Book Description
Is it really possible to change the structure and function of the brain, and in so doing alter how we think and feel? The answer is a resounding yes. In late 2004, leading Western scientists joined the Dalai Lama at his home in Dharamsala, India, to address this very question–and in the process brought about a revolution in our understanding of the human mind. In this fascinating and far-reaching book, Wall Street Journal science writer Sharon Begley reports on how cutting-edge science and the ancient wisdom of Buddhism have come together to show how we all have the power to literally change our brains by changing our minds. These findings hold exciting implications for personal transformation.
For decades, the conventional wisdom of neuroscience held that the hardware of the brain is fixed and immutable–that we are stuck with what we were born with. As Begley shows, however, recent pioneering experiments in neuroplasticity, a new science that investigates whether and how the brain can undergo wholesale change, reveal that the brain is capable not only of altering its structure but also of generating new neurons, even into old age. The brain can adapt, heal, renew itself after trauma, and compensate for disability.
Begley documents how this fundamental paradigm shift is transforming both our understanding of the human mind and our approach to deep-seated emotional, cognitive, and behavioral problems. These breakthroughs show that it is possible to reset our happiness meter, regain the use of limbs disabled by stroke, train the mind to break cycles of depression and OCD, and reverse age-related changes in the brain. They also suggest that it is possible to teach and learn compassion, a key step in the Dalai Lama’s quest for a more peaceful world. But as we learn from studies performed on Buddhist monks, an important component in changing the brain is to tap the power of mind and, in particular, focused attention. This is the classic Buddhist practice of mindfulness, a technique that has become popular in the West and that is immediately available to everyone.
With her extraordinary gift for making science accessible, meaningful, and compelling, Sharon Begley illuminates a profound shift in our understanding of how the brain and the mind interact. This tremendously hopeful book takes us to the leading edge of a revolution in what it means to be human.

'Focus & Attention.".......2007-09-29
This book is based in part on an Oct.2004 meeting bewtween the Dalai Lama & a group of western neurologists & psychologists to discuss the mutability of the human brain. The main positives of this book are that it is meticulously researched, & yet concise. But, despite the title it is not a self-help book. One should not expect any life altering experiences. This is a history of neuro-plasticity, a cerebral trait discovered by neuro-scientific experiments some twenty years ago. The books central message is that the brain/mind can change when we want it to. The techniques of mental discipline can be learned, & our negative traits reduced. Here eastern philosophy & meditation meets western neuro-science. When the reader is interested in the latest developments for treating dysfunction & depression, or in the mental deterioration brought by aging this is a good place to start. Basically, the adult brain retains much of the plasticity of the developing brain, to change the circuitry that weaves neurons into the networks that allow us to think, feel, dream, remember, & suffer. Some findings show that changes can occur by certain mental activities: like learning a language, or playing a musical instrument. To a degree, the neuro-science does blend with the buddhist belief that our reality can be created by our own thoughts & projections. I have learned that meditation can truly help alter ones feelings, especially in dealing with grief & depression. The book explains in detail how various experiments, training methods, & therapies can change the adult brain. It has shown a remarkable ability to cope with unexpected changes, like blindness, recovering from a stroke, etc. The crucial changes in the brain can willfully overcome neural problems like dyslexia, etc by changing its own circuitry. However, the book does not actually answer all of the questions it poses. I was also a bit taken back that the Dalai Lama would condone animal testing? His statment that the larger human community would benefit from the experiments felt expedient to me. Still, this is a four star book for all the data it contains.
Surprising science: new about neuroplasticity. .......2007-09-06
For nearly a century, scientific dogma held that the brain is immutable, fixed by genes and early upbringing. Wall Street Journal science writer Sharon Begley recently visited the frontiers of neuroscience and returned with a news flash: The dogma is wrong. Researchers have discovered that the brain remains plastic, lifelong. This creates new frontiers: Stroke victims can rewire their brains using challenging exercises; deaf people can repurpose dormant auditory cortexes for other tasks; and blind people can begin to "see" patterns of Braille dots using a seemingly dead visual cortex. Suspecting that they were on to a general pattern, researchers soon looked for similar changes in "normal" brains. Working repetitively on your golf swing, playing the piano or learning a language, they found, also change your brain in lasting, important ways, as does practicing compassion toward others. Begley arrives with heavyweight friends: a foreword by the Dalai Lama and a preface by Daniel Goleman of Emotional Intelligence. If you want to understand how the brain keeps working, and how to make yours do more of what you want it to, we think you should start here. Your brain will thank you.
Change your Life.......2007-08-23
Reading this book will change your life by providing scientific proof that humans can change their brains through meditation. The book is readily accessible to the non-scientific/technical reader and the sections involving the Dalai Lama are fascinating. Those interested in neuroscience, meditation, improving one's quality of life, or in the mysteries of the brain will enjoy this book. Educators and parents will also will find this book as inspiration because it suggests a radical new approach to educating and developing young minds.
