This follow up to The HeartMath Solution and Transforming Anger reveals how becoming aware of the heart's innate intelligence can dramatically reduce stress and tension. Based on over thirty years of research showing that it is possible to shift the heart into a "positive rhythm" that signals the brain, causing both of them to synchronize to more effectively respond to stress. In this book, the authors provide readers with the tools to not only respond to stress more resiliently, but to literally transform stress into positive emotions and creative energy. The keys to doing so are the transformative exercises developed by Childre and his team of researchers at the HeartMath Institute. The scientifically-validated techniques they share are easy to understand, and with regular, committed practice, as evidenced by the many illustrative case histories throughout the text, offer many benefits. Far more than just another book on stress management, Transforming Stress offers readers the means to more consciously create joy and contentment in their lives, while regaining the energy and enthusiasm that are normally sapped by life's daily stresses and tension.--Larry Trivieri Jr.
Book Description
Stress.
It's the quintessential buzz word of modern life. It hangs on everyone's lips from the first miles of the morning commute until the screeching alarm clock starts yet another day. Countless articles and studies tell the same story: lives controlled by unmanaged stress end early and none too well. This book describes a simple, straightforward method readers can learn and practice to literally transform stress by shifting the heart's own rhythms.
At the core of the HeartMath method of emotional regulation is the idea that, by focusing on positive feelings such as appreciation, care, or compassion, anyone can create dramatic changes in his or her heart rhythms. These changes precipitate a series of neural, hormonal, and biochemical events that dissipate stress and anger and lead to greater well-being. The benefits from using this system are remarkable and far-reaching: blood pressure drops, stress hormone levels fall, immune system activity increases, and anti-aging hormone levels rise. Through its interactive learning system, this book teaches readers to use the HeartMath method, enabling them to see and experience in real time how thoughts and emotions affect their heart rhythms. It teaches them how to engage their hearts to bring emotion, body, and mind into balance, and helps them stay in a zone of focused clarity, optimal health, and high performance. Changes brought about through this method are fast-acting and long-lasting-the perfect antidote to our chaotic and fast-paced lives.

One of the most surprising musical fads of recent years is the craze for Gregorian chant, a musical form whose recordings were once largely restricted to the pages of the Musical Heritage Society catalog and the output of obscure religious labels. Now chant in its various permutations is big business and something to be greatly hyped by mainstream record companies. Hopping onto the plainsong bandwagon is this book, a handsomely illustrated volume of essays and thoughts on assorted styles of chant, complete with a compact disc of examples tucked into a sleeve in the back. This book should satisfy any curiosity on the subject for most people who are neither monastic nor musicians.

A practical, inspiring and empowering way get in touch with your heart through meditation........2007-05-15
Living from the Heart has altered my perception of what it truly means to be "real" and has had a profound effect on not only how I perceive others but more importantly on how I react to all of life's situations. I've found that through the breath practices alone my life has changed. My energy is double if not triple what it was, my ability to listen to others and really hear what they are saying has increased when I listen with my heart and maintain a full breathing pattern. Add the element breath practices and WOW you have a guaranteed method of changing your energy to match the situation. If you need to be the calm voice of reason in a business meeting where everyone else is charged up and you use the air and earth breaths you can not only see the bigger picture and commonality of everyone's concerns but you can remain calm in the storm and actually calm down everyone in the meeting (both in person and via phone). If you've had a long day and need to get a boost of energy or optimism then the fire breadth will increase your energy. The water breadth is perfect for developing and sending empathy and emotions for not only your closer relationships but also with those you may have just met. I've found that learning to harness the power of your breath can be an extremely powerful tool in business as well as in life.
I have tried many different forms of meditation over the past 24 years and have taken multiple leadership, communication, relationship building and "stress relief" courses yet they only cover bits and pieces of how to effectively listen to your intuition, relate to another person, show empathy and relieve stress. Living from the heart gives you sound, easy to practice and incredibly powerful methods of developing your concentration, intuition, communication with yourself, and guides you to living a heart centered life.
