5 out of 5 stars Great and motivating resource.......2007-10-05

The Eat Clean Diet provides a simple way of life that will enable you to maintain your figure and your health. It's written simply and clear. It works, too. If you follow it, you will lose weight. Some of it is common sense, some of it is not. If you get off track, just start over again. Tosca is very motivating. Although, it was extreme at some points; it was very straightforward. I also purchased the Eat Clean Cookbook.

4 out of 5 stars Same old song.......2007-10-01

Much of the same stuff you hea about all the time, in reference to keeping the metabolism "fired up". I would have like to seen more of the known benifits to each fruit and vegtable specifically but it wasnt broken down in detail. All in all its a step in the rite direction for anyone looking for a healthy way of life. Though i can tell you the whole book in 2 lines .....Eat six square meals, and dont eat food that man had a role in producing, striclty all natural and you'll loose weight!

5 out of 5 stars Love it - Love it - Love it.......2007-10-01

This book is great. It puts clean eating in plain simple terms that is easy to understand and easy to follow. It makes sense.

5 out of 5 stars Just received the The Eat-Clean Diet Cookbook!.......2007-10-01

I don't like to cook - nor do I make time to do it. I'm 33 and have two sons (2 1/2 years old & 6 months). Hubby and I are GOING to "lose the baby weight" so I decided to purchase Tosca Reno's new cookbook. I subscribe to Oxygen so I'm somewhat familiar with her background.
I made my first trip to the store to purchase ingredients for 6 of the cookbook recipes. I cannot believe how inexpensive (except for the tenderloin, but worth it) the items were! The items were easy to find (most of the items I purchased were either in the produce section or the bulk food area).
Between dealing with my kids tonight (baths, books and bed) I managed to make the Vegetarian Chili (even with the roasted garlic) and it's fantastic!! It was so easy! I love it! I also added a few shakes of Ancho Chili powder because I love the smokiness of it. It's going to freeze easily in portion-correct sizes which will help since that is one of my eating issues. It'll be extremely handy to take to work or have for a quick dinnerI'm going to make the Crock-Pot Porridge tonight so I have something warm for my 2 1/2 year old and I to eat in the morning.

Thanks, Tosca!!

5 out of 5 stars Not just a diet.......2007-09-30

This book has changed my life!

I have lost 65 pounds in the last 2 years, but I hit a plateau about 6 months ago. My boyfriend is a personal trainer and heard about this book- he brought it home and things haven't been the same since!

We cleared out our kitchen and bought all fresh food- our refrigerator is now always full of fruit, veggies, and the many meals I make.

We ate low fat but, after reading this book, realized that "low fat" does not mean "healthy". The stuff we were eating was processed and the ingredient lists were FULL of unpronouceable words. We were eating crap! Low fat, but crap none the less!

Don't get me wrong- this is not easy at first. It's a little expensive at the beginning- getting pretty much all new food for the kitchen adds up, but once you have the basics the cost drops dramatically! We also noticed that we are saving a LOT of money by not eating out as much. We didn't realize how much we were spending on take-out!

I had a hard time at first 'cooking'. The stuff I made before was processed, instant stuff- frozen stir frys and such. It was quite an adjustment cooking real meals from scratch. My boyfriend works 2 jobs and I work LONG hours every day as a 911 operator. It was very difficult to find time to cook, but now its a routine and I don't even think of it as a chore. Come to find out... I LOVE to cook. Who knew?! I cook now on my days off- I make enough meals (usually 3-5 different dishes) to last a week and we take our little coolers full of food to work and eat throughout the day. It makes it really easy and takes the guesswork out of it. Now we never have the problem of "there's nothing to eat" at our house! We have also found that fresh, homemade food tastes a LOT better than what we used to eat. Both of us agree that the stuff we used to love just doesn't taste good anymore- it tastes fake. We don't even want to eat out like we used to because it doesn't taste right!

I am finally leaning out after my long plateau and my boyfriend (who had a fantastic physique anyway) is looking better than ever! I feel great, have more energy, and have not been sick ONCE since beginning this plan. This coming from the girl that used to catch EVERY bug that went around. I guess my immune system has been boosted by eating such fresh, healthy, nutrient dense food. It's been pretty nice! We do, however, have a "cheat day" once a week. Where before cheat day would be a pizza or something like that, now it basically means a dessert. Neither of us have any desire to gorge ourselves on greasy food. Our tastes have changed quite dramatically.

