun it is.

It's a description of a life where men are falling all over themselves to go out with her. It's the description of a girl getting ready to go on a skiing trip with a boy friend who goes out to buy $3,000 worth of clothes for the trip. It's probably not going to be of much practical help to the woman who finds herself single again, a few pounds overweight, with three kids to take care of. Instead, just read it for it's outlandish fun.

4 out of 5 stars Janice is NO lady, but she's VERY funny!.......2006-09-25

A lady? Are you kidding with all the f-bombs she drops in this books? Still, it's the very thing to shake folks up. In her book, this Zza Zza Gabor of the 21st Century gives us ordinary people a peek into her egocentric "fantastic plastic" world. Normally, that would just annoy me, but I had to laugh at some of the "meow" factor in this book...and let's face, it she does dispense good real-life advice when it comes to dating...stuff that people NEED to hear rather than what they want to hear...and from the voice of true experience rather than some smug but clueless married woman.

Dickerson's advice is brutally honest and is given with a healthy dose of sass...and I like how she doesn't believe in all that "Rules" crap, nor does she put all the blame on dating failure exclusively on the female of the species like so many advisors do. I especially LOVE her comment about the men who are fat "trolls" but still expect to have a supermodel on their arm...it's about damn time someone said that to those megalomaniacs LOL. Her comment about the Twinkies had me nearly rolling on the floor laughing...crude but hilarious!

Note I am not claiming this book is illuminating, socially redeeming or profound. If you want that then I'm afraid you'll have to look elsewhere, but just for a bit of shadenfreunde inspired laughter at her and other folk's expense, then this is where you want to be...

P.S. I love the forward by John Lovitz too...he's as nervy and funny as she is...so did she sleep with him or not, that's what I want to know! That info could probably fill an entire book, eh? LOL

3 out of 5 stars It's always fun chatting with Janice, but this isn't her best effort.......2006-09-13

Dickinson is a larger-than-life talent at modeling, hosting, and writing funny tell-all memoirs. She dished about her long, hard climb to the top of the supermodel world in No Lifeguard on Duty, and then she updated American on her life as a sober, wisened, hard-working mom in Everything About Me is Fake...and I'm Perfect. She's already revealed the most shocking and titillating anecdotes from her super-life, so her third book is packaged as a dating guide featuring her "patented blend of hard-won romantic wisdom and diva chic." She even manageds to dredge up a few more dating and bedroom antics to throw in her advice chapters.

The tossed-off tell-all anecdotes which worked so well in Dickinson's first two memoirs fall flat in this format. The book meanders with advice that applies more to six-foot, size-zero supermodels than to the average American woman. Sure, there are fun moments listening to our unapologetic narrator, but it appear that the books was constructed from scraps of shocking tales rather than as a whole entity. Dickinson's other books succeeded because they had a structure, a message, and even life lessons (as subtle as they may have been.) This is a mish-mash of tales masquerading as an advice book, and since when does an advice book need a glossy, dozen-page photo shoot of the (very beautiful) narrator in glammed-out poses?

OMG! i thought the book was just like the title says dating, mating, abd extricating but its just another janice story. i thought it will be funner, its just about her experience with men.

Book Description

Three years ago, Carnie Wilson was 300 pounds, unemployed, depressed, and sitting in a doctor's office being told that she probably wouldn't live much longer. At night, she had terrible dreams of her mother getting a phone call from the police saying, "We're very sorry, but someone found your daughter in bed, and she's gone." Knowing she had to do something to save herself, Carnie opted to have gastric bypass surgery. She woke up the next day in the hospital determined that she wouldn't just work on having a new body, but also a new life.

That's the story we've already heard. In I'm Still Hungry, Wilson picks up where she left off in her 2001 book Gut Feelings. She takes readers step by step on her weight loss journey, which wasn't just a road to reaching 125 pounds. It was a mental trip where she had to conquer all of her fears and insecurities, including issues with her father, Beach Boy Brian Wilson—which made her gain the weight in the first place.

