Customer Reviews:
There's just no competition . . . ........2007-09-26
. . . . and that's the main problem with this book.
My main gripes are:
1. The author's basic premise in designing the book and accompanying practice exam/problems is that the only good preparation is over preparation. To that end, many of the problems and examples are gratuitously overcomplicated with unit conversions or problem assumptions that are far afield of actual exam questions.
2. The author seems to have a deep set insecurity that propels him to focus on witless minutia. The most glaring example of this is his ongoing obsession with gravity and the distinction between "lbf" vs "lbm" that needlessly over complicates familiar formulas throughout the manual. The exam doesn't ask us to calculate the unit weight of soil on the moon or to make frequent conversions between SI and English units so what's the point? Yes, the English system is silly but, NO, it doesn't need to be over complicated.
3. Apart from the introduction, the book really doesn't focus on the PE Exam at all. Notably absent are strategies for solving problems of a type that frequently recur on the exam. Nor is there any sort of notation that might indicate that a particular discussion thread is really more suited for the "PM Depth" exam than the general "AM breadth" preparation. The book is really more a collection of helpful knowledge than an exam preparation guide.
All in all, this manual tries to be too much to too many people. With five separate engineering disciplines, each examinee must derive their own studying focus without any real guidance from the author.
PPI should make reference manuals for each discipline that reflect each discipline's corresponding exam focus.
A Must Have.......2007-05-20
This was definitely useful during the test. It's the Bible for civil engineers. One advantage of this book is the glossary in the back since the a few test questions will test you on knowledge of specific engineering words. Get it!
Good so far.......2007-05-14
Good for reviewing for the PE exam, very comprehensive. Note: I haven't taken the exam yet.
AMAZON CREDIT DISCOUNT A TRICK DON'T DO IT.......2007-02-26
The advertisement for a $30 credit is deceiving, don't fall for it.
A C.E. must-have.......2007-02-05
Same author helped me pass the F.E. (EIT) with the study book that he has available for that, and hopefully this one will do the same when it's time for me to take the P.E.
Customer Reviews:
Horrible Review Manual.......2007-09-22
I would be embarrassed to put my name on this book. The layout of the book is completely out of order, who starts an engineering review with Fluids and doesn't cover the very basics of Statics until section 43? I understand that this is not a novel and doesn't need to read like one, but some logical flow of material would be nice. It would also be helpful if the review problem book that goes with this manual used equations out of this manual. At least 1/4 of the problems use formulas that seem to have come out of thin air. Oh yeah, ideal gas law pv=Rt is nowhere to be found in the entire book. How this manual became the standard is beyond me. Maybe there is nothing better out there, but I'm certain that there is nothing worse. Hopefully Mark's will get me through the exam next month.
Wonderful Reference for the Test.......2007-08-10
I couldn't have passed without it. I was a great information source for the test and I use it at work, as well.
Big Heavy Book.......2007-06-14
This is onle heavy book but for good reason, there is a lot of good information in here. I got this book to help me study for the PE exam, however I am not eligable to take it for another 2 years. If I could do it all over again, I probably could have bought this book and used it for every engineering class I had throughout all of college. I have about 20 or so engineering books that I have collected over the years and this one book about sums it all up except for those classes that are very speciallized like Fuel Cell Design or English 1. Even though I am out of college and can't take the exam for a while, it is still a very good reference book for work. I used to keep all my collage book so I would have them for referance but since I got this book, the rest just stay in a box now. I have so far found one flaw, there are things in there I don't know what to do with them but then I realized that it was stuff school never taught me in the first place. So not really a flaw of the book... the book is great.
BUY IT.......2007-05-31
If you are taking the Mechanical PE exam, you know you need this book so just bite the bullet and buy it. It has 90% of what you'll need for the exam without any other resources.
Don't forget the ASHRAE books if you take the HVAC afternoon session.
