Product Description
Like the first-century Pharisees, weve reduced Christianity to a set
of propositional beliefs. Truth is, weve gotten away from what it
really means to be a Christian. In The Jesus of Suburbia, Mike Erre
reveals that weve created a Jesus in our own image. In a fresh,
startling manner, Erre helps us understand that the real Jesus is
calling us to live, act, and think in ways that overturn the status
quo.
· Mike Erre is the pastor of a 4,000 member church in Costa Mesa, California.
· Mike and other authors and leaders have formed The Issachar Group, which is presenting the Christian faith in
new, compelling ways in print and in seminars
Customer Reviews:
Challenging book.......2007-05-10
The Jesus of Suburbia challenges the America church to become what Jesus intended: a fellowship of Christ-followers which redeems and transforms the culture around it, reaching out to others with the incredible love of God. Read this book to rediscover biblical Christianity.
GREAT BOOK!.......2007-03-21
Mike Erre is a fantastic writer! His book is to the point, but very entertaining. I would recommend it to everyone!
Let the revolution begin!.......2007-01-12
An excellent perspective on how we often sell out the true call of our faith for a consumer substitute. A challenge to guard against being so lulled by the comforts and trappings of suburban-American life that we literally begin to mix values that don't belong in our faith. That's called syncretism and as The Jesus of Suburbia makes clear, it's a big mistake.
To take the vision of this book seriously would lead to a beautiful living out of our faith as followers of Christ in the midst of our culture. This is excellent and accessible material that you can easily use in a small-group setting or to inform your teaching. As a pastor myself, I highly recommend it.
You may also be interested in learning more about ROCKHARBOR Church in Costa Mesa, CA where Mike Erre is the Teaching Pastor. It is a community of faith striving to live it's values in impressively unique ways despite it's location in the plush sun-drenched mall-topia of Orange County. If anyone has authority to speak of the challenges of truly being the Church in suburbia, it is Mike Erre with ROCKHARBOR as a living example.
A Good View of the Kingdom concept.......2007-01-10
Once you get around the tackiness of the "suburbia" theme, you can appreciate what Mike Erre is trying to do. His description of the two kingdoms (what's Caesar's and what's God's) is illuminating. He helps understand Christianity as an open door rather than a closed theology.
insightful and provocative.......2006-12-24
Mike Erre's book takes a look at the Jesus that has been created by modern religion and questions how true that view of him really is. This is a wonderful book with many unique insights that provoke the reader to consider the source of their beliefs and challenge him/her to action.

Book Description
Few women in the past three decades have lit up the American imagination like Cybill Shepherd. From wholesome beauty queen to saucy cover girl, from heartbreaking movie star (The Last Picture Show) to one of television's most beloved comediennes (Moonlighting and Cybill), she has imbued each of her roles--right down to her current passions as devoted mother of three, champion of women's issues, and sultry cabaret singer--with an indomitable spirit that has made her, at fifty, a female icon to an entire generation. Now in her much-anticipated memoir, she tells her remarkable story with humor, pathos, and more highlights than her famously blond hair. Cybill has absorbed the lessons of Southern womanhood, including the whispered message about sex: Wait until you're married, then you won't enjoy it, and certainly never speak of it. She gleefully disobeyed these and other rules of decorum in a career laced with controversy, featuring unforgettable cameos by Martin Scorsese, Peter Bogdanovich, Orson Welles, Robert De Niro, and Jeff Bridges. Whether stepping on Elvis's blue suede shoes or going toe-to-toe with Bruce Willis, Cybill has never held anything back, and it's all in Cybill Disobedience, including:
the night a network executive tried to barter thirteen episodes for a horizontal tour of Cybill's bedroom
why she'll never be invited back to Ryan O'Neal's beach house or Marlon Brando's island
the time she greeted David Letterman in nothing but a towel
the real reason two of television's most popular and acclaimed series, died premature deaths
how she made Richard Nixon blush for the first and only time in his life
From her Memphis roots to her insider's track in Hollywood, Cybill Shepherd is a woman who has weathered every onslaught and withstood every rebuke to emerge as a luminous model of endurance, courage, and an insatiable lust for life.
