5 out of 5 stars It took me 3 years to read this wonderful book.......2007-09-12

The words in this book pierced my denial armor. It hurt me so badly to see myself on almost every page, that I could only read a few pages a month. It is the ONLY self-help book (well, besides "The Language of Letting Go") that I own. If you let it, it can help you change your inner self...that's how powerful it is.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-08-30

I bought this book and it basically describes me perfectly! I love this book and it has definitely helped me get over some of the issues I am/was facing.

5 out of 5 stars Audio version.......2007-08-23

Excellent audio CDs. I did not realize how co-dependent I was until I listened to them and they have helped me rethink so many of my actions or reactions. They have helped to bring peace to my life and help eliminate worries and control issues. I listen to them each time I have alone time in my vehicle.

5 out of 5 stars Detachment.......2007-07-31

I think every person co-dependent or not, alcoholic or not should read this book. It applies to our every day strugles in life. There no normal family.
Thanks, Jill

"The best way to understand the dramatic transformation of unknown books into bestsellers, or the rise of teenage smoking, or the phenomena of word of mouth or any number of the other mysterious changes that mark everyday life," writes Malcolm Gladwell, "is to think of them as epidemics. Ideas and products and messages and behaviors spread just like viruses do." Although anyone familiar with the theory of memetics will recognize this concept, Gladwell's The Tipping Point has quite a few interesting twists on the subject.

For example, Paul Revere was able to galvanize the forces of resistance so effectively in part because he was what Gladwell calls a "Connector": he knew just about everybody, particularly the revolutionary leaders in each of the towns that he rode through. But Revere "wasn't just the man with the biggest Rolodex in colonial Boston," he was also a "Maven" who gathered extensive information about the British. He knew what was going on and he knew exactly whom to tell. The phenomenon continues to this day--think of how often you've received information in an e-mail message that had been forwarded at least half a dozen times before reaching you.

Gladwell develops these and other concepts (such as the "stickiness" of ideas or the effect of population size on information dispersal) through simple, clear explanations and entertainingly illustrative anecdotes, such as comparing the pedagogical methods of Sesame Street and Blue's Clues, or explaining why it would be even easier to play Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon with the actor Rod Steiger. Although some readers may find the transitional passages between chapters hold their hands a little too tightly, and Gladwell's closing invocation of the possibilities of social engineering sketchy, even chilling, The Tipping Point is one of the most effective books on science for a general audience in ages. It seems inevitable that "tipping point," like "future shock" or "chaos theory," will soon become one of those ideas that everybody knows--or at least knows by name. --Ron Hogan

3 out of 5 stars Development of Trends!.......2007-10-02

This book presents an interesting thesis for the parameters under which a new trend is construed. The flu, for example, can be held in check for a long time without being an epidemic. But suddenly, once some threshold is crossed in terms of number of people infected, things get much worse very quickly. Gladwell's premise is that in addition to applying to viruses, this type of pattern is observed in many other situations. The book is filled with far-reaching examples, from the resurgence of Hush Puppies shoes to the popularity of Sesame Street to an epidemic of teen suicides in Micronesia.
Perhaps the most well-known example described is the rapid fall in crime levels in New York City in the mid-1990s. Murder rates fell by 64.3% in a five year period, with other types of violent crimes dropping by 50%. This happened after years of steady increase. Gladwell argues that the factors conventionally cited as causing the improvement (improved policing, declining crack use, and aging of the population) are not sufficient to explain the suddenness of the change. All three factors included gradual shifts in behavior, and yet the drop in crime occurred very rapidly. Gladwell makes a convincing argument that the police in New York put into place certain conditions that suddenly "tipped" the crime epidemic, sending crime rates into a decline.
So, what are the parameters of dramatic change?
Gladwell quotes the following three laws: -
1. The law of the few
2. The stickiness factor and;
3. The power of context
The law of the few says that there are exceptional people out there who are capable of starting `epidemics'. All you have to do is find them. The lesson of stickiness is the same. There is a simple way to package information that, under the right circumstances, can make it irresistible. All you have to do is find it. The lesson of the power of context is that we are more than just sensitive to changes in context; we are exquisitely sensitive to them - what really matters is the little things.
The book includes a collection of case studies. These include Paul Revere's ride, which alerted American colonists to activities of the British garrison and led to the War of Indepence and the success of New York in reducing crime by cleaning the subway cars.
He then explains the significance of the number 150. "The figure of 150 seems to represent the maximum number of individuals with whom we can have a genuinely social relationship, the kind of relationship that goes with knowing who they are and how they relate to you. At a bigger size you have to impose complicated hierarchies and rules and regulations and formal measures to try to command loyalty and cohesions. Below 150 it is possible to achieve the same goals informally. In smaller groups people are a lot closer. They're knit together, which is very important if you want to be effective and successful in community life. If you get too large, you don't have enough work in common."
The conclusion is that when groups or organizations reach 150 they should split and operate in smaller numbers, and he gives examples of organizations that have done this.
Although not intended as a management book, The Tipping Point
has many lessons for managers and organization development consultants.