We are looking to get married and start a family within the next year. I am SO glad we made this change in our lives. I'll feel much better having a baby knowing that it will grow up with good, healthy eating habits. Hopefully he/she will be healthy and not have to deal with the weight issues that I did growing up. We will be eating like this forever- even after I make my weight goal. This really is not a "diet", it's a lifestyle. This is how people SHOULD be eating- the good stuff that God gave us, not man-made "convenience" food. This is not just for people that want to lose weight- it's for anyone that wants to make a positive change in their life and wants to be healthier.

I have read a lot of these reviews and a common theme among the mediocre-negative reviews is that it's "hard". Yes, it is... at first. If you stick it out for 2-3 weeks and force yourself to just make it work, you will find that it becomes a LOT easier. A *LOT* easier. You just have to stick with it and make a commitment- a commitment to yourself to be heatlhier and happier.

I can't recommend this book enough!

PS: I saw some people write that they want something to make them lose weight NOW. Well, this will help you to lose weight at a safe pace. Throw exercise in there and you're on your way. Remember, it took a LONG time to put the weight on, so you can't expect it to come off overnight (I am living proof). Fitness is a journey, not a destination.

Book Description

Based on more than two decades of research, Eat Fat, Lose Fat flouts conventional wisdom by revealing that so-called healthy vegetable oils (such as corn and soybean) are in large part responsible for our national obesity and health crisis, while the saturated fats traditionally considered “harmful” (from such foods as coconut, butter, and meat) are essential to weight loss and health.

Just in time for the FDA's new mandatory trans fats labeling, the three programs in this book, which features delicious recipes, show that eating healthy fats is the answer to losing weight and achieving good health for a lifetime.

“If permanently losing weight while improving your health is a real goal, I highly recommend Eat Fat, Lose Fat.”—Dr. Joseph Mercola, bestselling author of The No-Grain Diet

“Dr. Mary Enig and Sally Fallon are two of the most important voices in the wellness revolution. Eat Fat, Lose Fat is a must read.”
—Jordan S. Rubin, author of The New York Times' bestselling The Maker's Diet

5 out of 5 stars Valuable information.......2007-09-04

This book is an easy read with great information. I would recommend this book to everyone, but especially to those with cholesterol conditions and those with young children. It certainly has changed my way of thinking about food in general, more notably Fats!

5 out of 5 stars Truth of fats.......2007-08-28

I enjoyed reading this book. It has changed my life. It does work and has made eating fun again. I have more energy than I have in 10 years. My skin is glorious and I'm 62 yrs old. My metabolism has kicked in again and I'm doing more. For anyone who suspects the food processing companies and government sanctioning of same, this book really opens your eyes.

4 out of 5 stars Natural Nutrition.......2007-07-30

This book was an eye opener for me... I'd always found it difficult to stick to the "recommended" eating habits and felt that it was not natural... Surely the fat in milk and eggs is healthy I thought but who am I to go against all the "experts"... How can anyone get so much protein in during the day? One cannot; hence the need for all the protein supplements...
The only problem with this book is the fact that its "diet" may not be realistic to follow for many people... I did, however, take the good ideas they have and incorporated them into my own diet...

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!!!!.......2007-05-22

This book is so helpful and explains how fat is processed in your body. I have gotten healthy and also lost weight too!!!

Ingeniously disguised as a weight-loss manual, this bestselling guide to preventing--and in some cases, reversing--heart disease through diet, exercise, and soul nourishing comes from renowned cardiologist Dr. Dean Ornish, the first doctor to prove that there are alternatives to surgery for clearing clogged arteries--namely, diet, exercise, and stress management. Citing his own published research findings, Ornish concludes that eating a vegetarian diet with only 10 percent of the total daily calories from fat is the first step to healthier, happier living. The other key elements--moderate exercise, fostering social support, and reconnecting with the self--take more time and care. For these, Ornish offers about 75 pages of encouraging words, again backed by numerous research findings and his personal experiences.

About 250 gourmet recipes from two dozen famous chefs help ease the blow to those who view becoming vegetarian as a dramatic lifestyle change. The good news is, entrées like Polenta Alla Veneziana and Tofu Gumbo will surely tickle the taste buds; the bad news is, the sheer number of ingredients and lengthy prep time required for most recipes could send readers running back to their favorite fast-food joints. Plenty of cooking methods, tips, and food descriptions help demystify the recipes; Ornish also provides a comprehensive nutritional analysis of common foods as well as for each dish. But the great strength of Eat More, Weigh Less is in Ornish's opening sections, where he builds a solid case for curbing fat, tossing out the meat and dairy, and fostering mental and emotional happiness. --Liane Thomas

Book Description

You really can eat more and weigh less -- if you know what to eat. As this groundbreaking book clearly shows, it's not just how much you eat, it's primarily what you eat.

