Until this summer, the biggest problems 16-year-old Samantha Davis faced were her embarrassingly large breasts, (nicknamed "the Grand Tetons after those mountains in Wyoming,") and the fact that her gorgeous best friend, Kitty, always made her feel like a Plain Jane: "It sounds awful, but if you saw a Jaguar and a Ford Taurus parked next to each other, which one would you want to drive?" But now Sammie's parents are splitting, and suddenly she is being assaulted by changes from every direction. She is forced to move from upstate New York to Manhattan, play nursemaid to her depressed mother, and suffer the utter boredom of not knowing anyone in a city of 8 million. But then she meets Eli, the cute "crunchy granola" son of her mom's friend, and Phoebe, the quirky girl in Central Park who categorizes people by the dog breed they resemble. Exposure to the urban scene, new friendships, and a developing sense of self cause Sammie to realize "that along with love comes other four-letter words. Like hate, obviously.... And gain. And most important, grow."

Like other recently published first novelists Lori Aurelia Williams (When Kambia Elaine Flew in from Neptune) and Cat Bauer, (Harley: Like a Person), Carolyn Mackler convincingly captures all the drama, longing, and humor of 21st-century female adolescence. Fresh, funny, and completely irreverent, Love and Other Four-Letter Words is destined to find a place in the hearts of teenaged girls. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

Book Description

With her parents splitting up, 16-year-old Sammie Davis may not want to feel a thing, but feelings happen. For starters, she’s plenty angry. Her dad’s leaving their upstate New York home and moving clear across
the country. Her mother—well, she’s packing up and relocating to New York City with Sammie, who has no say about any of it. Overnight Sammie is forced to deal with change. And one change spawns another: Roles get reversed, old and new friendships tested, and sexual feelings awakened. It’s a scary time. But as Sammie realizes that things can’t stay the same forever, that even the people she loves and trusts the most can disappoint her, she begins to accept that change isn’t always bad. It’s how you cope, jumbled feelings and all, that counts. And as she copes, Sammie’s sense of self emerges proud and strong.

4 out of 5 stars A slow start with a grand finish........2007-06-09

I read Vegan Virgin Valentine first. That was a great book, so this author had a lot to live up to. It was a slow start, but Carolyn Mackler managed to come out ahead in the end. I really felt like she captured the heart of Sammie Davis. Did Sammie find love and other-four letter words? You'll have to read the book to find out. Or other reviews. Wink. Wink.

4 out of 5 stars Carolyn Mackler never disappoints.......2007-03-30

This young adult novel, by the prolific Carolyn Mackler, chronicles Samantha Davis' move to New York City after her parents separate. Before the separation, Sammy lived in upstate New York with her professor dad and former-artist mom, and hung out with her gorgeous best friend Kitty. Kitty gladly reports details of her burgeoning sexual exploits to Samantha, to Sammy's dismay. Post-move, Sammy is splitting a Manhattan apartment with her mom, who is severely depressed due to the divorce and discovers moving back to NYC doesn't necessary make her "artist's block" disappear. Samantha finds herself responsible for avoiding parking tickets, paying bills, and getting groceries as her mom sinks into depression, while avoiding her father's phone calls. While taking care of the dog, Samantha befriends Phoebe, and realizes perhaps Kitty wasn't the best "friend" a girl should have. The major changes in her life cause Samantha to realize she's growing up, and deals with friendship, her parents, and romantic relationships. The humor of this novel, paired with frequent pop-culture references, and realistic adolescent worries make this another great addition to the Carolyn Mackler line of Young Adult novels.

4 out of 5 stars I Love This Book.......2007-01-22

I first picked up this book back when I was in middle school. I love the title - that's what made me want to read it. In reading the book, I wasn't very interested in Sammie's family problems, I was more interested in her interaction with members of the opposite sex, as I suppose any curious middle school kid would be. I remember being fascinated with Eli and wishing my own Eli would come find me.

It's a great, fun read. I read it again this year (I'm a senior in high school now) just for kicks. Read it in about three hours :-) It's just a cute book to give the middle school girl in your life.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not powerful.......2006-09-05

I was really looking forward to reading this book because I LOVE "The Earth, My Butt and Other Big, Round Things" but I found this book merely to be a good read. I was etertained without beeing moved by the situations Sammi faced, and I feel her charater was more shallow and undeveloped compaired to the situations she was facing. I did find Eli a very interesting fellow, and I was moved at times by the relationship between Sammi and her mother. I just wish there was more development of that teenaged angest.

2 out of 5 stars sucky!!!! ugh.......2006-07-14

goodness, what do I have to say to this poorly written novel. hmmm.....Sucky!!! Wow this book seemed like it could have been written by a second grader. It was so not what I thought it would be. Don't buy it I RECOMMEND THAT YOU DON'T!!

