Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Easy way to review.......2007-10-01

I am finding this book a great way to review. It is easy to understand as the author explains each question and answer. With a tight schedule, this book can be read for just a few minutes at a time without losing the flow of the content.

5 out of 5 stars Good Review.......2007-08-31

This study guide covers many aspects of counseling that were either not covered or quickly taught in my counseling classes. It also does a wonderful job of reinforcing the ideas that were taught in class. This book is written in a wonderfully informative and entertaining style. I have not yet taken my exam but am confident that with all the information discussed in the book I should do very well on the exam.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive review and tutorial!.......2007-08-14

My recommendation of this book is based mainly on my test scores. Using only Rosenthal's book as a study guide, I passed the NCE with flying colors. It is easy to use and extremely helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Good resource for NCE exam.......2007-08-09

I would recommend this book for anyone taking the NCE exam. I recently passed the NCE exam along with two of my co-workers. This text is a great starting point for anyone studying for the NCE, but I would recommend going into more depth then just studying from Rosenthal's book. The book sets the groundwork for what the test looks likes and feels like, but the actual NCE questions are alot harder and more specific then what Rosenthal provides. I would recommend finding texts in career counseling, research methods, and stats and becoming fimilar with all the basic concepts. Combining Rothenthal's book with texts cited above seems to be the recipe for success

5 out of 5 stars Excellent study guide for NCE.......2007-07-28

This study guide was an excellent preparation for the NCE. The book gives hundreds of sample questions, in depth explanations of answers, and test taking tips. I would recommend this guide to anyone preparing for a major counseling exam.

Counseling, SW and other Helping Professions students and professionals.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Easy-to-read textbook detailnig the counseling process.......1999-07-07

Hackney & Cormier offer a simple stage presentation of counseling that explains the process to readers in a revealing way. Each stage is detailed, and various intervention genres are explored. At times, however the book does not flow well. The authors do not take enough time to show how each aspect of counseling ties together. Hackney & Cormier, however, are sensitive -- almost to a fault -- to multicultural issues.

4 out of 5 stars Great at process; tainted at points by political correctness.......1999-05-26

I've used this as a text for two years to teach the process of counseling at the undergraduate level. It's quite good at setting forth an understandable five-step process of counseling. The taint of political correctness rears its ugly head at points when the authors tacitly presume the morality of homosexual unions--but these can instances can be bracketed off. Most in need of rework is chapter nine on behavioral interventions; undergraduates find it difficult to digest this as written.

5 out of 5 stars Substance Abuse; Info for School Counselors - Review.......2007-01-19

This book clearly explains the relationship an addict has with their drug of choice, so that someone who may never have used/abused can understand the seemingly irrational behavior of the addict. But, the author does not stop there. Harrison goes on to explain various reasons why the addict's family may knowingly or unknowingly support the addict's habit, thus keeping the addict from recovery.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to the 8 CACREP Standards.......2001-01-13

I am currently preparing to take the National Counselor Exam. Since several years had passed after completing my counselor training, I decided I needed to brush up on a good introduction to the field of counseling. THE WORLD OF THE COUNSELOR was an excellent choice. It covers all areas which will be included on the exam. It is written in a very easy to read style. If you are limited on the amount of time you have to study for the NCE, this book is a good choice. I feel more confident in my level of knowledge after reading this book.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is preparing to take the NCE.

3 out of 5 stars ok not great.......2007-09-14

good info on the test itself, good basic review of topics but not enough detail at times to really be helpful, not well written. Good place to start studying for the exam but won't be sufficient on its own.

2 out of 5 stars study guide review.......2007-06-09

I read this book to study for my comps, and I found it to be too general of information. I needed more specifics on theories of Career Development and Human Development. Then the practice test was soo hard compared to the information given in the readings. In my degree program, we covered a lot more in depth info than what was provided here.

4 out of 5 stars NCE Study Guide.......2007-05-07

I found the Helwig manual very helpful. Its explanations and examples are more clear and to the point than the Encyclopedia of Counseling. The Encyclopedia was more like the IDIOTS GUIDE TO..which I find irritating because of all the cutesy filler talk. I like the Manual's detailed step by step examples to illustrate key terms.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Guide.......2007-01-30

This review guide is very throrough and extensive, including items that I have never heard of in my education thus far. It has also been a great extra tool to supplement my current couple and family and group therapy classes. I highly recommend this item.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent study guide.......2007-01-13

Guide arrive quickly and in perfect brand-new condition. Great format to help study for the NCE as well as state license exams. This will help me prepare for the exams, many thanks!!!