5 out of 5 stars The book in itself may be described as a tipping point.......2007-09-28

Why does a product suddenly become successful, whereas another does not? This is a good empirical question, and for me, one that is so original that I had not considered it hitherto. This book had been `on my reading list' for some time, having heard several recommendations for it. The ideas about what defines a `tipping point' are clearly defined and well explained, with products or examples that many can identify with.

The examples are the key. In essence, Gladwell describes a `tipping point' as the moment a good sales campaign becomes a phenomenon, and takes examples to illustrate the three salient items; it is contagious, little changes have big effects, and it is not something gradual, but extremely dynamic.

Gladwell takes these, and analyses them further, in his three laws. These concern the individuals involved, how `sticky' or contagious the idea / product is, and the context in which it is presented. Each is described in detail, with real people introduced (not `Bob' or `Sarah' but Mark Alpert and Tom Gau, being but individuals to illustrate the types of individuals).

The book is very readable, and it makes good common sense. Gradwell brings together lots of strands of research, and introduces some very appealable people. The people and situations are selective, but they had to be. They back up the basic premise of the author (no surprise there, then). But in total, the book has a roundness and totality about it.

Examples used are exclusively American, but so is Gradwell! He has also helped to bring rather dusty research into the mainstream of business life and collective consciousness. People now use the language of the research Gladwell describes to define when a product is becoming part of the mainstream of life. After the `Innovators' come, in order, `Early Adopters', the `Early Majority', the `Late Majority' and finally ` Laggards'.

The material is not new; the research in many cases was available before, and the market-place examples were there for all to see. Gladwell has distilled this into a little gem. I should have read it before. Reading it in 2007 will make a difference to the way that I see change. I may even be able to influence how change affects those in the circle around me, thinking back to the central core of `The Tipping Point'.

5 out of 5 stars Simple & Interesting.......2007-09-22

This is one of my "relaxing" books. Basically, I read things like this to chill out. It's a really quick, simple read. You can get some interesting facts, which make excellent conversation tid-bits. It's truly one of those rare books you just remember tons of little details from. The author admits he is using the research/work of other authors and organizations to write the book. He's not taking the credit for discovery of these facts. However, he is combining them in a new way. Complete originality? No, but entertaining nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it........2007-09-21

The information presented in The Tipping Point is not necessarily business/marketing related. In fact, it's more social commentary than anything else. While this is more an informational book than a strategic one anybody in the marketing industry should find this book extremely engaging as it has a lot to offer to those of us who want to learn more about how and why certain things happen in the marketing sphere.

