4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Christian Virtue........2007-08-04

This books is a good introduction to the four cardinal virtues and the theological virtues. It uses the Catechism of the Catholic Church and personal experience to show how important developing virtues (habits for doing what is good with ease, promptness, and joy) to live a happy and successful life. The section on the theological virtues is good (supernatural habits which bring us into union with God). I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars For Women and Girls TOO! Virtue rocks "Values": how&why .......2006-11-21

This is great on audiotape too. The most down to earth, sensible, practical book on the subject. A vital necessity to growing in common sense and wisdom. How does one exercise prudence? justice? charity? While every father needs this book or tape, every mom will benefit from reading and listening over dad's shoulders. It is a treasure chest that you will refer to often so don't hide it from yourself and consider this as a simple, yet significant way to improve your corner of the world: give copies to those you love and know. We've received abundant praises for this and when lending it out, found that it was lent out to another family and another. We ended up buying 2 copies due to the late return.

5 out of 5 stars The Must Have Book for Coaches!.......2006-06-14

This is the must have book for coaching boys sports. You can take the virtues described in Tim's book and transform into team talks. There is a group that advocates this book and has done wonders with sporting teams. [...] and see how they use virtue talks to spark the faith.

5 out of 5 stars Faith Formation.......2006-03-04

As a book for our Men's Group the book is very helpful to teach us what virtues are to be about. The implemenation of the scripture and catechesis are powerful and I can't say enough good things about this small study book. Thank you and God Bless.

5 out of 5 stars Real substance, good advice, scriptural inspiration..........2005-06-11

Gray writes, "Today it is more common to hear about values than virtues. Current thought is that society would be safe, healthy, and happy, if only we could instill proper values into people. Values-based moral education programs exemplify the modern conviction that morality is nothing other than the art of making good choices, where we are guided entirely by one's own values. One could critique this approach to morality on philosophical grounds, but my criticism is simple and to the point. The problem is that values fall short when it comes to making men moral. Having good values is a fine thing, but the battle of morality is not so much about *knowing* what is right as it is *doing* what is right. The difference between wanting to do the good and actually doing it is tremendous. Thus, many men who commit adultery know what they are doing is wrong (no need for clarification), but they are unfaitful despite their values."

From this starting point, Gray walks through the cardinal and theological virtues (with his typical scriptural focus), explaining how we must acquire, exercise, and grow each of them. He reviews the challenges, and offers advice on overcoming them. This is a nice alternative to the pop-psychology that passes as Christian self-help in the bookstores, and has the added benefit of being rather inspiring. Chapters are followed by group discussion questions. Highly Recommended. 119pp.

Book Description

When Robert Quinn's son Garrett went away to college, he was frustrated and wondered how he could shake off his feelings of depression and anxiety. It was a transition that was difficult for both father and son. Bob finally realized that Garrett didn't need to be fixed; he needed his father's love and support. Bob invited Garrett to exchange letters, and together they embarked on an extraordinary journey. Their letters explore myriad topics— how to find purpose, live with increased meaning and power, and how we can clarify our core values. But the most important lesson learned is that human progress begins when individuals choose to transform themselves.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars How to be your best in business and life!.......2002-06-15

I really enjoyed this book! Written in the form of letters of advice to his son, a struggling college freshman, the 9 lessons that Quinn outlines in this book apply to anyone going through a transition at any age in any situation. Choose to make a difference, look internally, connect with others...Anyone who is struggling with transition at any age--in business or in life--will appreciate the lessons outlined in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring!.......2002-05-22

I found Letters to Garrett to be a truly wonderful book and recommend it highly. When I started, I thought I wouldn't be able to identify with Garrett that much. I'm older than he is and know pretty much where I'm going in life. I was surprised then about how often I saw myself in Garrett. It pointed out that we face transitions much more often in our lives than we might think. It's not just the adolescence into adulthood, becoming a parent, changing jobs, mid-life crisis etc. Recognizing transitions when we're faced with them (rather than in retrospect) helps us navigate times of change and make better decisions.

Book Description

The respected, world-renowned New York Times bestselling psychic takes on an intriguing new subject—the psychic abilities of children. Sylvia Browne shares profound stories of how children can be channels to the Other Side.

A child's world is comprised of extraordinary things—vivid imaginations, imaginary friends, Zen-like naïveté, and a heightened sense of good and evil. In fact, it is now in vogue to proclaim that certain children are a direct channel to God, calling them Indigo Children or Crystal Children. But psychic Sylvia Browne knows these are merely fashionable labels. She recognizes that all children have unusual psychic gifts and abilities—including each one of us—but society has been conflicted about those gifts, at times cherishing them and often stifling them over the centuries.

