Book Description

(Book Jacket Status: Jacketed)

Carried Away is a dazzling selection of stories–seventeen favorites chosen by the author from across her distinguished career.

Alice Munro has been repeatedly hailed as one of our greatest living writers, a reputation that has been growing for years. The stories brought together here span a quarter century, drawn from some of her earliest books, The Beggar Maid and The Moons of Jupiter, through her recent best-selling collection, Runaway.

Here are such favorites as “Royal Beatings” in which a young girl, her father, and stepmother release the tension of their circumstances in a ritual of punishment and reconciliation; “Friend of My Youth” in which a woman comes to understand that her difficult mother is not so very different from herself; and “The Love of a Good Woman,” in which, when an old crime resurfaces, a woman has to choose whether to believe in the man she intends to marry.

Munro’s incomparable empathy for her characters, the depth of her understanding of human nature, and the grace and surprise of her narrative add up to a richly layered and capacious fiction. Like the World War I soldier in the title story, whose letters from the front to a small-town librarian he doesn’t know change her life forever, Munro’s unassuming characters insinuate themselves in our hearts and take permanent hold.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Munro...A Working-Class Writer.......2006-12-24

I have come to the fiction of Alice Munro late. She has been producing extraordinary short stories set in Ontario, Cananda mostly for decades. And she captures a working-class world for me that speaks to my own roots. The stories are about people first and I expect place secondly, but her sense of the culture and social stratification are so accurate they make me remember and realize. Her sense of detail and dialogue are also accurate and winning. I give this big compendium 5 stars, and recommend her to all.

5 out of 5 stars Great Stories, but Don't Settle for a Selection.......2006-10-24

These stories were purportedly selected by Alice Munro herself. Well, I guess Alice needs to make a living, too, as well as writing masterpiece after masterpiece. However, every story in the selection draws meaning and resonance from its original context in the suite of stories from which it was extracted. If you've never read Munro, I'd suggest getting the early collection Moons of Jupiter. If you're not blown away by that book, you wouldn't be "carried away" by the Everyman's Library selection either. On the other hand, if you are astonished by the emotional subtlety of the Moons, then you'll want to buy and read the other ten story-books as well!

Book Description

The bag is one of the most universal and oldest objects invented by humankind. What began as a prosaic item for everyday use can now be a luxurious treasure that confers instant status. In this unique, lavishly illustrated volume, published to accompany the exhibition Le Cas du Sac, noted fashion historian Farid Chenoune and 24 experts present an unimaginable wealth of bags made for everyone from kings and celebrities to shamans and vagabonds.

This comprehensive book explores the bag as high-fashion totem; travelers' bags; bags for professionals; bags related to money and ceremony; and bags as talismans. The beautiful illustrations, including paintings, fashion photographs, and ethnographic and decorative objects, reveal the variety and importance of bags throughout time, from designer Philip Treacy's silk evening bag printed with Andy Warhol's signature Campbell Soup cans, to the pangu, the bags used by Bamum tribal kings of Western Africa for holding the sovereign's regalia. A co-publication with Hermès, the Parisian designer of luxurious bags and leather goods, Carried Away is sure to delight fashion enthusiasts and those interested in material culture from around the world. AUTHOR BIO: Farid Chenoune is a cultural and fashion historian. He teaches at the Institut Français de la mode and the Ecole national supérieure des arts décoratifs. He has written, among other works, A History of Men's Fashion; Beneath It All: A Century of French Lingerie, and a monograph on Jean-Paul Gaultier. He writes frequently for French Vogue.

4 out of 5 stars Surpasses my expectations.......2005-04-16

There are reasons I like this book and reasons that I am disappointed. The reason that I am disappointed is that I thought that this book was going to have lots of pictures of purses from different eras. The reason I like this book is because it is more than just a book with pictures of purses. "Hmmmm..." you might be thinking. "Whatever does she mean?"

I love looking at bags in fashion magazines. I thought this book was going to be like that...only longer. Instead, it contains the history of bags, the relationship between bags and culture, the psychological meaning of different bags, and dare I say it, the philosophical perspective of bags. Lest you think I am being sarcastic, I really think the author Chenoune does a good job covering these issues in a tongue in cheek manner. "Carried Away" shows the bag as more than just a fashion trend. Although the book does show examples of the bag as woman's fashion accessory, such as the ubiquitous Hermes bag, the book is more of an art book.