Understanding our brain.......2007-07-12
Personal renewal through understanding how the brain works is a subject I am very interested in. This book gets you into the science behind this most promising area of new understanding. It is a subject we all need to know more about - science has learned so much about it in the last 15 years - and this book is a very good place to begin your study of this most important developing area of knowledge.
stunning.......2007-07-05
Train your Mind, Change your Brain is a fascinating look at new discoveries in neuroplasticity and their relation to Buddhist practice. Probably the most salient thing with which I came away from this book is the sense of man's self-determinacy and ability to improve himself. In the age-old debate between heredity and environment, the book highlights new discoveries weighing in heavily on the side of environment. Victor Frankl would be proud.
While the information given is often in relation specifically to Buddhist meditation practice, there is very little material here that is not directly applicable to the contemplative tradition of any religion. For that matter, most of what is presented here does not posit religious beliefs at all - for instance, how exploitation of neuroplasticity can correct dyslexia, help people recover use of paralyzed limbs after strokes, etc.; and how continued research into neuroplasticity may help reverse the mental/neural effects of aging.
Begley writes in a very accessible way - the book was quite readable even for a layman like me. It does help to have a basic knowledge of the principles of Buddhism before starting with this book - I'd recommend reading The Art of Happiness by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Howard Cutler as background.

In this age of do-it-yourself health care (heck, if the doctor only sees you for 10 minutes each visit, what other options are there?), Change Your Brain, Change Your Life fits in perfectly. Filled with "brain prescriptions" (among them cognitive exercises and nutritional advice) that are geared toward readers who've experienced anxiety, depression, impulsiveness, excessive anger or worry, and obsessive behavior, Change Your Brain, Change Your Life milks the mind-body connection for all it's worth.
Written by a psychiatrist and neuroscientist who has also authored a book on attention deficit disorder, Change Your Brain contains dozens of brain scans of patients with various neurological problems, from caffeine, nicotine, and heroin addiction to manic-depression to epilepsy. These scans, often showing large gaps in neurological activity or areas of extreme overactivity, are downright frightening to look at, and Dr. Amen should know better than to resort to such scare tactics. But he should also be commended for advocating natural remedies, including deep breathing, guided imagery, meditation, self-hypnosis, and biofeedback for treating disorders that are so frequently dealt with by prescription only.

Worth Reading.......2007-09-24
After reading this book, I tried some of the prescriptions which seemed to fit me. They do work if you are serious about doing them. Reading this book has made a difference in my emotional health.
"Brain Overclaim Syndrome".......2007-09-05
There is precious little solid science here. Amen would seem to be suffering from "Brain Overclaim Syndrome" -- a term coined by Prof. Stephen J. Morse -- where people read much more into brain imaging than is warrented, simply because they have, well...have impressive images to show their clients.
Actually, it would appear impossible to say much about the behavior of any particular individual based on brain imaging, because the research to date has shown there to be substantial overlap in the results between controls and experimental subjects. Diagnosing by imaging at this point may have more to do with reading tea leaves than it does with science.
Informative, provocative and sometimes controversial..........2007-07-31
I admire Dr. Amen's ability to explain the complex interworkings and relationships between different parts of the brain. I also appreciate his ability to relate these concepts to practical everyday problems and common psychological pathologies such as anxiety, ADD and depression. He even talks about some case study information on relationship dynamics.
While Amen is a controversial figure in some ways, he still has much to stay about keeping your brain healthy and he has the credentials and clinical experience to go along with fact that he has scanned more brains than anyone else. This does not make him infallible, but it certainly makes him an important player in pushing the frontiers of knowledge forward. On the other hand, he seems to have a bias toward SPECT scans that is not fully warranted based on other scientist and clinician's work. It's difficult to reduce the functioning of the brain to an in the moment scan or even multiple scans over time.
Suprisingly, this book is very readable for the average layman and equally fascinating. It has a number of quizzes and checklists for determining the strength of functioning of various areas of the brain and useful supplement suggestions. While this book is about 10 years old, it certainly contains lots of useful information. If you want an updated version of this, then I recommend his other book Making a Good Brain Great: The Amen Clinic Program for Achieving and Sustaining Optimal Mental Performance. This book is aimed less at pathology and more about what you can do to improve and take care of your brain in general. While not brain specific, Andrew Weil's book Healthy Aging: A Lifelong Guide to Your Well-Being is a nice compliment to both of these books and focuses on the health of the entire body.
Helpful for Neurofeedback Practioners and Clients.......2007-07-13
I have found this book to be a great resource for me as a neurofeedback clinician, both for my own use and my clients'. It's easy to read, has lots of SPECT images to reference, and provides helpful checklists for various behaviors associated with problems in different brain regions. Dr. Amen is a rarity in the psychiatric profession in that he's open to looking outside the box and being open to various treatment methods beyond simply writing prescriptions. While he does discuss the benefits of medication a lot in this book, he also mentions neurofeedback training several times as well and provides many cognitive behavioral techniques to aid with various issues.
Fascinating Science.......2007-06-09
Most books on this subject are very dry and clinical. Daniel Amen inserts some humor into this very serious subject. I have read articles about Daniel Amen saying he is a quack simply because other professionals have not adopted his mantra that mental health issues are caused by physical problems in the brain. Change Your Brain Change Your Life identifies the component parts of the brain and maladies caused by overactive or under active functioning of the component parts. Dr. Amen prescribes remedies from diet changes to cognitive therapy to psychotropic drug therapy in an informative, thought provoking, easy to read format. This book is an enlightening account of the brain and its functions.

