12.5 selling principles.......2007-10-01
I give Jeffrey Gitmor's Little Book of Selling 5+ stars for its content and breadth of coverage. I take away half a star because some materials are overwritten and too repetitive. In audio format the presentation would probably help the reader remember the message; in the current written format it is distracting. Even so, and without a reservation, I recommend this book to all sales people, especially sellers of knowledge. The 12.5 principles of selling are articulated well, and I plan to re-read this book.

I just ordered this book after taking it out from the library. I had bought "The Sales Bible" from a used book store. My college age son picked it up and studied it on his own this summer.
There is so much wisdom here, especially for college kids, as well aseveryone. I had been looking for the heir to Carnegie, Hill and Nightingale for practical ideas in doing business. This man delivers-with concrete suggestions. As we now possibly head into a recession, these techniques will be all that more important whether you're in sales or not. I also recommend his other books on networking, attitude and sales answers.
There are very few good business authors out there. This is one of them.

I enjoyed Mr. Gitomer's book. It can be an excellent reference source for those with high -sales self esteems (the "I know it alls") as well as those on the opposite end of the spectrum. What is refreshing about this "Little Red Book of Selling" is that it, like its author, is straightforward and delivers on all its promises.
Quincy Jones, while producing one of his greatest hits, "We Are The World", placed a sign on the door for participating stars which said: "Leave your egos at the door". Before reading this book, this advice could apply to potential readers. Because of commissions, bonuses, promotions, etc, some people are reluctant to admit shortcomings.
If they do not know something, they pretend that they do. If you can check your ego, I encourage opening this little red door. Inside you will find a wealth of detailed information ... covering all phases of any selling situation. I have been there, done that, and plan on returning. I strongly urge you to do the same. I am very pleased with this book. Jeff Gitomer has provided some fresh ideas that, if used, can really improve your sales career. I especially agree with his emphasis on humor. You must infuse humor into your sales efforts. As Jeff states it, "If you don't use humor, you will lose to someone who does." Make yourself likable to your prospects.

This book I loved when I was reading the pages, and how it gives you a little passport in the back of the book like it was actually a real passport. The books description of the garden when they first get out of the tree house in Japan just gives me a picture of what it looks like in real life. This book had a bit of humor and that adds coolness to the book. Buy this book!!!!!!!! I'm 11.

Osborne forever captures history, folklore and imagination into the minds of many young and old alike. Her books are ever a delight to read to my son (even though he's able to read by himself) and more, a delight to hear when they come out on audiocassette!

I liked it because Jack and Annie travel to Japan which is a really cool place and I think more people should read this book. It is better than any other book because it is the newest of the series.
Dragon of the Red Dawn.......2007-05-27
This is a wonderful book for kids. I love it, so much that I bring it with me everywhere I go. I have read this, and like it. It takes place In old Japan. Jack and Annie meet a poet named Basho, and spend the day with him. I have learned about Basho in school and most of the things the book told about him I knew. I was thrilled reading about the Samuarai, and when the fire came around I was so excited I almost screamed! Dragon of the Red Dawn is a good book to read.
Hard for parents to suspend belief, but the kids loved it........2007-05-14
Another classic Magic Treehouse installment, this time in imperial Japan. The haiku and deatils of life in Edo made this book informative for the little ones (4,6) and a little more interesting for the parents reading it. The fact that it involves a dragon was a big plus for both of them. The rating is only relative to other magic treehouse books, and not to the vast choice of better children's literature out there. All that said, I am sure it would make a good read for 7-8 year olds delving into books on their own for the first time.

Take a look inside this book and you'll see that this is no ordinary how-to guide. This guy is brilliant in that he has went off the beaten path of how a book is supposed to look. The book is approximately 5x8 in size, and is covered in red fabric and comes with a handy built in bookmark. I love the use of color throughout the book. The author has chosen to color important words and phrases throughout, to make them stand out in your mind, and there are some tasteful illustrations that enhance the messages conveyed.
I know so many sales people who don't like to read. If that's you, well, then you'll LOVE this book because not only is it an easy book to read and understand, but the style is totally fun. You may even forget you're reading and all the while you'll come away with a new perspective on selling!
I was hooked and knew I had to have this book from the beginning. I love the unconventional style of the book. Now, besides the great job he did on the look of the book, there is some extremely good information contained within these red walls. 99.5 real world answers are contained within 6.5 chapters. Loads of great advice on things like setting goals and How to do your best every day, prospecting, and even how to write a thank you note.
This book has more than earned it's spot on my bookshelf!
The first "Red" book is the one to buy!.......2007-06-03
Don't get me wrong, I really think Gitomer is a great writer and speaker but this book just rehashes topics he has already covered in his two best sales books, the Little Red Book of Sales and The Sales Bible. I love his "easy to read / no BS " style. Unfortunately for the reader there is nothing new here. Purchase the two aforementioned books and study those. I agree with another reviewer that each book he comes out with is not as potent as his first books. But I don't blame him for writing these rehashed versions of his most popular books... He is making lots of $$$! BTW... I have been in executive management for 15 years and have earned my MBA.

