Book Description

In Vogue is a fascinating look at the history of the world's most influential magazine. The complete compendium is illustrated with hundreds of covers and archival interiors of past Vogue editions, featuring the work of some of the twentieth century's most respected artists, cover illustrators, and photographers—from Edward Steichen, Toni Frissell, and Erwin Blumenfeld to Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, David Bailey, Helmut Newton, Annie Leibovitz, Mario Testino, Steven Klein, Bruce Webber, and Herb Ritts. In 1909, an entrepreneurial New Yorker named Condé Nast took charge of a struggling society journal and transformed it into the most glamorous fashion magazine of the twentieth century. In Vogue traces the history, development and influence of this media colossus—from its beginning as a social gazette in the late nineteenth century, to the exploration of modern fashion photography and new visuals in the mid-twentieth century, to its status as the top style magazine today. The book explains the makings of the magazine—from runways, to editorial meetings, to the pages of Vogue. The thoroughly researched story incorporates first-person accounts, interviews with editors and photographers, and excerpts from stories written in the magazine by many world-renowned writers, including Truman Capote, Aldous Huxley, Richard Burton, Federico Fellini, and Marcello Mastroianni. Unparalleled in its scope and exceptionally illustrated, In Vogue is sure to be among the most important publications on the subjects of culture, art, fashion, photography, and media.

What attracts you to Vogue? Chances are that element is represented someplace within the pages of In Vogue.

To me, the photographs are the main appeal of Vogue. Since its founding on December 17, 1892, Vogue has attempted to capture current and future fashion through its images. The magazine has been blessed by talented work done by most of the world's best fashion photographers since then who brought us the most interesting society women, celebrities, cultural icons, and, of course, fashion models. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the book contained at least a few works by each of the greatest photographers to appear in Vogue. Most of the images were known to me, but a number were new. My main disappointment was that the photographers I like the most didn't have more photographs in the book. But the book is very bulky and heavy as it is.

To my interest in the photographs came many essays about why the photographers were selected and what the editors asked them to accomplish. The interaction of the art directors and the photographers was particularly noteworthy in regard to covers.

I have also spent many years as a management consultant in the magazine industry. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there's a pretty complete overview of the management thinking and decisions that led to Vogue becoming so successful.

But the most interesting surprise came in the extended views into the editorial philosophies and working styles of the magazine's editors. Creating a fashion magazine is very demanding, and Vogue has been fortunate in its editors both for their energy and their vision for the reader.

If neither business nor editing interest you, you'll still find lots of marvelous images to help you trace the development of fashion and style in the United States over the last 100 plus years.

Here are a few of my favorite photographs in the book:

3 out of 5 stars Just OK........2007-06-28

I liked the information and photos about the early Vogue, and wish there was more of it. I was not so interested in the later stuff, as it seemed overly self-important. Instead of presenting fashion, the current Vogue seems to commision special clothes for its photo shoots. What's the point if you can't buy that? Plus the photos don't even show what the clothes look like. I have better books on fashion, but this really was about the history of the magazine, and as such it succeeds. I just don't happen to like the magazine as it never shows anything I'd want to wear.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificient overview of an iconic magazine.......2007-06-22

Ten gets you one that when you ask someone to name a fashion magazine, the first answer you get will be, "Vogue". That's how much of an institution the magazine has become. While "Elle" and "Women's Wear Daily" might dispute the contention, "Vogue" seems to have become the periodical of record for worldwide haute couture. As such, as the authors note in their introduction, a basic history is past due. With a great deal of help from the Vogue staff itself - Anna Wintour, the magazine's longtime editor (and so prominent a figure in her own right that Meryl Streep's spoof of her in last year's movie "The Devil Wears Prada" was instantly recognizable), is prominent in the list of contributors - Angeletti and Oliva, magazine historians both, have assembled an informative text and a gorgeous array of imagery which effectively covers the century-plus history of Vogue, from the cover of the very first magazine to the latest photos of Nicole Kidman. The book is certainly a highly display-worthy item, as another reviewer has suggested, but more than that, it's meant to be leafed through and read. You can find it brand-new at a wide variety of prices, but even if all the Amazon Marketplace sellers were somehow sold out of their copies, it'd still be worth the list price!