Things to be aware of...you may want the 11th edition.......2007-03-26
Although the MERM and other PPI materials are helpful there are several things about them I wish I was aware of before purchase (Note, I probably still would have purchased them, but it would have been a more informed choice). First, I bought the 12th edition with the intent of using it alone as a reference and source of review problems. I did not want to get the 'Practice Problem Solution Manual' since I didn't think I'd need solutions too. I was dissapointed to find that after opening the MERM 12th edition the first thing I read is the practice problems are removed, causing me to buy the Practice Problem book. Since the 12th edition retailed for the same as the 11th I don't see any gain from the 12th edition. Plus there is no errata published for it yet. The MERM itself is primarily useful now as a summary to give you a sense of how to study (don't get me wrong, this is still very important). Otherwise all of the information is contained in Mark's or other handbooks. The information in the PE MERM is taken directly from the FE/EIT reference manual also sold by PPI. It is also repeated in the Civil PE review manual and I'd imagine the others. Hence PPI is mainly marketing about one book in many different configurations. This is likely what leads to the issues associated with the practice exam being in SI and English units instead of just English.
Book Description
The Structural Engineering Reference Manual is a comprehensive resource for preparation for the NCEES Structural I and Structural II exams and for the California state structural exam. Eight chapters provide coverage of all exam topics.
Customer Reviews:
Good book for the SE 1 Exam.......2007-05-12
Having just taken the SE 1 exam, I found this book to be helpful in both the preparation time before the exam and also during the exam. I especially liked how the variables were printed in each corresponding section (Wood, Steel, Masonry, etc.) versus having one large master variable list. The Index is amazingly throughouh. Also, most minor mistakes were posted on PPI's errata webpage. I would reccomend this book to any person preparing for the SE 1 exam and suggest they give themselves ample time to go through each of the problems in the book.
Good Reference and Good Problems.......2007-05-01
I thought that this was a good up to date reference with good problems added in the text to help with review. I would definitely get this book if you are studying for the SE I. You will of course still need all of your code books and other books. Also be sure to get the NCEES sample test so you can really see what style the problems will be. It is a good review of most of the information that will be on the test.
Good Book, but not for the Test.......2007-02-01
When I found this book online I thought,"Great, a concise study guide to the Structural I PE". When I got to the test every person in the room had a copy of the same book. During the test I used it about three times. Needless to say I had spent almost my entire study time combing through the reference manual thinking that I was getting "prepared". A word of wisdom; the pass rate on the Structural I in Colorado last fall was 30%. Do you think the test makers would make it that easy so that you could buy a book with all the problems right off Amazon? The good news is that this book has been a really good reference for work back at the office. So in short, a good book for minor reference work, but I wouldn't walk into the test again thinking this book was my bread and butter.
A decent review book.......2007-01-21
This is probably the most comprehensive review book available for the NCEES Structural I and II exams. The third addition has been updated to include ACI-2002 and IBC-2003 codes. While most of the book is written in a clear and consice manner, it is incomplete. There is no coverage of wind loads for buildings or bridges. Nor is there an any coverage of major structural components such as diaphragms or drag struts. These are all topics which candiates sitting for the exam must understand. While I do recommend this book as a resource for those taking the Structural I and II, exam candidates will find that their preparation for the exam will need to go above and beyond what is covered in this book. In addition to this text, I highly recommend that those studing for the exam purchase the Structural I and II review problems available at the [...].
Well Prepared.......2006-11-08
This book provides a thorough review of all the exam material you will receive for the P.E. exam.

Customer Reviews:
Useful and interesting - STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.......2005-02-08
Despite the intimidating name and size of this tome, I found it fascinating to read. It covers everything from light bulb selection to rooftop chiller maintenance. The depth and breath of coverage is amazing.
This is not a hippie guide to backwoods eco-conservation. It is a practical manual, firmly grounded in science and economics that explains different strategies for maximizing comfort while minimizing energy use. In every case, the author examines both the pros and cons of the measure, and calculates the expected payback term. It is so helpful to have a book that is realistic in its treatment of energy conservation. Lots of books outline promising energy saving techniques, none I've read before talk so frankly about the problems you will encounter when you implement them.
