Book Description
Two years in MBA school won't teach you how to double the market's return. Two hours with The Little Book That Beats the Market will.
In The Little Book, Joel Greenblatt, Founder and Managing Partner at Gotham Capital (with average annualized returns of 40 0.000000or over 20 years), does more than simply set out the basic principles for successful stock market investing. He provides a "magic formula" that is easy to use and makes buying good companies at bargain prices automatic. Though the formula has been extensively tested and is a breakthrough in the academic and professional world, Greenblatt explains it using 6th grade math, plain language and humor. You'll learn how to use this low risk method to beat the market and professional managers by a wide margin. You'll also learn how to view the stock market, why success eludes almost all individual and professional investors, and why the formula will continue to work even after everyone "knows" it.

Good Investment Advice.......2007-08-23
He wrote this so anyone can beat the market average--especially beat most of the mutual fund adverages with little risk and little tracking. It is O.K. to buy Blue chip stocks at a lesser cost and hold them as the price goes up. This is not for active traders, but general investors who think they can invest at least as well as many mutual fund managers. You can!
Value stock trader.......2007-08-23
I enjoyed reading this book and started tracking 24 recommended stocks in February. The formula was working quite well until August when it lost all gains and some of the principal but I have confidence that this basket of stocks will rebound by year's end.
I read it, used it, and made money with it.......2007-07-17
I don't know much about investing but was intrigued by this concept. So far in 4 months I am up 22%, beating every average out there. Not bad. I'm a believer.
Joe continually says that the simple concepts of this book will go over the sophisticated investors heads'. After reading the reviews on here, it appears as he is correct!
So, if you are open to new ideas and don't think you know everything, I'd say give it a shot.
Not quite a waste of money..........2007-07-15
I don't really appreciate Greenblatt's excessively condescending tone in this book. He approaches his audience not as 12 year olds, but as 8 year olds with learning disabilities and a corny sense of humor. His constant reference to his MAGIC FORMULA is incredibly annoying and misleading. It's not particularly magical, and there's nary a formula. And basing his entire case on 17 years worth of data analysis is pretty weak, too. There's a lot of hand-waving.
But for all the belly-aching over the lack of rigorous specifics from other reviewers, rest assured Greenblatt's numerical analysis is actually right. After looking at Compustat and trying to replicate his results, I roughly got his numbers.
Begrudgingly, I have to admit that for all the book's flaws with its childish approach and the expectation that we should take his numbers as given and its short-shrifted logic, Greenblatt's value-based approach to investing still shines through. He does a good job of emphasizing some hallmarks of value investing -- patience, discipline, and focusing on cheap assets. And his inappropriately named "magic formula" does highlight stocks that many investors would view as "value." So, despite his complete lack of specifics on virtually every topic in the book, what he does offer is still valid. And his website is free and does exactly what he says it will do.
I truly despise and resent the last chapter -- "what will you do with all of the millions you haven't made yet?" It's inappropriate to speculate on unmade money that isn't his. But then to go a step further and have a professor of all people suggest we should be giving money to education just stinks of self-interest. And then to go even further and condemn public education because of teacher unions and its anti-capitalist and bureaucratic approach as hopeless is a horrendous way to end a book, even if he is completely right.
True, there's a lot of fluff in this book. But it has its high points and value investors of all stripes and sizes can still read it and get something out of it. I'm glad I bought it.
The little book that Beats the Market........2007-07-13
It was really a quick read. Very easy to follow. Regardless if you believe the authors opinion or not, it's still worth the read.

What a ride!.......2007-09-24
I have only read "Storm Front" before this. I liked it better. There are so many villians in this book and Harry is threatened in so many ways and injured in so many ways, it almost becomes laughable. The ending is good and exciting, even though I knew pretty much what was coming about chapter 3. The book is starting to have the "Da Vinci Code" syndrome: a cliffhanger at the end of every chapter. He is not as bad as Brown yet, but he is definitely headed in that direction. The friendship of Harry and Butters is pretty cool. The magic becomes convenient for plot devices. The humor is still there in spots.
