Book Description
Over the last 15 years, the state of inner-city public schools has been in a steep and continuing decline. Since the federal courts began dismantling the landmark ruling in Brown v. Board of Education, segregation of black children has reverted to its highest level since 1968. In many inner-city schools, a stick-and-carrot method of behavioral control traditionally used in prisons is now used with students. Meanwhile, as high-stakes testing takes on pathological and punitive dimensions, liberal education has been increasingly replaced by culturally barren and robotic methods of instruction that would be rejected out of hand by schools that serve the mainstream of society.
Filled with the passionate voices of children, principals, and teachers, and some of the most revered leaders in the black community, The Shame of the Nation pays tribute to those undefeated educators who persist against the odds, but directly challenges the chilling practices now being forced upon our urban systems by the Bush administration. In their place, Kozol offers a humane, dramatic challenge to our nation to fulfill at last the promise made some 50 years ago to all our youngest citizens.

Re-Segregation.......2007-09-26
You must read this book if you are a teacher in the urban American public school machine. This book is especially helpful for those who have not been exposed to cultural groups other than the white-dominant-privileged middle/upper class. You will not believe that these social injustices occur in our so called "democracy."
Not Kozol's Best.......2007-05-30
I wasn't as moved by this book as his others. The book worked hard to make its major point- schooling in America is becoming more and more segregated. It also pushed funding as the answer, almost ignoring others. Worth the time, but not a classic as Savage Inequalities was.
A compelling story, but no solutions.......2007-04-24
In The Shame Of The Nation: The Restoration of Apartheid Schooling In America, Jonathan Kozol writes a convincing argument of the resegregation of children's schools in America. Although his argument is compelling, he leaves the reader feeling helpless because of his lack of solutions to the problem.
Kozol used experiences and stories from his own teaching at schools and from his visits to poor minority schools as evidence for his argument. His work at segregated schools and his experience of resegregation in schools, showed that he has been around for a long time, which proves his wisdom and knowledge. He has brought credibility into his data. He also does not attempt to slander anyone in particular or point at someone to blame for the entire problem. His use of narratives and vignettes of different characters made his story interesting and easy to read. He seemed very honest and reliable because he talked to kids and teachers who gave him their opinions from which he based his evidence upon.
Kozol's accounts and experiences were very eye-opening for me considering I grew up in a middle class area. His research made me look back and examine my own public school experiences, where I had not realized that segregation still existed. Kozol is very successful in convincing the reader that America still faces segregation to this day.
However, as the book came to an end he had yet to provide any solutions for ending segregation in America's public schools. He easily criticized government funded programs and attempts towards reform, but neglected to say what the government could specifically do in order to solve the problem. His negative outlook on their attempts made me feel hopeless that anything could be done. Kozol believed that educational reformers were headed in the wrong direction, but then what is the right direction? This is where Kozol lacks in explanation. If America is taking the wrong turn, then where do the students, teachers, principals, and parents go from here.
segregation.......2007-03-19
This has been a eye opening book for me. Before I read this novel, I had no knowledge there was such a wide gap between schools attended by more minorties versus schools in more middle or upper middle areas. Kozol has established a convincing argument that there needs to be an end to segregation in our school system and a change in the way schools are administered. After reading this book you cannot help but feel sorry for the millions of children who are being left behind despite other efforts.
I recommend reading this book to everyone who lives in the United States; to discover what is happening in our country because many of us have little understanding of what is occuring, even in the same school district. It is an insightful look at our educational system and I look forward to reading more from Jonathan Kozol.
Kozol doesn't get it.......2007-02-27
Kozol, a passionate advocate for children from low-income households, unhappily is left in a time-warp of discredited prescriptions. He is correct in describing the horrible failure of America's urban public schools in terms of its tragic injustice. Unfortunately, Kozol ignores the evidence emerging from a small but growing cohort of high-performing schools that help us define the real problems in our public system. Consider the attributes of the system: local government-run monopolies, dominated by politically powerful trade unions and governed by rotating boards often populated by people who are well-meaning but inexperienced in the management of large, complex organizations. This is not a formula for success. Effective school reform will focus on aligning the interests of the adults in the system around the success of children (accountability, school choice, and money following the child) and clearing away bureaucratic hurdles (site-based management and principals with the power to select staff and lead the organization).
