Book Description

Though burlesque has survived in the back of our cultural consciousness after being pushed aside by modern stripping in the '50s, the revival that began in the early '90s has finally brought burlesque back to the forefront of popular culture.

Evolving from an underground movement to a nearly mainstream fetish, neo-burlesque embraces a wide variety of modern interpretations all based on the classic bump and grind and "taking it off" with a wink and a smile. From classic tributes to punk rock revisionists, women of all ages, sizes, and backgrounds are rediscovering burlesque and reinventing it. A sense of heightened imagination, empowerment and energy are being delivered to the stage, perhaps even more so than during the historic heyday, the Golden Age of Burlesque.

Slipping behind the scene, Burlesque and the New Bump-n-Grind undresses the issues of feminism, modern popularity, and what exactly draws the unique and varied audience members to the shows. The women-and men!-of burlesque also receive their fleshed-out dues by a categorized peek into the various troupe styles including classical, re-creationists, revivalists, modern, circus, performance art, political, queer, bawdy singers and comics.

Peppered throughout the book are full-color and black-and-white photographs that fully instill the picturesque dance into the reader's mind.

Founder of one of the first neo-burlesque troupes, author Michelle Baldwin (a.k.a, Vivienne Va-Voom) has helped to bring the lost art of burlesque back to the forefront of pop culture. Baldwin has served as the creative director, choreographer, music director, costumer, financial head, and performer for her troupe, "Burlesque As It Was." Her deep immersion into this art form has provided her with a rare view into the growth and evolution of the revival.

5 out of 5 stars New Burlesque Represents!.......2006-06-07

I may be biased, since I appear in this book, but if I weren't proud to be a part of it I wouldn't recommend it!

Michelle does a wonderful job of describing the energy and glamour of the New Burlesque scene, with tons of color photographs to emphasize the passion this rediscovered art inspires. While striptease, even retro striptease, is nothing new, the current New Burlesque scene brings it into a fresh environment where the performances take on a new meaning and a new sense of pure joy. Whether you're a fan of girls who make you wriggle or girls who make you giggle, you'll love the performances of the ladies in this book--and the gentlemen, too!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Delicious.......2004-09-14

Not only does this book serve as delicious eye candy, but the author does an amazing job interlacing facts with true experiences capturing the crazed phenomenon of burlesque revival. I really admire the energy that comes across in Baldwin's writing it makes me want to go out and try it! I would recommend this to all of you feminists out there who also like showing a little leg.

2 out of 5 stars a worthy topic, but not the comprehensive guide it could be.......2004-09-03

As a costuming student, amateur burlesque researcher, and preformer, I was excited to see someone devote a book exclusively to new burlesque. The book has some cute pictures and a few quotes from some of the rising stars of the scene, but unfortunately, the overall content is shallow and the structure is jumbled. The format of the text is too jumpy to really provide a reader with a timeline and often repeats itself. Some rigorous cutting-and-pasting would have helped immesely on that front, but the more suble deficiency is the lack of academic analysis or critical commentary. It reads like a high school book report, merely stating facts and names, but not tying them together. Almost anyone could have researched and written this book by simply looking at a few burlesque troupes' websites. In fact, I wonder if that is what happened.
Until a more thorough text is published, get your history lessons from reviews in journals and magazines; the recent media blitz has got you covered. As for images, almost all the new burlesques soloists and troupes have lovely websites with gorgeous studio portraits and fun live snapshots.

Reviewed by: John A. Mangarella for Small Spiral Notebook

When author Michelle Baldwin found her way into Denver's Mercury Café to see her first burlesque show, a career was not only born but the first lines of this delightful study of burlesque took shape. The is not just a book, it's the best type of book, a time machine back to the last century when English actress Lydia Thompson toured the U.S.A., shocking, tantalizing and conquering the American stage.

Baldwin's meticulous research, her obvious affection for burlesque, both legendary and contemporary, compels every page of this book to dance before the reader's eyes with a history of women who were not only ahead of their time but stole the heart of America at every whistle-stop. From the crowds that mobbed the Chicago World's Fair ogling the notorious Little Egypt through the advent of Mae West as she descends on Broadway with her first show, provocatively entitled "SEX". This book packs a lot of fast facts that peel away with the ease of silk clothing dropping to the stage floor.

