5 out of 5 stars Great Recipes.......2007-09-04

I have had this book for a while and must say it is excellant. I have found recipes for dishes that I couldn't find anywhere and I have over 1000 cookbooks of every kind just about out there. It is definitely a cook book I keep close at hand.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-08-23

I love the cookbook. I have a few of them, the dinners in here are great!!! Thank you

4 out of 5 stars very handy to have around the house.......2007-07-18

good service rec'd book in excellent condition and very fast!! Good recipes for the health conscious consumer who may be trying to lose weight too! I love the book! and so does my family!

3 out of 5 stars Portions are skimpy.......2007-05-19

The recipes in this cookbook are quite tasty, but the portions are skimpy!! There's no way I would be satisfied with one portion of these recipes.

If you get this cookbook, prepare to eat tiny portions of the meals you fix and a huge bowl of salad to stay within a reasonable amount of calories but also get full. And I am not a big eater - I usually eat about 350-400 calories for dinner, but I make my calories go far by preparing healthy food that is low-cal.

This cookbook is beautiful, but misleading once you realize how small the portions are. Bummer.

5 out of 5 stars Great cookbook for those that like to eat out!!.......2007-05-16

I love this cookbook. There are lots of delicious recipes, and they taste so great that even those who are not watching their weight will love them. There are lots of very different options, and none of the recipes I have made so far are too difficult or too time-consuming.

Marketing wiz Jay Abraham provides some powerful strategies for boosting your career or business in Getting Everything You Can Out of All You've Got. Abraham believes that anyone can advance in life by tapping into hidden assets and developing the right mindset. He writes, "You are surrounded by simple, obvious solutions that can dramatically increase your income, power, influence and success. The problem is, you just don't see them." Over the course of 21 chapters, he shows how to get ahead by treating bosses and clients as valued friends; find better and more exciting ways of doing things; develop "unique selling propositions"; persuade people to follow your lead; master the art of selling on the telephone; craft a formal referral system; sell on the Internet; and forge strong, established business relationships. Abraham's central theme is that everyone is in sales. In almost any profession, people must be skilled at selling themselves and their ideas, not just their company's product or service. Engagingly written, the book features more than 200 examples of people and companies who have successfully used these techniques, from Bill Gates and Dennis Rodman to Sharper Image and Federal Express. --Dan Ring

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Mind Blowing!.......2007-09-26

This book is the best marketing book I've read so far. I was amazed at the simple, yet powerful concepts that Jay laid out in the book, as well as some of the very sophisticated, and lucrative deals that he was able to put together in his case studies in the book.

This guy is the best... Hands down.

4 out of 5 stars Crash Course in Effective Marketing.......2007-09-23

Like Dan Kennedy's No B.S. Direct Marketing: The Ultimate, No Holds Barred, Kick Butt, Take No Prisoners Direct Marketing for Non-direct Marketing Businesses (No B.S.), this book by Jay Abraham is a primer containing practical steps to take your business where you want to go with it. Implementing just one of the steps will more than pay for your investment in the book. If you like what you read, then I highly recommend picking up a copy of Money-making Secrets of Marketing Genius Jay Abraham and Other Marketing Wizards (A No-Nonsense Guide to Great Wealth and a Personal Fortune) a.k.a. the Mr. X Book. If you only want to get one Abraham book, pick the Mr. X Book over this one. However, both are good. The Mr. X Book is simply better because it contains so much more information that you can use in your business.

5 out of 5 stars Scary good - you'll never look at business the same way again.......2007-08-18

This book is so good it's scary. It's scary to think about how powerful the principles are that Jay shares. It's also scary to think...what if I had gone through life and never been exposed to this?

I've read alot of business books. By Trump, Richard Branson, Robert Allen, Al Ries, Seth Godin, etc. They give you answers and little pieces of the puzzle.

They'll talk about customer service or "permission marketing" or another "hot strategy". Jay's material just obliterates everything else out there, he's not just giving you a 1/4 of the answer or an 1/8, he's giving you the whole answer. Answers that other people would charge thousands of dollars for in seminars, tens of thousands of dollars.

I'm a big fan of Jay. I have this book, many of his seminar tapes, Mastermind, PEQ, Strategy Summit. And many other reports and interviews.

The techniques and strategies he gives you are very, very powerful and profound. But there's so much hidden value in studying his material and really dissecting and analyzing what he's doing.

He's sold tens of millions of dollars worth of his own products and seminars. He sells out $15,000 seminars. Most people struggle to earn $200 or $300 an hour for consulting, how does Jay get $5,000? Why is it so powerful? Where does he get his answers from? I'd rip apart every word and every sentence he shares.

I'd study..

-His own positioning and selling strategies. His writing style is to die for. It'd serve as an incredible model/template if you write a newsletter, ezine, etc. Jay pounds into your head, "make everything have to perform", and obviously he does it with his writing.

-It amazes me that everyone wants to make money, we live in a very competitive world, and yet some of the answers Jay gives are so simple, why does everyone miss them?

