4 out of 5 stars A Source Book for Bridge Players.......2007-09-19

Well organized and quite cnmplete, this is aa terrific "bible" to have by the bridge table. When we discuss how a hand was bid or played, this becames an invaluable aid.
Too complex for the beginner.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2007-08-06

I believe this book is one of the best bridge books I have ever looked into, and I have read or scanned many. My highest recommendation. I bought three.

5 out of 5 stars this book is a must have for all who play or are starting to play...........2007-03-05

I don't play bridge. My mother, who just turned 80, started playing a few weeks ago. She was studying these handouts that she got from the church's bridge club. I felt she needed a good reference book, with clear illustrations. English is not her first language, and I didn't want something too complicated and not easy to understand. Needless to say, she LOVES this book. Best gift I could have given her. People that have been playing a long time are quite impressed how fast she is learning the game and becoming an accomplished player in just a few weeks. If you're a beginner or advanced player, this book is a must have for your library. Or if you know someone who likes to play, this book will make a Great gift too!

5 out of 5 stars Nice Resource.......2006-12-17

The Bridge Player's Bible is a great reference source for the beginning to intermediate bridge player. The book is covers both bidding and the play of the hand. Hundreds of scenarios are covered, ranging from the most basic concepts like a preemptive three bid to more complicated concepts such as numerous types of squeeze plays.

The book is very readable. Each page has two or three subsections, complete with very colorful illustrations and examples. Not only will most players benefit from reading the book from cover to cover, but the bible will continue to be a resource to check on your play and learn how various situations should have been played.

Five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Learn strategies, rules, and approaches from key players' techniques and advice.......2006-12-12

If you're a bridge player you know just how many bridge books are on the market today - but THE BRIDGE PLAYER'S BIBLE offers something different: over 300 examples of how to bid, play, and defend on a range of hands. You can learn strategies, rules, and approaches from key players' techniques and advice, from signals and valuation to planning and deceptive card playing. And each technique receives full illustration for easy learning for novices, too.

With commentary from dozens of executive directors, presidents and board members from across the nation, 501(c)Blues offers a passionate insight into the dysfunction that plagues America's nonprofit organizations. These colorful tales from a unique insider's perspective will help your organization fulfill its mission while ensuring that everyone keeps a civil and courteous tongue — and their eyes on the prize.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for everyone helping non-profits.......2007-09-30

This is a great book for anybody helping with non-profits in any way, not just directors. Non-profits are providing a public service and ultimately we, the public, are at the top of the organizational chart, we're the boss as the author put it.

This isn't a how-to book as much as it is examples of how-not-to book. The commentaries, insights and stories of various projects establish the "blues" mindset, the reasons behind the problems, which you want to stay away from.

I'm a technology and business consultant so it makes perfect sense to treat non-profit organizations as for-profit businesses. In fact, the reason I purchased the book is for insight on how I can apply my business consulting skills to help non-profits. The ultimate goal is to realize a vision, whether you are trying to make a profit or not. Through the stories you can see how easy it is to create a detrimental mindset and culture that hinders the success of the non-profit.

Every non-profit organization should have this book in their library, and read it.

5 out of 5 stars Great read!.......2007-04-03

This book is one great read - it's heady, funny and exquisitely written. Mr. Jenkins is eloquent, clever and brutally honest. Even if you aren't in a position where you report to a board, this book is worth your time. Very insightful, very witty and most helpful... Thanks David, great book!

5 out of 5 stars Must Have for anyone in non-profit.......2003-10-25

This book accurately and cleverly captures both the great problems that exist in the world of non-profit management and the unbelieveably simple solutions to those problems. It also articulated clearly and humorously why those simple solutions are so elusive to those who volunteer to "lead" non-profits. This really is a MUST READ text for both the long suffering professionals who make their living guiding the companies that provide such essential services for our communities and those who agree to volunteer as trustees. This sacred trust demands much from each category of servant and Jenkins' book is an invaluable and easily read handbook for both. If you see yourself in his words and the quotes from his contributors then learn from what he tells you. This ought to be subtitled "Know when to hold them and when to fold them."