5 out of 5 stars A travel through time by book.......2007-05-14

The authors of In Vogue composed a diversified chronicle of the appearance and the development of Vogue from 1892 until today. The photographs chosen portray the history of fashion photography wonderfully, each of them either a ravishing new sight or a spectacular recognition. The structuring by Decade, introduction of publishers, contributing editors, photographers, etc interposed by special contributions and excerpts of resumes offers the reader a diverting journey trough publishing history in general and the publishing of fashion in particular.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-10-04

This is a nice book to read, but the illustrations of techniques are not very helpful and I consider myself an advanced intermediate knitter. I admit I was expecting some patterns and was not smart enough to note the book descriptions did not say that there are none. As an avid reader of Vogue knitting over the years, I'm glad I have kept as many as I have. I would have borrowed this from the library, but not purchased.

2 out of 5 stars Bespectacled Readers of 50 + : Beware!.......2007-09-13

Do I wish I had read the reviews before ordering this book. I was not expecting basic information, as good as it may be. To knitters/crocheters who buy this book, techniques at a beginner's and even more advanced level are most probably not unknown. I expected more articles covering revolutionary knitting milestones - about the evolving of knitting. For my taste, the articles were not selected with the aspect: THE BEST....
however, I should say to younger readers that the various articles are worthwhile reading as it improves one's understanding of the history of knitting during the last 25 years.

The title: ...25 Years of Articles..." ALSO draws all those faithful Vogue Knitting Magazine readers who are at least in an age bracket between 50 + and ... well, very senior. And who very often wear glasses. Here comes my point: the book is SO hard to read! The very small print and particularly the pastel color of the print (such as a diluted black or soft light yellow and pastel blue on a glossy white paper!) are a strain on the eyes and take away a lot of pleasure when reading the book. I wish I had been able to look INTO the book before I bought it with so much anticipation.

Do not complain though about missing patterns: The title does not mention ANYTHING about patterns. Please note: NO PATTERNS.

Experienced knitters over 50: You may prefer buying new Vogue instruction books for your personal level of interest and knitting expertise and/or subscribe to the magazine - this book is just too basic, despite some articles, which bring back memories (wonderful articles bei E. Zimmermann and Meg Swanson, for example).

Unless you wish to have it in your library for completeness' sake - stick with those wonderful Vogue books on specific topics. It is a book to reminisce about the time Knitting grew up.

5 out of 5 stars For real knitters who want to learn more.......2007-09-06

I'm very picky about the knitting books I buy -- I won't buy just anything (especially now at the high price of some of the less-than-professional knitting books out now!). Anyway, Vogue has really put together something special here. It looks like a coffee-table book but is SO MUCH MORE! Techniques, advice, tips on how best to do things abound in this book .... well worth the price for your resource shelf

2 out of 5 stars watered down versions of the original articles.......2007-08-22

I have been a subscriber to Vogue Knitting since 1983, and have keep most of the back issues. I thought this would be a great book. I could get rid of all those old magazines, since finding an article in a compilation book should be easier than trying to remember which issue the original article was in. TO my disappointment the majority of the articles have been edited and abridged from the original. If you want thorough information for the knitting fanatic, then you should be looking for back issues of Vogue and skip this volume.

5 out of 5 stars Techniques at my fingertips.......2007-07-30

This is a great resourse. I have almost every vogue Knitting Mag put out, but when I need to find an article referencing a certain technique, the time spent going through the magazines is aggravating. This book pulls all the great articles and techniques into one book, I've already reached for it several times.

