John Robbin's book Health at 100 is one of the finest books I've read on living a healthy, vibrant life. Based on his own life experience and more particulary on the extensive research around the longest lived and healthiest, happiest people on the planet it is a must read for any person, at any age and stage of life, seeking sound,commensense input on living a healthy life. Very well written and engaging I was truely reinspired the whole book through. I have purchases copies for family and friends.
John's watershed book "Diet For A New America" was the catalyst, 20 years ago, for me becoming a Vegan Vegetarian. This is every bit as profound and compelling. John A Wood, Darlington, Western Australia
Good nutrition advice.......2007-09-19
The first part of the book dealing with nutrition and exercise is unobjectionable, if a bit repetitive and rambling at times. Many people in the West could adopt a much more healthy lifestyle without too much trouble. But the part of the book dealing with love and happiness is straight out of the 1960's. Simply put, in the societies Robbins studied, where people live in isolated mountain and valley enclaves, people probably had little choice but to eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Furthermore, in their isolation they were able to live in relatively peaceful and simple societies, where love and fellowship were common. But the rest of the world does not, can not, and will not operate this way. The second half of the book contains simply too much politically leftist, feel-good gobbledygook. Good book on diet and exercise but four stars overall.
Fascinating - Important - Hopeful.......2007-09-09
I listened to this book on CD in my car. I don't know if I could have gotten through reading it but listening to it is just FASCINATING. The information in this book is both sobering and hopeful. It has changed how I view aging for myself and all Americans. As John Robbins tells us, we are living longer but suffering longer too. The information he reports from his massive study is how we can ensure vitality, energy and love soooooooooooo much longer into our elder years than we experience as a nation now. This book has changed my life and I've already handed the CDs over to someone I care for. Buy it.
Scientific Proof for Vegetarian Lifestyle.......2007-08-30
John Robbins has done it again. "Healthy at 100" presents studies of the world's longest-lived peoples, finding that -- despite their wide geographical separation -- they share certain lifestyle traits in common: They all have a largely vegetarian diet; they all live lightly on the land, in harmony with their environment; they all live physically active lives, even into their 100's; they all value and revere their elders; and they all have strong spiritual traditions. Oh, and they are happy. They have simple, low-stress lives. They have little sickness -- certainly none of the chronic illnesses -- like arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer -- that we in the West succumb to by the thousands, and take for granted as a part of aging. And they don't war with their neighbors. Surely we could all learn powerful lessons from this book. I wish everyone would read John Robbins' books. We would have healthier, happier, more peaceful lives; and we would live longer in the bargain!

This book was recommended to me by Physicians from California as well as New England as one of the best guides for any cancer patient to take positive steps to regain her health and well being... It is a simple read, filled with wonderful factual information, scientific findings, and easy steps to take every day to improve your health through the foods you choose and those you eliminate, meditation, exercise,yoga, QiQong or Tai Chi, relationships, etc. John Robbins describes the communities of longest lived peoples who enjoy a quality lifestyle free from disease. In 1994 I visited Vilcabamba, Ecuador near the Peruvian border with my daughter, not knowing its significance during the visit I was amazed to see such healthy men and women in their 80's, 90's and 100's ..I watched an 84 year old woman climb up the hillside of an Andean mountain carrying wood on her back for a nearby Inn. She was not winded, had beautiful long black hair, no gray, all her own teeth and no glasses.. After deliverying her bundle, she had a bit to drink and sprang into a dance with some of the local musicians, then went back the way she came.. something she did twice a day.. Wherever we were in this community we heard people singing while they worked, while they walked, and while they cooked...People treated each other with great respect and consideration, smiles were everywhere as we saw wonderful relationships within their community...Just the way John Robbins described in his book.. I highly recommend these books to anyone who has a severe illness; who is interested in understanding how to improve their health or that of their children .. especially anyone whose children have allergies...
This book is a winner...it helps you respect your body, its ability to regenerate and gives one pause on how you envision your own life's journey