At the end of the day, communities have to ask themselves if it makes sense for them to directly manage schools? Or instead, should they focus on playing the role of watchdog and contract out the responsibility of staffing and running schools to independent organizations that can be hired and fired based on performance (see the writings of Paul T. Hill)? Ask yourself: if our local town governments had day-to-day responsibility for creating, staffing and managing all of the retail services in the community, would our stores be any better run than our schools?
For a better book, read Thernstrom's "No Excuses". Or look up Paul Tough's article in the NYT Magazine, "What It Takes To Make A Student".

Depressed, overworked, or just feelin' old are common enough complaints. But when disparate symptoms such as joint pain, weight gain, and foggy-headedness join the ranks, it's time to think thyroid. As the "throttle" for the body's energy hormones, the thyroid affects every organ and cell; when it's in trouble, any variety of ailments--physical and mental--can occur. Trouble is, physicians are more likely to treat each symptom independently, with pill upon pill, rather than search for a root cause. Bolstered by 25 years of treating patients with low thyroid condition, husband-and-wife team Richard L. Shames, M.D., and Karilee H. Shames, R.N., Ph.D., ably explain the physical and emotional profiles of those diagnosed with the disease, why the proverbial deck is stacked against them, and how each patient can forge an effective path of treatment.
"Consider Thyroid Power a long, personal visit with a caring, prevention-oriented practitioner," state the authors. The journey begins with thyroid basics: how this little hormone-producing tissue operates, signs that things are amiss, how other illnesses compound the problem, and how to determine one's risk for hypothyroidism. Next, the Shameses discuss the labyrinth of diagnostic and treatment issues a patient must endure. Helpful and harmful supplements and environmental factors, repairing the immune system (the origin of thyroid troubles), and a rich, sensitive exploration of holistic healing nicely round out this valuable resource. A brief section titled "Show This to Your Doctor," penned by Richard, perfectly crystallizes the book and provides an effective tool for initiating a patient/physician dialogue. --Liane Thomas

Very helpful.......2007-06-27
I knew my infant son had a thyroid problem, my only problem was convincing the doctors there was a problem. This book is packet with great information and really got me up to speed on the thyroid. The only problem I had with the book was that there wasn't a section dedicated to pediatric thyroid problems and it doesn't list specific ranges for where the thyroid levels should be. Still this helped me do battle with the doctors and I got my son's treatment started.
10 STEPS TO PARADISE.......2007-06-20
I bought this book for my mother who had been diagnosed with thyroid problems. She was so relieved that outside of the quick treatment in the endocrinologist's office, she could, at her leisure, absorb the seriousness of her disease, be reassured she was not alone, and most of all that there were many others just like her ailing but with a road map to new health by truding the road to wellness together by following the ten steps in this book. With renewed determination, she is already onto step one and looking to step two.
Excellent book if you have hashimotos.......2007-06-14
I have been diagnosed with hashimotos for over 12months now and have been buying, borrowing and reading every book I can get my hands on. This book is the best of all I have read. It very comprehensively covers blending traditional medical solutions with "alternative" therapies to achieve optimal health and wellbeing.
Most Comprehensive Book on Thyroid Disease.......2007-01-18
I have read many, many books on hypothyroidism including most of the ones rated as five stars by Amazon.com. This book was the most comprehensive and informative of all of the books I've read. If you're going to read one book, read this one. Not only does it discuss the thyroid and its complications and affect on all body systems, but it goes into detail about blood test levels, tests you should have, mind/body healing, a diet to follow, the level of vitamins and minerals we need on a daily basis, etc. I am the kind of person who needs and likes to have all of the information I can access to help myself. Although I have finally found a doctor that knows as much as me, - for years, I did not. Now my doctor and I share information.
If you have a thyroid problem, this book is well worth your time.
HIGH QUALITY INFORMATION.......2007-01-04
This book has very good discussion on the treatment of (usually) hypothyroid conditions. It tells you how to deal with marginal or non-indicating blood tests, usage habits, etc. I value this book.
Book Description
This classic book, written 17 years ago but still selling more than 13,000 copies every year, has been completely updated and expanded by the author. "I used to drink," writes John Bradshaw,"to solve the problems caused by drinking. The more I drank to relieve my shame-based loneliness and hurt, the more I felt ashamed." Shame is the motivator behind our toxic behaviors: the compulsion, co-dependency, addiction and drive to superachieve that breaks down the family and destroys personal lives. This book has helped millions identify their personal shame, understand the underlying reasons for it, address these root causes and release themselves from the shame that binds them to their past failures.
