Book Description

"George," he said, "I don't know if you'd be interested, but there's a chap who's come in with a tape of a group he runs. They haven't got a recording contract, and I wonder if you'd like to see him and listen to what he's got?""Certainly," I said, "I'm willing to listen to anything. Ask him to come and see me." "O.K., I will. His name's Brian Epstein...."All You Need Is Ears is the story of George Martin, the man who spotted the Beatles' talent, who recorded and produced them from the start, and who brought their musical ideas to life. In this witty and charming autobiography, he describes exactly what it was like to work in the studio with the Beatles--from the first audition (and his decision to scrap Pete Best on drums) to the wild experimentation of Sgt. Pepper (complete with sound effects, animal noises and full orchestras in evening dress at the direct request of Paul McCartney). This is a singular look at the most important musical group of all time, and how they made the music that changed the world: No other book can provide George Martin's inside look at their creative process, at the play of genius and practical improvisation that gave them their sound; it is an indispensable read for Beatle lovers and anyone interested in the music world.

4 out of 5 stars Posted Bio.......2007-04-04

Just to point out --

The biography posted is for George Martin, the sci-fi writer,
who isn't the same person (as far as I know!) as the Beatles'
producer. FYI.

3 out of 5 stars A good book that should have been great.......2007-03-05

George Martin was the 5th Beatle. He gave them their first break after they had been turned down by all the labels. Without the break he gave them, Martin muses that the Beatles may have just given it up and gone their separate ways. Apparently George Martin was the only one around that was willing to take a chance on these scruffs from Liverpool that would chane the world.

It seems that Paul was the one Beatle that could have made it on his own, but if not as on of The Beatles, then as what? Could he have been a backup for Tony Sheridan, or a bass player for Little Richard? Thankfully, we will never know. Would the other Beatles have likely gotten working class jobs, and/or just self-destructed? As always, the whole was greater than the sum of its parts.

It is hard to imagine a world without the Beatles, but that just underscores the importance of George Martin in giving them their lucky break. George Martin played all positions with the Beatles, except for vocalist. He produced, directed, arranged, and even played piano and harpsichord on many records. He brought that classical influence of strings and horns into the Beatles music, starting with Yesterday. Any die-hard fan will want to read this book, however, beware: it is diluted a bit with stories about other recording artists that have little relation to the reason why I bought the book in the first place, i.e., The Beatles. Nevertheless, it does have a few anecdotes that have not been seen elsewhere, so yes, it is worth buying and reading. You can always skip the parts that you don't care about.

George Martin is very informative on the evolution of multitrack recording technology, so that should be of interest to anybody that wonders how they got all those "layer cakes" out of the primitive equipment of the day.

I enjoyed the book immensely, but I think George Martin could have done better given his intimate knowledge of one of the greatest cultural phenomena of all time. Sometimes he seems a little aloof in the book, as if he hardly cares, but it is probably just old-school English understatement at its best, or maybe a futile attempt to downplay that he is probably their biggest fan, if not one of their oldest.

On a side note, it is too bad that George Martin was never rewarded financially (at least up to 1979 when this book was published) on a level that would have been commensurate with the important role he played in not only discovering, but also developing the greatest band of all time. As always, the Beatles come off as cheap, uncharitable and self-indulgent on this score. As the book explains, Martin was offered some royalties under the table, (as a kickback from an unscrupulous publisher) but he never compromised his ethics. Eventually I'm sure he made a nice living through his long association with the Fab 4, but not what one might expect, according to the book, at least up to 1979. A lot has happened in the financial world of The Beatles since this book was written, including the huge Vegas production of Love, in which Martin played an integral role along with his son, Giles. It's nice to see a music producer that is more driven by quality and innovation than the lowest common demoniators. I wish we had more like him.

My rating says 3 stars, but that was a mistake. I really gave it a 4.

4 out of 5 stars Beatles.......2007-01-18

A must read for anyone involved in the making of music as it pertains to production and recording. It however exhibits George Martins conservative nature and is someone bias from his perspective. A much superior book is Here,There, and Everywhere by Geoff Emerick. It is the same subject matter but much more detailed and objective.

4 out of 5 stars Okay but not all that I wanted.......2007-01-05

I wish there were more technical specifics in the descriptions of various sessions. Sir George gets you into Abbey Road studio #2 and lets you know about his experiences with various artists.

