A book to have.......2007-08-11
This is a must have book, well written coincised, straight to the point and good for medical students, residents and attendings interested in dermatology.
Quick reference.......2007-05-07
Quick and assured reference for everyday use in dermatology clinic. However, does not substitute Fitzpatrick's 2 vol. compendium if you're looking to broaden your knowledge in the area.
Excellent.......2007-03-09
Items arrived very very fast and in excellent condition. I have saved at least 30 $.
The only derm reference I needed for PA school........2006-11-11
This is a fantastic reference for PA school, NP programs, or medical school. Clear, detailed photos along with differential dx, labs, treatments, etc. The only reference I used for my derm course in PA school.
Fitzpatrick's Color Atlas & Synopsis of Dermatology.......2006-11-05
The pictures are so clear, it really helps to identify and recognize the skin disorders explained. Clearly written and easy to reference.

Very helpful.......2007-09-25
I agree with the other 5 star reviews. The only thing I'd like to add is part of the foreword by Gerald Bybee:
"If you're looking for pointers on shooting nudes or tutorials on photographing sexy models in the desert, this book is not for you. There is already a plethora of those pseudo-technical books explointing the throngs of photo voyeurs. Lee isn't about exploitation of our society's fascination with naked skin. Lee's fascination is simply with digital imaging technique focused on the practical application of photographing people, who coincidentally are primarily dermal by nature."
If you are like me and don't want a book full of nude models sitting around the house, then don't let this book's title keep you from buying it. There is a thumbnail of the most nude picture in the book on the cover (3rd down on the left side) and is the image of a woman's back. Lee Varis does a good job of talking about and showing examples of skin without including pictures you may not want your children seeing.
great book.......2007-09-24
Great book mostly for post processing in photoshop. Espesially about how to treat skincolor. Also a littel bit of how to light. Many usable photoshop techniques. Just get it!
EXCELLENT book.......2007-09-07
One of the most focused books on lighting and Photoshopping people I have ever read - it's very advanced, but well explained. This book will help you push yourself when it comes to this subject. Refreshing and different approach in his writing.
the book is great.......2007-09-05
The book is very helpful. The book is based on Photoshop CS2, so if you're like me and still using CS, some of the tutorials won't work.
A good read.......2007-09-05
I can say I am happy with the book for the price I paid ($23) It is not worth the full retail for myself (newbies will get a lot more out of it) I was hoping it would go into more detail with making correct skin tones, it is sadly only a chapter long, but is a great chapter. The retouching chapter is ok but not for high end retouching, Katrin Eismanns book on retouching (3rd edition) has a lot of great "high end" pore by pore retouching techniques, the ones in this book are good for quick portrait retouches, also a great section for tattoo's and even applying tattoos to the skin. All in all its a good book just don't expect a ton of advanced techniques.

Book Description
A freak storm has spawned three tornadoes that are bearing down on the town of Summerville.
Yet under the cover of the storm looms a much more ominous threat: A vindictive killer known as Red who's left a string of victims in his wake and is now bent on exacting his final revenge on the unsuspecting town.
But there is an enigma surrounding Red that the FBI is unwilling to admit-closely guarded secrets of something gone terribly wrong beneath the skin of Summerville. Secrets that will destroy far more than one small town.
Wendy Davidson is caught in the middle. She's a recovering cult survivor who takes refuge in Summerville on her way to visit her estranged mother. And with her, four strangers, any of whom could be the next victim . . . or the killer.

Sadly disappointed.......2007-09-26
I'm a HUGE Ted Dekker fan...I own at least one copy of every book to date...and I've recommended his books to many people to find they enjoy his books very much as well. When "Skin" came out, I rushed to the bookstore and purchased it immediately. Unfortunately, it was a let-down. The book was sometimes even a struggle to read, unlike his others, and I was utterly disappointed at the end. In reading the other reviews of "Skin," I'm apparently not alone. What happened to the Ted Dekker whose books left us with such an impact and new insight into this life we live and the God we serve? "Skin" seemed to continue down a trend of "secular" writing in the name of creativity, rather than the impactful, spiritually relevant writing of "The Circle Trilogy," "Blink," and others.
So here's to hoping the path turns back toward the fruitful and potentially life-affecting books that we all know 'could' continue to hit the press. Ultimately, the fruit is what is most valuable, not the entertainment value anyhow. Please, Ted...