Customer Reviews:
Good attempt, missed target........2007-08-20
I was given this book by my therapist. Immediately upon reading the book, I found it to be old-fashioned and sexist. For example, on page 4 Bradshaw says, "What a child needs is a firm but understanding caretaker, who needs to be getting her own needs met through her spouse." Further on in the book he talks about how a mother is supposed to bake pies, a daughter is supposed to do the dishes, the son is supposed to save the family from a fire, and the father is supposed to take the family on vacation.
Even disregarding the sexist comments, the book offers very little new information. For the most part, Bradshaw is pulling from other authors such as Alice Miller, who has obviously written about these subjects in a much more logical and efficient manner. Bradshaw is redundant, often commits circular reasoning, and does not appeal to the gifted individual he speaks about so often.
Powerfully Direct and Compassionately Change-inducing.......2007-08-11
I am reluctant to write this review because it is so hard to simply put into words the effect this book had on me. But in the spirit of compassion for the many people who suffer internally as I can suffer, I want to extend myself to try to say some words that might help another and draw them to this book. Bradshaw, with direct, compassionate clarity and courageous honesty, portrays the deeply painful feelings and behaviors that are the outcome of shame. He describes types of behaviors of significant people in our childhoods who tangibly and obviously, or intangibly and inadvertently, caused us to feel shame. And he depicts its impact on our adult lives and how it continues, how we perpetuate it on those around us. At a critical point in my own life, Bradshaw's book provided a large step forward for my own comprehension of how I came to feel the way I feel, and do the things I do. It is relieving and at the same time uncomfortable to acknowledge my own adaption to being alive. For any meaning to be derived from these insights requires willingness to change. Bradshaw suggests tools and ways of being that offer a path, and sites authors whose work can provide additional steps.
Bradshaw's Lasting Insight Into Our Adulthood Emotional Problems.......2007-05-13
John Bradshaw is great. It's no wonder that this book that is almost 20 years old now, and is still a great source of help for those who are dogged by unresolved childhood issues. Bradshaw has faced these issues himself, so his credibility as an author is unchallenged.
Detailed and through.......2007-03-12
This book gave a great overview of the core of a lot of people's issues, especially with addiction and how it feeds into the cycle of addiction.
Tools to Heal.......2007-02-25
I've been in therapy for years trying to get to the root of my problems, and this book nailed it. Now, not only do I understand myself, but I have the tools to actually HEAL!
It has allowed me to have compassion for my family as well as myself.
I bought this book because of the title and the reviews, but had no idea that it would prove to be so helpful. If you want to learn how to get better, I would recommend this book. My husband has even commented on how I've had fewer "episodes" since starting the work, and am hopeful that it will help me to work through my depression.

Customer Reviews:
One of the stupidest book I've read in a long time!!.......2007-09-01
I have never read a Zane book before and after reading this book, I can say I NEVER will again, the book starts off alright and you expect some substance, but it quickly begins to go down hill.
The sponsor ads were pointless, not funny and a waste of paper, then she throws the silliness from the ads into the story which makes the story just annoying and unrealistic.
The Harmony mystery was such a big secret and when they "revealed" what was wrong that was such a disappointment. The dean escapade was over the top and again....not realistic. The mandingo thing was disgusting and extremely stupid. I was very disappointed with this story and discourage anyone who doesn't have money to blow to stay away from this book.
Crackin up!.......2007-08-31
This book had me crackin up! I was really good and shows some true bondage among sisters and friends..
Funny, Funny, Funny.......2007-06-13
This book was one of the funniest that I have read in a really long time. I highly recommend this book for all to read it is sure not to disapoint!!!
Great blast from the past.......2007-06-04
I rate this 3.5 stars!
I know this is an old one, but I still enjoyed it a lot. It made me laugh out loud and shed a few tears. Very well written (of course it's by Zane). Great Read.
Laugh-Out-Loud Funny.......2007-05-10

Practical Guide to Resolving Shame.......2000-03-28
Letting Go of Shame is an excellent self help guide. Each chapter ends with practical excercises. The material is presented in an orderly fasion, working through the issues one by one. The positive role that shame plays is covered, but the focal issue is toxic shame. It is easy for the reader to identify with symptomatic consequences of shame as each source of shame is presented. It is complementary to Bradshaw's classic book on the subject and in many ways is a simpler presentation for the novice. Complex and technical language is avoided. This is a practical self help guide for anyone dealing with the self inflicting pain caused by shame.

