Book Description
Is it really possible to change the structure and function of the brain, and in so doing alter how we think and feel? The answer is a resounding yes. In late 2004, leading Western scientists joined the Dalai Lama at his home in Dharamsala, India, to address this very question–and in the process brought about a revolution in our understanding of the human mind. In this fascinating and far-reaching book, Wall Street Journal science writer Sharon Begley reports on how cutting-edge science and the ancient wisdom of Buddhism have come together to show how we all have the power to literally change our brains by changing our minds. These findings hold exciting implications for personal transformation.
For decades, the conventional wisdom of neuroscience held that the hardware of the brain is fixed and immutable–that we are stuck with what we were born with. As Begley shows, however, recent pioneering experiments in neuroplasticity, a new science that investigates whether and how the brain can undergo wholesale change, reveal that the brain is capable not only of altering its structure but also of generating new neurons, even into old age. The brain can adapt, heal, renew itself after trauma, and compensate for disability.
Begley documents how this fundamental paradigm shift is transforming both our understanding of the human mind and our approach to deep-seated emotional, cognitive, and behavioral problems. These breakthroughs show that it is possible to reset our happiness meter, regain the use of limbs disabled by stroke, train the mind to break cycles of depression and OCD, and reverse age-related changes in the brain. They also suggest that it is possible to teach and learn compassion, a key step in the Dalai Lama’s quest for a more peaceful world. But as we learn from studies performed on Buddhist monks, an important component in changing the brain is to tap the power of mind and, in particular, focused attention. This is the classic Buddhist practice of mindfulness, a technique that has become popular in the West and that is immediately available to everyone.
With her extraordinary gift for making science accessible, meaningful, and compelling, Sharon Begley illuminates a profound shift in our understanding of how the brain and the mind interact. This tremendously hopeful book takes us to the leading edge of a revolution in what it means to be human.

'Focus & Attention.".......2007-09-29
This book is based in part on an Oct.2004 meeting bewtween the Dalai Lama & a group of western neurologists & psychologists to discuss the mutability of the human brain. The main positives of this book are that it is meticulously researched, & yet concise. But, despite the title it is not a self-help book. One should not expect any life altering experiences. This is a history of neuro-plasticity, a cerebral trait discovered by neuro-scientific experiments some twenty years ago. The books central message is that the brain/mind can change when we want it to. The techniques of mental discipline can be learned, & our negative traits reduced. Here eastern philosophy & meditation meets western neuro-science. When the reader is interested in the latest developments for treating dysfunction & depression, or in the mental deterioration brought by aging this is a good place to start. Basically, the adult brain retains much of the plasticity of the developing brain, to change the circuitry that weaves neurons into the networks that allow us to think, feel, dream, remember, & suffer. Some findings show that changes can occur by certain mental activities: like learning a language, or playing a musical instrument. To a degree, the neuro-science does blend with the buddhist belief that our reality can be created by our own thoughts & projections. I have learned that meditation can truly help alter ones feelings, especially in dealing with grief & depression. The book explains in detail how various experiments, training methods, & therapies can change the adult brain. It has shown a remarkable ability to cope with unexpected changes, like blindness, recovering from a stroke, etc. The crucial changes in the brain can willfully overcome neural problems like dyslexia, etc by changing its own circuitry. However, the book does not actually answer all of the questions it poses. I was also a bit taken back that the Dalai Lama would condone animal testing? His statment that the larger human community would benefit from the experiments felt expedient to me. Still, this is a four star book for all the data it contains.
Surprising science: new about neuroplasticity. .......2007-09-06
For nearly a century, scientific dogma held that the brain is immutable, fixed by genes and early upbringing. Wall Street Journal science writer Sharon Begley recently visited the frontiers of neuroscience and returned with a news flash: The dogma is wrong. Researchers have discovered that the brain remains plastic, lifelong. This creates new frontiers: Stroke victims can rewire their brains using challenging exercises; deaf people can repurpose dormant auditory cortexes for other tasks; and blind people can begin to "see" patterns of Braille dots using a seemingly dead visual cortex. Suspecting that they were on to a general pattern, researchers soon looked for similar changes in "normal" brains. Working repetitively on your golf swing, playing the piano or learning a language, they found, also change your brain in lasting, important ways, as does practicing compassion toward others. Begley arrives with heavyweight friends: a foreword by the Dalai Lama and a preface by Daniel Goleman of Emotional Intelligence. If you want to understand how the brain keeps working, and how to make yours do more of what you want it to, we think you should start here. Your brain will thank you.
Change your Life.......2007-08-23
Reading this book will change your life by providing scientific proof that humans can change their brains through meditation. The book is readily accessible to the non-scientific/technical reader and the sections involving the Dalai Lama are fascinating. Those interested in neuroscience, meditation, improving one's quality of life, or in the mysteries of the brain will enjoy this book. Educators and parents will also will find this book as inspiration because it suggests a radical new approach to educating and developing young minds.