This book offers a unique way of showing the progression of weight loss, with one section serving as a diary of sorts. It details Carnie's weight at specific times so that readers can use this part of the book to find their own weight and see how Carnie's life lessons got her head in the right place so the pounds could keep falling off.

Wilson also offers a humorous look at her own weight loss, asking: What's better—sex or chocolate? (Answer: "Sex followed by chocolate.") She also discusses re-establishing her career as an actress and singer in Hollywood. It wasn't easy when the National Enquirer was practically staking out her house to catch her on "a fat day," or when fans e-mailed her to chastise her for flashing "some arm flab" on Entertainment Tonight.

And, of course, the book includes Carnie's minute-by-minute description of posing for the June 2003 issue of Playboy magazine, with the inevitable questions: Can I eat breakfast before posing nude? Why do I have my period this week of all weeks? and Do I look fat? Carnie also gives readers a glimpse of what spurred on the much awaited 2004 regrouping of the Wilson Phillips band and how she is in perfect harmony again with her partners, sister, Wendy Wilson; and bandmate, Chynna Phillips.

Finally, the last part of the book reveals the specific weight-loss plan that Carnie still uses to keep slim—and anyone can follow this plan to lose weight whether they've had weight-loss surgery or not. Carnie even includes a few of her favorite desserts.

Wilson is still hungry for knowledge, love, acceptance, and yes, a chocolate chip cookie or two.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great information and very entertaining.......2007-04-24

I recommend this book to anyone interested in WLS surgery, or knows someone who is having it. Carnie gives great information on what to expect after surgery, how she coped with issues the doctors don't talk about and kept me uplifted and excited about having my surgery. It was a quick easy read and I plan on having my husband read it so he will understand how and why I am choosing to do WLS.

2 out of 5 stars Waste of money!!.......2006-08-02

As with her first book, I was dissappointed. There is little quality in this book when it comes to GBP. While there is information in there about some struggles and what it was like for her, the "meat" of the book was about her posing in playboy, and being in love. The crude language remained, although it was not as bad as her first book, "Gut Feelings." I was going to sell these on eBay, but I think I will just give them away!

2 out of 5 stars so so.......2006-02-02

I really enjoyed reading about Carnie's experience because I have also had WLS. She offers great ideas, although I caution you that one should always talk to his/her own Dr. and not just taking her advice. Anyway, my complaint with her book is that she is sooooo inlove and sooooo happy all the time. It seems as if this was a panacea. Yes, I am happy and I have had great results from WLS, but it isn't all peaches and cream. In fact, there are many days that I don't even want to face the world. She seems to glamorize the surgery too much and she talks about her wonderful, fantastic, amazing husband too much! Enough already- we get it you're happy!

5 out of 5 stars A Journey Worth Taking.......2005-11-01

I throughly enjoyed this book. Carnie is very funny and she gives a personal and detailed story that is shared by many. The personal point of view was greatly welcomed. I loved her humor and her insight. She shared herself in a way that I would be afraid to. She shed light on many issues that we as obese people usually overlook or ignore. Carnie is a very brave and inspiring person. Everyone considering having WLS should read this very personal story. Anyone that has had the WLS and does not have any support should also read this book. This is not only a story but a helpful guide into a brave new world.

5 out of 5 stars Part 2 of a Great Read!!!.......2005-09-26

This book is done as well as the 1st which rarely happens!!! I am preparing for a Gastric Bypass in October and I found both of Carnie Wilson's books to be very helpful!!! Be sure to read them both...I am sure that you won't be disappointed!!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I don't usually write reviews but...this was an exceptional read.......2007-09-29

