Disappointed with this Book.......2007-09-29
I found this book disappointing except for the cookbook section that was the best part of the book. Otherwise, the book has contradictions and old information. I found very little that was new.
The author says "nutrition is the vital key that determines the condition of the body's internal environment." Later he says the body is so complex it cannot be measured with one variable. This is one of the statements that seem contradictory.
In his theory he says traditional medicine sees "health as a war that pits your body against outsider invaders (eg:, germs, viruses, and other pathogens." ." This is similar to the germ theory or single cause theory that has long been out of vogue in health and medicine. He then says "we believe the body is in balance with itself and with the physical world in which it exists. Illness arises when the equilibrium is breached." This is similar to the Multicausation theory that conceptualizes health and illness as processes in which factors in man, the agent, and environment interact to cause health or illness and in which interventions can take place at various points in the process to strengthen man, reduce the strength of the agent of disease or disability, and to make the environment less favorable for a forceful impact between the host and agent. Man is healthy when these are in balance. This theory is not new but has been around during most of my 55 years of practice. .In addition, his application of the theory has a narrower focus in that it ignores the influence of the mental and spiritual aspects of health, of relationships, and of politics. These have all be shown to have an affect on health and illness in current research and are identified and well documented in Healthy Holistic Aging: A Blueprint for Success.
The diet discussed in the book is also not new and is, in fact, very similar to the diet prescribed for me 31 years ago when I was diagnosed with lung cancer. It is also similar to diets currently advocated by other authors such as in the cardiovascular diet that is also used for weight loss called the South Beach Diet that maintains and improves health. and the diets advocated by Edgar Cayce back in the 1930's for keeping the body alkaline to maintain health. In addition, the liver cleanser described has been around for many years and can be found in books on alternative health.

Swiss Secret to Optimal Health.......2007-08-23
I do not recommend this book because it has no scientific basis. It is just one man's opinion of what he thinks will work.
The Answer to today's medical crisis and to disease........2007-06-29
I am a practicing neurosurgeon in the USA, trained as a traditional allopathic doctor at an Ivy League school with the addition of a PhD to my MD degree, yet I didn't understand the true origin of our ill or aging body and it's 'diseased states', nor did I learn the answer as to finally preventing these states, until I studied with Dr. Rau. You won't need pills to treat illness or fatigue once you've learned how to cleanse your body of it's toxins and rebuild it the natural and healthy way. I urge you to read this user friendly version of Dr. Rau's God given insight and hard learned approach to becoming healthy (via true healing) and ultimately preventing illness.
TAKE WITH A GRAIN OF SALT.......2007-06-01
Although I believe Dr. Rau's philosophy about the direct connection between nutrition and health, I find this diet to be very difficult to stick with and very extreme for an average, healthy person.
It is similar in philosophy to a Macrobiotic diet but the influence is European cuisine as opposed to Asian cuisine. It prohibits the intake of sugar, caffeine, processed foods, alcohol and animal protien, while greatly increasing your vegetable and grain intake. I've done the Macrobiotic diet and I experienced increased energy, vitality, better sleep, better mood, etc. Dr. Rau claims that this is what you'll experience with his diet . However, when I did the detox, I experienced headaches, nausea, and a general feeling of illness the duration of the diet and I feel it was due to the total lack of caloric intake. I do think cleansing the body is a good thing and fasting for one or two days can be beneficial. However, I do not feel his detox diet is a healthy approach for healthy people. His claims are that you will feel better and better as the days go on but that was not my experience. In my opinion, no diet that limits your caloric intake to a few hundred calories a day is good for the body. Nothing extreme is good for the body and his detox is way too extreme.
If you do decide to get this book, some things you should know:
The recipes for the three week plan and the one week intensive detox require a lot of cooking and preparation. Because it is based on the regimen done at his clinic/spa in Switzerland where meals are prepared for you, it's difficult for a regular person's lifestyle and schedule. You would basically have to take a week off from work to start the diet and that is unrealistic for most people. I also found more than a few inconsistensies: Dr. Rau opposes any dairy from cows, but some recipes call for cream and butter! Some of the ingredients are very difficult to come by. One day's meal required chestnuts and since I started the diet in Spring, they weren't available and he offers no substitution. Dr. Rau isn't thorough in his explanation of preparing some of the recipes because one recipe on the restrictive detox, he requires you to prepare a corn chowder, but doesn't explain how you are supposed to prepare the leeks in the recipe since you aren't supposed to saute anything. Dr. Rau suggests that hunger would not be a problem because of the food intake. Well that isn't true. I was very hungry all the time because of the limited caloric intake. Dr. Rau is adamant about following the diet to a tee so these inconsistensies were frustrating and it left me pretty doubtful about his claims and philosophies. I felt like he and his publisher were in a rush to publish the book and get it out and I also got the impression that it was more to promote his clinic/spa in Switzerland.
Would I suggest this book? Unfortunately, no.

Dr Rau's Diet.......2007-04-16
I love to eat and love to cook, enjoying a meal is important at least three times every day. At almost 70 health is a concern, even though I'm in excellent condition and able to maintain my weight and frequent exercise.
Dr. Rau is focused on good food and nutrition. His recipes are easy to follow, inventive, and very appetizing. Some are old favorites and others are new combinations of textures and flavors. A lot of what he says has to do with the quality of life, eating organic fresh vegetables and fruits is a no-brainer. Perhaps we need to be reminded about the many toxic ingredients we regularly put into our bodies and see the many alternatives available to us.
His Swiss Detox diet appears to be a way to establish a personal and individual basis related to one's own body. He addresses allergies, our immune systems, how different foods affect our body and how we can recognize their effects. The factual basis of his work is both scientific and intriguing.
What interests me most are the food choices in his diets, tremendous variety and a rich palette, an opportunity to both eat well and enjoy new recipes. He also recognizes we have a sweet tooth and delicious deserts are included.
