Let's get one thing straight right off the bat. Children love books with flaps. They can't get enough of them. And this book has many, many flaps--over 60, in fact. Something else: children are crazy about Thomas the tank engine. Translation? Very young readers will happily spend a lot of time lifting and learning with this big, bright, colorful board book. Early learning concepts are reinforced on each page, as readers are encouraged to explore their knowledge of colors, numbers, sizes, everyday objects, and the alphabet. Thomas the tank engine travels through the pages, starting out early in the morning in the train shed and moving through the stations, dropping off parcels and passengers, and finally ending up in the freight yard with car after car full of important objects to be delivered, such as milk, doors, a piano, a kangaroo, and xylophones. Children should be allowed to roam freely over the pages of this book, making up their own stories related to the pictures they discover under the flaps. (Ages 2 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

Illustrated in full color.  Jam-packed with loads of flaps to "lift, look, and learn" from, this book will have young children searching for engines painted blue, green, or red, counting from 1 to 10, and learning the alphabet.

5 out of 5 stars Great Share Time Book!.......2007-09-06

I am enjoying this book for the third "time". The kids enjoy lifting the flaps to see what is behind them and never seem to tire of it. We have explored the alphabet and learned new words. We have reinforced counting and touched on basic math. This book helps spark the imagination and the stories that little ones can come up with are marvelous. I have 3 very different grandsons, but this book has given me hours of enjoyment with each one of them in their turn. It is the book most requested during visits from Nana.

3 out of 5 stars Good for 2 year olds.......2007-07-23

We've gotten a good 4 months use out of this book, with several fringe benefits to lifting up the tabs and looking. We can practice recognition of the trains' (where is Percy, Thomas, etc.), look for colors, make sounds (the cuckoo clock, dog barking, trains of course). The numbered flaps are a little hard to see, but still fun to look. When I was able to keep them from tearing the flaps off entirely, we enjoyed the anticipation of looking underneath them. Worth the price because it's interactive and parents can make more of the pictures than just the flaps if so inclined.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-07-19

We have 2 of this book so we could leave one at granny's. My son loves Thomas and this book. The reason it only got 4 stars is the lift flaps are not all that durable and we are missing some out of both books.

4 out of 5 stars Big Quality Book that will become a favorite...........2007-07-04

The only reason I didn't give it five stars is there is no story- but that only seems to bother the parents. Both my boys love this book (age four and five) and it's a frequent pick at bedtime. The cardboard is heavy duty and the doors are firmly attached: they still close after two years and none have torn off! It's over sized, so all the details are easy to see... and there is ALOT to see! The scenes are spread out over two facing pages with each having a different focus: from the alphabetical freight cars A to Z to counting in the cargo cases and opposites in the depot. The lack of story might be on purpose as we spend a lot of time taking about what's going on in the different scenes. If your little ones are Thomas fans- it's a bonus, but not a requirement.
Hope your children enjoy this book as much as mine... well maybe a little less (I do get tired of the same book night after night after night... ;)

5 out of 5 stars Lots of fun.......2007-06-29

My two-year-old likes this book a lot. There are plenty of flaps to look under. The pages are about things like colors, numbers, and the ABCs. I was a little sad there wasn't a story, but my son doesn't care.

5 out of 5 stars Hooked Our Grandson on Books!.......2007-08-20

This is our 10 month old grandson's first Thomas book and his favorite. The book is just the right size for his fingers to open up the book and the flaps. No concern for storyline as he spends most of the time opening the flaps. Good introduction to books for sitting and crawling babies. One word can describe the hidden object. Will buy more of this type of book for him as well as the touch and feel books.

3 out of 5 stars It's okay.......2006-03-14

My son loved it, of course, as he loves anything Thomas but it's a little boring. We have a full-sized lift-the-flaps book about Thomas which has many trains and lines up perfectly with the pictures under the flaps. That's not the case with this book. The story is short and the pictures in this book just aren't very interesting.

1 out of 5 stars Bad Flaps.......2006-02-25

Great little book except the pictures under the flaps are totally off. This makes it frustrating for little ones to know what they are looking at. Usually Thomas the tank engine stuff is much better quality.

