Book Description
The study of material culture is concerned with the relationship between persons and things in the past and in the present, in urban and industrialized and in small-scale societies across the globe. The
Handbook of Material Culture provides a critical survey of the theories, concepts, intellectual debates, substantive domains, and traditions of study characterizing the analysis of "things." This cutting-edge work examines the current state of material culture as well as how this field of study may be extended and developed in the future.
The
Handbook of Material Culture is divided into five sections:
- Section I maps material culture studies as a theoretical and conceptual field.
- Section II examines the relationship between material forms, the human body and the senses.
- Section III focuses on subject-object relations.
- Section IV considers things in terms of processes and transformations in terms of production, exchange and consumption, performance and the significance of things over the long-term.
- Section V considers the contemporary politics and poetics of displaying, representing and conserving material and the manner in which this impacts on notions of heritage, tradition and identity.
The
Handbook charts an interdisciplinary field of studies that makes a unique and fundamental contribution to an understanding of what it means to be human. It will be of interest to all who work in the social and historical sciences, from anthropologists and archaeologists to human geographers to scholars working in heritage, design and cultural studies.

Customer Reviews:
rich metadata inclusion.......2006-06-06
MXF is an ambitious idea that has been long overdue in the film and audio industries. It harks to the common problem of how to compress and store films, and do so digitally. There are tremendous advantages in doing so, including the ability to analyse and manipulate such films with ever more powerful software. The enduring problem has been various different compression and storage standards.
The authors describe how an industry wide effort has produced MXF. It certainly took long enough; 5 years! But perhaps the deal was worth the wait. Thumbing through the book, you can see that provision has been made for very flexible inclusion of metadata. A rich format that permits sophisticated file searching based on that metadata.
Plus, there is aid for transitioning between current encodings and MXF. The aim is clearly for MXF to be a global standard.

Book Description
The Self-Directed Learning Handbook offers teachers and principals an innovative program for customizing schooling to the learning needs of individual students— and for motivating them to take increasing responsibility for deciding what and how they should learn. Whether the students are struggling or proficient, the program is designed to nurture their natural passion for learning and mastery, challenging them to go beyond the easy and familiar so they can truly excel. The program can be introduced in stages in any middle or high school classroom and enables students of diverse abilities to design and pursue independent course work, special projects, or even artistic presentations, community field work or apprenticeships. Using this approach, the students take on an increasingly autonomous, self-directed role as they progress. The heart of the program is the action contract (or learning agreement) whereby the student sets challenging yet attainable goals, commits to a path for achieving them, and evaluates the results. Special emphasis is placed on developing skills and competencies that can serve the student well in his or her academic and career endeavors.

"How will you defuse a tense situation?".......2004-11-28
"An Action a Day Keeps Global Capitalism Away" by Mike Hudema contains 52 actions--which range from Gas-Mask Car Shopping to Radioactive Garbage-Picking. Some of the actions are familiar to me (the Candlelight Vigil, for example), and others were not (Radiohead). Action 47--Corporate Crime Fighters stresses that superheroes "draw media attention." Recently, "Father Xmas" and "Batman" protested rights of fathers by donning costumes and scaling the walls of Buckingham Palace. I wonder if they read this book? Each action includes a description, the rationale behind it, and a "what you need" section. Each action is also rated for fun, risk, and resources. Clearly most--not all--of the actions call for at least a small group of people. That said--this book is probably best for a group of activists who are looking for fresh new ways to express their political opinions. The book also includes a resource section that refers to websites of many activist groups--displacedhuman
An Amazing Activist Resource.......2004-05-04
I just read a copy of An Action a Day and was absolutely floored. The content is highly engaging, funny at times and extremely useful. As a long time activist I am always looking for new ways to build community and present issues and Hudema's guide does just that. It is insightful, is designed both as an aide and to prevent activist burnout and can be used by anyone from a long term activist to an eager beginner.
Thank you for adding some life and fun to organizing!!!!!

A must for Basketry Harvesting!!!.......2004-03-24
I've got to say when I was looking for a book to help me harvest plants and such for basketry making I would have never come across this book if it wasn't for my sister-in-Law. She told me that she had this great book about plants, history, etc. of the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, and Canada that might be helpful. I bought it hoping it might help. Well I've got the book and its perfect! The author did a wonderful job in discription of the plants, and their uses and she went on to other things that are very useful in basketry! I would recomend this book for anyone wanting to harvest plants for basketry. I would also recomend that the sellers of this book make it more available for those into basketry, not only because of the plants, but also the history of basketry!
Ethnobotany gem.......2001-08-06
Nancy Turner's book on plant uses by the First Peoples of British Columbia is a treasure house of ancient knowledge: how the plants of the Pacific Northwest were used by the original inhabitants. In an aboriginal technology, plants were used in almost every aspect of life: housing, clothing, transportation, weapons, fishing lines, basketry--all depended on skillful manipulation of plant materials. Organized by plant group, each plant's uses are discussed. The book will appeal to craft workers as much as anthropologists and other students of native woods lore because the methods of preparation are included.

Book Description
Small stone tools and arrow points are among the few remaining traces of human history that stretches back over 10,000 years. This illustrated book is a convenient guide to the projectile points that can be found in the Midwestern United States. Designed to be used as a field reference, the book provides a type name and a short description of the physical characteristics, age, and distribution for the most often found styles of projectile points.
Customer Reviews:
Too Little, Too Late.......2003-12-17
This small booklet is an incredibly abridged version of Justice's longer book "Stone Age Spear and Arrow Points." Unfortunately all the benefits of the longer text are lost in this shorter "field guide" version. (For details see my review of the book cited above.) Although this book is nice as a pocket manual to carry in the field, it contains only one line drawing of each point type and a very abbreviated description of the points. One must ask the question, "Who really wants to spend their time in the field looking at a book?" Nobody. In the field, one wants to find artifacts. That is, leave the books at home and get down to the business of surveying and collecting. With this said, don't waste your money on this field guide. The larger, more profusely illustrated, and vastly more detailed version is just $10 more in paperback. Buy that instead!