The premise of The Tipping Point is that some things develop slowly over time but then suddenly reach a point where they take off . It can be a sudden surge or a sudden decline, depending on the circumstances. Whether it's a disease, information, a product, or anything else, there is a certain point where things suddenly change. A change that is outside of past projections and does not conform to the previous patterns. That's when they reach their "tipping point". Suddenly diseases become more widespread, information creates a furor, products skyrocket or decline in sales, etc.

Malcolm Gladwell takes us through a series of stories that show how trends are often created, both in society and in business. Sometimes these are the result of getting things to the right people at the right time, and sometimes they can be manufactured. It can even be a combination of the two. But one thing is for sure, to get something to "tip" whether it happens naturally or through a lot of research, it must be genuine. But as the sub-title suggests, tipping is rarely about doing big things, but doing small things well.

Several good examples are made in the real of marketing, specifically a history of Sesame Street and Blues Clues and why those shows have been as effective as they are. We also learn the anatomy of how and why certain things tip. This was one of the most fascinating reads I've had all year and, again, even though it's not directly a business book, it is certainly a book businesses can learn a thing or two from.

Very good book. Helps anyone who is in network marketing. Watch the Docmentary on Court TV on Sept. 29, 2007, and you'll see just what a tipping point is. Thank you.

I have probably referenced this book more in my training seminars and speaking engagements than any other book I have ever read. I just love it! (I gave everyone in my family a copy for Christmas) The author states that 99 out of 100 people report that they would like to be surrounded by more positive people. "And the church said; AMEN!" This short, interesting, and succinct read teaches the reader how to become one of those "more positive people." A must read about positive psychology for anyone who has to be around negative people in our negative world. I think that pretty much includes all of us, doesn't it?

4 out of 5 stars How Full is Your Bucket?.......2007-07-29

The book assigns theoretic valuations to philosophic concepts.
For instance, a full bucket has a net positive outlook + Energy
from every drop of strength expended. Relentless negativity leads to
death. The North Koreans broke down peer cohesiveness by insisting
that captors confess their transgressions publicly.

The author believes that regular praise= increased productivity,
tenure, loyalty and satisfaction. People leave when they aren't
appreciated sufficiently. Bad bosses increase stroke risk.
Activiely disengaged employees cost employers upward of $50B a
year or more. A strength of the book is that the authors attempt
to quantify universal concepts within practical contexts of
everyday life. To a considerable extent, the authors succeed.

Book Description

Whether they are corporate professionals, budding entrepreneurs, or they own a home business, most people are looking to achieve more in less time, while earning enough money to live comfortably. This book reveals the proven techniques thousands of people have used to attain all of the money they wanted while living healthy, happy and balanced lives. The Power of Focus, the new blockbuster from the coauthors of the bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul, is a practical no-nonsense guide that shows readers how to reach their business, personal and financial goals without getting burned out in the process. Canfield, Hansen, and Hewitt have taken the best ideas from their own successful careers (seventy-nine years of combined business expertise), and distilled them into ten powerful focusing principles. The result is a treasury of insights that is enjoyable to read and easy to understand. At the outset, the book identifies the three most important fundamentals for consistent success: developing unusual clarity; understanding that habits determine your future; and using a "no exceptions policy" approach to focus on what you want. Numerous anecdotes and inspiring stories help to reinforce each principle. This is a must-read for business people, sales managers, entrepreneurs, and anyone who is serious about improving their personal awareness.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for entrepreneurs.......2007-08-09

The creators of the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series, Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen, have teamed up with top performance coach Les Hewitt to create The Power of Focus, a step-by-step guide to making your dreams become reality and creating the life you want.