Book Description
The future belongs to a different kind of person with a different kind of mind: artists, inventors, storytellers-creative and holistic "right-brain" thinkers whose abilities mark the fault line between who gets ahead and who doesn't. Drawing on research from around the world, Pink outlines the six fundamentally human abilities that are absolute essentials for professional success and personal fulfillment-and reveals how to master them. A Whole New Mind takes readers to a daring new place, and a provocative and necessary new way of thinking about a future that's already here.

Art Teachers Summer Read.......2007-09-10
Great book to read while I consider my level of burnout. It was interesting and made me want to find out more. I would like to implement some of his straegies with my high school art kids. Thanks.
Faster than you think.......2007-08-28
We are undergoing enormous change and at a pace that seems to be getting faster all the time. This book is an invaluable tool for all of us if we know how to use it properly. He is pointing us in the right direction - now it is up to us to go and do something with the advice he has provided. I loved this book and would strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to have a whole new life.
Excellent tool for personal excellence........2007-08-15
What I love is when a book isn't just conceptual; it's practical. A Whole New Mind fits that bill nicely.
Dan Pink does a great job of not only laying out the essential principles to a well-rounded, complete way to bring your best to work, but he also gives excellent examples and resources to learn from and develop your capabilities.
Well researched, a great read, entertaining, and immensely useful. I highly recommend it.
Thought Provoking.......2007-08-14
What a fascinating take on the age of "Abundance, Asia and Automation." Pink's reflection on what these three realities mean to today's young people and what their future may be has really changed my outlook on my children's future. Among the most important and affirming things that Pink says is that we need "an artist in every room." Amen to that!
A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future.......2007-08-12
Thought provoking. Right on in describing the transformation that our global economy is moving towards.
Book Description
A piercing and vital look at how capitalism is consuming U.S. society.
An apt sequel to Benjamin R. Barber's best-selling Jihad vs. McWorld, Consumed offers a wrenching portrait of how adult consumers are infantilized in a global economy that overproduces goods and targets children as consumers in a market where there are never enough shoppers. Driven by a frantic imperative to sell, consumer capitalism specializes today in the manufacture not of goods but of needs.
This provocative culmination of Barber's lifelong study of democracy and capitalism shows how the infantilist ethos deprives society of responsible citizens and displaces public goods with private commodities. Traditional liberal democratic society is colonized by an all-pervasive market imperative. Public space is privatized. Identity is branded. Our world, homogenized. With brilliance and depth, Barber confronts the likely consequences for our children, our liberty, and our citizenship, and shows finally how citizens can resist and transcend the civic schizophrenia with which consumerism has infected them.
Customer Reviews:
Hard read but.......2007-09-24
Benjamin R. Barber's "Consumed" is a hard book to read but a necessary one. Barber tells us how capitalism once met the "needs" of people and that it now just meets what he calls "faux" demand. It's the rise of the protestant ethics and ethos that has made capitalism thrive until today. The rise of infantilization and the dumbing of consumers has given corporations the power to control our so called "wants." Barber doesn't give us a solid solution to this (even he admits it will take a big effort) growing problem but it is a start.
How a book infantilizes adults and swallows citizens whole.......2007-09-03
It seems like there is an endless market for "Marx-lite" books by people who hate America and the West. Here is another example without a new idea in sight. Famous authors, such as Marx, Sombart, and Gaibraith, have previously rebottled this old wine. Like them, Barber hates our movies, our culture, our food, our sports, our consumer products, our free markets, and, of course, the likes of Wall Street, Silicon Valley, Gates, Gilder, Wal-Mart, GM, Google, and on and on. It is depressing just going through all the parts of America he feels are misdirected and even immoral. Is this really a person who loves America?
Where are the positive examples and why this perspective? Because, as the Nobel Prize winning economist Hayek has pointed out, for socialists, "Every activity must derive its justification from conscious social purpose." Thus Barber must tear down all those activities that he feels have either no purpose or the wrong social purpose. This quote by Hayek is a succinct summary of the motivation behind the book. Toward this end, Barber quotes many attention-grabbing sources. For example, on page 51 he asks us to consider, "Karl Marx who presciently explained how `the expansion of production and of needs becomes an ingenious and always calculating subservience to inhuman, depraved, unnatural, and imaginary appetites.'" A question: Does that really describe you or your friends?
Like most socialists, he has no respect for the individual: We are all at the mercy of those terrible companies who want to sucker us into buying things we don't want or need. Hey, but Barber will be happy to decide what we need. He knows the truth -- ask him. But why is he or some other group better qualified to decide what we need?
Barber has no understanding of free markets, the emerging global economy, or even the mom and pop shop on the corner. Like many academics, who have never produced anything but papers and books, he writes with absolute confidence and with noteworthy ignorance, not because he is unintelligent but rather because his starting perspective is wrong.
This is a long tedious book: Barber seems to crank this stuff out by the ton. As he would say, this book is an immoral waste of resources that we as consumers should reject because it has no larger social value. The only thing it has going for it is a mighty ad campaign aimed at corrupting children, infantilizing adults, and swallowing citizens whole. But, then again, each of us will have to decide that.
Right on the mark..........2007-08-16
I see a number of other reviewers belittling the book because of some trivial factual error regarding sports figures or celebrities, but in my eyes those points merely underscores the point that Barber is trying to make. In the end the constant media focus on these types of people is in my eyes a mass distraction. Does it change my life one iota when a drunken celebrity does something stupid? Not at all, but the media covers it for hour on end, and people lap it up.
People defend popular culture such as Harry Potter or Shrek, but these are all pure escapism and have very little relevance to our daily lives. Reviewers of those films make tortured comparisons to try and prove relevance to daily life, but the sad fact is that many people have become conditioned to not expect more, and perhaps not even have the patience to view a more substantive work.
