Strauss was a self-described chick repellant--complete with large, bumpy nose, small, beady eyes, glasses, balding head, and, worst of all, painful shyness around women. He felt like "half a man." That is, until a book editor asked him to investigate the community of pickup artists. Strauss's life was transformed. He spent two years bedding some fine chiquitas and studying with some of the North America's most suave gents--including the best of them all, the God of the pickup "community," a man named Mystery.

Mystery is an aspiring Toronto magician who charges $2,250 for a weekend pickup workshop. He is not much to look at: a cross between a vampire and a computer geek. But by using high-powered marketing techniques he's turned seduction into an effortless craft--even inventing his own vocabulary. His technique sounds like a car salesman's tip sheet: his main rule is FMAC--find, meet, attract, close. He employs the "three-second rule"--always approach a woman within three seconds of first seeing her in order to avoid getting shy. Other tricks: Intrigue a beautiful woman by pretending to be unaffected by her charm; also, never hit on a woman right away. Start with a disarming, innocent remark, like "Do you think magic spells work?" or "Oh my god, did you see those two girls fighting outside?" And finally, the most important characteristic of the pickup artist--smile.

After two years, Strauss ends up becoming almost as successful as Mystery, but he comes to an important realization. His techniques were actually off-putting to the woman he ended up falling in love with. And they never prepared him for actually having a relationship. "They treat women as the enemy. And we're not, I swear!" wrote a female reviewer. As its title 'The Game' implies, Neil Strauss does not describe men and women as enemies at war, but as players on opposite sides of the same game. And most men happen to be ill-prepared to play this game as well as their female opponents. Unfortunately, this game can turn serious at any given moment.

At the very least, most guys who were raised by single moms and men who had sweet doormats as fathers are doomed in their relationships with women. The average wussboy got to be very lucky or he'll end up in the gutter, emotionally and/or literally. For starters, thousands of men are paying child support for other men's children. Hard evidence of DNA tests may be on the guy's side, gold-digging chicks and the "law" may not be his friends at all. Here we are at war indeed, aren't we?

Alas, you don't need children to be taken for the ride of your lifetime by a nice and friendly girl. Ask Paul McCartney. On your first date with the most lovely, intelligent, and witty lady you have ever met you better be aware of possibly flirting with your worst nightmare you may never recover from for the rest of your days. Material that allows men to approach women with a healthy dosage of emotional detachment is worth it's weight in gold. 'The Game' qualifies many times over.

Falling in love head over heals is--and always has been--reserved for the ultimate sucker, and perhaps Neil's book prevents the worst cases of loving idiocy and bankruptcy. Feeling confident and free to meet as many women as they wish permits guys to find the needle in the haystack. The first girl who is willing to sleep with a man is not likely to be his best bet. Duh. After meeting 80 or two hundred women, he may be better equipped to pick and choose.

So many men are scared to death to even talk to a woman. 'The Game' teaches how to defuse potential land mines every guy has stumbled over in the pre-relationship stage of male-female communication. Goodness, every woman who wants a real man as a life partner will appreciate that or she isn't worth having dinner with.

Last but not least, Neil Strauss' sense of humor makes for a grand experience of his unusual world.

Manipulation, date rape, shallowness.......2007-10-01

I can't even begin to describe the serious flaws in this book... I'm too lazy to make a detailed critique...

But I gave it one star instead of zero because, if you want to study logic and how to detect subtly and not so subtly flawed arguments, buy this book.

There are serious flaws in their methodology [ie, apparently their tricks work for all kinds of girls, as long as you only hit on traditionally-cute looking barflies... And manipulative techniques are emphasized as the determining factor, yet their workshops also teach teach non-manipulative self-improvement techniques which may also have been a determining factor], and this book should have been renamed The Mysogynist's Training Manual, because they basically teach how to manipulate women into sleeping with them
(Also, it's hard not to get affected at least temporarily by their messed up views of women)

I sold this book a long time ago, but should have burned it instead.

This book is amazing. I read this book flat out in one day. I couldn't drop it, once you begin to read it you just won't let go. Its not as much of how to pick up a women as the title may suggest but it holds loads of information you can pick out and use. It proves that any average frustrated chump can become a pick up artist and pushes you to become something that you never dreamed possible.

I would recommend 'The Game' to anyone who fears women and wants to burn into his brain that IT CAN HAPPEN if you apply the knowledge you have been given.