In order to get the most out of the information in this book, one must first realize this: "Success takes effort and consistent, focused activity." (quoted directly from the book)

In a nutshell, that's essentially what the book is all about, and it is only worth reading if one understands and agrees with that statement and is willing to put it into action. The "Power of Focus" is not something to just read and then think about; it is a set of instructions for doing the things necessary to achieve your goals

Each chapter describes specific strategies and techniques, and includes motivating stories about real people who have implemented and succeeded with those techniques. At the end of the chapter is a set of Action Steps, which condenses the strategies into an easy-to-follow instructional format. In addition to a well laid action plan for success, the book also provides loads of suggestions for additional reading to help keep one motivated and continuously learning. All in all, "The Power of Focus" is easy to read and understand, and is quite motivational as well.

While the book seems to be geared toward self-starters, business owners, entrepreneurs and the like, there is something of value in it for everyone. Most, if not all, of the techniques described in this book could be used with respect to any goal, be it business, financial, or personal. For someone who is stuck in any aspect of life and not sure how to effect change, reading and implementing the techniques defined in "The Power of Focus" could definitely help.

Very helpful book. For years I had thought that I was "flying by the seat of my pants" in my private practice. This book helped me plan and carry out a business structure that really works for me. I attend to many different areas (personal, health, relationship, contribution, etc.) in my life with direction. I have been using the methods in the book for four months now and it has changed my life. I have given this book as a birthday gift to my very good friend and my wife.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST Read For Every Entrepreneur! .......2007-05-28

This book is my new business bible! It's absolutely the best book I have ever read on how to stay on track, find balance, and create not only a business that is in alignment with your desires and goals, but a better lifestyle!

It's an easy read and it actually tells you how to make these changes in a way that make sense and really work! After the first read, I've already made two major changes in my life that are giving me more balance; regular exercise, and making more time for family and friends. And I know that there will much more to come!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good book from sketchy infomercial guy.......2007-09-21

First of all I do think this is a powerful book. This is due more to Tony Robbins ability to generate enthusiasm in the reader and his ability to organize already-published materials than it does with his own originality though.

I'm not the biggest Tony Robbins fan nowadays. I've heard him make too many ridiculous, unproven comments on his tapes to completely take him seriously. And his infomercial persona is hard to shake, but at the heart of it this is really powerful book for transformation just like he claims. It's mainly things he picked up from older self-help books and things like NLP but Tony does organize it in a usable fashion and really gets you pumped up to put some changes into effect.

I went through a hard time many years ago and this book helped me turn one of the worst experiences in my life into one of the most productive, so for that I will always have a soft spot for Tony and this book.

I do recommend staying away from his overpriced seminars though. Everything a smart and motivated person needs is already in this book. You do not need to pay a penny more to anyone over the cost of this book if you are serious about making life changes.

I'd also like to point out that this is a tighter, stronger book than his first one, and recommend a new person start here.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Book That Never Claims to be Pure NLP.......2007-09-02

Awaken the Giant has it's place on bookshelves if for no other reason that it is a workable system to empower a person's entire life.

In doing this, Robbins has done an outstanding job to make change techniques applicable to the average person. His previous book, Unlimited Power, conveys Robbins' understanding of NLP and therefore can be claimed to be a book on the subject. The problem with Unlimited Power is that there countless books on NLP by much more reputable and learned authors than Robbins.

Awaken the Giant is a book that extends well past his first works and the way I see it, adds tremendous value to the field of positive psychology. How, I hear you mutter? Awaken the Giant, using NLP and conditioning techniques at its core, is a well thought out and cohesive system of change, rather than a collection of insights and techniques as many pure NLP books are. The book really focuses on taking control of your life and how to do it. It is not a book of fluffy half-theories and heart-warming anecdotes as most self help books are.

Awaken the Giant never claims to be a book on NLP, and, in fact, takes a main premise of NLP - you have all the resources inside you - and helps organise those resources so they work for you, not against you.

The book is a little long, and could have been a bit more concise, however, it is presented in a much user friendly way than Unlimited Power.

As an NLPer, I appreciate the outcome Robbins had in mind for this book - a whole system for the average person couldn't tell you the difference between a metaprogram and a submodality, but is probably frustrated with underachieving.

