Hannah is a young woman, thirteen years old and a fairly normal sounding teenager. She has no true understanding of her family's culture, or of the memories that are in her blood, ones shares and must not forget. Hannah is reborn into Chaya, as she is taken from a normal, rural life in 1942, into one of the Nazi death camps. We watch as the daily struggles for life transform this teenagers understanding of her world, what it has become and what it was. The glimpses of her true time period, the 1980's, are seen as madness in the camps, but she speaks truth. And she remembers the most important gift of all. Chaya gives up her life for Hannah's ancestor, Rivka, so she may escape to live her life. I enjoyed the family future and past connections; it made the book at that more personal since the readers become so close to her extended family, all in both versions of time. The deep emotions this book brings to the surface would take a careful working, well versed teacher. But this book is told in a way that is an accurate, as well as age appropriate way of explaining, in first person, some of the atrocities that humans can do to one another. On page 163, where Hannah is back in her own time and explains to Aunt Eva what the numbers on her arm mean, I almost started crying. What a powerful way to end the book. "J18202. J is for Jew. And 1 because you were alone, alone of the 8 who had been in your family, though 2 was the actual number of them alive..."

This was a good book, but it wasn't as informative as I had hoped it would be.

I read this in 7th grade some years ago and I couldn't help but cry in class and hope in the future this doesn't happen again. At that time, I knew about the holocaust pretty well and seeing a movie called Paperclips the previous year I say I knew enough, but this book showed it in a simpler way. It was in a view of a girl around my age then or so and it was so very emotional and powerful. This is a great book to read or lend to a friend to show them a part of a history. You learn that Jews are people aswell like any others and they can be a spanish jew, english jew, american jew and so on. It isn't an ethnic/race, it's a religion. Killing Jews then is like killing Catholics right now or any other religion. Jews did nothing wrong, but even today I know some people that hate them, but for no reason, only because they were taught to or what their family believed. After I lended this book to some friends, they understood more.

Overall, this is a great book, which can not only be enjoyed by teenagers, preteens and such, but for adults aswell. You understand it more than by just reading history books, this gives you a story to go along with it and it stays in your mind and doesn't go away like when you study for a one time exam and it is no use to you after you ace the test. This is a really must read.

"The devil's arithmetic," that was what Gitl called it. Everyday, more and more Zungangi arrive at the camps. Everyday more Jews are chosen. The more in the camps the less in the world. Adding and subtracting. The children think the work is hard, but the Jews hated it because they subtracted lives and added Jews to the horror.
It all started when Hannah, a young Jewish girl, resented going to her family's traditions. She symbolically opened the door to the prophet Elijah after she drank too much wine at her family's Passover Seder. She is transported back in time to 1942, just before the Holocaust. The Nazis came and took the Jews away. Hannah tried to warn people about the concentration camps but nobody believed her. Hannah learned why all of her relatives were so upset about the numbers on their left arms.
The Devil's Arithmetic, by Jane Yolen, was very descriptive and touching, especially when Chaya makes a sacrifice -a big one- for family, friends, and religion. This was a fabulous insight on what really happened in the Holocaust. This book made you feel like you were really in the concentration camps and you could almost hear the harsh voices and smell the horrible smells of blood and sweat.
We highly recommend this book for readers of all ages. It gives you a whole other opinion on the Holocaust and lets you really know how horrible it was and how many people died long, slow, painful deaths. It makes you cry, laugh, smile, and opens up a whole new point of view.

It's during the second World War, before this Hannah lives in New Rochelle with her father, mother, and little brother. But after that fateful night, when she was hurled into the past she became different. People keep confusing her with someone else, a girl named Chaya. They talk about her parents, dead from Cholera and a place called Lublin. But her parents are fine aren't they? At a wedding,Hannah, the bride, groom, and everyone else are captured by the Nazi's and taken to concentration camps. Once there, Hannah doesn't know past from present. In this book Hannah goes from being selfish to fighting for the Jews, being strong although people have lost all hope, and being brave even though she knows only fate lie ahead. Jane Yolen brings the past into the present with this dynamic book that draws you into the setting. It makes you want to cry, and in the end sigh with relief. This book tells you to never give up and to be grateful for what you have. It is a lesson on how cruel people can really be.
Everyone will enjoy this captivating book about survival. I would recommend this book to kids age 11 and up. People who enjoy history and survival books will appreciate this astounding story about the Holocaust by the wonderful author Jane Yolen.