Most diets rely on small portion sizes to reduce calories sufficiently. You feel hungry and deprived. Dr. Ornish's program takes a new approach: abundance rather than deprivation. If you change the type of food, you don't have to be as concerned about the amount of food. You can eat whenever you're hungry , eat more food -- and still lose weight and keep it off. Simply. Safely. Easily. In this book, you'll find 250 gourmet recipes from the country's most celebrated chefs.

Unlike high-protein diets that may mortage your well-being, Dr. Ornish's diet and lifestyle program is scientifically proven to help you lose weight and gain health. People not only keep off the weight, they lower their cholestoral and reduce their chances for getting heart disease and such other illnesses as breast, prostate, and colon cancer; diabetes; osteoporosis; and hypertension. Dr. Ornish's program has given millions of people new hope and new choices.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Caution -- Too Little Fat Causes Gallstones.......2007-09-18

I thought I'd done sufficient research when I went on this diet. In fact, Ornish's theories have been proven wrong. When you don't eat a moderate amount of healthy fats (olive oil, EFA's, etc.), the bile produced by your liver sits in your gall bladder instead of being used to digest fats. It becomes increasingly concentrated, until the cholesterol in the bile forms into...gallstones. This = extremely painful attacks and either surgery or very intense cleansing diets. Ornish's diet does NOT include enough fats; it is too extreme and based on faulty assumptions. Watch out! Unfortunately, I had to have my gall bladder removed because I meticulously followed his diet, only to learn later that this was a common experience for many people. Save yourself the agony of gallstones and research other diets; I have had much better success with Jorge Cruise's diet plan, but I imagine there are other good ones, too.

3 out of 5 stars Might work for some people, but didn't work for me.......2007-06-30

I bought this book when it first came out, and followed the diet faithfully for three months. I was already a vegetarian, so following this diet wasn't as hard for me as it is for many people. I ate vegetables, fruit, beans, grains -- and essentially nothing else -- for three months. I even avoided things like soybeans and oats, because they have more fat than other beans and grains.

The problem is, this diet didn't work for me. I lost only a few pounds, despite the extremely restrictive eating plan. Worse, I developed problems with high blood sugar. And, if that wasn't bad enough, my cholesterol actually went UP a little (from 210 mg total cholesterol to 215 mg), despite following the strictly vegan, low-fat diet that Dr. Ornish claims will reverse heart disease.

In my case, I have long-standing problems with insulin resistance. At the time this book was first released, low-fat diets were being recommended even for people with diabetes and insulin resistance, but there is now increasing awareness that such diets have too many carbs for people who don't have a normal insulin response. My body just couldn't handle all the carbs on this diet. The Ornish diet may work for some people, but it didn't work for me -- I'm still looking for the right diet for me.

5 out of 5 stars Great diet. .......2006-04-11

Wonderfully healthful diet, and with a little exercise (my wife and I walked for about 25 minutes, three times a week) you'll lose like crazy. We added fish to the diet (not fried) and still did really well. One thing: the recipes in the book are a little tough. We recommend his everyday recipe book to solve the problem.

3 out of 5 stars Eat More, Weigh Less: Dr. Dean Ornish's Program for Losing Weight Safely While Eating Abundantly.......2006-03-18

I'm familiar with Dr. Ornish's other books. This one did not come up to standard.
Very disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars Finally some common sense.......2006-02-25

Some of the reviews I read before I bought this would make you think Mr. Ornish is a Nazi. In a society where we are looking for a pill to cure everything instead of using a little self discipline I suppose you could think that. This book is a simple straight forward approach to eating the way nature designed us instead of the way fast food has trained us. If you're looking for a healthy life and maybe to drop some pounds too, and you are ready to be realistic about it, buy this book and his cookbook. The food is great and you won't miss the stuff you give up.

Portobello Mushrooms with Bubbling Pesto
PRO/FATS AND VEGGIES -- LEVEL ONE

Serves 4
These mushrooms make a great appetizer or a delicious accompaniment for a summer meal alongside a steak. They work especially well if you are using your outdoor grill, but you can also broil them in the oven.