She presents the burlesque of comedy and song, of variety acts and supple curves. From the hootchy kootchy dancers of the 1890's through Sam Scribner's Columbia Wheel, the sexually censored main circuit of burlesque houses that competed with the wild ride of the Minsky Brothers who founded stock burlesque troops and rented inexpensive theaters in poor neighborhoods that boasted cheap tickets and expensive sizzle. Eventually, Minsky's rise caused the powerful but restrictive Scribner to stop censoring his shows by allowing nudity and blue humor.

Ms. Baldwin's anecdotal choices are fascinating. Who invented the modern striptease? Was it Mae Dix in 1917 who accidentally removed her collars and cuffs to ignite the audience into pure wildness? Or was it Hinda Wassau who was pushed onto the stage half dressed by a stage manager? Or was it... read it for yourself-where the clothing falls is tantalizing. You can almost hear the brassy music rising from the orchestra pit as mentions of Gypsy Rose Lee, Sally Rand, Ann Corio and Georgia Sothern form their own girl shows and take them on the road. Even though they danced in Middle America, in small theaters and carnivals, they filled every seat and brought cosmopolitan glamour to venues that were way, way, way, way off Broadway. The author covers burlesque's high popularity as well as its low periods when threatened by repressive times as well as a new breed of strippers that are somewhat hardcore. Even though burlesque overcame censorship its toughest battle was with an era that was much more permissive. This is where Ms. Baldwin's book separates as provocatively as Sally Rand's fans. A major portion of "Burlesque" is devoted to "The New Bump-N-Grind" and all those suggestively creative performers that have successfully picked up the mantle of Gypsy Rose Lee, Ann Corio and other legends to show us what IS burlesque today.

Ms. Baldwin relates the resurgence of burlesque with even more passion because she's living it, thus endowing the second part of the book with a "You Are There" style that really does allow the reader to tour with all the contemporary performers. Jennie Lee, known as "The Bazoom Girl" in her heyday began assembling her massive collection of burlesque memorabilia on a goat farm in the California desert. Following Miss Lee's death, Dixie Evans, a fellow dancer who is a stunning Marilyn Monroe look-alike, began transforming the memorabilia into a museum. Dixie Evans also started the Miss Exotic World Competition which has drawn larger crowds each successive year. She also wrote the forward to this book.

"Burlesque And The New Bump-N-Grind" stems from the past and blossoms in the present and future. Ms. Baldwin's chore at describing the world of burlesque as it is today encompasses hundreds of entertainers and dozens of festivals and shows. Make no mistake about it, as this amply photographed book demonstrates, today's burlesque is every bit as sexy, funny, risque, respectable, wicked and addictive as the movements of Gypsy Rose Lee or Ann Corio or any of the great acts from decades gone by. The sumptuous photographs indicate that these new women of burlesque have taken some of their inspiration from the past. There are exquisite costumes reminiscent of the Ziegfield Follies, something to remind us of Weimar Berlin and Marlene Dietrich's The Blue Angel. There are costumes from the Silent Era and later Hollywood as well as some from the Old West. Ms. Baldwin covers all the ground, touching off on some of the men performing baggy pants comedy as well the bands that put some blood pressure into the music as the women bump-n-grind.

In quoting a paragraph from the book about contemporary burlesque's allure: "Modern glamour is the sleek, sexy aesthetic of technology. Everything from the ultrathin models featured on magazine covers to the tiniest cell phone to the most unobtrusive stereo speaker sets the pace of modern life. Burlesque glamour, on the other hand, is larger than life, filled with innuendo, and coated with glitter. Burlesque offers something different than the standard mass-produced culture. In burlesque, girls can have curves, often big curves. They can be loud and funny and still be sex symbols. The basic elements of burlesque are things that are missing from contemporary life."