The series is good. I was just slightly disappointed in this one.
Days of the Dead.......2007-09-14
Dead Beat (2005) is the seventh urban fantasy novel in the Dresden Files series, following Blood Rites. In the previous volume, Harry burned his hand rescuing children from the Black Court vampires. He also discovered that paintball guns work well against the Black Court when loaded with holy water.
Lara Raith discovered the results of the curse on her father and Thomas learned that Justine is not dead. Jake decided to go into Feng Shui consulting while he took care of Emma's kids. Harry named the puppy "Mouse" and wondered why Thomas had bought large breed Puppy Chow.
In this novel, Thomas is living with Harry in the basement apartment. Thomas is frustrated because he cannot find a permanent job and Harry is frustrated because he cannot find a permanent girlfriend. Mister and Mouse are frustrated because they don't get fed on time and they are both oversized enough to really need the food.
It doesn't help that Thomas has women coming into the apartment when he should be running errands for his brother. Maybe Thomas and his lovers have a great time, but they do trash the place. Even the books are pulled out and scattered on the floor. And Thomas doesn't clean up behind himself.
After Thomas bares his soul and leaves in a huff, Harry takes Mouse out for a walk and Murphy pulls up just as he returns. Karrin is going on a vacation -- the first one in forever -- to Hawaii with Kincaid and wants Harry to water her plants. Harry tries to talk her out of doing anything with Kincaid, but doesn't try that hard since Karrin is not his girlfriend. Later, he wonders if Murphy had wanted him to try a little harder.
After pocketing the keys to her house, Harry goes inside the apartment and heats up some soup. Sitting down to eat, Harry checks his mail and finds one envelope with only his name and address on it. He checks it out for magical spells and, finding nothing harmful, opens it and slides out two photos and a note.
The photos show Murphy blasting some vampire minions with a shotgun. Harry knows that the public will only see human shaped bodies in the photos. The note threatens to send copies to Murphy's bosses if Harry doesn't appear at a specified time and place. The note offers a truce for the parley and is signed "Mavra". Dresden has little choice in the matter.
At the meeting, Mavra demands that Harry find a book -- The Word of Kemmler -- or the photos get mailed. Mavra has also taken precautions to ensure that the photos will be mailed if Harry destroys her. Harry still doesn't see any way out of this mess.
In this story, Harry gradually finds out more about Kemmler and his books -- at least two earlier works had been self-published -- and he soon discovers that Kemmler had been the most dangerous necromancer suppressed by the White Council. They had finally terminated Kemmler himself and several apprentices, but they hadn't gotten them all. Now the last work of Kemmler has suddenly reappeared and Harry soon runs into three separate necromancers looking for the book.
The first necromancer encountered is Grevane, who raids the Forensic Institute -- commonly called the morgue -- looking for something. The security guard is the first through the door into the examining room, his throat cut from ear to ear. Then Grevane and two other zombies enter and face Butters, the medical examiner. Harry intervenes to save Butters and they barely escape from the dead men. Harry takes Butters home to his warded apartment.
Later, Harry meets Shiela -- a clerk at Bock Ordered Books -- and buys a copy of a rare book that he needs for his research. When he steps out of the bookstore, two hooded figures are waiting for him. They both know who he is, but the taller one introduces himself as Cowl and calls the shorter one Kumori. Dresden drops a Toyota on Cowl, but only the local pack of werewolves saves him from the more powerful wizard.
When he later returns to the bookstore, the front windows have been replaced with plywood. Bock asks him to never return, but Shiela asks him for a date. Then the third necromancer -- Corpsetaker -- comes into the store asking about the buyer of the rare book and Harry steps out to confront her. She almost snares him with her mind magic, but he gets away with a little help from John Marcone.