For example, most people's advertising budget has no correlation to what a customer is worth. Jay focuses on marginal net worth. Most people think they're selling a drill, Jay focuses on the hole. Most people fall in love with the wrong thing (paraphrasing Jay). They want to be the biggest, the best, the fastest growing. They fall in love with the medium or the technology. It's trite, but Jay focuses on falling in love with the customer.

A huge error people make in business is thinking that the deeper they go in whatever they're doing (allocating a budget, selling, advertising, lead generating) the better they'll become. But you'll never come up with the right answers if you focus on the wrong thing. If you keep selling a drill a 100 times, it won't turn into a hole. Most people in business see alot of activity, Jay sees myopia, limited thinking and limited understanding (thus Jay's 3-D glasses).

-Lastly, Jay is brilliant at reducing and simplifying everything down to a core driving principle. Figuring out what makes something work. It's such an overlooked skill for entrepreneur and people in business.

A direct quote from Jay (from one of his tapes)

"The clearer your understanding, the simpler and the more reduced your awareness, of what makes something work, the more powerful it normally becomes."

That's a huge skill to develop. Forget about all this other stuff out there. Jumping on the latest fad, or tweaking something.

There's also alot of other lateral applications that I wonder about. He makes it look so easy. What would be the Jay equivilant in investing or real estate investing?

A mind blowing book.

5 out of 5 stars The Magic of Jay Abraham for the Price of a Pizza.......2007-08-18

Getting Everything You Can Out of All You've Got is Jay's only "real" published book, but it represents the summary of his collective experience and wisdom from decades of helping businesses optimize their own businesses.

Sure, you could hire Jay personally and pay thousands of dollars, and for many of you reading this, that may be the best move you ever made for your business.

But, for just a few dollars you can put Jay's magic to work immediately.

Yes, it is magic because he helps you create more money from the same assets you already have.

I sincerely believe you could take one or two ideas in this book and revolutionize your existing business.

Jay has a unique way of viewing the world...it's like he has the only pair of 3D glasses. For a glimpse into "Jay's World", get this book!

4 out of 5 stars Maybe those were different times.......2007-06-08

The book is good, with a lot of useful strategis, but it doesn't live up to buzz Jay Abraham creates for himself.

I guess that either the book is dated or Mr. Abraham has sandbaged information to sell his more profitable products.

5 out of 5 stars Cute, funny and scientifically sound........2007-10-02

Young children will be entertained and educated by What's the World Made of?, finding out about the three states of matter. With lots of funny, silly illustrations and some scientific observations of everyday stuff, this slim volume will stimulate readers to learn more about the suject and become increasingly aware of the world around them.

Excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-02-17

Ordered this for my son's 6th birthday and he really enjoyed it! It's great at explaining it at a "kid level" and he giggled througout the book!

5 out of 5 stars Science Made Fun & Easy.......2006-07-04

I have a 6-yr old boy and a 7-yr old girl. It's very rare to find anything that they agree on but with What Is the World Made Of? I was able to find a book that both of them would enjoy and learn from at the same time. The easy-to-follow language made it easy for them both to follow along. The fun pictures and odd bits of humor kept them interested and wanting to know more. A fantastic find & one I hope to be able to use for quite some time.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Teachers!!!.......2005-10-24

This book is an excellent way to introduce solids, liquids, and gases. I used it with a 3rd grade class and it was perfect!

5 out of 5 stars wonderful science/literature connection.......1999-07-12

this is an excellent literature connection for young children studying the concept of matter. it works well with the foss science module, "solids and liquids" for students in grades one and two.

Book Description

Ever since his astonishing victory in the 1991 PGA Championship, John Daly, known affectionately on the PGA Tour as "Big 'Un," has enthralled fans with his big drives, bigger personality, and "Grip It and Rip It" approach to golf -- and to life.

Long John, usually seen with a Marlboro Light dangling from his lip, is the unchained, unpredictable, unapologetic bad boy of professional golf. "The only rules I follow," JD likes to say, "are the Rules of Golf."

Daly's play-it-as-it-lays approach drives My Life in and out of the Rough, a thrillingly -- and sometimes shockingly -- candid memoir of a larger-than-life athlete battling assorted addictions (alcohol, gambling, chocolate, sex), his weight, and, perhaps worst of all, divorce lawyers. (He's been married four times.)

A two-time major winner before he turned thirty, John Daly is one of the most popular athletes in the world. Taking readers with him off the fairway and into his $1.5-million motor home for a rollicking ride through his life -- an ever-churning world of booze, burgers, casinos, country music, and breathtaking moonshots -- Daly reveals how a down-home Everyman from Arkansas managed to rise to the peak of the golf world, escape from the depths of abject depression, and, finally, take control of his life.

Well, sort of.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This book carries the same excitement as watching John tee it up on Sunday.......2007-08-07

First off I must tell you that I am a fan of John Daly and his incredible natural talents. This book uncovered every detail of John's life from a kid, through two major wins, and onto where he is today. I enjoyed every page and was glad to see John tell it like it is. This book is an easy read, partly because it carries a 4th grade reading level. However, the book does a good job of revealing all the truths. Yes, most readers may have different views on John's alcoholic dependance, but one thing is for sure John didn't hide the details. If you are a fan of John or find yourself amused by watching his up and down golf game, then this book is for you!