Understanding our brain.......2007-07-12
Personal renewal through understanding how the brain works is a subject I am very interested in. This book gets you into the science behind this most promising area of new understanding. It is a subject we all need to know more about - science has learned so much about it in the last 15 years - and this book is a very good place to begin your study of this most important developing area of knowledge.
stunning.......2007-07-05
Train your Mind, Change your Brain is a fascinating look at new discoveries in neuroplasticity and their relation to Buddhist practice. Probably the most salient thing with which I came away from this book is the sense of man's self-determinacy and ability to improve himself. In the age-old debate between heredity and environment, the book highlights new discoveries weighing in heavily on the side of environment. Victor Frankl would be proud.
While the information given is often in relation specifically to Buddhist meditation practice, there is very little material here that is not directly applicable to the contemplative tradition of any religion. For that matter, most of what is presented here does not posit religious beliefs at all - for instance, how exploitation of neuroplasticity can correct dyslexia, help people recover use of paralyzed limbs after strokes, etc.; and how continued research into neuroplasticity may help reverse the mental/neural effects of aging.
Begley writes in a very accessible way - the book was quite readable even for a layman like me. It does help to have a basic knowledge of the principles of Buddhism before starting with this book - I'd recommend reading The Art of Happiness by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Howard Cutler as background.

Book Description
In 1991, when her daughter’s rare, hand-carved harp was stolen, Lisby Mayer’s familiar world of science and rational thinking turned upside down. After the police failed to turn up any leads, a friend suggested she call a dowser–a man who specialized in finding lost objects. With nothing to lose–and almost as a joke–Dr. Mayer agreed. Within two days, and without leaving his Arkansas home, the dowser located the exact California street coordinates where the harp was found.
Deeply shaken, yet driven to understand what had happened, Mayer began the fourteen-year journey of discovery that she recounts in this mind-opening, brilliantly readable book. Her first surprise: the dozens of colleagues who’d been keeping similar experiences secret for years, fearful of being labeled credulous or crazy.
Extraordinary Knowing is an attempt to break through the silence imposed by fear and to explore what science has to say about these and countless other “inexplicable” phenomena. From Sigmund Freud’s writings on telepathy to secret CIA experiments on remote viewing, from leading-edge neuroscience to the strange world of quantum physics, Dr. Mayer reveals a wealth of credible and fascinating research into the realm where the mind seems to trump the laws of nature.
She does not ask us to believe. Rather she brings us a book of profound intrigue and optimism, with far-reaching implications not just for scientific inquiry but also for the ways we go about living in the world.
Customer Reviews:
Extraordinary Knowing.......2007-09-25
Finally, a book that reviews the scientific evidence for the existence of extra-ordinary events. It is disturbing to see how scientists, under the guise of skepticism, have refused to look at well-designed studies that, unfortunately for them, challenge their perception of the world AS THEY WOULD LIKE IT TO BE. Skepticism is certainly healthy, but prejudice is not. To decide beforehand that events that appear to not quite follow natural laws are totally unworthy of study is simply not good science. In this book Elizabeth Lloyd Mayer points us to the many high-quality studies (and scientists) that have been simply ignored by mainstream science. Reading this book should certainly open your eyes to the variety of human experience that modern science both rejects and neglects.
I knew you would read this book ; ).......2007-06-07
Mayer takes on a taboo subject - often ridiculed by the religious AND the scientific communities but for different reasons. The scientists -because it is difficult to explain how esp works. The religious -because if humans were to develop their esp abilities -then we would all be prophets.
This book is filled with interesting anecdotes, experiments, ideas, and people who figure prominently in the field of esp practice and esp research. If you are interested in the topics of psychic healing, subliminal messages, meditation, premonition, intuition, dreams, remote viewing, dowsing, and why Sigmund Freud was not fond of music (and more!)- this is the book for you. Read with an open mind. There is a notes section and an index.
Moves discussion into the new millenium.......2007-05-14
This book is courageous in its sharing of the author's personal journey toward a greater understanding of our complete and yet mysterious humanity, backed up by scrupulous clinical and research data. She takes the idea that we are more than we can ever really know about ourselves consciously out of the age of gullible new age mysticism, and puts it in the middle of thinking people's daily contemplation, challenging everyone from the church to psychologists, to even physicists to take on her incredible yet undeniable assertions about the unlmited frontier of human consciousness which she leads us to. The author died right after completing this book, yet this book has an important and exciting message for humanity that needs to be carried forward without her. It is the perfect antidote to all the fervent God-haters of late, injecting awe, humility and intelligence into the discussion of where we have been, and where we are going--to a place where God and science meet.
where the beef?.......2007-05-13
The author makes good use of describing multiple studies that support some amazing mental powers that the human mind appears to be capable of performing. Unfortunately, none of the studies are sufficiently referenced to allow an interested reader to review the actual data. A more detailed account of the experimental set up, control group, number of participants, etc. along with the actual data would have allowed a skeptical reader to assess the validity independently, rather than accepting the "highly statistically significant" conclusion the author presents. Extraordinary claims do require extraordinary evidence. While I believe the evidence may be there, the author does not make the "ordinary" effort to share this important information with her readers. Even an appendix with more detail would have been useful. I was left wanting for more than just an appetizer, how about some real beef!