Human Communications Disorders.......2007-10-02
This is a well written text that is easy to take notes from. It is very thorough, but it is definitely written with the professional in mind, with many sitings and technical terms.
some good points, some not that great.......2006-09-28
This text book is very comprehensive and updated (particularly regarding the chapters on genetics and multiculturalism). However, as an introductory text, it contains too much information in too many chapters, often on an intermediate level.
Book Description
"It is my feeling that debilitating shame and guilt are at the root of all dysfunctions in families," says Jane Middelton-Moz. A few common characteristics of adults shamed in childhood: You may suffer extreme shyness, embarrassment and feelings of being inferior to others. You don't believe you make mistakes, you believe you are a mistake. You feel controlled from the outside and from within. You feel that normal spontaneous expression is blocked. You may suffer from debilitating guilt; you apologize constantly. You have little sense of emotional boundaries; you feel constantly violated by others; you frequently build false boundaries. If you see yourself in any of these characteristics, you can learn how shame keeps you from being the person you were born to be and how to change that. Shame And Guilt describes how debilitating shame is created and fostered in childhood and how it manifests itself in adulthood and in intimate relationships. Through the use of myths and fairytales to portray different shaming environments, Dr. Middelton-Moz allows you to reach the shamed child within you and to add clarity to what could be difficult concepts. Read Shame and Guilt - you're worth it.
Customer Reviews:
Great.......2007-06-17
This small book is about much more than the difference between shame and guilt. It is about degrees of shame (to the point of debilitating shame), ways that children are shamed, the consequences, characteristics of adults shamed as children and a lot more. One specific topic that I found extremely interesting was the explanation of grandiosity as a response to debilitating shame, which makes this book required reading for people with this symptom (such as alcoholics and families; bipolars may also benefit). Great condensed book.
Excellent book.......2006-11-01
I read this book cover to cover and I plan reading it again. The author does and excellent job of explaining how shame and guilt are transmitted across generations and how shame effects people. I especially like the fable she use in chapter one to illustrate the giant chameleon and perfect personalities and how they interact in a family. The illustration of Giant and Chameleon on oposite ends of the spectrum and the human being in the healthy middle was very insightful. I also liked the example she gave of how a shaming family handled a dispute between there sons and how a nonshaming healthy family does it.
This book has taught me a lot and given a lot of insight into my condition and my family. It has also helped me and my wife to be better parents to our children. I would recomend it to anyone who is dealing with these issues.
Couldn't Put It Down: Full of Insight.......2005-03-18
Never really thought about the difference between shame and guilt until I read this book. Guilt being when we blame our behavior in a given circumstance and shame being when we judge our very being. It has made me think twice about how I parent my own children and discipline their behavior. Eye-opening !
I found this book very helpful.......2002-05-29
I remember having this book recommended to me years ago at the now closed "Journey's Bookstore" in Beaverton, Oregon. The woman who recommended it had actually heard the tape edition of this book first and was placing an order for the book version. She told me that it made her "cry for the child within her." I thought that any book that had such a powerful affect as this, must be a book I should read.
I ordered the tape and book edition. I listened to the tape version first (which was of the author talking to an audience about the content of this book), and then I read the book. The two together were quite powerful. The most interesting thing about this book was that it differentiates between "guilt" and "shame." The author says that often we use the two interchangeably. But the author says that they are actually two different things. The author says that guilt is "the feeling that what you have DONE is wrong," and that shame is "the feeling that what you ARE is wrong."
An absolutely illuminating book for shamed adults........1998-07-22
An amazing book that touches at the very core of the feeling of shame. If you feel there is something fundamentally wrong with you, or feel you're hiding awful secrets inside you - read this book! Shame lies at the very heart of so many problems; this book is a great start towards healing that shame.

With Foreword, introductory quote, and chapter-end quotes by noted spiritual teacher A.H. Almaas, the reader is alerted to the fact that the author is a student of the Diamond Approach, yet the work stands perfectly well alone without previous introduction to the Ridhwan School. Focusing on the development and structure of the superego, Brown explains how its supposed moral guidance is more than suspect, exposing it as the harsh, purely mental, often untruthful critic it is. Assisting the reader through steps designed to encourage recognition of the endless tirade of blame, criticism, and comparison heaped upon the self by the superego, he provides 30 simple practices to increase self-awareness, decrease incessant judgment, and release this overrated mental projection's stranglehold on heart and soul. --Randall Cohan
Book Description
Whether we call it the inner critic, superego, or just plain nag, most of us have a "judge within" who's constantly on our case. A comprehensive guide to understanding how the inner critic works, this book offers practical, positive suggestions for breaking free of it. Using straightforward language and examples from everyday life, Byron Brown shows: Where the inner judge came from How it operates Why it trips us up Why we believe we need it How to develop awareness of it How to disengage from it The "soul qualities" we can develop to weaken its influence Each chapter begins with an episode of the "Frank and Sue story," dramatically illustrating how the inner critic works; each chapter ends with a simple exercise designed to help the reader move along the path of self-discovery.