4 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2007-07-01

John Daly has interested me for a long time. I suppose the
whole under-dog thing, going up against the odds, etc. But
I really enjoyed reading this book. Thought it was an easy read
and well written since it was refreshingly naked in terms of
a person just showing all there is to show. I would recommend
it especially since it is so opposite of the whole stuffy
professional golf player fraternity.

4 out of 5 stars Gutsy self-deprecation.......2007-06-03

I have to say that after reading some of the reviews, I'm almost ashamed to write my own. But unlike some of the reviews, I'll spare you any moral soapboxing on my part and not judge the man. Quite simply, the book sheds considerable light on the life (both the good and the bad) of a guy who happens to be a well-known professional golfer. Kudos to John for having the courage to share much of his private life with the public. John's not a saint and doesn't pretend to be (and pretty much says so in the book). He candidly admits to a plethora of self destructive indulgences and decisions yet balances such with discussion about many of his commendable deeds. His honesty is refreshing. He talks about sex, love, alcohol, anger, guilt, determination, etc. He's human for God's sake!

I gave it four stars because it's an easy read and is written in a style suitable for the content. And if you're interested in learning about the life of John Daly, the content serves its purpose quite well. It's both entertaining and informative. It's not meant to win a literary prize. I enjoyed it for what it is - a good book.

2 out of 5 stars Addictive Behaviour?.......2007-03-23

Entertaining easy to read book but not very likely to fetch a Nobel Prize.

Interesting why Daly would want to make reference to several incidents of drunken driving and sad that he doesn't seem to feel particularly responsible for many of his own actions as an adult.

In my opinion the book reflects a considerable amount of raw untreated addictive behaviour and it kept me sober for a few days, thanks John.

4 out of 5 stars Probably more than I wanted to know.......2007-02-08

Daly doesn't hold a lot back when he authorizes his tell-alls. He also is not concerned too much about public perception. He is definitely one of the more colorful characters in professional golf. The book is a no holds barred account of many of his life experiences, good and bad. I am an avid golfer, and a fan of Daly's, and enjoyed reading the book.

On the occasion of her son's graduation from high school, Sandra Boynton, the well-loved creator of books and cards featuring hippos, dinosaurs, and sheep, has written a celebratory book for "onwardly mobile" readers. Everyone on the planet will compare this title to Dr. Seuss's Oh, the Places You'll Go, and we will, too. Yes, they're both delightful, silly picture books with vaguely unidentifiable critters as the emcees, rejoicing in the reader's recent graduation or other success. Festive exclamation points abound, along with rhyming, and alternating cheering and questioning ("Now what will you do?"). But Sandra Boynton is Sandra Boynton, and Dr. Seuss is Dr. Seuss, and ne'er the twain shall meet. Boynton's more contemporary text and illustrations feature a cow doing yoga ("OOM") and a headphone-clad fellow listening to "great rock-and-roll," among her other trademark characters flying away under balloons, partaking of chocolate, and scrambling up mountains. A box on the first page with "CONGRATULATIONS" across the top and "To" and "From" below make it perfectly clear that this is a book for giving. Behind all the goofy faces and simple rhymes is a very real, very sweet sentiment of pride and support that any loving friend or family member will be glad to share with that special successful person, young or old. Boynton's style can be recognized a mile away in such classics as Dinos to Go, Hippos Go Berserk!, and Moo, Baa, La La La!. (All ages) --Emilie Coulter

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Graduation Gift!.......2006-07-06

I have bought multiple copies of this book for my kids' friends for graduation gifts. I also bought it for my aunt when she recieved her doctorate degree. I decorated the inside of the kids' books with pictures throughout their kindergarten and Pre-K years at school. It has the best ending telling the person that no matter what they do in life they are special!

4 out of 5 stars Fun graduation gift!.......2006-07-05

I purchased this book as a high school graduation gift for my neice's boy friend, and the kids loved passing it around. It may be a children's book, but you're never too old for the message or to enjoy Boynton's artwork.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Graduation Gift.......2006-06-25

I'm a high school teacher and have found this book to be the perfect gift for my graduating seniors. The carefree illustrations and silly rhymes ease anxiety and nerves at a time when graduates are forced to consider their world with excessive seriousness. It's also a terrific gift for acknowledging promotions or career moves.

5 out of 5 stars Closing one chapter, opening another............2004-05-06

I am an elementary guidance counselor, responsible for planning our promotion program yearly for our fifth grade students as they move to middle school. I'm always looking for meaningful things to add to the ceremony, traditions the kids will look back on with happy memories. We do a lot in my school with "Oh the Places You'll Go..." so I was looking for something of this genre to use. "Yay, You" is just the right length. I read it to the kids just before the ceremony and then include a quick reading as a prelude to the processional out of the gym. Because the kids have heard it already, they know what is coming. The parents and guests absorb the meaning of the "moving up, moving out" very well. It's WONDERFUL and a number of parents have purchased it for their children to commemorate the event. It is indeed now a tradition.

5 out of 5 stars A Trip to the Past for Mom and Kids.......2003-02-18

When my children were small we read the Boynton board books so many times that we had to replace them for kid #3. They are one of my favorite baby shower gifts. Yay, You is a terrific book for both parents and kids (young adults?) as they enter the next life journey. Even if you have never experienced a Sandra Boynton book, you will enjoy this and smile as you realize that life goes on for all. This makes a fun grduation gift too!!