Customer Reviews:
The Cybill Strikes Back!.......2007-05-07
I wanted to read this book mainly to see what Cybill would say about Bruce Willis and Moonlighting, one of my all-time favorite shows, and although I was left wanting more, she does give a few interesting tidbits about them. But even if she hadn't this would still be a page turner.
Most references to Cybill Shepherd by the media over the years have been negative. I just wanted to hear her side of her story for a change and I have no problem with this so-called 'B-list' actor making a few bucks in the process.
While I don't approve of or agree with everything Cybill says she's done or believes in, this little book is a small interesting slice of history and a record of how things work behind the scenes of the modeling and acting professions. The message I got is 'proceed with extreme caution - or better yet choose another career.'
Also, my belief that Hollywood culture is depraved in general remains unshaken after reading this. And you certainly can't blame it all on Cybill Shepherd.
Even so, I appreciate what I believe is Cybill's candor about herself, the people she's met and her experiences which is written with a witty humor and a verbal style I appreciate.
You Know...She May Be A B-List Celebrity But This Isn't That Bad A Book.......2005-10-16
I don't know what compelled me to check this out from the library since I didn't really know who Cybill Shepherd was, but she kept me reading with her honesty and `dang-it-it's-true' breed of self-flattery. In this autobiography, the star of the '80's TV hit Moonlighting (when she mentioned Moonlighting, I was finally like, "Oh, I know who she is...") candidly talks about the cut-throat world of Hollywood, tells about how Hef, of Playboy fame, stole images from her nude scene and improperly published them, talks about an affair with Elvis (who "charmed" her by telling her in one of his pill-popping hazes about the time a doctor gave him an injection directly into the pupil of his eye!!!!!) and throws caution to the wind and dodges claims of skankhood by talking about a seemingly unending series of affairs with scores of married and unmarried men, from her beauty queen teen years in Memphis, well into her fifties. Shepherd name-drops and that's the making of this book since it's most interesting when the focus is not on her. She tells about having Orson Welles as a long-term house guest, about how she introduced Elvis to certain amorous technique, tells of clashes with Bruce Willis, whose ego was a match for her own, and provides tell-all revelations about some of the biggest stars in the movie business during the 1970's. Shepherd is also doggedly committed to certain feminist causes and gives ink to her views on them. This book is definitely a celebrity stroking her ego, but it's not dull or preachy and since it can be read in about two hours, it's not a bad way to spend a free afternoon.
I'm blonde, I'm beautiful, and don't you forget it!.......2005-05-20
Truly the title sums up the whole of this autobiography. I wonder if Ms. Shepherd hadn't believed so deeply in her ephemeral outer beauty, maybe others wouldn't have assumed that that's all she had going for her.
Conspicuously absent from her story were her relationships with her siblings, which were touched on ever-so-briefly toward the end, tellingly admitting that they had a tenuous connection at best, their sibling bonds having been sacrificed at the alter of Shepherd's career.
Cybill Shepherd spent her life being promiscuous, including involvment with married men, and lays it all out for the record, no matter how it makes her look. It's amazing to me that she never came away from fling after short-term fling not feeling used or taken advantage of.
The comment that rings the loudest to me, out of everything she crammed furiously into this book, was the fact that she tried to make '5 minutes feel like 5 hours' with her kids, as if that were possible. Although she does go on to admit that it is simply not possible to do it all.
Contradictory to me is the fact that Ms. Shepherd found lurid tabloid stories to be embarassing and insulting to herself and her children, but she voluntarily lays bare all her personal laundry.