The key to this method of meditation is that it is not just visualization or counting or any of the other methods that take you away from your body and self but rather key practices that will apply to every situation in your life. This book not only teaches you how to meditate but gives you the tools to apply the benefits of mediation to enhance your everyday life. It gives you the tools you need to contact your heart, hear what it says, learn how to breath (which if that is all you learn from this book your life will be greatly enhanced), and to really connect with your spiritual side. The method is based on thousands of years of collective knowledge from multiple religions and spiritual practices blended with the latest in scientific research.
Puran Bair has done an absolutely spectacular job of synthesizing the best practices that many spend a lifetime learning and presenting the knowledge in an easy to understand, easy to practice and incredibly powerful manor that anyone can learn and benefit from.
I've given copies of this book to countless friends. Anyone that wants to learn how to really breath and utilize the power of the breath, develop awareness of their body and heart, increase their body's natural healing capacity and connect back with (or enhance) their spiritual awareness will love this book regardless of religious affiliation (or lack of religious belief).
In addition, those who will benefit are not just those on a spiritual path but anyone that wants to harness the power of their breath...using the square (or diamond) breath is a highly effective way to increase your lung capacity and VO2 Max...useful for runners, atheletes, anyone living in or traveling to high altitudes or basically anyone interested in increasign their stamina, recovering from surgury (takes pressure off your chest), and increases your vitality and health.
The Crest of the Wave of Sufism's Real World Applications in Our time!.......2007-04-05
This book is a groundbreaking work in the sense that most sufi teachings are encapsulated for small groups of followers of one particular Master or Stream of enlightenment, but this work has the currency and immediacy to answer the cry of humanity's illnesses today and provide healing and help in the areas of relationships, health, and character building. I look forward to the publication of the successor volume due out this Sept. 07, and I know that it shall be an even bigger event for readers of this important wisdom school in our time. This book is definitely the crest of the wave of practical healthy steps toward enlightenment and valuable and useful applications for steps toward an enhanced life and increased appreciation for living in these difficult days, eventually leading us back to the source from whence we all came, by unlearning some of the hang-up and attachments holding us back and making us all ill. A great primer for meditation, concentration, and contemplation. Enjoy and welcome home.
A Guide for a full and happy life.......2007-01-08
This book has wisdom from beyond the ordinary realms of everyday life. This gives the reader tools and information to use to take steps "up" in life in order to know what purpose they are here for and to live that with passion. The author is highly knowledgeable and uses both general and specific information and personal stories from many people to bring home the points and importance of using these tools and when to use them. They help with the ordinary challenges of everyday life and open the door to the beyond. Pretty exciting stuff that could enlighten anyone who is seeking more from life.
Living from the Heart is captivating!.......2007-01-08
Living from the Heart is a book that can change your life. Bair writes with great understanding of physiologic principles. He integrates these principles with heart rhythm meditations. This book is methodically written. Each step brings you closer to mastery of the practices of meditation. If you are interested in improving your life, relationships and work, Bair's book is a must read.
Living From the Heart: Life Changing.......2006-12-07
This book and its author have had a more profound impact on my life than any other book that I have ever read. I practice the meditations which it contains daily, and have become very involved in Heart Rhythm Practice. When a friend told me about this book and how much it had impacted him, I had no idea of how powerful it would be in my life! Because of it and the author, I have made changes in my way of being in the world that I would never have thought possible. "Livng from the Heart" provides practical tools for managing daily stress and challenges as well as giving a blueprint for accessing a tangible connection to "The One Heart." For me, this book is priceless.

Book Description
The beat is universal--drumming as a way of communicating with other people, spirits, and self exists around the world and throughout time. And contemporary drumming is thriving! In the neo-pagan community, the most popular festivals and workshops are those that feature drumming circles. In healing centers, nursing homes, women's centers, and schools across the country, people are forming drumming circles. Sacred Beat honors and explores every aspect of drumming--historical, contemporary, and practical.
