Customer Reviews:
Okay Read.......2007-08-14
I didn't care for either character.
Thayer, thought himself ugly and red. (that got old real quick, let me tell you).
Gytha was beautiful and blonde.
Thayer always thought Gytha would cheat on him (that got even older...quicker).
These two wore me flat out!
Howell at her best..........2007-06-18
This story quickly became one of my favorites by Hannah Howell. The hero is loveable, kind, and in need of some TLC. The heroine is realistic and her motivations are clear. Howell's twist on the much-told story makes it seem fresh and new. Super read. A keeper.
Not her best.......2007-05-22
I love romance novels and read on average about one or two a week. Hannah Howell is one of my favorite authors, and I liked the main characters. Thayer was a nice change from the stero typical romance hero. My disappointment came from the frequent switching POV. Gytha held on to a grudge based on a facial expression, which was weak for any plot. I got the impression that Hannah didn't write it. The ideas were much like hers but the prose was not up to her usual standard. NH
didn't care for it.......2007-05-10
This is not Howell's best work, I would borrow it or get it used. To be honest it was a waste of a yummy yummy cover. That was basically the best part of the book.
My biggest issue with this book is how stupid the hero is. I found that extremely unattractive and it had nothing to do with how he was described `cause FYI I love red heads. The first misunderstanding between Gytha & Thayer was worse than what a normal human being could just overlook, especially in a chapter or two. Now I realize I can be sensitive about certain things so maybe everyone would not agree with me. As you can see by the other reviews, some really liked this book.
It's a taste thing and only my opinion, so no offense. Without telling what happened I would like to point out that this man is a warrior. A knight. He is a trained solider, worked as a solider for hire. They call him the Red Devil. THE RED DEVIL. Been in a few battles y'all is what I'm saying. She's telling us "shock" would have kept him still? Yeah maybe for like 3 seconds. And just because of some tramp from the past hurt his little feelings? Give me a break. What a candy a**. And by the way, just because you are not the most beautiful person in the world and have low self-esteem is not an excuse for being a moron. And I never thought he accepted himself. It was all about how she didn't mind him being "ugly" even though she was unbelievably beautiful.
Nothing wrong with having an issue or two about they way you look... this I understand. And I think we all like to see character growth in our heroes and heroines but at what point do you say, wow will you ever learn? Isn't the basic premise behind Beauty and the Beast stories about inner beauty and self-worth blah blah blah? Did I watch the wrong Disney movie?
Gytha's reaction was dead on yet when it was time for Thayer to pay pay pay and suffer suffer suffer, she felt guilty because she thought she was being tricky or manipulative?!!? And on top of it Gytha never saw the groveling the situation called for. And it called for GROVELING! She lets him off the hook when nothing has really been settled. And that was typical of the entire book, he would do something really dumb and it was a huge deal, she would be furious and hurt but then not a lot would come out of it. He would say in his head how horrible he felt but that she just didn't understand.
I never was convinced that he really got it regardless of the last 3 pages of the book. Some of Howell's books are good; she is someone I like to read. Her Highlander books are light, entertaining, and perfect for escapism. I own every single one of them. Yet there are a few of her books that are so irritating (Wild Roses is another waste of good paper) because the men are weak, stupid, or selfish and there is little to sympathize with or make you want to root for them. I could barely make myself care if they ended up happy ever after or not and had to force myself to finish the book even when I had like 2 or 3 chapters to go. This is not the worse book I've read, that dubious honor goes to Lynn Kurland's Another Chance to Dream, but now I'm hesitant to read her other books.
Wow, what a rant. Okay maybe I take romance books a little too seriously but when I'm spending my time and my money, I have high expectations.
A very sweet and romantic book.......2007-04-09
Loved this book. It has been a while since I have come across a book that was such a wonderful storyline. No need to recap the book as other reviewers have taken care of that. There was a wonderful mutual respect and appreciation of the two lead characters and a twist at the end. Thanks Hannah Howell for a nice read that will stay on my keeper shelf.