How do I know?.......2007-06-12
Some voice inside of me seems to already know how each event of my life should go, critiquing relentlessly as though it has been here before. This book is a powerful step toward disarming the authority of that voice.
An amazing tool, one step at a time, to self acceptance.......2007-03-11
This book is a well written, well supported understanding of a pattern in so many of us, one that can sabotage our free and delightful living in this world. I travel with it around the world :-) a great reminder at times. Byron adds not only a fresh point of view on the Judge, but also with that guides us back to revive a long forgotten/frozen Soul in hiding.. Many exercises to make it more tangible, and even "personal" stories that will echo in each whilst one reading. Take it one step at a time, this is for real.
A great reference book.......2007-01-10
I am an MFT Intern and Guided Imagery Practitioner. This book has proved to be a practical reference for working the inner critic. I've used it ever since I first read it 6 years ago. Do you have clients who have difficulty working on their "self-talk?" This is a great book with excellent exercises to jump-start a huge growth period around awareness, self-affinity and self-compassion. --LMD
indespensible.......2006-05-04
Even after the first three weeks of elation that I experienced after reading the book and implementing the many skills I learned, and the subsequent return to the reality of my "inner judge" causing havoc in my life, I still find this to be the most powerful self-help book I haver ever read. I reference it constantly, to find language to support my soul and release myself from negative feelings and related behavior caused by internal criticism. I have recommended this book to many friends who all agree. This book, if you are willing to do the work, will change your life.
Constantly useful!.......2004-02-05
25 years ago I began a journey. It began with an extremely useful book entitled "A New Guide to Rational Living" by Ellis and Harper. During the intervening years, I've read dozens of books, all of them varying between mildly interesting and useless. This outstanding example of a true and simple understanding of the perception of the world is a real find. I expect to delve into more books along this method of work, with this as a truly profound primer.

Warmed and comforted by the bond that grows between her and her sisters, her heart is lured by the charm of the Irish countryside and tempted by the attraction of horseman Murphy Muldoon. Murphy takes one look at Shannon and knows that she is the woman he's waited for all his life. But Shannon is a practical woman. My favorite in the Triology.......2007-09-14
I guess this is my favorite because I was already familar with the characters. I love how the sisters (Maggie & Brianna) are a huge part of the story in this book although we learned so much about them in the other two books.
The romance between Shannon and Murphy is the kind that Irish legends are made of. Fiery and Mystical.
Nora Roberts.......2007-09-11
has many trilogies and I was happy to get this and recommend these books to anyone who is a fan of hers.
Born in Shame: Trilogy #3.......2007-04-11
Having read the 1st 2 books of Nora Roberts' "Born In ... Trilogy" I was frustrated at being unable to locate the 3rd in the series in a couple local bookstores. Luckily, Amazon came thru. Nora Roberts always does a great job of sharing an indepth look into her characters with her readers. In this series, we emerse ourselves in the lives of 3 very talented sisters, their dysfunctional Mother, surprising Father, and the lucky men who become their husbands. I looked forward to the book and was not disappointed!
good read.......2007-01-20
What better way to pass a cold, winter than by curling up with a good book? The "Born In" trilogy by Nora Robertss is an excellent way to do just that. You won't be diapointed.
Fast paced and rushed.......2005-07-18
To read Born in Shame, the first two books in the trilogy should be read first, or at least Born in Ice. It was Brianna who found the letters to her father and instigated the search for the writer. Had Brianna not done this, Born in Shame would not have been written.