Book Description
Finally, a book that challenges conventional "wisdom" about healing from emotionally destructive traumas and abuse. Simply put, you can't think your way to happiness if you've suffered injuries as a child or youth. Yet every day, millions of adult Americans who suffer from emotionally devastating mistreatment at the hands of family members, friends, acquaintances, or strangers receive this dangerous message from a multi-billion dollar self-help industry. As a result, millions try to put advice about "healing yourself" into practice. Yet millions of sincere, intelligent, and highly motivated people who have followed all the popular pathways for self-healing still feel depressed, anxious, unloved, and unlovable.
This engaging and highly readable book, based in the author's professional experience in treating those who suffer from the devastating effects of emotional trauma, offers hope for those who suffer and those who care about them. Dr. McGraw describes how trauma affects the brain and, therefore, one's ability to carry out 'good advice'; explains the subtle and hidden process of attunement and attachment that take place between parents and children, examining their impact on all future relationships; tells what is needed for healing to occur; discusses the profound health benefits of spirituality and a relationship with God in assisting and accelerating the healing process; and suggests how members of the helping professions can begin to tap the deepest, most authentic parts of themselves to touch the hearts of those they seek to help.

It's Not Your Fault: How Healing Relationships Change Your Brain.......2006-11-10
This is a common sense approach to phyisological & phsychological issues suffered by abused people.
I really enjoyed the basic needs being met for the patients in the mental & phsycial realms, by the most fundamental way; caring & connecting instead of giving a pill or powder to shut them up or quickly get them on to another program that won't work.
Every one on the planet that has ever had or will a have a relationship with anyone should read this; professionals in this field especially!
Rewiring the brain.......2004-12-12
I found this book fascinating. When I was a young mother, I knew it was important to relate to my child in a helpful, healing way. I read many books on childhood development and none gave me the information that this book does. In the early chapters, the book explains the mechanics of brain development and the importance of the bonding relationship between mother and child. Watching a close friend of mine with her infant son has given me the opportunity to be an educated observor of this (thirty years too late for my own child!). The second half of the book takes the reader through a case study of a woman whose upbringing did not provide any opportunity for healthy development and whose subsequent life reflected this. Through the parenting process of therapy the counselor actually restructured her brain, helping to close the pathways that caused pain and pathology in her life.
This book would be helpful for therapist's needing to understand more fully the transformative nature that therapy can provide. Also I think young mothers could also benefit by understanding the choices that mothers make and the consequences in raising their children.
What about GETTING healing relationships?.......2004-09-26
I need a book on that. I was in the mental health system for 20 + years and never had one. And they all missed the point of my real problems. Then when you try to get a doctor like her to have a healing relationship, she does everything under the sun to keep her distance from you while at the same time pretending not to, which is a specific example of a general affliction of so many people in the mental health field which is having an expert ability to lie as well as being a hypocrite when needed (convenience) and then covering it up. Where is the honesty? How many therapists are the same way as people as they are as therapists. And that is a real problem for the whole mental health system.
A powerful and vital contribution .......2004-08-12
Written by a psychologist who has given individual and group psychotherapy to trauma and abuse victims for over twenty-five years, It's Not Your Fault is a spiritual self-help guide that denounces the commonly trumpted belief that one can simply think one's way to happiness. Warning that those who suffer from the devastating effects of trauma cannot simply think themselves happy, and offering down-to-earth wisdom for improving one's emotional health and well-being without setting unrealistic goals, It's Not Your Fault is a powerful and vital contribution to understanding the deepest parts of oneself and how to seek out the help one needs to improve the quality of one's life.
It's Not Your Fault.......2004-06-24
What a great book! Well written and very informative. Everyone should read this book. Perhaps people will learn some compassion and understanding for the person trying to heal from trauma. This book explains why someone can't "get over," or "let go" of a painful past. They need other people. What a concept! The story of Kim is so inspirational. I'd love to meet her. Thank you for this book.
Book Description
This book tells the inside story of Leary's early LSD research at Harvard. Known throughout the world as the guru who encouraged an entire generation to "turn on, tune in, and drop out," he draws on wit, humor, and skepticism to debunk the power of psychotherapy and to advocate reprogramming the brain with psychedelics. Discussing how various drugs affect the brain, how to change behavior, and how to develop creativity, he also delves into psychopharmacological catalyzing, fear of potential, symbol and language imprinting, and brain reimprinting with Hinduism, Buddhism, and LSD.

Don't pay good money for a "childrens" book on psychedelics.......2007-06-08
Got about half way through the book and tossed it aside. First of all I got it expected a good long read but the book is the thickness and word size of a childrens book. I now agree with others who think Leary was too wraped up in being a leader of the acid culture as it comes off in his arrogant style of writing. I felt like I was being talked down to in places and lied to in others. Leary tries to persuade you to his point of view to the point of lying. Its not that I am just an anti-drug person cutting down the book because I think drugs are bad; I've read and enjoyed many other drug culture books. I support honest information on drugs. If you want to read an interesting, honest book on psychedelics try something by Adeous Huxley.