Quite technical in many places, the text excels at explaining important concepts that are often ignored in other texts. I have a background in physics, but not until reading this book did I have a good grasp of the operation of absorption coolers or how the spectrum of a light bulb affects the visual comfort of the scene it illuminates. The concise overview of heat transfer mechanisms is more thorough than any thermodynamics textbook I've ever read.
Most important of all is the practical advice that is clearly based on a huge body of real experience. As the book so frequently points out, energy saving measures are useless if they break or are defeated by building occupants. Hundreds of (non-obvious) examples of these failures are given, with pictures.
This book would be great for anyone with responsibility for designing or maintaining buildings of any size. If you are hesitant to pay the high price, find it at a local library. I don't write many Amazon reviews, but after reading this book I felt compelled to strongly recommend it.
Superlative! A must have!.......2003-12-08
Superlative! The ENERGY EFFICIENCY MANUAL by Donald Wulfinghoff is a "must have" for professionals, libraries, facility managers, policy makers, homeowners, and anyone else who is serious about saving energy and cashing in on lower energy bills. It is the ultimate energy saving resource for businesses, industry, and government. PLUS, it will save money and reduce pollution, satisfying corporate bottom lines, policy makers, and environmentalists all at the same time. This book is unique. Highly informative, illustration-rich, and user-friendly, it is treasure trove of everything you need to know about energy efficiency from A to Z. Don't bother looking elsewhere -- the ENERGY EFFICIENCY MANUAL simply has it all. This book will pay for itself almost as fast as you can spot a hot air leak or install an energy-efficient light bulb!
-- Amy Vickers
A secret weapon for the energy auditor.......2003-07-01
As an energy auditor I'd almost call the Energy Efficiency Manual a secret weapon, except it has so many good ideas that I can't help but show it to many of the customers and prospective customers I meet. The diagrams are very useful, as is the self contained but well cross-referenced way in which each improvement measure has been written. For example, talking to the maintenance manager of a hospital, we looked at the diagrams of hot/cold deck multi-zone systems while discussing the pros and cons of upgrading a constant volume air conditioning system to a variable volume system. It is by far the most useful book on energy management that I have ever read (well, in the case of the Energy Efficiency Manual, that I have partially read - its an enormously large book!), and the ratings of each of the measures are particularly useful, along with the practical, no-nonsense approach. The book is extremely well cross referenced and Wulfinghoff has covered an enormous body of knowledge in writing the book. As someone fairly new to the field I'm grateful that he went to the effort of documenting and making available his knowledge and 30 odd years experience in the Energy Efficiency Manual.
Everything you always wanted to know, in plain English.......2001-04-25
I nodded my head in agreement while reading Wulfinghoff's philosophy about energy savings in commercial and light industrial facilities. He distills 20+ years of experience in this field with practical, no-nonsense how-tos to gain energy and dollar savings in a wide variety of facilities and end-uses: lighting, water use, steam systems, space heating, water heating, air conditioning, scheduling, pumps, energy management controls: its all here in a well-written, well-illustrated book.
Perhaps best of all, the author goes beyond theoretical considerations of high-tech efficiency products, with precautions of what works and what might fall short. He also reminds facility managers to be mindful of the human factors that can foil our best efforts. He offers suggestions on how to plan and manage efficiency upgrades complete with information for building operators and occupants, so that the savings persist.
Highly recommended for anyone managing energy use in facilities, ranging from individual buildings to college campuses to government facilities. [I am a local government energy manager myself.]
Provides practical advice for avoiding pitfalls.......2001-02-04
Donald Wulfinghoff's Energy Efficiency Manual is a massive, 1,536-page reference work that is organized to guide the reader quickly to the right information for their particular energy project, problem, or inquiry. The first part of this "user friend" manual has 400 logically grouped activities for improving energy efficiency. each activity begins with Ratings and a Selection Scorecard to help the reader judge the merits and difficulties of that particular activity. "Economics" sidebars estimates the savings, cost, and payback period. The "Traps & Tricks" sidebars provides practical advice for avoiding pitfalls plaguing energy conservation efforts. Energy Efficiency Manual will earn back its cover price over and over again and is an essential, core reference for personal, professional, and community library energy conservation and energy efficiency reference book collections.