4 out of 5 stars Burning the old bridge to build a new one........2003-10-10

David Jenkins applies his experience from years of working with non-profit organizations to this smart and entertaining book. Jenkins is not afraid to burn some bridges. His observations and stories, along with many anonymously-attributed comments and anecdotes, make for lively and often irreverent reading. At the heart of the book, however, is Jenkins' passion for his subject: his intense frustration at what he and others have often experienced with non-profits, and his sensible, clear-eyed thoughts on how to make things better.

5 out of 5 stars Revolution or Evolution?.......2003-10-01

Having been involved with many, many non profit boards across many different levels of our society for over 30 years, both in Europe and America, I can honestly say that David Jenkin's book is a wake up scream to the non-profit industry - use the 501(c)to achieve something positive. My experience is that 501(c) organizations absolutely waste the diminishing resources and community spirit currently available in these financially challenged times. Community spirit and precious volunteer hours are just being flushed away by egocentric and self-seeking board members who generally have no common sense or experience in running a non-profit enterprise.

This book should be compulsory reading for every 501(c) start up member - and all board members should have to prove annually that they do not come close to matching the accurately drawn prototypical profiles that David has so successfully described.

The 501(c) industry is sinking fast - it is time for the rules of board members to be changed - every board member should have to demonstrate an unequivocal knowledge of the business and to accept the liabilities and to accept public examination in the event of failure - put all non-profits on the same stage that Enron, WorldCom and Tyco have found themselves.

If the status quo remains, the rank and file members of these organizations may just rebel against the uneducated and damaging decisions of the board. Leave the decisions to the paid professionals, and let success be the result.

David Jenkin's book should be the flag that leads to evolution, otherwise non-profit heads will roll through revolution.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Eade excells in this book!!.......2006-05-29

"The Chess Players Bible" -James Eade

Author James Eade seems to be distancing himself from his earlier standard, "Chess For Dummies" and I'm very pleased to see him introduce another beginner's chess book. This one is better by far.

This is a different format from the majority of chess books, for a couple of different reasons. (1) It is spiral bound, so that once you fold the book open, it stays open, and will fold flat for easy study. (2) It is ILLUSTRATED throughout with clear, concise images of the chess board and piece positions, and in COLOR too!

The coverage of OPENINGS is excellent, from the Romantic Openings to the Queeen's Pawn games, etc This is really great material, in its presentation, for easy assimilation by beginners. Because of the novelty of the splendid illustrations, this book receives a special recommendation.

TACTICS: Eade gives good, basic coverage of tactics, and I believe his illustrations help clarify these for beginners.

***About the Author: James Eade***

James Eade is a very STAND UP guy, taking on the entire chess establishment in the USA with charges that the U.S. Chess Federation was being mismanaged and driven to bankruptcy (which it was at the time!). Notwithstanding, EADE was one of three individuals to bail out the USCF when, near financial ruin, USCF could not afford to send a chess team to the OLYMPIADS. EADE is a strong advocate for chess in the Olympics. By any standard, this is a STAND UP guy.

***The Price***

The price is fair, and not excessive, because AMAZON reduces the full retail to $14.95. Even the full retail price of $21.95 is not necessarily excessive, because spiral-bound books are more expensive to produce. In my opinion, most beginner books priced over $20.00, are a rip-off, but that is for 2 specific reasons. Paperbound books are not that expensive to make, so that $21.95 is a "padded" price for a plain paperback. That is not the case here. The second reason a $20.00 book is a rip-off generally, is that paperbacks that are EXCELLENT beginning instruction have been around for years, and often sell for around $9.95, so that many new books are merely endless and mindless REPETITIONS of the same teachings that have been around for over a hundred years.