5 out of 5 stars Real Results in the Real World.......2007-08-13

I bought this book 3 years ago. I was 35, selling cars, making less than $35,000 a year, fat, a smoker, and wondering where all the supposed "promise" I had ever went. I had a few good years in the past, but they were long gone. I didn't just read this book, I consumed it. Like Baptists read the Bible I read this book, and I started a success journal. Now, 3 years later. I work for myself (if you can call doing whatever I want work) and make $10,000 - $15,000 per month. I work out 6 days a week, I don't smoke, every relationship I have with everyone I love is 3x better than it ever has been.

I read "motivation", "self-help" and "how to succeed" books since I was 19 years old. And I did my best to follow them... not much happened in the end. This book, when Tony said "do this", I did it and there was an INSTANT change. Instant change after Instant change turned into the beginnings of a new life after 6 months, the taste of freedom after 18 months, and now unstoppable, unflappable, unimaginable success and happiness for a guy with a high school degree and never a penny in the bank before my next paycheck (until after Tony Robbins). Is this an unvarnished RAVE? You bet! I read this ONE book and applied it to my life. Now I have the life I always wanted.

3 out of 5 stars The good, the bad, and the " LETS MOVE ON ALREADY!!!".......2007-07-26

My review falls some where in the between the reviews discussing the overwhelming amount of FLUFF contained in this book and the fact that Robbins' excercises can work!!! This 500+ page epic should really be revised by robbins to help readers concentrate on the true main points he is making. remove a three quarters of the anecdotes and and integrate the small subjects of vocabulary and metaphors into the bigger more overarching principles and remove about half of the crappy quotes sporadically placed in the book and you might have something worthy of 4 squares or at least 3 1/2. But no matter what read it get the brunt of the book and its message and prepare yourself to not agree and not follow through and its OKAY!!! Mind you the ever so bright eyed and bushy tailed Robbins' himself is absolutely no picture perfect poster child but must still be greatly acknowledged for the work and effort he has put in and the many lives he has empowered and bettered.

Book Description

You've probably seen it before: a human brain dramatically lit from the side, the camera circling it like a helicopter shot of Stonehenge, and a modulated baritone voice exalting the brain's elegant design in reverent tones.

To which this book says: Pure nonsense. In a work at once deeply learned and wonderfully accessible, the neuroscientist David Linden counters the widespread assumption that the brain is a paragon of design--and in its place gives us a compelling explanation of how the brain's serendipitous evolution has resulted in nothing short of our humanity. A guide to the strange and often illogical world of neural function, The Accidental Mind shows how the brain is not an optimized, general-purpose problem-solving machine, but rather a weird agglomeration of ad-hoc solutions that have been piled on through millions of years of evolutionary history. Moreover, Linden tells us how the constraints of evolved brain design have ultimately led to almost every transcendent human foible: our long childhoods, our extensive memory capacity, our search for love and long-term relationships, our need to create compelling narrative, and, ultimately, the universal cultural impulse to create both religious and scientific explanations. With forays into evolutionary biology, this analysis of mental function answers some of our most common questions about how we've come to be who we are.

5 out of 5 stars Nicely done, accessible account of the human brain.......2007-08-08

David Linden's "The Accidental Mind" is a neat little book. He has two main purposes: (a) to write a readable introduction on brain science, accessible to nonspecialists; (b) to make the case that (page 6) `. . .the brain is an inelegant and inefficient agglomeration of stuff, which nonetheless works surprisingly well." As to the first point, this volume is a far cry from the magnificent work, Michael Gazzaniga's The Cognitive Neurosciences III: Third Edition. However, if one is not well steeped in knowledge and understanding of the neurosciences, Gazzaniga's edited work is close to impenetrable. This book is well and crisply written, explaining simply how neurons work the structure of the brain, how the brain develops, and so on.