Understanding sales, whether you have done it all your life as I have (since I was 15 I'm 55) or you are just starting is crucial to your success. As the most successful salesperson in every company and position that I have had - I was amazed at what I learned from this to make me even more successful. Read the book, along with all his other books, find a commission job, as risky as it seems, (or start your own sales company) and there will be no limit to your income. The limit will come from you on your terms.

Sorry Katie - this wasn't one of your stronger efforts. I'm a big fan of the Ashling books. They're lots of fun, quick reads and the characters are pretty well developed and likable. It's not that the characters in this book weren't likable, just not that interesting. The story was weak compared to the others by this author. I'm afraid I wouldn't recommend it. There are better options out there for the time invested.

Even though I found this book very entertaining and amusing, I was very close to giving it 4 stars. And the reason is ....
The first 4 books in Katie MacAlister's Paranormals (A Girl's Guide To Vampires", "Sex and the Single Vampire", "Sex, Lies, And Vampires", "Even Vampires Get The Blues") are absolutely fantastic and actually about vampires. But this one, nothing of the sort....
But again .... the story is very interesting, amusing and engaging. Most of the characters are supernatural beings, there is quite a lot of "traveling" between worlds and of course there is romance.
If you are a type of a reader that pays immense attention to every detail concerning, for example, the historical parts of the story or any other descriptive flaws of the surroundings/characters etc., than I would definitely advise you to stay away. This books is just pure fun and light entertainment. So fans of paranormal mysteries/romance, and of course fans of Katie, go ahead and buy this book and enjoy it :)

Portia Harding was an uber-skeptic, but while on a trip to England, did agree to try to be more open to the idea that there was more to the world than what can be proven. Barely was the promise made than she had to make good on it. While relaxing in a fairy ring, she reads a summoning spell and in response, a woman calling herself the virtue, Hope, shows up, giving her the "Gift" before fleeing from pursuers unknown. Portia thinks she's just having a delusion, even after handsome Theo North shows up demanding that she grant him forgiveness and forcibly removing both her and her friend, Sarah from the fairy ring. The two women escape, but he continues to come after them, stating that he's a nephilim and needs her to forgive him. That's only the beginning of the weirdness. Odd people begin popping up to put Portia through "trials" so that she can join the Court of Divine Blood and take on her role as a virtue. Finally, Portia is forced to believe what is going on is real. Of course, by that point, the situation has turned dire. Theo has lost his soul and been turned into a Dark One, with her as his Beloved; and she has been accused of murdering Hope. Portia has scant days in which to complete her trials successfully, restore Theo's soul, and prove her innocence. She might also get to save the Court of Divine Blood in the process, but that's almost a side benefit. One thing's certain, when Portia is wrong, she's wrong in a big way.
**** Another certainty, in the real world, is that if readers are looking for clever, witty, paranormal romances, then they need look no further than Katie MacAlister to begin their list. Portia's conversion from skeptic to believer is filled with laughs and highlighted by moments of profoundness. This is the Best Dark One novel yet, and the ones that came before it were wonderful. ****

I love Katie Macalister's Aisling Grey Series so I was eager to start reading this book. After 135 pages I simply gave up, luckily I had a Keri Arthur for back up! The Portia character over analyzes everything to the point of boredom and then does it all over again a few chapters later. I got it the first time, you do not believe in the paranormal. Didn't some one write that a reader reads once and retains so you do not need to belabor a point over and over again? Portia is a pain pain and in my opinion the romance never really took off. Plus both character and author seem to have reglious hang ups and religion, like politics, is always a touchy subject.

Although its not as great as The Cat in the Hat, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish is certainly one of my children's favorites, and they especially love trying to read some of the rhymes outloud. Certainly a great choice for a book for your young ones.