2 out of 5 stars No charts - What were they thinking?.......2007-07-30

The patterns in this book are beautiful, but they're useless to me because they don't have charts. I've never seen a book of this type without charts.

They should have used bigger needles for the lace patterns - many of the patterns were hard to see.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source of pattern stitches.......2007-03-31

I'm delighted! This will replace several dog-eared pamphlets and one that has indelible tea stains. There are many, many stitches, and I'm using three in the sweater I'm knitting now.

3 out of 5 stars I Expected More from a Vogue Knitting Book.......2007-02-08

Stitch dictionaries are useful to inspire original knitting patterns, as well as to check the accuracy of printed knitting directions. So I was excited to find Volume 1 of Vogue's 3-volume Knitting Stitchionary series. However, I must say that I am quite disappointed in this book. Having grown used to almost all knitting instructions(however simple) being accompanied by a chart to quickly show the knitter the pattern, I found the lack of charts in this book to seriously hamper its usefulness. Also, I found the lack of an index to be seriously annoying. For example, I wanted to refer to directions for the "Harris Tweed" stitch, and I ended up having to thumb through 40 pages of the book, only to discover that this quite common and beautiful pattern is not included!

The book does include 265 stitches made using only the knit and purl stitch, including a fairly extensive collection of lace patterns.

If your knitting library has room for only one stitch dictionary, I think there are better ones available. For the money, I recommend "The Big Book of Knitting Stitch Patterns" which is much more user friendly and available in paperback.

5 out of 5 stars Great Value!.......2007-02-07

The Vogue Knitting Stichionary Volume One: Knit & Purl is a fabulous book for those looking for patterns in one book. The book is great when you want to knit something as simple as a scarf and combine the different patterns. The directions are clear and easy to read. The price of the book is also so much less expensive as the book stores as well! It's a great value!

4 out of 5 stars Good but..........2007-01-19

This book needs an index with thumbnail pix. The book also could have included charts. Also I found it a bit boring with all swatches in the same color.

Overall, I am satisfied with vol 1 & 2, although a little disappointed with #3.

4 out of 5 stars Eye Candy Stitch Libraries.......2007-02-26

The series of Vogue Stitch Libraries are by no means intended to be as complete as Barbara Walkers or probably even the Harmony guides. However, their production values are SOOOOOOO much better that I find myself going to these in order to get a better view and more inspiration than the Walker or Harmony guides. If you can only afford one set of stitch dictionaries, these probably wouldn't be it. However, if you are a stitch pattern junky like me, these are definately a good set to add to your collection.

2 out of 5 stars Mere Recycling.......2007-02-20

Hardly comprehensive. As far as I can tell, all of the patterns are just recycled from designs in the Vogue Knitting Magazine during the 80's and 90's, but if you're entirely new to this knitting thing, it serves to demonstrate how colour works in knitting, in the broadest sense. A real disappointment after the first two decent volumes in the series.

3 out of 5 stars a little lacking.......2007-01-19

While this is a very comprehensive collection of color patterns, I would not say that it is the COMPLETE resource. As far as I can tell, the how-to section includes just 2 pages that describe yarn-overs, increases and decreases.

Vogue should be ashamed of themselves to not include a discussion of stranding and weaving techniques, or even the simple instructions of crossing over yarns in jacquard and intarsia so as to not have a hole in the finished work.

5 out of 5 stars Must have book for knitters.......2007-01-18

Volume three of the Vogue series is just as great as the first two. Clear, well written instructions make these books a must have to any knitters book collection.

4 out of 5 stars Color is the thing ..........2006-11-30

Collecting together more than 200 color knitting patterns from the pages of Vogue Knitting magazine, Color Knitting is the third volume in the Vogue Knitting Stitchionary series. Calling these volumes the "ultimate stitch dictionary," the editors of Vogue Knitting magazine have selected a range of designs sure to challenge and inspire knitters of all skill levels. For each pattern, a large sample swatch is shown; some in quite unusual color choices.