5 out of 5 stars George Martin REVEALED!.......2006-09-03

This is a truly amazing book. I had just finished reading "Here, There and Everywhere" by Geoff Emerick (the Beatles recording engineer) and decided I wanted to know more about George Martin, their producer. It was a great decision because the introspect gained from reading both of these books together tells a big picture that I before could only guess at.

George's personality really comes out in this book and it makes it far easier to understand what went on during the Beatles many many recording sessions. It has been said that the producer is a major contributer to the outcome of any project and this book definately confirms and educates about that process.

It is an easy read and the edition that I purchased has fairly decent sized type and makes it easy on the eyes. It is a paperback and tucks easily into your daybag or briefcase for those times when you can read a few minutes - but if you are like I am - you may devour the whole thing in one seating!

The early life of George Martin is also detailed in this book with it's different perspective of growing up in Britain. I had no idea that George Martin was in pop music groups as he was growing up and that came as a terrific surprise. I might have known, though.

The classical side of George Martin comes out strong also. This came into very significant play as he produced the Beatles.

Great book. Don't hesitate to buy this!

2 out of 5 stars Not Worth the Money.......2006-02-25

This book was ok but it contain very little useful information. I wouldn't suggest you get your hopes up when buying this book. The author does not discuss any physical problems, only phobias & panic. I expected to find information like pain in your ears, or physical symptoms of some kind. NADA, nothing. He suggests OTC meds but doesn't explain what to take & when or how. I know you need a Dr's advice but anyone with anxiety or panic knows that a DR is not going to listen to other suggestions for anxiety treatment.

5 out of 5 stars The most important book on phobias and their treatment........2000-10-20

A lot of people suffer -- and I do mean suffer -- from one or more phobias, and a lot of techniques are offered by various therapists to treat phobias. Unfortunately, while some of these treatments may reduce phobic symptoms somewhat, relatively few phobics are actually cured. In this excellent book, Dr. Harold Levinson explains the reasons for this situation. One is that there are three different types of phobias, a fact not generally recognized. About 5% or so of phobias are caused primarily by a neurotic condition of some sort. These phobias often respond to conventional psychotherapy whereas most phobias do not. Another 5% or so of phobias are caused by a severe trauma, such as being bitten by a dog or being in a plane that almost crashes. These phobias are often helped by desensitization therapy. But if phobias that are caused primarily by neurosis or trauma account for only about 10% of all phobias, what is the primary cause of the other 90%? Dr. Levinson's brilliant discovery is that the root cause of most phobias is a disorder of the cerebellar-vestibular sustem, called in lay terminology "the inner ear." Dr. Levinson also found that inner ear disorders are the primary cause of dyslexia and that there is a very high correlation between dyslexia and phobias. About 90% of people who are phobic or dyslexic are both phobic and dylexic. Fortunately, Dr. Levinson has found that about 80% of cases of both phobias and dyslexia respond to at least one of the inner ear medications currently available, including dramamine, scopolamine, and Benadryl. Inner ear disorders are relatively easy for trained audiologists to detect and verify by the battery of tests available to them, but they seldom are detected by routine examinations made by general practitioners or even ear, nose, and throat specialists. If you suffer from phobias and/or dyslexia -- as I do -- please read this book with an open mind. It may literally change your life for the better. In my case, thorough audiological testing -- as described in this book -- revealed that I do indeed have an inner ear disorder which was not detected by routine examinations. Based on this finding, my physician tried the inner ear medications listed by Dr. Levinson and found one that has given me significant relief. Therefore, I am recommending this book from personal experience.

5 out of 5 stars Phobia Free A Medical Breakthrough linking 90% Of All Phobia.......2000-02-15

I Have been phobic for the last five years, i've been hospitalised and housebound. My phobias started on a day trip in the country with what I know now as a panic attack,it was the most frightening exprience of my life as I thought I was going mad and or had a brain tumour. After psychiatry, hypnotherapy, counciling and reiki healing. After numerous amounts of medication and none to my relief,my phobias incresed and I was desperate I could see no way out of this living nightmare. I got the book and finished it in an evening it was brilliant I'am now on the medication 3 weeks and everyday I lose a phobia its a miracle and I would just like to thank Dr Harold Levinson for giving me what i can only say is my life back--

5 out of 5 stars A must read for those suffering from OCD and Phobias.......1998-07-16