Other reviewers insist that they aren't manipulated and that they have free choice. To an extent that is true, but one can easily argue that many people are making poor choices because they have been so deeply conditioned by advertisers. How can you justify spending 50K$ on a car, and replacing it when it is 3 years old when an inexpensive well-made car will fulfill the basic needs of transportation and may last 5-8 years instead? How can you justify spending money on bottled water when tap water in most areas is just fine? And how can you justify accumulating tens of thousands in consumer debt just to acquire all of this stuff? There are countless such examples all over the place.
And finally, there is the paradigm that runs deeply through our society that having more money and having more material goods will somehow make you happier. The problem is that these desires can never be satisfied - there is always something more, and there is always someone else who has more. In the end all of this materialism leaves people feeling empty, and the only tonic that they know to try and fill the void is to go out and shop some more.
On the other hand, if you can reach a point where you are content with what you have, you may find that many of the things that you do have are completely superfluous and can be donated to Goodwill or sold. Get rid of enough stuff, and that McMansion will seem empty, and a more modest and affordable house may meet your needs quite nicely.
Best Book I've Read in 5 Years.......2007-07-11
This is the best book I've read in 5 years. And I usually read 30 or so a year. It is the most challenging thing I've ever read. Throughout almost every sitting with the book, I would have to walk away and just sit to let it soak in. It was extremely cutting and exposing to me. And I dare say convicting. It's helped me to realize what a hyper-consumer I am and how childish I am in my tastes and entertainment. Even how childish I am in my spending. I never thought there would be a day when I felt like I needed to grow up and be a man, but this book helped me to entertain the possibility. The basic idea of the book focuses on the infantilization (dumbing down) of our society via the means of marketing and advertising. And the hyper-consumerism capitalism that we live with today. I couldn't recommend this book more highly. But I will give one disclaimer. It's 300+ pages of really small type. What makes it worse is that the author writes it like an academic paper. For example the first chapter which is only 35 pages long has 98 footnotes. It's just a really difficult read where reading 20 pages takes you an hour. So you'll either love the book or hate it. If you're a nerd, you might dig it. If you're not a nerd, you won't.
Try something else........2007-06-19
I confess, I didn't read the whole book. A friend gave it to me, and I parked it on the shelf after reading half and skimming the rest. Jeez-Louise! I'd hate to spend a week on an expedition cruise with this guy! He'd be the first one trying to feed the animals and then monopolizing the talk at dinner till everyone wanted to jump overboard. I didn't realize corporate America had captured everyone's free-will. The evil Bill Gates and Steve Jobs must be supressed along with Rupert Murdoch and the Walton family! I suggest reading Alexis-Charles-Henri Clérel de Tocqueville. He still rings true today. You'll sleep better at night. You want an entertaining picture of rampant consumption in America today, seen through the lens of 1840's when the all-corrupting market swallowed the entire continent of North America...and yes, is still swallowing it...There's a lot to eat out there, bunky! Read Heyday by Kurt Andersen. We may not be perfect but there must be some attraction if 12 million people will risk life and limb to get here one way or another. Mr. Barber and his book would probably be better fare in Venezuala or Cuba.

Used as a reference by students of acupuncture, this is a hefty, truly comprehensive guide to the theory and healing power of Chinese medicine. It's also a primer on nutrition--including facts about green foods, such as spirulina and blue-green algae, and the "regeneration diets" used by cancer patients and arthritics--along with an inspiring cookbook with more than 300 mostly vegetarian, nutrient-packed recipes.
The information on Chinese medicine is useful for helping to diagnose health imbalances, especially nascent illnesses. It's smartly paired with the whole-foods program because the Chinese have attributed various health-balancing properties to foods, so you can tailor your diet to help alleviate symptoms of illness. For example, Chinese medicine dictates that someone with low energy and a pale complexion (a yin deficiency) would benefit from avoiding bitter foods and increasing "sweet" foods such as soy, black sesame seeds, parsnips, rice, and oats. (Note that the Chinese definition of sweet foods is much different from the American one!)
Pitchford says in his dedication that he hopes the reader finds "healing, awareness, and peace" from following his program. The diet is certainly acetic by American standards (no alcohol, caffeine, white flour, fried foods, or sugar, and a minimum of eggs and dairy) but the reasons he gives for avoiding these "negative energy" foods are compelling. From the adrenal damage imparted by coffee to immune dysfunction brought on by excess refined sugar, Pitchford spurs you to rethink every dietary choice and its ultimate influence on your health. Without being alarmist, he adds dietary tips for protecting yourself against the dangers of modern life, including neutralizing damage from water fluoridation (thyroid and immune-system problems may result; fluoride is a carcinogen). There's further reading on food combining, female health, heart disease, pregnancy, fasting, and weight loss. Overall, this is a wonderful book for anyone who's serious about strengthening his or her body from the inside out. --Erica Jorgensen

Whole Food Healing.......2007-09-01
This work integrates ancient notions of yin (coolness and saltiness) with
yang (sweetness, ascending and energy). Chronic diseases; such as, arthritis
benefit from avoidance of calcium inhibitors, coffee, too much meat/protein, alcohol, refined sugar, increased salt, avoidance of nightshade veggies i.e. tomato, potato and eggplant.
Arthritics also need to reduce wind dampness with black cohosh, devil's claw and ginger herbs. Sea veggies; such as, hijki and wakame have the highest level of calcium or 1300-1400 mg. per serving. Kelp has approximately 100 mg of calcium and dried wheatgrass has 500 mg. In addition, calcium should be taken with Vit D and an appropriate level of sunshine. Silicon in plant fiber assists in calcium metabolism.
This book would be extremely helpful in managing the nutrient load
processed by the body as a result of whole food ingestion and vitamins.