An Escape from America's Toxic Lifestyle.......2006-09-18
America isn't a very safe place to live.
I'm not talking about crime rates, but about death rates, or more specifically health expectancy rates, which is the length of time a person can expect to live in good health, living independently and productively with a sound mind and body.
The United States ranks 24th, dead last among all developed countries.
Why? What is so toxic about the American lifestyle?
Well, the old saying goes, if you want to spot a counterfeit, go study a genuine dollar bill.
Likewise, if you want to spot what's wrong with America, why not go study the healthiest people on Earth?
Well, that's what two brothers, one a physician and one an anthropologist, have been doing for the past decade in the islands of Okinawa, studying over 400 centenarians--people over 100 years old. And not decrepit, demented shells over 100 either-- people still living in their homes, gardening, walking to market daily, chatting with friends.
Why are they living so long? Why are their bodies on almost every biochemical measure 20 years younger or more than equivalent American bodies?
That's the subject of the book The Okinawa Program, and a fascinating read it is. The authors both try to describe the health and lifestyle of the Okinawan culture, try to explain what is healthy about it, and then how to incorporate it into our lifestyle.
The distinctives that the authors bring out chapter by chapter are a healthy primarily vegetarian diet, regular exercise, a low-pressure lifestyle, use of meditation and other forms of stress-reduction, a close supportive social network, and their "spirituality" which is mostly positive and optimistic in nature.
The book itself is well-written and documented as far as this genre goes. It's only downfall (also common to the genre) is tunnel-vision. The authors' enthusiasm for all things Okinawan rarely points out anything negative at all about the culture, to the point that you wonder how objective they really are. Beyond that, they often downplay the very tenuous nature of drawing conclusions about looking backwards and trying to figure out why things are a certain way-- you can use common sense and a little science to make a good guess that eating foods high in flavinoids may extend life, but limited science plus common sense has led us down the wrong path many a time before.
Another major point to be made is that these non-Christian authors cannot perceive the difference between mere religion (which they apparently believe is generically good for both its placebo like effect on the human body and possibly tapping into some generic higher power) vs. a genuine relationship with the genuine God.
Of course, this draws a rather brutal line in the sand for those of us who do name the name of Christ. If our lives have truly been touched by the living God, then why are we dying by the droves in our gluttony and physical laziness and frantically paced American lifestyles, while people who do not know the true God over the ocean are living lives which I suspect more closely model what Christ would have us live? Food for thought, and a worthwhile book to read and ponder.

Proof that lifestyle matters when it comes to longevity.......2005-11-25
This has got to be one of the most well-researched books on health and longevity that I've read in a long time. Based on a landmark study on the people of Okinawa (Japan), the authors outline the preventative lifestyle techniques that keep the elders of Okinawa healthy well into old age and with lower rates of disease and disability than here in the West.
Also highly recommended is the book The Okinawa Diet Plan, as this is more specifically geared towards those trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy body weight. Definitely two books that belong in the home library of anyone seriously interested in health and longevity.

Good conclusion supported by long arguement.......2007-08-23
As I read through Thomas' book, I was struck by two things. First that he has offered a new way of looking at the human life span by creating new 'ages' that describe our lives far better than simply childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. I applaud this introduction. The second aspect that struck me was the enormous amount of support he included in the book. While I became impatient with it, I realized it was because he was writing to someone who had already realized why the human race purposefully includes a period of physical lessening that is essential for the general survival. The wisdom that becomes apparent during this time is the key. However, the book is obviously also written for those who need help in understanding this. So, while it is long, the final conclusions are worthwhile.