5 out of 5 stars entertaining book.......2005-08-19

My son is a year and a half, and loves Thomas and his friends. Ive bought him several books, but he always brings this one out again and again. He loves to lift the flaps and see the little pictures hiding beneath.

2 out of 5 stars Not very interesting.......2004-01-29

I bought this book for my 19 month old son because he is a great fan of Thomas, but it hasn't proved to be a hit with him or with me. There isn't much of a storyline, and it's barely worth lifting the (very small) flaps, as the pictures underneath are mostly uninteresting and tiny. The colours are also a bit strange (Bertie the bus is brown), and the text does not show the personality of Thomas or any of the other characters. In terms of lift-the-flap, books like "Where's Spot" or "Spot Goes to the Farm", with large flaps and clear, colourful pictures underneath are far superior.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-06-12

This book is really great. It has lots of flaps and fun pictures. My son loves it. Really great!

5 out of 5 stars Big hit!.......2005-10-15

This is a great visual discrimination book. In it, a new zoo is getting ready to open. James and Thomas take the animals to their new home, but many things go wrong: Edward has a bear eating all the fish, the monkeys in Thomas's coach are unlocking the gate to their cage, and Thomas runs out of water. Get this silly book today and write a review about it.

4 out of 5 stars My boys love the humor in the this book!.......2000-01-15

Almost any Thomas book will be a hit with Thomas fans, but my boys do seem to enjoy this one a great deal. They find the mild humor (monkeys wearing clothes, seals throwing objects, a bear eating lots of tuna) beyond hilarious. They like (and I like) the way the lift-a-flaps are set up, so they really change the picture around when opened. If you have a Thomas fan 5 or under, I would consider this book.

4 out of 5 stars What is *THAT* smell? (A review of Trouble for Thomas).......2005-07-15

Okay, Ringo Starr is not the best narrator, and the pictures are a bit fuzzy and not all that great having been taken from the TV series video tape and enlarged past what their quality would support; and Thomas (on the cover) does look like his going to `hurl', but little people just don't seem to care and so we give this book and cassette, Four Stars.

There are 4 stories in this collection:

Trouble for Thomas
Thomas Saves the Day
Thomas Goes Fishing
Terence the Tractor

For those of you who can't remember the plot lines I have summarized them below.

In `Trouble for Thomas', kind Edward trades jobs with Thomas so that our favorite Steamie is off to end his boredom by pushing freight cars instead of coaches. The cars get the better of him though because he hasn't listened to Edwards advice. (A frequent Thomas problem.)

In `Thomas Saves the Day' it is poor James' turn to get into trouble with those troublesome trucks. They force him to go off the line. (Wooden brakes, you know). Thomas saves the day by quickly getting the break-down train to the scene, where fortunately James is embarrassed, but unhurt. At the end of this story, James gets new brakes, and Thomas gets his own branch line and Annie and Clarabel.

In `Thomas Goes Fishing', we find out that Thomas loves to stop and watch the river, unfortunately fate and his driver seldom allow him to do so. When he meets the other engines he repeats his dissatisfaction and says, "I want to fish." But they would all say the same thing in reply: "Engines don't go fishing."

Trouble comes when Thomas stops at the river station for water and the pump is out of order. His driver and fireman use a bucket to top him off, but unbeknownst to them, they have put fish in Thomas' boiler. Steamie chaos (and a bit of a stink) ensues.

In `Terence the Tractor', Thomas gets himself into trouble when he bangs up his much hated snowplow so that he actually can't wear it. And when a heavy snow falls, he gets stuck. Terence comes to the rescue and Thomas finds out that `caterpillar treads' are good things indeed.

Four Stars. My son plays this tape over and over and over, all of its faults forgiven.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT story book for a Thomas fan.......2005-06-16

While the stories in this book may appear wordy or (dare I say it) even dreadful at first, as you read them more and more (and I garuntee you will) they will grow on you as they did on me and my toddler!

This collection of stories has a central group of characters, which even the youngest of children can seem to become invovled with. The stories include plot lines that invovle lessons like teamwork, commradery, honesty, modesty and being humble. The stories are fun and have action (which is more then I can say for some of the Thomas books).
It's really wonderful to see my two year old acting out "Thomas Goes Fishing" with his toy trains or the day I realized he had "Terence the Tractor" memorized. This book has really reached my child!