As to the second point? He asserts that, quoting Francois Jacob (Page 6), "'Evolution is a tinkerer, not an engineer." That is, evolution operates on organisms as they are and then the process of change takes advantage of the material already existent to adapt to new conditions and challenges. Thus, the human brain is mounted on older, more primitive structures, in an ill fitting complex. As he says (page 21): "The brain is built like an ice cream cone (and you are the top scoop): Through evolutionary time, as higher functions were added, a new scoop was placed on top, but the lower scoops were left largely unchanged."

Thereafter, he speaks of the structure of the brain, how the fully mature human brain develops (with both nature and nurture having roles to play), how the brain is associated with all manner of emotions, learning, religion, and so on.

The Ninth chapter has a title that speaks directly to Linden's first theme--"The Unintelligent Design of the Brain." Here, he slyly critiques advocates of the "Intelligent Design" perspective by noting that the brain is hardly an exemplar of some great design. As noted already, he sees the brain as inefficient and "jury-rigged."

This is a book that provides plenty of insight into how neuroscientists study the structure and function of the brain--and presents some of the exciting possibilities for future research.

In sum, this is a work that ought to be attended to by those interested in the brain sciences, but who cannot readily read the technical literature.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining?.......2007-07-30

This is a great book for readers who are interested in an overview of the anatomical and physiological functions of the brain. If you have had any previous A+P, this book may give you flashbacks (and does a good job of explaining how those feelings were "created.") You may even recognise many of the examples and case studies right from classic lectures.
If you are approaching "The Accidental Mind" as pure entertainment, enjoy. If you are looking for juicier or more in depth case studies, keep browsing.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Refreshing Book On Brain Science.......2007-07-18

The addition of this review is to fill in one gap in particular. Dr. Linden is the first scientific author I have read in quite a while that wasn't flip with schools of thought. He has distilled research with varied hypothesis and has enough respect for his field and the reader to frankly state when "We just don't know." My only regret is that Dr. Linden didn't make this book the "larger tomb" he mentions when wrapping up the research that didn't make it into the book. Highly recommended to anyone who is mystified by belief and dreams.

4 out of 5 stars A Perspective-Changing Read about the Brain.......2007-07-04

Why do we sleep? What is love? What is happening when we dream? These questions seem so basic to our human experience, and yet the average person in at a complete loss to explain even the most common of our daily experiences. This is where the Accidental Mind comes in. Linden's book offers a refreshingly different perspective on the brain. After reading this book, you will have a much better understanding of how your brain shapes your experience, it's limitations, and what is going on "behind the curtain." Intelligence, gender identity, sexuality, are all covered with an eye to how these factors play out in the architecture of the brain.

This book also provides a great deal of information on the biological basis for issues that are being debated in our culture, which many people will find enlightening and necessary for making informed comments.

If you are considering picking up this book, read Chapter 7 on sleep, available for free from Linden's website:

[...]

While the book may sometimes goes into great detail on the biology, most readers will find plenty of compelling information in these pages. People who enjoy this book and are interested in some of the practical insights that new research is providing about humans, how we work, and practical advice for improving our lives should check out The Happiness Hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt.

Happy reading!

5 out of 5 stars For your thinking and reading friends...........2007-05-31

I found The Accidental Mind a well written, humorous and thought-provoking introduction to neuroscience and to some profound ideas about evolution and other topics. It's the kind of book that makes you interrupt your partner's reading every five minutes with "Hey, listen to this...." If Dr. Linden lectures as entertainingly and interestingly as he writes, his classes at Johns Hopkins University must be in great demand.

Florence Scovel Shinn was writing about prosperity consciousness in the late 1800's and early 1900's, well ahead of the current trend. Her books are easy to read and easy to understand. I highly recommend this book to all of my friends and they are purchasing it and doing the same. That says it all in my mind.