With it's provocative title, this book can seem like something to be afraid of. on the contrary, Rob Bell does an excellent job at not only sharing a fair perspective of sex and spirituality both with and without Christian orientation, but he also walks the reader through it quite easily. With an almost Socratic approach, the reader can realize meanings and derive personal conclusions through the authors suggestive questioning (much more pleasant than if the auther were to share an epiphany and use the rest of the book as means of persuasion, especially with such a bold subject)

Sex Is Not The Answer.......2007-09-07

This was an excellent book if you are looking to understand why sex is so prevalent in this day and age when we all seem to be ever more so disconnected from reality.

Let's Talk About Sex.......2007-08-29

I can't say enough good things about this book. It is completely unique. It compares sex to spirituality. Specifically, it compares sex to having an intimate relationship with God. Bell says you can't talk about one without talking about the other. He makes a strong case, although it is not written in a linear style. He meanders from stories to conversations to scenes from the Bible to secular quotes. His writing style is very Eastern. By that, I mean it does not go in a straight line. Instead the writing goes in circles and comes back on itself, allowing your mind to digest Bell's thoughts.

This is what I got out of this book: Our extreme desire for sex is really a desire for a relationship with God. Now, I can just hear people saying right now: "No, uh, I really want sex." Bell is not saying we should do without sex, but rather, sex is a physical expression of our truest desire: to be completely naked in front of someone and be unashamed; to be unconditionally loved and swallowed whole; to be connected with someone in the deepest way possible. In his chapter, Make Whoopee Forever, Bell says he thinks of heaven as one big orgy, where we are all the swallowed into Christ's complete and utter love. The joy and agony of sex, according to Bell, is that you come together but are then torn apart. In heaven, the tearing apart won't happen. It will be connection with all beings around you.

Bell covers all sorts of topics: pornography, male/female relationships, why marriages fail. And he does it in his signature writing style. Short paragraphs, some of them only lasting a sentence. The result is a book that flows and reads quickly.

It is also just a beautiful book to look at and hold. The cover is very smooth and soothing, with stripes in different colors. It kind of reminded me of a desert. The pages have a crisp feel. It is one of those books when you open it and you smell that really good book smell. Lastly, there is a small cracking noise when you open the cover. The pages are a soft pink color. I read a chapter a night and finished it in about a week.

Whether you are Christian or not, I think this book is a winner. It brings a unique perspective to the topic of spirituality. And you may never look at sex the same way again. I think you could give these to age 17 through adult. There is nothing inappropriate in it, but the concepts would be difficult to understand without some mental maturity.

Okay, so I know that Rob Bell is an excellent communicator, I have known him since his college days. So was James Jones, Joe Smith, David Karesh, Hitler...But they all lead to the demise of truth. I believe Rob had some good things to say in both Sex God and Velvet Elvis, it is too bad that he didn't mean to say those things. As far as the rest of the ramblings of self-doubt that he displays, it is a tragedy. It amazes me how people (see quotes) can't pick up a BIBLE and see the same things. It amazes me how people are substituting books such as SEX GOD, for the Truth of the Bible. It is the emergent way though. Test everything---whatever you believe as long as God fits in somewhere your Golden. The thing that amazes me is when Rob says that he is not part of the "Emergent Movement" but that is all he is, and all he has ever been. Please don't make the mistake of walking on the very breath of Rob Bell. He is human---he has made and will continue to make mistakes (this book is one of them). 2 Peter 2- But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. they will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying th sovereign Lord who bought them- bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2Peter 2:18 they mouth empty boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful deisres of sinful human nature, they entice people who are just escaping form those who live in error. They promise freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity-for man is a slave to whatever has mastered him. In this case it is Rob Bell himself. When asked where he was living, he said "downtown among the sinners, in a not so nice neighborhood", and that is why he lives in a half-million dollar condo. Alright book, but doesn't replace the Bible, and Rob doesn't replace God.

This book is wonderful - it's very simple and easy to follow with lots of example to illustrate more complicated concepts.
I have so called "lazy ovaries" and only menstruate around 4-5 times a year. With a better understanding of how my body works and how to know the best time to conceive, we bingo'd on our first try to have a baby. Enough said!

This is a well written book that makes understanding your hormones and fertility logical and reasonable. I bought this book on a recomendation from my Sister In-Law and I am so glad I did. Side effects of birth control pills can be hard on a woman's body both physically and mentally. This book provides lots of information for understanding the ins and outs of fertility. I have used it succesfully in both avoiding and achieving pregnancy.