"Burlesque And The New Bump-N-Grind" teases and pleases. On a historic level, Michelle Baldwin's book should be a welcome addition to any writer's research library because of the many different areas of burlesque she covers. As for just pure fun, a bit of skin that reveals a heart much more naked, "Burlesque And The New Bump-N-Grind" is a very pleasurable read. Buy the book, and then check out the listing of websites advertising shows all across the country. Then buy yourself a ticket and go have some fun.

Book Description

Before it was a show business genre, burlesque was an attitude. It was parody, outrageousness, exaggeration, pastiche--even grotesquerie. If in 19th- and 20th-century America the term came to signify a variety show of light comedy, dance, and strip tease, eventually descending to a plateau of triviality, cheap sexuality, and predictable gaudy costumes, it has now--Woo Hoo! Ladies!--been resuscitated. (It's amazing what a feminist revolution can accomplish when pasties and sequins are introduced.) In New Burlesque, Katharina Bosse takes a trip across the United States to meet and document every proponent of the unabashed renaissance that she can get her camera lens around. Her colorful series of let-it-all-hang-out portraits of Babette la Fave, Kitten DeVille, Kitty Crimson, Ruby Darling, Dirty Martini, D'Milo, Starlet O'Hara, Scarlette Fever, Ursulina, and their many sisters give a wild, wicked stage to the very grown-up darlings of a new century. Whether pictured in a saloon or a kitchen, by the side of a country road or in front of a parking lot, these dames show it just how they please.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful... but brief.......2007-01-06

The images in this small book are beautiful photographs of modern burlesque dancers, but I was really hoping for more information than is provided in the very very brief section at the back of the book. Could've done better...

3 out of 5 stars Portraits of Neo-Burlesque Queens........2005-11-22

This book is a photographic tribute to the new Queens of Burlesque. Each portrait captures luscious Burlesque performers in unusual surroundings. The afterward is a scholarly article on the photographs and the neo-burlesque revival, perhaps best appreciated by those with a background in art historical jargon. The photographs are stunning, and this book will likely be a collectors item in years to come, as you cannot see many of these performers in any other books. If you already own "The Bare Truth...Stars of Burlesque from the 40s & 50s" you should invest in this book--think of it as the contemporary companion volume. My only complaint is that the book was too short, and that I wish the format was larger--it would have been a lovely coffee-table book!

• Cultural history plus celebrity anecdotes

• Up-to-the-minute look at the current New York cabaret scene

Intimate Nights is the definitive history of cabaret as it evolved in New York City in the years after World War II. But that doesn't mean it's dry and academic. Good heavens, no. Settle in for racy tales of nightlife, revealed in interviews with dozens of the people who lived it: Bobby Short, Eartha Kitt, Mabel Mercer, Bette Midler, and many more. Author James Gavin has tracked down rare, early stories about the legends who came out of New York nightclubs—and that means Barbra Streisand, Woody Allen, Nichols and May, Johnny Mathis, Carol Burnett, Lenny Bruce, among others. Part cultural history, part celebrity gossip, Intimate Nights offers an intimate look at the creatures of the nightclubs.

5 out of 5 stars LIFE IS INDEED A CABARET, OLD CHUM!.......2006-07-08

If life is truly a cabaret, than James Gavin has written a spectacular history of that night life. This updated edition of Gavin's 1992 book of the same title concerns the history of cabaret in America--and it's a real dazzler.
Beginning in the speakeasies of the '30s and progressing through the glamorous '40s and '50s to the repressive '50s, the book takes us to the wide-open sexuality of the '60s and '70s, the devastation from HIV of the '80s and early '90s to where we stand today. It's a show-biz history of an admittedly small niche in American entertainment, but an extraordinarily rich and creative one. From Bobby Short and Mabel Mercer through Phyllis Diller and Barbra Streisand and Peter Allen to the Callaway sisters, Barbara Cook and Ute Lemper, there is something here for all tastes and all moods.
The art of cabaret--and be sure it is an art--is the experience of sitting in a quiet club, some glamorous, some sewers, and listening to a singer perform . . . seemingly just for you. Old standards are reinterpreted, new material marveled at, forgotten songs recalled. The audience in encouraged to feel, think--and maybe have a drink or two. Scrupulously researched, Gavin has managed to not only create a chronological history (including the stars, and the genius accompanists, crafty presenters, scummy landlords and adoring fans) but lovingly describes performers and performances. But be forewarned: The discography at the end of the book is incredibly comprehensive, and by the time you've finished reading about these legendary talents, you're going to want pull out the charge card and hit amazon.com
So stop sitting alone in your room, buy this book, and discovers just how much more music you can hear play, if, old friend, you come to the cabaret.

