Book Description

This book presents a unique opportunity to read many original source materials written by authors representing diverse points of view and a broad spectrum of history in the field of education. It offers a personal philosophical perspective on the work of teaching; the function of schools in our society; and the relationships between education and productivity. Unlike most introductions to the profession, the issues raised in this book bring readers face-to-face with themselves and with the challenging dilemmas they will confront as teachers. It provides exceptional coverage of community and the changing social, cultural, linguistic, and ethnic landscape of our society and its impact on schools, children, and teaching. In addition, the book answers the following questions: What are the relationships between culture, society, and education?, What are the dynamics of daily life in schools as institutions in particular organizational and community contexts?, In what ways are gender, language, culture, race, social class, and the relationship between school and work important to education?, and What orientations and strategies can teachers adopt that will enable them to become more transformative educators? For individuals contemplating a career in teaching.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome anthology of essays!.......2007-07-05

Sometimes a little recondite, this book is an awesome report on the disparities between socioeconomic educational experiences. The essays that showed the dichotomy beween the lower and upper economic classes really made me reflect on my own education and its impact on my current economic living situation. It is a profound resource for teachers who strive to understand the expectations and education stratified through American educational institutions.

Book Description

This thought-provoking book examines education as a cultural phenomenon and explores the implications of this perspective on schooling, multicultural education, educational development, and the process of teaching and learning. The authors combine the concepts of anthropology, education, schooling, teaching, and learning into an insightful introduction to the study of the cultural basis of education. Key topics include conflict between core and youth values, minority languages in the classroom, contemporary analysis of the IQ issues, recent school reform efforts, a new look at approaches to multicultural education, the postmodern conception of childhood and its educational implications, a discussion of performance assessment, communication and learning styles, and intercultural communication and competence. For teachers or any individuals interested in the relationship between social context and educational issues.

3 out of 5 stars Very Well Written, but Bashes White People a Bit Too Much.......2000-08-28

I read this book for a class called "Culture and Schooling" at my university. While I thought the book was well written and opened my eyes to some of the ways our education system has neglected and often abused minorities, it tends to promote a hostile attitude towards the white majority. I think Pai and Adler could have made their points without all of this "white bashing."

2 out of 5 stars Ironicly, This Book About Teaching Literacy Lacks Editing.......2007-05-12

While the information in this book may be accurate and helpful, I cannot believe it went to print in its horribly edited form. Many readers may not notice (or care) about this condition, but as a former copy editor and someone who cares about grammar, spelling, punctuation, and consistent format (as all teachers should), I am appalled at the lacking in these areas. The existing errors make it difficult to concentrate on the material. The editor and publisher should be ashamed, particularly given that this is a book about literacy.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time or money.......2007-05-09

This book was useless. It carried material that was not on the MTEL. Many of the answers to the practice questions were actually incorrect, and throughout the book there were typos and grammatical errors. I'm guessing this is a cookie-cutter production that replicates this book for every state, and that it is written by someone for whom English is a second language.

1 out of 5 stars review of MTEL foundations overpriced and overestimated.......2007-04-11

This book was way over priced especially when you compare the prices of other MTEL books. The questions were almost silly in nature and the rationales for the answers were to reprimand the reader and not give the true rationale for the best answer. Very confusing. They were not questions that would depict a true classroom scenerio

Book Description

Much more than a "how-to/activities" book, this textbook gives students a strong background in the conceptual, theoretical, and philosophical issues in multicultural education. Cultural Diversity and Education is designed to help pre-service and in-service educators clarify the philosophical and definitional issues related to pluralistic education, derive a philosophical position, design and implement effective teaching strategies that reflect ethnic and cultural diversity, and prepare sound guidelines for multicultural programs and practices. This book describes actions that educators can take to institutionalize educational programs and practices related to ethnic and cultural diversity. The scope of this edition has been broadened to include a focus on gender, disability, and giftedness. The significant changes that were made in this edition necessitated that the title be changed. Multiethnic Education: Theory and Practice, the title of this book for its three previous editions, no longer accurately describes its contents. Consequently, the title of the book was changed to better reflect the broader coverage of its content. For pre-service and in-service teachers, and anyone interested in educational diversity.

2 out of 5 stars Hipocritical.......2006-06-03

The book attempts to discuss the importance of multiculturalism within America's educational system, yet, the author's method of discussion throughout the book portrays biased and hipocritical views. The book intends to inform readers to stray away from prejudices and personal opinions, yet, the author seems to include his own prejudice views making his book hipocritical of the very point he attempts to conjure. He makes various comments throughout the book that disclose negative personal opinions upon current education within America's schools and educator's "white" methods of teaching. I agree with his claims on the need for educators to incorporate a more multicultural perspective in teaching, but he seems to boast more on his negative views and multicultural issues in education throughout the book, rather than including ideas and advice for educators on improving it.

This book is so jammed packed with ideas, I cannot wait to get back into the classroom this fall to try some of them. The ideas presented in this book will hopefully make it easier to connect with and implement activities for culturally different learners. The book also gave me a new perspective and philosophy for learners from different cultures.

      Book Description

This innovative introduction to the theory and practice of sports coaching emphasizes the social context of training, developing, and managing athletes. The book argues that although coaches commonly employ techniques such as feedback, reflection, and a variety in instructional models and learning styles, most do so implicitly and without fully understanding the complex interplay between coach, player, content, and social context. By defining learning as a social practice rather than a simple transmission of facts, the book aims to deepen the coach's understanding of the coaching process, to help coaches systematically develop their programs and to get the best out of their athletes.

          Book Description

The graphic representation of client experience has long been acknowledged as an invaluable therapeutic tool. In this pragmatic book, the authors have brought the use of the most widely used graphic device—the family genogram—into the wider context of community and culture, to help counselors and therapists better understand individuals and families-in-context. For clinicians as well as clients, the community genogram is a practical and versatile tool that places emphasis on the positive strengths and resources that can be brought to bear in the therapeutic process.

          Features:
          * Helpful practice exercises throughout the text designed to demonstrate the power of the community genogram to complement a host of individual and systems treatment methods.
          * A variety of visual models that clients and clinicians can adapt for their own use.
          * Chapters addressing the use of genograms in relation to issues across the lifespan, across generations, and across cultures.
          * A wealth of cases and interviews that illustrate ways to use community genograms with a variety of clients, in different phases of counseling and therapy, and involving service providers.
          * Questions and strategies that can be used to determine the significant relationships, events, and situations that have shaped the clients' experiences over time.
          * A detailed analysis of one session, showing the nuances of using a community genogram to explore issues of identity, power, and oppression.
          * Suggestions for how to use the community genogram in the service of ongoing client assessment, treatment, and evaluation.

5 out of 5 stars Pragmatic guide for accessing community/culture in therapy .......2005-03-12

Rigazio-DiGilio, Ivey, Kunkler-Peck, and Grady do an excellent job of describing theoretical constructs, processes, and practical applications for using community genograms in counseling in order to build on resources and access strengths within individuals, families, and communities. This book goes beyond the rhetoric of including culture and context as important therapeutic considerations, offering those in the helping fields a graphic tool to respectfully and collaboratively explore these dimensions with clients. I found it particularly exciting that the authors offered practical guidance for intervening at a community level and drawing from culture and community to enhance the liberating potential of therapeutic encounters. This is a "must-read" for counselors and therapists who strive to find ways to more intentionally consider individuals and families within their social, historical, and cultural contexts.