Hmmmm.........2007-08-18
Some wonderful pearls of wisdom. Unlike the true Chinese principles, Pitchford is very biased and towards vegetarianism pointing out the political reasons why to be a vegetarian and why "flesh" eating is so horrendous for the earth, your soul, etc. I much prefer the balanced, non-judgemental approach of Linda Prout Live in the Balance: The Ground-Breaking East-West Nutrition Program and/or Daverick Leggett Recipes for Self Healing andHelping Ourselves - truly non-biased, balanced simple in his approach, informative. The Leggett books can be ordered from http://www.meridianpress.net/ and are much less expensive than Amazon.
A way of Life.......2007-06-27
When you make the decision to get your health back, this book is a great start, I am amazed at how often the principles my mother employed 50 years ago pop up in this book. Beside my Mums guiding hand Mr Pitchford lays it out as it is, My thanks to him.
Indeed a Classic.......2007-05-12
I got this book 3 or maybe 4 years ago and I still use it for reference AND still reading it from time to time- each time learning something new. This book is like a giant sign-post pointing you to investigate deeper whatever dietary advice you might be interested in...
It is not perfect, but as compassionate and non-dogmatic (as much as a vegan-orientated book can be), I'd say it is very close.
Molly Stubbs.......2007-04-25
I bought this book six years ago in the Unity Church bookstore and have referred to it regularly ever since. I was having gastro-intestinal problems at the time, and several (mainstream) doctors had said they couldn't help me. I believe this book has helped my manage some of my health issues, but not all. The book is very thorough, and gives the reader a good sense of the healing properties of almost all commonly-used foods.
Having said that, I think there are some serious downsides to this book and Mr. Pitchford's approach. First, I think he is very extreme and biased, and too quick to refer to every frightening or negative study that shows why you should not eat a certain food or product. For example, he advocates avoiding any food or cookware with aluminum, citing a study done several decades ago liking aluminum with alzheimer's disease. After going into a panic, I threw away all my aluminum cookware. As it turns out, the results of that study were never repeated, and even the Sierra Club is no longer supporting that theory. He cites countless other frightening studies as well, many of which have not been vetted by the scientific community or the community of nutritionists and dietitians.
Another major problem with the book is that no normal person could possibly follow his recommended diet plans. I am a pretty disciplined person when it comes to food and cooking, but I could not in a million years follow all of his recommendations. For one thing, I would never be able to eat out or travel again. By the way, I lived in Japan for four years, and they sure as heck don't eat like this.
Finally, The recipes in the book are bland and boring. Hats off to anyone who can actually eat that stuff.

so good & good for you too.......2007-09-29
What a nice way to change the way you bake. Healthier choices with the same great flavor.
Great ideas for incorporating more whole grains into your diet.......2007-09-24
Looking for a book that could have been self-published by a vegan commune in 1972? Then skip right past this book.
This book is for people with a desire to eat "normal" tasting baked goods are concerned, not so much for those who are die-hard carob fans, not for those who eschew dairy, butter, eggs, sugar, sweeteners, or flavor, and definitely not for anyone looking for a macrobiotic cheesecake substitute. This book contains recipes for pancakes, croissants, coffee cakes, pie crusts, and so on, with an eye to making whole grain products tasty and palatable to the ordinary American palate. Many of the recipes capitalize on the yummy pairings of whole grains with things like spicy treats (e.g. carrot cake) and chocolate, which make the final product taste better than an all-white flour version. And yes, white flour is included in some recipes.
I have had good luck with the recipes, and I am glad that the authors include information and recipes on a variety of grains besides wheat. There is information on home milling but this is not required to use the book.
Excellent recipes--and easy for kosher bakers to adapt.......2007-09-17
I checked this out from the library, but am planning on buying a copy for myself as well as a couple to give as gifts. Great recipes, very reliable. I like the 100% Whole Wheat Sandwich bread, and all my kids love it as well--even my super-picky 1-year-old has been gobbling it down.
For people who don't want to buy instant yeast, it's easy to substitute regular active dry yeast--I buy it in a large container at Costco and keep it in my freezer. It lasts a year or more with no loss of effectiveness. You can't add ADY directly to the dough--first mix it with a little warm water (part of the water called for in the ingredient list). Wait about five minutes, until it's dissolved and puffy; at that point you can follow the regular directions. Not a hassle at all--I use those five minutes to gather my other ingredients.
Kosher bakers will have to adapt most of the recipes in this book, since we don't usually bake bread that contains dairy ingredients. I haven't had problems doing this. In the yeast bread recipes, I substitute canola oil for the butter, and use vanilla soymilk instead of the water & powdered milk combo. Those of you concerned about healthier recipes could give this a try and see how it works for you. I've found the recipes to be flexible. (Obviously I wouldn't do that with a cake or danish where the butter is an integral part of the taste, but for yeast breads it works well.) Soymilks vary a lot in consistency and taste, so FYI I use Whole Foods's vanilla soymilk. At $1.49, it's cheap and good. Also, for anyone confused a little by King Arthur's calling for potato flakes, not potato buds, in their recipes calling for potato--I couldn't figure out exactly what they meant, but ended up using Barbara's brand instant mashed potatoes (which don't have chemicals like the mainstream brands), and they worked great.
Wonderful- gets beneath the crust!.......2007-09-05
The book is excellent. You have a much better chance of being successful with baking anything if you understand the interplay of the ingredients, and the authors do an outstanding job of teaching just that. There is an adequate to good range of recipes, and detailed explanations of when a non-whole grain ingredient is required.
Negative reviews regarding fat and white flour quite simply didn't read the book thoroughly, or are suffering undering the misunderstanding that our country still has regarding fat- it isn't evil, and the book doesn't bill itself as low-calorie, so it is wrong to condemn it for not being so. The recipes here are so much better than what is out there, while still maintaining GOOD TASTE (the whole point, right!?) that you can't do wrong with it.
Whole Grain and High Fat, Cholesterol, and Sugar.......2007-08-21
All I have to say is don't buy this if you are looking to improve your health. Most of the recipes have sugar, eggs, heavy cream, cheese or some other high fat dairy product in them, not to mention liberal amounts of white flour. I would think that most people looking for a whole grain cookbook would want one that was more nutritionally sound.