This story has Harry facing three necromancers who are each much stronger than him. Moreover, he doesn't know what they want and how they expect to get it. Obviously, The Word of Kemmler is important, but so is the other book. He desperately needs more information.
Harry spends some time explaining the facts of the preternatural world to Butters. At first, Butters is skeptical, but too much is happening around him to deny the facts. Harry also divulges various White Council secrets and even shows Butters how to power a magical circle.
Harry also has several frank discussions with the shadow of Lasciel dwelling within his mind. Naturally, Dresden knows that the fallen angel is trying to seduce him to the dark side, but she is so convincing. He is definitely NOT going to dig up the blackened denarius in the cellar, but maybe they can work out a compromise to help protect his friends and neighbors.
Highly recommended for Butcher fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of magical powers, dinosaur skeletons, and other exotica.
-Arthur W. Jordin
Wild Ride.......2007-08-06
This is a great story. I especially like the character Butters in this book, as he is really just an average guy, and he finds out some stuff about himself. All the Dresden File books are exciting, and the ending to this one is literally a really wild ride. Anyone who likes action with a sense of humor will really enjoy these stories.
Details, details.......2007-08-04
I am giving this five stars, because as books go, it deserves it, but it is not the best Harry Dresden novel. Others reviewers have addressed major aspects of this book. It is definitely an action packed book with interesting characters and an exciting plot. I wanted to address some fine points that often go unappreciated in books.
Firstly, Jim Butcher is very good with unifying a plot. A "dream" (or possibly magical encounter) occurs early in the book. It seems the only point of it is an excuse for a very elaborate pun. (Which you would not get if you were not familiar with "Jaberwocky.") However, this sets up two later scenes. One is a reference to the thing that is punned upon and the other is scene where Harry is comforted about the possible repercussions of a death curse. This is just a minor example of the kind of unity that Jim Butcher is capable of. Most published authors get the major things right. Jim Butcher is also good with the details.
Secondly, this novel creates some beautiful visual images. Like many people, I started reading the Harry Dresden novels after seeing the TV series. The TV series is good, but it is really a different world. But I defy anyone to read the action packed battle at the end without "seeing" incredible visual images. The ScFi channel doesn't have the budget to do what the novel does.
An excellent book.......2007-08-03
Wow this is one of the best of a great series by Jim Butcher. In this book not only does Harry's character grow and becomes more interesting the character Waldo Butters grows tremendously as well. I couldn't put the book down once I started reading.

Ok.......2007-09-17
This book is ok, I didn't mind the read, but it didn't necessarily expose any knowledge you cannot already get out there on the net for trading pennies. But, I would recommend the book for anyone new to the game and for anyone wanting reinforcement in the standard concepts of trading on the OTCBB and Pinks.
good for beginners, waste of time for experienced.......2007-08-18
Not a book for advanced investor, but has some helpful hints to help protect newer investors interested in gambling in pink sheets.
Short on Strategy.......2007-08-10
It was a neat book. There wasn't a whole lot of strategy. It was more of a warning that you will be speculating if you dabble in these very small capitalization stocks. This book would be better suited in a waiting room or library. Don't waste your money on it. I got through the concepts in an afternoon, and I read slowly.
Some interesting ideas.......2007-05-04
I read this book because I wanted to find some info about micro-cap investing to balance out my portfolio, which is inevitably weighted toward domestic large-cap stocks (actually, my best-performing funds in the last three years have been international mutual funds that have done well while the U.S. dollar lost value). Micro-caps scare me, because of issues with liquidity, company transparency, and the fear of "pump and dump" schemes. This book offers an interesting history of penny stock investing, and some advice on how to navigate its rocky shoals. If I can make any money with such strategies, I'll update this review in about a year.
A must read.......2006-11-15
A fantastic book, that shows the novice trader, common sense techniques for intelligent investing in small, undiscovered companies.
Solid investment analysis and advice. Valuable resources on how to spotlight potential companies. Everything you need to know.
Holtzclaw's first book on Penny stocks proved to be valuable information for me when I was a novice trader, and helped me make $$$$.