This much-loved retelling of the classic French tale Beauty and the Beast elicits the familiar magical charm, but is more believable and complex than the traditional story. In this version, Beauty is not as beautiful as her older sisters, who are both lovely and kind. Here, in fact, Beauty has no confidence in her appearance but takes pride in her own intelligence, her love of learning and books, and her talent in riding. She is the most competent of the three sisters, which proves essential when they are forced to retire to the country because of their father's financial ruin.
The plot follows that of the renowned legend: Beauty selflessly agrees to inhabit the Beast's castle to spare her father's life. Beauty's gradual acceptance of the Beast and the couple's deepening trust and affection are amplified in novel form. Robin McKinley's writing has the flavor of another century, and Beauty heightens the authenticity as a reliable and competent narrator.
This was McKinley's first book, written almost 20 years ago. Since that time she has been awarded the Newbery Medal for The Hero and the Crown and has delighted her fans with another retelling of the Beauty and the Beast fable, Rose Daughter. Still, McKinley's first novel has a special place in the hearts of her devoted readers, many of whom attest to relishing Beauty time and again. (Ages 11 to Adult)
Book Description
A strange imprisonment
Beauty has never liked her nickname. She is thin and awkward; it is her two sisters who are the beautiful ones. But what she lacks in looks, she can perhaps make up for in courage.
When her father comes home with the tale of an enchanted castle in the forest and the terrible promise he had to make to the Beast who lives there, Beauty knows she must go to the castle, a prisoner of her own free will. Her father protests that he will not let her go, but she answers, "Cannot a Beast be tamed?"
Robin McKinley's beloved telling illuminates the unusual love story of a most unlikely couple: Beauty and the Beast.
Customer Reviews:
The perfect title.......2007-09-27
This book has been given the perfect title. It is charming, beautiful, and a breeze to read. If ever you have loved the tale of Beauty and her Beast, then you should pick up this book as fast as you can. It's not just the familar story; there are new twists, new faces, and new names. It is a way to reach in and find your true beauty, even if it had already been there to begin with.
I would recomend this book to anyone.
Extremely overrated.......2007-09-09
I am surprised that the book got such great reviews, because I found the writing to be very weak. The story was boring, the characters were unbelievable and unlikable, and in the end I didn't see any point. The climax was basically Beauty getting lost in the woods on her way back to the Beast!
I recommend that you read The Fire Rose by Mercedes Lackey. That retelling of Beauty and the Beast surpasses this one by far.
first fairy tale retelling I've read.......2007-07-11
I read this in college, and was blown away by how rich and robust the author made this story. Beauty's real name is Honour, and she got the nickname Beauty because she hated her name. She's a well-rounded character that I instantly related to. It opened my eyes to the possibility that there's more to a story than what the tradional fairy tales tell. I went on a search for other retellings, but found none as well done as this one. I loved it.
MIGHT Have Been Wonderful, Except..........2007-06-05
BEAUTY is an elegant, simplistic retelling of this favorite fairy tale of McKinley's, and it might have impressed me significantly more if I had not read ROSE DAUGHTER first. I find ROSE DAUGHTER to be the far superior rendition of this classic---less elementary, definitely more mature! I have never understood this fairy tale which makes a crystal-clear statement about learning to appreciate the depth of a person's character rather than just his/her pretty face, then ends with the pretty girl getting the pretty boy anyway...sort of a retraction of the theme, in my view. In this BEAUTY, our heroine isn't "storybook pretty", or at least we are led to believe this: that her beauty grows with maturity & from her attachment to her Beast---but his eventual physical "beauty" comes from nothing more than the demise of the evil spell placed upon him. How conveniently lucky for them! McKinley doesn't mess with the classic ending too broadly in BEAUTY---to me, not broadly enough at all.
In ROSE DAUGHTER, our also-plain-but-growing-into-beauty heroine is given a choice which she has to make not only for HERSELF, but for her Beast as well. Her choice--take the handsome prince or stick with the Beast forever (tho you still get his brilliance, his intellect, and his kind heart either way)--then hinges not only on what SHE may prefer, but what she believes her beloved Beast may prefer for himself, clearly a more grown-up proposition. This adds back the marrow stripped gracelessly by the shiny ending of the original fairy tale, and BEAUTY as well.
I like to think that as Robin herself grew more comfortable over the years with her evocative story of Beauty, she envisioned the more mature Beauty/Beast relationship and ending presented in ROSE DAUGHTER, and thus created her second version, and second vision. BEAUTY is well worth reading, is written sumtuously and evocatively, and expands on a great classic tale. But read BOTH books if you can!
Another reason to like retellings!.......2007-03-09
This was a great book; I literally couldn't put it down! Not at all like the Disney version, yet it still had the same elements in it of the original story. And there's a few interesting plot twists to boot! Don't miss this one!