5 out of 5 stars Learning to Unlearn.......2007-06-09

I usually read a book of 175 pages in 2 - 5 days, however it took me 3 weeks to read this book. The reason is because I had to stop and think, ponder and strive to understand how the principles presented would change my life and ministry. I read many paragraphs 2 or 3 times as I hungered to ingest and internalize these "street level" principles for ministry that really touches people where they live. I highly recommend this book to anyone who feels unchalleged by the ministries and purpose of their local church. "Unlearning Church" is a book that will stir your heart to both experience and live out real faith and purpose.

3 out of 5 stars no more McChurch.......2004-12-16

Mike Slaughter has been one of the most articulate voices of the emerging church movement and his work at Ginghamsburg UMC has been liberating for many of us in the mainline denominationns.

Slaughter emphasizes the need to develop a church that takes seriously the mission to embody Christ in a way that responds to the culture the church finds itself in. This is more than the use technology and contemporary stuff approach, moving on to an organic embodiment of the kingdom. Slaughter says that the answers of Ginghamsburg are not necessarily your (or my) answers as that may not be authentic for our situation. He says to do this we have to unlearn church as we know it.

He mixes his insights with stories of churches that he considers to be effectively unlearning church and a series of questions at the end of each chapter to encourage the reader to actively unlearn what he/she "knows" to be true

My only problem with the book is that I've heard it in so many venues that it did not seem new, but that is more my issue than Slaughter's

4 out of 5 stars Wake up or Stay Dead.......2002-03-14

It's time for church leadership to wake up and see that those they want to reach for Chrisitianity are DIFFERENT than they are! Younger, in-touch with today's communications venues - but yearning for God (just as many of us have been). Slaughter uses vivid examples of how some churches have woken up to this fact. And, in a lively writing and textual font style of presentation brings this point home. As an older (age 50+) church leader my eyes are beginning to open. And,as Slaughter points out, a whole new adventure is beginning. Jesus Christ was, and is relevant - a simple fact not to be forgotten.

Book Description

Where does a young woman find straight talk about sex? From her friends, siblings, school? And how can you tell whether the information from those sources is accessible, accurate, and complete? Books will give facts, but the clinical approach of most books on sex makes the subject as approachable as a cold instrument in the gynecologist's office, and certainly offers little insight into the emotional issues and real-life dilemmas that surround sex and sexuality.

Now Amber Madison gives you just what you've been looking for: comprehensive and accurate information delivered in a style so down-to-earth that it's just like talking to your older sister or one of your best friends. Now there is an educational book about sex that is as captivating as a novel, and as fun as a slumber party. Hilarious, uninhibited, and chock full of must-have knowledge about safer sex and sexuality, Hooking Up gives you a tour of female anatomy plus frank talk on a slew of meaningful issues concerning sexual activity and intimacy. Revealing her own experiences and sometimes humorous mishaps, Amber covers topics ranging from safer sex and avoiding sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy to being comfortable with your own body; being aware of stereotypes surrounding female sexuality; and understanding guys' bodies, emotions, and their insecurities. She teaches you how to avoid being pressured into sex and equips you with the tools to be safe and responsible if you engage in sexual activities. All medical information has been reviewed and endorsed by both Margaret Higham, MD, medical director of Tufts University Health Service, and Diana L. Dell, MD, Duke University Medical School, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In a voice that is both informative and engaging, Amber will educate, entertain, and empower you—or a young lady you care about— to deal wisely with the questions, decisions, and consequences that surround sex and intimate relationships.

3 out of 5 stars Shortcomings.......2007-07-11

One of the reviewers - David L. Jenkins, from Virginia - comments, "How graphic is the chapter on the benefits of Abstinence? Counter culture concepts can be just way so.... freaky." Translation: there *is* no chapter on abstinence, as I found out when I actually read the book. Evidently this was meant to be sarcasm, but without a broader context a "clever" one-liner like this zinger becomes unintelligible.

That said, I do wish Madison had spent somewhat more time on abstinence, so I knocked off a star for that.

I was also disheartened that the book is coached entirely in "girls with guys" terms and seems written exclusively for heterosexuals. There *is* a "Chapter 14. Sexual Orientation: Gay? Straight? Questioning", in which the words Gay and Straight are crossed out. This chapter feels like an afterthought and one that really is restricted to the questioning element - "Gee, how do I know if I'm gay or not?" Only one page is dedicated to being gay as an actuality, with the header "I'm Pretty Sure I'm A Lesbian - So Now What?," followed by facile bulleted paragraphs -

- You are not alone.
- You are still normal.
- You are still at risk. (ie. of contracting STDs, or of becoming pregnant if you still choose to have sex with men)
- It will be OK.

That's...nice?...but here's an experiment: try "I'm pretty sure that I'm Straight - So Now What?" and see if one page is sufficient.