I have already (after reading this new book), had some amazing investment returns, and couldn't be happier...way to go dan!

The bible on Diabetes.......2007-09-01
My husband has diabetes and up until recently it has been uncontrollable, so we've been reading book after book on the subject. When I purchased "Death to Diabetes", it was like none other in scope. McCulley's book is thorough and goes in depth on the cause, cure and prevention of this horrible disease. In addition, it is written from the perspective of someone who has suffered through, almost died from and then reversed the disease. You can throw out all the other books on diabetes. This is the one every diabetic should read.
Death To Diabetes.......2007-08-31
A great book on how to manage, control and perhaps reverse type 2 diabetes. Mr. McCulley is extremely methodical and scientific in his analyses of the disease. He outlines the reasons for T2 and tells what he did to "cure" his diabetes thereby passing on his methods to the reader through his "Wellness" program. His background in biochemistry and medicine when relating to diabetes is expert. He is very well-informed and passes his tried and true methods of control (Stages 1-4) and ultimate "cure" (Stages 5 & 6) on to those who choose to follow his suggested approach through these 6 stages. I highly recommend this book to those who wish to be in super control and possibly rid themselves of this dread disease.
Save your money.......2007-08-13
Don't bother with this book and save your money for better things. Dr. Berstein's Diabetes Solution is by far the best book on managing diabetes. It is better written, more complete, and easier to understand.
Excellent Book.......2007-07-20
This b0ok is VERY helpful and gives some very excellent and no nonsense steps to take to "reverse" Type II diabetes immediately. It helped me to immediately lower my blood glucose.
Very well wrtitten and informative.......2007-07-16
This book is very informative re:Type 2 Diabetes and how you can change your lifestyle and diet and see reversal. It is very easy to read and explains the progression of this disease and is easy to understand and follow.

Roadmap To Change.......2006-09-02
Highly recommend this innovative work that addresses the core issues of identifying and managing stress in our lives. The very helpful accompanying CD's are a bonus. They reinforce the learnings in a practical way that works with modern lifestyles. I have used them daily and find them most helpful in building the skills Dr Winner discusses in Stess Management Made Simple.
Dr. Winner's book / CDs are not winners!!!.......2006-08-09
The first few chapters of the book are fairly good in the discussion of stress management; however, the remaining chapters are nothing more than a retelling of "highly effective people" books. Dr. Winner's 2 free 6 minute sample exercises on his website are identical to the ones on the CDs, and he repeats (in the exact same words) those exercises using different titles to lengthen the CDs. The free sample exercises on his website are gimmicks to enhance buyers. Don't waste your money!
Practical, timely,Something 4 everyone who has excess stress.......2004-09-21
Read this book - it is sure to have several chapters which will be helpful tools to managing or putting into perspective the S-T-R-E-S-S that so many of us are confronted with.
If you don't like one section, or chapter, skip on - because there are a variety of methods and topics that are sure to be useful.
As a teacher, I recommend this for parents, students and all those who want to find better ways of coping in this busy, challenging life. What is more essential than keeping your health? One has to continue looking for ways to maintain health - reading and re-reading books on 'keeping cool' under pressure seem like top priorities for our time(s).
I've read this book at least three times - keep it near where you read - it will help you.
An antidote to the immense stresses of 21st century life.......2004-03-08
Two accompanying audio CDS offering guided meditation, stretching advice, and relaxation techniques complement Stress Management Made Simple, an excellent antidote to the immense stresses of 21st century life as offered by author, medical doctor, and stress management instructor Jay Winner, M.D. From learning how to manage anger and frustrating, to improving the quality of one's sleep, to simply better enjoying one's day, Stress Management Made Simple is an easy-to-read, "reader friendly", highly recommended addition to Self-Help reading lists , Self-Improvement reference library collections.