5 out of 5 stars Changed my entire approach to living. . ........2007-07-06

The Game of Life and How to Play It has been the most influential self-help reading to date that I have found. The book is easy to read and understand. I have read my copy probably 15 times; pages are beginning to fall out. The fact that it is divided into sections for life's encounters, e.g., prosperity, love, etc., I can go back when I need help getting through the rough times to that particular section and gain strength and guidence. Once read, the writings just all come together to make more sense about approaching life's daily challenges than anything I have ever read; and, trust me I've read plenty of self-help books. I love this book so much that I have bought 6 copies to give to beloved family members and close friends because I do not want to keep the insights this book reveals to myself. I want everyone I care deeply about to experience what this book has to offer. Great read, great lessons!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2007-06-13

I've had this book for years and have worn out the cover. I refer to it constantly. I purchased copies for friends and have been doing so since I first read it. Florence was before her time!

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book of All Time!.......2007-06-09

Absolutely without question the most charming and inspiring book I've ever read. My copy is lovingly dog-eared, my loaner copy is in the same condition and I've bought several as gifts.

Of all the "positive thinkers", including the much more well-known such as Louise Hay and Norman Vincent Peale, Florence is the most enjoyable to read and the easiest to apply to your life, in my opinion.

Reading her is sheer delight and an instant mood-lifter and problem-solver, every time.

5 out of 5 stars before the secret.......2007-05-17

This is an amazing collection of writings that gives real and practial ways to move forward in life. A Lady well before her time, the princibles that she teaches are not secrets just forgotten over time.

Have a little faith, change your Life.

This grandfather of all people-skills books was first published in 1937. It was an overnight hit, eventually selling 15 million copies. How to Win Friends and Influence People is just as useful today as it was when it was first published, because Dale Carnegie had an understanding of human nature that will never be outdated. Financial success, Carnegie believed, is due 15 percent to professional knowledge and 85 percent to "the ability to express ideas, to assume leadership, and to arouse enthusiasm among people." He teaches these skills through underlying principles of dealing with people so that they feel important and appreciated. He also emphasizes fundamental techniques for handling people without making them feel manipulated. Carnegie says you can make someone want to do what you want them to by seeing the situation from the other person's point of view and "arousing in the other person an eager want." You learn how to make people like you, win people over to your way of thinking, and change people without causing offense or arousing resentment. For instance, "let the other person feel that the idea is his or hers," and "talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person." Carnegie illustrates his points with anecdotes of historical figures, leaders of the business world, and everyday folks. --Joan Price

Wow..."A Reader" seems extraordinarily bitter...

Every day you go to work, you are on a "stage"...as in "It's show time, folks!" The working world is highly competitive, and a necessary tool to all but guarantee your success is deception. This book/author teaches the art of deception. Whether or not the reader chooses to use this information to his/her advantage is a matter of personal choice.

This book has a purpose, and successfully presents that purpose, hence the four-stars...

Timeless advice and a charismatic delivery make this book enjoyable and likely to be acted on and revisited throughout your life. It will open your eyes wider, and give affirmation to mankind. Some reviews are all rah-rah, but I find the book is at times gleefully manipulative and uses only the best examples of its principles in action -- there's no guarantee you will make that sale, or that person will become your friend -- but it is worthwhile information and certainly is inspiring. It's definitely worth the price, and if you order through Amazon, it was a five star shipment for me.

4 out of 5 stars Worth Reading and Doing.......2007-08-04

The principles it expounds are sound and the practices it prescribes are effective and beneficial. In a nutshell: it works.

That said, we are fortunate to have a better alternative for an individual who wishes to self-treat, without the assistance of a therapist. The magisterial book, _The Feeling Good Handbook_, by David D. Burns is one of those once-in-a-lifetime works which has no peer.

Both books share the same perspective on changing how you feel. As other reviewers have mentioned, _Mind Over Mood_'s basic tool is called a "thought record." You are instructed to change the way you think by writing down your thoughts and feelings in the thought record. You then identify the evidence for and against your thoughts. You conclude by writing a more balanced view of things.