Totam tibi subdo me.......2006-07-13
It is not there simply for appearing part here, but rather to appear part there. They do not jump the categories and they get where we go. The dislocated paradigm appeared as if nobody had not taken a reading. Thus it is difficult to get our rolamentos. So who thinks about the foundation of parents, unless it is not excellent to its situation? Illumination beckons, but it is not definitive...and the infinitive certainly is not duplicated. They try to adapt pieces in new matrices, the not old ones. To the arrest of the woman demonstrates they had had matrices at least once in their lives. My matrices are grumosos. Grumoso was the friend of Wally. Wally was an astronaut. It's so easy to rhyme the name of extremity with hourra. Hourra for Captain Spaulding. Elephant, pyjamas, etc. The "I" is moved away. "Correcto," she said as she put old pieces in new matrices. "Don't mention the arrest of the woman or her sibling," she cried. (She sees them in the spaces for new features.) But that is old wisdom. They do not put the new wine in old, old wine peels, nor do they put the new wine in "ivrognes," whatever those are. "They" get it perhaps. Do you?
Do you think that the last lives are less complex, or just that the matrix has more dimensions and the known pieces are identical? Hmmm. Do not imply more complexity in the experience until you have learned not to remember new pieces. He is like a devil's food cake without the devil. But pull rank in a Fundente tunnel and you quickly see the defect of sonorous reproductions!
If you can read this, you are too close to godhead.
Good Leary; Verrrry gooooooddddddd.......2006-07-02
Hi; welcome to all Wilson; Icke; Mckenna and Leary fans.
This book has been the first book that i have read of Tiothy Leary. I am impressed by his humor; wit and most of all the way he can see past the system that has been given to us.
I will have to look further into the phenonemon of timothy leary; like wilson and look at some more of his books.
Consciousness Beyond The Mind - The Esoteric Secret.......2004-09-25
This is valuable information, not from a guru or merely eccentric mind, no, but from a former Harvard University psychologist who subjectively and objectively and systematically tested, experimented and clinically proved that LSD and other psychedelics and their subsequent human reactions, mind interpretations and experiential conscious observations were both beneficial and related to outside the limited human mind or chessboards of values and ideas. Of course the government's are threatened by any and all such ideas that venture outside their limited schematical ideas and systems used for social structure, control and submissive subjection and therefore administer intensely unjust persecution.
But to write this information off as arbitrary and valueless is the common human response to change and growth as a human evolutionary species, a rejection that has been practiced since the beginning of time. Therefore those enlightened by such spiritual, rational/non-rational perceptive illuminations have remained relatively unspoken for many thousands of years and have paradoxically been the progenitors of all religious teachings and many political ideologies.
From chapter 8: "To use our heads, to push out beyond words, space-time categories, social identifications, models and concepts, it becomes necessary to go out of our generally rational minds. . .
Our present mental machinery cannot possibly handle the whirling, speed-of-light, trackless processes of our brain, our organ of consciousness itself. . .
We cannot study the brain, the instrument for fabricating the realities we inhabit, using the mental constructs of the past. . . "
And from Chapter 9:
"From the standpoint of established values, the psychedelic process is dangerous and insane - a deliberate pscyhotization, a suicidal undoing of the equilibrium man should be striving for. With its internal, invisible, indescribable phenomena, the psychedelic experience is incomprehensible to a rational, achievement-oriented, conformist philosophy. but to one ready to experience the exponential view of the universe, psychedelic experience is exquisitely effective preparation for the inundation of data and problems to come."
What impressed me about Leary's information is that of mental imprinting - which only occurs during infancy and/or early childhood, the period of stasis - which is basically our entire lives, and the idea of reimprinting, or breaking on through the imprinted frozen or previously impressed mind - which can occur through psychedelics.
Apparently, there is a short time period as an infant only for many species, or both infant and early childhood for humans, which then ends shortly, permanently imprinting the humans social and cultural frame of mind through linguistics for the remainder of their lives. Experiments with birds and the immediate introduction towards a human, or even a ping pong ball, causes the bird to search for this parental ideal the remainder of their lives. As humans we are subject to the attempt to the ideals that were first exposed to us in early childhood, attempting to get as close to that model for the remainder of our lives, anotherwards we all take a still snapshot on reality, forever freezing our interpretation on what otherwise is a moving transient reality.
With psychedelics, there is an opening again as in infancy and early childhood where a person can perceive the moving essence of reality outside our snapshot of imprinted mindset, our still schematic, and see the moving, multifacted reality in its many different levels, through more than one of the chakras, where one then reimprints their minds with new perceptions of reality and refocuses on previous chessboard structures, thus re-entry into society with much broader and wider perceptive capabilities with significant healing properties that are extremely beneficial.
This book is truly ahead of it's time, and of course, rejected as non-conforming to traditional paradigms and therefore considered a major threat to the comfort zones of our societal and cultural games that we take too seriously as a one and only level of reality.