Customer Reviews:
Let the drumming begin.......2005-02-21
Amazing book!!! It has some of everything that I was looking for: the first part talks to the history, myths and spiritual aspects of drumming. It looks at all sorts of cultures too - Egyptian, Chinese, Native American, African, and others. It's a great overview that gave me ideas of areas where I might want to learn more. Wonderful poems and quotes are sprinkled throughout the book as well. Following this there's a practical section that helps you select a drum that's right for you and there's info on how to care for your drum. My drum had lost some of its tightness during the humid time of the year but there's a paragraph that addresses that specifically so I knew it was normal. The next section talks about drum circles and the different points in the circle. Really neat. It's my first introduction to drum circles. Lots of great lore and history throughout this book.
Really Great book!.......2003-08-14
You ever wanted to know why drums are so important in a pagan circles?. You ever wonder why pagans use drums to reach to the God/Goddess?. Ms. Telesco's book "Sacred Beat" has really filled in the gap of the "why?"..the beat is important to many pagans. A lot of great info and history. A must read for all wiccan/pagans alike, and one of Ms. Telesco's better books on the market today. Well worth the money and time!
Customer Reviews:
Ah, Sunflower Sutra!.......2007-10-02
This slim volume of short essays is a real find, a valuable addition to the growing shelf of Beat literature. The author takes a modest, self-effacing, very personal approach to the sprawling concept of Beat spirituality, and he's all the more convincing for it. Clearly he admires the Beats & has taken much from their work, but he's never fawning or blindly uncritical. Whether delving into a single poem, such as his chapter on Ginsberg's "Sunflower Sutra," or examining an entire body of writing, such as William Burroughs' unflinching, soul-searing work, he raises compelling questions for the reader to ponder. This isn't a final word, but a starting point, inviting each of us to go further into the subject. Anyone who's been moved by the work & lives of the Beats will be pleased with this fine introductory book. Highly recommended!
Book Description
This unique book contains 50 inspiring stories, all of them written by the cancer survivors themselves. The stories cover all ages, many types of cancer (see the table of contents for all types covered) and numerous treatments, mostly focusing on alternative methods. All of them are different but generally include:
1. How they were diagnosed.
2. What they went through after the diagnosis and how they coped with it.
3. How they healed themslves and what they felt was the most effective part.
4. Advice they would give others going through the same thing.
As a bonus, contact information is also included so any of the survivors may be personally contacted for questions or support. This book is a great read for anyone, whether they've been diagnosed with cancer or not.
Customer Reviews:
Some good stories.......2006-04-25
Some of the survivor's stories are very entertaining, if not well-written. The fact that many of them were willing to go "outside the box" and do their own thing was commendable.
I was hoping for more information and more of a variety on alternative treatments than what the book delivered.
Personal success stories to give you courage.......2004-08-23
A cancer diagnosis usually frightens the patient. This book is very valuable to build courage. Many of these 50 people describe their own fear at various stages of recovery. But what they have in common is that they "took charge of their own health care." In most cases, they got a negative prognosis from a conventional cancer doctor (oncologist). But they sought out second and third opinions until they found a doctor, clinic and/or a combination of substances that worked.
These obviously unedited descriptions are gripping and convincing because they are in the patient's own words. Many of them (about 20) used some form of the Gerson Therapy. There are much easier and less expensive treatments available now. One doesn't have to go to Mexico anymore to get competent treatment from physicians using Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). So, a cancer patient should not look to this book to find the optimum treatment or clinic. That is not its purpose. Read it for the inspiration that every cancer patient needs.
Testimonies build faith.......2004-05-25
This book will build your faith. God is no respecter of people. If thse guys got healed, so can you!!!! Also check out Henry Wright's "A More Excellent Way" to see how to fight spiritually. "Deadly Emotions" by Don Colbert is good as well.
Wonderful!.......2004-05-20
This book was recommended to me by a friend to help a loved one of mine who was recently diagnosed with cancer. The stories in this book are a true inspiration and are helping us get through these rough times. Zack Vaughan and the folks at awareness publishing are wonderful people for putting together such a treasure. God bless you, Zack Vaughan!