However, I am recommending Eade's "Chess-Player's Bible" as a fine book, if you are waiting for the next edition. The reason you should wait is that there are some obvious PROOFREADING errors that require correction; for example, this crazy mix up on the endgame study from page 190 where White is supposed to promote the rearward pawn to a Queen:

White K at f4, white pawns at f3 & f2
Black K at f6, WHITE TO MOVE:

1.Ke4 Ke6
2.f4 Kg6??? (only if Black's K moves 2 squares at a time!?)
3.f5 Kf7
4.Ke5 Ke7
5.f6+ Kf7
6.Ke6??? (violates the Rule that says KINGS must stay one square apart. Here, the White K moves right next to Black K, an obvious ILLEGAL move!)
continuing, Black King plays 6. ...Kf8

I don't know the solution to the problem, but the 2 major errors here indicate that the proofreader did not do his work. Please do not mistake the criticism here, because the book is still worth having. Even some of the great classics of chess literature, such as REUBEN FINE's books, contain errors.

The ILLUSTRATIONS are a superb feature, far exceeding most paperbacks, and Eade may be setting a new standard. This book is highly recommended. ---Bruce R. Bain, President, Denver Chess Club

5 out of 5 stars Chess Player's Bible-A Big Amen!.......2005-09-22

A very informative book on how to play chess and well illustrated. Two Thumbs Up!

5 out of 5 stars My dreams of perfect beginner book have become true!.......2005-05-07

I thought that a comprehensive book explaining all basic stuff in a lively way would be an impossible task. But Mr. Eade has really made it!

Firstly, I love the 3-D diagrams, the layout of book is more visual as in usual chess books and I must admit it really works! There are first of all all the elementary stuff, rules etc but after that you get ao overview of opening principles, not forgetting the hypermodern approach. There's a section describing openings and their general ideas, there's a section for tactics and strategy.

I'm just overwhelmed of this superb book. James Eade explains some fundamental pawn structures which are typical for specific openings - that's something most beginner books don't do. There's some nice guide for essential endgame stuff, this book is simply the best beginner book availible I think players up to 1800 can benefit most of this book.

4 out of 5 stars Suitable for about a USCF 1600 rated player too!.......2005-04-25

I'm about a USCF 1600 (Class B player) and I'm improving from this book because it is suitable for me.

This is why l like this James Eade chess book.
1. This book relies on the chess diagrams, not the chess notation, so learning from this book is easier because it's less confusing. Easy to follow diagrams!
2. I love the spiral form because the book holds flat by itself on a table! It is much better than paper back and hard back form!
3. There are 3D diagrams on key positions on almost every page, so I can easily follow through learning new strategy.
4. This book covers all aspects of the game clearly, TACTICS such as the fork, deflection, pin, overloading, discovery etc, endgame such as opposition, triangulation, basic king pawn endgames, queen vs rook endgame etc. , MIDDLEGAME/ STRATEGY such as making a luft, bad bishop, good bishop, how to make use of your rooks, knights, outposts, pawn islands, pawn chains etc. OPENING it shows you different kinds of opening such as the Silican, Ruy Lopez, French Defense, Queen Pawn opening, how to play the opening such as development, timing, etc.) so I can improve my all around game!

This is why I don't like this book.
1. There are no chess excercises/problems to test your knowledge in the book. This is key to improve and I hope James Eade can add chess excercises/problems to another edition of this book if he writes another edition of this book.
2. There are no 'winning game pointers', such in the other book, The Idiot's Guide for Chess. (Patrick Pointer's) I hope James Eade can add 'winning game pointers' in an another edition if he writes one.

Overall, This book is good.
Why?
1. It has helped me gain about 100 points, (1500 to 1600) in about 4 months.

One of the biggest mistakes non-golfers and even casual duffers make about the Royal and Ancient game is assuming you don't have to be in shape to play it. The truth is, golf can be an exhausting affair. You can't be a physical wreck and play golf consistently well; as in any sport, the better your condition, the better your chance of success. Two-time U.S. Open champ Ernie Els uses his Guide to Golf Fitness as both a soapbox to stress the benefits of good conditioning and a virtual gym to present a series of general and golf-specific exercises designed to drop your scores as successfully as a good putting tip.