"Carried Away" is divided into several sections. My favorite section is about purses in the movies. The author chose still pictures from certain movies. Then, Chenoune explains how the choice of the purse by the costume designer relates to the characters in the movie. Basically, what does the purse say about the psychology of the character and the mood in the scene? I also like the section that shows pictures of different bags and their uses in history, like the painter's bag.

I think for many people this is going to be a book that they pick up in the book store and browse, but not buy. However, I think that other people intested in the bag as an art form, a cultural indicator, or a historical benchmark will find this book interesting enough to read. Therefore, I would not recommend buying it sight unseen, but it is definitely worth a look.

Book Description

Asserting that a history of shopping was, until recently, a history of women, Rachel Bowlby trains her eye on the evolution of the modern shopper. She uses a compelling blend of history, literary analysis, and cultural criticism to explore the rise of department stores and supermarkets of the United States, France, and Great Britain.

Bowlby recalls the fascinating early days of these institutions. In the mid-nineteenth century, when department stores first developed, their fabulous new buildings brought middle-class women into town, where they could indulge in what was then a new activity: a day's shopping. The stores offered luxury, flattering women into believing that they belonged in a beautiful environment. It is here, Bowlby argues, that the idea of the modern woman's passion for fashion and shopping took hold.

Developed in the twentieth century, supermarkets took an opposite tack: they offered functionality, standardization, and cheapness. However, Bowlby claims, despite their differences, the two institutions belong together as emblematic of their respective eras' social developments: the department store with the growth of cities, the supermarket with the proliferation of suburbs. With their dazzling lights and displays, both supermarkets and department stores were thought to produce in females an enhanced or trance-like state of mind.

For readers who regard shopping as a spectator or participatory sport, and for those who wish to understand our culture and the psychology of women, or those who simply enjoy a witty, literate romp through the aisles, Carried Away is the perfect purchase.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars What Do Shoppers Want?.......2001-07-10

The best thing about "Carried Away," is the research Bowlby has done on marketers' changing models of shoppers' consciousness. She deftly shows that these models are empty of any true psychological insight, but instead entirely bound up with the culture and the time and the economic circumstances in which the models were devised. The worst thing is that she spends too much time researching British marketing publications from the 50s and 60s. The US has always been the hot molten center of marketing and retail trends -- a fact which Bowlby readily acknowledges throughout most of the book -- thus the inclusion textual readings from old British marketing journals seems to have everything to do with Bowlby being a professor in England and her original publisher being British, and nothing to do with whether this information is really appropriate.

But this is a relatively minor annyonance in what is really quite a witty, interesting look at the rise of the supermarket and the concomitant creation of new packaging, new advertising, new models of the shopper consciousness. Bowlby is at her best here, giving us an historical perspective of shoppers (mostly women in the early days of supermarket shopping) who, depending on the theorist, are believed to be extremely suggestible given certain conditions, or extremely rational no matter what the conditions. For instance, in the 50s, that era of mass outputs and mass consumption and McCarthyism, some social critics like Vance Parkard posited that advertisers were "hidden persuaders" using sophisticated brainwashing techniques to sell weak-minded women things they did not really need. But in the 60s and 70s, the model of shopper consciousness shifted. Suddenly, the shopper -- still nearly always seen as a woman -- was in charge, "with it," "sophisticated." The rise of the "power brand" in the 80s -- a time during which the appeals of certain brands were apparently so overwhelming that even the sophisticated 70s shopper succumbed -- swung the pendulum back to the weak-minded model. Bowlby neatly lampoons the variations these psycological models have gone through since the rise of the supermarket, but notes that ultimately, this bipolar model is still intact.

I particularly recommend "Carried Away" to marketers, especially young marketers who have never seen the vacillation in the models of shopper consciousness. Take it to the next marketer's conference you attend. It's the perfect antidote to those enlessly dull days spent listening to hour after hour of case studies in which consumers are uniformly described as "sophisticated," or "savvy." Bowlby's light touch and eye for the absurd will help you keep all the tepid, instrumetally tainted "shopper psychology" in perspective.

Book Description

Nobody writes a love story quite like Jill Barnett, whose romantic tales are "as magical and unique as any you ever had the joy to read" (Romantic Times). Now she spirits a misty, secluded island off the central coast of Maine, where a pair of handsome brothers clash with two independent women...