A Real Winner!.......2004-01-03
This book is a real winner! The book and 2 CDs are amazing. You will feel the stress leave your body as you read or listen. I have read the book and have incorporated many of its elements into my own pediatrics practice. Buy a copy for yourself and another for someone you love. A great value! Following in People's Footsteps.......2007-06-15
We Beat the Streets by three doctors, Sampson, George, and Rameck, is a nonfiction book. This story is about three friends that go to a medical school and they wanted to be different doctors. I learned that people should hang out with the people who want to bring you higher to a higher grade. I like this book becouse it has a lot of adventure and mystery.Other will like it because it has magnificent stories that will make you want to read more. -by Kevon Pierrot
Read Aloud to students.......2007-03-10
This book is an excellent read aloud book for teachers of young African American males. It encourages and helps them realize that no matter how badly one's life begins, it doesn't have to stay that way. It's a great discussion starter to help young people voice their concerns in a format that normally would not be available to them.

We Beat the Streets
This book "We Beat the Streets" can show people, it doesn't matter were you come from. You can always become something even if you live in the ghetto.
This Book is about three doctors, George Jenkins, Sampson Davis and Rameck Hunt, and all three of them come from a New Jersey city, Newark. All three of them fulfill there dream and go to college. In the book there are incidents from the lives of all three doctors about them living in the bad areas of Newark when they were kids. They did some bad things at first in there lives but then they realized later on in there life that the street life won't pay off in the end. As the reader reads this book they will follow Sampson, Rameck and George as there journey from first grade through medical school. See them achieve there goals. In this book "We Beat the Streets" it shows tragedy of street life and how still living in bad communities you can always achieve your goals.
The content of "We Beat the Street" was edited really good for such young readers, making it a want to read book for this age level. The style of this book was simple but also attractive which will catch reader's eyes. Also the message was to the reader is excellent. It puts a warning to readers and also it's a inspiration, and encourages higher education, especially for those who doubt their ability to achieve there education goals. "We Beat The Streets" was one of the best books I have ever read on a subject like this. I extremely recommend this book to readers.
Beat the Street.......2006-10-16
In this work three African American doctors tell the story of how they used their brains, loyalty, and few good chances to escape their tough urban neighborhood, go to college and medical school, and become doctors. The book is targeted for an adolescent audience, although there is an adult version, called "The Pact" available. At the end of each chapter, the doctors give some advice to young people who want to achieve more than those around them expect.
Quote: "Young people need positive role models and guidance in their lives. There is no underestimating a positive figure in a child's life."
I picked this book up because it is the only one recommended by more than one of my ninth graders. I enjoyed the anecdotes about the childhood and teenage years of the young men, but mostly I appreciated their frank discussion of the challenges their lives presented, the choices they needed to make, and the belief of many in their neighborhood that they would never get out. I think young people would enjoy the work even more than I did, since the authors were careful to target students.
ew........2006-08-20
I, for one, am not a fan of inspirational stories. I honestly thought that this is one of the most stupid books I ever read. I had to read this for summer reading and I really did not enjoy it. At all. Yay, so three boys from the ghetto became doctors. Incredible. Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn. Don't waste your time. It's stupid.

Amazing book for wannabe attacking players.......2007-06-12
Before reading this book, I played chess like a scared chipmunk, obsessing about little details like whether pushing this pawn would weaken my position by a picounit. This book helped me see that the way to win games at the amateur level is to attack, to be aggressive, to go after the enemy king like he is your nemesis, to crank open his position like a sardine can and commit regicide.
The book's title is somewhat misleading in that the book is very narrow in scope (a full book on how to beat dad would have to include discussion of openings, endgames, and more general chess strategy and tactics). Rather, it contains fifty practical checkmating patterns that frequently come up in real games. If the basic mating patterns (e.g., how to mate with a King and Queen versus a lone King) are the alphabet of checkmate, this book is the grammer of checkmate. The patterns consist of beautiful 3-5 move combinations that you will have opportunities to apply in many of your games.