Els developed his program--geared specifically to address a golfer's strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular system--with David Herman, the fitness trainer who helped Els shed the 15 pounds he credits with the resurgence of his game and better health overall. Though many of the exercises--all of which Els himself demonstrates in photographs--require gym equipment, others don't, and while all provide a workout, the program can be easily adjusted in its difficulty and demands to fit any level of desire and ability. "It's important," Els stresses, "to choose an exercise program that you enjoy," that challenges, but doesn't grind you down. There's enough grinding required on the course already. --Jeff Silverman

Book Description

It doesn't matter if you're Ernie Els or just a weekend player; everybody who plays golf wants to play better. But taking lessons and putting in hours of practice aren't the only ways to improve your game. You need to be in shape to play your best. In fact, the right fitness routine can mean more to your game than tinkering with new swing techniques or purchasing the most expensive equipment. And you don't have to be David Duval, Tiger Woods, or Ernie to benefit from being fit. Even a casual player can improve his or her game by working out the right way. Ernie Els' Guide to Golf Fitness will help you design a program by focusing on four key fitness areas:Improving your cardiovascular fitness to help keep you strong--both mentally and physically--at the end of a long round or after many days of playing in a rowGiving you the flexibility to improve your form and to increase club head speed, allowing you to hit the ball fartherBuilding up your muscular strength, so that you'll add power and create more control and balance throughout your swing Doing specific exercises designed to strengthen areas most susceptible to common golfing injuries
Ernie Els' Guide to Golf Fitness gives golfers of all skill levels a chance to improve their games, even if they don't have the time to get out to hit balls. It's based on Ernie's own program, which was designed by his trainer, David Herman. It isn't about grueling workouts that leave you exhausted, and it's a lot more than just a famous golfer showing you how to do basic exercises. It teaches a philosophy of golf-specific training that will change the way you exercise and help you design a program that will enable you to hit the ball farther and play better overall. And best of all, this is a flexible program that, if necessary, you can do on your lunch hour.

According to this program, there's no need to feel guilty if you can't get to the gym for a week here and there--as long as you get back quickly. David and Ernie encourage you to train, not strain--severe soreness has no place in the golfer's workout. If you want to help prevent injuries and improve your confidence and mental focus--on the course and in your life--David and Ernie's program is perfect for you.

4 out of 5 stars Great workout for your golf game and your life.......2006-09-08

I thought this was a great basic book on fitness for your golf game. Ernie and David cover stretching, weights, cardio, nutrition, and some injury prevention. The book is less than 150 pages long, so it doesn't go into great detail on any one of the subjects, but I thought that each chapter did cover the subject adequately. The authors give two different suggested workout programs. One for beginners and the other more advanced.

I consider myself to be fairly fit and healthy, and I have used personal fitness trainers in the past. This book didn't violate any principles that I have learned, and it even taught me some things. One - is that David doesn't recommend doing straight bar bench presses for golfers. He likes either the machine or dumbbells for a chest exercise. He feels that the straight bar is too prone to shoulder injury for a golfer.

One thing I wish they had expanded on was an early mention of the three different body types, Ectomorphs, Mesomorphs, and Endomorphs. I hadn't heard this distinction before and was hoping that the book referred back to this in later chapters with suggestions on different exercises for each body type. Unfortunatley for me, it didn't refer to them again at all.

Overall I thought the book did exactly what it promised - it educated the reader on Golf Fitness. If readers follow it's guidelines and the work out program, they will improve strength, flexibility, and overall health. All of which will help lower the golf scores!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on golf fitness........2006-04-30

Els does it again. He focuses on the essentials that will help the reader's golf game only now it involves conditioning. Now, I find it amusing that people complaining about "knowing" already of the excercises Els recommends but are they actually doing them? Sure, it's easy for someone to mouth off and say that this book isn't offering anything new but the fact is, they looked up the book for a reason. That's Els MO when it comes to instruction. He expects the reader to actually follow his advice.(Imagine that!) He may be showing simple excercises but the bottom line is, as simple as they are, they work. The reader has to simply committ to doing them

4 out of 5 stars A nice fitness book that will improve your golf game.......2005-02-02

I dont understand why other readers didnt like this book. It delivers what it says it will. It is a fitness guide book that will help lower your golf scores if you do what it says.