CD version of this classic chemical safety reference........1999-03-24
SAX's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials Ninth Edition-CD-ROM Version
The NST/Engineers, Inc. reviewer, an EPA First Responder, found the Ninth Edition of Sax's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials-CD ROM version (SAX CD) to be a powerful database of easily retrievable, detailed, and pertinent information. The reviewer envisions the target users of the SAX CD deriving the most benefit to be: chemical operators, chemical process engineers, chemists, clinical toxicologists, fire companies, first responders, HAZMAT teams, industrial hygienists, plant managers, physicians, police departments, process safety managers, research professionals, risk management planners, safety engineers, transportation officers, and treatment storage and disposal facility (TSDF) personnel.
The 22,380 materials included are categorized at a minimum according to: Listing Name, Hazard Rating, Chemical Name, Molecular Formula, Molecular Weight, Chemical and Physical Properties, Synonyms, Toxicity Data with References, (instantly accessible by screen "pop-ups"), and Safety Profile.
Where available, NIOSH Recommended Exposure Limits, OSHA Permissible Exposure Levels, ACGIH Threshold Limit Values, (all expressed as Time Weighted Averages) and German MAK exposure limits are included. Consensus Reports (Community RTK, EPA TSCA and Genetic Inventory list) along with DOT hazard Classifications and UN/NA 4-digit identifier (for HM-181), CAS Registry number, and Class (carcinogen, mutagen, teratogen, primary irritant, food additive, etc.) are also included.
For forty years, NST/Engineers, Inc. personnel and associates have found editions of SAX to be an invaluable resource. The Ninth Edition on CD ROM provides the instant retrieval capabilities sought by the electronic communication age. The program includes an intelligent default, twelve-characteristic, search engine. It highlights each "hit" in the text and has a "tracking" system that allows the user to look forward or to "backtrack".
In the NST/Engineers, Inc. trials, SAX CD was used in "mock" HAZMAT spills. The reviewer found that the initial assessments of the spills were conducted many times faster by using the SAX CD. Armed with a laptop computer, as are most police and other emergency responders, the addition of this software will greatly decrease response time and reduce the confusion that routinely surrounds hazardous materials incidents. An increase in facility and public safety will be provided by the fingertip access to the knowledge base in the SAX CD .
The SAX CD works on both PC and Macintosh platforms.

Customer Reviews:
Good Review.......2005-01-04
This book provides a good overview of problems, but bring extra reference material to the exam. This book only shows one way of doing problems and there are easier methods out there. However, this book does provide a good general reference.
FOR NON-UNDERGRADUTE ENGINEERS.......2004-06-19
My undergraduate was in Geography. My Masters in Environmental Engineering. I am not good at math, and formulas with greek letters still make me tense inside. Having said this, here are the books you need to concentrate on to pass this exam the first time.
1. This book. It needs to be your centerpiece, your touchstone. You need to know this book, and especially the tables and appendices. Location, Location, Location is so important, know where everything is in this book. Make this book part of your life. Travel with it, sit with it, take it on your 10 minute coffee breaks... just know this book.
2. Next: 101 Solved Engineering Problems. This book has the most realistic PE Problems. Do them all. They are categorized by type so you must write the page from Lindeberg next to the problem in this book for quick cross reference. This is your best book for quickly finding an example of what you are trying to solve on the test.
3. Next: Lindeberg Practice Problems. Also good, but not as good as 101 (above). Use this as a reference. It aligns with the Lindeberg Hard Cover for quick cross reference.
4. Last: Environmental Engineering Practice Exams (Schneiter). Do all the problems. It looks like a Lindeberg, but it isn't. Like 101 Solved Problems, you must cross-reference the problems with there topic location in Lindeberg Hard Cover. Questions are not in a particular order (4 practice exams, level about right), but questions are in random order which makes look-up during exam tough.
5. Environmental Law Handbook (Sullivan). Need this for the regulatory, and statutory questions. Find a good OSHA book too.
