If you own only one anthology of classic science fiction, it should be The Science Fiction Hall of Fame: Volume One, 1929-1964. Selected by a vote of the membership of the Science Fiction Writers of America (SFWA), these 26 reprints represent the best, most important, and most influential stories and authors in the field. The contributors are a Who's Who of classic SF, with every Golden Age giant included: Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, John W. Campbell, Robert A. Heinlein, Fritz Leiber, Cordwainer Smith, Theodore Sturgeon, and Roger Zelazny. Other contributors are less well known outside the core SF readership. Three of the contributors are famous for one story--but what stories!--Tom Godwin's pivotal hard-SF tale, "The Cold Equations"; Jerome Bixby's "It's a Good Life" (made only more infamous by the chilling Twilight Zone adaptation); and Daniel Keyes's "Flowers for Algernon" (brought to mainstream fame by the movie adaptation, Charly).

The collection has some minor but frustrating flaws. There are no contributor biographies, which is bad enough when the author is a giant; but it's especially sad for contributors who have become unjustly obscure. Each story's original publication date is in small print at the bottom of the first page. And neither this fine print nor the copyright page identifies the magazines in which the stories first appeared.

Prefaced by editor Robert Silverberg's introduction, which describes SFWA and details the selection process, The Science Fiction Hall of Fame: Volume One, 1929-1964 is a wonderful book for the budding SF fan. Experienced SF readers should compare the table of contents to their library before making a purchase decision. Fans who contemplate giving this book to non-SF readers should bear in mind that, while several of the collected stories can measure up to classic mainstream literary stories, the less literarily-acceptable stories are weighted toward the front of the collection; adult mainstream-literature fans may not get very far into The Science Fiction Hall of Fame: Volume One, 1929-1964. --Cynthia Ward

I've purchased this book in paperback and hardcover many times over because I keep giving copies away. This is an indespensible introduction to the art of writing short fiction, sci-fi style. Character studies, logic puzzles, future societies, deaths of civilizations, it's all in here. Emphatically recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Gold.......2007-05-08

My Mom had a dog eared paperback copy of this book from her college days. I remember reading and rereading it as a young boy. It, more than any other book, ignited my passion for science fiction. Every story is a winner and each serves as a jumping off point to explore the author's further work. Of all the SF anthologies, this is the best and is an essential part of any SF fan's library.

Most of the stories in hear are fantastic. The intro also includes a listing of the 20 best voted scifi short stories, which I found myself refering to to see if I could relate to the 'experts' opinions. There are a few stinkers in the bunch, which I'm sure is inevitable, but probably not as many as you'd find as in other collections.

4 out of 5 stars A fine collection of stories.......2007-03-22

This is another great introduction to science fiction for the "non sci-fi fan." This compilation (as noted in the title) features novellas rather than short stories, so the "commitment" to dive into these stories is a bit more of a factor than something Volume One (of the same series title). Be that as it may, the stories you will find here are highly intriguing and quickly draw you into the drama of their world, which is really your world just a little down the road. "Who Goes There" is on of the more popular titles of this collection, but far from the ONLY story here that will capture your interest. Each of these are stories you can read several times over, and still get goosebumps. This is a great collection bound up in one volume, carefully assembled by an expert editor, who knows to let the stories tell themselves without any excess interference.

3 out of 5 stars A decent anthology.......2007-01-05

Not particularly noteworthy, but nonetheless a good addition to one's scifi library, especially one lacking any other series of anthologies.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for SF fans........2006-06-11

This anthology includes my personal favorites: The tale of a dumbed down society in "The Marching Morons" by C.M. Kornbluth, and "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell, Jr. "Who Goes There" is beyond excellent ~ I still get nightmares ~ and was the basis for both films titled "The Thing." Isaac Asimov opines in his biography "I, Asimov" that "Who Goes There?" is the finest science fiction story ever written. I tend to agree.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Stories.......2005-10-05

I read this book many years ago and to this day several of the short stories stick in my mind. So when looking for a good book for my wife to read, I thought this was the perfect choice. Unfortunately, I didn't have a copy. So I was overjoyed to see this book being reprinted and eagerly ordered a copy.