Sylvia Browne writes from personal experience. After her own psychic abilities were revealed at age three, her mother tolerated but never encouraged her startling talent. Browne's own son would exhibit psychic abilities of his own as a toddler, which she fully embraced and supported. What Browne has learned over a lifetime is that psychic gifts are present at incredibly tender ages; they are, in her view, special blessings from God. Some children learn to develop them while others are pressed to ignore them. In Psychic Children she illuminates the phenomenon, issuing a call to society for more understanding and acceptance of these remarkable children.

While reading Psychic Children, I enjoyed the personal stories mothers wrote about their 3 year old children. I would like to read more of these stories about older children.

5 out of 5 stars Another HIT from Sylvia Browne.......2007-08-28

I have not yet completed the book but so far I love it!
I am very happy with this book! It is GREAT if you have
children around the house or if you are around children
very much.

Reading this book gave me extra knowledge in being able
to know what to watch for and ask for with my two
granddaughters. I only wish I had this knowledge with
my OWN two children!

For example my 1+ month old granddaughter is always
looking above my right shoulder with an "awe" look on her
face and even though she is "supposed" to be too young to
really smile.. she kicks her legs happily, smiles and
keeps her eyes in the location above my shoulder. I look
behind me and also say hello to whoever is there.

Regarding my 5yr old granddaughter she tells me about
"things that happened before" and also "future" things to
watch out for. It is amazing how much knowledge these
youngsters have. All you have to do is ask the right
questions with the toddlers, which Sylvia Browne helps
you with, and with the infants what to LOOK out for.

Sylvia has also helped me with my 5yr old
granddaughter's reoccuring "nightmares".
I love the prayers she has given to help
children understand "that was a past life,
you are no longer living that life" and how to "let go"
of these fears.

Thank you Sylvia for another HIT!
With Love and admiration,
SM

Book Description

John Powers' classic comic novel of the 1960s Catholic subculture stars Eddie Ryan, a Chicago boy who learns about the important questions in life in his years at an all-boys Catholic school on Chicago's South Side. He views it all through the prism of his Catholic mentality, which often deepens the mystery but sometimes clarifies it.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?.......2007-03-28

Through the lens of a Catholic upbringing, Eddie Ryan begins his recollections from age twelve. I tumbled with laughter on every page right up through his high school graduation. The vividly painted account of his emotional responses during this time period is hilarious. John R. Powers has a way with language. With very few words, he is able to hit the laugh button repeatedly. This is a quick read and a gem!

5 out of 5 stars Not everyone understands . . . . .......2006-06-17

The earlier posts which don't give high ratings are probably the ones who "just don't get" the Chicago way. Unless you grew up in Chicago or its surrounding suburbs, you won't find this book amusing. Several of my friends, self-proclaimed "victims" of the Chicago Catholic School system, greatly enjoyed this book. Unless you are high-brow or artsy to begin with, you probably won't understand or get the gist of this tome. For the above average, this book is an insightful read.

A+

1 out of 5 stars I barely made it through the first thirty pages........2006-02-05

If Amazon had a Half Star, or better yet, a No Star rating I would have used the latter. Powers spends the first seven pages talking about his pimple dilemma then goes on to his tediously constructed random subjects with shallow character development laced with corny humor. I get the feeling throughout the book of the author's desperate attempt to be funny.

5 out of 5 stars One of his best.......2005-05-30

Powers is a brilliant, witty, hilarious writer and speaker. Now, where are the rest of his books?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The PERFECT GUIDE TO METROID ZERO MISSION!.......2005-05-19

Of course it's perfect, it's Nintendo Power. As someone who collects strategy guides, I often tend to get a hold of even the guides I don't need. You shouldn't need a guide for Metroid Zero Mission, but if you find yourself stuck, there's no reason why this one can't help you. The walkthrough is perfect, the secrets divine and the illustrations are grand.

The guide isn't very big, which is okay because Metroid Zero isn't a very big game. We begin with all those game basics because some people won't read the manuel, so the guide has you covered. They have all the items you'll obtain and the powerups in this section as well.

Then we have a quick map appendix. This is NOT meant to be a guide through the game. These maps are simply for those who want to find all the powerups. They even label which page you need to turn to to figure out how to get it.

It's the walkthrough that makes this guide incredible. Anyone who has the Metroid Fusion guide will know the basic layout. The maps each have a number at each important location. That same number is called in the text, and it tells you what to do. The boss strategies are simple and easy to follow (it isn't like Metroid Zero Mission is a hard game anyway).