Color Knitting is made up of five chapters: Two Color, Fair Isle/Multicolor,
Intarsia/Motifs, Adding Texture, and Slip Stitch. In each chapter the patterns are organized from easiest to hardest. The patterns in the first three chapters are presented as graphs only. The final two sections, which incorporate both stitch patterns as well as color, are presented with both charts and written instructions.

Color, perhaps more than any other element of design, is subjective. Everyone has preferred colors, and the colors in which a design is shown can lead one to reject it without assessing the pattern itself. To provide an overall flow to the stitch dictionary, the editors have presented each chapter in a different palette. For this to be a useful volume, knitters must use it as a starting point, find their own preferred color scheme and be creative.

5 out of 5 stars Like this book.......2007-01-19

Vogue did a little better than vol 1, this book does have charts. The book is well organized. I also like that each chart or pattern having abbreviations, has the instructions for those stitch abbreviations on the same page as the swatch. (Unlike Knitters Magazine and their books which generally have these at the back of the book in the glossary section.)

All three volumes in this series could be improved with the addition of a index with thumbnail pictures.

Overall, I'm happy with this as a reference.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful but..........2007-01-10

beautiful book, the swatches look good enough to eat. just one problem [ with this volume and the other two in the series]: NO INDEX!!!! not even a list of the patterns by name. just very broad chapter headings. if the publishers had added a dozen pages to the front of the books, with thumbnails of the swatches, life would be so much easier. After I've drooled over it thoroughly once, I might just want to go right to that cable that looked like little ripples, but not want to have to go through every page to find it.[oh, and they seem to have forgotten the swatch for #186: Sleeping Beauty: my book has a large blank spot on the page].

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book 2!.......2007-01-10

Vogue continues along the great tradition of providing the information one needs, and desires. Each picture is very well photographed, and detailed. The stitches show up very clearly enabling the reader to see what she wants. The stitch discription is very clear with all the information one would need to accomplish the stitch he or she wants. Wonderful presentation, awesome instructions, a book to add to any knitters library!

1 out of 5 stars Excellent; beyond the basics.......2007-01-04

I just had my first extended browse through here. It's laid out well, and the photography is very good.

It's an excellent book for not only instruction, but inspiration as well. And...the back page on yarn overs is worth the entire purchase price for anyone with Yarn Over Phobia (me).

This is the first Vogue knitting book I have bought, but it will not be the last.

5 out of 5 stars Must have cable collection.......2006-08-21

Even though you have several collections of cable patterns, this volume is well worth the price. It has cable patterns that I have found no where else. I'll use it a lot.

Vogue Knitting: The Ultimate Knitting Book
This is an excellent knitting guide. I took an intermediate class and my knitting instructor recommended this book and it was excellent in it's instruction and pictures.

4 out of 5 stars Reference Book for serious knitters.......2007-08-24

If you love knitting this is an excellent addition to your library. The book is beautifully laid out and wide-ranging. The introductory history of knitting section is particularly interesting. There isn't an area of knitting that it doesn't touch on. However, if there is an area of knitting--e.g. knitting in the round--that you want to explore in depth, you'll have to go to another book.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one.......2007-08-03

Of all the knitting resources I have, this is the most comprehensive.
A very good investment for knitters of any level.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect reference.......2007-07-12

This is a must in my knitting library. I checked out the previous edition from the library and was hooked. I refer to it as needed.

4 out of 5 stars Basics.......2007-07-07

A nice book with basic instructions on cast on, bind off, increase, decrease, etc. The patterns are not so great, you can find nicer ones in other books (Barbara Walker's, for instance). Not much about finishings... Might be a disappointment for experienced knitter.

4 out of 5 stars Good Basic Reference.......2007-08-19

This book is a good reference for the basics. There are other books that will fit into your knitting bag that provide much more information. This one is a good basic "how-to" that has been invaluable to me as a novice knitter. I particularly like that it will lay flat when opened.