If you are looking for a beginner chess book, get the Idiot's Guide to Chess. That is the best place to start from square one. Then learn some very basic tactics (e.g., Pandolfini's Beginning Chess). Then get and read this book. Over and over. With these patterns ingrained in your mind, you will spot them in the far distance during games, aim for them, and go in for the kill. Sure, sometimes you will crash and burn, but that will only make you more prepared for the next game.
Thanks to Chandler for writing this book. It has made chess fun for me again.
good book.......2007-04-27
This book isnt really about how to beat your dad at chess, because your dad could be bobby fischer or not even know how to play chess (just wanted to clear that up for u guys)
This book has 50 mates and its about pattern recognition, that means pretty much just pounding it into your head so u can remember to use it when you have the chance. its a really good book, i would get it.
Chess Nuts Boasting.......2007-04-18
Great book. I love the premise- and the careful way the Mr. Chandler explains it- which is that pattern recognition is a more powerful tool than in-depth computation analysis. It serves as a nice illustration of Gladwell's "Blink" theory, that less information can be more when the brain is finely tuned in to the right information. Chandler points out that a human chess pro is better than a computer because our brains can quickly filter out the irrelevant info and just recognize the broad pattern, such as a set-up for a standard mate possibility. The computer is inferior, per the author, because while it might come to the same conclusion, it has to do it by generating every single possible move with every single piece on the board, following out hundreds of thousands of possible subsequent sequences to arrive at the checkmate. Of course, I would suggest that the computer is actually superior in this respect because, even though it has to analyze hundreds of thousands of possibilities, it really doesn't mind. It doesn't get bored, fatigued, or seduced by a bold capture. But, still, I appreciate his point.
The author gives examples of fifty standard checkmate motifs, and uses good illustrations to help recognize the pattern when it is there and understand the sequence of events. My only beef with the book, for which I've docked a star, is the sexist title. I can't help but comment on this in this post-Imus era. The author tells us from the start that it is really a book on how to beat anyone in chess so the title is just an eye-catcher. But I don't want to reinforce the many messages that young girls get about what they should or shouldn't be good at. Okay, to be truthful, in all the chess playing families that I can think of off the top of my head, it is in fact the fathers who are the chess nuts, who hand the game down to the next generation. But lets not reinforce the not uncommon notion that men are naturally superior chess players. I've even read the likes of Camille Paglia, in one of her faux-academic pieces, use the fact that chess champions are all men as evidence for a male superiority in spatial and mathematical reasoning. Without going too far into what is a complicated and emotionally loaded argument, I would just direct people to do a little internet search on Judit Polgar if you are not already familiar.
Still, overall, thumbs up. A good book, really for beginning to intermediate chess fans of any age, which will increase your arsenal of offensive tricks and improve your defensive vigilance.
A must for kids with rating up to 600 (approx).......2007-04-08
We purchased this book for my two kids, and saw an immediate improvement. It is written in a very easy to read style, and it goes to through a lot of the tactics needed to improve their game... The only disadvantage was that I had to improve my game too to keep ahead of them!
Well-organized and useful to players of any ability.......2006-12-31
This is a very well-organized and highly readable book on various types of checkmates. Since this is the whole purpose of the game, it is an obvious area of emphasis from both offensive and defensive perspectives. In other words, if you want to be a winner you need to always be looking for checkmate whether you are on the "giving" or "receiving" side! I think the author is correct to be emphasising this early and teaching people to recognize patterns than come up that lead to checkmate. This will both prevent you from being checkmated by surprise and to see checkmate opportunities in real game situations that you might otherwise miss.
The other reviewers are correct in their observations that this book is suitable for players of any age. In fact, I would say it is even a bit misleading to position it as a book for kids. It seems to me that one would need to be at least 12 years old to fully appreciate and benefit from the contents. It might be a difficult read for younger kids, but one they can grow into over time. I wouldn't buy it for someone is 6 years old, but it certainly is a possiblity for a bright 9 year old.