The proud descendants of a Highland clan, Calum and Eachann MacLaughlan live in seclusion on a Maine island. The brothers are as different in spirits as they are in looks. Though one is dark and levelheaded, the other fair and adventurous, they have one thing in common: they want brides. When Eachann's two unruly children are expelled from school, he is even more determined to wed. Following an old Scottish tradition, Eachann decides to solve the problem for both himself and his brother....

Spying on a fancy society party, Eachann sees a solution before him. The always capable debutante Georgina Bayard is basking in the light of her own ball. Meanwhile, outside, Amy Emerson is valiantly struggling to conceal her first broken heart. Swept away by this young Scotsman, both young women become captives. Kidnapped and furious, with only each other for support, Amy and Georgina have a choice: fight for the life they'd previously known...or let their hearts get carried away....

3 out of 5 stars good.......2004-09-21

The author did a back & forthing between 2 couples, which was different. Ill buy another by this author to try a book by her with more progression on one relationship. I enjoyed the characters and the writing was light and funny. But, the story seemed a little rushed.

4 out of 5 stars Two brides for two brothers.......2004-05-30

Georgina Bayard is struggling to keep her estate afloat after her brother recklessly withers away their fortune. Her last chance to save the family's remaining fortune is to marry into wealth. She has chosen short and balding John Canot to marry for his enormous wealth. Georgina thus embarks on the prepartion of society party in her remaining home in Maine to coax a proposal out of her intended.

Amy Emerson, a wealthy heiress of new money has just overheard her fiancé joke with his friends that he is only marrying her for her money. Brokenhearted, Amy pubicly breaks of her engagement at Geogina's party.

Eachann MacLachlan, tall, handsome and blond is the younger of two scots brothers who live on Arrant Island, off the coast of Maine, which remains a mystery to the local mainlanders, is in trouble. His wife died three years ago and he is left with two unruly children who have just been expelled from boarding school. Eachann decides that what he needs is a new wife to look after his two children, Kirsty and Graham.

Calum MacLachlan, older brother of Eachann, is tall dark and handsome and leads an orderly life unlike Eachann. He has sworn that he does not want any women in his life and has deidcated his life to helping newly arrived Scots immigrants.

When Eachann sets his eyes on the vibrant and sharp-tongued Georgina he decides that he will kidnap her for his wife and bring her back to Arrant Island. And for good measure he decides to kidnap Amy for his brother. Before the girls can protest they find themselves bundled aboard a ship and headed for Arrant Island.

Calum is shocked when he finds his brother has kidnapped two debutants to be their wives. He objects and states that the girls must be returned to their families but the problem is no boats can sail whilst there is a thick fog in the air surrounding the island and the fog doesn't lift before two weeks are up, ample time for the protagonists to get to know each other.

Calum and Amy are both attracted to each other's gentle and caring natures. Calum cannot help but notice Amy's sadness and helplessness and Amy finds Calum's meticulous nature endearing. This was sweet love story between two decent people and I was really happy that they got together.

However, as for Eachann and Georgina's story I was less convinced. The interaction and witty dialogue between the two head strong character was wonderful to read about but it was difficult to believe that the ambitious Georgina would end up with Eachann the islander who raises and breeds horses.

However, this was still a good read as with all Jill Barnett books. She never disappoints and I do love the funny situations and witty dialogue that she spins with ease.

5 out of 5 stars Two Romances... Double the Fun!.......2004-04-01

Heiress Georgina Bayard has one last chance to save her home and the Bayard clock dynasty from foreclosure. She must marry a wealthy man, and unfortunately, the one she must manipulate a proposal out of is short and bald. So she's using the last of her money to throw a huge house party to secure her proposal.

Young, gentle Amy Emerson is attending that party, as well as her fiancé. She finds out rather publicly he's only interested in her money. Brokenhearted and humiliated, she breaks off their engagement.

Eachann McLachlan, tall, blonde and a bit wild, lives at Highland Castle with his older brother, Cullum, who is his polar opposite. Cullum is dark, calm, meticulous, and has resolved to remain unmarried. The brothers are descendents of a Highlands clan who were forced to flee Scotland, and now reside together on this remote and isolated island off the coast of Maine.

Eachann's two young children have just been expelled from school, and are returning to live with him and Cullum. Eachann decides he must marry in order to have a wife to raise his children. During Georgina's house party, he overhears her say she must marry, so he impulsively kidnaps her to be his bride. Eachann also witnessed Amy's misery, and decides to bring her along against her will, as the bride for Cullum.