Again, this is a great basic reference book and it has been very useful to me. As my skills have improved, I have found other books that provide more information but I still come back to this one because of its easy-to-understand format.

4 out of 5 stars Portable is right.......2007-05-14

I bought this book to be a major reference book for my knitting library. The book's advantages are the sprial-binding, which allows it to stay open and easily accessed even while your hands are full with your knitting, and the book is thin and light, which is perfect for adding it to your knitting bag. A con is a lot of the more advanced techniques are taken out (compared to the complete Vogue Knitting Reference book). Since I plan on using this book mostly at home, I'm now kicking myself for not buying the more complete knitting reference book. I would suggest buying the other one if you plan on keeping this book at home and not carry it around in your knitting bag.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-05-18

I got this book as a birthday present and couldn't be more pleased. I taught myself how to knit and this book has helped me refine my skills without have a large book to carry around. I am hoping to get the big Vogue book soon but this has been great.

5 out of 5 stars Happy Knitting.......2006-03-09

I bought this because I wanted diagrams of how to KFB and SSK. At first I did not like that the diagrams are not directly correlated to the standard abbreviations (instead there is a section on increasing and the various methods, decreasing and the various methods etc...). However, now that I am used to it, it is very helpful. It may not be a good book for an a beginner to start with, but once you are beyond the basics it is good. It is one of the few books that is straight forward, no frills, and covers basic technique clearly with NO useless little cute projects (a plus in my opinion because there are so many other great books for that). I would have like more on knitting in the round, especially with color, but I think that would be rare to find in any book. :)

4 out of 5 stars good LITTLE refernce book.......2005-12-28

It is what it claims, a good little quick reference book to fit in your knitting bag. However, if you need more, the exact same content down to the grafics, photos and text can be found in the older version of "Vogue Knitting the ultimate kitting book" isbn 0-394-57186-X (blue hardcover) which has a lot more information and it is easier to read, because the pictures and text are larger. It is also priced well and available used.
I wish I would have found that one first and I could have saved the money for the little book, since I do not really need a little book to fit in my knitting bag and have trouble reading the small print. The big book also has a few patterns in the back and a lot more helpful information like knitting on the round and designing a pattern.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars lots of detail work.......2007-07-12

The two bags by Margery Winter are worth the price of the book. One is a freeform bag with lots of added knit flowers. The second is Boho and looks kind of old fashioned but very interesting. Why did they use this ugly orange bag for the cover? There's a nice little water bottle bag, a very pretty slip stitch shoulder bag. The wavy bag pattern is nice. Pink evening bag seems very involved to make but is quite attractive. The woven messenger bag is another nice one. Nice cabled tote with i-cord handles. Two backpacks, one for a child. If you like to felt there are six of them out of the twentyfive. Some projects add embroidery or beads. Most of the handles are to be purchased. Linings use the finished bag as a template which I find difficult. Not for the knitter in a hurry. Recommended if you buy all the bag books and like to do the fussy stuff.

Book Description

With over 200 Vogue and Glamour covers to his credit and 30,000 photos in archive, John Rawlings (1921-1970) immortalized the era in which American fashion and style truly came into their own. During his three-decade affiliation with Conde Nast, Rawlings's work paralleled his publishers' and editors' efforts to reformat and expand the power and scope of the fashion press. Rawlings was in the elite circle of Irving Penn, Horst P. Horst, George Hoyningen-Huene, and George Platt Lynes, all top Vogue photographers, yet never received the kind of attention lauded on his colleagues — until now. Drawing on the photographer's recently rediscovered archive, curator Kohle Yohannan presents glamour portraits as well as never-before-published nudes that testify to the artist's ground-breaking and compelling body of work. Photographs of stage, screen, and society stars of the 1940s and 1950s, including Marlene Dietrich, Salvador Dali, Veronica Lake, Lena Horne, and Montgomery Clift are featured.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great collection from a master fashion photographer!.......2002-08-28

This collection brings together the best images of this photographer. His work stands out from his contemporaries with thier unique, groundbreaking style. You can tell he inspired people like Avedon. His work is timeless, not date at all. If you like fashion photography from the mid-twentieth century, you'll love this book!

