A Must Read for anyone just starting out!.......2006-08-02
This is a super book for anyone just starting out in pageants. This book has the basics of how to get started and lots of great tips. The best part is there are several pages of sample interview questions to practice with. I loved this book very easy to read.
Very Helpful!.......2005-07-09
Although this book seemed to steal a bit of material from others--like anecdotes from another pageant book I know--it was EXTREMELY detailed and helpful in getting prepared and realizing that IMAGE IS EVERYTHING in a pageant. Honestly, I can't see how I competed without buying this book first. This book practically gives the formula for success, even how to stand and walk in swimsuit! I can't wait for my next competition!
One of my favorites!.......2002-06-19
Anna Stanley's insight as a contestant, judge, and director makes her book an outstanding guide for contestants. Her coverage on each phase of competition has thoroughly prepared me for my state and national crown. The appendix of resources serves as an effective aid for contestants with their pre-pageant packing and research. "The Crowning Touch" is a valuable reference source for all pageant affiliates and would be a wonderful edition to your library.
One of the worst books I've read in a long time........2000-10-17
Although it includes a few helpful tips (such as the list of interview questions in the back), most of the information does not go beyond common sense. The frequent typos and poor writing give the impression that the author simply sat down and wrote the first thoughts that sprang to mind, without bothering to go back and polish her work.
A comprehensive manual for pageant hopefuls.......1999-07-15
The Crowning Touch is a comprehensive manual for beauty pageant entrants. Everything from acing the interviews to projecting an attractive image in a swimsuit is covered. A must-read for all interested in entering such competitions.

Get Out Your Highlighter.......2001-07-16
I got this book from the library to give me more information about beauty pagents, and I couldn't put it down! I started marking pages of useful information, and then I had to get my own so I could make notes to myself. It is the most helpful book written so far, by a woman who used to be a Miss America judge and knows exactly what they are looking for, and how to get it.
it was a very informative book, and has helped in pagents........1998-11-18
This book has helped me to win and be sucsseful in many pagents. I really enjoyed it and think it could help others do the same!
A necesity for the beginner and veteran pageant competitor!.......1998-05-09
It is all too easy to jump into pageant competition without learning what it takes to prepare. Secrets of Interview, Swimsuit, Talent and Evening Gown portions of competition are beautifully highlighted in this book to help contestants avoid mistakes. The importance of paperwork is not ignored either. If you're thinking about competing, I would definitely recommend reading this book from cover to cover at least once! If you've competed many times, this book is just as wonderful as it may point out things you never thought of as well as confirming that you are doing something right. In my opinion, this book is a must for the pageant competitor's library.
Book Description
In September 2004, the Miss America Pageant will celebrate its eighty-third birthday. Throughout its long history, the contest has been praised for its efforts to provide positive role models for young American women, targeted for protest (like the 1968 feminist demonstration featuring the coronation of a sheep), and endured several scandals, including Vanessa Williams's nude photos in Penthouse in 1984 and the conflict between the two rival Miss North Carolinas in 2002. Love it or hate it, the Miss America Pageant provides a fascinating glimpse into how stan-dards of American femininity have been defined, projected, main-tained, and challenged over time. In this first inter-disciplinary anthology to examine the Miss America Pageant, scholars defend, contest, and reflect on the contest from a range of different perspectives, grappling with a variety of themes, including beauty, race, the body, identity, and consumerism.

Insightful Scholarship regarding Miss America.......2006-02-27
Elwood Watson and Darcy Martin have compiled an interesting and insightful volume on the history and meaning of the Miss America Pagaent. Starting out with their compelling introductory essay, Watson and Martin offer fascinating detail and thoughtful analysis of this classic cultural event. The chapters in this study approach the topic from a wide range of perspectives, from the early days of the extravaganza to the crowning and decrowning of Vanessa Williams in the 1980s to the contoversies of the 21st century. The volume also includes a reprint of an excellent essay from well-known writer Gerald Early. Overall the book is a rewarding read which reminds us that any subject, when researched thoroughly and analyzed skillfully, can be "real" history.