Look for "Who Goes There" which is the short story the movie "Thing" was based upon.

5 out of 5 stars Landmarks of Science Fiction.......2005-01-21

You'd never guess from looking at the bookstore shelves today, but collections of short works like these used to be the mainstay of science fiction. Tor Books deserves kudos for bringing this collection of classic novellas from sf's Golden Age back into print, and in hardcover, too, with Volume 2B presumably still to come.

The novella, longer than a short story, shorter than a full novel, is the ideal length for science fiction, providing enough room for an author to present an idea and work through all its implications, without the padding that often seems obligatory for marketing purposes today.

This book includes key works by some of the field's biggest names from the 1940s and 50s. Most will probably be new to anyone who started reading science fiction after the 1980s, including Campbell's "Who Goes There", filmed twice as "The Thing" but much creepier in print, and Lester del Rey's "Nerves", which pre-dated Three Mile Island and Chernobyl by decades.

While the science may have dated, these are still terrific stories.

Product Description

For 39 seasons at four schools, Dr. Edward N. Anderson spent autumn afternoons roaming the sidelines of college and university gridirons across America. Throughout his career, dignity, composure and a penetrating focus were hallmarks of his sideline decorum. This biography catalogues the life of that "good doctor" who became dean of America's college football coaches and was enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame for lasting influence. Beginning with his young life as a star player, the book relates how Anderson mastered the game as an All-American end under Notre Dame's legendary Knute Rockne. Then, armed with a firm command of the so-called Notre Dame system of football, Anderson entered the collegiate coaching ranks in 1922 and served as a head coach for all but four of the next 43 years. Simultaneously he devoted himself to the practice of medicine and guided his teams to hundreds of victories. Dr. Anderson is a football icon not only for the indelible impression he made on hundreds of young men who had played for him but also for his role as one of the last of an era of gentlemen coaches who had cut their teeth on football during the Rockne era. On the eve of his retirement from college football in 1964, Dr. Anderson was the game's elder statesman, revered by players, fellow coaches, fans and members of the press. His football odyssey, during which he crossed paths with the most influential and colorful personalities of the game, is chronicled in depth.

5 out of 5 stars Give Another Hoya!.......2007-04-29

By John Gearan, an excerpt from Holy Cross Magazine, Spring 2007, Vol 41, Number 2

Buster Carroll, a denizen of an Irish enclave in Queens, loved his heritage, his family, his country passionately.

Buster was a die-hard Notre Dame fan, a loyal member of its famed football fraternity known as the "subway alumni." He knew everything about the Fighting Irish and the oft-exaggerated exploits of legends such as Knute Rockne, The Gipper and The Four Horsemen.

In the early '60s, his son Kevin, a member of Holy Cross' last all-male class of 1972, remembers he and his dad watching the Crusaders playing on TV -- when the camera panned to a sideline shot of the coach.

"That's Eddie Anderson,'' Buster told his son. "The guy is a college head coach and a practicing doctor.

"Imagine that," his father wondered aloud. "How can anyone do that?"

Buster knew about the good doctor because Anderson had been a Notre Dame captain and All-American end under Rockne.

Kevin, a fine football safety and baseball outfielder at Holy Cross High in Flushing, N.Y., entered the College of the Holy Cross in 1968. As a walk-on, he played freshman football but was cut trying to make the varsity as a junior.

But his interest in Anderson was piqued again. "I learned a lot more about Doc while being taped up by our trainer, Jackie Scott," says Carroll.

With the passing of each autumn, Carroll's curiosity about Anderson intensified.

How, he wondered, did Anderson do it all -- coach Holy Cross and Iowa in the Big Ten and practice medicine and help raise four kids? Buster Carroll died in 1983, bequeathing his son this intriguing question that needed to be explored by someone who loved history and sports.

"It was a perfect task for me," comments Kevin.