Numbingly Stupid.......2003-09-19
I have a moderate amount of experience with psychedelics in authentic native religious ceremonies. I thought perhaps reading Leary would give me the white man's perspective on these experiences.
Having read this one book of Leary's, I'm not sure if the title of this review refers to the book or the reader :) Some of the history of the 1960s drug culture contained in this book was interesting. However, the interesting historical tidbits occur randomly with little clear context or relationship to the rest of the book. In fact, this volume reads not like a book but rather like so many unrelated paragraphs. Most paragraphs make some degree of sense by themselves but there is little if any connection from one paragraph to another. The book is a context-free mish-mash of history, scientific classifications of experience and art, rants against modern society, scholarly analysis of the history of science and philosophy, and personal resentments.
Perhaps I haven't re-imprinted my brain sufficiently, or perhaps I've not re-imprinted it closely enough to Leary's own re-imprinting, or perhaps I'm just dumb. Either way, I didn't get much out of this book.
Book Description
The revolutionary new program that changes brain chemistry, so you can lose weight permanently, without ever feeling hungry.
The kind of hunger that makes you gain weight is a direct result of brain chemistry messages gone awry, according to Dr. Paul Rivas, whose no-diet, no-exercise weight-loss program has been successfully tested by more than 10,000 patients. Ninety-five percent of those patients lost weight permanently with a unique program that used nutrients, supplements, and common, well-tested, doctor prescribed medications to bring their hunger and cravings under immediate control. Anyone who has ever tried unsuccessfully to achieve permanent weight loss will find out in this book why they were doomed to failure. A simple, four-part quiz helps people identify exactly which of four factors in their brain chemistry has made it impossible to achieve weight loss on any other program. (In his practice, Dr. Rivas can identify each person's inner hunger switch in just minutes with exactly these questions.)
Using simple, quick self-evaluations, readers immediately find out which correctable brain-chemistry problem is causing their hunger, cravings, and patterns of over-eating. These problems, as Dr. Rivas shows, are easy to correct, once you know what they are. He describes exactly how patients and doctors can work together, or how people can work on their own to create a weight loss program that guarantees no more hunger or feelings of deprivation.
The result is a weight-loss program that completely frees you from diets, mood swings (the kind that lead to cravings), and patterns of overeating that are rooted in brain chemistry. With the hunger switch turned off, people never have to worry about the tricks of dieting that are such a dead end -- calorie counting, fat counting, and tests of willpower that lead to the demoralizing frustration of yo-yo dieting.
Dr. Rivas's findings are now being widely accepted by a growing network of doctors who are achieving an unprecedented rate of success with thousands of their own patients.

The Best Non-Diet Ever.......2003-08-02
I, like a previous reviewer, am fortunate enough to live in Dr. Rivas's practicing area. A friend of mine had gone and lost 40 pounds, but I was skeptical of the diet pill approach. Even so, I still read the book. It was very informative and made me aware of why I was overweight, along with many realistic options to help me lose the excess weight. I was still leary of diet supplements. Then I saw Dr. Rivas on Dateline. He was responding to a barrage of criticism from doctors who are against diet pills and his techniques. Dr. Rivas replied that obesity is a disease, just like high blood pressure, high cholesterol etc and if we treat these diseases with medication, why not obesity. I had to agree, so I began in March and have since lost 35 pounds without dieting or heavy duty exercise (he doesn't recommend anything but cardio. Don't be discouraged if you don't live in his practicing area. Your doctor can help you, or this book has alternatives. For those in doubt, like I was, try it. You have nothing to lose but weight.
Excellent Source of New Information - IT WORKS!.......2003-03-10
This is the first weight-loss book I have ever read that actually provided information I did not previously know. Additionally, it focuses on the fact that we are not all the same and the same diet will not work for everyone. I 1st saw the Hunger Switch supplements in the store, then bought the book. The book is a quick & easy read and the supplements began working for me the very 1st day. It's been 3 days since I craved chocolate!!!! I love that natural alternatives are provided for every type.
Blame Your Genes - Not Yourself.......2002-12-01
Being 100 pounds overwieght for the past 20 years has been exhausting work. Finally, a program that works. This book is written so anyone can understand. Having read Dr. Rivas's book, I asked my own Doctor to help me to lose weight, utilizing the easy to understand program laid out in detail in this book. My Doctor refused to help me and advised me to go to weight watchers and stop eating so much. As luck would have it, I live where Dr. Rivas practices, so needless to say, my next stop was his office. I called for an appointment and was asked my height and weight by his staff. Upon revealing that I was 5' 8" and 310 pounds, I was advised to come in that same day, as I am dangerously obese. I transferred my recent blood tests to Dr. Rivas, which revealed cholesterol in the range of 300 and sugar levels very close to being diabetic. Meeting Dr. Rivas, he assured me he could help. First, he advised that I was not a fat, lazy, undisciplined, slob who ate too much. The problem is in the genes I inherited and a brain chemistry out of control. This is the first time anyone had made me feel like I could do something about my weight without starving myself. Well, it is now one year and 85 pounds later. My colesterol is down to 170 and sugar is well within normal. I am still losing weight, I excerise regularly, am eating well balanced meals (note: not starving), and feel better than I have for over 20 years. Thanks to Dr. Rivas helping me to reset my brain to turn off the hunger switch. Dr. Rivas saved my life!!!