4 large portobello mushrooms
Olive oil for brushing
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 recipe Basil Pesto (p. 155)
4 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Trim the stems off the mushrooms. Brush mushrooms with olive oil and season lightly. Cook gill side down over medium coals or in the broiler for 5 minutes.

Turn the mushrooms over and spread a spoonful of pesto over the entire surface. Continue to cook for 10 minutes or until the mushrooms are very tender and the pesto is bubbling. Sprinkle the Parmesan on top of the pesto and return to broiler until cheese is melted and golden.

Dawn's Deviled Eggs
PRO/FATS AND VEGGIES -- LEVEL ONE

Makes 10
My good friend Barry Manilow has a wonderful cook named Dawn. These are her delicious deviled eggs. Her original recipe includes avocado, which makes the filling green. Try it that way for Level Two.

5 hard-boiled eggs, halved lengthwise
1 tablespoon minced scallion, white and light green parts
1 large jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced
Juice from 1 lime
1 tablespoon mayonnaise
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste
red chili flakes for garnish

Remove the yolks from the whites. Set the whites aside. Mash the yolks in a bowl with a fork. Add the scallion, jalapeño, lime juice, mayonnaise, and salt. Add more mayonnaise to reach desired consistency. Mash with a fork until blended. Using a teaspoon, carefully stuff whites with yolk mixture, mounding the tops.
For extra heat, garnish with red chili flakes.
For Level Two
Add 1 whole mashed avocado to the egg yolk mixture.

5 out of 5 stars Suzanne Somer's Eat, Cheat and Melt the Fat Away.......2007-08-17

I will never look at a diet or food the same again!

Suzanne's book has been a huge Eye-Opener on educating me of the way in which we eat and how our body's respond. No wonder many are overweight. They just lack the Education.

Many Thanks to Suzanne, I can't wait to read her other books to learn more!

5 out of 5 stars Enlightened.......2007-02-03

Suzanne presents her ideas very clearly and her writing style is very easy to understand. There are some great recipes in this book and I will use it again and again!

5 out of 5 stars challange.......2006-08-11

This diet is a challange, you have to remember what you can and can not eat together. However, once you figure it out, it is a good diet. You never feel deprived, and are never hungry. The food is good and it is great to not have to count calories.
I have lost 10lbs in less than two weeks. One more thing, you do not have to give up desserts.

1 out of 5 stars ...A bit fiddly in my opinion..........2006-07-27

Well, my wife and I tried this diet plan, and lost a little, BUT...
CON: some of the ingredients and just a marketing ploy.
CON: It makes no mention of what to do if you're lactose intolerant.
CON: How do you thicken a sauce without cornstarch? Arrowroot? Pretty hard to locate in most grocery stores. File Gumbo? Makes a green gloppy mess out of your meal.
CON: Somewhat poorly written, more poorly compiled into a book, and the person or persons in charge of the index need to be educated (back to school with you now!) in compiling a COMPREHENSIVE index. Facts and figures are just too hard to find in this book.
PRO: SHe's probably rich from sales of this re-hash of Atkins, Sugar-busters, and Carb Addicts.
PRO: She's easier on the eyes than Atkins was!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ONE TO ADD TO COLLECTION.......2005-08-17

I love this one, I have ordered almost all her books and this is a great read dont miss it. For all you doubters. I am convinced Suzanne and her people know what they are talking about!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Eat Fat Look Thin: Natural Way to Weight Loss.......2007-08-06

Very informative book that shatters myth that saturated fat coconut oil is bad for your health: in fact, it's about the best oil/fat you can eat to improve your health. Includes some easy but very tasty recipes too. Would recommend to anyone interested in exploring better nutrition, in addition to those interested in weight loss.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars is all they'd let me give, it needs more! .......2007-07-14

This book is totally awesome to say the least. I've been a bonified "health nut" for years, but this book gives you a lot of the information that I've took hours to research and read all in one book! So I recommend it to everyone that is concerned about their health and wanting to have some correct, and good knowledge to go on. It is not only about weight loss, it encompasses good fats, bad fats, why fat helps you lose weight, boosting your metabolism many other ways, and all the benefits of healthy eating. It really is a Healthy Lifestyle Plan as Bruce stated! I have used coconut oil for years now, (and read his book in about as long ago but seen I could write a review here today!) and it is truly a wonderful addition to anyone's diet. Not only do I use it in the kitchen, my husband and I use it in the bedroom--since it is anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-parisitacal it works great for having a balanced "flora and fauna" in that area. And it makes a superb hair conditioner as well, gets rid of dandruff too (which is fungal). There are just so many uses for it...