Everything you never knew you wanted to know..........2007-10-04

This book is not JUST about babies and getting pregnant! In fact, I think a more appropriate title for this book might be something like "Taking Charge of Your Reproductive Health." Before a friend recommended TCOYF, I would have passed right by it without a second glance in the bookstore. The "fertility" thing in the title would have made me think it was only for people who wanted to become pregnant, which would have rendered it useless to me. This publication is FAR more than that, though! This a great book for women who want to become pregnant, those who don't, and those who just want to learn more about their bodies and their cycles. My friend recommended this book to me after she had her first child. (Imagine that!) She said the book taught her more about her own body than she ever thought she needed to know and she was infinitely grateful. She was right on! You will learn amazing things about your body and you may just be inclined to start paying attention to changes and things you never noticed before. This book demystifies a lot of what females go through due to normal, regular bodily functions on a regular basis -- and it does so using plain English, clear examples, and some charming anecdotal passages. Buy it. Chart for a month and see if YOU'RE not hooked!

The book covers similar ground as 'She Comes First', which I also recommend. Michaels writes her book informally and conversationally.

The author's background as speech pathologist gives her a great deal of credibility - particularly when discussing the tongue. That's the strongest point. It's also a quick read. The weak point is that the book is good enough that it does not need the occasional sarcastic quips to support it. Sometimes it seemed that the authors were embarassed by the subject matter and felt the need to lighten it up. Understandable, but sometimes it smacked of too much effort. Drop some sarcasm and the book could be even better than it is. Even as is, it's still 4 stars. Let's see if it merits 5 big Os.

This textbook is very suitable for personal education. It explores every aspect of human sexuality and covers everything from prenatal sexual development to issues encountered by the elderly. Also covered: homosexuality; theories on love; the role of fantasy; prostitution, sexually transmitted diseases; masturbation; celibacy; contraception; rape; sexual dysfunction; and how diabetes and other chronic diseases impact our sexual lives. It short, this book covers it all. Let's face it, we're all a little uncomfortable discussing sexuality. Get this book to get the straight scoop.

The book was good but the condition I recieved it in was terrible. I ordered a used book from e-campus through amazon that said in very good condition. Very good condition apparently means years of wear and tear on the book along with highlighter marks and stamps on random parts of the book. Also the hard cover was dented in and the corners bent down and peeling. I can't really complain though since it was only 60 bucks instead of 128. I just wish the status of the book was not exaggerated.

Best textbook I've ever been assigned to read...........2007-01-03

I purchased this textbook for a human sexuality 3500 class. I took the class online, thus the importance of my comprehension of the material within the text was crucial. I may have slightly enjoyed a textbook on occasion, but more often than not they are simply a means to a grade. This was not the case with "Our Sexuality", which I loved! Sources cited within the text have led me to more reading, I even purchased a few first editions of the works of Kinsey, Ellis, and Masters & Johnson that were referenced early on. I had a friend visiting from out of state and she read the entire textbook over her weeklong stay. I briefly questioned selling the book back, (I normally await, eagerly, at the chance of pawning off my pile of overpriced unused crap that they call textbooks.) But the need to purchase new overpriced crap for the coming semester led me to list the book on EBay, it sold for $50.

I saved almost $30 by purchasing the textbook through Amazaon instead of the bookstore. Amazon has certainly become my preference for purchasing textbooks.

So I noticed a lot of people bashing this book for Chelsea being a pill-poppin tramp who only loves vodka and sex... and she WAS, but I found this book hilarious!!! I am in my late 20's and found this book to be extremely funny, witty and courageous (because Lord knows I wouldn't write about my past sex life for all my family and friends to read!)

I laughed nearly the entire book - especially about the S&M guy who wanted to be "smacked". HAHA!

Good job Chelsea! You continue to make me laugh and I'll def pick up another one of your books! See you on E!

Hilarious, fast read.......2007-09-20

One of the funniest, laugh out loud books ive ever read. It's become a favorite gift to give to my girlfriends!