Anyway, the reader is immediately thrown into Shannon Bodine's high style life. From the beginning, she's very stubborn and single minded. After losing both parents, finding out her father really was not her father, and that her mother had an affair with a married man, sends Shannon to Ireland to explore her newfound roots. Here she meets Maggie, who she constantly bumps heads with, Maggie's husband Rogan, sweetnatured Brianna and her humorous husband Gray, and Murphy Muldoon, long time friend of the Concannon sisters. I felt that the story was very rushed. Shannon makes hardly any effort to stalmate Murphy's actions towards her. They're sleeping together before you know it. And then suddenly, she comes to her senses in the last chapter and doesn't leave Ireland. Who'd have thought?
Book Description
Some people are born to lead and destined to teach by the example of living life to the fullest, and facing death with uncommon honesty and courage. Peter Barton was that kind of person.
Driven by the ideals that sparked a generation, he became an overachieving Everyman, a risk-taker who showed others what was possible. Then, in the prime of his life hugely successful, happily married, and the father of three children Peter faced the greatest of all challenges. Diagnosed with cancer, he began a journey that was not only frightening and appalling but also full of wonder and discovery.
With unflinching candor and even surprising humor, Not Fade Away finds meaning and solace in Peter's confrontation with mortality. Celebrating life as it dares to stare down death, Peter's story addresses universal hopes and fears, and redefines the quietly heroic tasks of seeking clarity in the midst of pain, of breaking through to personal faith, and of achieving peace after bold and sincere questioning.

Perhaps the best book I've ever read...........2007-07-15
My father passed away in the fall of 2006, from cancer, at age 58. I found this book during the winter, it was out of place and I picked it up. Maybe I was looking for meaning, I don't know. But I have read it cover to cover twice, and pick it up often to browse. It is beautiful, poignent, raw with honesty. On the surface, my father was nothing like Peter Barton, but as I read the book I saw my father in every page. Much of what I witnessed in his final months were hard to articulate, yet Peter Barton and Laurence Shames gave me the words I could not find.
A beautiful book about death and dying, about life and love and lessons. Read this book. It's more joyous than sad, more beauty than darkness.
I randomly selected this book...and I'm glad I did.......2007-05-25
I happened upon an advance uncorrected proof of this book quite by accident. I read a few sentences and thought, "Why not give it a read?" Well, I have to say that the book - both the writing and the content - are absolutely wonderful. Laurence Shames gets all the emotion and humility and pride down flawlessly in the pages of this book. You can't help but wish you had known Peter Barton after reading this.
Indeed, a LIFE Well-Lived.......2007-03-03
Mr. Shames wrote a poignant and very real account of the disease that took his life at a very early age. I read this a couple years ago, and just re-read after hearing the story of a "younger" person stricken with cancer. This book will inspire, but will also force the reader to consider; "What would I do? Would I have that much grace and zest and enthusiasm?" The dirt-nap gets us all, this book demonstrates how one man dealt with his impending demise---and teaches valuable life-lessons that we could all use. Highly recommended.
Inspirational Read.......2006-06-04
For Peter Barton, a maverick businessman whose career has been characterized by creativity and billion-dollar partnerships, the psychology of cancer was difficult to digest. Unlike most business agreements he has brokered in the media industry, the deal between a terminal patient and his cancer appeared to be a zero-sum game, and the forty-something year old media mogul struggled to bridge the disconnect.
Hardly a person to let death dictate the terms of his legacy, Barton preserved his insights on the matter before he left the living. As such, Not Fade Away -- Barton's chronicle of the last days of his life -- is an attempt at coming to terms with one's finality. The chapters switch back and forth from Barton's first-person narrative and the observations of Barton by a professional writer assigned to shadow the terminal patient during the last stages of his life.
Despite the subject matter, Not Fade Away is an uplifting read because even as death closes in around Barton, we see that life reveals itself in all its sublime beauty. Such a paradox, namely that death is infused with life, leads Barton to embrace both the fact of his imminent death and the ever-present life that surrounds him. Barton reformulates his understanding of the linear aspect of the past, present, and the future, and realizes their convergence and singularity. Just as death is a part of living, we are not fixed to a single point in time; the past, present, and the future are manifest in the now.
Although such notions are not terribly original, Barton's honesty and courage in sharing his innermost fears and doubts during the last days of his life provide a refreshing look at life, death, and perhaps what it means to "not fade away" in a language that resonates with timeless relevance.
What a brilliant life..........2005-12-04
This is easily one of the most inspirational books I have read in a long time. Peter Barton was an extraordinary buisnessman, father, husband and friend...a man who knew how to make each day count and to challenge a terminal illness in a way that must have made his family so very proud of him. I highly recommmend this book to anyone and everyone!!!!