No, the author wrote a book to cover *that* eventuality. And here's the thing: much of the information in this book is something to which women across the spectrum can relate. Had Madison simply used more inclusive language throughout the book she would have done beautifully. Instead she wrote a book that purports to be a "girl's all-out guide to sex & sexuality" but wrote it in a way that makes it seem needlessly exclusivist. So that's where my second star went.

The intent of the author, as she said was to both write from her own experience, and from an youthful vantage, as someone who is still close to a lot of the concerns that young women are facing. I think she did a good job of that for the most part and agree that, for the most part, it grants the book its strength and appeal, *and* usefulness. If she ever does come back to it in second edition form, though, I hope that she will consider:

A. Giving abstinence a little more coverage (just because other books do doesn't mean you need to compensate by neglecting it), and
B. Writing the book so that it is more inclusive in its sense and sensibility.

5 out of 5 stars Amber Madison.......2007-03-29

This book was extreamly informative and funny. This book was a quick reader and unlike every other sex book is short but has a ton of information. If you want a book that is easy to get through and informs you about any chicks struggles with sex and sexual this book is it.

5 out of 5 stars An informative book for this new generation.......2007-03-21

Amber Madison demonstrates the importance of connecting with her audience. The book is written for teens, by a young woman who has experienced this chapter in her own life. "Hooking Up" is not a textbook, it is a book that may entice adolescents, both male and female, to read each chapter in its entirety.

Teenagers will do what they want in this new hooking up generation and the book is simply a resource to provide young adults with important information regarding some of the common issues faced by sexually active beings. The knowledge provided to young women (and men) via this book increases awareness, paticularly about topics relating to sex such a STDs, pregnancy and good decision making strategies.

During this generation of casual flings and hookups, it is the notion that women are in danger of being viewed as sexual beings that often elicits fear throughout society. Perhaps a book that rightfully suggests the natural needs of women and men alike provides the solution.

2 out of 5 stars Serious Omissions, Flippant Style.......2007-03-16

As far as medical facts and mechanics go, I have no quarrel with this book. I am troubled, however, by its omissions and general tone. It says nothing about love or marriage. Its style is breezy and jocular to the point of being flippant, undermining any serious statements it might contain. I don't see wisdom here.

The book regurgitates 1970s Feminist views of sexuality. Unlike this author, many Feminists of that period now believe that they were at least partially wrong. Some acknowledge that the sexual revolution has been a disaster for women.

The book's index indicates that there is something about love on 17 pages. Examination of those pages, however, fails to reveal anything on that subject. "What's love got to do with it?" Nothing, evidently. There is no index entry for "marriage."

Perhaps the most serious statement in the book is about losing one's virginity, p 74. "Make sure that you are morally and spiritually at peace with the idea of having sex before you do it." That is excellent advice but it is undermined by a statement on p 73 on the same subject, "For some (the right guy) means someone who says he loves you, and for others it means someone who says he knows your last name."

We should, I think, try to live our lives so that we can be happy. This requires living so as to minimize regrets. One can always try to forgive oneself, but when serious mistakes pile up, the subconscious will not allow that and unhappiness results. This author's attitudes are a guaranteed recipe for unhappiness for many, probably most, girls and women.

Young readers of this book should also read and seriously consider the ideas expressed in "unhooked" (Laura Sessions Stepp, 2007) and "A Return to Modesty" (Wendy Shalit, 1999).

5 out of 5 stars Strongly Recommended Resource.......2007-03-13

One of the most important things that can be done to encourage adolescent and young women to make safe, responsible decisions about their sexuality is to provide them with the tools and information necessary to make those decisions. Amber's book, Hooking Up-A Girls All-Out Guide to Sex and Sexuality, does just that, and does it in a very balanced way. She discusses the positives AND the negatives associated with a variety of behaviors and decision-making processes, and presents girls with the information necessary to understand how and why their bodies and emotions function as they do.

Amber writes in a conversational tone and with a sense of humor that makes the book an easy read and, perhaps more importantly, easy to comprehend. The book covers just about everything young women need to know in a short, concise format that is not intended to be a treatise on the subject, but rather an introduction to what they need to know to understand how their sexuality impacts them and their bodies at this age. It is also a good read for guys who want some insight into what women face as they learn to manage their own sexuality.

This book accomplishes its purpose so well that I have placed it at the top of my "Must Read" list for teenagers and young women. I wish I had had this book or a book like it when I was in high school, and I'd definitely recommend that any parent give it to their daughter.

Book Description

Emma-Jean Lazarus is a lovable oddball who thinks she can use logic to solve the “messy” everyday problems of her seventh-grade peers. It's easy—she just follows the example of her late father, a brilliant mathematician. Of course, the more Emma-Jean gets involved, the messier her own life gets. Suddenly she's no longer the person standing on the outside of all social interactions. But perhaps that's a good thing?

If you took The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and Ida B . . . and Her Plans to Maximize Fun, Avoid Disaster, and (Possibly) Save the World and put them in a middle-grade blender, you would have the book Emma- Jean Lazarus Fell Out of a Tree. Quirky, honest, and written by first-time author Lauren Tarshis, this is a tender story about what happens when a girl who has long stood in the social shadows gets a taste of what it's like to connect with kids her own age.