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Read.......2006-07-24

I totally agree with Master Hahn's review, especially the slant that Fife has for animals fats. It certainly does come out. Certainly a worthwhile purchase. As always, bear in mind that we need to read a lot of books in the low-carb world to truly get a well rounded view of the subject. This books fits in well with all the others.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Wake Up Call!!.......2006-03-21

"Eat Fat, Look Thin" by Dr. Bruce Fife is an excellent book that explains exactly why you don't want to consume polyunsaturated oils like soy, canola, cottonseed, corn, and why you are risking your health if you do. Dr. Fife also explains the dangers of eating any soy that is not fermented. The book also explains the benefits of coconut and coconut oil and other healthy fats that your system needs to function properly.

After reading the book I dumped out all of my junk food and processed foods and started taking virgin coconut oil and eating only natural whole foods (mostly organic). Both my husband and I are losing weight and feel so much better!

This book is for anyone that is seriously interested in their health! Dr. Fife's book is based on the research of Dr. Weston A. Price (see www.westonaprice.org). I first checked it out from the library and read it. It was so good that I wanted my own copy for reference.

4 out of 5 stars Really Good Book - But Not Quite Great.......2005-09-04

While hyped as a "Coconut Diet Book", this book actually "wanders" into several dietary areas. A lot of the information was VG and backed by continued research. And while there was a general emphasis on a low-carb approach, at times it seemed that approach came closer to a "moderate carb" recommendation.

On the positive side, the authors addressed the strong advantages of incorporating coconut oil into the diet . I especially found fascinating their discussion about the WTS (Wilson Thyroid Symptom) and the situation of T3 not being converted in tissue leading to a hypothyroid type condition (even though T3 levels in the blood could still be registering as normal!). While supplementation of T3 medication could be an obvious answer to medical types, the authors' recommendation of use of coconut oil to raise the body's temperature - and thereby enhance the enzyme that processes T3 more fully into body tissue - was a very interesting concept that bears further consideration.

I was disappointed in one regard in that the book emphasizes the advantages of coconut oil's saturated fats while downplaying the equal advantages of saturated fats from animal sources (ignoring for example that the native Okinawan diet emphasizes the use of lard quite extensively). I realize that the book was designed to emphasize the advantages of coconut oil, but seeing as how it drifted into so many other areas, it was still a point that could have been more easily addressed. (In fact there were times when a reader could almost discern a definite slant against animal origin saturated fats.)
[...]
There was one other area where I was disappointed with the position of the authors, and that was directed at their obvious bias against commercial milk. I would be the very first to loudly proclaim that raw milk (obtained under sanitary conditions) is by far a much healthier product that commercial milk. The authors however declare commercial milk to be basically a "death product" (making the chart of "FrankenFoods") by citing concerns with pasteurization and homogenization.

Yes, pasteurization does kill off the enzymes in milk - but then every time one cooks their vegetables (or meats, grains, etc.) they very likely generate more heat than that generated in the pasteurization process... and thereby kill off the enzymes contained by that food. One needs to stop and consider that while a food products enzymes can be important, the more important enzymes are the one's located in the human body naturally. I find it interesting that pasteurization (a low heat process) is evil as it kills the milk enzymes and yet when the authors discuss "Dietary Goitrogens" that they recommend, quite properly, the cooking of cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, etc.) and even bean sprouts as the cooking process (a high heat process) inactivates the goitrogens that can create thyroid problems. Oh yeah, and the cooking also kills the enzymes in the cruciferous vegetables and bean sprouts. Milk enzymes are apparently supremely important and yet the enzymes of cruciferous vegetables and bean sprouts apparently are not.

As to homogenization, the authors cite the theory addressed by a Dr. Kurt Oster, citing that homogenization causes an enzyme called xanthine oxidase to become trapped within tiny fat globules in the homogenized milk and that as a result the XO eventually passes through intact into the bloodstream where it acts as a free radical attacking the arterial wall. This simply is pure bunk.