In 1999, Carroll undertook the quest to tell Anderson's story. Spending four years researching archives, he sifted through newspaper clippings and interviewed players and colleagues from Anderson's 39 seasons at four colleges. Carroll also talked at length with Anderson's four children: Nick, a retired businessman living in Florida; Jerry, an oral surgeon residing in Massachusetts; Jim, a 1962 Holy Cross graduate and retired businessman living in Connecticut; and Judy Anderson Moore, a bank attorney and resident of Pittsburgh.

Doc Anderson's rich life is worthy of such an examination. And, without question, Doc Anderson resides near the peak of the Mount Olympus reserved for scholar-athletes.

Mull this over: Edward N. Anderson, while attending Rush Medical College in Chicago, also served as head football and basketball coach at DePaul University -- and was captain of the Chicago Cardinals, the 1925 National Football League champions.

"He had a clause in his pro-football contract that stated he didn't have to practice," says Carroll. "There were days when he would attend medical school, coach, study and, late at night, take a run for miles along the shores of Lake Michigan, reviewing in his head the details from his Cardinals' playbook and medical texts."

Carroll scrutinizes Anderson's four seasons as a first-string, two-way end at Notre Dame. Amusing vignettes provide a rare insight into the hurly-burly birth of big-time football as Carroll pinpricks much of its mythology. A 5-foot-10-inch, 165-pound scrapper from Mason City High in Iowa, Anderson blocked for the immortal George Gipp, tackled with bone-shivering authority and set a school record with three TD receptions against Northwestern -- the last thrown by The Gipper himself. In Anderson's last three seasons, Notre Dame lost only once, to his home state of Iowa. As a senior, Captain Anderson was a consensus first-team All-American.

Carroll does not shy away from controversy. He probes a scandal that tarnished the Golden Dome when Anderson and seven Notre Dame teammates got caught playing in a semipro game just a few days after the 1921 football season ended. He details how Anderson was banned from playing senior-year basketball and baseball when the story broke nationally.

Anderson's accomplishments are astounding. In his first year at Iowa, 1939, he was voted National Coach of the Year; his star, Nile Kinnick, won the Heisman Trophy. As Maj. Anderson in World War II, Doc labored to heal soldiers in England and in field hospitals in France and Germany. After the war, he treated veterans and disabled children. Anderson won 201 games from 1922 to 1964, including 129 at Holy Cross, where he retired as the "Dean of College Football Coaches."

The book is replete with anecdotes that shed light upon Anderson's character. Carroll paints a portrait of a taciturn taskmaster of rock-ribbed toughness, a nattily attired gentleman pacing the sidelines in a tailored suit and crisp-brimmed fedora.

Cast in the Rockne mold, he would drive the team hard in practice. Yet Anderson respected his players. Behind the scenes, he would go to bat for them when they ran into trouble. He emphasized education as the path to success. He never uttered a profanity, never cursed, never denigrated players in public. Only matters such as showing disrespect for the game or loafing or displaying a lack of sportsmanship could bring him to a boil.

Anderson could appear unemotional and aloof while coaching but be kind-hearted and sensitive away from the field of combat. He could at once convince his players to ignore pain, yet attend with a tender touch to his ailing patients.

Perhaps Vince Promuto '60 -- a Crusader Hall of Famer, a former Washington Redskins All-Pro guard and a lawyer -- sums it up best in Carroll's book: "Someone or something has to touch an emotion within you -- anger, pride, whatever -- to make you play beyond your own limits. In my career, only two coaches had the ability to reach that emotion. One was Vince Lombardi; the other was Dr. Anderson.''

Lombardi and Anderson, two men of stern principle, well worth reading about in this age when shallow celebrity so often trumps true character and earned respect.

This cookbook is a great addition to any cook's collection. I have found the Soy Marinated Salmon recipe to be a hit- even with those who say they don't like fish. I received this cookbook as a wedding gift, and I think it has been the one thing I have used over and over. I have yet to make a recipe from this cookbook that is "average." If you make nothing else, the Applebarn Fresh Apple Cake is worth the price of this book. I need to buy a second volume because the original is wearing out!