Turn Off the Hunger Switch.......2002-11-22
I am and EMT and have to grab a meal whenever and whereever I can. It's not easy to get good nutrition that way. When I read this easy-to-read book and began to try to figure out my own profile, I started trying different supplements and amino acids that Dr. Rivas recommended in the book. In 4 months I lost 34 pounds and have maintained the loss for the last 5 months. The first 16 pounds were lost Without using Phentermine. I've lost from a size 18 down to a 12. Before that I had not been able to lose any weight in the past 25 years. This is the easiest thing I've tried. The hardest thing is just swallowing the vitamin and supplement pills every day and that is only discipline!
Finally, a solution that works........2002-08-17
I heard the tale end of an interview with Dr. Rivas on the radio this past Spring, enough to spark my interest anyway. The few reviews that were currently on this site indicated that the book was probably worth the read.
Even though I run regularly and try to eat a healthy diet, I have continued to gain weight for the past 8 years. I tried counting calories, increasing my weekly running mileage, group weight loss programs, etc. The scale just kept creeping up.
After reading this book I was able to determine what "type" I was and purchase the supplements recommended. Since starting on the supplements 8 weeks ago, I've lost 8 pounds. I'm eating well, but the sugar cravings and compulsive evening eating have dissappeared. I'm not "dieting," simply eating when I'm hungry and making good food choices most of the time. When I do decide to eat something decadent I don't feel complelled to eat great quantities, a little is quite satisfying these days. All of the behaviors that have sabotaged past attempts at weight loss are gone!

Highly conceptual but treatment is very misleading.......2007-09-10
The author is Psychiatrist who has great insight into dynamics of OCD. He explains in great detail about biological aspect of OCD. He accurately points out that brain signals are hoax and ignoring them is way to overcome OCD. He proposes 4 steps to do this which are based on Buddhist mindfulness. This is where the treatment is erroneous. Although most people know that OCD signals are irrational, at the peak time of OCD ritualization, the suffer can't distinguish between what is real or not. Reassuring the brain that the signal is wrong and should be ignored actually re-inforces OCD brain. The recovery comes when one accepts that the signal is valid yet refuse to do the compulsion. (Eg- Yes the door may not be locked and house will be stolen tonight but I won't check the door).
It seems schwartz treatment aspect is misleading although he may be good intentioned. He seems to have gained popularity by being a consultant to 'Aviator' movie. Again this is due to his brilliant insight into nature of disorder not the treatment aspect of it.
The best technique to overcome OCD is ERP using behavioural approach. Mindfulness works for mild OCD cases and in maintenance phases.
Good but recommended by nephew's therapist.......2007-08-24
As with a review I wrote for a purchase for my OCD nephew, I am told by my sister (his mom) that this is helping with his therapy sessions.
How do I help?.......2007-08-05
My husband read this book a year ago and found it helpful for understanding a dear relative. I'm reading the book now and found there are many insights into OCD. As well as understanding other people, I'm finding out a little about myself and how to balance out some of my own behaviors. The book is based on the behavior therapy used by professionals with adults at UCLA. There are some wonderful success stories as well as accounts of people who had extreme compulsions/obsessions. Definitely a readable classic on the subject for any layman.
Great OCD Book.......2007-01-20
Recommended by a doctor--has helped a family member tremendously. Highly recommend it for all types of OCD.
decent.......2007-01-10
The steps outlined by Schwartz are highly useful. This is not a clinical book, but certainly one with great value to the general populace.

Book Description
When we set out to describe the problems this book can help fixthe stressful and anxiety-provoking conditions of everyday livingwe quite simply ran out of space. It's no secret that life is tough, and that each passing year isn't making it any easier. Whether you're more stressed by politics, the environment, your relationships, major life changes, or just the daily task of keeping food on the table, it's easy to let life knock you down and hard to get back up again. But this book offers readers a chance at a different way of life. It shows them how to accept their lives as they are, regard the events of each day with nonjudgmental awareness, and stop obsessive thoughts from compounding their feelings of helplessness and frustration.
The first part of the book introduces you to the basics of neural network learning theory. The basic idea is that neural pathways strengthen with use and weaken with disuse. While certain events are likely to provoke a hardwired neural response in us, we are capable of creating new neural paths with no more than a thought. Instead of letting automatic triggers dictate our responses to painful events, we can use this characteristic of our nervous systems to short-circuit the responses that lead to painful thoughts and emotions.
The second part teaches you five easy-to-learn skills for dealing with stressbreath counting, thought watching, compassionate awareness, softening to pain, and wise mind. Together, they make up a set of skills that readers can take with them anywhere, a kind of portable therapy.
Once learned, the techniques in this book can be used to cope with many different situations. Combined with each other, they become a powerful tool for creating happiness, compassion, and well-being.

Making a hash of a hash.......2007-01-03
Reading this book felt like the mental equivalent of wading through a chest high lake of molasses in diver's boots (the kind that go with a canvas suit and a copper helmet). It was hard work and and ultimately pointless.