Excellent .......2007-05-09
Lisby Mayer lived long enough to complete the manuscript for this excellent story of how an extraordinary event changed her life. Must reading.

Customer Reviews:
Fascinating designer!.......2007-09-01
I had heard of Florence Broadhurst but didn't know a lot about her. I read this book cover to cover (granted, it is not that thick) without putting it down, it was so interesting! I never realised the amount of scandal involved in one of Australia's greatest designers of the time. I found her life fascinating and her wallpaper designs so beautiful. I did feel that the book could have shown more designs but it was excellent as an introduction to Florence Broadhurst and her more popular wallpapers.
The Queen of Wallpaper!.......2007-06-27
This book is perfect for the design fanatic- especially prints and home decor. The cover is made of a sweet fabric and seems precious. The inside features amazing color images of Florence Broadhurst's one of a kind work. There are many great wallpapers and prints that span the art deco style to modern geometrics. As a painter I found the patterns fascinating. Makes for a great gift.
beautiful collection of designs.......2007-05-06
All in all I really enjoyed the book. I thought that the title built up the story to be more than it was, I could have used a lot more text (Keep all the photos though). There wasn't as much detail into Florences life as I would have liked. But the book introduced me to another great designer and all her (or someone elses) great work. A wonderful reference for designers

Book Description
A groundbreaking, proven approach for successfully dia--gnosing and treating the mil-lions with hypothyroidism. Depression, weight gain, fatigue, headaches, memory lapses, hair loss-these are just some of the vague, often debilitating symptoms that plaguethe more than 13 million patients with hypothyroidism. The typical blood test for diagnosis is often inaccurate, leaving many to suffer through ineffective treatment. But now, there is a solution: Dr. Blanchard's groundbreaking program draws on emerging research, medical facts, and three decades of clinical experiences as an endocrinologist. This individualized program uses questionnaires and charts to help diagnose sufferers through symptoms, not only lab results. It then treats patients of all ages with the safe but little used T3 hormone in combination with the more common T4 hormone. Also including specific nutritional advice and alternative treatments, this is the one program for sufferers of hypothyrodism that really works!
Download Description
Depression, fatigue, headaches, memory lapses, weight gain, constipation, cold intolerance, slowed reflexes, hair loss, menstrual abnormalities—these are some of the vague, sometimes debilitating symptoms that, in varying combinations, plague more than 13 million patients with hypothyroidism. Unfortunately, many patients with hypothyroidism go for months to years, from doctor to doctor, from test to tests without being properly diagnosed. This is because the TSH blood test, considered the gold standard for diagnosis, is simply not an accurate indicator of hypothryoidism. Perhaps more perplexing, millions who are properly diagnosed find themselves undergoing often ineffective treatments for their disorder. At last, there is a solution: Dr. Blanchard's groundbreaking treatment program draws on emerging research, medical facts, and three decades of clinical experiences as an endocrinologist. It's an individualized program that uses questionnaires and charts to help diagnose sufferers through symptoms, not lab results, and treats patients of all ages with the safe, but little used T3 hormone in the best combination with the more common T4 hormone, as well as with specific nutritional advice and alternative treatments that really work!
Customer Reviews:
Missing Some Important Information.......2007-09-10
Dr. Blanchard has some good ideas about how to balance T4 and T3, but the book was
lacking information I had hoped it would contain. The human thyroid actually produces
10% T3, and 90% T4 -- so I'm not quite sure why Dr. Blanchard arrived at the 2%
solution -- perhaps most of his patients still have functioning thyroids, but functioning
at a lower than normal level.
There is almost no discussion of patients who have NON-functioning
thyroid glands, thyroidectomies, or myxedema. As a patient with a non-functioning
thyroid, and also having experienced myxedema due to lack of adequate medication, I found
this book was not very useful. There was no discussion of a full physiological replacement
dosage. I am unfortunately familiar with the symptoms of myxedema, and aware than incompetent
physicians are capable of inducing myxedema in a severely hypothyroid patient by relying on the
TSH test and underdosing the patient.
Also, I would like to have seen more discussion on the MANY types of thyroid
antibodies, and how these can affect the type of medication and dosage a
patient needs to feel well. I would also like to have read a discussion on why
some people need a higher than normal dosage to feel well -- due to poor stomach
absorption, thyroid resistance, anemia, etc. For reasons not well understood, other individuals
do not adequately convert T4 to T3 in their bodies; thus they require high amounts
of T3. There was no discussion on this point, either.
Something I had expected in the book (from other reviews) was a discussion of the physical
symptoms of inadequate or excessive T4, and T3 levels. Instead, the reader was
referred to the blood test again.