I picked up this book because I fondly remember Moonlighting as must-see TV of my teenage years, Maddie Hayes and David Addison being the best on-screen couple of my generation. Although that was just one small part of Cybill's story, I did find the Hollywood insider stuff a fun guilty pleasure.
One last criticism - the subtitle is far too long and completely unnecessary, bordering on downright silly.
Example of one version of the Liberated Life.......2004-08-24
Cybill Disobedience : How I Survived Beauty Pageants, Elvis, Sex, Bruce Willis, Lies, Marriage, Motherhood, Hollywood, and the Irrepressible Urge to Say What I Think
by Cybill Shepherd
This was an interesting read and useful as a resource since it is a first person description of the kind of life one can lead as a liberated (using the pill) female. Not only was Cybill successful, but as she says, she was "a very, very, bad girl." Cybill did what she wanted to do.
Regardless of whether or not this sort of life should be recommended, it is certainly a resource that can be referred to as an example.
You have to be a big fan, to find all of this interesting........2004-04-19
Some interesting comments about show business, and about some of the people she worked with, and went to bed with. The last part, about her TV show, "Cybill," would only interest a BIG fan of the show. (Who did what and who said what about the show's individual episodes isn't exactly gripping reading.) (I'm glad it's a short book.)

I read baby book after baby book getting ready for my son. But the best parenting book there is is Baby Blues! Here's a comic that any new parent can appreciate...and commiserate with!!! It's hysterically funny and uncannily true to life. You can laugh at yourself and get your perspective back. Two thumbs up!!

An example of true friendship.......2007-09-11
Marian J Cocke was a true friend to Elvis Presley and it's evident in her book. She asked for nothing from him but his friendship. I received this book from my mother and read it the same day. I just couldn't put it down. I heard Marian speak at the 30th Anniversary Memorial service for Elvis that George Klein hosted at Memphis State University. I had heard of Marian and the fact that she was a private nurse to Elvis in later years. After hearing her speak so fondly of him and tell a couple of funny stories, I was intrigued and wanted to learn more about her. My mother who is a life long Elvis fan looked through her expansive collection of books and found that she had a copy of Marian's book and gave it to me. What a great story that is certainly a must read for the true Elvis fan.
What a touching tribute.......2007-07-21
I read this book in about 4 hours straight through. I have talked to this lady and she is a wonderful person and has nothing but love for Elvis and his memory. She doesn't dig up dirt or scandal, she just remebers Elvis the way he should be remembered-Great! Buy this book if you are an Elvis fan!
A Great Book about Elvis .......2007-07-13
This book is NOT for the intellectuals out there, but it IS for folks who are interested in a beautiful story about 2 friends. It was refreshing to read this book and it touched my heart deeply. Mrs. Cocke has continued to honor her dear friend Elvis with her annual dinner during Elvis week in August and she is truly a sweet person. I would love to meet her someday! I'd recommend this book to anyone who loves Elvis and who is interested in his final years.
a very good one.......2004-09-17
I loved the book thought it was really good and an easy read but did think the nurse did a lot of bragging about the fact she was close to Elvis. but it was a good book.
My heart is full.......2002-03-05
I recieved my book on Thursday and finished it on Sunday, I could not put it down. It is amazing to me how this book touched me. I laughed and cried, in this book I seen a side of Elvis that I never knew exisisted. and it helped change some negitive thoughts I had. this is one of the BEST books Ive read in a long time. thank you Marian j Cocke.

Customer Reviews:
cute barnyard tale.......2004-01-21
Elvis is a very proud rooster. He thinks that when he sees the light of day he must crow so that he the sun will come up. One day as dawn aproachs he tries to crow and a bug flies into his mouth. He canýt crow but the sun comes up any way. Elvis is so shocked he faits. His friends set up a trick in the barnyard to prove to him he is still needed.
I liked the way that Elvisýs friends made him feel special again. Thatýs what frinds are for. I also liked the illustrations.