Once back on the island, Georgina is angry, screaming in protest, and tries repeatedly to escape. But between Eachann, who she refers to as "McOaf", and the pea soup fog covering the whole island, she's stuck with her captor. Amy handles the situation quietly while nursing her broken heart. Cullum finds himself attracted to Amy, but valiantly tries to fight his feelings. With escape impossible due to the never-ending fog, ultimately passions begin to flare as both couples come to terms with each other.

You get two romances here, and twice the fun. It's difficult to find a novel where the author can successfully combine two love stories in the same book. Ms. Barnett makes it look effortless in this selection. I never had difficulty keeping track of the characters, or what was taking place. The characters were three-dimensional, and I found all of them likeable. This was a sexy, entertaining, and hilarious read. It is one of my favorites by her, and actually one of my overall favorite romances. An absolute must read!

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2003-02-10

"Carried Away" is the second book that I have read by Jill Barnett and I really enjoyed it. It was a good read for a rainy day. The only two that I disliked about it was 1.I didn't have time frame for when the book took place ( Maybe I just miss that). 2.I would have liked one of the main female characters have relations that were worry about them. Both girls didn't have anyone and that seem a little unbelievible to me. But overall it was a good book.

4 out of 5 stars 4+ stars for an adventure off the coast of Maine.......2002-12-06

I enjoyed this romance tale. It is the tale of two brothers who live on an island off the coast of Maine who have grown a bit eccentric in their ways. One day after having to retrieve his children from a boarding school (as they have misbehaved yet again) Eachann (widowed) decided that he and his brother do need wives and kidnaps 2 women from a "high society" party on the mainland.

Though the story does not tell you what year it is based in it has to be the late 1800's as they are still sailing from Scotland to Bath, ME by sail.

Eachann takes one woman who is not about to go down without a huge fight and reading her escape attempts are very amusing. The other is an heiress who finds out that her fiancé is not who she thought he was (she thought he loved her and not her money). She takes the kidnapping a bit better and uses the time to make sure that her priorities are in the right place.

Overall I really enjoyed this one.

      Book Description

Scorching hot leathersex is only the start when a jaded bottomboy and a one-time Master come together for some no-strings bondage and s/m. But after lust is sated, each finds a deeper hunger within that moves them unexpectedly toward partnership as Owner and owned. Set in the early1990s in New York City, Carried Away is not only replete with hard-core bondage and ferocious leathersex: it's a love story between two men who are equals in intelligence and character, but opposites in temperament. Terry Andrews is a successful architect and all-around topman with a passion for bondage and the means to indulge it. Matt Stone manages a large bookstore, but he lives for the times when he can surrender control. When these two come together at the Spike, the legendary leather bar, neither is looking for a new partner, just a night of hot action. They get that, and much more: almost in spite of themselves, they forge a deeper connection. Matt gradually realizes that he needs to belong to someone, not simply let himself be played with and released. For his part, Terry simply needs to own what he loves, and once he falls for Matt, enslaving him is the only option!

"Goodnight, Mr. Benson - it's time to give the '70s a rest. Besides some of the most sizzling, astoundingly detailed bondage and s/m scenes ever written, Carried Away gives us believable, complex characters struggling with jobs and responsibilities, genuine loss, and frightening realities that have nothing to do with make-believe. The author's passion for his subject weaves throughout the text like ropes in the hands of a Japanese-bondage expert. An instantly engaging tour de force. Highly recommended!" - Laura Antoniou, author of The Marketplace, The Slave, The Trainer, and The Academy

"If anyone is qualified to write hot and realistic man-to-man s/m fiction, it would be david stein, whose lifelong activism within the leather community has bolstered the growth of a whole new world of erotic opportunities. The bondage sex in this book is depicted with great accuracy and feeling, and the characters are well-developed and true to life, making it easy to identify with them. This detailed story reads so smoothly, you'll lose track of the number of pages and wish there was more of it." - Patrick Califia, author of Macho Sluts and Sensuous Magic

"Carried Away may not be the great American novel, but for those who can see voluntary slavery as a laudable way of life and courtship by a Master as romantic, david stein has performed a great feat of literature. By showing what is actually possible, he does for our sometimes ploddingly realistic times what John Preston did for an earlier and more fanciful time. The truth of the lives Carried Away examines will never be forgotten by any serious reader." -Joseph W. Bean, author of Leathersex and Leathersex Q&A, editor of Horsemen: Leathersex Short Fiction