One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss gives young children an excellent way to start reading independently. The book helps children learn to count to eleven and it increases their vocabulary as you read it along with them the first few times. Young children just learning to read will be able to read this book as one of their first books that they can read by themselves; and the cute illustrations will delight children and even adults everywhere.
The book's plot is not entirely deep--nor should it be for this exceptionally young, tender age group. The book helps kids to learn how to count to eleven and recognize the words for those numbers; it also uses pictures to introduce words for basic colors including red, blue, black, yellow and pink. Children also explore the concepts of old and new; fast and slow; high and low; thin and fat as well as here and there. Excellent! The book also introduces the telephone and how two people can communicate by phone. Your child will love that--they'll think that the phone is a toy!
The book is nicely bound and the strength of the hardcover binding makes the book tolerate the bending and occasional carelessness of a young child who is learning to read partly by using this book. Great!
I highly recommend One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish for younger kids who are just learning to read. This book will increase their vocabulary by introducing words, comparisons and pictures. The child also gets a heightened awareness of the world around them; and the adorable illustrations will delight children everywhere.

I could not put it down....It gave me the desire to go back and read my bible in a new light, from a woman's point of view! The characters in the bible came to life with their own unique personalities, although I know that the book is a novel and the author is not claiming historical accuracy. This book is a must-read!
A Man's Point Of View.......2007-10-02
I am 66 years old and just finished this book. People saw me reading "A Thousand Splended Suns" and recommended "The Red Tent". Both books are about women. I am sure women appreciate them because they learn about other times and culture. For a man, I think these books are so revealing because we learn, in addition, what its like to be a woman. I loved them both and cried reading both. I highly recommend them. You will have an emotional experience you will never forget.

I found the story hard to follow in the beginning, but I was drawn in more and more by the view of a woman's life in the past. It was engrossing.
An enjoyable piece of fiction.......2007-09-29
When I enjoy book as much as I enjoyed "The Red Tent" I always make myself read the "1 star" reviews. Here are some things to know before you read this book and are disappointed:
1) It is is fiction. It is found in the fiction section. It is listed as fiction.
2) The Bible is not exactly a verbatim account of history. I realize that this offends many, but the old testament is a compilation and translation of many stories and facts over a very long period of time. Personally, I can barely get a phone message correct. The "biblical scholars" who took offense made me smile. They need to refer to my #1 comment. The middle eastern experts also need to refer to #1. For me, this book opened my mind to a time period that I previously had little or no interest in and knew very little about. Because I read this book, I did more research to learn the facts.
3) Women menstruate. Men, if this offends you, beware. Women, if you find it icky to talk about, again, probably not the book for you. Let's just say the title is a big warning that this is a large part of the book.
4) There is a lot of emphasis on childbirth because before birth control, this tended to happen. A lot. Again, if birthing is too much, this is probably not the book for you.
5) The writing is wonderful. I think the reason this book draws such a strong reaction is because of how well the author depicts each situation and character. It is amazing. I felt like I was there.
6) This work of fiction made me think of how many versions there are of history. I am Catholic and I had never really thought of how ridiculous circumcism is or sounds to outside religions. This also made me rethink my original perception of those crazy, statue worshipping pagans (again being Catholic and growing up in a bible thumping, born again town, I could relate). I walked away with a "What if.."
7) It's unique. So many authors have tried to replicate this book. I think it's great that it inspired an entire genre of historical fiction from D List history makers. Kind of a "History from Kathy Griffin's Perspective."
So read it as fiction and you will enjoy yourself. If you think it's a documentary, you won't like because I'm sure there are many inconsistencies. This is extremely well-written, well developed and overall a fabulously enjoyable read. It is by far one of my all time favorite books- largely because of the writing and that it made me curious about a time period that I knew little about prior to reading the book.

You don't find many books that you honestly can't bear to put down. The Little Red Book of Wisdom is sincerely one of them. It is a testimonial book of sorts that models and inspires Christian integrity for business, family, and relationships in general.
The author runs a public relations business, and leads his company using Godly wisdom and sound priorities (family over business, people over $, and Godly integrity over everything).
Mark DeMoss attributes much of his ethos to his father who passed away when the author was only 17 years old. He says that his father was the wisest man he has ever known. I think it is astounding how much DeMoss' father impacted his life, and so many others vicariously through his son, when he invested only 17 short years with his boy. This teaches us to invest our time intently, and on the right things.

This is a fantastic read, and is very well written. Some very cool photos and lyrics are included. I spent the extra money to buy a hardcover version which is a good choice. The drug addiction and honesty that Anthony brings to that disease is worth the read alone. It is awesome he has found a way to deal with his addiction and keep writing and performing at an exceptional level.

For those who think they know the Chili Pepper story, or those that are new fans and are unaware of the beligerent lifestyle of the Chili's up unitl this decade, this book clears it all up. Discussed in a narrative voice, all the events and feelings are dictated by Anthony Kiedis and provide a real world connection to these superstars. His individual story as well as the group as a whole is shared in a way that makes them seem so human and makes anyone wonder, "how are these guys still alive, sane, and still making beautiful, boandary pushing music together?"