So for those patients with severe hypothyroidism, or non-functioning glands, you're still
on your own to figure out the best treatment regimen. The 2% T3 plan is
just too simple, and this book offers no explanation of what a full physiological
replacement dosage should be.
Great Resource.......2007-09-03
Geared toward helping you get the most out of your thyroid treatment. Best for people already diagnosed.
Balancing T3 and T4.......2007-06-04
This book is quite good, really focuses on learning to balance T3/T4 not only with lab tests but also based on how you FEEL regardless of what the labs say. Very interesting read.
Another great book for Thyroid.......2007-05-09
Read this along with Mary Shomons book and you are on your way to learning what you need to know to manage your thyroid disease. I was shocked at what I didn't know after being ill for years. Read it, re-read it and memorize it. Then ask your dr. questions. You can control your disease and symptoms if you have the knowledge needed.
Outstanding.......2007-02-15
I just what to say thanks for writing the book. I learned a lot about hypothroidism. I'v had it for 10 years. I never new about T3 free. Now I have read more books on thryroid problems. This one is the best. It really tells it like it is. Great information, and what you need to do to get better. All I can say is just read it you will be surprised.

Book Description
Unlocks the secrets of one of the most powerful of Chinese healing arts
Developed over millennia in China, qigong (literally, life force + mastery, or refinement) is a set of techniques used to increase your vitality, longevity, and sexual potency as well as achieve and maintain optimal health and inner peace. In the groundbreaking The Healing Promise of Qi, Dr. Roger Jahnke, internationally respected doctor of Chinese medicine and author of the bestselling The Healer Within, clearly and simply explains the concepts of qigong in practical terms.
With the help of 125 superbly rendered illustrations, he describes a multitude of simple qigong tools, practices, and techniques for accessing and utilizing the incredible power of qi. Rather than focus on a particular form of qigong, Dr. Jahnke presents concise, easy-to-follow techniques from among the more than 25 traditional and modern forms that he has mastered and taught to thousands of people across the United States and Canada.
Customer Reviews:
A Seminal Work.......2007-07-08
After a number of readings, it is clear that this book is both broad and deep. It is very accessible for those just beginning their investigations into Qi, energy and personal cultivation. AND it is among the most penetrating books for those who seek deeper knowledge of wellbeing, energetics and even the eternal nature. There is fact (health, healing, physiology and quantum), theory (Chinese Medicine, Chinese philosophy, Daoism, Buddhism), inspiration (the most profound medicine is within, the eternal radiant spirit can be revealed), story (tales of a probably fictional mountain monastery and probably real Qi masters the author has met and studied with). There is also a profound vision for the potential of the human species as the cultivation of our deeper nature is more widely pursued.
As both a doctor of Chinese medicine and a long time teacher of Qigong and Tai Chi, the author has experience, authority and very alluring language. The book is easy and fun to read. It could be opened anywhere. One endorsement, from the author of Manifesto For A New Medicine, James Gordon MD says "I look forward to referring to -- and using -- this book for years to come." And Joan Borysenko, author of many books on the Mind/Body revolution calls it "A gem that you will treasure for the rest of your life." Deepak Chopra calls Dr Jahnke, "a wise teacher and healer" and his Qigong "simple yet profound".
Nowhere have we seen (and this is mentioned in a number of the Amazon reviews) such a clear map of the territory of Qigong, Tai Chi and the cultivation of personal power and virtue.
I have also appreciated, very much, Dr Jahnke's first book, The Healer Within The Healer Within: Using Traditional Chinese Techniques To Release Your Body's Own Medicine *Movement *Massage *Meditation *Breathing.
These are seminal works in the emerging new Quantum world of energy, empowerment and self-reliance. Qigong, it appears, is an accessible portal to our maximum potential and a method to access our deepest power -- simply yet profoundly.
One of the best books out there- now my standard textbook for students........2007-06-14
Roger Jahnke would never refer to himself as a master, but i respect, appreciate, and *believe* in his sincerity and commitment to the art enough to refer to him as such. i honestly can't say enough about this book. it's the simplest and clearest book i've ever read on the subject (and i have read more than 2 dozen), yet its content is thorough and comprehensive to the point that i now use this as my standard textbook for my qigong students.
he put into 1 book what it took me years to gather and distill from numerous teachers and books, and he did a better job of integrating it all into a useable (and changeable) framework.
what puts this book over the top for me is his beautiful, almost lyrical, storytelling ability. it really makes the book a pleasurable read, especially in the middle section of the book devoted to the 10 phases of Qi cultivation.
reading this book gave me faith in the power and development of qigong right here in this country. i trully believe that one no longer has to travel to china in order to learn and experience the greatest depths of this internal art. it's here now!
i've never met Master Jahnke, but i certainly hope to someday. and even if i never do get the opportunity to meet him, i will always consider him one of my best teachers.
Beautifully written and informative.......2007-04-22
A beautifully written panorama of the history and contemporary state of qi.
This book is also eminently practical and inspiring.