Before I read Fabulosity, I wasn't a big Kimora fan, but I have nothing but respect for her after reading this book. Yes, she talks a lot about fashion, and her extravagant lifestyle..and what else can you expect..Authors talk about what they know..and Kimora knows what it means to be fabulous. The people that complain about the book are dumb for expecting anything less than a woman talking about what she knows. But intertwined with her lavishness, the book was surprising down to earth! It wasnt some stuff old etiquette, how-to-do book that was filled with nonsense. She speaks like a diva, but its with genuine candor. How do I put this?..Its really a lifestyle manual...how to develop yourself as a goddess from the inside out...professionally and personally..Its a real book. However if you are not in the demographic she is addressing, you won't get it..and you will think the book is a waste, b/c you won't get it. This book is for the urban, chic, young woman who is a product of the hip hop culture but has the style and grace of high fashion(or even just the desire to be that)...if you are more comfortable with the non-urban, old world culture...THEN THIS IS NOT THE BOOK FOR YOU..there are plenty of other books available that appeal to your demographic.
I'll admit, because of the negative reviews I read on here and elsewhere, I had very low expectations of "Fabulosity"..and even her flashy persona. People said, oh you can't apply what Kimora says in real life, she's just rambles on about her life and how great it is...That is not the case, AT ALL. You just have to know how to apply her principles to your own life, even if you aren't in the fashion industry. Its really just about learning how to know yourself, love yourself, carry yourself, etc. Oh and its about a state of mind too..If you feel like a glamorous lifestyle is out of your reach, and you have already made up your mind that you are content with mediocrity, then yeah the book will come off too flamboyant for you..but if you have an open mind, and you don't mind learning something from somebody who indeed has it all, this book will be a great asset. I borrowed this book from the library first, but after reading it, I have just purchased it so that I can refer to it whenever I need that extra "chutzpah" confidence booster. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

2 out of 5 stars Blah Blah.......2007-05-10

Dont get me wrong I LOVE KIMORA !! And she is fabulous. But this book.....as much as she says this isnt about telling her life story, it came off to be that way. It was an encouraging book but after a while they all say the same thing. I read half and just couldnt take anymore.

1 out of 5 stars Fashionistas Only.......2007-02-23

This book really isn't for everyone. I feel that most of the advice she gave was not univeral but was very specific to the fashion and modeling industry. I felt that if I did have the things she recommeded at my job I would be fired.

The only thing that might be univeral is what she says about debt, but she doesn't really give a detailed plan to get out of it.

1 out of 5 stars Who is she kidding?.......2007-01-31

This is truly one of the worst wastes of paper i have ever read. Kimora just drones on and on about how rich, successful, and "fabulous" she is. She has a chapter on relationship advice...it wasn't long before she was in divorce court after writing this book. She constantly contradicts herself...for example, see through clothes are on her list of things never to wear. Then, on another page, she advises to buy nipple covers to wear under sheer tops. Her idea of advice is telling women how to go diamond shop[ping for their collection. Do you know any women with a diamond collection? i don't. Basically the whole point of her book is to show how rich she is and act like she made it from nothing when we all know the capital came from her filthy rich husband. It's impossible to respect someone who is constantly quoting Little Kim as a role model.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your $$$.......2007-01-05

As an avid reader, this was one of the worst books I've ever read in my entire life. Besides Kimora "barking" at the reader throughout the whole book, there really isn't much else to it. She goes on and on and on about how she beats her husband at business....over....and over....and over again! This book truly sucks. Please keep your money in your pocket, or buy Justin Timberlake's cd instead. It's much more enjoyable than this book; hands down.

Book Description

Teri Hatcher secured her place in Americas heart when she stood up to accept her Golden Globe for Best Actress and declared herself a "has-been" on national television. That moment showcased her down-to-earth, self-deprecating style -- and her frank openness about the ups and downs shes experienced in life and work. But what the world might not have seen that night is that Teris self-acceptance is the hard-won effort of a single mother with all the same struggles most women have to juggle -- life, love, bake sale cookies, and dying cats. Now, in the hope that her foibles and insights might inspire and motivate other women, Teri opens up about the little moments that have sustained her through good times and bad. From the everyday (like the importance of letting your daughter spill her macaroni so she knows its okay to make mistakes) to the rare (a rendezvous with a humpback whale -- and no, he was not a suitor), the message at the heart of Burnt Toast -- that happiness and success are choices that we owe it to ourselves to make -- is sure to resonate with women everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Relatable.......2007-09-12