Book Description
Despite their promise of a complete and balanced meal, most commercial pet foods are chock-full of dangerous by-products, indigestible fillers, and chemical preservatives. It's no wonder that owners spends thousands of dollars every year treating their pets' digestive disorders, tumors, joint and back problems, skin irritations, allergies, and heart, liver, and kidney disease. In THE WHOLE PET DIET, Andi Brown combines simple home cooking with natural supplements, dedicated playtime, exercise, and good old-fashioned pampering to help regulate pets' weight and tap into their natural healing powers.

Excellent & Helpful.......2007-08-23
Found this book very helpful in switching my dogs to healthy foods. Recipes are easy and most products are easy to find. For those who want to switch their pets to a better diet but are lost on what they should be eating, I recommend the book for it's easy to follow, step by step program. My dogs are really happy with the book as well!
what an awaking.......2007-08-20
The nicest part of this book is that it really helps. It does not spend time trashing others, it just helps heal. My 10 year old bichone has been on the chicken stew diet for about two weeks. She woke up! She runs and chases the others. She looks thinner, and her eyes look clear and alert. I have learned a lot by reading and following this book. I am thankful.
For anyone who wants a healthier pet, read this book!.......2007-07-14
I have 3 dogs; Buddy,Chelsea & Sweetie..they are our kids. I bought this book after 3 years of trying to help Sweetie (My Lhasa Apso 11.5 yrs old)loose weight. The vets gave me another "dry" dog food to try, which made her fatter, and more arthritic. She would cry at the bottom of the stairs to be picked up. After 1 week of giving her the "Spots Stew" in this book, Sweetie is running up & down the stairs on her own, she is loosing weight & happier & more playful, I also bought her the "Hip Hip Horay" for her joints in this book. I recommend this book to all animal lovers. Epecially during these times of "recalled" products. Deb Sweetman
Nice Alternative to Dr. Pitcairn's Natural Health Book (3rd ed).......2007-07-07
If you haven't gotten your hands on Dr. Pitcairn's New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats, this is a nice alternative to that book. Andi does a great job of going over what is in commerical kibbles and what the components mean.
Andi includes several meal recipes as well as treat recipes to keep your cat(s) and/or dog(s) happy. Andi also goes into details about the various supplements that she suggests that you use along with the meals. Included is information on various grains that are beneficial to use in the diets.
Andi encourages you to use a journal to first evaluate your animal's current state of health and then track the weekly progress you make. Many people find this part the hardest to do. My suggestion - start a diet blog for your pet.
The only big difference between the books is the size. Dr. Pitcairn's includes a section on how to deal with emergencies or diagnosing illnesses. If you're looking for strictly a diet book, this is the book you want to get.
An amazing life changing read!.......2007-06-19
I have written reviews for trip advisor, but never before felt compelled to write a review for book. I was somewhat skeptical at first, but Ms Brown has made a believer out of me. The book itself was a pleasant and charming read - I enjoyed the personal tone, subtle humor and was moved by the individual stories.
What wowed me more than anything else is how my nine year old golden retriever's health has improved since I read the book and started practicing what Andi Brown is preaching.
My dog has the greatest temperament in the world (he's a golden!), but suffers from debilitating allergies (he's a golden!) and the side effects are/were "itchy dog syndrome," dry and scabby coat, loss of hair, chronic ear and eye infection .... And if that is not enough, it appears that his immune system had been so compromised that he has had a tough time fighting off ticks. After two weeks of us following the eight week plan, the results were good.... we are now on week seven and I am stunned and amazed at how remarkably well my dog is doing - he looks and acts four years younger. My veterinarian will probably not recognize her patient... hopefully, she will prescribe this book to her other patients. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am so grateful that this book was written and that I was fortunate enough to read it. I look forward to writing back in another month to report on Charlie's progress. I am also anxious to read about the miracles that other pets and owners have experienced.

Super Natural Cooking: Absolutely Super Cookbook.......2007-09-25
I am picky about cookbooks, and I have a precious few that see regular use. Super Natural Cooking just shot to the top of the pile. Heidi Swanson's glorious photography and charming, eloquent text make this cookbook personable, approachable, and enticing. She makes you want to try the recipes--and soon!
I've been eager to revamp my kitchen and return to a wholefoods pantry after straying from the path many years ago. Super Natural Cooking provided the springboard for me today that Nikki & David Goldbeck's American Wholefoods Cuisine and The Vegetarian Epicure gave me so many years ago.
To the reviewers who asked for more alternatives for hard-to-find ingredients, I would remind them that Ms. Swanson developed many of the recipes with these specific ingredients in mind. Providing an alternative ingredient might require an entirely different recipe. I think she makes it very clear that yes, many of these ingredients will not be easily found in some parts of the world and she gives mail order suppliers as best she can.
Super Easy, Super Informative, Super Natural Cooking.......2007-09-18
I am not a skilled cook. I am not a vegetarian. I do not live in a big city where exotic spices or international produce are particularly common. I shop in regular grocery stores and sometimes eat fast food. But I love this book.
Heidi Swanson takes nothing for granted, teaching simple techniques (I never took home economics!), identifying the different spices, grains, produce and natural sweeteners, and offering substitutions for the harder to find ingredients. All the recipes are simple and delicious, with lots of helpful hints and information about the whole foods philosophy. She's done her homework, and she admits that cooking in a new way can be daunting. That makes people like me feel more comfortable using this cookbook.
I highly recommend this book. The hardest part about cooking this way is tracking down all the ingredients, but it's worth it.