An Invaluable Book.......2004-01-15
This book has just been published. As soon as I came across it, I ordered it. Within two days I'd read it all. Some stories are only two pages long, some much longer. I suppose the good news and bad news is that they are written by the patients themselves...most of whom are not good writers. What does come through is candor, courage, and the sheer delight of having beat cancer. Nearly all the stories involve "hopeless" late stage cancers, including breast cancer, lung cancer, brain cancer, melanoma, ovarian cancer, pancreatic cancer, multiple myeloma, colon cancer, prostate cancer and lymphoma. Real people who beat real cancers. Each story is different. A number of different diets, supplements, mind-body approaches and clinics were utilized. However, you'll soon pick up on commonality of certain aspects: a tenacious desire to live, dietary changes, a "taking control" of the healing process, and spiritual renewal. For those struggling against the odds, this book offers tremendous inspiration and hope. An added plus is that these patients are available to speak with others.

Don't waste your time, energy or money ..........2007-08-14
I have to admit, I was a fan of Mary Summer Rain's earlier books, and I have this book in my collection (purchased many years ago). As I read each "ceremony," I wasn't into all these "star vehicles," "crystal use," etc. It is easy for MSR to say these chants were from one branch of the Anasazi -- that way she cannot receive as much criticism from the Pueblo Indians.
As far as who knows what kind of ceremonies were done back then, there is such as thing as oral history. We did not write down our history, but told them verbally, which is why stories, legends and HISTORY, continue to live until this day. The Yonega has rewritten much of Native American history, but it is now our turn to tell the truth.
I agree with previous reviews -- MSR is a new-ager who has snowballed many people throughout the years. This is why she has shifted to writing fiction (wait -- she's been doing that for years)!
I never had regarded her as Native American, she doesn't really know -- she claims to a nation (Shoshone) but I wonder if they readily accept her.
Stay away from her writings, unless you don't mind reading fiction. AS for me, if I like the book, I go back and read it from time to time. I still have the book, but I haven't read it in over 10 years.
Can I vote 0 stars?.......2005-08-31
I have to echo Joseph's review and warn people to stay away from this book as well as any other books by Mary Summer Rain. The author has taken claims to a heritage that she knows nothing about. This book sells romanticized "spirituality" and is a fictional collection of Anasazi beliefs and chants, and should not be considered a true account.
On this book not being about "anything ancient"........2004-03-05
I am writing for two reasons: One, simply to say that this is a beautiful book about what I feel deep in my heart is quite historically accurate.
Two, in reference to one long review that attacks this book as being pretty much a lie. The reviewer should have paid more attention to the book's repeated mention of these chants and customs being associated with a particular Anasazi CLAN, not the entirety of the Anasazi people over centuries. Does the reviewer believe that he/she, or any pueblo for that matter, knows what went on with every CLAN of people back then?
It doesn't really matter. You are either positively affected by this book or you are not. If you have the slightest ability to read with an open heart and mind -- which should, by the way, help you see more clearly -- you will probably get what Mary Summer Rain is trying to say with the book: plain and simple truth. She does this abundantly in all of her other books, and I count her work, including Ancient Echoes, as among the most enlightening literature I have ever found.
Very resourceful book...............2000-04-05
This book, the many chants ect. are beutiful! If nothing else, they are very calming, soothing and interesting.I felt as if I was taken back in time,to a place very far away.To a wonderful place with extradinary people.Mary summer rain has the remarkable ability to captivate her readers with profound wisdom bought forth in a simple, easy to understand manner.Like so many of her other books ,this is a book you will read over and over.I highly recommend it.