Dissapointing.......2007-08-27
I grew up on Stephen King and Den koontz... but lately have been attempting to not fill my mind with too much wordly garbage (which King can do...) so I took a friend's advise and turned to Dekker. His book Showdown was excellent and House was very good as well. SKIN.... not so much. I ready it very quickly, and at first was drawn into the story... but it is a letdown. The dialouge was cheesy, the storyline confusing, and the ending predictable. I will give Mr. Dekker's next novel a chance but if it reflect anything seen in SKIN then I will have to find my "horror" book fix elsewhere.
Some good material for a much shorter story.......2007-08-14
Normally I am a big fan of the creative Mr Dekker. However, I almost gave up on this one twice and only hung in there to the end to see what kind of twist he would produce this time. Indeed there was one, at about the 3/4 point - a good one - but with some big logic holes still left in it. Without the twist, this was a 2 star at the best, full of lame, immature, repetitive, weak dialog, strung together with cliches. A good hard nosed editor most likely could have turned this embarrassment into a very good short story. Hopefully I am wrong, and other Dekker fans will love it. However, I may skip a couple of the next ones hoping he will eventually get back into the form evidenced in Thr3e, Blink, and the trilogy. In the meantime, I hope he reads more Koontz and absorbs some of Dean's snappy dialog.
Big Disappointment.......2007-08-07
I must join the others who've said that this book was a big disappointment. It took me much longer than normal to read through it because it just was not all that interesting. When I finally did finish it, I was left wondering what the point was. I am a mature Christian but if there is some deep spiritual truth to be gleaned from this work of fiction, it sure has eluded me.
I have not been all that impressed with his most recent novels but this one was the most disappointing. I see a trend here that I don't like. I hope Ted can refresh his ideas and get back on track to writing novels like "Blink".
Another Masterfully Written Parable.......2007-07-18
Another well done Dekker thriller! Dekker is a very interesting writer for several reasons, but one of the most unique things about his writing is the way it evolves so rapidly from one novel to the next. I never know what to expect!
That was especially true with Skin. It just didn't go the way I expected. For starters, I was pleasantly surprised because the book description makes it sound like a rehashing of House, a novel that Dekker recently co-authored with Frank Peretti. I liked House, but I wanted Skin to be its own novel. It definitely was.
The story begins with five strangers thrown together in a small town through highly unusual circumstances. In the midst of a massive storm, a serial killer strikes-and keeps striking. For some unknown reason, he begins targeting this group of five and draws them into a twisted homicidal mind game.
That would be enough groundwork for a thriller, but Dekker takes it further: reality itself seems to begin playing games with these five young men and women as the story takes on a Twilight Zone quality. As the truth gradually reveals itself, we discover along with the characters that real truth lies just beyond the skin of this world.
One of the best things I like about Dekker is that he's a master teller of modern-day parables. That's really what his stories-especially the ones from the past two or three years, which are quite distinct from his earlier novels-are: parables.
I'd definitely recommend Skin, but with a strong warning: it is not for the faint of heart! The violence in the book would make it difficult for a movie version to escape with anything less than an R rating. But if you can stomach that (it's gross and violent, but not excessively graphic), you might find Skin to be one of those novels that genuinely affects the way you perceive the world around you... and the world within you.
Book Description
The second edition of this thorough reference is an invaluable tool for assessing cosmetic products, addressing both the quality of the product and the effect it has on the skin. Since a product's ultimate purpose is to benefit the skin, it is crucial to have an understanding of how the skin works, how and why a product may or may not penetrate it, and what care individual skin types and conditions may require. It is difficult to discuss product ingredients without correlating product performance to skin function. An expanded section on skin physiology and chemical concepts enables the reader to better understand product performance through a thorough explanation of how chemicals and ingredients interact. The various skin types, conditions, and appropriate ingredients for treatments provide a quick reference to address clients' needs. This enlarged second edition contains over 2,000 ingredients including 200 new and updated entries. Expanded information on antioxidants and their stability, new discussion on aging and sensitive skin, and function of SPF and new sunblock ingredients offering full spectrum sunscreen and sunblock for both UVA and UVB rays has been added.
Customer Reviews:
Overpriced .......2007-09-18
There was very little that I found in this book that I didn't find in other resources on the subject. It's way overpriced for what it delivers.