5 out of 5 stars Emma Jean Lazarus Fell Out of a Tree.......2007-09-25

Tarshis, Lauren. Emma-Jean Lazarus Fell Out of a Tree. Dial Books for Young Readers, 2007

Emma-Jean Lazarus is in the seventh grade at William Gladstone Middle School where she observes rather than interacts with her classmates. Her father, who died in a car accident a couple of years ago when she was only 10, had been a successful mathematician who influenced her to want her world to be logical and rational, "Emma-Jean had observed her peers closely over the years. Her painstaking research had given her a much clearer understanding of their complex emotional lives and surprising sensitivities." When Emma finds a classmate crying in the girls' bathroom, she decides to use her excellent problem solving skills to intervene behind the scenes to fix Colleen's problem. A series of unfortunate events ensue until Emma finally understands that some of her well-intended actions have had negative consequences. Emma is a combination of thoughtful and naïve as she struggles to deal with the damage she has caused; fortunately facing up to her role in some troublesome events enables her to grow significantly as she learns how to interact more wisely with her peers. Woven in to this story about a child who is dealing with the death of a parent is a sweet subplot that has an older student, Vikram Adwani from Mumbai, India who is studying for a PhD at the local University, board with Emma and her mother. Emma really likes this gentleman, in fact, they spend many afternoons talking and cooking fragrant curry meals after she gets home from school, until she realizes that her mother and Vikram are growing maybe too fond of each other. Now Emma decides to intervene to help Vikram's mother find him a lovely Indian bride. Emma is a very appealing character in this wonderful story that blends humor with poignancy.

5 out of 5 stars A fabulous audio recording of a terrific first novel.......2007-09-12

Gummer, the daughter of Meryl Streep, does an absolutely terrific job of bringing to life the various characters (brainy Emma Jean, anxious Colleen, villainous Laura, even wise Vikram!) from this winning debut novel. It's also a plus that this trim book, packed full of plot and humor, is only one-long-car-trip length, clocking in at just over three hours. (I found myself in the rare position of wishing it was longer.) Gummer's reading is so absorbing, this most girly of stories was even enjoyed by a 13-year-old boy, who rolled his eyes at all the seventh-grade dramatics, but nonetheless admitted it was like spying on a conversation he'd never be privy to any other way.

5 out of 5 stars Richie's Picks: EMMA-JEAN LAZARUS FELL OUT OF A TREE.......2007-08-17

"It had been nearly two and a half years since Emma-Jean had climbed, but the motions came right back to her, as if they had been programmed into her limbs. She shimmied up the skinny trunk like her father had taught her, keeping her knees tight together. She grabbed the lowest branch, hoisting herself up in the manner of a gymnast mounting the uneven parallel bars. At several junctures, the branches formed sturdy V-shaped joints, providing footholds for Emma-Jean's white Keds. She was mindful not to disturb the tiny buds that were forming, and kept her feet clear of the most delicate branches."

"Hey, ho, makes you feel so fine
Looking out across the orchard in the bright sunshine.
Hey, ho, you feel so free
Standing in the top of an apple tree."
--Larry Hanks, "Apple Picker's Reel"

When I finish writing this piece, I will get to dive into a very special dessert. Shari spent the afternoon baking a pair of Gravenstein apple pies from our very first crop of apples, grown in a corner of our little Sebastopol, California farm.

It really tickled me when, twenty years ago, I was paging through RISE UP SINGING, searching out new songs to share at circletime, and found the Apple Picker's Reel which was accompanied by Larry Hanks' commentary about having written it while he was, himself, picking apples in Sebastopol.

Back in those days, I'd recently moved from the East Coast to California (with my goats) and had discovered my farm which was, then, bordered on the north and west by neighboring Gravenstein apple trees standing shoulder to shoulder for as far as the eye could see.

This was of no small importance to me. My relationship with apple trees goes back to my early childhood in the late Fifties when I learned to climb "my" apple tree in the backyard of our family's small suburban house in Plainview, Long Island, and gaze down over my kingdom which included the swing set and the little round swimming pool.

"No one I think is in my tree, I mean it must be high or low"
-- Lennon and McCartney, "Strawberry Fields"

Tragically, those neighboring apple trees in Sebastopol were all torn out a number of years ago to make room for wine grapes. You'd better believe that it wasn't merely all the dust being stirred up by the giant tractors that was causing me to cry when the corpses of those old trees were being stacked up in pyres around the perimeter.

And, of course, being ever the contrarian, I was out there planting baby Gravensteins (with a rich dressing of aged goat manure) while everybody else in the hills was tearing them out.

Having nurtured our tiny orchard of apple trees from when they were the length of my forearm to the harvesting of this first crop, I now recognize that the apple tree that I'd climbed all those decades ago in Plainview must have been planted sometime back during the Roaring Twenties or the years of The Great Depression for its having been so exceptionally wide and tall with its maze of sturdy limbs to traverse and its bountiful crop of tart, green apples. It will surely be decades before my adolescent trees in Sebastopol will be sufficiently strong to permit my teaching a child to climb them in the fashion that Emma-Jean Lazarus's father had taught her to climb trees.

Sadly, the love of her mother's (and her) life -- her father, the mathematician -- died in a car crash two-and-a-half years ago, and that is why Emma-Jean has not climbed a tree (either literally or figuratively) since then.