Book Description
Sugar and spice and all that's nice? Not quite. It's tough to be a girl. Girls are mean to each other. Most girls will admit that they have been a victim of a mean girl. In fact, many will say that all girls are basically mean. Whether they're arguing about a boy, teasing a girl because of how she looks, or making up rumors to torment others, girls can be just plain ruthless. This one-of-a-kind book can help end the cycle of meanness. Mean Girls is a call to spiritual strength. A call to stand firm. It calls girls to face the beasts in their lives head on. In short, it's the answer girls need for the problem they never thought could go away.

It has change my life!!!!.......2006-07-18
I think I came across this book because GOd knew I needed to read this amazing book..All of my life ive struggle with mean girls till this day I still do..Ive read this book and I couldnt put it down..yes it has a lot of repitions but its only to remind us whats important to keep in mind..Im really glad I came across this book..I just wish I could have read it when I was younger..I highly recommend it!!
Good Book but a lot of repitition.......2006-01-10
Mean Girls by DiMarco has some great points to offer and she helps spell out what different kinds of mean look like. Unfortunately, she repeats a lot of the same information in different formats and the book becomes redundant. I have been using this book for a junior high small group and it became difficult to really get into any meat after the first 3-4 weeks. For an individual girl, I think it can be helpful to label the subtle ways girls can be mean and ways they can move beyond mean to live a life committed to God first. I appreciate the way she calls it what it is and challenges teens to raise the bar in how they are living. I think watching the movie, Mean Girls, adds more to the book, even though the two are unrelated. Overall, it is a decent book.
telling it like it is.......2005-05-14
This book is what will heal those stupid teenage girls or young women that are in their 20's ruthless and become boring againg christians. These days women love to get the last word in every argument they are the reason why a more boys are shy around cause they make them feel un-welcome and men don't deserve that. Hayley is a genious.
BUY IT ... READ IT ... ENJOY IT.......2005-05-03
I thought it was really interesting to read about why girls act mean and what you can do against it. What Hayley DiMarco writes about that topic is REALLY true and so I recommend the book to everyone who is interested in "mean girls" and their behaviour and wants to know why it's "so NOT easy to be a female".
If you want to know more about "mean girls" watch the movie "MEAN GIRLS - watch your back" and let me tell you: this is not just another teen movie!

Beauty Is In The Eye Of The Beholder.......2007-06-22
This story is a must read for all. It proves that beauty is only skin deep and beauty and love does tame the most savage beast. I read this book in one afternoon because I couldn't put it down. Great love story with a lot of intrigue to boot. A must read for all!
Awesome Modern Day Fairy Tale.......2007-05-28
This is the first novel I've read by Mrs. King-Bey and I must admit when I first read the books description, I thought who wants to read about a guy who suffers with a bipolar disorder and a woman that's been horribly disfigured, however, I must also admit I am definitely impressed, this novel was beautifully written. In BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, Deatri King-Bey brings to light a story about finding the true beauty within. This novel was so realistic and thought provoking. It had me crying and LOL at some of Bruce and Nefertiti's antics. The emotion and love that was portrayed throughout this novel between Bruce and Nefertiti was just overwhelming. Despite the 'flaws' Bruce and Nefertiti suffered, be it physical or emotional, they were able to see pass all that and open their hearts to one another to a deep and unconditional love. This novel raised awareness about the bipolar disorder, it had mystery, action, humor and definitely some HOT and steamy love scenes. A real page turner that I couldn't put down until I was finished. Definitely a novel for the hopeless romantic and those that believe in fairy tales. Thanks for a real eye-opener, Mrs. King-Bey!
My Favorite Fairytale!.......2007-05-06
I just bought this book on Tuesday and I finished it in 3 days! Nefertiti was brutally attacked and left with scars on the outside and the inside. Bruce was abandoned by his mother who called him a "devil child". Because of his "blue moods", people who knew him called him a beast. Bruce loves his beauty unconditionally and Nefertiti loves Bruce despite his problems with controlling his rage. This story was interesting because these characters had to deal with mental illness and traumatic stress.....but that just made it more interesting!!! I couldn't put down.
Kudos to the author on a book well written...
LOVE IS UNCONDITONAL.......2007-05-04
MUCH WORDS DOES NOT NEED TO BE USED TO DESCRIBE HOW GREAT BEAUTY AND THE BEAST WAS. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK. IT'S A MUST READ
Not Your Classic Cast.......2007-02-21
In Deatri King-Bey's, Beauty and the Beast, we meet Bruce Maxwell and his childhood friend, Nerfertiti. Bruce suffers from bipolar disorder. Sometimes he is able to function in the world and sometimes he is not. Nefertiti, once a lively, free-spirit, becomes a recluse after a brutal attack that leaves her scarred for life. When Bruce's aunt brings Nerfertiti to Maxwell Manor to recuperate, Bruce embarks on a mission to make the only woman he has ever loved his wife. Self-doubt and fits of rage reign as Nerfertiti learns self-acceptance and Bruce tries to control the rage that presses him to seek revenge against Nerfertiti's attackers.
In this classic tale of beauty and the beast, the reader meets two not so classic characters. Although Bruce and Nefertiti are seriously flawed, their acceptance of each other is a life's lesson in love. Ms. King-Bey weaves a wonderful tale of unconditional love and forces the reader to remember that beauty is not skin deep but contained deep within the skin.
If you are a romance fan, Beauty and the Beast will surely not disappoint.