The title really IS misleading.......2007-09-06

This book really is about Chelsea's "near misses". Instead of gloriously detailed sex-capades, her writings were more about her trying to weasel out of sex related situations. Reading it, I had a hard time believing that her character was even having sex at all. There was all this fluff concerning wild and crazy conversations/situations that would ultimately lead up to the 'come back to my room?' moment, which would then be quickly followed with her chickening out and having to find a less than tactful means of escape. I was left thinking that her character would be the type to walk around shouting 'I'm a slut! Come on boys!', when in reality all she would do is kiss. Not very promiscuous. The entire book was impersonal and, at times, had struggled to remain witty. It was surprising to find that by the last five or six pages, Chelsea actually began to write in a more biographical style where you began to feel some sort of raw emotion from her, which had been refreshing after two-hundred pages of emptiness. I don't regret having read it, I'm just a little sad with the money wasted purchasing it.

While I am a fan of Chelsea's stand up I found reading it and hearing it in the voice of hers I'm familiar with even more entertaining. Not all the jokes I've heard live on her show have the kind of punch that the material in this laugh out loud book does. It's a great book if you want to have a really good time and also have the freedom to put it down after each chapter/story. You can use this book as your light pick me up reading between deeper, darker, heavier reading.

Just so we're clear this book will teach you nothing about sex. It is in no way "erotic". Chelsea is merely offering up her sex life as comic material that is truly unique!

Best Book Ever!!!!.......2007-09-12

This book isn't so much about the mechanics of sex as the nature of love and desire in a monogamous relationship. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of great factual information about sex, but speaking as a woman, I have always been more curious about the deeper and more substantial mystery of love. This book really delves into that mystery and supplies a lot of expert relationship advice arising from the physical realities of the human body. For example, cuddling releases a hormone called oxcytocin in females and massage releases the hormone vassopressin in men. These hormones encourage feelings of closeness, fidelity and nesting in humans. Spending time massaging your guy actually helps build your relationship, and demanding that he spend time with his arm or leg over you will make you feel more appreciated. Even if you already knew this great little fact, you should still read this book because there are more of these cool tidbits and the book espouses a powerful new way for women to look at sex. Before I read this book, I was caught in a traditional outlook on female sexuality. I thought that sex just wasn't very fun for me and it wasn't really supposed to be fun for me. I had tried other books, but found that the "techniques" they suggested led to some embarrassing situations. I had asked my gynecologist if their was something wrong with me that made sex just no fun. I thought that porn was a necessary evil and didn't really understand why guys spend any time at all watching the stuff. After reading this book, I can truly say that I get why my guy seems to be the way he is. I have implemented some of the suggestions, and man alive, my sex life has been soooo much better. This is my first online review of a book and it is because I just had to come and gush about this book.

I got this book and "She Comes First" 15 days ago as my anniversary gift to my boyfriend and me. He has been too busy with work to read "She Comes First", so I started reading "He comes next." Just this book has been truly great for our relationship. The cover is very suggestive and one of the best parts of the book. While he is walking around the apartment, I will lounge on the chair reading. I have caught him staring at me a bunch. I know it turns him on to see me reading a book about how to turn him on. Further, the book is a page turner. I come home and the first thing I want to do is pick it up and read. I have to hold myself back to wait for my boyfriend to be around. Having read this book, I want to give it to my friend as a wedding present. This book is worth its weight in diamonds.

A great learning experience.......2007-08-17

I read She Comes First by the same author before I read this one which was just as educational for me as it is for a man. That being said, He Comes Next was quite a learning experience! While I am good at "it", there's always room for improvement in whatever you're doing and reading this book cemented that belief. It helped me understand how a man thinks and why and how he feels (not so different from us ladies) about sensitive issues. I expected the book to be primarily about learning to give a better oral sex like She Comes First is, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was much more to it than that. I did, however, appreciate the education I got about oral sex. I certainly hope to satisfy my partner better now-emotionally and physically.

I'd give this book a big O for outstanding. This book goes beyond just serving as a how-to on having great sex, but first and foremost provides a how-to on having a great relationship. (And, believe it or not, the two really are connected.) Continually entertaining, informative, and insightful from cover to cover, this book will likely suck (ok, puns are hard to avoid in writing this review) you in from the start and keep your attention throughout. I picked this book up on a whim and read it cover to cover without putting it down. The author truly "has a handle" on how to please a man. He is straightforward and provides easy to understand instruction. I would recommend this book to anyone. I was amazed at what I learned and just applying a few of the techniques in this book will maximize your and your partner's experience.