Milady's Cosmetic Ingredients Dictionary.......2007-06-27
In addition to listing many standard ingredients, this book also lists botanicals which are listed by their English name with other common names listed right after. And they are cross-referenced. A very good brief review of skin physiology, function, components, structures and layers along with product penetration and testing and skin types and conditions enhance the book. Great for newbies or experienced skin care professionals.
Terrific Resource.......2005-10-17
The beauty business is wonderful, really it is. There are only a very few players that are truely dishonest when it comes to ingredients, for instance, "renaming" common ingredients. This book will help everyone keep it straight. As a beauty and lifestyle reporter, I keep it on my desk.
FANTASTIC REFERENCE.......2005-10-10
I am currently studying beauty therapy and this book is my lifesaver! it is great for reference, general knowledge etc!
Not to bad.......2005-09-13
The first few chapters I would call "Skin physiology for dummies", the science is much simplified, so don't expect to learn much here. However, the glossary of cosmetic ingredients is very decent, I would definatelly buy this book as a great reference.
Book Description
Now in its' ninth edition, Milady's Standard Textbook for Professional Estheticians has been thoroughly revised to include the most up-to-date information available today. Written by Joel Gerson, one of the industry's top authorities on skin care, and Alison O'Neil, a leading expert in the medical esthetics arena, this updated text contains all the essential information needed to ensure greater success for students taking the state board examinations. For the first time, this text is presented in full-color, incorporating a brand new, user-friendly four-color design that will help students learn the common links between the concepts and principles of skin care. Over 500 new full-color photographs and illustrations support the text content and include new step-by-step photographs for many of the procedures presented. All new photos have been incorporated in the chapter on skin disorders and diseases, special esthetic procedures, client consultation and skin analysis, and color theory and cosmetic techniques. A running glossary in each chapter helps the student become familiar with the language of skin care, and procedural notes and safety tips help to reinforce concepts. Expanded discussion on safety and sanitation topics reflects changes made in OSHA rulings and decontamination and infection control. Added discussion on advanced topics including AHAs, BHAs, glycolic, and microdermabrasion techniques give students exposure to those skills that will make them more marketable. Milady's Standard Textbook for Professional Estheticians, 9th ed., is the essential textbook for basic esthetics training.
Customer Reviews:
No Excuses For Milady.......2007-03-12
As this is the ninth edition of what is alledgedly the most widely used text for beginning estheticians, then the persistent use of mediocre-to-poor science is inexcusable. Doesn't the author consult *anyone* in the scientific/medical community before sending this thing off to the printers? It is *not*, for instance, an established fact that vitamin A protects human beings from cancer of any sort. There is certainly data that looks promising, but that's it. And since vitamin K is manufactured in the intestinal tract, why is paper wasted insisting that students, many of them fresh out of high school, should be memorizing the names of the food sources of this abundant nutrient? Many of these kids struggle with the science that *is* relevent to the profession they hope to enter. My husband is a doctor, I'm an RN, and neither of us has ever used the term "non-striated" muscle. It's "smooth" muscle, for crying out loud! And while I'm on the subject of muscles, absolutely none - not one - healthcare professional I'm acquainted with has ever learned anything about the "belly" of the muscle! No matter - 18 year-old kids have to learn what is not required of first-year medical students. Please. Yes, as a basic introductory text it has much to recommend it; all the more reason to get the science right. S.T., RN, Rochester, NY
Better textbook than prior years.......2005-09-29
This is for esthetician students. The information is basic and well organized. The photos sometimes do not follow the text but it reads easily.
This is a good all around Beauty School book.......2005-08-21
Most of the chapters are well written and understandable. I have found some discrepancies in the information, and feel that the book could have been edited a little better. The book explains sanitation but does not go into the correct method of sanitizing all items that one would use during a service. The material is quite dry, and could really use something to get the student excited about the occupation that they have chosen.

A great book.......2007-07-16
This is a must have for all dermatologists. This book is small in size, but massive in content. I have always said, "If it ain't in Andrews', it ain't worth knowing." and this is still true of this version. This edition has great color pictures (although I always thought that the B&W photos in the previous editions were so terrific that you could still "see" the color in them.). This is another book that you really shouldn't be without whether you are a resident or practicing dermatologist.