In her own words, this book is Teri Hatcher's, "attempt to do my part to bring us closer together. There is intimacy between strangers." I think she accomplishes just that. When I picked up the book, I honestly didn't know anything about her life, and I just assumed she had a gaudy unrealistic existence like anyone in Hollywood. Throughout the book, she is completely honest about her struggles and insecurities, and I was very surprised about how similiar some of her issues are to my own. I could relate to her feelings about ambition, being a stay-at-home mom, and being afraid to succeed. It's funny, insightful and overall a great read.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!.......2007-07-07

This book took me by surprise. It wasn't what I was expecting; however, it completely exceeded my expectations by a long shot. I thought it would be more of a light girly read...and while it is that, its also offers some unique philosophies on life and brought me into a deeper state of reflection. My favorite is the part about "death bed decisions". And although I read this book over a year ago, I still use some of her insight throughout many of my own personal experiences. I highly recommend this for women between the ages of thirty and fifty. It's a fun, easy read and there are hidden surprises throughout the book - some things really surprised me. I loved hearing about her seven-year-old daughter and their camping trips. There's so much good stuff in this book and it's a fast read. I can't imagine someone not enjoying it.

5 out of 5 stars Better then I thought.......2007-05-07

It turned out great. I was alittle weary because I don't care to much for Teri Hatcher but this is a well written book and it actually showed that she was more down to earth then you think.

3 out of 5 stars I'm probably the only guy to ever read this book.......2007-04-10

Teri, Teri - despite being a glamourous hollywood and TV actress, you seem so sheltered and alone and afraid to take your own advice. I thought the book was from the heart and had some inspiring thoughts...but,

I picked this book up at the library for only one reason - I have been completely in love/lust with Teri Hatcher since the I first saw her as Lois Lane. I never actually watched an episode of the show despite being a major consumer of Superman comic books as a young boy. I would generally have the sound off while doing other things and just watch when she was on. She was so gorgeous and had such a commanding presence on the screen. How could she not become a star?

I have never watched Desperate Housewives - I've heard its great and all, but I never seem to know when its on. But its not surprising to me at all that she is a star-attraction on it and nominated for awards...I spotted this years ago.

The book - its light and actually can get a little heavy too, she has some good insight into why people are so miserable - my take home message was mainly that its self-confidence issues. And it was interesting as a man, since while we all struggle with it, its not the central cause of our male 3am anxiety attacks.

But what I wanted from her book was not so much the stories of cats, baths, charities and motherhood, I wanted to know much more about her relationships with men. She doesn't say much about what is attractive to her in a man, she doesn't really say much about her husbands - like why she married them and why she divorced them. She said that Emerson's father was a great Dad, so then what was he not so great at? I got the distinct feeling that she was being very cagey and not letting on to the fact that maybe she was the source of the failed relationships, then again maybe not - she doesn't say. But from where I sit, periodic writhing in a mass of tears on the kichen floor screams "Danger, Danger, Will Robinson!", this chick has got some very deep rooted issues. Futhermore, other than the premature ejactulator and a few other zero dudes, she doesn't really say all that much about why she can't meet good men, sustain a relationship, etc. She must meet the handsome, wealthy cool dudes all the time. Is she to bound up in proper starlet behavior to let herself go? My sense is that she is really really picky about men..OK, OK, she is a beautiful Hollywood star, she should be picky right? - absolutely unless its the reason that you can't get laid anytime you want, (as I had always assumed most beautiful Hollywood types can.) So what's the real issue Teri?

And I agree with one of the other reviews - after hearing she turned 40 for the 10th time - I got it. And my only other nit-pick is the mostly annoying parenthetical comments dropped in as an attempt at humor or wit. They were neither.

I still love you Teri - thanks for writing the book, it did give me a much better sense of who you are - you are a very lovely, loving and healing person - I hope you find the love of your life someday. Give me a call anytime - would love to chat with you over a glass of fine wine.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, sweet, girlie, and touching!.......2007-04-05

Definately a girls, girl book. Never really took even time to think about Teri Hatcher before one way or the other, but the cover caught my eye in teh book store.