All I can say is that I wanted to have a book to read over the course of about half of the summer and instead I read it in just a couple of days! It's heartfelt & candid. And its written through the voice of Anthony Kiedis rather than someone taking his thoughts and trying to put them in some dull, refined, intellectual way. Anyway, now I have to find something to read that won't bore me after reading this great book!

An account of the Russian Mafiya is an daunting task that requires a great deal of research. While I have no doubt that many of the statements in this book are true, the book suffers from a terrible lack of organization. It seems as though Friedman decided to write this book in a stream-of-conscious format. The format problem is damaging to the credibility of the book because it can confuse readers.
The evolution of the Russian Mafiya, which is located at the conclusion of chapter 5, should really open the book. Instead, Friedman jumps right into a prison interview with little primer before the important text. The main thesis alleges that the KGB stashed much of the money after the fall in the Soviet Union in as many places as possible. Among these places was organized crime, which has been diversifying since the 1970's. The problem was exacerbated when the Soviet Union fell. And because many of these Russian are Jewish, they seek asylum in Israel.
One of the move informative chapters discusses the extortion practices that mafiya associates exhibited with Russian NHL player. The media seems woefully unaware of any problem. This chapter is toward the middle of the book, sandwiched between prison interviews, illegal schemes, and biographies of members. The format left me with little frame of reference or time line regarding this developing problem. The book could benefit from a return to an editor.

Contrary to some of the comments mentioned by those giving this book low marks; this book is extremely accurate and in NO WAY anti semitic. Some stated that this book was anti semitic because it did not talk about the good side of the Russian-Jew Imagre. NEWS FLASH!!! This book is about the Russian Mob! The book is about BAD GUYS! Who says the author has to talk about the honest and good Russian-Jew imagre?? Secondly those who said the content was embellished or un-believable obviously do not have any knowledge on the subject of the Russian Mafia. Myself being involved in law enforcement at the state and federal level for 23 years, I can attest that nothing is sensationalized in this book. Bottom line: this is not what you'd expect - 90's Russian mafia in the West stories. I was duped into... by the title 7 years ago... and pissed of by the good reviews which I saw now.
The great robbing of Russia and the spill-overs into the world have nothing to do with the hoodlum stories of this book.
Publishers do that: once a topic gets media attention... publish anything related.

A real eye-opener. Friedman writes about some pretty ruthless, cruel people. I don't know how the author could have possibly obtained all the information that he did; he is a brave man. I hope he's still alive, and will be amazed if he is, given the nature of the people about whom he has written. Friedman describes Russian Mafiya types operating in Toronto, near to where I live -- very unnerving. Mind you, if you live in NYC, Miami, Denver, San Francisco or Los Angeles, you are not alone...

Inspector Chen Cao of the Shanghai Police Bureau is taking a vacation, in part because he is annoyed at his boss, Party Secretary Li, but also because he has been made an offer he can't refuse by Gu, a triad-connected businessman. For what seems to be a fortune-with no apparent strings attached- he is to translate a business proposal for the New World, a complex of shops and restaurants to be built in Central Shanghai, evoking nostalgia for the "glitter and glamour" of the 1930s.
It is up to Detective Yu, Chen's partner, to take charge of a new case. Yin, a novelist, has been murdered in her room. At first it seems that only a neighbor could have committed the crime, but when one confesses, Yu cannot believe that he is really the killer. As Yu looks further into Yin's life, ample motives begin to surface, even on the part of Internal Security. But it is only when Inspector Chen steps back into the investigation that the culprit is apprehended. And then Chen discovers how Gu has played him and how he, in turn, can play the new capitalist system.
Qiu Xiaolong was born in Shanghai and received an MA in English and American literature in China. He received a PhD in comparative literature from Washington University in St. Louis, where he now teaches. He is the author of Death of a Red Heroine, which has now been translated into seven languages, and A Loyal Character Dancer, both available in paperback from Soho Crime.

Inspector Chen Strikes Again.......2007-06-22
Let me set out my bias at the outset: I love the Inspector Chen novels. I drink up each one and can't wait for the next to be published. The real question is why do I enjoy them so much. The mysteries themselves (this one included) are not so mysterious. They are relatively straightforward. No novel twists and turns to challenge the mind. So, as a mystery, I would rate the books as mediocre. But the characters are fantastic. They are tortured -- each struggling to find his or her own way in a society that changes year to year, even month to month. Things that were taboo a decade ago are now norms. The characters wrestle not only with how to adapt to these changes but whether to adapt at all. After all, haven't we seen China develop down a path only to abruptly change course in "1984" fashion? Some criticize the prose as being plodding. But the prose mirrors the characters. They are deliberate -- unsure of the changes in themselves and society. I love the Inspector Chen novels, not because of the mysteries but because of Inspector Chen and all the other characters.