The authors cite the Weston A. Price Foundation as their first listed "Most Useful Web Sites". Dr. Mary A. Enig is the Vice President of that organization and has this to say about Dr. Oster's theory:

"According to Oster, XO that remains in pasteurized, unhomogenized milk is found on the exterior of the membrane of the milk fat globules, where it is broken down during digestion. XO in raw milk is similarly digested. Oster postulated that because homogenization reduces the fat globules to a fraction of their original size, the XO is encapsulated by the new outer membranes of the smaller fat globules which form during the homogenization process. He believed that this new membrane protected the XO from digestive enzymes, allowing some XO to pass intact within the fat globules from the gut into the circulatory system when homogenized milk is consumed... A fundamental flaw in Oster's theory involves the difference between a fat globule and a liposome. Fat globules basically contain triglycerides and cholesterol encapsulated in a lipid bilayer membrane composed of proteins, cholesterol, phospholipids and fatty acids. They occur naturally in milk in a wide range of sizes. The fat globules in unhomogenized bovine milk are both very small and very large, ranging in size from 1000 nanometers to 10,000 nanometers. After homogenization, the average globule size is about 500 nanometers with a range from 200 nanometers to 2000 nanometers. Oster considered homogenization of cow's milk to be a 'procedure which foists unnaturally small particles on our digestive tracts.' Yet sheep's milk fat globules are reported to be 'very small. . . [and consequently]. . . easier to digest' and in fact globules from this milk are described as 'naturally homogenized'. The milk fat globule membrane from sheep's milk does not separate and butter cannot be made from such milk even though there is twice as much fat in sheep's milk as in cow's milk. The fat globules from goat's milk are similarly small. Once again, goat's milk is considered easier to digest than cow's milk for this reason. So there is nothing unnatural about small milk fat globules. Fat globules of all sizes are broken down during digestion, releasing the hundreds of thousands of triglycerides as well as any enzymes they contain. (Milk fat globules actually contain more than seven enzymes, of which XO is one - the other major ones are NADH2, iodonitrotetrazolium, 5-nucleotidase, alkaline phosphatase, phosphodiesterase and gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase.) These enzymes are broken down into individual amino acids (enzymes are specialized proteins) and the triglycerides are broken down into individual fatty acids and monoglycerides. Although Oster described these small milk fat globules in homogenized milk as liposomes, several researchers have pointed out that liposomes are very different in basic composition. Liposomes are typically 200 nanometers or less in size and do not contain complex protein components. Liposomes do not occur in nature but were developed by scientists as a way of delivering components such as drugs to the cells in the body."

Interestingly the authors of this book highly recommend goat's milk.

To further cite Dr. Enig (who is also the author of "Know Your Fats: The Complete Primer for Understanding the Nutrition of Fats, Oils, and Cholesterol"):

"A team led by A. J. Clifford looked carefully at Oster's theories. In a study published in 1983, they noted that 'neither liposome formation during homogenization of milk nor absorption of intact liposomes from the gastrointestinal tract has been demonstrated.' In reviewing the major published findings, Clifford reported that 'absorption of dietary xanthine oxidase has not been demonstrated.' Clifford's team cites studies showing lack of activity of serum xanthine oxidase from pigs and humans fed diets that included milk or were without milk. Further, Clifford's team noted that 'a relationship between intake of homogenized `dairy foods' and levels of xanthine oxidase activity in the blood has not been established.' There was even one study which showed an increase in serum xanthine oxidase when corn oil was fed, whereas milk and cream showed no such increase."
[...]
I believe that incorporating inaccurate portrayals that "may" have been the result of personal beliefs (for example inferring problems with other helpful fats and foods), the authors actually may have diluted to some extent the more positive messages that were being sent.

Overall would have to say that I agreed with 90% of the book.

With over 939,000 copies in print, used and recommended by more than 5,500 hospitals, and now completely revised and updated, Don't Eat Your Heart Out Cookbook is the bible for anyone seeking a heart-healthy diet.

Incorporating the latest scientific and nutritional studies, lay expert Joe Piscatella outlines an effective plan for life-long heart health and explains the science behind it in plain-speaking language we all can understand.

The author provides countless tips on adapting everyday recipes, ordering judiciously in restaurants, decreasing salt and sugar intake, losing weight and keeping it off. The new edition pays special attention to women and heart disease, explains HDL and LDL cholesterol and what the numbers really mean, and discusses coronary regression, the benefits of aspirin, and lifestyle factors vs. genetics. It dispels food myths--that shrimp is a no-no, alcohol is always unhealthy, and ground turkey is better than ground beef--and shows how to make use of low-fat food products. <

5 out of 5 stars a life saver.......2007-09-29

my mother recieved a copy of this book when she had her open heart surgery. i have read it and have been hooked on it ever since. when i lost my mother my sister got rid of the book before i could get to it. i was extremely glad i found it on amazon, com after my own heart attack. it is a lifesaver.