I really, really enjoyed this book. As others have said not super deep, in a super deep way, but actually is in it's simplicity and honesty. I laughed a lot and cried a little even surprised at how honest she really was with her daughter in moments - - in a very good way!- - don't want to ruin the book.

Highly recommend reading. It inspired you to live you're day honestly and with hope, and, for those gosh darn bleak days, to not beat yourself up, but know you'll get through it and just look for the lessons.

You feel like you're talking to one of your very best girlfriends.

Thanks for writing it Teri!!

enjoy~

Book Description

At thirty, beauty icon Kimora Lee Simmons is the mistress of her own empire of lifestyle brands, mother to two young daughters, and a glamorous staple of the social circuit. Now, in this uplifting and inspiring book, Simmons spills her secrets of how women can use their smarts to build a rich and satisfying life full of success, fun, and, yes, a bit of blinding bling–the Fabulosity that every woman deserves.

Simmons explains how to balance feminine, stop–them–in–their–tracks glamour with sign–on–the–dotted–line business power; how to get past barriers that exist because of gender, race, or age; how to find a marriageable man who'll support your biggest dreams (while keeping other women at bay); and how to have the most fun of your life while doing it! She gives hundreds of insider tips on fashion, beauty, home decorating, and socializing and explains how she succeeded in business with little formal experience, building a $70 million business out of a T–shirt.

Packed with anecdotes and first–person experiences from the catwalks of Paris to P. Diddy's parties, Fabulosity takes readers behind the scenes of this diva's diverse, action–packed life and offers insights on how any woman can channel her own "high–profile personality" and creative power, no matter what her own goals may be.

3 out of 5 stars Kimora... I expected this to be fabulous!.......2007-06-27

This was not a bad book. A lot of it was good, HOWEVER...
If I read one more generic "you go girl!", "unleash your inner diva/goddess!" I will jump off a cliff. I could read those any time, so when I buy a book from someone as glam as Kimora, you better believe I am expecting to hear details on how she remains so fab. What products does she use? What are her real thoughts and beauty secrets? How does she get so confident? This book was WAY too vanilla. It was as if she was trying not to offend anyone and was too afraid to write what she really thought. Example: Any time Kimora writes something like "Walk into a room like you own the damn place"- she will then take away from that statement and immediately follow it with "I am not saying be too overly cocky, I am just saying to be positive and confident." I wanted to hear her real thoughts and it was clear she was either too afraid to write them or advised not to write them, probably so she wouldn't affect her business in a negative way. Maybe she will put out a better book when she is through with Baby Phat. Kimora, I love you girl, but this was not quite fabulous enough.

4 out of 5 stars A suprisingly good read.......2007-06-01

I will start out by saying I wasn't a huge fan of hers because she seemed snotty to me. But I read the reviews and saw it at walmart for $13 so I bought it. It was a fun read and very down to earth, yes she wears designer clothes and has a big house but there is no reason to be mad at her about it. I appreciated reading an inspirational book written by someone from my own generation. I read a lot of success books and they are usually from older white men, sometimes black and sometimes asian but all older men.
I read the book in about a week and I am glad I did. She was a normal girl that found success in something she loves.

3 out of 5 stars Sassy, but probably for younger women.......2007-05-23

I wish I had read this book in my late teens. So many life lessons about confidence, getting ahead, and other power moves that Kimora touches on in the book, I had to learn the hard way. Her book is a straight from the hip book of advice and anecdotes that are fun to read. For those just starting to look for their path in life, especially those who look up to Kimora, it's an inspiring read. For those who are a little farther along in life, it can still be a reminder of the sexy inner confidence we must maintain.

Kimora's personality is over the top, and that personality exudes through the book. Whether or not it works for you is up to your taste. Personally, I liked the no-nonsense approach.