Book Description

A tour de force work by a leading scholar, "Race" Is a Four-Letter Word explores the history of the concept of race in America, the reasons why the concept has no biological validity, and the ways in which it grew to become accepted as an idea that virtually everyone regards as self-evident. An ardent and eloquent opponent of typology, essentialism, and stereotyping, C. Loring Brace has based this engaging study on the "Problems of Race" course that he has taught at the University of Michigan for the past thirty-five years. Opening with an explanation of why the concept of race is biologically indefensible, "Race" Is a Four-Letter Word shows how the major elements of human biological variation have unrelated distributions and cannot be understood if the existence of "races" is assumed as a starting point. The book then examines the course of events that created the concept of race, journeying through time from Herodotus through Marco Polo; to the Renaissance and the role of the New World; on up to the American Civil War, the curious results of the alliance switch in World War I, Arthur Jensen, The Bell Curve, J. Philippe Rushton, and the Pioneer Fund in the twenty-first century. Ideal as a supplementary text in anthropology courses, "Race" Is a Four-Letter Word can also be used in history of science courses and sociology courses. It is captivating reading for professionals and anyone else who seeks enlightenment on the socially debatable issue of "race."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, comprehensive, historical review.......2007-05-15

This is an excellent book for those of you interested in the historical development of the concept of 'race', as well as having contemporary debates on race put into perspective. In particular, those offered in "the Bell Curve" and "Race, Evolution, and Behavior".

That said, race is a concept that cannot be discussed coherently because it is linked to so many emotive issues that reflect personal moral and political views about the world. As reflected in many of the reviews for other books on this topic.

This is perhaps one of the primary insights of this book: that many of the scientists engaged in research on 'race' and who take 'race' as a legitimate object of analysis are motivated for reasons other than the scientific pursuit of knowledge, and more in the interests of supporting views they already hold about the nature of people.

That said, this is book is no exception, and is certainly on the 'left' of the spectrum.

However, what is refreshing about (most) of the claims made in this book is direct way in which Brace addresses the arguments he is against, and the level of documentation he provides.

Highly recommended for its depth and comprehensive coverage of the history and current status of the 'race' debate.

Book Description

The finest written words from the legendarily opinionated frontman and songwriter of Screeching Weasel and The Riverdales. Culled from his own zine, Panic Button, caustic columns from Maximum Rock N Roll, and two new essays, including 'The Infinite Joys Of Being A Professional Musician', this is a smart (not to say smart-assed) collection of sarcastic, accusatory, hilarious and often self-deprecating diatribes, rants, opinion pieces, reportage, and some excellent in-depth articles. From the horrors of low-paying jobs, to hanging backstage with Nirvana, and sartorial elegance for punk rockers, this is the world of punk according to Mr Weasel. And its not such a bad place to be, or at least, visit.

4 out of 5 stars punk is a four letter word.......2005-10-18

Well, if you like ben weasel or screeching weasel you'll like this book. It was pretty short and sweet. Some of the chapters were really entertaining and interesting while there were a few which seemed to drag on a bit. I am a big screeching weasel fan so, I may be a bit biased to whether or not this is entertaining. But its cheap so what the hell right?

5 out of 5 stars Life through essays...........2005-10-10

5 out of 5 stars Ben Weasel Don't Like It !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-10-07

If you like people who call em' like they see em',with brutal honesty then you should like reading this book. Ben Weasel is a no BS kinda guy.....and his book "Punk is a Four Letter Word" sheds some light on his feelings toward well, just about everything. The book is a GOOD read, and an easy one. I'm not a big reader, and I finished it one sitting.

3 out of 5 stars Screeching Thru a Muzzle.......2002-06-07

This book is okay. It's a great read when Weasel is talking about his old band, Screeching Weasel, but is completely boring when he drones on about past day jobs or solitary hobbies (like running). Some critics say Weasel is the punk-rock Charles Bukowski, but that's an inacurate comparison. Where Bukowski was brutally honest, Weasel is annoyingly evasive, choosing to hide behind his stadium-sized ego. This book would have been great if Weasel talked more about what helped make him a punk-rock celebrity, namely his ex-girlfriend of 10 years and his old band. That said, this book does have two fantastic articles, one on Weasel meeting Curt Kobain, the other -- previously unpublished -- on advice for novice musicians.

5 out of 5 stars Ben's greatest hits!!!.......2002-05-19

This is the greatest hits of words without ever having been honored as such, Ben has been writing articles for years but if you have never been in the right place at the right time you would never know about it,so you have missed out, until now.If you have read some of his articles before, this is the chance to read them again and probably some you've missed, this book is about years of thoughts and life, my life, your life, their life, you will be able to relate to something in this book, from your fantasies to actual events that took place in your life, to your opinions that you had on your favorite music that you wished you could tell someone about if only someone listened, to your memories about past jobs, about when you met that "famous" person, and all the things you've ever thought about, you can relive all those moments through this book. Or if you've had the "perfect" life, read this book and feel superior.Ben is an EXCELLENT writer and if you've never been a fan of his before after reading this book you will be.You will want to send him a Christmas card with money in it.