Great Read.......2007-05-31

This was my first book by Andrea Kane, and I'm looking forward to reading more. I found the story to be very suspenseful. I never saw the culprit's identity coming, which is always a great thing in a suspense book.

I didn't care for how fast the relationship between Devon and Blake progressed, particularly with everything hanging over them. I thought the author should've slowed that whole thing down a bit, although I realize she only had a certain amount of time and pages to bring the relationship together. But, it just didn't come across as realistic or believable, in light of how close Blake was with his family, that he was so quick to switch sides.

I also couldn't stand the character of Monty. I found him to be arrogant, obnoxious and condescending, particularly to his children. He came across like he thought he was in charge of the whole world, barking orders to cops, other detective, his kids and ex-wife, and even his employers, the Piersons.

I look forward to more books by Andrea Kane.

This is a great book and for those who like to try and figure out who did it you can guess until almost the very end, with little clues here and there, if you get them. I thought it was written well and am looking forward to reading another book of hers.

I'm not going to write a plot summary since so many others on Amazon have already did it. I really enjoyed this book. I didn't know anything about show horses or competition jumping/riding. I like the idea of getting a wealthy family together and throwing in some mystery. I enjoyed how the main characters interacted and felt like you got a good picture of them. I've never read anything by Andrea Kane but I believe I will pick up some more of her romantic mysteries. I didn't like how the ending wrapped up in like 20 pages. I felt it left some things unexplained and wanted to find a happy ending for all the characters but other than that I would recommend this book to the romantic mystery readers out there.

Moving Towards The Mainstream!.......2006-10-04

Sally Montgomery accompanies Fredrick Pierson on a weekend getaway that turns horribly wrong and Fredrick ends up dead, and Sally is left for dead. She runs into the woods and manages to contact her ex-husband and begs him to help her. She has no idea who killed Pierson but she's scared.

Devon is Sally's daughter and when she finds out about the attempt on her mother's life she reluctantly agrees to help her PI father with the investigation. She's a vet not a cop but she wants to bring her mother out of hiding so this looks to be the best choice. She will manage to worm her way into the Pierson family using their combined grief as a vehicle. What she ends up finding is she is drawn to the handsome Blake Pierson but he seems to have secrets and an agenda. Did he have something to do with his uncle's murder? Or does he know who is responsible. Has she fallen in love with the enemy or has she become the target of a killer?

Ms. Kane has penned a strong suspense who-dun nit read with a colorful cast of prospective suspects. I have been a long time fan of Ms. Kane's dating back to her wonderful historicals. She is a very adept storyteller who seems to be making the crossover to mainstream. Still she manages to include the romantic elements in her latest effort that her long time fans will hunger for. Ms. Kane is a must read if you are a fan of the suspense novel.

Pretty good plotting; light on suspense.......2006-02-01

A heated conversation in a barn between the new man in her life and his father does not really register with Sally Montgomery, but she agrees to accompany wealthy widower Franklin Pierson to a mountain retreat. But when she returns from a walk, she finds Franklin dead, and is knocked out by the assailant, who sets fire to the house and flees.

Now Sally has gone into hiding fearing for her life, and calls on her ex-husband Pete, a former NYPD detective to help her. Hired by the Pierson family to protect his family, Pete gets veterinarian daughter Devon to reluctantly join him in the investigation into the wealthy Pierson family that leads to corruption, drugs, genetics research, and murder.