Once we get past the walkthrough the game takes you into an expert way of going through the game. By that I mean they give you the lowdown of the 15% Mission Completion and a Speed Walkthrough. Now of course, those expecting a map for the 15% completion must be crazy! After all, the guide assumes you'll attempt the 15% Challenge and Speed Walkthrough after you've already mastered the game. They work though, so don't worry so much.

Now, the Golden part of the guide. When you unlock the original Metroid, this guide has a walkthrough for it! I know it sounds strange, but the first Metroid was a gem (and I enjoyed playing the classic Metroid much more than Zero Mission). To have a walkthrough handy was perfect. Of course, if you already have the Metroid Prime Guide by Nintendo Power, you won't really need the walkthrough for the original Metroid here (it's the exact same thing).

The guide also tells you how to get all the endings.

Really, while it isn't needed, the guide is absolutely perfect. If you get stuck, this guide will help you out. You really shouldn't need it though.

Book Description

Raising Christian Children in a Secular World gently reminds us to turn to the ultimate source and authority on raising our children: The Bible. Bible passages are used to illustrate necessary life qualities that we should be developing in our children. Qualities that, when nurtured and valued, will help our children live lives filled with great peace and blessings. Raising Christian Children in a Secular World helps parents claim their authority and responsibility. Parents will find, when turning to the Word of God, that there are no inconsistent messages. Developing characteristics in our children that include joy, gratitude, perseverance, responsibility, and patience are all steadfastly found in Scripture. It is no coincidence that these traits will ultimately help our children become successful, moral, and compassionate adults. Consider God's immeasurable promises in Psalm 91:14-16. "Whoever clings to me I will deliver; whoever knows my name I will set on high. All who call upon me I will answer. I will be with them in distress; I will deliver them and give them honor. With length of days I will satisfy them and show them my saving power." It is never too early, or ever too late, to turn to God's Word in raising and caring for our children.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring book!.......2006-07-30

Being a parent in this day and age can be difficult when your values don't mirror those of society. There are times when it would just be much easier to "give in" -- after all, if so many people think the trappings of society are right, why beat your head against the wall? Parents are under a lot of pressure, sometimes even from their own spouses, to let little things slide, but those little things add up to big ones in a hurry!
Cheryl's book offers the inspiration we parents need to "stick to our guns" and keep on reinforcing the values that we know are important in the long run, in our children's lives. Her references to scripture add even more "authority" and proof that raising Christian children is a right and good aspiration! I recommend it highly!

Cheryl Dickow's book provides many insightful and supportive tips to parents who feel challenged by the conflicting values of our secular world. Many bible passages are included to provide inspiration and biblically based principles to encourage and uplift those of us involved in the task of parenting. Book Description

The concluding novel in John R. Powers's memorable trilogy set in mid-twentieth century South Side Chicago is the poignant tale of an ambitious and gifted young man from a blue-collar neighborhood who struggles to find his place in a world that seems riddled with insincerity. He narrates his bittersweet battles with God, sex, career, and family in a voice that evokes an Irish-Catholic Holden Caufield. The first two novels in Powers's trilogy have also been reissued in the Loyola Classics series.

This book is just a fabulous read. I have always loved the premise of this book. I just like the idea of God actually answering questions. The book is both funny and thoughtful-I'd recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars If I could give this book 10 stars, I would!.......2007-02-28

It's about time that this novel has been reprinted. I bought this book about 25 years ago. In that time, I've read it about 15 times. I cry every time I get to the last chapter. Do yourself a favor. When you buy this book, and you will, buy all of the others in the series. You can't go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book of all time........2007-02-05

This is a book that I have read at least 5 times, and I have purchased many times for friends and family. I feel like I want everyone I know to own a copy of this book. Its a fantastic, heart warming, and touching story, that has some wonderful messages about life. Everyone I have passed it onto feel the same way I do about it. I just love the letters from "God" - our beloved gas station attendant who really knows life and how to live it. I wish there were more books out there like this one.

4 out of 5 stars Still Thumps the Heart After Many Years.......2005-12-11

I read this book when it first came out, and I've re-read it several times since. It never fails to touch me with its innocence, humanity, and humor. If John Powers were my neighbor, I'd bring him a homemade pie!

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book Ever.......2005-11-13

Having grown up in the Chicagoland area there was so much in the book that I could relate to. This book makes me laugh out loud. John Powers has such a wonderful knack for writing about everyday events in the most humorous way. This story about Conroy and his coming of age in Chicago is funny and also very touching with a suprise ending. I have read and reread this book dozens of times and it still makes me laugh and also ponder the meaning of life. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a book with exceptional humor while delivering a very important message about life.