Lenedra Carroll, the mother and manager of singer/songwriter Jewel, offers a memoir that speaks to her spiritual theories on creating abundance. The Architecture of All Abundance, her "rag to riches" life story, starts out when the author is a young girl growing up poor in a small Alaskan village and winds up with Carroll becoming a successful CEO of a global entertainment enterprise. More than a memoir, this is more accurately an inspirational book on how you too can build a fulfilling life that includes plenty of spirit and prosperity. Carroll emphasizes the timeless truths of spiritual abundance--ones that readers have probably heard before: listen to your soul's voice, ask the right questions, make time for stillness, own the fear instead of avoiding it, remember that generosity generates prosperity. Yet, like any effective teacher, Carroll has the ability to package these nuggets of wisdom with just the right anecdote or just the right phrasing so that it finally sinks in. It's not uncommon to find provocative passages such as, "We can all realize that while the fear is real, it is also true that what we fear is like a mirage rising off the heat of a projected or past pain." Although her structure of alternating poetry, personal stories, and spiritual advice makes the book slightly disjointed, Carroll's eloquence as a narrator ties it together. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

The Architecture of All Abundance is a spiritual memoir tracing the path of Lenedra Carroll. The author was born in a village in Alaska, and from that childhood she brought with her independence and a connection to nature rare in those involved in the entertainment industry. The book weaves together stories from her childhood with stories about running an ethical business in the shark-infested world of recording studios and mass market celebrities. The book illustrates alternative methods of attaining prosperity, love, health, and a sense of purpose. The stories reveal how she has applied her own values to everything from a childhood case of frostbite to advising her daughter, singer/songwriter Jewel, to live in her van to free herself to pursue her artistic goals on her own terms.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and inspiring!.......2005-08-22

The Architecture of All Abundance is one of the most beautiful books I have read in a long time! It left me feeling tremendously inspired on a personal level and motivated me to get more connected again to my spiritual side. The book also gave me hope regarding the corporate world. Lenedra Carroll is doing such positive work for the world, and I believe her company is a real leader in terms of the spiritual focus it holds in its day-to-day operations. To me, this book should be a "must read" for anyone in a leadership position, and it is a "must read" for anyone seeking inspiration in their personal life. The book is beautifully written, and all the personal stories and examples included in the book help to make Ms Carroll's practices seem possible for anyone to apply to their lives.

1 out of 5 stars Jewel's Mom.......2003-02-10

I'm sure that the author meant well by writing this book; her tone is very serious and sincere. But it is over-written and heavy-handed. If it had been penned by anyone other than a celebrity's mother, it would not have been published. It does not warrant reading and certainly does not warrant buying.

4 out of 5 stars No Sharks.......2002-12-03

A wonderful book. Packed full of inspirational stories and solid, experiential advice. Lenedra Carroll beautifully communicates her reality in this life and bridging her visions into the music industry. Her practical wisdom is timeless and fascinating when applied to the music industry and inspirational because of her abundant results. Beautifully communicating the talk while successfully walking the walk.

5 out of 5 stars A lyrical, engaging, and wise journey.......2002-07-11

Beautifully written, evocative, and so full of simple but heretofor elusive (for most of us) truths that you'll want to re-read every page 2 or 3 times to let the wisdom and import sink in and be absorbed.

I read this book last October, and again this month, and it lost nothing in the repetition. It actually became more valued as well as validating.

Ms. Carroll has some advantages over most of us in that she has long familiarity with, surety of, and accessibility to her inner guidance system (perhaps universal guidance system is more appropriate?). She also had the sense and early discernment to ask questions that revealed the nature of things, and a number of magical experiences that motivated her to seek more generative paradigm of the world. The structures she's created (for creating a successful life in the material world) are impressive and really define "beyond win-win".

5 out of 5 stars More than a self-help book.......2002-03-29

I'm not generally one for books of this nature (I usually enjoy fiction over nonfiction), but this book was fascinatingly plain. It dealt with everything I knew was familiar, yet was written in such a way that I was able to see 'everyday' as extraordinary. Knowing something of the content of the book before I bought it, I was afraid it would be too hokey and corny. I was also afraid it would be a book someone wrote to ride on the coattails of her daughter's (Jewel) success. It was nothing of the sort. Once I read this book, I saw where the source of inspiration in Jewel's music and poetry came from. Her mother, Lenedra, is a powerhouse of wisdom and gentleness. Not to mention eloquence! This book was very, very well written. The words are intelligent, coherent, and thoughtful.