Sally manages to capture the attention of both prodigal grandsons, who vie for her attention. Though she finds Olympic equestrian hopeful James attractive, it is Blake that sets her pulse running. While James is traveling, she and Blake get more involved, as they work on opposite sides of the investigation.

While not as strong (in terms of plotting and suspense) as some of her previous novels, including the excellent "I'll be Watching You," author Kane captures the reader's attention and manages to do something that few authors can do - surprise us with the revelation of the killer.

This was a great summer read. The wonderful descriptions of the Pacific Northwest had me going online to research my dream vacation! If magical, serene, outdoorsy settings are important to you, this is the book for you! I especially enjoyed the stories by Jill Barnett and Susan Wiggs.

Great Book!.......2001-01-20

This book includes three stories all revolving around one location, San Juan Islands in Washington State. One author started the stories by setting the scene, then two other authors continued with Debbie Macomber's story in the middle. I have enjoyed much of Macomber's work, so I selected this novel to a quick summer read. I truely enjoyed the combinations of the three authors, and all three stories were enchanting.

Skip the Summer Place.......2000-08-17

This review is for the Audio version. I would not recommend this tape to anyone! The narrarators are soooo dramatic - for instance in the first story ( I can't even remember the title, it was so bad) the person reading the story emphasises every last word of the sentence, whispers and has to take a breath every few words. It is very annoying. I couldn't listen to any more than 20 minutes of the story - that's how bad she got on my nerves. The second story was not much better - she should have skipped the accent and I was disapointed in the storyline - Susan Wiggs is usually much better.

Maybe reading the book instead of listening would make a difference. But I will never know because there is no way I would waste more money on these short stories.

Before Eudora Welty was a published writer, she was a semi-professional photographer. The "snapshots" (her term) in this book are eloquent images in themselves; Welty's accompanying essay, though brief, is excellent.

Fine journalism.......2000-04-16

In what appears to be, sadly, Bruce Stutz's only book, Stutz introduces the reader to those who scratch noble livings out of a river that yields not much more than a few shad each spring. He journeys south from Hancock, NY, to Philadelphia, PA, to present the lives of riparian denizens fighting to maintain their source of income against our (federal and state) government's struggles to protect our beautiful, valuable, and fragile Delaware River Valley. Neither side in Stutz's book comes across as "right" or "wrong" because, well, both sides care deeply about this stunning river. The one lack in "Natural Lives, Modern Times" is the lack of photos or illustrations, beyond some attractive woodcuts heading each chapter.

24/7 Cocktail Time to Avert the Third World War.......2005-08-01

Wodehouse has created another set of hilarious, self-absorbed, but well-meaning, and typically British characters here. Who needs Jeeves and never mind those stupid pro-Nazi Wodehouse ramblings, this is the real thing. Every page has some serious laugh out loud stuff to it.

First Lord Ickenham initiates some serious soul-searching and literary output from a former class-mate, Beefy Bastable, by slyly knocking his hat off his head as he looks for a taxi. Then to make it even more fun, he encourages poor Beefy in this pursuit by assuring him that he is not capable of writing a novel. The over-worked barrister then pens a blockbuster about how the younger generation lacks discipline, vision, and morality. When bishops decry the racy bits from the pulpit, the novel becomes a success and Hollywoood comes calling for the movie rights.

Now Wodehouse really rolls up his sleeves. Ickenham intervenes in four on-again, off-again romances, putting them all right in the end. The paternity of Cocktail Time becomes a bit confused, as several claim the authorship (Bastable used a nom de plume as he did not want the outcry over the novel to affect his goal of standing for Parliament as a Conservative). Additional loopy characters such as Young Mr. Saxby and the elusive Flannery drop in.

Good light reading, take it to the beach and enjoy.

The Real Story behind the Story.......2004-11-05

Do you enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process? If so, Cocktail Time will soon become one of your favorite comic novels.