This is beneficial information for those suffering from OCD. Dr. Levinson's theory has led to my complete recovery. His theory attributes the disorder to a "medical" condition of the inner-ear called a cerebellar-vestibular dysfunction and is easily treated and corrected with a combination of antihistamines, antimotion-sickness, and antianxiety medications that he prescribes. Soon after starting the medication, the disorder was gone. Calmness and total control were shortly established. Prior to this were many months of unsuccessful behavioral therapy treatment with no relief occuring. Dr. Levinson's treatment doesn't just give some relief from OCD, it rids it! His book "Phobia Free" is extremely helpful and describes in depth how the cv-dysfunction is related to all anxiety. It describes why obsessive thoughts occur and how they are thoughts that are just not being properly filtered. The title of this book, "Phobia Free," is truly ! ! a perfect description of how an OCD sufferer feels after being treated by Dr. Levinson for this "medical" condition called the cv-dysfunction.

      Book Description

The room darkens and grows hushed, all eyes to the front as the screen comes to life. Eagerly the audience starts to thumb the pages of their handouts, following along breathlessly as the slides go by one after the other... We're not sure what the expected outcome was when PowerPoint first emerged as the industry standard model of presentation, but reality has shown few positive results. Research reveals that there is much about this format that audiences positively dislike, and that the old school rules of classical rhetoric are still as effective as they ever were for maximizing impact. Renowned communications researcher, consultant, and speech coach Max Atkinson presents these findings and more in a groundbreaking and refreshing approach that highlights the secrets of successful communication, and shows how anyone can put these into practice and become an effective speaker or presenter. Topics Include: BL How to win and hold the attention of audiences; BL Using visual aids and PowerPoint more effectively; BL Getting your message across and winning applause; BL Inspiring audiences; BL How to prepare quickly; BL Fact and fiction about body language and non-verbal communication.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for writing a speech.......2007-06-14

As an executive speech writer and coach, I've read many fine books on public speaking. This book is one of the best I've seen about the art of crafting a compelling speech.

I especially enjoyed the three chapters of the first section. They examine how giving a speech is like and unlike holding a conversation. And they suggest ways for making a speech more conversational. You've probably heard much of the advice before - make the audience part of your speech, establish eye contact, pause, avoid being overly formal or using words that are rarely heard in everyday conversation, etc. - but now you'll understand why.

I liked the chapter titled "The Persuasive Power of Words." It examines four rhetorical techniques that make audiences pay attention to and remember what you say:
      1. CONTRASTS, which include contradictions ("not this but that"), comparisons ("more this than that"), opposites ("black or white"), and phrase reversals
      2. PUZZLES (assertions that briefly confuse the audience, priming them for your solution) and QUESTIONS
      3. LISTS OF THREE
      4. A COMBINATION OF THE OTHER THREE TECHNIQUES

And I found a lot to think about in the chapter, "Painting Words with Pictures." It begins, "A picture may sometimes tell a thousand words, but words can just as easily be used to create a thousand images." It then examines the different ways of creating images in the minds of your audience: similes, metaphors, analogies, anecdotes, and quotations.

I found the other chapters on visual aids (including PowerPoint) and body language less insightful, although I agree with almost everything Atkinson writes in them. (Beware: if you're wedded to PowerPoint or if you believe that how you speak is more important than what you say, you're going to be challenged - rightly, I think - by what he writes.)

Each chapter is filled with examples and stories (mostly from politics) and ends with a one- or two-page summary. Each section concludes with exercises to help you apply what you've read.

The book's subtitle, "All You Need to Know about Making Speeches," is a bit misleading. The book is more about writing a speech than delivering one. And while it gives great advice about using words, phrases, and images to strengthen a speech's impact, it goes into considerably less detail about constructing a speech.

Atkinson has experience in academia and as a consultant for politicians and corporations. His book is both intellectually stimulating and practical.

You may not like this book if you're looking for a beginner's guide to public speaking. But if you want to make your speeches more engaging and memorable, you'll profit from this book.

It's one of the few books I go back to again and again as I'm writing speeches for my clients. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Lend Me Your Ears: All You Need to Know About Making Speeches And Presentations.......2005-11-24

"Without doubt this is the best ever "how to" book on speeches and presentations, no matter what the topic - business, social, political, or technical.

As a CEO I have sat through so many turn-off presentations by people I know to be literate and interesting. This book demonstrates how unnecessary this is and that one does not have to be a "born speaker" to make lively, interesting, really effective presentations.