But, in a move that is uncharacteristic for this cautious observer, this foe of disorder that she has since become, seventh grader Emma-Jean Lazarus decides to go out on a limb to assist a schoolmate in distress.

"All Emma-Jean knew was this: Some irrational, emotional force had compelled her to enter the chaotic world of her peers, where the rules of logic did not apply."

The focus of Emma-Jean's assistance is her fellow seventh-grader, Colleen, a very believable character who struggles to walk the narrow line between being popular and doing the right thing.

"You're right, Emma-Jean,' Colleen whispered. 'The truth is I'm not doing well at all. I'm having some trouble, bad trouble, with some of my friends...' Colleen shook her head. 'Some people...aren't nice.'
"Emma-Jean knew this was true. People sometimes behaved unkindly toward one another, even at William Gladstone Middle School. Hurt feelings, bruised egos, broken promises, betrayed confidences -- the list of emotional injuries her fellow seventh-graders inflicted on one another was dismayingly long.
"Of course, Emma-Jean was fond of her peers. In fact, she believed that one was unlikely to find a finer group of young people than the 103 boys and 98 girls with whom she spent her school days. But their behavior was often irrational. And as a result, their lives were messy. Emma-Jean disliked disorder of any kind, and had thus made it her habit to keep herself separate, to observe from afar."

When Emma-Jean decides to risk going out on that limb, to forgo that separateness and face that which cannot be ordered logically, there will be consequences for the adolescents and adults who are affected by her climb back into the oft-messy and irrational world.

EMMA-JEAN LAZARUS FELL OUT OF A TREE is a sophisticated and captivating tale that I will be recommending most enthusiastically for use by our sixth grade English teachers in Sebastopol.

And now on to the pie.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, what voice!.......2007-07-08

Lauren Tarshis has such a talent to create "real" characters. She's done an excellent job writing from the perspective of a teen-aged girl with Asperger's Syndrome and super job with the voice of a typical teen girl.

It is refreshing to read such a well-written book. I literally couldn't put it down and read it in one sitting.

As a parent of a child with AS, I would like to extend sincere thanks to Tarshis for writing about this difficult subject. She accurately depicts how differently people with Asperger's Syndrome can perceive every day situations and social interactions. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to better understand those with AS, especially classmates of teens with AS.

5 out of 5 stars A delightful and insightful book about being different, dealing with bullies and overcoming grief.......2007-06-05

Emma-Jean Lazarus is a gifted and unself-conscious 12-year-old who sits by herself at lunchtime and relies on logic and reason to help her survive seventh grade. At school, she considers the janitor and language arts teacher her friends. Others include her mother, Elizabeth; Henri, her father's 17-year-old parakeet; and Vikram Adwani, a student at the local university who has rented the third floor of Emma-Jean's house.

Emma-Jean's heroes are her father Eugene, a college mathematics professor who died two years earlier, and legendary French mathematician Jules Henri Poincare, who was also her father's hero. Emma-Jean's approach to life mirrors that of Poincare, who believed that "even the most complex problems could be solved through a process of creative thinking."

Emma-Jean is comfortable being different but feels there is an "invisible door" that separates her from fellow students like Colleen Pomerantz and Will Keeler.

Colleen Pomerantz is one of the nicest seventh-graders at William Gladstone Middle School, but she's a worrier who cares deeply about what her classmates think. One day, Emma-Jean discovers Colleen in the bathroom crying. Colleen tells Emma-Jean she's upset because her best friend, Kaitlin Vogel, has invited Laura Gilroy to the Vogel family's annual ski weekend in Vermont instead of her. Laura is bossy and loud and takes pleasure in manipulating other students to get what she wants. After seeing how upset Colleen is, and knowing how Laura behaves as the seventh grade's "female alpha chimp," Emma-Jean uses her logic and intelligence to help Colleen.

Will Keeler is a middle-of-the road student, a star of the seventh-grade basketball team and the object of Laura's affection. One day Will comes to Emma-Jean's rescue when Brandon Mahoney, a bully who "does not practice good dental hygiene," tries to humiliate her during lunchtime. Later, when Will is falsely accused by one of the teachers of stealing candy, Emma is determined to clear Will's name.

By getting involved in the lives of her fellow students, Emma-Jean has stepped through that invisible door. Her actions to solve Will's problem prove successful, but her activities on Colleen's behalf create a new and even worse situation. Colleen gets to go to Vermont with Kaitlin, but Laura is embarrassed and vows revenge. After Colleen discovers what Emma-Jean has done, she is disappointed and angry, and refuses to talk to Emma-Jean. Emma-Jean comes to Colleen's house to apologize, but Colleen stays in her bedroom. When Emma-Jean climbs a magnolia tree outside Colleen's bedroom window to reason with her, Emma-Jean slips and tumbles to the ground.

While recovering from her accident, Emma-Jean wishes she could go back to the way things used to be --- before she interfered in her classmates' lives and before her father died. But she knows that isn't possible. While comforting Emma-Jean, her mother reads that quote from Poincare; eventually, Emma-Jean comes to understand why this was so special to her father. Poincare's words, "It is by logic that we prove, but it is in our hearts that we discover life's possibilities," help Emma-Jean realize that there is more to life than logic and that she's not so different from her classmates after all.