Ancient Echoes is not about anything ancient.......2000-03-08
Claiming to contain the wisdom of the Anasazi, Ancient Echoes, is a disappointment. There is nothing ancient in the ideas expressed. Indeed, most of the ideas expressed are New Age ideas with no connection to the Anasazis, who were the ancestors of today's Pueblos. I found this book insulting to anyone who cares about the heritage of the Pueblos or bout prejudices European-Americans maintain against Native Americans. The Pueblos hold that they are the descendents of the Anasazi and that the "Ancient Ones" never vanished. Scholars have long recognized the same. The National Park Service that maintains Anasazi archaeological sites at places like Mesa Verde, has also long recognized the link between Anasazis and contemporary Pueblos. Yet, this book ignores this knowledge in favor of the author's whim. Mary Summer Rain claims to have received the chants and prayers of the Anasazi through "spirit memory recall." However, the information this technique brought her does not square with the information Pueblos themselves give or with the information archaeologists can verify. Her chants bear no relation to Pueblo religious practice and her description of Anasazi society contradicts what is known for certain about the Anasazi. The "Anasazi" ceremonies suggested, like the Phoenix Dance, have never been known among the Pueblos. Indeed the very suggestion that this dance was held "twice a year" (p. 125) goes against Puebloan practice (see Alfonso Ortiz, The Tewa World, 1969). Similarly, there is absolutely no evidence that the Anasazi were enamoured with crystals, (pp. 98, 134, 144) that women were "welcomed into the Hunter Society" (p. 22) or that they traveled about in Star Vehicles (pp.118, 188). This book should be classified as fiction, or as a treatise on New Age thought. In no way should this book be taking as a serious portrayal of Anasazi life. Indeed, it perpetuates many stereotypes Europeans have long held regarding Native Americans disregarding the appeals of Native American scholars that non-Indians stop using Indians to legitimize their own beliefs.

Bill Manville knows about battling booze--getting drunk, staying drunk, getting sober, relapsing, and, finally, staying sober for more than 20 years. Host of a talk show, Addictions & Answers, Manville writes in Q&A format, addressing his questioners' concerns about alcohol and drug abuse and recovery. Many are in denial about their alcoholism--despite waking up with strangers and losing jobs and relationships or think that life won't be any fun without a drink in both hands. Manville pulls no punches setting them straight. Despite his been-there-done-that, witty, sometimes confrontational style, he remains caring and positive. His advice is based on his own experience as a lush ("you hate the glass in your hand, pray to God not to drink it, and lift it to your lips and gulp it down anyway") and a devotee of Alcoholics Anonymous and residential treatment programs. He often brings in experts to supplement his advice. The section on formal interventions is worth the price of the book by itself. Highly recommended both for people who think that their alcohol or drug habit might be a problem and for their family and friends. --Joan Price
Book Description
In a refreshingly clear-headed and informed approach to addiction, Bill Manville, noted writer and radio host of the popular talk show "Addictions and Answers," has compiled a list of 88 questions and answers from, "a ton of plain and fancy drunks and dopers" and their family and friends. Cool, Hip, and Sober offers valuable advice and information from his guests: noted psychiatrists, psychologists, rehab counselors, MDs, academics and more. Here, in first-person detail, are responses to the issues faced by alcoholics, addicts, and their loved ones, such as:* How can I stop for good today?* How can I tell if someone I love will relapse?* Alcholism . . . addiction . . . and sex* Do interventions really work? And how do I set up one?* How do I find the best rehab for me?*The many faces of denial* Is alcoholism inherited?* And much, much more . . . A brave, transformational look at the treatment of chemical dependency, Cool, Hip amp; Sober is a captivating, insightful and essential handbook for overcoming denial and achieving a peaceful, long-term recovery.
Customer Reviews:
cool,hip and amazingly readable- riveting!.......2006-04-16
I have had this book for awhile having read it once and then put it on the shelf. I picked it up today and reread almost half of it when I had planned to do something else.As a sucker for anything that clearly tells the tale of our human nature- the stories here do just that. Garnered from the sober author's radio call in show, (he's sort of the sober dear Abby) the problem drinkers or persons who are not sure if what they are wrestling with is an alcoholic situation get straight answers. The authors experience was extreme- and he is an advocate for rehab and then a 12 step program. However, the stories and information here are useful to any tangental situation - they cut right to the chase. Another thing that is super refreshing is that the author really loves and embraces his sobriety and is "cool, hip and sober" For all those pub crawlers who have given up on their creativity and their dreams , it is nice to hear someone affirm that sober life is technicolor and the alternative dreary black and white. I love any text that tells the truth and this book is just filled with "stories".
Bert H. from (currently) Sacramento.......2004-02-06
I found this well-written book easy to read and to understand. The straight-to-the-point real-life examples seem to answer my questions completely.