Book Description
Expertly told, these childhood favorites open up the world of fairy tales to children who can now see themselves reflected in the 'mirror mirrors' in their books! With beautiful full-color illustrations on every spread, these tales will delight readers everywhere, and ever after.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent...with one warning.......2007-07-28
I bought all of the JATS fairy tales for my girls. It is great to have books that feature black girls but are not ABOUT being black. Our kids want some fantasy too. The one problem I have is the a few of the JATS books (including this one) feature villians that may be too threatening for very young kids (mine are 2 & 4). In this book, the beast threatens Beauty's father by saying that he will die by by the end of the day for stealing roses. There are at least two others that use an explicit threat of death against the hero or heroine. It's just not a topic I want to discuss with my kids because the older one if afraid of it already. Just a warning for parents who have not really discussed death with their kids.
Job Well Done!.......2007-02-14
I recommend this book to every little girl, and not just African American little girls. We should have more stories to show another images for our young ones. (Thumbs UP)!!!!

Customer Reviews:
Empowering.......2007-06-24
A very important book that should be mandatory reading for all educators, especially in middle schools, high schools, and colleges. Abuse and male privilege are far too common and even accepted by so many. Saving Beauty from the Beast is very readable and compelling. All school counselors should read this book. As a former victim of domestic violence I know what an uphill battle it can be as the victim is often blamed by the police and clergy. This book is a ray of light in a dark tunnel. I am grateful to its authors.
This book may save your daughter's life.......2007-03-07
If you even SUSPECT that your child may be in an unhealthy relationship, please read this book! It contains so many insights that would have helped keep my daughter safe had I known. Out of ignorance we let her continue a breaking up and 'getting back together' cycle with a young man who we now know has been abusing her for almost a year. Fortunately, some friends convinced her to tell us, so we can help her get out safely, and make sure he gets the help he needs so that he doesn't do this to someone else.
Besides the many chapters for parents of abused girls, there is a chapter for parents of suspected abusers, and one for youth who suspect a friend is being abused. I feel so guilty that this has happened to my daughter, and the book addresses that as well. It also gives very practical information about how to set up safety plans, minimize the chances of his finding her new phone number, etc.
Dating abuse is so much more common than it used to be. This book is an excellent tool to help us protect our children. Every parent should know about the 'power and control spiral', the cycle of abuse, and the warning signs of potential abusers and abusive relationships, and educate their children about them as well.
Stop the abuse---read this book.......2004-10-26
In a 2003 "Montel Williams" show on dating violence, Vicki Crompton, co-author of Saving Beauty From The Beast, did more than plug her book, co-written with Ellen Zelda Kessner; she told the highly personal story of her daughter Jenny's murder at the hands of boyfriend Mark Smith, and offered advice to young women and parents torn apart by callous teenage boys, adolescent angst, parent-daughter conflicts, and a culture that, as the book points out, romanticizes forbidden love, taking what you want at any cost, love that hurts, and having a boyfriend.
Crompton, hand-in-hand with parenting author Kessner, has turned her daughter's shattering, unthinkable death into a brilliant, readable book that draws on real teenagers and their parents from all backgrounds, speaking in clear, intelligent voices, articulating the myriad pressures young women today face when involved in a love that hurts. Crompton and Kressner do not make light of peer pressure, or fail to note that the very rich and the very poor of today's youth are the most at risk to become abusers, or shrink from advising parents to "back off" and accept the relationship. The personal safety plan for daughters in abusive relationships, the safety plan for daughters who have left the relationship, the ingenious suggestion of a "code word" signaling danger, are useful tools. The coda of Crompton confronting Mark Smith in prison serves as a poignant reminder and incentive for all parents of teenage girls to read and share this book with their "Beautys."
Very helpful book. Wish we bought it sooner........2003-08-01
I recently bought several books on abusive relationships.
My husband (a very picky reader) has read many passages out loud to me from this one.
It is filled with many examples of abusive relationships that are unbelievably similar to what we have seen. We almost feel as if the authors know the young man we are concerned about.
The book is clearly written, provides good details and ideas on how to cope.
Buy this book before your daughter gets involved with an abuser, or at least at the first signs of an abusive relationship. You want to know, as early as possible, what can be going on.
The book is worth many times what it costs..
a very good, informative book.......2003-06-18
This book is very well written and full of information regarding teen dating abuse. Crompton details the experiences of several teenagers who went through abuse (verbal, emotional, and physical) while providing a firsthand account of her daughter's difficult struggle. While Crompton did provide valuable information concerning identifying and quelling one's own daughter's entrance into an abusive relationship, I wish she had detailed more on how to PREVENT one's daughter from entering an unhealthy relationship (early child rearing, parental interaction, etc.)