5 out of 5 stars good food for the heart patient.......2003-10-30

In this cookbook designed for the heart patient, Piscatella devotes the first half to discussion of heart disease, cholesterol, unhealthy elements of American diet, and a seven-step plan to change eating habits - including reductions of fat, salt, sugar and even restaurant eating.

The second half introduces the recipes, accompanied by nutritional information, variations and serving suggestions. Recipes range from Italian vegetable soup to grilled swordfish steak, chicken curry and barbecued lamb roast. There's even a pie crust recipe. With an emphasis on herbs and judicious use of small amounts of fat, recipes are attractive as well as healthy.

5 out of 5 stars You can live with this!.......2001-09-07

I started using this book for my husband. He as a combination of bad genetics and scant will-power. The dishes are very easy to make, most of the ingredients are already in your kitchen, and best of all, they are delicious. It is very easy to follow and you can't believe you are eating so healthy because it tastes so good.

5 out of 5 stars New to Heart Healthy information? This is your book!.......2001-03-19

After my father had an emergency triple-by-pass, our entire family experienced a "wake-up call" and finally decided to start learning about our hearts and how to eat for better heart health. One by one, each of us has bought a copy of this book--it is SO well written and Mr. Piscatella explains everything so well that it makes you excited about eating healthier. He is also very realistic about what it takes to change habits you've developed over many years. The first half of the book is all of the background information you need and the second half is the cookbook portion. The recipes are a helpful way to get started in your new appraoch to cooking and eating! Do yourself a favor and get this book--and get one for others in your life who need to take better care of their heart!

5 out of 5 stars Get it, Read it, Live it!.......2000-09-01

I just bought this book for my husband and me, and I can't put it down. The information in the first half of the book is priceless. It goes in-depth about not only the workings of the heart and the causes of coronary heart disease, but also contains a step-by-step guide for how to change your lifestyle to prevent, control, or even reverse heart disease. The recipes in the second half are delicious and practical, if somewhat pricey. The author's focus is on presenting a practical, "do-able" approach to health, and he certainly achieves that. If you aren't buying it for yourself, buy it for your kids... their future dietary habits are determined by how they eat today. And "traces of the disease are common in American children by age 10" (p. 25). I'm buying another one for a friend.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to get started and flexible .......2007-04-10

I like this book because the plans have the recipes, the preparation guides, and the shopping lists. The weekly plans are great for beginners and can be combined for those with more experience.

5 out of 5 stars LOVED IT.......2006-12-01

I have three of these books, this one, the one from 30 day gourmet, and the Don't Panic book. This was by far the best. It's the only one that divides the recipes into sessions, giving you a grocery list at the beginning of each section of what you'll need for all 5 recipes (though you could very easily just pick one to make, but this layout gives you the option of making several at one time.) The other two are just a compilation of freezer friendly recipes. There is a great variety of recipes, and they all look wonderful. I can't wait to try them! It is written in an easy-to-understand way, and the recipes aren't too complicated either. I am very happy with this book!!!

5 out of 5 stars Meals to Freeze and Reheat.......2006-05-23

"A mini-session consists of choosing one main ingredient, such as chicken, and then preparing a group of chicken recipes in a single afternoon or evening. A mini-session usually involves only an hour or two of cooking rather than the eight to ten hours often required for a complete month of cooking." ~Deborah Taylor Hough

Deborah Taylor Hough has a talent for not only saving money (she saved $24,000) in five years, she knows how to cook once a week and then enjoy meals every night with her family. In this book she shares her secrets and tips and has divided the book into Mini-Sessions which include a shopping list, preparation instructions and recipes. So, for the Vegetarian Mini-Session you could make Vegetable Fried Rice, Ricotta & Broccoli Pie, Cheese and Vegetable Quesadillas and Three Cheese Lasagna. There are plenty of recipes for Tofu, Beans and Eggplant. The rest of the book is made up of pasta, tuna, crab, pork, beef, turkey and chicken. There seems to be something for everyone in this cookbook.

By using the ideas in this book, you can find ways to save money. Like if you find a sale on chicken, you can save money on the Chicken Mini-Session meals. Some of the recipes in this book include:

Marinated Lime Chicken
Mushroom Chicken Couscous
Sloppy Turkey Joes
Braised Beef
Pork Rice Skillet Bake
Crab Strata
Cool Lime Burritos
Eggplant Bake

While the chapters are designed for making more than one recipe at a time, each recipe can also be used to just make one meal to serve six people.

