never received it.......2005-09-18
Ordered this book a few weeks ago. Never received it. Had to go purchase a new copy at much greater expense.
Book Description
In his popular Never Coming to a Theater Near You, Kenneth Turan celebrated the great films that you may have missed because they never got the screen time they deserved in a blockbuster-dominated culture. Now Turan tells fans of these smaller, lesser-known films what big studio successes they shouldn't neglect. Now in Theaters Everywhere collects Turan's illuminating reviews of the smart and satisfying films you may have underestimated precisely because they dominated the box office.
As independent films like Sideways and Brokeback Mountain become increasingly mainstream, sophisticated moviegoers tend to dismiss everything Hollywood produces as merely blockbusters or crowd pleasers. True, not every blockbuster is worth your while. But the studios produce more than cinematic fast food, and Turan will turn you on to big-budget movies that supply real sustenance. His collection of close to 150 reviews defends these cinematic pleasures, pointing readers to the thought-provoking bigger films they may have skipped. Most importantly, he shows readers what makes these films so great, and tells us why we may have to venture no farther than the megaplex for a movie that's worth seeing.

A Celebration of the Blockbuster.......2006-12-10
My first introduction to Kenneth Turan was NEVER COMING TO A THEATER NEAR YOU, a book that contained reviews of independent and art house films that are of merit, but never hit blockbuster status. My hunch is that many of those who read the book soon went to video stores or Netflix and viewed some of the great films he recommended. Since he's a critic for a major newspaper, he sees more than just the small art house films. More than likely he's paid to review the films most people see in theaters and I'm sure he sees more than his share of the good, the bad, and ugly (borrowing from the movie title). In his latest work NOW IN THEATERS EVERYWHERE he uses the same format he used in his earlier book but examines films that have been successful in theaters and have qualities that make them both entertaining and worthwhile as art.
Turan's purpose in writing this book is interesting. He admits he loves smaller independent films, but he's sees a trend happening. These independent films, thought by many to be disappearing, are on the increase, and large Hollywood studio films are getting so expensive. Combine expense with changes in viewing habits, and there's a danger that fewer will be made. He also wanted to pay tribute to films that sometimes get snubbed at awards ceremonies simply because they are products of Hollywood, his case in point being the critically acclaimed and very popular film directed by Clint Eastwood MYSTIC RIVER.
The book is divided into five categories: action/adventure, comedy, drama/romance, animation, and spectacle. His choices include some of the most popular films of recent years: SCHINDLER'S LIST, THELMA AND LOUISE, FINDING NEMO, MILLION DOLLAR BABY, SPEED, and TOY STORY. There are some interesting omissions: FOREST GUMP, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, and TITANIC to name three. He also includes a number of films that don't normally make the best of lists, but are loved by audiences such as the remake of THE PARENT TRAP, THE ROOKIE, and SISTER ACT. Each film he includes has a review and reasons why he sees it as a good work.
This is the perfect book for a film lover. There are some many guides with basic summaries available; having a book that has content about great movies is a great find for anyone who loves film. People will agree and disagree with his choices and reasons for including a particular film, but no one will question his love for movies of all types.
If you're a movie lover!.......2006-10-15
This book is a companion book to the 2004 Never Coming to a Theatre Near You: A Celebration of Certain Kind of Movie. Author and bestselling film critic Kenneth Turan profiles "intelligent" and original "big-budget" Hollywood films that sophisticated moviegoers may have missed--or dismissed simply because there were made in Hollywood.
Dividing movies into several categories: Action/Thriller, Comedy, Drama/Romance, Animation and Spectacle, he details why these movies should be seen by people who care about "intelligent entertainment."
I was pleased to see that a few my favorites were included--movies that I actually took the time to go see in the theatre, vs. waiting for the home versions. I love when I stumble onto a "sleeper," that's good enough for me to tell everyone, and if it starred my favorite actor, Kevin Kline, as in DAVE, all the better.
The book started with explaining why when the sci-fi "art film" Blade Runner was first introduced in 1981, it didn't do that well. And of course it didn't help that ET was introduced a month earlier (it grossed $300 million). In 1989 someone found an old version and it was re-released in fall 1991 in art theatres to great attendance.
Turan lists 32 thrillers, stating that Hollywood still knows how to make thrillers like Oceans Eleven, The Manchurian Candidate (both original and sequels). These kinds of movies translate well whether in the US or Japan, giving them global appeal.
He lists 22 comedies. Critically successful comedies are surprisingly too rare. Why? Comedy (and horror) are geared to the tastes of under and 25 set of moviegoers. He lists American Pie, Clueless, School of Rock and Spy Kids--movies that were not placed in a high school, done with gifted actors who could sometimes make unlikely material funny: Jim Carrey, Hugh Grant, Eddie Murphy, Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Whoopie Goldberg, Cameron Diaz, Will Ferrell and Will
Smith.
In the Drama/Romance category Turan lists 35 movies. Many selected in the drama category also had a romantic aspect--as if they think we don't want drama without romance to soften it.
Armchair Interview says: If you are a movie lover, you'll find this very interesting. If you wonder if there are still movies worth your time and money, his insights may change your mind.