5 out of 5 stars Out of Darkness and Shadows into the Light!.......2001-06-03

Before commenting on this book, you should be aware that it contains many nude images that would be "R" rated if they were contained in a motion picture.

John Rawlings took fashion photography in a whole new direction. In the 1930s when he began, the predominate style used lots of shadow and darkness to present a sense of haunting mystery. That style was also great for covering up flaws in the subject. Around 1940, John Rawlings began creating fascinating modern fashion shots that look like they might have been made just yesterday. In these images, he makes light, reflections, and color even more interesting than the darkness and shadow ever were in black-and-white. In doing so, he is remarkably effective in "keeping the photographer out of the picture."

His career was a most distinguished and prolific one. Mr. Rawlings was responsible for over 200 covers of Vogue and Glamour. These images captured a unique "chic sophistication" that you will recognize and appreciate seeing again. He also produced a series of famous Clairol ads, and published two books of nudes (some of which are reproduced here). He is one of the rare photographers from that period who was top-notch in both black-and-white and color.

Some of his best work involved making cigarette smoking by women seem more glamorous. It was hard for me not to wince which I saw those photographs.

The book opens with a poem that reflects the work published here:

"At just that crux of time when she is made

So beautiful that she or time must fade."

In the case of many of these works, it is hard to avoid feeling that time faded rather than the images of the women. The photography moves beyond the styles of the day into a timeless sense of beauty and culture.

The images are well chosen to be appealing to an audience today. The quality of paper and reproduction are both superb. The essays and background material are excellent.

....

After you have enjoyed these images, think about the meaning you attribute to the poses these women assume. What are they thinking? How much of a role do you think they played in selecting the poses? What is sophistication in fashion? Mr. Rawlings's impressive work will undoubtedly give you new dimensions for answering these questions.

Let the light show you the way!

5 out of 5 stars John Rawlings.......2001-05-11

I was very impressed by the high quality of this book. It is very well edited and the choice of pictures is just right! You can tell that the author did a lot of research and was able to come up with interesting facts about John Rawlings the man and the photographer. I also enjoyed very much reading about the innovative photographic techniques that Rawlings used. This book is certainly a lesson to all photographers and anyone who is sensitive to beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Elegant, refined style.......2001-05-09

This book is a retrospective collection of the work of a leading commercial photographer active from the late 1930's to the mid 1960's. Most of the pictures are fashion photos, some are Hollywood celebrity portraits, and there are nude figure studies as well. I think the fashion photos are the best part. They are exquisite. The majority were taken from the late 1940's through the decade of the 1950's, which will give you an idea of the style of the clothes and photography (extremely elegant on both counts). Both B&W and color photos are included. The color plates have a lovely unsaturated look (no Velvia used here). The dust jacket photo is from a 1947 Vogue cover.

Those who are looking for classic photography and elegant style will not be disappointed - this is a great book.

2 out of 5 stars Some of the Styles are not Vogue.......2006-07-06

I was left wanting a little more after getting this book. You would think a Vogue book would have up to date styles. I found a lot of the patterns dated and even kind of ugly. I wouldn't spend my valuable time knitting something that I wouldn't want to wear myself.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Newer Knitters.......2003-08-22

This book is full of patterns using todays thicker yarns - great for quick projects. I knit a floor-length hooded vest in a weekend!
Although some of the patterns are a bit outdated, you can easily adapt them for todays styles (i.e. shorten up the length of the pullovers and add bell sleeves).
There is a wide variety of patterns, from sweaters to shawls to evening wear.
Some experience required - as there is shaping involved.