~The Rebecca Review

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not for everyone.......2006-04-07

I picked up a copy of this book at the library because I wanted to see if I could save time and money by making meals in bulk. Being a vegan, I eat a lot of stirfrys, beans, lentils, soups and stews and I thought it would be easy to substitute some ingredients for the non-vegan ones. Unfortunately, this was not the case. The book suggested that you can make the recipes vegetarian by using TVP or tofu but it just doesn't work. So if you're not a vegetarian/vegan this book would be perfect for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great condition. Arrived quickly........2006-01-29

I had no trouble with this transaction. The book arrived in new condition ahead of scheduled arrival time. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars THIS VERSION IS JUST AS GOOD AS THE FIRST.......2006-12-15

Although there are many repeats from the first book, and although the first book is fabulous, this version is more precise in some ways. For example, instead of just giving the recipe for pizza dough like the first version, this version also includes the cooking time and temperature requirements...a very important addition!

3 out of 5 stars Too Many Repeats, But a Good Substitute for the Original........2003-07-01

Dom DeLouise's first cookbook -- Eat This, It Will Make You Feel Better -- was a huge hit in my Italian family. Each of the women in the family owned a copy, and it is the one cookbook I absolutely HAD to have when I moved out on my own. There are a ton of great, easy and relatively healthy recipes in the first, along with several very funny anecdotes and tons of photos. The first book is still, hands down, my favorite cookbook.

Unfortunately, Mr. DeLouise's second cookbook is not as great as the first. For one thing, several of the recipies from the first book are reproduced here, sometimes with slight differences, and sometimes exactly the same as in the original, right down to the photos and anecdotes that accompany them. As much as I love dishes such as Lucy's Pasta and Escarole and Beans, I did not need to buy the recipes twice. Moreover, where the anecdotes in the first book were entertaining tales of the people Mr. DeLouise loves to cook with, followed by favorite recipies from that person, the anecdotes in the second book often have nothing to do with the recipes. The tributes to Barbra Streisand [sp?] and Jason Priestly are particularly out of place.

Nevertheless, the second book, like the first, contains many wonderful recipes, most of which require a minimum of skill and virtually no "exotic" ingredients. The best thing about the recipies, to me, is that many are for dishes I grew up eating, but somehow never learned to make. The Eat This books are like having a grandma in the kitchen, showing you how to make traditional favorites.

Bottom line, If you have access to the original book, buy it and skip the sequel. If, however, you cannot find the original, than this book is a good substitute, particularly if you want good, basic, inexpensive, healthy and DELICIOUS meals.

4 out of 5 stars A very good cookbook........2001-05-23

This is a very good cookbook, but I think I like the first one better. "Eat This!" the original, was more practical and is one cookbook I have used more than any other I own. Dom does have quite a habit of hampering his cookbooks with more than a little name-dropping. (i.e. You hear of all the stars who have eaten his food, but you rarely find out what they liked about it.) But the two "Eat This!" books are well worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Almost As Good As The First One.......2001-01-30

This second "Eat This" book is nearly as good as the first: lots of great recipes, fun family stuff, etc. Here we have more bread recipes and finally some good pizza and calzone recipes. There does seem to be more emphasis on dead animal and in a misguided effort to keep fat calories down he uses margarine (a synthetic and dangerous substance that has the same amount of fat as butter, but increases cancer risk) instead of butter. With these few exceptions, I can recommend this book with nearly as much enthusiasm as the first one.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Cookbook for Everyone.......2000-07-18

Dom DeLuise has some great recipes and some good hints for all cooks--even novices. His recipes are tasty and not too difficult to make. I learned how to make my first omelet from reading his book. Because I do not like adding oil to any recipe, I was happy to see that he noted that applesauce could be substituted for oil in the Zucchini Bread recipe. He has dozens of great recipes for everything from breads to pastas to desserts. I have had this book since it was first published and I can tell you that it is well worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Diabetes Snacks and more.......2007-08-10

If you already know how to cook you may not be interested in this book. If you are newly diagnosed w/diabetes or have a diabetic child this is a good "first" cookbook that is easy to follow and has a good variety of recipes for beginning cooks and children that are interested in preparing food.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of great information.......2007-03-08

I bought this book for my sister. She loves it. It has helped her control her diabetes through diet.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to make snacks for diabetics.......2004-05-05

This is the easiest cookbook I've ever used. The recipes are delicious. It's so hard to find diabetic versions of the snacks and treats I love to munch on, and here they are! Great for kids to eat after school, or for late night treats.