The primary method of the thought record is looking at the evidence which supports or conflicts with your thoughts.

The basic tool of Burns's book is called a "daily mood log." This tool bears some resemblance to the thought record but there are subtle differences. Whereas Greenberger and Padesky have you critique your thoughts solely in terms of the evidence for and against them, Burns provides you with a more varied toolbox. He has identified a list of ways that we systematically distort our thinking. For example, we might get down on ourselves or others by using the words "should," or "must," or "ought." I might feel bad when I tell myself that "I should have turned left instead of right when I got off the highway." A more balanced thought would be, "I would have preferred that I had turned left and I can accept myself for having turned right." When I develop the habit of examining my thoughts and replacing them with more balanced thoughts, my mood brightens.

I currently am following Greenberger and Padesky's method in that I have done at least one of their thought records daily for 60 days. I haven't done one of Burns's daily mood logs for a few years. But I found Burns's mood logs to be a better method for improving my mood and I plan on rereading Burns's book soon.

_Mind Over Mood_ is an excellent book. I recommend you read it and practice it. If you could only buy one book, I would recommend you buy Burns's book. But most of us have the ability to buy more than one book and _Mind Over Mood_ is certainly worth studying.

I would recommend it to anyone who suffers from depression or any other mood disorder. I would also suggest that a loved one of someone described above read this book also.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Can Change Your Life.......2007-04-10

After years of therapy that helped a little, this book finally transformed my life. Instead of just learning to deal with my crazy anxieties, I was finally able to eliminate them. I am now a firm believer in cognitive behavioral therapy. This book provides easy exercises that work - to teach you how to change your life by changing your thoughts, one at a time.

I recommend this book to anyone and everyone and will continue to do so.

Book Description

Praise for The Cancer Treatment Revolution

"A wonderful journey through modern medical science, told with warmth and insight, brought to life through the stories of people confronting cancer. This book will inspire and educate both laymen and caregivers."
—Jerome Groopman, M.D., author of The Measure of Our Days and The Anatomy of Hope and Recanati, Professor, Harvard Medical School

"This is probably the best book on cancer that exists--beautifully written and unfailingly interesting, conveying a clear sense of hope for cancer patients and survivors. Cancer treatment has come a long way but not without intense struggles and passions, which David Nathan narrates from the inside as one of the leading players. He explains cancer more clearly than anyone else, and his portraits of great cancer doctors are sharp and unforgettable, a contribution to history."
—Richard Preston, author of The Hot Zone and The Demon in the Freezer

"No one is better positioned to tell the tale of the cancer treatment revolution of the last half century than David Nathan. A brilliant physician-scientist, he has been present at the cusps of history in this life-and-death field. The story he tells here is fascinating, and his book is captivating."
—Atul Gawande, M.D., author of Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science and Better: A Surgeon's Notes on Performance and Assistant Professor of Surgery, Harvard Medical School

"David Nathan is a true storyteller. In The Cancer Treatment Revolution, he tells stories that bridge cancer patients and cancer research as few others could. These gripping tales will be appreciated by those who live with cancer and those who strive to create new therapies."
—Thomas Cech, Ph.D., recipient of the 1989 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and President of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute

4 out of 5 stars A promise of Hope.......2007-05-13

The reader is left with the feeling that just around the corner specific cancer killing drugs will be available (as opposed to the current drugs which kill all cells in sight...(which is why patients become gravely ill from "chemo" treatments). The problem is, of course, how far is the corner..10 years, 20, more?

Still,it is worth reading and gives hope where there may only have been despair...

4 out of 5 stars Cancer Treatment Revolution --- review.......2007-05-12

Very clearly written, warm hearted. To me the title suggested a more comprehensive coverage than there is. There is a very good introductory chapter and then 3 individual cases as examples of the medical progress. An excellent start on the subject.