(I did read it through to the end - in the hope that "with so much fertiliser there must must be a pony!" There wasn't.)
It isn't that the book is totally devoid of good ideas, it isn't. But a few good ideas, mostly borrowed from elsewhere, don't make this book worth buying, especially when there are far better books on the same topics.
To paraphrase Dr. Johnson - the ideas herein are new and valuable.
Unfortunately, that which is of value isn't new. And that which is new is of little or no value.
Although the book is presented as offering a "new" approach to dealing with destructive emotions (well, new in 1999), the simple fact is that the "neural path therapy" approach is little more than an amalgamation of part of Albert Ellis' REBT (Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy) and what is often referred to as Breath Meditation.
Over the course of the 141 pages of the main text these two topics are reviewed over and over again - but without really adding anything of any significance to the material in the first two or three chapters other than some rather off-beat ideas on how this will affect your brain.
Like the novel idea that breathing meditation will build what the authors call "mental muscle".
It's only when you read the description on page 4 that you discover that "mental muscle" isn't about muscle building at all, it's simply learning to focus your attention on your breathing. Which any halfway decent book on meditation will explain, and probably with more clarity and less mumbo jumbo.
The fact is that you could get a lot more useful information from most if not all of Albert Ellis' books currently in print - such as "How to Keep People From Pushing Your Buttons". Whilst any beginners guide to mediatation will show you how to use breathing meditation to develop a calmer response to life's little ups and downs (and the big ones, too).
Having said that, both "Neural Path Therapy" and Ellis' books tend to concentrate on resolving symptoms rather than resolving underlying causes. This may be seen as a wise precaution - no book can reasonably claim to be sensitive to the needs of every reader, and it would be more than a little foolish to believe/claim that a book can be a satisfactory substitute for face-to-face communication with a genuinely skilled counselor/therapist.
Bottom Line: If you think this kind of material could be of use to you, please be good to yourself and check out Albert Ellis' books and David Burn's "Feeling Good" books before you think of wasting your money on this superficial a supremely underpowered waffle.
Excellent, practical, and easy to follow.......2006-04-12
This book offers simple and effective guidance on changing your thought patterns. If you are looking for a way to let go of fear, anger and anxiety caused by thoughts that seem to "take over" and keep you in a "mental maze" that gets you nowhere, the easy steps outlined in this book will help change the way you think. The authors really make it easy to learn to change from automatic "fight or flight" responses to "relax and release."
Neural Path Therapy - Simple and effective.......2005-11-14
I don't usually read self-help books. My girlfriends give them to me (implying there is something seriously wrong with me) and I read them out of respect. I find the area sometimes interesting but rarely useful. The problem, as I see it with most of these books, is that either they are so academic that you can't apply what you learn to your own life, or they are so filled with stories about "people just like you" that you spend most of your time self-diagnosing from someone else's life. Neural Path Therapy goes straight to the issues: it is one of the few therapy books that provides a useful and practical plan for the stresses in life that often overwhelm us. This is a book you can use.
Neural Path Therapy begins by explaining how our sometimes puzzling brains work, on a neurological level. When we think, when we respond to outside stimuli, we develop neural pathways: neurological routings in our brain for all those thoughts. I tried to think of this as if the brain was setting up it own postal delivery system. The thoughts/emotions had to be driven from point A to point B for delivery. The more you drive from A to B the deeper the ruts in the road get. But what if the "package" being delivered is the equivalent of a letter bomb? How many of our thoughts are unwanted: stressful thoughts, angry thoughts, depressive, disturbing thoughts, thoughts of self-doubt or ugly self-image thoughts - thoughts that undermine who you are and what you achieve. How do we stop the delivery of negative thoughts - how do we get out of those ruts we've created? The authors McKay and Harp don't try to steal you away from other methods of professional therapy or treatment you might be following, they just want to supply you with a simple, readily available tool to manage these thoughts.
The authors first help you become aware of the thoughts that act as "triggers" to emotional discomfort; they encourage you to recognize the mental pathways that engender self-destructive thinking. Through simple breathing exercises you are taught to step back and observe these thoughts, to see them as "mental objects" which are within your ability to manipulate. Then you choose how to react to these thoughts. As simple as this sounds, it is extremely effective. While the book goes into greater depth later about how to "react" when you are examining these thoughts, just getting to the point where I can see my anger, or pain, or angst as only a damaging "object" inside my mind has been extraordinarily helpful to me. The system McKay and Harp have provided in their book expects only that it be applied - like any good methodology it requires practice. I can't recommend this book strongly enough.
Neural Path Therapy by McKay.......2005-10-25
This work is a popular outgrowth of the alternative medicinal
approaches to the mind and to stress management. The authors
provide different techniques ranging from breathing control to
thought management in order to reduce stress or as an alternative
to the flight/fight phenomena. The book describes how to develop
mental muscle via guessing and imagining. The brain pathways are
dendrites which receive and transfer information to cell bodies.