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome cookbook!.......2005-03-13

I would describe this cookbook as fun. The recipes span a vast range, as they are collected from different cookbooks from across America. I've created MANY of the recipes over the last few years and have loved all of them. As one reviewer mentioned, most recipes are not for the calorie concious. But then, it doesn't say it is the Light Recipe Hall of Fame, now does it? Most recipes are what I call home-cooking type recipes, with a several A+ restaurant quality recipes (like the Crab Bisque on pg 69). The best part is that most are very easy to make.

5 out of 5 stars I did our daughter's wedding feast from this book!.......2001-02-13

This is the best collection of delectable recipes EVER! I depend on it for everything now. The first recipe I tried was the cheesecake, and my husband looked at me and said: "to die for." The pecan pie is without equal. I prepared the food for 250 guests after our daughter's wedding, and every recipe came from this book. The chocolate raspberry truffle brownies were the biggest hit! The finger foods were wonderful! The thing that cooks will like the best is that they can be assured that every single recipe will turn out great--that they've all been tested and chosen as winners. No more leafing through and trying to decide IF something will be a praisworthy dish; now you KNOW! Love this book!

    Book Description

There is an authoritative guide for every possible kind of movie except “adult” films. Adult Video News—the extraordinary trade journal that covers the adult industry—has filled this void with a superb collection of reviews of the best porno videos and DVDs. This book is for the aficionado of erotica, couples, viewers, and everyone in between.

The AVN Guide to the 500 Greatest Adult Films of All Timeincludes the magazine’s selection of “101 Greatest Adult Tapes of All Times” and much more. In addition, entertaining sidebars run throughout (e.g., Ten Best Couples Films, the Ten Funniest Titles, Ten Best Gonzo Flicks, Ten Best Gay Videos, Ten Best Euro Style Videos, Funniest Hollywood Takeovers, and more). It is a skillful compilation of professional reviews of the best the adult industry has produced, arranged by the commonly used categories—among them “Couples,” “Pro-Amateur,” “Specialty,” “Gonzo,” “Gay-Bi,” “Wall to Wall,” “Alternative,” and more. The 500 reviews were originally written as guides for retailers—so they are gritty, honest, and absolutely straightforward in their evaluation. They provide production details and other inside information rarely known outside the adult industry, including the advice AVN gave to retailers on stocking and marketing specific films.

5 out of 5 stars A True Bible Of This Time.......2007-01-10

The very first movie I saw in the early 80's was Deep Throat and Alice In Wonderland. When the AVN Guide came out I bought it right away knowing all the movies that were rated were going to be someday the best of it's kind. AVN, what would I do without you, Thank You!

3 out of 5 stars Greatness comes with age.......2006-03-30

I understand that they wanted to focus on films from all eras of adult cinema, but it's hard for me to ever see something labeled as great when it just came out two seconds ago. I guess it was ok for the price, but I would've liked to see a better job done in terms of page quality (glossy would've been nice, especially for the photos). The book could also have been bigger. I expected more from something from AVN.

    5 out of 5 stars great read!.......2000-03-05

i found that this was a wonderful book. i was not around during the sixties, but i have been in love with them for a while. this book is a great trip back to the sixties for those of us who weren't fortunate enough to be there, and i'm sure it is great memories for those who were. i would reccomend this book to anyone in search of information about the sixties/hippies. it is definately a must read!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Photographs, Killer Interviews.......1999-09-29

This book is an excellent portrayal of life in the 60's. It is great nostalgia for those who were there, and a great taster for those who wish they were.