While we search for the fountain of youth in a jar, needle or scalpel, we overlook the secret powers of growing older. "Youth accustoms us to running ever faster and jumping ever higher, and the prospect of change in the opposite direction fills us with a cold dread." We are unprepared for the things age presents. We do not want to adapt to changes in our body. As we age, our muscles weaken and we must learn to adjust, not just once, but many times. Senior adults do not report as much depression as youth, possibly because they do learn to adapt to changes in their body and circumstances.
Geriatrician William H. Thomas, M.D., discusses many aspects of aging, including eldercare. Thomas champions the elderly, insisting on respect. The thought of living/dying in a nursing home is frightening for most people and yet it looks inevitable to them. Thomas offers viable alternatives such as a Green House. A Green House cultivates a warm, inviting place for seniors to live. Elders are encouraged to be self-sufficient.
"What Are Old People For?," by William H. Thomas, M.D., is a timely book. This is an aging society. The information presented is simple, easy-to-read, and needed. Thomas demonstrates his great understanding and respect for elderhood. He offers hope and optimism. This book confronts the myths of aging. Thomas encourages humans to embrace all stages of life, not just youth. He encourages readers to become more conscious of the contributions that elders make. This book should be read by everybody!
Must read if you plan on getting older.......2007-05-28
This book opened my eyes to misconceptions I've had about 'old people' and what's good for them. If you have aging parents or will become the aging parent I highly recommend this book. At what age do you plan on giving up control of your life to someone else? I don't plan on it. But at some point the privilege could be taken from you by your 'well meaning' children. Read this book. Talk to your kids. Talk to your parents and grandparents. No one should be stripped of the dignity of living a life long loved by their kids or family members who think they know what's best for us without our input. I myself look forward to being an 'elder' someday and still being able to choose a way of living that works for me.

I found this book extrememly helpful in opening my mind to a new way of looking at aging not only for society in general, but my own! I was left with positive feelings about the future. That is exciting! The book made a great gift for several of my aging friends. Definitely worth reading!

The first sentence of Dr. Spock's "Baby And Child Care" does a good job of summarizing my attitude toward aging and longevity: "Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do." We are immersed in a shimmering sea of conflicting ideas and attitudes about aging and it is not surpirsing that people's feelings about aging can be complicated and conflicting. It is for this reason that I have done my best to stake out a "Common Sense" approach to thinking about the impact aging is likely ot have on our society and how that influence can be turned to the advantage of people of all ages.
This book derives its central argument from recent progress made in the fields of biology, mythology, sociology, and philosophy, but its heart belongs to the simplest observations of the way we live now. I recognize that some experts will find fault with some of its specifics. As a devout generalist, I believe that the truth of an important argument can be sustained even when fault can be found with certain of its specifics and I hope that you will agree.
It has been said that people are not interested in books about aging but, in fact, people are always interested in learning more about matters that concern their lives and well-being. The questions that revolve around aging and our longevity increasingly rise to that level. Issues related to aging define some of the most important risks and opportunities that confront our society. We live in an exciting time. There is a new old age waiting to be discovered, ready to be explored. Aging and the aged are not, as so often supposed, the cause of our problems--they are and have always been the source of the answers we need. Our longevity is ready freed from the shackles of prejudice and fear. It can and it will save our world.

Lacking the depth to reveal any true wisdom.......2007-09-13
When someone applies their talents to an almost sacred subject as "The Wisdom of the World's Oldest People" you expect more. You expect depth. You expect to find some actual and tangible pieces of this great wisdom hinted at in the title. Instead this work feels superficial having too little substance and too much of the author's opinions and suppositions.
Many of these stories are presented as if there was some kind of injustice done, as if the reader is somehow responsible and owes the subject some apology for living such a life. If these centenarians were a bit more articulate I believe they would profoundly disagree.
One hundred years ago life was both different and more difficult, but it was universally so. Almost everyone lived different versions of the lives presented. The author seems almost unaware of this fact, lamenting imagined injustices rather than celebrating the richness and fullness of the lives lived.

Great book. I couldn't put it down. Very inspirational. Each of the stories were only a few pages long which made it nice if you didn't have a lot of time on your hands at one sitting. The author gives you complete freedom to come to your own conclusions as to why these special people lived so long. I never write reviews, but went on-line to buy another book like it and just decided to brag about it. It is a super book to put in your on your coffee table or guest room.

I enjoyed the book very much. The essays in the beginning of the book were outstanding and reading a short bio of each of the supercentenarians was fascinating. Though they were from all over the globe, they all shared many of the same habits and spirituality. And since the book was edited by a photgrapher, the pictures really captured the essence of each elder. Overall, a very life affirming, positive and spiritual book.