Great Reference.......2002-12-29
I bought this when we first moved to the West, so I would sound like a local! It's a great reference book, and explains the differences between vaqueros, cowboys, cowpunchers, and buckaroos. A fun read.

Cute book for the novice cowboy and cowgirl--entertaining reading for the "real thing". Well written and technically correct--great pictures and illustrations. Obviously written by one who knows the cowboy way. Highly recommended!
Book Description
Due to popular demand, this extraordinary book project by Damien Hirst is now available in a reduced format. This dynamic and provocative collection of Hirst's ideas and obsessions is a powerful combination of text and visual elements. Each piece is set against a visual narrative of drawings, words, photography, typography, pop-ups, and other special effects that make this book like no other. An essay by cult novelist Gordon Burn looks at Hirst's work and the breadth of its impact. Designed by Jonathan Barnbrook, this is a landmark publication that has redefined the fine art monograph. AUTHOR BIO: Damien Hirst was born in Bristol and studied fine art at Goldsmiths College in London. In 1995, he won the prestigious Turner Prize. He has had recent solo exhibitions at the White Cube, London; the Marble Palace, Russia; Saatchi Gallery, London; Gagosian Gallery, New York; and Tate Gallery, London. Gordon Burn is an award-winning writer of both fiction and nonfiction. His book of interviews with Damien Hirst, On the Way to Work, was published in 2002.
Customer Reviews:
this book is a masterpiece by Hirst and Barnbrook.......2000-11-23
What a tour de force! This is one of the most beautifully designed books money can buy. Jonathan Barnbrook created (together with Damien Hirst) a timeless masterpiece of book design. If you want to see what is possible in this medium, you want to own this book. It is hauntingly beautiful, filled with amazing interactive pieces bringing you as close to Hirst's thinking and work as printed matter can get you.
What you are about to experience is a superbly intelligent visual introduction ot Hirst's process united with breathtaking depictions of the results.
A tiny note for the "practical book-user": This book is a work of Damien Hirst's. In such a publication one should not be surprised to find "safety guidlines" on how to successfully "deal with one's own life" - by using a gun. Gun owners might think twice before showing this book to their loved ones. Yet that's another story. Or maybe not, from Hirst's point of view? :*)
The Daring Realm of Damien Hirst.......2000-10-27
Damien Hirst is one of the most creative and influential contemporary artists. This is a wonderful book that examines the whole of Damien Hirst's career and all of his beautifully shcoking ideas. This book itself is an amazing work of art. It contains not only many wonderful full color panels, but it has all kinds of extremely interesting interactive pages that mimic some of Hirst's work. I highly suggest this wonderful book that does justice to this incredible artist.

One cool kitty-cat.......2007-09-25
I always fancied Hello Kitty, and my 2-year-old daughter loves cats. So I knew she'd be a big fan of the colorful, whimsical images in this hardcover book. (She also has a habit of tearing colorful pages out of books, but so far I've been able to keep this one intact!) This is really more of a "big girl's" book because of the silly haikus that correspond with the images, but it sure is fun to flip through. Le chat en France? Mais oui!
Not bad....................2007-01-09
Charming and very 'fluffy', its what you would expect ! Aimed more for the younger Kitty fan, its basically nothing more than a selection of cute kitty photos, but good fun.