The author cites past masters of qi and documents meetings with contemporary masters that he has met.
An excellent read and a must for all those who study/practice tai chi and qigong, or those who are thinking of studying the subject.
Recommended!

maybe i am missing something, i believe this to be a bloated-book, could have been more concise. bought it based on other reviews.
A brief comment.......2005-12-18
This is a very good, well written, and detailed introduction to qi gong. The different aspects of the art are presented, including relating it to western medical theory. The author writes with very little ego and the art is presented fairly and objectively. Overall a fine intro to the subject and well deserving of the five star ratings people are giving it.

Why do otherwise intelligent individuals form seething masses of idiocy when they engage in collective action? Why do financially sensible people jump lemming-like into hare-brained speculative frenzies--only to jump broker-like out of windows when their fantasies dissolve? We may think that the Great Crash of 1929, junk bonds of the '80s, and over-valued high-tech stocks of the '90s are peculiarly 20th century aberrations, but Mackay's classic--first published in 1841--shows that the madness and confusion of crowds knows no limits, and has no temporal bounds. These are extraordinarily illuminating, and, unfortunately, entertaining tales of chicanery, greed and naivete. Essential reading for any student of human nature or the transmission of ideas.
In fact, cases such as Tulipomania in 1624--when Tulip bulbs traded at a higher price than gold--suggest the existence of what I would dub "Mackay's Law of Mass Action:" when it comes to the effect of social behavior on the intelligence of individuals, 1+1 is often less than 2, and sometimes considerably less than 0.
Book Description
First published in 1841, Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds is often cited as the best book ever written about market psychology. This Harriman House edition includes Charles Mackay's account of the three infamous financial manias - John Law's Mississipi Scheme, the South Sea Bubble, and Tulipomania.Between the three of them, these historic episodes confirm that greed and fear have always been the driving forces of financial markets, and, furthermore, that being sensible and clever is no defence against the mesmeric allure of a popular craze with the wind behind it.In writing the history of the great financial manias, Charles Mackay proved himself a master chronicler of social as well as financial history. Blessed with a cast of characters that covered all the vices, gifted a passage of events which was inevitably heading for disaster, and with the benefit of hindsight, he produced a record that is at once a riveting thriller and absorbing historical document. A century and a half later, it is as vibrant and lurid as the day it was written. For modern-day investors, still reeling from the dotcom crash, the moral of the popular manias scarcely needs spelling out. When the next stock market bubble comes along, as it surely will, you are advised to recall the plight of some of the unfortunates on these pages, and avoid getting dragged under the wheels of the careering bandwagon yourself.

It's only a slice of the book!.......2007-06-27
I first discovered this book 40 years ago, and especially loved its description of the witchcraft hysteria. This is a lovely little edition, but it is only a small subset of the entire work, dealing specifically in three economic bubbles. It would have been good reading in 2000.
Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds.......2007-05-18
Years ago, in one of my MBA courses the Prof. mentioned this book and alluded to sections within the text how events which occured years ago are still applicable and effective today. My curiosity was picked so I searched for a copy and was able to obtain one at a local library. The reading was engrossing to say the least. The book deal with mass hysteria and mass public manipulation for political and financial gains. The events described are of massive proportions with world wide application and implication. After reading the book a big question mark floats over society where it allows itself over and over to fall on mass to charlatans, liars and deceivers who manage to lure the public to believe and trust their sordid tales and flim-flam to the point of selling their souls for a piece of the allusive dream. I recently found an old copy of the term paper I wrote on the book and decided to add a copy to my personal library. Rereading the book brought back the memories of class discussions and the interesting events mentioned. The books givs the reader a better understanding of how major world events take shape from rumors and minor incidents. A very easy read with a great and event filled story line. Should be read by all.
The Book that proved the importance of the CROWD - READ IT BEFORE INVESTING!!!!!.......2007-03-15
If you are a stock market investor, than this book must appear as one of your top 10 books to read. Investors really have no choice but to read this book because unlike any book you will ever read, this book teaches you about the CROWD. What motivates the crowd, and what causes people to join the crowd. If you were to ask any of the famous investors you have read about, every one of them is aware of the importance of CROWD PSYCHOLOGY. Warren Buffett has always talked about Mr. Market, which he learned from Benjamin Graham.
Now having said this let me tell you quickly what this book is about. MacKay in a brilliant, and in an interesting manner takes you through 700 pages of mass buying panics from centuries ago. These include The Witch Mania (100 pages) in the 15th and 16th century. The Crusades (100 pages), Alchemy (160 pages), and the Poisoners- hey, poisoning people was a big thing centuries ago- remember Napoleon.
The big buying binge that most people recognize is the South Sea Tulip Craze, where the participants bid up the price of tulips, yes tulips to the equivalent cost of houses and more. We're not done, MacKay goes through many, many more crazes, panics, and buying binges. All of these stories involve the CROWD. Extraordinary Popular Delusions... has survived the test of time. We do not know if anything being written today, or any studies being researched currently will be able to stand the time test? We only know that MacKay's book has.