"Realistic, compassionate, shocking, arousing - one of the best gay male s/m novels I've read. By making the world of gay Masters and slaves more accessible, david stein has opened doors the narrow-minded want to keep closed. Carried Away shows that love in an s/m context can be the greatest adventure of all." - Victor Terry, author of WHiPs, Masters, SM/SD, and Tying Knot

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Finally - leather realism that makes sense!!.......2004-08-29

David Stein has done a remarkable job with Carried Away. Leathermen finally have a book that makes sense about the reality, intricacy, emotions, dedication, commitment and personal journey of a consensual dominant/submissive master/slave relationship. This is not a "how to" book, it's a book written with heart and spirit that will touch you and have you thinking about the "why" or "why nots" regarding living the life of a Master or slave. The sex scenes David Stein writes about are HOT - but loaded with such reality you can actually envision yourself doing everything he writes about in real life - because - you can !!! The courtship of Terry (the Master) and Matt (the slave) is romantic but carefully and thoughtfully enveloped by the courage they have to acknowledge and embrace they journey they embark on. David Stein, thank you for Carried Away and sharing it with us.

5 out of 5 stars Time To Bury Mr Benson........2003-11-01

I was never a fan of John Preston's "classic" work because I thought the characters were broad and unrealistic, the situations silly and the stereotypes contemptible. Like most fantasy books about D/s relationships, the main characters seem completely removed from life as we know it. What about the usual day to day, like jobs and family? Cleaning the catbox? Laundry? Cooking? The kind of things that real Dominant and submissives do in real time?

Enter Master Terry Andrews and submissive/potential slave Matt Stone. One night, after a very hot encounter, these two men begin a courtship by collar. Terry begins to look at a bottom he considered a gadabout player in a whole new light, and Matt begins a journey in which he has to understand what his urges mean and if they are true to him. Where in most stories, these issues would resolve inside a chapter or two, for "Carried Away" the characters each have to probe what their instincts demand. What will this kind of relationship do to their lives, and not just a fast lane romp, but for a long-term future?

For those reasons alone, "Carried Away" would set itself apart from the pack. Yet there's more. Author david stein infuses the novel with rich detail of the New York scene and the social activities that the city entertains. You get a well fleshed out background for the how and whys of Matt and Terry's actions and emotions. This is a novel in the old fashioned sense; a lengthy story with a well plotted sequence of events. And make sure you remember that this isn't a sex novel as much it's a heavily romantic novel which incorporates sex. Lots of sex. To the point that it becomes one of "Carried Away's" foreground characters instead of a background activity. After all, this is a leather love story.

The backgrounds themselves are described in the matter a masculine bottom would see them and not like an interior decorator. The words daub the spaces with color and detail without distracting from the plot, something usually missing in homomasculine writing. Mr. stein obviously loves these words. Everything from the steaming heat to the emotional tumult is given equal ebb and flow in "Carried Away." Not a phrase is wasted or situation shorted. Threads woven into the story come to realistic conclusions. And it's very important to note that in "Carried Away" nothing seems implausible. Not the sex, the kink, or the emotions of the main characters. I'll grant you that this kind of attention to detail makes for a hefty volume (this is no quickie read or any sort of flick-through book), but when was the last time you had a modern leather story that could satisfy both your lower gonads, frontal lobes and central heart in equal parts?

David Stein has gifted us with the most realistic, imaginative, and thoughtful Gay Erotic Leather novel that I have ever read. It may have taken him ten years to complete, but the literary bar has been "Carried" to a higher level.

Dani Hamilton has a problem and he is Silas Northrop, a big, handsome ex-Marine who looks too good in tight-fitting jeans. He is also the man with whom she must share a Florida villa for the next six months. Morris Feldman, an acquaintance of both, bequeathed the villa to them, but with a few stipulations. Dani wonders how she will survive her time with the devil-may-care Silas, though he isn't her only concern. The list includes tropical storms, Morris's six ex-wives, numerous relatives, his agent, the gardener, a lost treasure, and Morris's own ghost. But in the end, it's the big ex-Marine to the rescue. Get comfortable and prepare to have the time of your life. Between the antics of the ex-wives, ghosts, a raging storm and one hunk of a man, you won't stop laughing or reading until the very end. A similar book that I recommend is Absolutely Positively by Jayne Ann Krentz. It was recently released in paperback and has a great cast of characters.

      Book Description

      Where there's a will...