Perfect Handbook for a Young Girl.......2007-08-20
Simply worded, short and concise, it's the perfect handbook for the "coming" out of a young girl, and a useful guideline for those just starting out in beauty pageants. If you're thinking about competing, I would definitely recommend reading this book from cover to cover at least once, if you are not, reading it will make a big difference in your life!
A superb guide to learning to make decisions that are personally right for a young girl in an ever changing world. .......2005-11-06
The book offers a young girl the information she will need to face the challenges of growing through her teen years to adulthood. She will be enabled to make choices that are right for her personally, and do so with confidence. My niece is going to use this book as a project for her Girl Scout Troop of twelve 13 year olds and follow it up with a "fashion show" for other Scout Troops and family. The book contains information young
girls can easily apply to their personal style and personality,
and be confident as they face whatever "Pageant" life puts before them to compete in....
Save Your Money!!.......2005-06-01
This book, only 81 pages long, could have mentioned a lot more to help a new contestant. A few of the examples are helpful, but Bordenkircher doesn't hint at any new or creative ideas towards winning a pageant. Most of the material is common sense and a lot of the important points are not elaborated on. It seems only unimportant things are gone into detail about. For example, the author tells a two page story on how a woman was too picky about her choosing gown. Who cares?! As a contestant, I can tell a lot of helpful hints were left out. Tips and secrets a "former judge" should be able to share; tips I would like to know, but no one seems to be telling! It almost angers me to know that people pay $12.95 for a thin book that has information one could obtain at a free pageant tip site! Next, while describing flattering necklines, waistlines and sleeves, the reader has no idea what these designs look like. It's like this book is an outline for a longer book! Why would I buy a book, only to find I must go online to find pictures of what was described in it? If it is an instructional piece, why can't all the instruction be contained in one spot?! It seems as if pageant officials and writers want to blur the truth about pageants. Why can't anyone simply share what practices win?! I recommend Becoming A Beauty Queen: The Complete Guide. It provides anecdotes, helpful tips on poise, winning and grooming tips any girl or lady would appreciate. Plus, it's much more detailed, well-written and visually appealing. How to Win Your Crown just isn't worth it.
Only Good For Beginers.......2005-01-21
This book has some good tips for people who are brand new to the pageant world. But, if you have already competed or at least have some knowledge about pageants, this book is not for you.
From a father's point of view.......2004-07-05
What a book! Guys like me -- a single dad raising two girls who fancy themselves beauty queens - aren't really equipped to tell our daughters about the finer points of being female, nevermind about being a contestant in a pageant. The girls read it and then told me I "had" to read it so I could "get it". Well, I read it, and I admit a lot of my fears about pageants were laid to rest, but more importantly even the girly stuff made sense to me. It's a good feeling to know I can help my girls along their way in pageanty without missing a beat - or missing out. I applaud this book for how helpful it is for any girl interested in creating a better self.

Book Description
Scottie-Anne's older sister is a "professional" participant in beauty contests, and after watching so many of them, Scottie-Anne's conclusion is that brains don't count much. She wants nothing to do with what she considers the shallow, egotistical world of pageants -- until her school holds one. Scottie-Anne is shocked to realize that she wants to win! After all, no one wants to be a runner-up.
The pageant isn't the only exciting event in Scottie-Anne's life. She's been chosen to participate in a Russian studies program on the weekends at Yale University. As preparations for the pageant continue, Scottie-Anne wonders why brains don't get the recognition that beauty gets. Can't you be a winner without being in the spotlight?

Beauty Pageant Battles.......2007-06-21
Scottie-Anne's older sister Dane has always been the superstar of the family. She was in her first beauty pageant when she was two years old, and she hasn't stopped since then. Now she is in high school and is practically famous in their town. Her parents and Scottie-Anne spend every weekend driving around in a custom-made van attending beauty pageants. Dane usually wins. Scottie-Anne isn't particularly beautiful; she is more likely to be an academic star than a beauty queen. Sometimes she wishes she had the attention Dane has, though.
Now Scottie-Anne's middle school has decided to hold a beauty pageant as a fund-raiser. Scottie-Anne's best friend Lillie really wants to enter the pageant, but her parents are against it because they think beauty pageants are degrading to girls. Finally her parents agree to let Lillie enter, under the condition that Scottie-Anne enters as well. They think it's a safe bet that Scottie-Anne wouldn't be caught dead in a beauty pageant.
With pressure from Lillie and pressure from Dane, who wants Lillie to enter and win to teach her parents a lesson, Scottie-Anne reluctantly enters the pageant. Soon, though, she finds that she is more invested in this thing than she thought. She is almost surprised to find that she really does want to win the pageant. As the event gets cloer and closer, though, she begins to simply hope she won't embarrass herself in front of so many people.
The characters in this story were really vivid and honestly portrayed. The author is good at capturing what it is like to be a teenager. I liked that beauty pageants weren't portrayed as evil in this book. Dane was somewhat obnoxious, but she was confident and articulate in defending pageants, which made her a good character.
A look at pageants from the outside looking in.......2006-06-19
This was the first of Cooney's books I read. I picked it up at the library one lazy summer afternoon. I was drawn. Scottie-Anne is a very relatable character. Used to living in her sister's shadow, she had grown to despise pageants after always watching her beauty queen sister, Dane, compete and always win. Her school is hosting a beauty pageant and all of her friends want to compete. Scottie-Anne initially thinks it's stupid and she doesn't want to participate. As the story progresses, she begins to want to compete. She wants Dane to look up at her. Scottie-Anne now wants attention. She wants the spotlight. The only question is...will she win?
OK Book but its not my taste .......2005-01-27
This book is about beauty pageants which was everything said. I didn't like the big idea of the book which was beauty counts and smarts does not mean anything. Which is not true! Scottie-Anne at first thinks beauty pageants are stupid and sees no point in them, then suddenly she is FORCED to enter one because of her best friends mom. Eventually Scotts suddenly wants to win out of no where. Scotts is asked at the end if she enjoyed the pageant and she says YES but there is no talk about her enjoying the pageant in the book! Again this book is more for people who are into modeling, pageants, and how YOU LOOK. This was not a good big idea to teach to girls at the age of ten like me therefore I found this book pointless. This book was also hard to do a book project on in school because of its big idea. The back of the book made it seem like it tought a good lesson which is that beauty doesn't matter its whats inside that counts. But the book said the exact oposite. This really let me down.