Very good book. Worth the read but I had hoped for more. I would have liked to hear more insights on what each wished they had done in life (regrets), what they were glad they had done, maybe more advice to pass on to us. I realize many were failing in health but still maintained their spirit. I suspect interviewing subjects "over 90" instead of 110 may have offered us more. Good photographs. Again, worth the read and touching at times.

quite informative with a general theme (keep stress to a minimum).
These people who live from 106 to 118 are awesome and some
of them look wonderful. I am glad the author traveled the world.

While this book provided some general information about lifestyle and local culture, it lacked any serious details required by someone looking to retire abroad. In particular the tax information was at best irrelevant and at worst incorrect and misleading. Many of the Additional Resources and Useful Websites are out of date.
Overall this book provides a useful starting point for those considering retirement abroad, but lacks sufficient detail to make it a truly useful resource.

This guide has general tips and contacts for what are the top overseas retirement destinations for Americans. For each country there are suggested locations and real estate options that would be of use to retirees. Locations that have substantial US/UK populations are also noted, for the not-quite-so adventurous. As stated above, this work is most useful for someone who's maybe thinking about living overseas, and wants to look at the pro's and cons. OR, convincing your "Significant Other" that yes you can actually live at that great vacation spot on Crete....
Anyone who's already deep into planning for such a move, or has spent considerable time overseas would probably already know most of the information provided here.

This book is a feast for the eyes and senses. Composed of photographs of doors in the town of San Miguel de Allende, the writer/photographer,Robert de Gast, transports the reader to this incredibly beautiful place.How can mere doors have anything to say? Well, these doors "say" volumes about the charm and elegance of this historical Mexican town. One wants to go there...to walk up to one of those doors...to touch the exquisite brass knockers ...to knock! And, to be let in.Each door is different. Each door is unique. The colors, textures and carvings on the doors add to their individuality and charm. Vamos!

Having been to many of the places covered in this book, I was saddened to note that the writers appear to have not done their homework. The information is the sort that you could obtain by writing to the countrys Embassys. The book also appears to be aimed at the High End Market. The main reason for living in another country when you retire is to make your retirement income get "more bang for the buck." All the authors dialog about $700 to $1,900/month rents made me wonder what their perspective on retirement haven's is. Their internet resource guide was off and needs to be updated. Buy this book for general information purposes only.
The Best Book I've Seen........1999-11-30
This is the best book that I've seen that explains the pros and cons of top foreign retirement locations.Even if you're not ready to retire, the book is a fascinating explanation of what foreign retirement life is like. These havens aren't specific sites, such as retirement communities: instead, the book provides general information about various countries that are considered ideal for retirement. Most explanations include recommended living areas and places to avoid. Real estate, both rental and ownership, is thoroughly covered. Renting is generally recommended, at least initially. Some countries make real estate ownership for foreigners impractical or impossible. In other countries, the authors explain the easy procedures and how to avoic real estate rip-offs. Journey with a poor leader.......2007-04-13
I had ordered 12 copies for a discussion group. We were unanimous in our feeling that Dimidjian was an extremely poor interviewer. She elicited only meager superficial overviews about people whose lives had great depth and dimension. Some of the interviews, such as Frank Ostaseski and Rodney Smith were excellent because the interviewees offered their insights, wisdom and missions in spite of her often silly questions. People like Ram Dass and Thich Nhat Hanh were dreadfully underserved by her. Having simultaneously read the book "In Sweet Company" by Margaret Wolff, also a compilation of interviews, it only punctuated the inadequacies of Dimidjian.
I'm giving the book the over-rating of 3 stars because some of these people are worth reading if you try to ignore the author.

Dimidjian found that four themes stood out in interviews she had with recognized spiritual leaders during her sabbatical from teaching. These are: interest in the subject of aging is growing as the Baby-Boom generation, to which the author belongs, ages; the integration of ideas from Eastern and Western cultures is continuing to grow; living and dying are intertwined; and lastly, what we "know" is never complete and is not in itself fulfilling. Ram Dass, Thich Nhat Hanh, Sister Chan Khong, Norman Fischer, and Michael Eigen are among the nine she interviewed. Seeing the interviews as extensions of her role as a teacher, Dimidjian helps to shape the interviews by thoughtful questions and perceptive comments.