5 out of 5 stars What a Great Reminder.......2006-09-22

Richard Battle does an amazing job of describing in this powerful book what makes him successful, not only in business but in life. It stands as an important reminder as to what we all need to be doing out there in the world to make our own positive impact.

His interlaced stories really bring his important lessons to life in a practical and easy to understand manner that people of any age can and will relate to. I found this book extremely inspirational and relevant to today's society as many of us have forgotten what character means.

I highly recommend this book. It will be an treasured item in my personal library and something I look forward to sharing with my two young boys as they grow older.

5 out of 5 stars Doing It All Could Be Doing a Lot of Us In.......2007-08-07

This book gets you to really look at yourself and determine if this "doing it all" is really a strength or not. The writing style is conversational with practical examples. Here are authors who really understand how hard it can be to ask for help. It is just as detrimental in business not to ask for help. I'm also going to suggest this book to all the business leaders I know.

5 out of 5 stars Help! I need somebody after all..........2007-08-03

I was brought up with the notion that to ask for help was
        1) impolite since it would be a bother to others
        2) a sign of weakness since I was perfectly capable of accomplishing most anything by myself.

So, as one who prided herself on independence and self-sufficiency, I would often find myself overwhelmed, angry, stressed, frustrated, and suffering from low self-esteem. One of my greatest strengths (at least from my point of view) became my biggest weakness. This book really opened my eyes and helped me identify for the first time why I felt so helpless. Great information and wisdom on a never-before addressed issue.

5 out of 5 stars It really is OK to ask for help.......2007-08-02

I am a high "A" personality ... while that's not a bad thing, it does cause me to think that I actually must complete a task for it to be done correctly! However, after meeting Peggy, experiencing her presentation and then reading her book, I've discovered that I really DON'T have to do everything myself and that YES, it is okay to ask for help. In fact, it is imperative to the quality of my life, and the quality of life of others around me, for me to ask for help. And, after asking for help, to accept that they will handle things differently than me and that that is just fine. Not only does it help me, but it helps them too. This book and this woman, have given me permission to let go and allow others to help me. This really has been a life changing experience for me.

        5 out of 5 stars Who, Me?.......2007-07-29

Here's a book that moved me to unaccustomed depths of introspection. Clearly, I am NOT a full-blown self-sufficient as described on these pages. Yet, I was there, sometimes squirming a bit uncomfortably as I became more absorbed in the reading. Those segments that undeniably hit home for me were brought to light for needed examination. There were definitions and symptoms described that fit me like a knitted glove. It was the first time I had taken a good, hard look at a corner of my being that I had largely ignored over the last 80+ years.

I was taken with the conversational style of writing and, most of all, the penetrating logic and insights brought to light on a subject seldom given the attention it deserves.

Sex Is Not a Four-Letter Word but Relationship Often Is is a sharp and refreshing departure from conventional books about sex and relationship that are based on psychological theories and principles. "If those things really worked," writes Gary Douglas, "wouldn't you have been free, expansive and joyful in your relationship a long time ago?" Funny, frank, and delightfully irreverent, Sex Is Not a Four-Letter Word but Relationship Often Is offers readers an entirely fresh view of how to create great intimacy and exceptional sex, and provides answers to questions you may never have thought to ask. How can you use energy to attract the person you're interested in? How can you claim and own the totality of your sexualness? How do know where your partner wants to be touched? How can you create sex unlike anything you've experienced before? What's so important about being able to receive? What's wrong with deciding you've chosen the "perfect" partner? What are the elements that create a free, expansive and joyful relationship? How do you create the relationship you truly desire? Sex Is Not a Four-Letter Word but Relationship Often Is is based on Gary's highly popular Access© Seminar, How to Have More Sex and Better Relationships with Clarity and Ease.

Feeling unfulfilled in the sexual intimacy of my life, I began to explore my sexuality and sexualness. This book describes much of what I had been looking for in my life and so much more. I realised that I had been attracted to men by my thoughts and looks, thinking that this one or that was my type. This book gave me the tools to look in another direction. I now ask my body will this man nurture my body? I practice the techniques in the book for full body orgasm. Wow! Thank you Gary Douglas!

I'm telling you, the tools in this little book work better than anything I've ever heard. I now get more sex, better sex, and have more fun than ever before. How does it get even better than that?

This book gives you a whole new perpective in what the choices are. I think that the traditional paradigm of relationships is failing, it it ever worked. It does not give you a new paradigm, it simply opens up infinite choice, I would buy this if I wanted to have a more expansive interaction with myself and others, this book opens up the choice of the perfect couple: the inclusive one.