Great un-pretentious vegetarian cookbook.......2007-08-20
I'm a foodie and a meat-eater. I love cooking and love using fresh ingredients. I've always been sort of wary of people who shouted about using only organic ingredients, especially those that are local: I found it pretentious and preachy. Most people who do use organic products don't really know the difference; they say things like: there's no chemicals and anti-biotics in organic products and it's true, it's not present there, but they aren't present in non-organic items either. Heidi tells us why though: she explains that in oils, pesticides can concentrate in the fat; she explains that additives sometimes ruin the flavor of an ingredient. Her recipes are delicious and she doesn't preach at all: she gently explains and encourages us to eat fresh ingredients because they taste the best not necessarily because it saves the environment or it goes against the big corporation (you know that annoying preachy stuff).
Super Natural Delight!.......2007-08-18
Heidi Swanson's latest cookbook is a delight to read, as well as to cook from. Filled with information about healthy, common, and unusual ingredients, I consider this book to be a learning/reference tool in addition to providing inventive recipes. One way I judge cookbooks (and I've got about 60 or so of them) is whether or not they inspire me. Super Natural Cooking truly does that. In addition to the text, the book is graced with stunning food photography, the sort of which is rightly labeled "food porn". The photos are Heidi's own (in addition to writing cookbooks, she is a photographer).
This is a vegetarian cookbook, something that isn't clear in the inside jacket. Although I don't believe that healthy, natural cooking precludes meat or fish (grassfed beef or bison, for example, is an excellent addition to a healthy diet), clearly more interest in fruits, vegetable, and whole grains would form the foundation of a nourishing diet. This cookbook's recipes go a long way in helping develop that foundation.
I am quite impressed with the recipes that call for alternative sweeteners. I am interested in greatly reducing my use of white sugar, so Heidi's cookbook contains recipes that use, for example, agave nectar and brown rice syrup. In fact, I'd purchased brown rice syrup months ago, but didn't know what to do with it! But now I know! And I've just made the Do-It-Yourself Power Bars, which use the brown rice syrup (excellent, by the way--I hope that I have some left to eat after tomorrow's long run!)
In conclusion, I would recommend this cookbook for anybody interested in incorporating more whole foods into one's diet. The recipes are novel, not particularly difficult, and most importantly, very tasty.

This one's different.......2007-09-05
This is not your regular diet book, full of lots of great information and very easy to understand
What a smart man!.......2007-09-04
I see the other reviews and I say the same thing. If you get the kit, and listen to the tapes. You will lose weight. I was 365 and lost 60lbs in less then 3 months. I have a lot more to lose. But if your so heavy you can't do work outs. Even when you try to walk - You leg starts to swell. And your doctor agrees- you need to lose some weight before you can do anything. Because you could have a heart attack. This is the diet. You eat real food. But you must eat. A heavy person is not heavy because of eating to much. Its the right foods and to eat. Don't skip meals. As for the blue print. When you see your doctor. He can tell you were your problem spots are growing. So you can get the right diet. Michael has done so much for my life. I don't have to cry every night because my legs or my sugar is threw the ceiling. I am feeling like a person now. If you need to lose weight now. Read it, do it. Do it for your self.
yes it does work.......2007-08-29
the book is a good place to start, but get the whole kit, no not every one lose 30lb in 6week (up to 30) but the more you have to lose that more you will lose. I reg person who got this kit and have been on this program for 12 weeks not and I have loss so far 56lb, but you have to be truly willing to change your bad habits. If you eat the way you should you not hungry cause you fill up on vegs, and with drinking all the water you stay full. The real secret to the plan is the mind set
Confused ?.......2007-08-24
I originally purchased this book as my daughter wanted to buy the 6 week makeover package for $300.00. I thought that if the 6 day makeover worked, then we would continue with the 6 week package. On purchasing the book, we had to decided our body types - totally confusing !!!! Neither my daughter nor myself could decide what body types we were - the one I chose was to eat meat 4 times a day - I am almost a vegetarian !!!
I am glad that I purchased the book, but found that the body typing was not consistent- too many choices, that lead to different diets.
It really works!.......2007-08-23
I read some bad reviews on here about it not being enuf food. Apparently, these people did not do it or else they'd be singing the praises like the rest of those who actually did it!
I am very overweight. When I started the 6 Day...I weighed in at 265lbs. 6 days later I weighed in at 256lbs.
My top weight was 283lbs almost 3 months ago. I worked out...walked the park and treadmill like a mad woman to lose only 4lbs in the first month. The second month I tried Alli...which allowed an additional 13lbs but pills are not something I can live with forever. Then I tried this. Amazingly, I was very satisfied for 97% of the 6 days. A few times I woke in the middle of the night with some growling...really, and I just had a little fruit or portion of meat and at the end...I still lost 9 whole pounds.
Of course, any diet can work but this one teaches you to eat to live not to live to eat. Salt is bad for us especially people like me (African American). Toooo many of us die every year of High Blood Pressure because of toooo much sodium.
If you give it a try with an open mind and let your taste adjust...like a baby, you will really learn to enjoy vegetables in their natural state and herbs and spices instead of just salt.
Don't get me wrong...salt to me is delicious but my health and life taste so much better mentally!
You'll learn a lot of stuff about how to breath properly, how to exercise properly and tons of other stuff. Maybe you're a fitness, nutrition wiz but for me it was very educational and has changed my life!
Thanks Michael Thurmond!
Oh, and apparently the man knows what he's talking about if he was the expert on a top, Hollywood show!
Book Description
If it were a simple choice, many people would choose to treat and care for their pets with natural therapies. Unfortunately, most cat care-givers find the expectations and requirements of natural pet health care fairly imposing and outside their reality in regards to cat care. Unlike the other resources on the subject, Whole Health for Happy Cats provides readers with the basic information to enable them to ask the right questions as well as find the right answers for their cat and their lifestyle. For individuals interested in caring for their cat without the use of drugs or chemicals, Whole Health for Happy Cats will enable them to incorporate holistic treatments into their lifestyle and benefit from reduced health care costs and a longer and healthier life for their cat. Although the book's approach is organic, it also presents well-documented health facts and research so that cat owners can make the very best decisions for their cat's lifelong health and well-being.