Is the book interesting?
Yes it's fascinating, but you have to be interested in this subject. If you are in the financial markets you have no to STUDY, NOT READ this book. I say this because I have been a money manager and history buff for 35 years. If I did not live through the modern equivalent of MacKay's book, frankly I wouldn't believe half the stuff that is in this book, which is presented as truth.
The reality is I have seen MacKay's explanations work out in my own lifetime, and so have you. A few 20th century equivalents are in order:
1) INTERNET STOCK MAREKT CRAZE: 1999 - 2000
Wow, I did an analysis of the market value, of a major Internet stock in play at the time of the craze. The stock was representative of hundreds of other companies participating in the run-up in value. One day, I discovered that this Internet stock's market value was the equivalent of ten major corporations combined. These companies included IBM, GM, Ford, Chrysler, Electronic Data Processing, JC Penny, Sears, and others, all combined. It couldn't be. Did I calculate wrong? It was true, and the number was getting bigger every day.
Over $1.4 trillion dollars had been committed to Internet stocks by some of the smartest savviest people in the world. When it was over, that $1.4 trillion was reduced to under $100 billion. Over 90 plus percent of the value had simply disappeared. This was Extraordinary Popular Delusions all over again, and you lived through it too.
2) Personal Note: During the Internet Craze, I was re-tooling by taking courses at Harvard University. Every five years, I try to do this. I would drive up once a week and spend eight hours in financial classes with some of America's truly outstanding teaching professors to see what's new in academia that hasn't hit the money management industry yet. These world-renowned professors all got swept into the Internet stock market craze. They personally lost substantial pieces of their net worth. Every one of them was claiming that we were in a new age. They were throwing out their financial training out the window.
These were Professors who had read every page of MacKay's book, underlined it, annotated it, and even memorized sections. This is what you need to know. The first words that come out of a person's mouth involved in mass hysteria are - THIS TIME IT WILL BE DIFFERENT. It's a dead giveaway that we are in a POPULAR DELUSION.
3) The American Invasion of Iraq: Forget whether the President was right or wrong. Every intelligence agency in the world believed that the Iraqi's had weapons of mass destruction. David Kay, perhaps the smartest man in government believed it. This again, is an example of the crowd psychology in action.
4) Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba- President Kennedy as smart a man as they come got swept up into the crowd psychology believing along with everyone else that 1500 poorly trained Cubans could land on a beach in Cuba, and then suddenly without support, walk their way into Havana picking up ordinary people on the countryside who would swell their ranks and allow these expatriates to overthrow the Castro regime. These were the smartest men in government that believed this.
The list goes on and on, and if you the reader live long enough, you will see yourself swept up in these instances of mass hysteria. If two Presidents of the United States can get caught up in crowd psychology, we all better be on the lookout for it. Good luck.
Richard Stoyeck
Why our kids MUST still study European History a.k.a. 'The History of Dead White Males' .......2007-03-08
While I agree with several reviewers who comment that this book is a bit uneven--several chapters are much weaker than others--overall, this was an eye-popping book for me, for several reasons. A reader of some key chapters in this book, hears that most vital history lesson of all time with a rarely experienced degree of punch. The lesson? (One whose punchline goes way beyond its utility to investors and speculators...the part of the book many reviewers here hone in on). That mankind repeats its past mistakes, atrocities, and stupidities with amazing regularity and amnesia. Why does this book stand out in driving this lesson home? Because it catalogues in exquisitely gory detail, a long list of lessons we never learn from. Each sorry chapter of human history is replayed in a vivid blow by blow account. Each tale immediately reminds the reader of a similar one that preceded or followed it in time. Each tale has a pivotal turning point, which signals a shift from mob hysteria to mob self awareness. Following this turning point is a series of communal actions and avowals meant to cleanse the community in which the folly occurred of all its remnants, and immunize it from a re-infection by the same disease....But then comes the next chapter, and the next, and the next. The lesson that's driven home is--we keep going back over and over.
There are two chapters in this book that stood out in particular-- the one on the Witch Hunt fever that swept Puritan New England in the 18th century, and the one describing the Christian Crusades of the late Middle Ages. The first is the quintessential case in point of historical amnesia. The very men who barely a generation before fled to America to escape religious persecution, become the ridiculous kangaroo court inquisitors of helpless women accused of "witchcraft", and carry on their kangaroo proceedings without a trace of insight into their glaring hypocrisy, paganism, or fascism. Men barely done with thanking their new land for its gift to them of tolerance and due process, decide their fellow humans' fate by the famous test: "if she drowns she's innocent...if she doesn't we burn her as a witch". The second tale, of the Crusades, stands out in its subject matter, as particularly salient to modern Christians who (justly) cringe at the mob fanaticism overtaking many Muslim lands. We are forced to look in the mirror and see...there went we. The message is: THEY who terrorize us are being dangerously "washed" in the brain. But we too were for well over a century the inflamed cannon fodder of craven pseudo-holy cleric imposters and politicians. The CONTENT that drives current terror is religion, but the PURPOSE is that timeless human motive--greed and power.