The narative flows along smoothly while making the points. If a person didn't get it the first time, the subsequent narrative of other people's situations and outcomes gives them another chance to do so.
I know a few people who will benefit from reading this book and will be thanful to Mr. Manville for writing it.
Does not read like a self-help book.......2003-11-28
My family has a long history of addiction and I've been exposed to a lifetime of books, programs, literature and advice on the topic.
Cool, Hip and Sober is the ONLY "Self-Help" book I have ever read,(on any topic) that I didn't have to make myself read.
Before any form of knowledge or experience can be helpful, it must be transmitted. Bill Manville's, Cool, Hip and Sober flows into the reader's conscious without resistence and therein lies the beauty of this book.
You will want to read this book!
Masterful, readable and real addiction advice.......2003-11-25
As an addiction counselor, I've read many self-help books about addiction. Cool, hip & sober is my favorite so far because of the question and answer format, the down to earth approach of the author and the believable, heart felt stories and examples of the pain and suffering of the addict and everyone around them, as well as the tough, but doable triumphs of recovery.

As someone who is new to the candida world the information provided was extremely useful. The recipes on the other hand left much to be desired. I am an avid cook and had to ammend the recipes I tried in order to make them somewhat palattable. Some like the baking, were unfixable and had to be discarded. Some of the combinations suggested are absolutely unthinkable. If you are looking for good background information on candida this is a great book. If you are looking for great recipes, try something else.
The best candida diet I have ever tried..........2002-03-14
This book is amazing. I have suffered from candida overload for 20 years (I had tried diet and alternative medicine many times) and it had developed into chronic fatigue - I was struggling to get to work each day. After reading her book, I hired a nutritionist from Ms. White's business (we converse via e-mail - ... and took the supplements recommended and carefully followed her four point plan and diet. I am, at only one month, feeling great - out of bed and on the move! All my pains are gone, my sinuses and acne are clearing up, I have lost 20 pounds, even my fungal toenails are clearing up. I still have to stay on the diet a year at least, but it is very much worth it. None of the other methods have worked as well as this. This thorough and complete program really works and I can't recommend this book and her program enough.
Not much use, really.......2001-08-11
A lot of Christian tosh interspersed with some useful information about practical steps to take to get Candida under control. The recipes are useless for people following food-combining or gluten-free diets. Overall, I wish I never bought it.

Not useful to me.......2000-01-20
The book is definitely of little use to me.
I have a severe case of Candida, everytime I eat carbohydrates of any kind. i.e. Potatoes, whole wheat, oats, my Candida flares up.
The book is completely FULL OF WHEAT AND CARBOHYDRATE recipes. You will be surprissed!
Book Description
A smoke-filled room. The clink of chips breaking the silence of furious concentration. The occasional muttering of "check," "raise," and "fold," as staggering amounts are wagered on a simple hand of five cards. In this new paperback edition, acclaimed writer A. Alvarez narrates the history of poker -- its most amazing stories, unforgettable players, and incredible hands. From the first great Las Vegas poker marathon, in which Nick the Greek played Johnny Moss for five months straight, to the more recent World Series of Poker, Alvarez captures a subculture rich with legend. His lively text is combined with a colorful array of poker-inspired art, advertisements, movie stills, and photos to create an entertaining ode to the pastime that is not so much a game of cards as a way of life.

Nifty addition to any poker enthusiast's library.......2003-10-14
Cool book to peruse on a rainy afternoon for those who fancy themselves as poker enthusiasts. While the book provides no insight or tips on game strategy - keep in mind that that's not what this book is for. Rather, it delves into other topics such as the history of the game, the colorful personalities, game lore and historical/memorable bad beats and monster calls. The other great highlight of this book are the numerous illustrations pulled from a few centuries worth of poker art found in advertising, book covers, etc.
pleasant surprise.......2002-01-28
Bought it for a friend...cheated...and read it before giving it. What at first appears to be a coffee table picture book is actually a well written, informative and lively account of various poker facts and stories. If you love poker you'll definitely enjoy this book