EMMA-JEAN LAZARUS FELL OUT OF A TREE is a delightful and insightful book about being different, dealing with bullies and overcoming grief. The voices of Emma-Jean, Colleen and Will are fresh and engaging. I hope that Lauren Tarshis will write more stories about these likable characters and their middle-school adventures.

This is a good book to use during any study on air. It provides some easy hands-on experiments with good visual pictures to illustrate the properties of air. Good choice for any science class with Kindergarten or First Grade students.

5 out of 5 stars Practical guide to decluttering your workspace.......2006-05-23

As owner of one of the U.S.'s largest cleaning firms, author Don Aslett has first hand experience with the way that mess and confusion can impede a good day's work. His book shines a light on the chaos, from overflowing wastebaskets to staggering stacks of paper, to (gasp!) the inside of the communal refrigerator. He reveals why out-of-control office clutter is not simply unsightly, but harmful to your productivity and your career. Then, he offers the cure, including ways to reduce paper accumulation, organize your workspace, weed through the junk and create your own filing system. He brings humor, enthusiasm and passion to tackling the daunting job you need to do before you can do your real job. If you want to be liberated from your office mess and experience the exhilaration of a clutter-free work life, we recommend this book - just put it on top of your stack.

5 out of 5 stars Quite helpful.......2005-05-27

This book is a humorous pictural guide to reducing office clutter. It offers many reasons for "86-ing" piles of useless clutter and suggests alternate solutions such as using a briefcase.

4 out of 5 stars very motivating.......2003-02-16

This is classic Aslett -- it will have you pitching half the papers on your desk in no time. Aslett has some good ideas on how to begin to conquer the clutter of accumulated paper, and ideas that can be used in discrete time increments. Of all the clutter / office organization books I've read, his are the only ones that actually make me eager to get to work.

Two reasons I gave this book four stars rather than five, are (1) because of Aslett's gratuitous name-dropping & boasting (when my coimpany was cleaning AT&T, when I was consulting with the top executives of IBM, when I was making one of my many TV appearances with Regis & Kahie Lee . . . ); and (2) because Aslett seems to consider himself an expert on all things rather than sticking to what he knows best. Of course, I've read most of his books, and there is some redundancy, as if they're just regurgitations of former material. If you haven't read his other books, you might not have this perception. Nonetheless, every time I read one of his books I can manage to throw out several boxes of stuff, and after reading this, my office at work no longer has any hidden stacks of papers waiting to be dealt with.

4 out of 5 stars Offices and Classrooms.......2003-01-29

I don't work in an office. I work in a classroom. However, I found that much of what is said in this book applies to me.

I teach science, and have worked in 2 different schools where I inherited the previous teacher's mess. In the first one, I applied many of Aslett's principles without even realizing it. There was so much junk that I couldn't even work. I did almost no labs my first year because I couldn't find anything!

At my new school, started by organizing. Recently, I read this book and was inspired. I went through my storage area and threw out every broken piece of equipment. I also snuck out a few pieces of equipment that I knew I would never use.

It has been a wonderful feeling. I now have room to have a sort of "office" in my storage room. I can find equipment quickly, making me more likely to do labs, and I have created room for the equipment I plan to order that I will use.

I see no obvious connection, but I now get my work done a lot faster. I write a lot of my own material. Before I did my decluttering I was working until midnight or later. Now I'm going home for supper, and coming back and working only a few more hours.

His book is not so big on specifics. That is why I did not give it a fifth star. A few more specific ideas on organizing papers and the clutter I'm required to have would have helped. Overall, however, he covers the general principles of clutter removal and organization, he is inspiring, and, most important, this book is a help.

Honestly, this book made me a better teacher!

5 out of 5 stars This book decluttered my mind.......2002-04-07

When I was the secretary and the executive assistant, I was the best and most organized person any boss could want. When I became the boss, I became buried in meetings, interruptions, customer service and problems, no one to delegate to, and fear of losing something important. In the past 7 years I have bought many "organizational" books - some I even bought twice because they never got through to me (didn't even impress me enough to remember I had bought them before!) to help me tackle the piles of paper. I pretty much shuffled stacks around until I bought Don's book. I started reading it yesterday, and after being out sick for one week, I went in today (Saturday) and in 4 hours, cleaned out 3 years of paper. I didn't just clean - I got rid of. I looked at everything with new eyes. Don has a way of putting all that paper into clear perspective - you can look at paper and see if it should go or stay. It was incredible. Now my mind is decluttered too - just like he said. I would recommend this to anyone who has a lot of paper (and facts) to deal with. His common-sense approach helps you make it your own - there's nothing to learn - he just puts it all in perspective so you can know how YOU want to deal with it. I've never written a review before - but couldn't wait to write this one. I hope this helps some other person tackle their paper. I accomplished more today than I can remember in one day - and know this will help me stay organized and cut back on the 70 hr weeks I normally put in. My employees respect me, but I always felt out of control with all that paper staring me (and everyone else) in the face. Now my office looks like I am in control! Thanks, Don!