    3 out of 5 stars Pure fluff--but entertaining.......1999-05-03

While this book has many great pictures from the decade and examples of artwork inspired by psychedelic rock, it is a very lightweight effort. Perhaps it was meant to be that way. Concentrating almost solely on London and the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco, the book consists mainly of reminiscences of aging hippies, most of whom were involved in the music and/or art scene of that era, either in San Francisco or London. Pretty much all of these consist of uncritical reminiscences about the hippie movement, whose downfall, if we are to believe these people, apparently came only from its eventual invasion by those looking to get rich off the movement (i.e., the establishment), totally disregarding the fact that those hucksters and exploiters were there from the beginning within the movement. One thing that also bothered me is that the rampant drug use of the period was presented almost completely as a positive thing. Indeed, it was glorified. With the exception of mentioning that Syd Barrett apparently became emotionally unhinged at least in part due to his use of LSD, there is almost no mention of the lives destroyed by the hedonism and drug use of the period, including such famous rock pioneers as Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and Jim Morrison, to name the most prominent. While it was interesting and entertaining to read many of these reminiscences, I wanted to know more. I wanted the authors and editors to dig a bit deeper than the superficial outline of that period's history that we've heard about before. One good effort in that direction was the timeline that was at the bottom of every page, spanning the years from 1965-1969 throughout the course of the book. Basically, I recommend this book, but mainly for the great photo spreads and not as much for the commentaries and reminiscences.

3 out of 5 stars Coffee table picture book psychedelic nostalgia for boomers.......1997-11-01

While I am pleased to see a postive book on hippies and psychedelics, this book is an obvious attempt to cash in on the 30th anniversity of the summer of love, 1967. While giving a general overview of the impact of psychedelic drugs in the sixties, it mainly focuses on the year 1967 and the cities of London and San Francisco. It tells the same old story we've read a million times of the wonders of Haight-Ashbury and the events around the summer of 1967. New York and LA are given passing mentions, while the rest of the country and most of the world are totally ignored. There are alot of nice pictures, but there is also too much filler, i.e., 2 page spreads of crowds, people hanging out, etc. The usual cast of characters are here: Leary, Keasey, the SF bands, the Beatles, the Stones, etc. Being an american, the most interesting part to me was the articles about some of the british sceen makers, such as Peter Jenner, Indica Bookstore and the International Times. The real revelation was the poster work of Hapshash and the Coloured Court, a pair of London artists which certainly equaled if not outshown the San Francisco poster artists of the time. Too bad not more of their work was shown and less of crowd scenes. Overall, the book had alot of interesting trivia and pictures, but it generally lacked depth and had too much filler. Published by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the book is an obvious attempt to promote the major bands that came out of a certain scene, rather than an indepth study of the scene itself.

I have dozens of cookbooks. This one, along with the original Recipe Hall of fame cookbook, is my most-used cookbook!! This one does not collect dust!! Impressive desserts that only LOOK like you took all day to make!! And the ingredients are not something you have to go cross-the-city to an highly expensive gourmet store for!! Most recipes are easy to make, easy to clean-up, and always a hit--not a dud yet!!

5 out of 5 stars Recipe Hall of Fame Dessert Cookbook : Winning Recipes from.......2001-11-17

I thought the Recipe Hall of Fame Quick & Easy Cookbook : Winning Recipes from Hometown America was so good that I picked up this cookbook, too. There were so many delicious recipes that I had to try several over a weekend. Then I had to walk three miles a day the next week to burn off the extra calories! But it was worth it. Recipes for desserts adaptable to summer or winter menus, casual or formal entertaining, light or rich meal-enders, this cookbook has it all.

    2 out of 5 stars A very odd cookbook.......2001-03-03

I bought this expecting "hometown" style recipes, but some of them are really odd. One of the advertised recipes is "Black Forest Cake", ordinarily one of my favorites - a chocolate cake with cherries and a whipped cream icing. In fact, the name is a translation from the German "Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte" - black forest cherry cake. But the recipe in this book is for 4 meringue disks layered together with a chocolate pudding-like filling and whipped cream. No cherries or cake in sight, and not like any Black Forest cake I've ever seen.

I also expected a fair number of packaged and instant ingredients in a cookbook like this, and there are. But, again, a lot of the recipes are very strange in this. "Raspberry Sherry Trifle" uses store-bought cake, Raspberry Jell-o (??? - never saw that in a trifle before), and frozen raspberries - but goes on to include making home-made vanilla cornstarch pudding. Huh? With all those commercially-prepared ingredients, why waste your time on homemade pudding? Use instant.

At first I thought that I have too much experience with real European desserts and real recipes - but I'm just getting into desserts, so I'm not much beyond the novice stage. I'm certainly no pro, but I know when I see something bizarre, and lots of these recipes are!