5 out of 5 stars Makes air travel great!.......2002-08-04

My 3-year-old son listened to this cassette repeatedly with a walkman when we took a 4 hour flight. A stress-free flight courtesy of Thomas.

5 out of 5 stars No trouble for kids.......2001-09-24

My son loves Thomas the Tank Engine and this book, with the cassette, helps him with his pronunciation of the words that he is having trouble saying. I wish that there were more then 4 books on tape with Thomas.

4 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Fans of the Television Show.......2006-09-01

My daughter is a huge Thomas fan, and she loves all of the Read To Me paperbacks. Because the books tell stories from the television series, we read these books at times when my daughter is asking to watch Thomas, but he isn't on. My daughter loves how the illustrations are actual still photographs from the television series. However, sometimes the photos shown don't really depict what is going on in the story. There are a lot of words in these books, with small print. These are definitely books little kids would not be able to read on their own, but they can enjoy the pictures on their own. It is wonderful how each book is comprised of 3 or 4 short stories that toddlers have no problem holding their attention through.

5 out of 5 stars Thomas Gets Tricked and Other Stories.......2005-08-08

It's good for children under 3 or 4 years.

2 out of 5 stars Beware.......2004-08-01

I don't like that amazon has pop up of Please Read To Me series in with Pictureback Readers and other formats. They are all very different. See Cranky Day review.

5 out of 5 stars Just like the videos!.......2000-09-07

My three-year old son is an avid Thomas fan and this book so closely mimics the videos that sometimes I can hardly tear him away from the book! It is a great "learn to read" book for preschoolers. Even my 16-month old daughter easily recognizes the characters in the books from those that are in the videos. My son also likes the fact that there are several short stories in this book (great for bedtime! ) For any die-hard Thomas fan this book is a keeper!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful product.......2006-12-27

This book is nice because it has several stories. If you think you're going to read ONE story at a time, be advised, you'll probably have to read clear to the end of the book every time. Reading Thomas books has become our pre-naptime routine--what a great way for Grammy and grandson to bond!

4 out of 5 stars nice story.......2006-02-21

A very nice story for 3-year-old fan of Thomas trains, videos,
puzzles, books and pjs.

2 out of 5 stars Incomplete, dis-jointed, unclear.......2004-11-23

This is a pretty bad book. It's the 2nd Thomas book, I've ever bought - and I hope most of them aren't as bad as this one. There are several stories in this book, all of which seem to have chunks of the stories missing. It is very dis-jointed. The illustrations (which are photos of the train models) do not help the reader to figure out what is going on in the story. The words(vocabulary) that are used seem to be somewhat unusual (perhaps - they are british terms) - which do not help. This book is not worth the money or the effort. Although my 3 year son doesn't seen to mind too much, it certainly is not his favorite book. Besides, it is frustrating to the adults that have to endure reading this to the children over and over.

3 out of 5 stars Kind of fragmented........2002-09-02

The stories are good stories,
the pictures are neat, and
the characters are interesting.

This book, though, tends to be written
in a sort of fragmentary style,
leaving out a bit much, and often
not giving a good idea of why one
picture follows another.

On the other hand, my 3-year-old likes
it, like all her other Thomas books.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent choice for "Thomas the Tank Engine" fans........1997-04-12

Do you know of a young child who enjoys the "Thomas the Tank Engine" segments on the PBS show "Shining Time Station"? Does this child enjoy having stories read to him or her? Then "A Cow on the Line" would be a great addition to the child's library. This book features 42 photographs from the Britt Allcroft video productions on its 32 pages. All photos are quite clear. The pictures are well placed to keep the attention of young listeners. Because the text could serve as a script for the television segments, this is a "read to me" book. A strong third- or fourth-grade reader could handle the text, but the sentence structure and phrasing is beyond beginning readers. As listed above, the book contains 4 stories. Only one features Thomas -- Percy and Edward take the spotlight in this book. The stories are true to the nature of the "Thomas" series and are a delight to read. And if your child is like the two year old in our house, he or she won't even mind if you don't sound like Ringo Starr or George Carlin (the video narrators) when you read the stories!