5 out of 5 stars What an enjoyable book.......2006-06-30

Gavin has done a lot more than just research the time period he covers with such liveliness in this comprehensive book about New York nightclub entertainment. He really seems to have immersed himself in the world that he describes, and his enthusiasm shines through on every page. This is a wonderful introduction to an essential part of entertainment history.

Book Description

A mystery set in the underworld of burlesque theater, The G-String Murders was penned in 1941 by the legendary queen of the stripteasers-the witty and wisecracking Gypsy Rose Lee. Narrating a twisted tale of a backstage double murder, Lee provides a fascinating look behind the scenes of burlesque, richly populated by the likes of strippers Lolita LaVerne and Gee Gee Graham, comic Biff Brannigan and Siggy the g-string salesman. This is a world where women struggle to earn a living performing bumps and grinds, have gangster boyfriends, sip beer between acts and pay their own way at dinner.

The story unfolds in a New York theater modeled on the legendary Minsky's, prone to raids by corrupt city cops and fierce competition among strippers. When one performer is found strangled with a g-string, no one is above suspicion. But when a second murder follows, the trail-and the action-really heats up. In the police procedural that follows, a host of clueless coppers faces off against the theater's tough-talking guys and dolls, and it's clear that Gypsy and her cohorts will have to crack the case themselves.

The basis of the 1943 film Lady of Burlesque starring Barbara Stanwyck, The G-String Murders was the first of two murder mysteries written by Gypsy Rose Lee. A natural-born raconteur, Lee also contributed short pieces to The New Yorker and hosted her own television talk show; even her unparalleled stardom in the burlesque world was attributed more to her witty banter than to her risque moves. It is this fabled wit, along with Gypsy's brassy sociology, that make The G-String Murders a must-read primer of sex, commerce and urban living.

4 out of 5 stars Witty and fun.......2006-11-19

First: I can't speak to the typographical errors, because I own a different edition, but typos are incredibly annoying, so you might want to poke around for something like the 1984 Penguin paperback, which I have.

Now: This is great fun! It's not the great American novel, but it's certainly well-enough written. She sympathetically illustrates the interesting (and now bygone) world of burlesque theater with observant touches, a fully developed wry voice and a few bawdy winks. Absolutely soaked in atmosphere.

I read a lot of mysteries and I'll admit the murder mystery plot is no great shakes, but I really have to give credit to her writing. I was reminded of Kinky Friedman's detective fiction, which like this is based on a semiautobiographical protagonist and displays a love for the scenes of the city -- and like this has the occasional truly felicitous description.

As for the depictions of women, yes, many of the performers (male and female) snipe at each other and fight, but there is also an undercurrent of intelligence and camaraderie that comes through clearly. Gypsy and friend Gee Gee have a closeness whose texture feels both casual and real; the women are (mostly) street-smart and funny and *modern* in that way that can almost seem anachronistic to today's reader. But that's the beauty of it: This was really written at the time by somebody who knew that scene inside and out, so you know it's grounded in reality.

Again: It's not great literature, it's even a bit cartoony, but it's a real kick.