A Great Dermatology Text.......2007-06-15
This is a must have book for non-dermatologists and dermatologists alike. This text has replaced Habif as the traditional textbook for non-dermatologists, because of its concise straightforward approach to dermatology, making it easily understood by the non-dermatologist. For the dermatologist, it is simple to read, but not lacking in depth, such that it can serve as the main textbook for refreshing the information learned during residency without getting bogged down with useless minutia. I use this as the textbook of choice on a daily basis.
alex em dept.......2006-11-10
one of the best dermo books i've read but.... a little gap: the work lacking a chapter concerning burn care. i think this items it's very important for a modern dermatology.
so, I regret to give only 4 stars, taking in account that the chapters of the book are concise, well done, showing the best practical approach, in comparison to other dermo text bks.
EXCELLENT NEW EDITION.......2006-07-18
Forget the hype about Bolognia, this is the best book on clinical dermatology out there today. Written by three of the top clinical dermatologists in the country, there is a unity of writing and approach and and a consistent high quality level that you don't get with texts with hundreds of co-authors (many of whom are in training themselves). There is also a refreshing aspect that this book is written for practicing dermatologists and avoids much of the incomprehensibility of so-called academic dermatology texts. Andrews is much improved over the last edition with color photos and the input from Dirk Elston, one of the most prolific dermatogists in the country. This is the one book EVERY dermatologist should have on his desk.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing.......2007-10-02
I cannot say enough. After chemo my always previously youthful over 55 skin had sagged, bagged and wrinkled to a disappointing degree. I could not believe that just 7 days could possibly make a difference, but I had to try it. All I can say is "WOW"! My jaw line is firmer than ever and those awful new wrinkles are a lot less defined. I also love that now I can express myself in so many new ways, or had forgotten, because I am in touch with my face from the inside!
Very Good!.......2007-09-24
This book is really good. I've been practicing the exercises for 10 days, and I can really see a difference. The overall look of my skin has improved. My face looks less tired and with a nice glow.
The only thing that could be improved about the book is the explanations. Sometimes you can get confused as how to perform the movement correctly.
Still, my opinion about the exercises is very positive. I highly recommend facercise.
Outstanding.......2007-09-21
HI! This is Tree Feller's Office Manager: Carole Maggio is a genius with an unfailing sense of perspective and very funny all at once. The exercises work to produce the desired results. Extremely useful after chemo therapy when everything seems to sag prematurely and you want to be happy about your situation, but your face is, well, hanging down. I think I will keep this up for ever, since, I seem to be getting results on droopy areas that seem to run in the family... i.e., these were'nt exactly new, but they sure have improved to better than before! Very exciting. Thanks so much to Carole for making faces in front of a camera so the rest of us could benefit. Oh, and pay close attention to those pictures... her example may take more mind over matter than it seems after the beginner's luck, honeymoon phase passes. Again, she is a genius!
WOW-Facercise is the Fountain of Youth in a Book.......2007-06-20
The thrill of being in control of your appearance and not subject to time is the gift of knowledge that Carole Maggio gives every dedicated student in this book. I saw results in a couple of days, first as my eyes widened and next my chin line began to firm, all this and much more happened within the first 5 days. As I continued to do the Facercise Exercises my face continued to firm, tone and take on a more radiant appearance. I also had TMJ before using these exercises, that is now gone.
The exercises are clear, concise and easy o follow. Carole is straight forward and helps you cut the time down it takes to do the exercises with her tips. I have also used Carole's other products-DVD's, CD's and her skin care products--which have helped my skin even more. Like the exercises they are targeted and precise, so you use only a few products to have good skin without spending a fortune. With Facercise there is NO NEED for surgery, ever!
My next step is to get a privae lesson designed just for me -on the exercises-with Carole or one of the individuals she has trained that are in different cities around the country, even in Hawaii. This will take me to the next level, so I can build on what I have learned in the Facercise Book.
Carole Maggio Facercise: The Dynamic Muscle-Toning Program for Renewed Vitality and a More Youthful Appearance (Revised, Updated)
Thank goodness for this Wonderful Book,it has shown me that I am in control over my looks and that I can "bend time the other way"!
non-surgical facelift.......2007-05-16
It makes sense. Just as you need to exercise the rest of your body, you need to exercise the face to keep the muscles toned like when you were young. Carole shows you how. Why go through the trauma and danger of surgery when you can tone you face naturally? An excellent book!

Disappointed.......2005-04-04
I guess I should have read the review of this 'new release' of an older (2) novel(s).
I love Nora Roberts, but she's so much better than this now! I've grown with her over the years and was a little disappointed that I fell for the new cover, thinking a new book. A waste of money for any Nora Roberts fan.