I would recommed this book to others. If you like the Minnie and Moo series you will enjoy these books by the same author.
Customer Reviews:
the true Elvis.......2007-08-20
I just watched the Elvis dvds with Priscilla and Lisa, and realized that Priscilla still does not understand him, although she is trying. It inspired me to get a copy of this book again, which literally opened my mind up about what is real in life. I am 39, and first read this book when I was 21, and, as odd as it sounds, it brought me to my own personal spiritual breakthrough. This book adequately portrays who Elvis really was, and why his spirit was so much a part of his music in later years. You could feel it when you looked at him and heard him sing, and in the choice of his music. He cared about, or had personally experienced what he was singing about. His whole life was about figuring out why he was here - a larger purpose. He was a deeply spiritual person, who was constantly giving to others, and giving away his material goods and money, which reflected his study of "detachment". This book gives the spiritual foundation of his beliefs, that were his reasons for almost everything he did - crazy outfits, choice of songs etc all had deeper meanings. People knew he really cared - he was the real deal. His love of humanity and his giving spirit are just as much his legacy, as the music, and will continue to affect myself and others in positive ways.
A Look at Another Side of Elvis, that More People Could have Seen!.......2006-07-09
I have had this book for well over at least 15 years, since my teens. I started reading it something then, and then never finished it. Last summer I again started to read where I left off, and again never finished more than 20 pages more. I was up late last week, and there was a concert special documentary on the AMC Channel. "Elvis, this is who I am" or something like that. It was a documentary filmed up to his return to Las Vegas in 1970. I watched that, and was totally mesmerized by his performance, as I was to young to ever go to any Elvis concert. I felt like I was actually at the concert. So then I remembered this book that I never finished.
Needless to say, I picked up this book on Thurs. and I just finished it today, Sat. I wanted to know more, and what a great book to read to see how the real Elvis as a person really was, and what he really thought. I have heard all the traditional stories, and seen bios on TV, but this was totally enlightening, although at times sad.
I would say to anyone wanting to know how Elvis the man really was, this is a great story. I read other reviews where readers have slammed Larry Geller for telling some of the personal things maybe Elvis wouldn't want known, but think about it.......If Larry Geller would have written all good, with none of the bad things, etc...how believable would that have been? It probably would have made me more inclined to say "ya sure" if it was all "sugar-coated." Don't you think? People would have completely critisized that as well. I think he gave a great account of things, from his point of view. I really enjoyed this book, and getting to know another side of Elvis.
I cried at the end where the story winds down to his death. It was heartbreaking!!! I have never cried at reading a book, only watching a movie or something.
This book will inspire you to find out more about Elvis, possibly open you up more spiritually, and tug at your heart!!!
Highly recommend this read for any Elvis fan!!!
Larry and Elvis.......2006-04-03
This book was an ok read. the best part of the book were the last few chapters. Larry tells us how Elvis really felt about the people around him. the books he liked to read. how he felt about Tom Parker and his true feelings on Ginger and her family. the first part of the book is a lot of the same stories you can read in many other Elvis books. not a bad book just not the best Elvis book I have read.
Somewhat skeptical.......2005-12-18
This book is well written, yes, but I don't believe a few things at the end of the book for some reason. Elvis did want to write a book, but I don't think he would have liked the private things (some of) Geller wrote ( i.e. his libido.) I do like the list of books, the details, etc. and it is odd that I own quite a few of them, but after having this book for years, I must say, I think some of it is an invasion of Elvis' privacy. I think a little less of Mr. Geller for this, and I belive he wasn't the only closest friend of Elvis' at all. He was absent many years, yet he still did give him books when Elvis wanted them. He also seems to really dislike Priscilla. It is very confusing to me but the points I made above are just a few things that turned me off this book.
AN "AVID" FAN.......2005-05-03
IF I HAD TO READ ONLY ONE BOOK ABOUT ELVIS, THIS WOULD BE THE ONE!