Lenedra's prose is delightful. She offers her wisdom through insights and observations, never once taking up any pretention that she knows every solution to every problem. It's not a 'how-to' book to a successful, balanced, and happy life. On every page she emphasizes the answers, along with problems, are all there within our grasp, and offers her insights on how to see and follow through with the solution to our woes.

Her advice is simple, loving, nurturing and very wise, and she brings a unique and fresh approach to age old adages. Every story she shares, every notion she brings up, it's all stuff we've already heard, but really registered. The difference is you can feel from her words that she lived and learned the lessons firsthand, and that alone makes for a more engaging read. I also love that she never asserts solutions are beyond our own grasp, that answers are blessed only by aloof deities. Her words are powerful yet gentle, and place emphasis on the beauty of human courage. This book centers around human goodness, not humanity's failings.

This book is a nice, thick read. I've taken a good long time to read through it, reading only a few pages here and there, but the book keeps drawing me back to read more. This is one of those books you keep going back to, and I can see myself returning to it again and again during my lifetime. Each time your return to the pages of this book, you'll find yourself forming new insigts and opinions of your own on the subject matter. It's one of those books that will never grow old, because the subject matter regards a lifetime's worth of experiences.

Truly refreshing. This is a much needed book, emphasizing the stillness and quiet of life to find solutions, which is a ready welcome into our hectic modern day society.

I highly recommend this book. This was a great read, very informative and lots of fun. I especially loved the Hollywood insiders input of Jennifer Young the daughter of an Oscar winning actor. The first kiss and tell with a life's lesson to be learned. This book is definitely not shy, it names names but hey if you're left out how hot is your career?? How much closer can you get into Hollywood. I know buy this book.. you will NOT be disappointed. Worth every penny and then some!!! Could not put it down!! 5 out of 5 stars The Best Read!.......2007-01-11

This book is a third in a series of women hooking up with Hollywood Entertainment and sharing their stories. Gave me a clearer insight into how decadent Hollywood really is.

3 out of 5 stars Is that it?.......2006-12-25

I was very disappointed in this book. Yes its a fast read, yes it is trashy, but truly a disappointment. I read the first book, "You'll Never Make Love in This Town Again" and really enjoyed it, loved the name dropping of male celebs that use call girls. I was expecting the same type of book when I saw this one, but NOT. Chapter 2 in the book is written by a publicist of a porn company, a totally wasted chapter, since I had no idea who she was talking about and no pictures to identify people. The last chapter is written by Jennifer, daughter of a hollywood actor and real estate agent. It basically dealt totaly with Heidi Fleiss. The only big names were Brad Pitt and Matt Leblanc, both before they were famous.

If you want to read a fast trashy read, then buy it, if you want substance, dont.

2 out of 5 stars Don't pay full price.......2006-12-12

Quick, trashy read, but holy cow was it poorly written. The second chapter (the publicist for the porn company) was a total waste of time. It was fun finding out about some of the Hollywood hot shots who hire hookers (Dan Ackroyd?? Matt LaBlanc? GEORGE LUCAS????!) but mostly it makes me glad I'm not part of that world.

1 out of 5 stars Total waste of money.......2006-12-08

I read (skimmed) this book in 2 days- if you like reading about self-absorbed,spoiled shallow people,go for it. Wish I had waited and read the reviews before spending money on this.

4 out of 5 stars Conflicting feelings.......2007-04-14

I walked away from this book with conflicting views about it and its contents.
On one hand, I felt very sorry for the girls about some of the experiences they had, but one of the girls still seemed somewhat smug about the sexual experiences she had with certain celebrities and considering the fact that she said she had suffered so much , that kind of dampened the effect of the horrific things she went through.
Another thing is that 3 of the girls kept going on in their sections about how sexy and beautiful they were or how hot their bodies were or how hot and sexy they looked at any given moment.

I'm sure that they are all beautiful girls-I think its a given that prostitutes to the stars would have to be very attractive-it got kind of grating hearing it repeated over and over again.