I decided to buy this book because I've always had problems reaching orgasm when my husband and I make love, and I was hopeful that there was something I hadn't tried. This book is great, especially for a woman who hadn't really tried the technique the author suggests. I guess I thought there was something wrong with it, or I hadn't thought of using manipulation and intercourse together. But the author makes a good case for the point of view of the book, and even though I am relatively inexperienced at masturbation, I decided to practice more as the author suggests. I would recommend this book as an augmentation to other sexual literature, depending on how experienced you are, whether you do or do not have difficulty reaching climax. It gives more detailed and complete explanations than many, somewhat more than your average "improve your relationship" type of books give. From talking to some of my other women friends, especially those who are not embarrassed to admit they still haven't gotten it "right," many of us could use this refresher course in making love.

WOW! I give this book FOUR stars for the step by step instructions and a sense of humor to make it go down easier. I am 40 years old and sex has gotten to be so much trouble, my husband and I hardly ever do it anymore. I've always been able to masturbate to orgasm but couldn't achieve orgasm through intercourse. I learned there is nothing wrong with me and most women need direct or indirect clitoral stimulation to reach orgasm.

This book deserves FIVE stars for giving me more self confidence to experiment, and for giving me the courage to try using what I already knew in a new way. I'm a little more adventurous and more aware of what works and as a result of reading this book, I'm consistently reaching orgasm with my husband during sex and it doesn't take all night - which we are both too tired to handle anyway!!

This book was great but the problem is that it is more of an explanation on the mystery method than a "how to" book. It gives few examples of gambits (conversations starters to disarm & attract targets). The reader is basically encouraged to go out & figure it out through constant trial & error. What I loved most is the explanations of differences between men & women & why women do some of the crazy things they do (this alone is worth the price of the book). I t tells you what attracts women & how to choose the right thing to say & what body language you express. Again it does not actually tell you what to say & only very few gambits (you must be able to switch from on story to another effortlessly without pause to keep target intrigued & wanting more). The reader is left to come up with their own material or purchase it from his website.

The Real Deal.......2007-09-30

I just finished watching "The Pick-up Artist" on WeTV with Mystery as its host and it really proved to be entertaining! I met my girlfriend being "cocky and funny" in that I showed humor, confidence, and flirtation which are the basics of what Mystery teaches. Overall, a great read! You'd be surprised how many men are clueless on how to approach women. Also, there are so many women who are intimidated by men approaching them if they have a boyfriend or husband. They freak out and don't take it as a compliment!

Well, having read both books... I still say what a crock of crap. The book is more aptly named how to manipulate women and get laid.

Perfect for every guy who is having trouble getting laid and is in no real need of a relationship or has any desire on how to actually have a relationship... Just pretend your way from bed to bed...

I'm not saying that is a bad thing. For some men, and women or that matter, this works and he/she is happy with it. But this book should not be read with the idea that this is the way to find, build and have a lasting love based on anything trusting, vulnerable, or real.

Women should read this book, so they can spot these guys when they come around and make a decision knowing what is really going on.

So, why did I rate the book a 5? The book says exactly what it says it does... teaches exactly what it says it teaches. It is the responsibility of each reader to decide if that is the desired knowledge and outcome he is seeking.

Informative, but It won't make you happy..........2007-09-29

I'll start off saying that this book is worth reading because it will teach you about people, both men and women. Any book that is ranked #27 at amazon that is about THIS topic is obviously special. There are many books that promise guys sex with beautiful women, but few make it in the top 10000, let alone the top 100. What makes this one different?

I think because it explains how mating in human beings works in a progression and from an evolutionary psychology standpoint, while at the same time applying it to the bar/club/party scene.

The idea is this: High quality women look for high quality men. They won't have sex with you until they see you as high quality. This means you either have to actually BE high quality, or you have to give the illusion of being high quality. This book teaches you to mostly do the 2nd, not the 1st.

Peacocking, memorizing canned material, learning palm reading and magic tricks, pretending to have lots of friends and women, telling fictional stories as the truth, these things don't make you higher quality. They only create the illusion. This makes sense, after all, the author is a professional illusionist.

If you want a higher-quality woman LONG TERM, make yourself higher quality. This book mostly teaches you how to fake it long enough to get them into bed.

This method, if followed diligently and practiced A LOT, may get you in bed with some 10s. But it won't last because eventually the real you and the real her will surface and there will be no more game, just an awkward incompatibility.