1 out of 5 stars Great Expectations Ruined.......2002-11-30

Bought this thinking it would give me some useful exercises for my golf game. Unfortunately, the exercises and ideas are so basic you probably could guess 90% of what's in here. Maybe this is truly all a person needs to know, but I have to think there are some better and more creative approaches out there. Not at all inspirational or motivational.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time/money.......2002-09-07

Book summary: 1) do basic weight training exercises at high repetition to maintain strength without bulking up, 2) follow basic nutrition regimen, 3) maintain flexibility using traditional stretching exercises, 4) you can only excel at golf if you are long and lean. There truly isn't a new thought or idea in the entire book. Do yourself a favor and pass on this stinker.

    Book Description

Even today, veneration of older people continues to be the norm among ethnic groups and all other societies be they first, second, or third world. Our country seems to be unique, even among other highly industrialized countries, in viewing the elderly as a social problem.

Forget about stereotypes regarding senior citizens—seniors are far from obsolete. They are one of our country's greatest and most valuable resources, and we need to reevaluate our attitude toward them.

Staying in the Game profiles twenty American seniors, all age seventy-five or older, and discusses how they've managed to live happy, productive, and fulfilling lives. Even with different social, educational, and financial backgrounds, all of them remain very active and continue to pursue their goals.

By sharing their life stories—from childhood to the present—these senior citizens offer invaluable lessons on how they overcame barriers, developed philosophies on life, and kept on going despite adversity. Author David Gotlieb, a senior citizen himself, proves that it's entirely possible to understand senior citizens in America, thus improving our perception and appreciation of this wise generation.

An upbeat guide to staying active in the game of life. Gottlieb, a retired professor and dean, interviewed 20 people over the age of 75 in order to determine what it takes to maintain an active lifestyle later in life. "Some of their answers may surprise you, inspire you and encourage you to stay in the game." Each of the stories offers a different path to a productive and enjoyable life, and the interviewees come from a wide variety of backgrounds and boast hundreds of years of collective experience—from Horton Foote, famous author and playwright, to Anna Cecilia Merenda, founder and CEO of a construction company and an early feminist. Even though a table of contents or an index would have been helpful, this collection is a great indicator of why society must value senior citizens. Listen up, youngsters: There's plenty of sage advice to be gleaned from these pages.

          Book Description

In the midst of a grisly murder spree at neighboring schools, tall, gorgeous Shelley Brinton transfers to Spofford College. Is it just coincidence that two of the victims were students at her former school? Or that Shelley won't explain her mysterious nighttime disappearances? Her softball teammates become suspicious as evidence mounts against the secretive woman.

Wrestling with the heartache of a recently failed relationship, Angela Wedgewood finds herself unwillingly attracted to Shelley in spite of warnings from her friends. Could the intriguing newcomer possibly be involved in the killings? Angela's heart says "No," but her common sense whispers, "She could be."

5 out of 5 stars Love Conquers All.......2007-06-27

What a great book! An "oldie but goodie" from the talented Nann Dunne, STAYING IN THE GAME is well worth the time to read. Starting with a protagonist who is secretive, talented, and beautiful, yet reclusive and mysterious, this book will keep the reader on their toes until the very last page. The mysterious woman, Shelley Brinton, has a history of transferring colleges, anger problems, and problems with the law. She fits the description of a serial killer who has been victimizing women at local colleges.

Despite the warning signs, Angela Wedgewood finds herself undeniably attracted to Shelley. Even worse, the more Angela falls in love with Shelley, the more she fears the dark woman might actually be guilty.