6. Last: Environmental Engineering Calculations (Lee & Lin). This book is expensive and big, but it is a good fail safe. What I liked about it is it presented things differently than Lindeberg, in case I didn't understand where Lindeberg was coming from.
7. I HATE CONVERSIONS, and the test is full of them. If you hate conversions, buy Lindeberg's Engineering Conversions. It is a time saver.
You do not have time to use even all of these references. Just don't show up with a heck of a lot more. You need to drill, drill, drill, on the problems so when you see them on the PE, it is like regurgatation. Lindeberg Hard Cover will covers everything you need to know... this book is your centerpiece!

Customer Reviews:
Great reference work for the professional maintenance engineer.......2006-07-18
This book contains over 1500 pages of figures and often dense text. It is the only book of its kind that I know of written clearly for the degreed maintenance and facilities engineer. This book is an edited work by several dozen authors who are all leading maintenance practitioners and experts in their field. The book covers both management and technical issues associated with the maintenance of the modern physical plant.
In reference to management issues, the chapter entitled "Operating Policies of Effective Maintenance" successfully deals with the strategic decisions that Maintenance managers must make, including issues such as whether or not to outsource, shift coverage, whether to decentralize or centralize maintenance, and the use of standard practice sheets and work instructions. The chapter on "Operating Practices to reduce Maintenance Work" provides a basic yet well-formulated introduction to concepts of predictive and preventive maintenance. There is fairly comprehensive coverage of how best to provide incentive payments for maintenance workers, which may or may not be applicable in certain industrial situations.
The Chapters "An Introduction to the Computer in Maintenance" and "Computerized Planning and Scheduling" run the risk of being out of date before the book has long been published. However, the principles that these chapters cover remain somewhat timeless, and also provide a useful starting point for those wishing to understand more about these aspects. Newer younger grads in the field will probably already know this material. The Chapters entitled "Maintenance Stores and Inventory Control" and "Maintenance Storerooms" are very well written. They are particularly valuable since this topic gets relatively little attention from maintenance professionals, and these chapters show their importance.
The chapter entitled "Work Measurement" should give even experienced planners new ways to look at how they estimate job durations, and the chapter entitled "Work Simplification" introduces standard industrial engineering techniques to maintenance personnel, who often are industrial engineers by training, but sometimes are not. The tools discussed include charting tools and techniques that assist planners in identifying ways to make repair tasks quicker and simpler. Planners will also benefit from reading the chapter "Estimating Repair and Maintenance Costs".
The chapters on the technical aspects of maintenance are also well-written, and could be useful both as a reminder for engineers about some fundamental concepts, as well as providing useful information for craftspeople to assist with troubleshooting and ensuring that sound maintenance quality standards are implemented. There is also a very useful introduction to the three main predictive maintenance technologies - vibration analysis, oil analysis and thermography. These sections would equip anyone with a mechanical engineering background to be able to know what questions to ask of experts in these fields.
There is a small section entitled "Sanitation and Housekeeping" that may not be relevant to maintenance engineers or tradespeople, but it is included in keeping with the book's high standard of completeness.
There are a few areas of maintenance engineering that are not covered in this book. In particular, reliability centered maintenance (RCM) and its derivatives are not covered. Reliability modeling techniques such as Weibull Analysis and Root Cause Analysis get mentioned in one brief paragraph in the chapter on vibration analysis, which is a rather odd place for the subject. With all of the recent emphasis on Six Sigma, maybe the thinking was that this would better be handled on a book on that subject. Among the technical sections, there are some fairly common equipment types that are not covered. For example, there is no coverage of the maintenance of hydraulic systems, boilers, PLC's, or distributed control systems.
In spite of these few shortcomings, this is certainly an excellent reference for the maintenance engineer for most facets of the job including planning, financial, organizational, and hands-on technical aspects. The table of contents is as follows:
SECTION 1 - ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT OF THE MAINTENANCE FUNCTION
Chapter 1 - Introduction to the Theory and Practice of Maintenance