I don't really have anything critical to say about the book. It gets to the point quickly and focuses on principles and patterns that come up again and again in chess. If you are serious about chess, but haven't really studied it, this would be a great place to start. The contents are not overwhelming and the book covers a lot of ground without becoming boring.
Finally, if you are a beginning chess player and you really want to beat your dad, this book will help enormously. The other books by this author are also very good. In addition, I would recommend getting a good chess program. This is one of the best ways to improve your play.

Very narrow target market-- and it's probably not you........2006-05-18
Marty Cortinas, Beat the Odds: The Smart Player's Guide to Online Poker (Peachpit Press, 2006)
This is, perhaps, a worthwhile book for the complete novice to online poker; if you don't know where the sites are, and are still learning your way around a computer, there's likely a lot to be gotten out of this. If you're already registered at a poker website, however, there's very little you're likely to find here that will be new. (I did learn about PokerTracker from the book, though, so I can't call it a total wash.)
If you think a more advanced book would be right for you, it probably would. Flip through this one before putting out your hard-earned cash; you may already know everything to be found in it. **
Useless.......2006-03-14
Except for a very brief list of on-line poker sites (and their structure differences) and a warning about cheaters that you can't do anything about, this book offers nothing that even a brand new player doesn't already know about poker. There is nothing about how to play poker, nothing about how to play poker on-line, nothing about on-line strategy, on-line players, no tips, no hints, nothing about odds or how to beat them - nothing!
I never write reviews but I had to warn others about this book.
I felt very ripped off.
What a Manual Should Be.......2006-02-02
"The Smart Player's Guide..." is, happily, what's rarely made available these days; a smartly written, intelligently illustrated, concise instruction manual. In this case, for the evolving world of online poker. Those interested in anteing up to online gaming will find find the author's mixture of gaming knowledge, descriptive analysis, and personal experience with several popular sites a godsend. Those looking for the great american novel will probably want to wait for the first published effort of one of the other reviewers contributing here.
Not worth the time nor money.......2006-01-12
This is just a superficial book about online poker. It is neither worth the time nor money to buy. I have been playing online poker for a little over one month and I could write a better book than this.
I was disappointed in the book.

Book Description
At the age of nine, Cynthia Ann Parker was captured in an Indian raid and taken to live as a slave with the Comanche. Twenty-four years later, she is the wife of a chief and the mother of a young warrior destined to become the great chief Quanah Parker. But in 1861 Cynthia Ann Parker and her infant daughter are recaptured, and returned against their will to a white settlement. “A skillful examination of how individual identity is determined by cultural and social structures, and of what happens when these are drastically altered.”--Kirkus Reviews

Cynthia Ann Parker has always fascinated me and her life was hard........2007-10-02
This is a wonderful book about the little white girl taken by Indians in central Texas at age 10. She was later married to Indian Chief and bore 3 children. One of her sons was Quanah Parker, famous in his own right.
Don't miss this account of her life. I could not put it down until I had finished reading it.
Historical significance.......2007-09-19
This is an interesting concept on the history of Cynthia Ann Parker, captured as a child and raised by Indians. This work is focused on the history of the episode and Parker's return and foreced residence among a family she barely remembered. Although Parker rarely communicated her history, the author postures the cruelty of her Indian Captors. One must compare how this story contradicts other works such as "Ride the Wind" by Lucia St. Clair Robson. Robson puts forth the opposite opinion and relates how good the Indians were to the children they took and raised.
book review.......2007-05-19
After we read where the broken heart still beats by Carolyn Meyer I could understand why Cynthia Ann wanted to go back with her people. I could also see why Meyer wrote this book.
Cynthia Ann thought she was a Comanche because she was captured by them when she was 9-years-old. Her family captured her 25 years later and took her in to comfort her. She didn't take to her real life that much.
I could see why she wanted to go back to her people. She lived most of her life with the comanches so she doesn't know that much about her old life. She made a family in her other life so she really really wants to go back.