Enchanted.......2002-09-13
I have 5 volumes of the HOW TO DRAW series. This one is a good reference book if you want to try your hand at drawing. Beginners will find it a challenge to "copy" a given picture following the step by step instructions. Artists with some experience will find the hints and a glance at the techniques used helpful. I'll give it 4 stars instead of 5 because it's made a bit soulless, I'd have expected more heart and soul to a booklet like that but I guess that's not possible in a huge company.

not what i wanted!.......2007-06-17
ok, so i was looking for a vocal book that had piano and vocal lines that i could use for my auditions. instead it is an "easy piano" book and i really can't use it for auditions or for concert because there isn't enough accompaniment to back me up when i sing. unfortuanatly, amazon doesn't state that it is an easy piano book. just consider what you are buying it for and remember you can't really use it foir concerts or auditions or performances.
Great Book, Poor Shipping.......2006-11-10
I needed this book to help put on part of a school production. I paid extra to have it delivered by a certain date because I needed the book by 9pm that evening. The delivery service did not get it to my door until after 6pm. In addition, the box was in very bad shape: there was a hole in the top of the box and the top was squashed in. Thankfully, the book was only a little bent up and still usable because it was in the very bottom of the box. I was satisfied with the product, but not the shipping.
The Book itself was very helpful. The guitar chords were really useful and worth the extra price. The keys in the songs are not the same as the Disney movie, so be careful.
Beauty and the Beast.......2005-10-03
Son loves playing this and our family loves hearing him. Thank you.
Awesome Musical, Beautiful Music!.......2005-04-29
I love this music book. I received it as a gift years ago and the pages are falling out of the binding because I've played it on the piano so often! I fell in love with the show when it first came to town and I was so excited to see that the music in the book is exactly the same as on the soundtrack!
The piano music is challenging for those who want to play the original score. My favorites are "If I can't love her" and "The Transformation/Beauty and the Beast Reprise." I'm such a romantic and when I play the Transformation, I get goosebumps picturing Belle and the Beast coming together again! Also, I love the "Something There" song. That's probably my favorite!
The vocal selection is great too. This is a great buy if you love musicals and love Beauty and the Beast!
Some of the Most Beautiful Songs.......2004-06-30
I first had purchased the soundtrack to this musical and immeadiately fell in love with the music. All of the songs from the soundtrack are included. I think that this is a wonderful collection of beautiful songs. It contains all of the classic disney songs plus more songs original to the musical. Some include: Human Again, No Matter What, Me, Home, and many more! I definately suggest this music book!

A GREAT book!.......1999-05-30
This book was a real treat going through. Loaded with photographs, it tells the story as a script, shows the design of the characters, and then shows the special effects, sets, and other cool stuff. It's a great soveneir of the musical, and if you haven't it's a great book to read to experience the musical if you can't experience it on Broadway
This book is wondefully elaborate and ornate........1998-09-05
This book is excellent. It is filled with gorgeous pictures from the Broadway musical. It also contains the complete lyrics and a story line of how the actual musical was produced. This is a definite for any musical theatre fan!