It is completely practical in identifying the tried and tested techniques which have served the great communicators down the ages. It is also first class on how to use (but not over use) modern computer aids to great effect.

No wonder speechwriters to Presidents Reagan and Clinton say the author Professor Max Atkinson is the speechwriters Guru."

          5 out of 5 stars A book worth having.......2006-05-12

The begining of the book is slow with respect to liking it(for example inversions are presented and then competely forgotten throughout, wondering why they were presented to begin with), but the value of the book begins to appear as one continues, with effort I must addmit,to the following chapters. It is a superb book and I feel obligated to congratulate the author.Missing from the book is the subject of chord connections in conjunction with inversions and the presentation of some examples so we don't forget that we are dealing on matters of music!

          2 out of 5 stars Ad hoc.......2005-11-12

A good primer on the chord notation one is apt to encounter in fake books and jazz charts, but it falls far short when it comes to common-practice harmonic theory. Covers all manner of esoterica like added 9ths and 13ths and diminished and augmented variations, but the material on how chords function in relation to one another is sketchy and unconvincing to this university music department graduate. Better to stick with Piston.

          3 out of 5 stars ok.......2004-02-23

this book was good, but often confusing. it is definatly not for someone who doesn't already know music.

3 out of 5 stars Exactly as advertised........2001-07-14

This book is hard core music theroy. From chord basics to harmony. It is presented as a series of lessons and studies in a work book format. OOOO Kayyy... I don't want to bust on this book because it is a very good and worth while educational tool. But it really should be gone over with a music teacher. As a source book and educational referance for guitarest it lacks. In fact if you are not a keyboardest this book is a bit difficult digest. I did get some useful information on harmony and was able to make the information bend to my will, but the extraction process was long and painful. Overall, yes it's a good book and will enrich you as a musician. I doubt if any one in the mosh pit will notice.

5 out of 5 stars The Penatonic scale of blues rules.......2001-02-04

this book teaches the secondary dominant (very rare) and how it applies to tradional blues. A true milestone in music theory composition. I particularly liked the bues topics. Excellent! My professor at cal poly treats this book as the music bible. Totally CONTEMPORARY!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Kids Review by Matt.......2007-04-27

Jonah Morrison is a boy that moved to a new school. He moved to Connecticut from New York. The father he ever knew left before he moved. Jonah got teased in school alot. He had no friends except, his new friend Blister. Jonah is eleven years old. His dream was to have a t.v show. The show would be called "onah the Whale". He got the name beacause a mean little boy wrote on the blackboard "Jonah the Whale." Will he ever get the show? You will never know if you don't read the book. Jonah lied to get friends. I would recommend this book to someone that would follow their dreams.

            2 out of 5 stars Boring Book!.......2007-04-26

Yang the Youngest was an OK book.It was sort of boring and didn't grab my attention. In the beginning, there was nothing really happening.I only found out that a boy named Yintao was tone deaf and his parents made him play the violin. Since all his siblings played their instruments very well, he was expecteed to also
In the middle of the book, Yingtao found out he had to play in a concert with his siblings. He and his friend Matthew make a plan that Matthew will play his violin insted of Yingtao. Matthew would be behind a screen and Yingtao would "bow synk". This part was a little better.
At the end, Yingtao's and Matthew's plan is underway, and it didn't work out so well. This book is boring.I would recomend this book to people who like music.

4 out of 5 stars Yang Has Other Abilities.......2006-07-24

Yang the Youngest and His Terrible Ear is a great book for teaching cultural diversity, acceptance, family values, and commitment. The novel is geared for students in grades third through fifth. I enjoyed how the plot unfolds as each character is developed. I appreciated the author's use of weaving American and Chinese customs into the story. Readers will sympathize with Yang as he tries to please his father through deception. I enjoyed the book.

            5 out of 5 stars A Good Story.......2006-05-03

This book was well written and tells of an all too familiar story of a child wanting to do one thing and his parents wanting him to to another. It isn't a scary book. Hey they shouldn't ALL be scary. It is an easy read and highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Not my type of book.......2005-11-29

Yang the Youngest is a boy who wants to play baseball, but his parents want him to work on his violin playing. The only problem is that Yang has a terrible ear and isn't good at music. Yang's friend Mathew wants to play violin, but his parents want him to play baseball. I didn't like the book because I like books with battles, nature and history in them. This book didn't have any of those.