Professor Buckingham has certainly addressed a timely subject. This is a must read for every medical and public health student interested in the health issues facing our worlds population. Once you think about it becomes obvious that the best way to come
to rational conclusions as to what to eat is to study those societies
where people are healthy and live the longest rather than studying sickness and cures. Of course sickness and cures and fast-foods are a multi-billion dollar business whereas eating healthy foods only benefits those who eat it. Highly recommend this book (it has some really good recipes) and also The China Study by T. Colin Campbell another book based on results.

I found this book to be well-written and informative. I liked how the author started the book with a broad-based look at the world's cultures that have the longest living people in them, and then in the second section, broke this information down into the 50 "secrets" that was common to all of them.
I have read several books on improving your lifespan and your health during this time, but this book is one of the most "usable" in my opinion. The information in this book can easily be put into practice by anyone.
In short...the book was well worth every penny I spent on it.

What can we learn from the world's longest living people? Plenty!
We all know people who have gotten older and yet they've seemed to slow down the process of aging. I met a woman the other day that looked like she was maybe 60 years old, but she was actually 90 years old! Her son is a friend of mine and he looked like he could be her brother.
It's amazing how these human bodies of ours are such resilient structures that some people can live much longer than others. Don't you wish you could get to the very essence of what makes some people live longer, healthier lives? What are those deep-down secrets to extending life just a few more years?
Well, look no more than "50 Secrets Of The World's Longest Living People" written by Sally Beare for the answers. Beare is a self-taught nutritionist whose health was greatly improved after a visit to a nutritionist following some rather strange physical reactions happening in her body. Once those conditions were improved by changes in her diet, she set out to discover exactly what people need to do to improve their health through diet and lifestyle changes.
Part One of this book takes you to the five "longevity hotspots" in the world where people live long, healthy lives without the need for a prescription pill to cure every ailment under the sun. The pharmaceutical industry doesn't want you to read "50 Secrets Of The World's Longest Living People" because it exposes their public scam for what it is. But you would be wise to take a closer look at what people in these various countries (and no, the United States is not one of the "hotspots") are doing to extend the length and quality of their lives.
Beare lays it all out for you in simple-to-read language with a convenient "Dos" and "Don'ts" list at the end of each chapter on the "hotspots." You'll quickly notice a lot of similarities in these lists that will zoom in specifically on what we all can do to improve our health and, thus, lengthen our lifespan.
Although I am an advocate of a low-carb lifestyle change after my nearly 200-pound weight loss on low-carb, not everything in Part Two of this book matches up with what I believe is best for me nutritionally. But these 50 principles are not all meant to be followed word-for-word in their entirety. Instead, you should select the ones that fit into your lifestyle needs and apply them appropriately.
Some of the ones I took notice of that coincide with people who are livin' la vida low-carb include eating 5-7 servings of fruits and vegetables daily, use hemp for its fiber and essential fatty acids, eat organic goat's cheese, consume eggs, eat the good fats found in fish, have a handful of nuts and seeds daily, choose extra virgin olive oil, keep aging away with a salad a day, find long life in a bowl of berries, eat yogurt for very friend bacteria, eat more organic and avoid "frankenfoods," avoid the pastries, drink lots of water -- the most essential nutrient, take vitamin supplements especially CoQ10, exercise daily, believe in God, laugh often, help other people, avoid the Standard American Diet (SAD for short), get adequate sleep, and much, much more!
Every single one of the "50 Secrets Of The World's Longest Living People" are expanded upon in great detail by Beare as she shows you how to implement them into your own life to help you live longer, too!
Finally, in Part Three of the book, Beare shares how you can put all of her advice together to work for you. You can call this the "Cliff's Notes" section of the book where she basically summarizes everything you have already read in the previous chapters, including tips and actual recipes from those infamous "hotspots" where people live longer. You will want to reference this book again and again as you seek to live a long, healthy, and prosperous life.
"50 Secrets Of The World's Longest Living People" is a book that should be in every home, school, and library in the United States of America. If it was, then I assure you that radical changes would take place in obesity, sickness, prescription drug use, sugar consumption, the fast food industry and so much more. Once you take a peek into the lives of those who have found the secrets to extending life, you'll never want to go back to your old ways again!