The author recounts these sorry tales with a dispassionate prose, relentlessly unsparing of detail. Though dense at times as reviewers pointed out, I found his style really quite eloquent and effective. He appeals to his readers in an intimate and trusting tone, as a historian speaking to readers who are enlightened men--who share his ironic verdicts on past stupidities, and join him in affirming that, finally, enabled by unvarnished full accountings of our past, "we modern men will never be such fools again!" He occasionally adds a reality check: ".....will we?" Of course, the book's 160 year age gives us the answer of time......The answer? Well, as so nicely put by a contemporary social commentator named Borat (whose movie has a theme similar to MacKay's, applied to mob fanatics of the present day) ...."NOOOOOOT !!!!"
First 100 pages good, but the rest of the book was slow.......2006-09-27
I recommend Edward Chancellor's "Devil Take the Hindmost" instead of this book. I enjoyed this book for first hundred pages (financial speculation), but I was not interested in the later sections of the book.

This is about Gods work through this amazing healer in a such a remote island, Kyriakides nailed this one !!!!!!great book!!an eye opener to spiritual seekers!!!!!
a deeper view of the world we inhabit.......2007-01-03
I have often advised young people to travel the world, not as a tourist but for extended visits to immerse themselves in other cultures. If nothing else, the traveler encounters a diversity of beings and ways of living that change, to a greater or lesser degree, how one sees his or her normal life. New doors of perception open, new senses are enlivened, and when one returns "home" it is never quite the same as before. And that's what this book does to the spiritual or simply curious traveler.
Through young Markides' eyes, we stay at the home of a true magus, that is, one who understands how the life force operates beyond our normal perceptions. For the magus, it's somewhat of a workaday world of dealing with elemental beings, karmic energies (which he sometimes consciously "takes on" as a gift of mercy to others), and other forces of which we normal people are most often quite unaware. A magus, or magician, may be black (harmful) or white (helpful). In this case, get to see how a conscientious, helpful healer operates in a commonplace setting, surrounded by regular people. No pointy star-spangled hats or boiling pots of newts and goat hooves here. You'd walk right by him on the street.
This is a fascinating story sincerely chronicled by the author. We're given a peek behind the curtain of miracles and get a sense of how they happen, of what it takes (beyond the typical waving of a wand or sprinkling of stardust) to restore balance and healing where chaos and illness have prevailed. For anyone interested in the idea of natural or psychic healing, and to see how it happens in plausible, everyday circumstances, you'll really appreciate this story. Especially in this age of preposterous medical costs and the pharmaceutical shroud blanketing our health care system, it's encouraging to encounter a practice of real healing knowledge that's not only priceless, but free.
Confirms and Provokes..........2005-03-02
Have you ever looked into the topic of energetic healing? Have you ever looked at biographies and autobiographies of healers? I have. I've read lots of them. And the "Magus of Strovolos", which is about "Stylianos Atteshlis", a Greek Cypriot healer who lived until the early 1990's, did what no single book has done that I've read so far. It tied everything together and proposed a truly complete view of things, from reincarnation and Karma, to healing, astral projection, to philosophy, to ethics necessary to move into the work. And, it was absolutely hilarious at times...
But before you decide that "funny" isn't a good thing in a book that covers this topic, let me tell you that it's not funny through and through. It's deadly serious at times. And the subject matter is so thought- provoking that I've found myself reading this book (and the subsequent two that are now out of print), several times, just to be sure that I didn't miss anything.
It's THAT good...
The Origenal.......2004-07-31
If you have discovered this great book and can bring yourself to believe in it you have much to congratulate yourself on.

Book Description
Afterlife Encounters is the culmination of the Afterlife Encounters Survey, Arcangel's five-year, international survival study. Arcangel presents all-new, first-hand accounts from individuals who've experienced visitations from the dead. Afterlife Encounters reveals the results of that study and, for the first-time, offers a systematic categorization of such encounters, explaining when these encounters are most likely to occur, and what type of apparition is likely to appear. Arcangel's eye-opening conclusion is that Afterlife Encounters provide lasting comfort to those who are mourning the loss of a loved one.

AFTERLIFE ENCOUNTERS: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Experiences.......2007-03-20
This is one of my ABSOLUTE Favorites. Dianne Arcangel is a highly credible woman and an excellent researcher. Her book is a fantastic collection of personal accounts. Her writing makes this an easy and fascinating read. As a retired HOSPICE worker, myself, I am so well aware of experiences that people who are dying will share with us. These experiences are so numerous and well-doumented by hospice workers. Reading this book will uplift your spirt and will help you through the grieving process. This is a must for anyone who has lost a loved one. I am so looking forward to Dianne writing another book.