Twenty Pageants Later- reviewed by: Blondie.......2004-11-10
Twenty Pageants Later is a book about a girl named Scotti-Anne who's older sister, Dane, is a beauty queen. Dane has won alot of pageants and pretty much Scotti-Anne's whole life is in the back seat of her parent's van driving Dane to pageants all over the country. One day, Scotti-Anne's middle school has a pageant called Marsh Mid. Princess. She didn't want to be in it but her best friend's mom wouldn't let her be in the pageant if Scotti- Anne wasn't in the pageants also, so she entered. This story is about Scotti-Anne, who at first thought she wouldn't care if she won or lost, trying SO hard to win. I like this book because the author makes the characters in the book come alive. This is one of the very best books I have ever read.

Two Series, One Big Finish!.......1999-04-16
PAGEANT and TRASH come together in a totally cool way. Lisa Easton emerges as one of the freshest characters in recent memory. The Virus wreaks more havoc. Fun, fun, fun. If you want a serious book, read Cherie's LIFE IN THE FAT LANE or MBurgess'ss' SMACK. If yuou want a load of fun, read this one!
Two series end not with a bang, but a whimper.......1999-03-28
Cherie Bennett is known for her spicy plot lines and shocking story twists. However, she chooses to end two popular series - *Trash* and *Pageant* - in a happily-ever-after joint novel.
The loser-in-love of *Trash* finds his one-and-only; the vicious diva of the *Pageant* circuit finds her unrealistic, deviant plans collapsing all around; the other random shiny happy characters sail off into a sunsetting bliss.
It seems that Bennett copped out on both her series by coupling them in this story. Her overactive imagination runs wild, and ends in a stereotypically flowery style. She clearly wanted all the loose ends double-knotted and sealed off, leaving little hope for future stories. I was left disappointed. I mean, come on! I personally despised the way she gave everyone a promising future, since many of them didn't deserve it. And now that the two series are done, I am especially disappointed. I expected more of this best-selling author. I certainly didn't expect her to fade into the trap of happy endings and peace-love hippie-ness.
If you loved *Trash* and *Pageant*, skip this story. Your own writings will leave you more satisfied than the ones Bennett has printed.
Katie and Lisa are on tour!.......1999-01-22
We finally find out what happens to everyone from all the pageants. The Virus is furious and wants the crown back. Will she try to kill Katie? How far will she go? Pepper is finally starting to face the reality about her baby. What will she do? Christie is having qualms about exposing her friends to get a jump start on her journalism career. An interesting twist of events occurs in all the stories you've been following since book one. This was a great book because it tells what happens to all the characters. Cherie Bennet is an awesome writer. It would be totally cool if she continues the series with the next Miss Teen Spirit pageant. I couldn't put this book down!
Trash+ Pageant = A WINNER.......1999-01-15
This book combined two of my favorite book series. Not only do you get get the conclusion to Pageant, you also get the conclusion to the Trash cliffhanger that we've all been waiting for! Do Katie and Dean survive all their new problems? How do Lisha and Sky work things out now that her HIV test was positive? Will Christy write the expose article? What about Pepper and her pregnancy? What will the interns do about MY TRASHY SUMMER? You're in for a surprise. Not to mention that Lisa falls for a very sensitive guy that we all know. Plus, The Virus wants revenge! How far will she go to get it? This book was great. It threw in a lot of things that I never would've expected. I couldn't put it down! If you're a fan of either of these book series, email me and we can talk.