1 out of 5 stars A poor example for children.......2006-06-19

This book is a real shame. So many kids, including my own, love Thomas and his friends. But this book teaches nothing but how to lie, laugh at another's shortcomings, and foul language. One engine tells the train cars to "shut up!" because they are picking on another engine. That is supposed to teach a moral lesson to my children? I don't think so.

Another disappointing note: my son received the engine named "Diesel" as a gift. This book makes him out to be a bad engine. How is my son supposed to feel about his gift now?

I do not recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars My son loves this one!.......2000-11-11

My son loves this story. We have the story itself recorded on tape so that he can just play it... otherwise we'd lose our voices reading it over and over. With bright pictures and an articulate story (with a moral: the honest hard working engine wins out in the end over the wicked arrogant one), this book others in the series have our son completely charmed. My son makes me read this book every night before and it is TORTURE! Every character is mean and nasty, the language is very British and obtuse, and frequently the stories just don't make sense. I moan every time Jackson asks for this book, and I call it 'the PEW book of all time.'

Book Description

Based on popular tales by The Reverend W Awdry, these two fun board books feature three-dimensional faces on the covers. And, when you press Thomas’ or James’ nose, you hear the theme from the popular Thomas & Friends video series.

4 out of 5 stars Small price for a portable - play anywhere - theme song.......2003-12-25

The story is abbreviated, true. And the illustrations are somewhat flat. BUT you get the 3-D face on the cover, the theme song played at the perfect volume with cows and sheep on the first double page (can hear the song better with the book open). Our one year old rarely makes it past that first page but there's no need! A run through of the song, some moos and baas... cheers up a sad (car bound) baby everytime.

2 out of 5 stars Anti - Thomas.......2000-05-02

Is it OK to say that you don't like TTTE? There is no denying that kids have been captivated by the Thomas phenomenon, including the mass merchandising of toys and every conceivable household accroutrement - from lampshades to bedspreads, toothbrushes to curtains...overpriced clothing ranges...mainly on the strength of the TV series and the BBC/ABC marketing arms.

But, but, but, but....I find the stories twee, dated and humourless. So dour...so class-ridden... I know millions will disagree, and there are millions of happy kids and parents out there.

Thomas was a passing phenomenon in our household, and there's nothing wrong with a bit of stodge mixed in with more nutritious fare. I wouldn's say "don't go there", but try to retain some perspective and balance in children's lives!

3 out of 5 stars Another good story about Thomas, but not long enough........2000-04-11

I purchased this particular Thomas the Tank Engine book for my grandchildren, as they have enjoyed the stories about Thomas in the past. However, if I could have seen and read this book in a book store, I probably would not have purchased it. While the graphics are extremely good (as usual), and the music is quite cute (and appropriately quiet), the story is just too short at 10 pages. In addition, I am always looking for books that are interesting for my grandchildren, but yet teach them new words. Unfortunately, this book just is too short to meet that criteria for me to rate it any higher than 3 stars.

5 out of 5 stars "Thomas the tank engine" is tops.......2000-02-23

This book is a classic. It contains the exceptional stories Thomas and Gordon, Thomas' Train, Thomas and the trucks and Thomas and the breakdown train. In the first story, the little blue engine gets carried away with himself and gets a run for his money from Gordon. In the next, Henry is ill so Thomas takes his passenger train with embarrasing results. In the one after, Thomas has a go with some troublesome trucks. Finally, while he is shunting, Thomas notices James having some trouble with some trucks, he gets a hold of the breakdown train and saves James and gets a Branch line of his very own with two coaches.

1 out of 5 stars How I hate TTTE.......2000-05-01

I ate Thomas the Tank ngine, but any junior fans will like this pop-up book.

The morality is Victorian - the censorious and vindictive Fat Controller is an example of middle-class Victorian values. The engines (who do all the work) have to obediently kowtow to this toff. The worst of English class values. Outdated. I used to change the stories when I read these aloud. Thank goodness by the time most kids are independent readers they have grown out of Thomas!