You should read this book if you want an adventure. This book is really interesting and worth it if you want to read it. I recommend this book you people in middle school. Also to people that are older than 13.
Will the broken heart still beat?.......2007-05-19
After we read Where the Broken Heart Still Beats by Carolyn Meyer I could tell why Cynthia Ann wanted to go back with the Comanches. I also see why Meyer wrote this book. It makes you feel like you a really there with her and you feel how she feels. It makes you feel sometimes you wish you go and tell her Uncle just let her go back.
Cynthia Ann thought that that she was part of the Comanche tribe and they are not the ones that captured her. She thought that they were her family and her real family where the ones that captured but they rescued her. She had lived with them so long and thought she was a Comanche. She had a husband and kids there and she wanted to be with them.
I really see why she wanted to go back with the Comanche's. She had her family and wanted to see her son. She also wanted her little daughter, Topsannah, to see how they lived. She talked how they talked and acted like them she needed to be with the Comanche's.
You should read this book if you like books that go back and forth and if you like happy and sad books. I think that if you like biography you would really like this book. In some parts you will feel like you are sitting with Cynthia Ann.
When Forcing Becomes A Problem.......2007-05-19
In the book Where the Broken Heart Beats by Carolyn Mayer, the book brings out a lot of interesting points. In the first part of the book, Lucy begins to talk about her cousin Cynthia-Ann.
First she explains how Cynthia-Ann became an Indian, then she told more about Cynthia-Ann and how she reacted to the situation. Lucy and her family were denying the fact that that Cynthia-Ann was their cousin only because of their skin color, and how it contrasted. Then Lucy tries to teach Cynthia-Ann English, then she sees that Cynthia-Ann is reluctant, and why.
When I was little, my parents always told me that I should not try to force someone to do something. If I did force someone to do something, then they would hate it and never try to do it. So I never tried to force someone to do anything.
After reading the book, it impressed on me more that I should try to put myself in someone else's shoes. If I do that then I will be able to understand why someone feels a certain way.

A hit!.......2007-09-23
This series is wonderful! Our two-year-old absolutely loves the Baby Loves Jazz series. We bought a few to start out, then ended up buying the whole set. Two months after acquiring them, she is still enamored and requests to listen to them and read them every day. Her favorites? Well, these are the words we hear most often: "Mommy, read Duck and Miles?" or "Daddy, listen to Duck and Miles?" Philly Joe is also high on the list. I recommend them all. The books stand out on their own, but the music is what makes this series really shine. For example, on Duck Ellington's CD, he does a great Monk style on one track, then switches to great impression of Coltrane's classic quartet on the next track, with a very nice McCoy Tyner impression. Lots of variety and high quality make this series worthwhile (though I could have done without Louis Lion's potty tune). Don't forget the Go Baby Go CD as well (a stand-alone CD without a book), which is perhaps a notch above the music on the book CDs. The ABC tune is her favorite on that one.
Excellent books!.......2007-04-06
My husband and I absolutely love this series. It was made with adults in mind. It's not too kidish. We have the Miles the Crocodile, Charlie Bird, Ella Elephant, & Duck Ellington so far. We also have the Baby Loves Jazz CD (go baby go). It's great too. My 1 year old loves them all. We've been listening to them since he was about 8 months old. He listens to them every morning and night before bedtime. He's even started dancing to them. Now that he's a little older. He brings me the books and we read the little stories. I also dubbed these for my nieces who are 3 & 6. They really like them too. You can't go wrong with these books that come with the cd's. They are an excellent teaching tool as well as entertainment.
Very Entertaining!.......2007-01-06
I had originally bought this and the Ella the Elephant for my almost 2 year old. It turns out that my almost 4 year old loves the accompanying CD and "reading" along with the book just as much. My husband and I are jazz lovers, and after seeing Baby Loves Jazz at the Monterey Jazz Festival 2006, knew this was an awsome way to introduce our sons to this wonderful music.