Interesting recipes, but don't expect to find a recipe for your favorite [fill in the blank], because it probably won't be what you expect.

    5 out of 5 stars A nostalgic look back...........2005-09-10

Although I purchased this book as a gift for my sports fanatic son-in-law, the book was so inviting that I took a little time to peruse it before I wrapped it and found myself taking a trip down memory lane. I especially enjoyed the comments about what baseball was like when I was growing up. It took me back to a time when I, too was awed by my first trip to Yankee Stadium. Definitely a good read for any "baby boomer" who remembers the "good old days" when team rosters stayed virtually the same for more than just a season or two!

4 out of 5 stars An okay book but given the subject it should have been great.......2003-05-12

The best advice I can give you for reading "What Baseball Means to Me: A Celebration of Our National Pastime" from cover to cover is based on the same principle by which you should never leave a baseball game earlier. You might see something worth remembering. This is certainly the case with this book, which is edited by Curt Smith because the idea that this is a collection of "essays" is a definite misnomer. What happened was that 150 people, from former and current baseball plays like Phil Rizutto and Pedro Martinez, along with writers, politicians, presidents, and other types of celebrities were asked to provide responses to the statement "what baseball means to me." In the case of coach Mike Ditka and writer Elmore Leonard that means a slight paragraph, while David E. Birney and Dan LeBatard provide poems, and Doris Kearns Goodwin compares and contrasts her early love affair with the Brooklyn Dodgers and her current affection for the Boston Red Sox for several pages. These responses are accompanied by more than 200 photographs from the National Baseball Hall of Fame (whose seal of approval appears on the cover).

Ultimately it is supposed to be the stories told about the love of baseball that matters and not the identity of the person writing the response, but the book works against that goal. I get the sense that "What Baseball Means to Me" was compiled rather than edited. The responses are arranged alphabetically rather than thematically, so George Bush is followed by George W. Bush. This is not a coffee table book that you sit down and read cover to cover; a series of symbolic rain delays are probably helpful in getting through all the responses. I would have liked the book a lot more if there had been a more logical pattern of organization beyond the alphabet. Instead of being engrossed in this volume I was constantly distracted by entries that were not worthy of inclusion. When I got to Bob Costas and found a brief series of sentences separated by ellipses, I knew this book was in trouble. However, at the end of the alphabetical rainbow are Bob Uecker and Ted Williams, so hang in there.

Still, everybody who loves the game should find a couple of choice gems within these pages if they take the time to mine them out from the rest. My choice memory from the past was called forth by a photograph of Mel Stottlemyre sliding home to complete an insider-the-park grand slam home run at Yankee Stadium on July 21, 1965. That was the year I started watching baseball and had decided I was a Yankee fan (I liked New York as a state and the Yankees in the Civil War), and I remember watching that game on television and them showing the play over and over because the announcers could not get over the fact that this had just been done by a pitcher (Mel hit that big gap in deep left center, way beyond the monuments). So there are things here to touch upon your love of the game, but we still cannot help but feel disappointed that this book is not as great as it should have been.

5 out of 5 stars What Baseball Means To Me.......2002-05-31

Curt Smith is right on the money with this wonderful book. It made me cry in parts because the passion that so many of the writers have for the game of baseball is that same passion that is in all of us for something we truly love. The choice of people was very timely. There were people I knew, and others I didn't know, but I enjoyed reading every one of their essays. This book would be a great Father's Day gift. It's one of those books that you see and think is beautifully done, but once you start reading, you can't put it down. A real treasure. I'll keep it on my coffee table for a long time.

    1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing..........2002-05-25

...but most of all a little boring. actually, a lot boring. I get enough of Dan Rather and Dave Barry to care what they think about baseball. If the author posed specific questions, then it might have been interesting. This book does not at all go to the Heart of the game.Very disappointed.

    5 out of 5 stars A beautiful book about a wonderful subject.......2002-05-13

This is one of the most beautiful books I've seen in a long time. The stories are not about being celebrities, but about baseball and how it gets hold of you and never lets go. Theirs are not stories of being famous, but of being Americans with a common love of The Game. If you love baseball or know someone who does, get this book.