Customer Reviews:
What a great book for caring cat lovers!.......2007-09-27
I first became acquainted with the author through her Holisticat cat health list. I can't even tell you how helpful that list was to me, offering alternatives to what my vet was telling me was the ONLY course of action for a beloved pet.
This book, the result of years of Sandy's own research and input from cat health experts and feline enthusiasts alike, is superb.
It's not meant to be a medical handbook. Rather, what it does is offer lots of information about what it takes to keep your favorite feline happy and healthy. Preventive care is the focus. If you want to know more about specific illnesses and want great depth in that info, buy Dr. Goldstein's book instad.
Get this one for the following reasons:
1) the author clearly loves the animals she's writing about; her compassion for them and the love she feels for them come through on every page;
2) the author's clear explanations, including substitutions and warnings;
3) the author's thoroughness with her chosen subject matter; and
4) the invaluable information itself, especially the dietary info.
Buy this book; you won't regret the purchase.
Excellent Beginners Guide.......2007-07-08
Well-designed, written, and bulleted, peppered with graphs, recipes and action-oriented questions with illustrated answers, using lots of color photos on glossy paper... it is not remotely boring.
Love the simplicity and action-oriented perspective. It really IS a "guide" in how to improve the quality of life for a pet, and would be a great starter for any pet owner who wants a quick overview.
P.S. Also adds in cute little trivia... for example:
"Did you know... a group of kittens = 'kindle' and a group of cats is a 'clowder?'" Too cute, riiiight?
The BEST Cat Care Bible.......2007-04-09
Over the years, I have read and consulted many animal and cat care resources for a variety of reasons. I first got into holistic animal care when my best friend, Nina the cat, was dying and no traditional vet could help & I had no clue about this stuff. Since then, I discovered numerous books but none has been as informative and up-to-date as this one.
Not only is the information coming from both personal experience and from veterinary approved sources, but Sandy Arora speaks to you in her book as a compassionate, understanding friend who wants to help & has been in your shoes many times.
Unfortunately, in animal-care circles, you can also encounter many who only want to 'preach' or condemn you and make you feel bad, for doing things a bit differently or your own way. None of that can be found here, for Arora offers alternative ways of doing things, especially if you do not have the time, resources or inclination of feeding an exclusively raw diet to your cat. This is a refreshing, gentle, informative and paws-down best book I have ever found, with methods that really WORK.
Opened my eyes!.......2007-01-24
I love my cats and always want to do what is best for them. Imagine my surprise when the author proved logically to me that I wasn't helping keep my pets happy and healthy.
One of my cats has food allergies, and I thought I would have to deal with his sensitive stomach for the rest of his life (15+ years, hopefully). My other cat is overweight. Now they are on a raw diet (commercially produced). Even though it took some persistence, both cats are healthier and happier. Our sensitive stomach cat has thrown up a grand total of once in the last six weeks (when he started the raw diet); he used to throw up at least every other day, even on the hypoallergenic food. Our fat cat has lost weight and has much more energy. She still gets dry food at night, but we treat it like dessert and she only gets a tiny amount.
Both cats also have terribly anxiety about going to the vet. We have successfully used Rescue Remedy (suitably diluted) to calm their stress. My vet thinks I'm crazy, but she can't argue with the results.
Thanks, Ms. Arora, for helping me improve my cats' quality of life. If my cats are happy, I'm happy.
Thank You, Thank You, Sandy Arora!.......2006-12-05
My bookcase is full of volume after volume of cat-related reading material. Some of this material dates back several years, even decades; however, most is much more current than that, touting some of the biggest names in the "industry." Even as current as most of this material is suppose to be, I have difficulty trusting some of it, especially the discussions on diet. Many of these authors are highly regarded as experts in the animal health field, yet, I still cannot find myself trusting a lot of what I read. Actually, some of the information has even been confirmed as outright dangerous and should not even be said in the same breath as "cat," let alone be recommended for use with a cat.
Sandy Arora's book, "Whole Health for Happy Cats," fills the void that has existed for so long on my bookshelves. She demonstrates herself to be articulate and informative--(it appears she has good background and training in research methodology),-- backing up her information with plenty of documentation, references, and resources.
Being interested in nutrition most of my life, I truly appreciate her guidance on diet. In particular, her knowledge of raw feeding transcends most of what is being offered up by the expert gurus. Here is a lady who really understands what "species appropriate" means (without being dictatorial about it).
I've been practicing holistic methods with everyone in my household, furry or non, for over twenty years. I can only come to the conclusion that Ms. Arora proverbially "eats, sleeps, and *you know what*" cats (holistically, of course) because she seems to have covered just about every imaginable area of SAFE holistic cat care remedies, cat well-being, and cat health: from the nutritional end to the herbal end to the homeopathic end to, well, there is practically no end to what Ms. Arora covers in "Whole Health for Happy Cats." And her book is soooooo much fun to look at while you read it, with beautiful pictures (not just drawings) and informative sidebars and tables. (The picture on page 45 is especially amusing.) As an added bonus, I can actually go over to her discussion forum and ask her for clarification of anything in her book. (Pretty cool, eh?)
I do have one request: At the end of the book, Ms. Arora has added an appendix that outlines a few infectious diseases. You know the ones: FIV, FIP, FeLV; the ones that, when your vet diagnoses them, cause the contents of your stomach to leap into your throat. Sandy provides some wonderful info to assist those who have to bear the burden of that kind of news concerning their kitty. She helps to take away some of the feeling of helplessness that seems so prevalent with these diseases. And she gives the reader treatment options to help extend not only the life, but the quality of the infected kitty's life. My request? Please, Ms. Arora, if you have another book in you, take this subject of disease/illness/conditions and expand upon as many as you can, extending what you have already hit upon in your appendix and nutritional sections: FIP, FIV, FeLV, IBD, CRF, diabetes, and cancer, to name a few that you've touched upon already. It would be wonderful to have a "trustworthy" up-to-date cat-specific book that details different diseases and conditions, holistic treatment options, and nutritional support. It would probably save a lot of kitty parents a lot of grief and frustration, and give a lot of ill kitties a higher quality of life.