In this detective novel, Qiu Xiaolong gives a detailed account of the tragic effects of the Cultural Revolution on ordinary -- and extraordinary -- people living in Shanghai in the 1990's. I could not solve the mystery, but I adored the poetry-spouting detective (who is probably quite a bit like the author) so much that I ordered Qiu's anthology of Tang and Song poetry.

This is the third novel in Qiu Xiaolong's Inspector Chen mysteries.
The murder of a dissident author comes at an inconvenient time for Inspector Chen. He has just taken a break from his "iron rice bowl" job to engage in some highly paid free-lance translating. At first he is content to leave the investigation of the murder to his deputy, Sergeant Yu, but pressed by Party Secretary Li and by his own growing curiosity, he becomes fully involved in the unravelling of the murder case.
His translating job, however, continues. He has been given the task by Dynasty karaoke club owner Mr Gu (introduced in the previous novel A Loyal Character Dancer). Mr Gu, who has Triad connections, has also supplied Chen with a xiaomi, or personal secretary, the young and attractive White Cloud.
By coincidence, the murder has taken place in a shikumen, one of the traditional styles of housing created during the era of the Foreign Concessions in Shanghai; the translation undertaken by Chen is of an investment proposal for a major commercial, retail and residential precinct in the heart of Shanghai designed in the shikumen style. The author creates an interesting tension between the reality of life in the shikumen that is the murder site (no privacy, too many families living in incredibly cramped conditions) and the proposed New World project, the success of which, according to Chen "would depend on a myth - on nostalgia for the glitter and glamour of the thirties, or to be exact, on the recreation of that myth - blending the past into a delicious brew, a cup of cappuccino, to delight customers in the nineties" (p. 23).
Having been to Shanghai's model renovation in the shikumen style, the area known as Xintiandi, I can relate to the author's bemused sense of contradiction: the little museum and founding site of the Chinese Communist Party (my destination) is hardly noticeable among the yuppified coffee shops and bars of the new New China!
As with his previous novels, Qiu Xiaolong intersperses his narrative with insightful sociological observations. Some of these relate to the Cultural Revolution, which forms a backdrop to the murder, whilst others clearly reflect the author's concern with the growing gap between rich and poor that emerged in the wake of Deng Xiaoping's reforms: "The New World could turn out to be like present-day China, full of contradictions. On the outside, the socialist system under the rule of the Communist Party, but on the inside, capitalist practice in whatever disguise. Could the combination of the two really work?" (p. 139).
Nor would it be a Chinese novel without reference to food. White Cloud turns out to be an accomplished cook: "She finally emerged, carrying a large tray with a broad smile. `From the Dynasty Club,' she announced, placing on the folding table an impressive dinner that included some delicacies he had never seen before. One was a small dish of fried sparrow gizzards, golden crisp. How many sparrows had gone into the making of that dish, he wondered. The other dish, of duck, was also original - it was duck heads with the skulls removed, so people could easily reach the tongues, or suck out the brains. It was the sauna shrimp, however, that really impressed him. River shrimp were brought to the table in a glass bowl, live, still jumping and wriggling. She also provided a small wooden pail whose bottom was covered with red hot stones. She poured some wine into the bowl of shrimp, then took the drunken shrimp from the bowl and put them into the pail. There was a shrill hiss, and in two or three minutes, a plate of sauna shrimp appeared." (p. 108).
Some western reviewers have found the narrative pace and unexpected thrills of the mystery genre lacking in this novel; however, it is an intriguing tale and a pleasure to be transported back to a familiar Chinese setting.

Another engaging Inspector Chen mystery, but this time his sidekick Detective Yu is more involved, which adds breadth to the story. But this is not so much a mystery as a portrait of modern Shanghai, which in spite of its economic boom is still haunted by the horror of the Cultural Revolution. Although the denouement seems a bit dragged out, this is a finely written piece of work.

Qiu Xiaolong writes in a way that is so wonderful on several levels:
1. He is a superb writer.
2. These are very good mysteries/crime stories. No pat endings and detailed characters with complex motives and relationships.
3. This view into modern life in China and the effects on its people of that nations recent history are not to be missed. Nowhere will you find such a detailed and eye-opening look at "real life" in China unless you have friends from there!