A riveting book, with multi-dimensional characters and an engaging storyline, GAME is one you most certainly should not miss.

3 out of 5 stars Fun softball but a walk as a mystery.......2002-05-03

Several young women, students from nearby colleges in semi-rural Pennsylvania, have been found murdered. The various police departments have yet to find the killer who favors tall, dark- haired victims and butchers them with relish.

Shelley Brinton is a new student at Spofford College and on the women's softball team. Tall, dark-haired, and beautiful, she is a skilled and powerful player who seems to harbor many secrets as well as a fierce temper. Angela Wedgewood and her teammates are curious about the enigmatic Shelley who will be competing with Angela to play first base. An equally skilled athlete, Angie, who has been nursing a broken heart for months, is actually more than curious. She is very attracted to Shelley. Is there some connection between Shelley and the murders? Some of the teammates find her secrecy suspicious. Could Shelley actually be the killer?

Dunne's mystery seems to go in two directions at the same time. The youthfulness of Angie and her teammates creates an almost comic quality of a Nancy Drew parody as the gang sets out to track down the killer! However, it was sometimes difficult to keep track of who all the ball players are. And some of the information that they discover seems unlikely. The severity of Shelley's situation is unnecessarily complicated. So much so that it makes her chances of returning to Spofford seem slim.

Dunne's descriptions of the softball games as well as the practice sessions are detailed and engrossing. The development of the romantic relationship between Angie and Shelley is
pleasantly paced. And the depiction of players willing to help one another improve their skills for the betterment of the team, is positive and makes an encouraging role model. It seems unnecessary to include the grudge carrying Hurtz who resents loosing her position because of Shelley. These elements maybe typical of women's collegiate athletics but they don't seem to fit with the high suspense and deadly threat of the grisly murders.

From the first page of Staying in the Game, the reader knows that the killer is female and lesbian. This reader understands the point of this choice as a plot device. However, it is both tremendously improbable and feeds into unfortunate, homophobic stereotypes to use such a ploy. Neither the killer's apparent mental illness nor the prominence of other "positive" lesbian characters justifies or compensates for the killer's lesbian identity.

Overall Staying in the Game is not a bad story and as Dunne's first novel, it does show promise. It will be interesting to see what future stories she pens. Hopefully she will continue to explore the craft.

          4 out of 5 stars A FINELY CRAFTED MYSTERY.......2002-01-11

This mystery, written by Nann Dunne, the co-author of the bestselling novel, TRUE COLOURS, is a finely-created mystery. Who is the mysterious Shelley Brinton? Is she a murderer? Can Angela Wedgewood and her college mates and softball buddies trust her?

The story is involving and lively. Readers will be kept wondering about the identity of the murderer right up to the end and stay on their toes with plot turns and red herrings. The co-ed murders are a bit grisly, but they make sense at the end, and the exciting unmasking of the murderer and the fallout from its denouement are capably handled with good pacing, flow, and narrative. I also liked the fact that the book's wrap-up didn't take place in a quick summary, but rather unfolded in a satisfying manner.

Along with other books like Trish Kocialski's FORCES OF EVIL, R.S. Corliss's CONSPIRACY OF SWORDS, and Sharon Bowers' LUCIFER RISING, this mystery is well-thought-out and with a cast of believable characters.

All in all, a fine mystery from this up-and-coming author.

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Mystery with a Touching Love Story.......2001-12-13

I just finished Nann Dunne's book, Staying in the Game, and I have to say that it was a fantastic thriller. I couldn't put it down! The gripping, suspenceful mystery kept me guessing until the unveiling of the killer. There were more than enough twists and turns along the way to keep things interesting. Ms. Dunne's style reminded me very much of Barbara Michaels. As an added bonus, Nann Dunne weaves a touching love story in the midst of all the suspence. Much of the book revolves around the softball diamond and her experience with sports, and softball in particular, shows itself in her confident handling of the game scenes. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good, well-crafted mystery.