The book's premise is deliciously contrary -- if a friend says that you cannot write a novel, some people will feel bound to prove the friend wrong. The backdrop for that decision is uproariously bizarre. The friend, the fifth Earl of Ickenham, has been feeling his oats a bit too much at the Drones Club and decides to borrow a slingshot (catapult in the UK) to pop the top hat off his old friend, Sir Raymond (Beefy) Bastable, with a Brazil nut as Beefy left the neighboring Demosthenes Club. When Beefy tells Ickenham that he wants to find the miscreant who did the dastardly deed, Ickenham offhandedly comments that it's a pity that Beefy is not an author who could use the literary sword to put all such pranksters in their place. That sets the stage for Beefy's novel, Cocktail Time, which he writes under a nom de plume.

There's only one complication. Beefy wants to stand for Parliament and he has written a scandalous book that would ruin his political career.

As the book's sales begin to take off like a rocket ship, Beefy realizes he needs some cover. Ickenham suggests that Beefy find someone else to pretend to be the author. With that suggestion, an unimaginable series of events follows . . . each more humorous than the last.

Will Beefy keep his honor? Will someone else keep his royalty checks? Will love conquer all?

The plot is one of the most complex ones that I have ever read in a comic novel, and the ever-shifting action works well. You'll have great fun with Cocktail Time. I don't remember a P.G. Wodehouse book that I have enjoyed more than this one.

P.G. Wodehouse made a legendary name for himself by writing dozens of humorous novels. In "Cocktail Time," Wodehouse turns his considerable wit toward politicians, scandalous novels, and of course, the carefree twentysomethings of the British upper-class.

Lord Ickenham (also known as Uncle Fred) gets a little "loopy" when he comes to the city. So when he's at his nephew's favorite hangout, the Drones Club, he fires a brazil nut across the street at a stuffy relative of his, Beefy Bastable. Bastable is not exactly a nice person, and so to retaliate against the young idiot he thinks has attacked him, he writes a scathing, scandalous novel called "Cocktail Time," denouncing modern youth.

Written under a non de plume, "Cocktail Time" gets denounced from the pulpits and is a huge hit. Bastable is terrified that the book will derail his political career, so he enlists his nephew Cosmo to pretend to have written the book. Since the royalties will let Cosmo pay off his debts, he's more than happy to oblige. There are only two problems: An American con artist (known as Oily) is homing in on Cosmo, and so is Hollywood...

If somebody could write songs about brazil nuts and banned books, this would make a GREAT musical. It's lighthearted enough, goofy enough, and complex enough. Wodehouse is in fine form here, writing the lovable characters that fit into the molds we love so much -- stressed young men, disapproving uncles and stolid butlers.

Wodehouse's writing is still fresh and funny -- he has a few awkward moments, such as describing a couple dancing the "rock'n'roll." Okay, what does that mean? But whatever decade his novel is set in, it has that pre-WW II flair. Not to mention deceptive formality -- at first glance, it looks very dry, but it's actually very goofy. ("Yo ho. In fact, I will go further. Yo frightfully ho.")

Lord Ickenham is a fun character, very smooth and debonair with a distinctly loopy personality. The impoverished Cosmo and his deeply stressed uncle Beefy Bastable are good variations on Wodehouse's classic characters, and he adds a twist by having the butler fall in love with his employer's sister (an unexpectedly sweet touch).

"Cocktail Time" is a funny novel about a nasty novel, and the resulting hijinks are fun for anyone to read. It's bumps-a-daisy as billy-o.

I highly recommend this book. It is very good and entertaining. It's very funny too. Any fan of P.G. Wodehouse's work will really enjoy it.

I see that my fellow reviewers of this tasty comic novel are willing to weigh in at only four of the possible five stars. I dissent vigorously and award the full five. Nothing less than five will do for a storyline so perfectly convoluted, language and syntax so recklessly heedless of anything real or centered. The characters are familiar Wodehouse types: quaintly erratic and utterly dependable for their supply of humor. Feydeau never plotted anything as neat and door-bangingly twisted, and the master Wodehouse provides page after page of crackpot ways to describe all of the door-slamming action.