Danika Hilliard's eccentric old benefactor, Morris Feldman, carried his healthy sense of humor to the grave ... and beyond, apparently. He left his opulent Florida villa to the pretty, if prissy, schoolteacher and aspiring author--but only if she can finish a novel there within six months... and only if she shares the luxurious space with another would- be-writer, Silas Northrop.

The problem is Silas is motor oil to Danika's rose water--a cocky, good-looking ex-marine who listening to loud music and flaunting his assets in tight-fitting denims. And which ghosts, tropical storms, psychic phenomena, and a mysterious hidden treasure thrown into the mix, it may be almost impossible for Dani to get any work done at all--especially with tantalizing, infuriating Silas nearby, the one distraction she is finding increasingly more difficult to resist.

5 out of 5 stars I Was Most Definetly Carried Away.......2001-11-27

I just finished Carried Away this morning, and the book left me with a smile on my face, warmth in my heart, and the sadness of having to leave the world of Dani and Silas. This book had me hooked from the first page. I couldn't put this book down! This novel combines the elements of a mystery, a romance, and a chiller all into one extremely interesting story line. I developed a particular fodness of all the characters and their unique traits, especially all of Morris's ex-wives. The idea of ghosts and psycic phenomena seemed a bit far-fetched and unbelieveable to me at first, but as I continued reading, Sue Civil-Brown fit those unique elements into her novel in such a way that it made so much sense and enhanced the novel all-around. This is such a wonderful read!

3 out of 5 stars Luke Warm Romance.......2000-12-15

I have enjoyed Brown's books in the past and while I didn't dislike this book the romance between the two main characters was luke warm. The idea for the story was great. It's about two people who inherit a house on the condition that they both live there and write a book each within 6 months then throw in a couple of ghost's (a regular feature of many of Brown's stories) and lot's of relatives. All this makes for a great read but this book just lacked the humour of her previous stories. If you have enjoyed her work previously still read this book but don't buy it new.

      2 out of 5 stars Slow going.......2000-05-19

The concept of Carried Away was humorous, but when it came down to the delivery, it was barely amusing. The romance seem to come out of nowhere. Nothing significant bound the the hero and heroine together except a set of circumstances from a will. All of a sudden, though, the hero was fighting his attraction to the heroine. When the heroine "thought" (for the sake of getting back at the hero), she often thought about such things as "skinning him alive," or "turning him into dog food" or other such physical funnies. I notice the author uses this same thought-pattern with other heroines in other of her books. It's not amusing to me. The book was a disappointment.

      1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2000-03-06

Let's put it this way, when I finished the book, I threw it out rather than passing it on to a friend. I just could not warm up to the main character - found her to be way to "prissy" to be believed. I simply could not picture Silas with this woman. Ghosts and ex wives - do not a romance make!

      5 out of 5 stars What a sexy set-up!.......1999-09-01

An eccentric bestselling author leaves his villa to a prissy schoolteacher and an ex-marine, both aspiring writers. They have to share the opulent home until one of them finishes a novel, and "wins" the house. I LOVED this book. The characters really come to life, and it's fun to watch them battle with lust, ambition, and each other.

      4 out of 5 stars Carried Away...........2003-01-18

This book is pretty good and only takes a few hours to read. Like others in The "Wrong Bed" series it's shockingly funny. The wrong bed scene is hilarious.

The subplot with Vivian & Eric is a bit too much, is this plot from another book the author wrote? They need their own book, if they don't already have it, to take care of their unfinished business.

This is Christy & Trevor's story and too much of Viv & Eric's baggage is all tangled up in the main characters relationship.

3 out of 5 stars I read this in one day but I did debate on finishing it.......2002-04-12

I just really didn't like the main character Christy. I thought it was funny how they made the bride Kate seem snivelling and conniving for trying to bring secondary characters Viv and Eric together. Christy was doing everything in her power to keep them apart which I only took as her being jealous and manipulative. Jeez with a friend like her for relationship support you don't need enemies. Kauffman tries to redeem her a bit by telling her friend when she takes her husband back and moves to sweden she is happy for them but I still think she is jealous. And her insecurity about relationships is so ridiculous it doesn't sound like she had gotten hurt herself to make her act this way it was all second hand info that made her shy away from relationships and her fear of lightning ugh. I found nothing strong ahout her character. I really couldn't believe that Trevor would stay with an insecure whining workaholic lije Christy unless he was masochistic. I gave this 3 stars because some of the dialogue and scenes were quite funny if I could have just gotten past the annoying jealous main character.