5 out of 5 stars The School Counselor's Bible.......2001-03-24

There is an acute public health crisis in this nation; a crisis precipitated by the burden of suffering experienced by children with mental health needs, and their families.

Today's students are challenged by an array of concern that directly impact their well-being. Child abuse, family dysfunction, economic dislocation, and the prevalence of violence, sex, and the objectification of woment in our popular culture all influence childrens' lives each day. Children represent 100% of our future. Therefore fostering social and emotional health in children as a component of healthy child development must be a national priority.

The services of the school counselor should be aimed at preventing problems, focusing on developmental issues, and addressing critical issues that pose an immediate threatto the student's emotional social, and psychological well-being.

Contemporary school counseling services are essential to a schools' educational misssion. John Schmidt's text provides an overview of the school counseling profession, including the components of a comprehensive program of services and the current legal, ethical and professional issues that are important to school counselors. It is not only a scholarly presentation of the responsibilities and ethical obligations of the school counselor, it is also a practical guide for beginning counselors. Other topics include the history of the school counseling profession, the varying roles of the school counselor, individual versus group practice, and student appraisal.

This book is highly recommended for student's in school counseling programs, as well as beginning counselors.

3 out of 5 stars Missed the Target.......2006-11-05

I was in instructed to buy this book for a School Psychology Practicum class, after reading several chapters I believe the book would be a better fit for a Counseling/Psychology Graduate Internship class. The information included is a good review for a student on internship and helps in bringing all the information learned throughout the program together. But that is all the book was for me, just a review -- no new information not learned in all the other graduate classes.

5 out of 5 stars Internship.......2006-02-24

Baird cuts to the chase. The overwhelming issues facing interns and professionals in psychology and the helping professionsis are presented in a neat, crisp, easy to navigate form. Wwith a light heart, he blends the old standards with new healing models. He has done the work. I will use this many times in the life of my career.

3 out of 5 stars Only Book On Internships........2005-10-20

I had to purchase this book for a psychology practicum class. There simply isn't anything else around to fill it's shoes. That means we are stuck with it.

That said, the book does what it sets ot to do. I will keep it, as I will prabably have to use it in grad school, and it will be a lot more relevant to me as a full intern working in a clinic.

5 out of 5 stars Care Givers Companion in working with diversity.......2004-12-22

Mediators--doctors, social workers, librarians, and others--will definitely find this book very useful in understanding the issues.

For professions, such as the library and information, which does not prioritize internship in its training, are sure to benefit, nevertheless, from the other contents of the book.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource book for counselors in training........1997-10-25

I have not seen a more comprehensive and readable text available for counseling and psychotherapy trainees preparing for their practical experience. Targeting the beginner, this book offers guidance and insight for several aspects of the training experience that are often overlooked or underemphasized by instructors. More advanced trainees will benefit from this text as well. The chapter on Clinical Writing is the clearest discussion of this subject that I have seen, giving understandable examples of common problems exhibited by trainees, and practical advice for improvement of clinical writing skills. Chapters on stresses encountered in the profession, and self-care strategies for the counselor will not only provide sound advice, but will serve to validate burnout-prevention practices to a student population that is often already over-extended. I can't tell you how pleased I am to be able to offer this book to my students.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars School Counselor Review for Praxis.......2006-11-03

The study guide was accurate in assisting to prepare for the test. Would definitely recommend the purchase of the guide.

4 out of 5 stars Preparing for the Test.......2006-02-25

I found this book to be extremely helpful in preparing myself to take the Praxis test for certification as a principal. The only thing I did not like about the book was the fact that it is for 3 separate tests. The parts that applied specifically to me were very helpful, but there was so much extraneous information regarding the other tests in the book. I would much rather have had additional practice items for the test I was taking rather than the many chapters that were a waste to me. I passed the test, though, so I believe it accomplished what it was to accomplish ie. making me feel a lot less apprehensive about the test.