"We often hear that Christianity relates to all of life. All of life? Would that include e-mail? DNA? T-Ball? April Fool's Day?"From the foreword by Gene Veith
These topics and more are treated by Philip Ryken, who turns them into meditations on living the Christian life in a culture that has forgotten God, even though he rules just the same. This companion volume to My Father's World explores the areas of politics, marriage, the arts, science, and many others. These fifty short meditations will help readers make sense of our culture and apply a Christian worldview to whatever issues and circumstances they may face.

Practical Theology.......2005-07-02
A friend of mine, who is far more qualified than I am to make such judgments, tells me that Philip Ryken is among the top two or three preachers in the world today. That is quite a claim, but one I am more willing to believe as I continue to read Ryken's work. Until a few weeks ago I knew little about the man, having encountered him only as co-author of a book he wrote with James Boice. But then I read his book City on a Hill and so enjoyed it that I almost immediately turned to He Speaks to me Everywhere.
During evening services at the church he pastors, Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ryken delivers not only a sermon, but also a short cultural reflection. He Speaks to me Everywhere is a compilation of fifty of these commentaries divided into nine broad categories. Topics range from Muslim dress code, to pressing theological errors of our time; from sports and recreation to the acts of terrorism on September 11th; from the Church Mothers to Intelligent Design. These commentaries show a man who knows the issues that people in our culture, believer and unbeliever alike, struggle to understand.
A pastor who is wholly disconnected from our culture (and I have known many who are) will have less to offer our world than one who heeds the admonition I have heard attributed to many pastors or theologians - that a good pastor keeps the Bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other. I once sat through a sermon where the pastor lamented the state of the church, exclaiming that now "even the church has its own rocks and its own rolls." It is sad when Christians keep themselves so far removed from the world. A pastor who coaches a team in the community, who keeps up with what is popular in the culture and who knows what people read, watch and listen to, will have a superior ability to build bridges with unbelievers.
But Ryken does not examine culture simply for the sake of keeping up. No, he does so to show that theology is not an obscure, irrelevant pursuit. Instead he shows that the Bible, through which we study God, is relevant to every area of life. Far from being mere personal opinion, these commentaries continually point to the Word of God as the key to understand all that happens in the world around us.
While I do not consider this book required reading, I very much enjoyed it and am happy to recommend it to anyone. It is easy to read and is divided into chapters only two or three pages in length, so can be read in short increments. Ryken provides a great model as to how we, as believers, can be in the world, but never of the world. We can know, understand and appreciate aspects of our culture, while still maintaining strong, biblical standards. And most of all, we can find in the Bible all that is necessary to react to our culture and to stand strong in the faith. This book is practical theology at its strongest.
Great Follow-Up to My Father's World.......2004-12-02
Dr. Ryken is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. As the Senior Pastor of Tenth Presbyterian church in Philadelphia, he is leading a church that is attempting to reach and transform the city in all areas of life based on a Reformed Biblical world-view. This book is the follow up to his "My Father's World: Meditations on Christianity & Culture", and again it is composed of messages he gave during his Sunday evening "Window on the World" talks. He divides the book into sections, focusing on areas such as: Love, Marriage and Family; Sports and Leisure; Science and Technology; Social Issues, Feasts and Festivals; Church History and Christianity Today (to name a few). It is a thoroughly enjoyable book, and I highly recommend it. As you read his musings and reflections on all aspects of life, and then his thoughtful application of Scripture to them, you will hopefully start to see how faith in Christ works through all areas of life. It is my prayer that more and more believers will learn to think biblically, and then to act biblically. If that is a desire of yours, Ryken's work is a great place to start!