I think its sad the way they allowed themselves to be used and degraded for so long , but I do admire them for writing this book as a cautionary tale for young women though.

Although every girls story was a sad one,Liza stirred my sympathy the most.
I hope they are all doing well now.

3 out of 5 stars A quick read, somewhat sensational but fails in the end........2007-02-09

I didn't buy this book, but read it quickly at the local thrift shop. I felt sorry for these girls when I started reading this book, but the feeling mostly left me near the end of it. These girls wanted to be famous, rich and successful in Hollywood. I believe one should follow his or her dreams, but do so wisely. The key word here is wisely. To make it in Hollywood or anywhere else you need talent, hard work and persistence. Hollywood is a buisness and they are not going to hire people who will not make them money. Thats the bottom line truth. You dont make it in Hollywood or anywhere else by offering sexual favors and being used. All you end up with is a loss of dignity, anger and mental scars. What is telling about this account is how these girls seemed to enjoy what they were doing. They endured some traumatic situations but they never left doing sexual favors. This is what makes me think it was written more for sex appeal than truth. No one is stopping these girls from getting out of this nightmare. They could have packed up and left town, gone to school, gotten help from drug rehabs in L.A. and other alternatives. Instead they go from one rotten experience to the other. I dont buy their claim they couldnt get out because they were feeding their drug habit. They eventually got out. So why not sooner than later? Their stories come out as mostly self indulgent. That is, I can't get what I want, so I'm going to turn to prostitution and drugs. Its only after a lot of horrible experiences that they decide to lead a normal life. This implies they would do anything to make it in Hollywood and when all else fails, they stoop to lead a normal life. This is why it comes off as sounding mostly pathetic. What stunned me somewhat is the arrogance of these "celebrities." Its ironic that these celebrities are used by groupies and the media among others for their own ends. Groupies sleep with them for example, to get bragging rights. They couldn't care less about them. Thats why they're one night stands. I know about Hollywood, having been involved with it in one way or another. I won't say more than that. If you can't make it in hollywood then do the smart thing and GET OUT! At least you will save your dignity and sanity. You won't waste your time in dealing with bottom feeders and sharks.

4 out of 5 stars disturbingly fascinating!.......2006-11-10

This is not something I would have chosen to read--my book club picked it. It was disturbingly interesting. It was like passing a car wreck--you hate that you want to look. It's gossip about the sex lives of celebrities we see regularly on TV. The women telling the story took lie detector tests and private investigators back up their stories. If I read more books like this, I will have a hard time watching TV!!

4 out of 5 stars Before there was Superhead.......2005-10-19

...there was these girls. It was a very sad story about "regretful" hoes who don't in the end seem truly sorry for having been hoes. Some girls are born to be hoes and that's just a fact. They tell us about who's good in bed and who's wierd/nasty and who's wack. Its not a book you'd go looking to buy but if you walked by it in a store and saw it you'd want to check it out. I read this when I was young and i learned a lot about the ways of the world. I do believe at least one of the girls who had a section in this book seemed upset with herself for her past, but I got the feeling the others would do it all over the same way.

i'd like to change this to 3.5 stars

3 out of 5 stars Victims?.......2005-05-12

I don't know. Am I really supposed to feel sorry for these girls? Sure, one of them was definately abused as a young teen, but for the most part these girls were not victims of men. They were their own worst enemies. They chose to become high priced call girls. They brag about the perks, the money, the drugs. And then they complain b/c the men didn't have "feelings" for them. Uh, they are call girls. It IS all about sex. It IS all about their sexy bodies. This book is supposed to make us aware of the pitfalls of prostitution. I just see the pitfalls of stupidity. They willingly spent their money on drugs. No one forced them to blow (literally) their money. They weren't beaten/forced into prostitution by sick fathers/boyfriends. They were beautiful young girls who willingly used their bodies to gain entry to celebrities, money, parties, drugs. And now I'm supposed to feel sorry for them? Whatever. It was entertaining reading, but didn't dredge up the sympathy that it was supposed to.