5 out of 5 stars understanding myself.......2007-05-01

After reading Stepping Out of the Bubble a year ago, I went back and read it again for a second time. I was able to pick up even more information this time around that helped me understand and overcome some of my own internal conflicts. This is a book you can read at any point in your life and always find information that pertains to that particular moment. Krehbiel has a way of explaining things that others may consider unexplainable. Whether you are a student, a teacher, or just a guy like me, this book can and will change your life.

5 out of 5 stars A practical resource for better living.......2006-03-27

For me, "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" was reminiscent of the renowned books of author, M. Scott Peck, in the style of presenting profound insights into sensible, easy-to-understand language and clear ideas an average person can relate to. Practicing Licensed Professional Counselor and Nationally Certified Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist and author of "Stepping Out Of The Bubble", James Krehbiel proficiently shares a portion of his expertise, condensing great weight into accessible and workable solutions for a more fulfilling life's plan.

The "bubble" represents our security and comfort zone, but it is also the inner place where we store the pain of our past experiences and the unpleasant reality of that not being made conscious which keeps us bound in unhealthy and self-defeating patterns. Staying within this bubble limits our emotional responsiveness as we numb ourselves to the coexistence even as unresolved issues unconsciously filter forth. To step outside of the bubble is to courageously examine the contents in all honesty and to face life's reality outside of the bubble. Once outside the bubble, one can move forward to experience life in more emotional depth, fullness and passion. "Being a fully functioning individual is about being true to whom you are and letting things be the way they are," explains author, James Krehbiel.

With brilliant and compassionate understanding, Mr. Krehbiel briefly details methods used and pertinent case examples within his therapy practice. "Self-regulation is a goal of therapy. I educate people in the fact that all the answers are ultimately within." "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" strives to do the same, by giving information on how we become trapped in the bubble and how beneficial the making of conscious choices to leave, can be.

Some of the many topics included within this book are: being assertive, characteristics of an "authentic" person, the integration of each of our different personality parts, the difference between true guilt and false guilt, setting boundaries, addictions and addictions to "manic" relationships, awareness (staying in the moment or mindfulness), grounding, honoring one's inner voice, panic attacks, OCD and mood disorders. The section regarding kids and parenting was exceptional, in my opinion, and I found many points about discipline that made much sense. Also appreciated was the section relating to religion (dogma) versus faith (spiritual) as well as what needed to be said about pop culture.

I enjoyed reading "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" and would recommend it to anyone. It is enriching and inspirational.

5 out of 5 stars Gaining Courage to Live Outside of the Bubble.......2006-02-25

James P. Krehbiel's Stepping Out of the Bubble was a fascinating read. I found myself underlining various passages. His explanation of how we get stuck in the bubble (comfort zone), and how we find our way out is powerful. It provided me with hope as I move through my own personal journey. I found myself experiencing an emotional reaction to many of the case examples and concepts he explored. He definitely hit some "hot buttons" in my life. But Mr. Krehbiel also provided specific guidelines and tools for stepping out of the bubble. At one point he says, "Courage can be defined by those who live outside the bubble as opposed to those who live in it. I like to compare stepping out of the bubble to wading into the water."

His chapter which includes ideas on multidimensional thinking is appropriate in today's political climate. He indicates that true dialogue takes into consideration the appreciation for differences in opinions. He makes some profound statements about pop culture's affect on the lives of today's children. He also gives parents tools and resources for assisting their children in bettering their behavior. The book ends with a resounding "yes" to life with a hopeful, powerful way of perceiving and reframing life's problems. This was an excellent book!

5 out of 5 stars My Review of a Great Book.......2006-02-23

"Stepping Out of the Bubble : Reflections On the Pilgrimage of Counseling Therapy by James P. Krehbiel is an amazing and outstanding book that provides help and direction to the many people that are suffering from problems described in this book.

I was amazed at how many of the problems and challenges, that the author writes about, are problems and challenges I have seen many people suffer with.

The counseling theory and practice information in this book provides a direction for people that have a problem and are willing to go to counseling and risk moving forward in their journey toward finding personal growth and development, and eventually stepping out of the bubble.

Many people have problems and challenges that they never seek help for and they and their loved ones continue to suffer. This book goes a long way in bringing the thought of counseling to people and helping people to better understand the counseling process.

To author James P. Krehbiel thank you for writing your great book. I am convinced your book will help many people and because of your book many more people will step out of the bubble. I recommend this book very highly and also feel it would be a great college text.