Book Description
Marilyn Monroe statuettes, Venus salt-and-pepper shakers, plastic Jesuses, and brides and grooms rescued from the tops of wedding cakes: useless kitsch or important cultural artifacts? The answer depends on your tastes and tendencies. But readers of both camps will find much to ponder in this celebration of the highlights (and low-lights) from the Museum of Corn-temporary Art.
A collaboration between Victor Margolin, one of the most important design historians working today, and Patty Carroll, a photographer of pop culture, this book helps illuminate and challenge the distinctions between high and low art that have troubled museums throughout history. Drawn from Margolin's own substantial collection acquired from souvenir shops, flea markets, and antique stores from around the world, these nearly two hundred common and rare objects are grouped into sections that correspond to his private "museum": souvenirs, decorative art, folk art, commercial art, useful art, icons, and fashion. Each section is introduced by an informative text, and the objects are compellingly displayed with extensive captions. Provocative, ingeniously designed, and fun to peruse, this unusual "exhibition catalog" is a refreshing addition to any art lover's library, as well as to the continuing debate over what constitutes art.
Book Description
Organized by ranking order from Number 1 to Number 100, this illustrated celebration of the best songs by the boys who revolutionized rock-and-roll includes expert commentary, historical context, interview material, and lots of great sidebars (including "best" lists from some of today's pop music powerhouses).
The authors are pop culture experts and lifelong Beatles aficionados whose enlightening commentary sheds new light on the subject. The book is profusely illustrated with great photos of the band at work and play, and all of the memorable album cover art that has come to represent a generation. Appendices include a complete song list, discography, videography, and bibliography, making it a one-stop source of Beatles facts and figures.
Customer Reviews:
Great Read!.......2006-09-23
Don't listen to the completely moronic reviews posted here. This is a great book. The authors have done an excellent job researching, providing insight and giving great technical information about each track. There seems to be a lot of crybabying about certain tracks being left out, certain tracks being listed over others--who the hell cares, it's the f'n Beatles, for crying out loud, every song is great, from Yesterday to A Day in the Life, to Revolution #9. This is a book that the casual listener and the rabid fan will love.
Rating Some Memorable Beatles Music!.......2006-05-09
Anyone daring to rate the "music of the Gods" is setting themselves up for a pasting. Authors Stephen Spignesi and Michael Lewis dared the unthinkable and the results are contained in this interesting book on the "100 Best Beatles Songs."
After an introduction on how they arrived at the top 100 - songwriting, musicianship, production, lyrics - Spignesi and Lewis take us song-by-song through their ranking. Number #1 is "A Day in the Life;" #100, "Helter Skelter." Coverage of each song includes what the song is about, why it made the top 100, interesting facts about the song, what the authors most liked about the song, etc.
So, did all my Beatle favorites make the list? No! Am I cheesed off about the rankings? Not especially! Are some of their statements about what a particular song means pretty obvious or reaching for it? Yup! But so what!?! The authors wrote the book and they're entitled to their opinion.
I enjoyed this book. It takes you down a musical road of wonderful songs - lovely ballads, hard rockers and psychedelic head-trips - that enriched our lives. Reading this book is a fun experience.
Enjoyable, insightful read.......2005-09-26
I guess I'm just not enough of a Beatles snob like some of the other folks reviewing this book. I bought it, read it and enjoyed it. Just because the authors' opinion on the song ranking differs from mine, that doesn't make it a bad book, just a difference in opinion. I glad I bought it.
A great idea for a book wasted.......2005-08-10
As a major Beatles fan, I am a sucker for a book like this. I understand that a book titled the 100 Best whatever is going to be subjective. I don't mind that. (I'm amazed at how many reviewers have criticised this book largely because the authors either included songs the reviewer doesn't like or left out songs the reviewer loves. That's going to happen in any book like this.) However, what we want out of such a book is a critical analysis that true fans can respect. All opinions are not created equal and these two guys have absolutely no meaningful insight into what made Beatles music special.
Perhaps the single greatest indicator as to how fatuous these two guys are is that they attempt to explain what each song is about. They demonstrate that they are either masters of the obvious or as insightful as the average 9th grader. Lyrics that aren't obvious on their face are poetry. If a reviewer has knowledge of first hand experiences that led to the writing of the song or knowledge of allusions in the song, those are worth mentioning. Otherwise, spare us your uninformed "insights." (See their section on the first song, "Day in the Life" for a perfect example.)
The book does have an interesting layout and is easy to skim, and, finally, it is about the Beatles. Hence, it is not worthless, but it is certainly not worth the money. Pass on it.
the worst.......2005-08-06
This is by far the worst book on the beatles i've ever read and i've read almost all of them. All the great songs left out of this book pisses me off! These two guys are idiots, and the're book sucks!