Can't wait to get to the other side.......2006-07-12
i bought this book for myself and couldn't put it down. Found myself crying with the absolute joy of what we can expect. then i proceeded to buy 3 more copies for family members. no one will be sorry about buying this book. I lost a beloved niece by suicide in 1986 and often wondered what would happen to her after death. This book makes me believe that she's waiting for me, along with my beloved dog Charlie.
Reasoned approach.......2006-03-15
This book is one of the few on the subject that actually takes a reasoned and scientifically valid approach. There is none of the gee whiz factor here---just many years of study.
Visits from the other side.......2006-01-30
Paranormal phenomena, such as survival of bodily death, can be difficult to swallow without personal experience. The very mention of such personal experiences in polite conversation is often met with suspicion.
While doing hospice work, the author worked with many people who received visits from newly departed loved ones. Though most found these experiences comforting, some were taken aback by their seeming unreality. The book was written to validate such experiences so that people can focus on the comfort rather than the excoriating self-doubt and fear of going crazy.
The backbone of the book is her study, which categorizes different kinds of apparitions, the circumstances in which they occur, and personality profiles of people experiencing them. Her wealth of anecdotal examples weaves through and animates the entire book.
Ms. Arcangel takes special care to rule out more mundane poo-pooing tossed out by "skeptics" to trivialize and poo-poo these phenomena. What makes these visits even more believable to me is their extreme specificity and personal nature, though my skepticism is softened by my own personal experience with such visits.
She describes different kinds of mediums and documents her own conversations with some of them.
Her writing is clear and easy to read, and backed by solid scholarship. My only complaint is the vaguely written subject heads in the table of contents, which necessitates reading it from front to back rather than nibbling away at it, as I am so wont to. Interested above all in her analysis, I found myself skipping some of the examples.
This book is useful both for parapsychology novices and for people well versed in this field.
Comforting and Challenging.......2005-10-28
Perhaps the best evidence of after death communication is that ordinary people have been experiencing them since the beginning of recorded history. In this book, Dianne Arcangel reveals the results of her five-year international survival study by using real stories from real people as she catagorizes the data. Both the stories and the data are rather amazing. If that was all the book was about, it would be well worth reading, but it isn't. Also fascinating to read about is her participation in the Afterlife Watching experiments involving mediumship research. Another captivating section of the book is her private discernment(reading) with well known medium George Anderson.
Even if you are a sceptic, read this book. It may or may not change your opinion, but you will be better informed.

The G.O.D. Experiments: How Science Is Discovering God In Everything, Including Us
ASIN: 1571744592 |
Book Description
Every Monday night millions of Americans tune into Medium, NBC's new hit drama featuring Allison DuBois, an ordinary woman who helps police solve baffling crimes through her ability to communicate with the dead. What most don't know is that this fictional character is based on a true-life medium named Allison DuBois, who is a consultant to the show. For the past four years, DuBois has been the subject of rigorous scientific experiments conducted at the University of Arizona by Harvard-trained psychologist Gary Schwartz. The Truth about Medium chronicles many of those experiments and reveals hard laboratory evidence that psychic ability and mediumship are real.
Customer Reviews:
Good for the fact-minded people.......2007-09-16
This was an informative book included with many statistics. I didn't care for the book just for the fact to it was too scientific for my liking, but that's exactly the point of it, so it might be just perfect for you.
More compelling evidence.......2007-08-10
Professor Schwartz has done it again, and this time the book is small, and a nice read to keep by the bed. It is a story about Allison Dubois, the real medium the NBC TV show Medium is based on. While the show is drama and clearly some what fictionalized, the real Allison Dubois story is pretty incredible. The book outlines a series of experiments conducted by Dr. Schwartz with Allison in a variety of situations, from Double Blind experiments to the Long Distance Internet Mediumship Experiment Involving the Double Deceased Paradigm. Sound intriguing? It is. Dr. Schwartz continues to amass compelling evidence of life after death. The writing style is riveting, and the stories are enlightening and educational, as well as entertaining. There is also a section addressing skeptics that is a real eye opener, particularly to those of us who have had dealings with them ourselves. Much like the book the After Life Experiments, the raw data from the experiments are compiled in the appendices in the rear portion of the book.
For those of you into intentions, the book is rife with evidence of "discarnate intentions" and he sums it up in the end with this:
"Is there available evidence provided by research mediums consistent with survival of consciousness after death?"
Absolutely
"Is survival of the consciousness the most promising explanation that accounts for the largest amount of data?"
Clearly
"Do the current experiments provide definitive proof of survival?"
No
"Is it possible to design future experiments that can establish once and for all if the survival of consciousness is real?"
My strong conclusion based on the evidence is yes
"Am I open to discovering in future experiments that the survival of the consciousness hypothesis is mistaken?"
Of course....
And so am I....Great book Gary!
Unethical!.......2007-04-24
Dr. Schwartz, I didn't have a choice of rating your book with NO stars, so I gave it one. You should be ashamed of yourself for exploiting Allison DuBois and her work with you. How dare you promise confidentiality and then betray the very person your book is based on?