1 out of 5 stars She's at it again! Why did Gypsy Rose Lee pair up with Rachel Shteir.......2006-08-29

I had to take a look at this book just like I did Rachel Shteir's previous book "Striptease" to see if the online reviews were true. Sadly, they were. Like "Striptease", this book was full of typo's and appeared poorly organized and written. One would think that Ms. Shteir would have learned from her previous book--which also had similarly poor reviews. I wonder why Gypsy Rose Lee paired up with her. I can only guess at Ms. Shteir's fascination with this topic: my guess is that she wishes she could be a stripper herself (or maybe she is). I base this in part on a meeting with Ms. Shteir a year ago when I invited her to write about a professional conference I organized and presented at: she wore a very low-cut blouse as she interviewed people. I'm no prude but this was highly inappropriate and distracting people told me. On top of that, her article was chock full of misquotes, errors in fact, and adopted a perspective that nobody who attended the conference could relate to. Oh well, I can only hope that Ms. Shteir's next project will be more accurate and also that she will make clear her real interest in her subject matter. Gypsy Rose, I guess we both made the same mistake: trusting someone like Ms. Shteit to help us tell a story who didn't have the heart or the skills to pull it off.

2 out of 5 stars G-String Murders Lacks Zing.......2006-02-26

Being a huge fan of Golden Age mystery fiction and also an admirer of Gypsy Rose Lee, I was very eager to read this book. I also have the film "Lady of Burlesque" with Barbara Stanwyck, which follows the book fairly closely and which I thorougly enjoy. However, although Gypsy Rose Lee "stars" in the story which involves murders among the striptease acts in an Opera House, the writing is rather uninvolving and I who read voraciously had trouble staying interested. I also confess to being rather annoyed at the petty squabbling between the women which fails to capture the friendships that also develop between women. In fact, the characterizations remain on an extremely superficial level and the few colorful instances (almost "pre-code" sort of moments) do not rescue the story or make it any more compelling. I found myself bored and wanting to read something else. It's a pity, because I truly did want to like it and the premise was promising.

My conclusion: Gypsy Rose Lee was a very beautiful woman and I imagine a powerful and provocative performer with some class to boot, but she is not a great writer by any stretch of the imagination. Being a great performer or leading a colorful life does not necessarily mean that you can write; writing is a whole other art form and too many people think it requires no particular skill since one is not required to do eye-high kicks or hit high notes. They're absolutely wrong, as misfires such as this demonstrate (although I've read far worse).

A disappointment, but may fill the bill for someone looking for a light read. To use an apt cliche: mediocre fare.

3 out of 5 stars Kind of hard to stay with.......2006-02-24

I love that the Women Write Pulp people have reprinted this title. When I was a girl Gypsy had already hung up her G-string, but I loved Gypsy's talk show. My parents were slightly alarmed, but I found her amazing in a way I couldn't put words to at that age - brassy, ballsy, and uncowed I would say now. But I found this mystery very tough to get through. The writing left a lot to be deisred and unlike some other pulps it doesn't move along very well. Still I love that it's out there and it's historical/hystorical value makes it worth a look.

1 out of 5 stars The worst proofed book in the universe.......2005-12-02

This book is by far the worst proofed book I've ever read in my life. I can't believe I'm writing this as a review, because I can normally overlook a few typos. However, the typos in this book make for an almost impossible read. I can't believe I paid money for it.

    Book Description

If the burlesque stripper, with her bawdy spirit and unruly insubordination, has emerged for many as a new ‘empowering’ model for the sexually aware woman, then she also strikes horror in the heard of second wave feminism. Embodied by high profile artists such as Dita von Teese and Catherine d’Lish, the explosive revival of striptease, burlesque and overt female sexual performance has proved no less alluring to a new generation women artists familiar with the provocative work of 70’s performance artists such as Hannah Wikle and Carolee Schneeman. Eloquent on ‘prettiness’ and power, desire and ‘knowingness’, money, sex and class, and with an extensive knowledge of burlesque’s rich tradition, Wilson raises long overdue questions about women’s erotic expression within a ‘postfeminist’ condition. The ‘new burlesque’ demands about all a response—this fresh, brazen, provocative book at last provides it.

Although I am a Noel Hynd fan, but not a baseball fan, I loved this book nevertheless. Hynd is such an excellent story teller, I read this book in one weekend not because I was interested in the subject matter, but because I found myself immersed in the story itself. Hynd has a way of doing that with his readers. The history was interesting, and I learned quite a bit about baseball and vaudeville. But the best part was the romance surrounding the main characters, and Hynd related this true tale with compassion and sympathy.