"Whole Health for Happy Cats." I would think your cats would indeed be happy if you followed Sandy Arora's advice. Less trips to the vet, tastier, healthier food choices, beautiful fur and skin, healthier teeth, healthier immune systems, and, most importantly, HAPPIER CATS: 'Cause "If kitty ain't happy, noooooobody's happy................"......or something like that.

A Book We All Must Have.......2007-02-22
We have been waiting for that book for a long time. Peggy Holman's Change Handbook is now available in its second edition. Since its first edition in 1999, it has increased in volume and in significance. Holman and her co-authors describe 61 collaborative methods that can be applied for working with large groups in private corporations, the public sector and for the development of democratic institutions. The book provides more than a thesaurus and an encyclopedia of change - it contains probably more than 90% of the current world knowledge on whole systems change applications. Beside the well-known methods and frameworks such as Open Space Technology, Appreciative Inquiry, etc. there are a lot of new methods that I have never heard of. Unfortunately, there is no article on Worldwork and the Process Oriented Psychology Framework. Next Edition, please?
The Change Handbook is very well organized, methods are categorized and there are good hints for when to apply the different methodologies. It is a must for Change Practitioners. If you are keen on The Standard Reference, you need to buy The Change Handbook.
Utterly Phenomenal: *The* Book for Living Life to the Fullest.......2007-01-28
I could spend the rest of my life trying to learn, use, and share each of the methods in this book, and never finish. When it was first published in 1999, it was before its time. Now, in 2006, this is a book made for our times, when Burning Man is now Green Man, Al Gore is a rock star, and even the greediest Wall Street CEO is starting to realize the party is over and we have to get real, real fast.
I have been an admirer of Free/Open Source Software (F/OSS) and a champion of Open Source Intelligence (OSINT), and have gradually learned about other "opens" that are coming to the fore: Open Spectrum, Open Access, Open Culture, Open Innovation, and of course George Soros' Open Society. From this book I now add Open Circle, to complement the Open Space concept I learned recently in Seattle's Town Hall while listening to Paul Hawken talk about the World Index for Social and Environmental Responsibility.
I have to confess that this book is over-whelming, and I can barely scratch the surface. This is more of a book where you should read one author, one segment, each night, and fall asleep thinking about how to implement that one small section, how to embrace someone else and engage them with that one method.
Having three teen-agers, all three of whom have completely rejected the prison/child care format and the rote learning objectives of the current school system (even as good as it is in Fairfax County) I will go so far as to say that this book, combined with serious games/games for change, is a complete one-to-one substitute for our current educational process.
Everything in here is what we *should* have learned in school, what we *should* be practicing in fulfilling our civic duty (what we *actually* do is described in "The Cheating Culture," "Confessional of an Economic Hit-Man," and "Rogue Nation").
I am moving quickly and heavily into the intersection of Collective Intelligence (see my reviews of "The Tao of Democracy," "Smart Mobs," "Wisdom of the Crowds," or my longer list; and Natural Capitalism with its "true cost" meme. See my reviews of Paul Hawken et al, "Ecology of Commerce" and "Natural Capitalism," of the varied books by Herman Daly, and soon, my reviews of "The Great Turning," the "Omnivore's Dilemma," and others. For a broader sense of the possibilities, check out "Earth Intelligence Network" online.
I still have the 1970's operating manual for spaceship earth someplace in my lower library. This book is the manual for spaceship earth for our children and those of us recommiting ourselves to the joy of learning and changing in our later years. It's not over until *we* decide its over.
Great Refrence to Systemes Chamge.......2007-01-11
The Change Handbook: The Definitive Resource on Today's Best Methods for Engaging Whole Systems by Tom Devane, Steven Cady, and Peggy Holman (Berrett-Koehler Publishers) is the most comprehensive guide available to methods of organization and community change. It's designed for quick and easy access to information about high leverage change from today's foremost practitioners. This new edition is updated to describe more than 43 additional change methods and includes new chapters on selecting a method, mixing and matching methods, and responsibilities of the people involved, conditions for success, and more. This tremendously expanded second edition--400 pages longer, nearly twice the length of the first edition--will undoubtedly become the definitive resource in this rapidly expanding area.
This book offers practical insights and how to affect systems in positive ways to make them do the things we wish them to do and to mitigate the harm caused by some systems. Anyone who is interested in social change and personal change at any level will find the practical suggestions for intervention in this book to be positively enlightening.
In 1999, the first edition of The Change Handbook provided a snapshot of a nascent field that broke barriers by engaging "whole systems" of people from organizations and communities in creating their own future. In the last seven years, the field has exploded. In this completely revised and updated second edition, lead authors Peggy Holman, Tom Devane, and Steven Cady profile sixty-one change methods--up from eighteen in the first edition. Nineteen of these methods are explored in depth, with case studies, answers to frequently asked questions, and details on the roles and responsibilities of the people involved, conditions for success, and more. This tremendously expanded second edition--400 pages longer, nearly twice the length of the first edition--will undoubtedly become the definitive resource in this rapidly expanding area.
Simply put I can not find enough superlatives for the utility of this volume when it comes to explaining the practical steps necessary in systems change. The book is so comprehensive that many of the chapters could actually be books themselves. What is useful here is that one finds the boiled down essential information in one place. By offering potpourri of possible strategies group facilitators and therapists do not become overly committed to only a few strategies, but can find new ways to do old things better and with less effort and ways to evaluate old efforts that may have been well-intentioned but the intervention was misdirected. The book is a wonderful reference to the important evolving field of systems analysis and change. You overlook this volume at your peril.