I would much rather be with a 7 who is a good person, intelligent, and loyal, than a 10 who is spoiled, thinks the world owes her a living because of her beauty, and will soon cheat on you (and how could she not, she has male-10s offering her sex 24/7 - are you THAT great she would turn them all down?).

If you want sex in a relationship that will make you happy, it will probably be with someone who is about as good quality as you are. That is the only way you will both appreciate each other long term and stay loyal to each other.

This is a fantastic read. Essentially, this could be considered an affective textbook for attraction and social dynamics applicable to nearly any situation. If you've ever wanted more out of your interraction with other people, read this book.

I purchased this book for my husband shortly after discovering his sexual addiction. He found it spoke to him so profoundly that he insisted I read it as well. It has a lot of information on a difficult topic presented in a way that just makes sense. By the end of the book, I felt real hope for his recovery. We have since purchased numerous other books by this same author.

An Excellent Book for Recovery.......2007-08-17

I've been in and out of therapy for nearly ten years trying to figure out what exactly was going on with me, but I realize now my problem was I was trying to treat my symptoms, like anxiety and depression, instead of the real problem. I read "Out of the Shadows" and was shocked at how accurately it described me and my life, and I realized my addiction has been destroying relationships with people I love and controlling my life for over half of my life. I'm a bit apprehensive about 12-step programs, but I'm fortunate to have a father who has completed the program and believes in it, so I've signed up today and will give it a try. From the book, the strangest thing about recovery is this paradox: you have to admit that you are powerless over your addiction in order to begin separating yourself from it. I had always thought I had to just ignore cravings like I did to quit smoking, or fight tooth-and-nail with willpower. But you have to seek help outside yourself to really get better. It's going to hurt, but not as bad as the fact I've lost forever some relationships I wish I could have back. I won't do that again.

Help put words to the turmoil you go through.......2007-07-16

Reading this book has helped me find the path towards the journey to finding the right words to describe what I was going through. As a codependent, you feel isolated, this book will make you feel like you are not going crazy and you are not alone! If you have a partner struggling and in denial, buy two of them and read the book together. Realization is part of the keys towards recovery.

Begin To Understand.......2007-07-13

This book is essential for anyone who is struggling with sex addiction. It provides insight and wisdom that helps to unravel the mystery and reduce the shame around compulsive sexual behavior.

This book is sometimes criticized for suggesting that 12-step programs should be a regular part of the addict's recovery. While this may be an issue for some people, I strongly suggest that you not let it deter you from buying the book. The suggestions are merely suggestions, and shouldn't be interpreted as being absolutely essential for one's recovery.

Regardless of whether or not you agree with everything that is suggested, this book will still teach you a great deal about the nature of sexual addiction, and open the door for you to make the changes necessary to rid yourself of this toxic, compulsive behavior and improve your relationships with friends, family, and yourself.

12 Step as a treatment?.......2007-06-04

In reading Out of the Shadows Dr.Carnes is very much in favor of a 12 Step program to treat sex and love addiction. In my opinion, this is a disservice to people afflicted with this behavioral problem; I'm one of them. I've been to many SLAA meetings, and know that sitting in a room and listening to other dysfunctional people recite stories is not therapeutic. No feedback from experts is provided, in fact no feedback at all is provided. It's empty words falling on empty ears. Additionally, many of the attendees are addicted to 12-Step programs and go to a different on several times per week. Many attendees have deeper psychological problems than sex addiction and need help that a 12 Step program couldn't possibly provide.

There is no evidence that 12-Step programs work any better than any other type of behavioral intervention. As Dr.Carnes must know, there is much evidence that they don't work at all and that there is an extremely high failure rate for all 12-Step programs. The concept that God will fix it, that you are powerless, that by turning it over to the ever-popular "higher power" will make everything better...I can't believe that a man of Dr.Carnes' education would suggest that ANY behavior or addiction treatment could benefit from such nonsensical concepts. Additionally, calling sex and love addition a disease is inappropriate and untrue. Cancer is a disease. Alcoholism is a disease. Sex and love addiction is a learned, acquired and adopted habit/behavior. While I believe the book offers very real life examples of the damage this behavior can do, it gives false hope to people by suggesting that by starting a 12-Step program, a program with such a long history of lies, deceit and failure, they can change their behavior and their lives.

I realize all meetings aren't the same, but the 12-Steps they're based on are, and there is much evidence to suggest that this method of recovery is, at best, flawed.