Information from dendrites end up in the axon. The work encourages us to shed anger and to use breathing techniques to diffuse the point of no return. Specifically, focused mental attention can be applied to breathing exercises almost like a musician utilizes a pentameter scheme.
Superlearning by Ostrander and Schroeder describes the mechanics
of breathing exercises, as follows: (Delacorte & Confucian Press)
" The objective of this exercise is to learn to breathe in rhythm, and through rhythmic breath control, to slow down body/mind rhythms. Sit comfortably in a chair or lie down on a
couch or bed. Put yourself into a very relaxed state. Make sure all parts of your body are relaxed. Close your eyes and take a
very deep breath through your nose. Inhale as much air as you can
hold comfortably. Try to take in just a little bit more air.
Now exhale slowly. Feel a deep sense of relaxation as you exhale."
The Lozanov Institute develops these techniques as well as others. In addition, Dr. Lozanov points to "infantilization"
for adults. This process restores the ease with which a small
child learns, and a child's spontaneity, receptivity and
memorization abilities.
According to the author, pain is unfulfillment which indicates
that we are not in total control. A pyramidal structure is
provided to limit pain or flight/fight phenomena. The structure
consists of the following:
- refocus for mental muscle
- stress coping
- self-love
- compassion
- spiritual
The refocus mechanism is at the bottom of the pyramid and the
spiritual dimension is the highest form of learning.
This book provides an important enhancement to classic
psychiatric theories of the flight/fight phenomena and Freud's
concept of the Id. As such, the work translates some very
complex medical terminology into simple English for application
by ordinary people.

understanding myself.......2007-05-01
After reading Stepping Out of the Bubble a year ago, I went back and read it again for a second time. I was able to pick up even more information this time around that helped me understand and overcome some of my own internal conflicts. This is a book you can read at any point in your life and always find information that pertains to that particular moment. Krehbiel has a way of explaining things that others may consider unexplainable. Whether you are a student, a teacher, or just a guy like me, this book can and will change your life.
A practical resource for better living.......2006-03-27
For me, "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" was reminiscent of the renowned books of author, M. Scott Peck, in the style of presenting profound insights into sensible, easy-to-understand language and clear ideas an average person can relate to. Practicing Licensed Professional Counselor and Nationally Certified Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist and author of "Stepping Out Of The Bubble", James Krehbiel proficiently shares a portion of his expertise, condensing great weight into accessible and workable solutions for a more fulfilling life's plan.
The "bubble" represents our security and comfort zone, but it is also the inner place where we store the pain of our past experiences and the unpleasant reality of that not being made conscious which keeps us bound in unhealthy and self-defeating patterns. Staying within this bubble limits our emotional responsiveness as we numb ourselves to the coexistence even as unresolved issues unconsciously filter forth. To step outside of the bubble is to courageously examine the contents in all honesty and to face life's reality outside of the bubble. Once outside the bubble, one can move forward to experience life in more emotional depth, fullness and passion. "Being a fully functioning individual is about being true to whom you are and letting things be the way they are," explains author, James Krehbiel.
With brilliant and compassionate understanding, Mr. Krehbiel briefly details methods used and pertinent case examples within his therapy practice. "Self-regulation is a goal of therapy. I educate people in the fact that all the answers are ultimately within." "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" strives to do the same, by giving information on how we become trapped in the bubble and how beneficial the making of conscious choices to leave, can be.
Some of the many topics included within this book are: being assertive, characteristics of an "authentic" person, the integration of each of our different personality parts, the difference between true guilt and false guilt, setting boundaries, addictions and addictions to "manic" relationships, awareness (staying in the moment or mindfulness), grounding, honoring one's inner voice, panic attacks, OCD and mood disorders. The section regarding kids and parenting was exceptional, in my opinion, and I found many points about discipline that made much sense. Also appreciated was the section relating to religion (dogma) versus faith (spiritual) as well as what needed to be said about pop culture.
I enjoyed reading "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" and would recommend it to anyone. It is enriching and inspirational.

Stepping Out Of The Bubble by James P. Krehbiel, Is an outstanding book on Counseling Therapy. Krehbiel, is able to put life patterns and fears into perspective so that the lay person can fully understand the mystery that most think is behind counseling. His approach to show that so much of what we seek answers for is within ourselves and with the right counsellor we can become free and step out of the Bubble or Bubbles that a lot of us are in.
This book should be a gift to every teen and their parents, no home should be without it.
Gaining Courage to Live Outside of the Bubble.......2006-02-25
James P. Krehbiel's Stepping Out of the Bubble was a fascinating read. I found myself underlining various passages. His explanation of how we get stuck in the bubble (comfort zone), and how we find our way out is powerful. It provided me with hope as I move through my own personal journey. I found myself experiencing an emotional reaction to many of the case examples and concepts he explored. He definitely hit some "hot buttons" in my life. But Mr. Krehbiel also provided specific guidelines and tools for stepping out of the bubble. At one point he says, "Courage can be defined by those who live outside the bubble as opposed to those who live in it. I like to compare stepping out of the bubble to wading into the water."
His chapter which includes ideas on multidimensional thinking is appropriate in today's political climate. He indicates that true dialogue takes into consideration the appreciation for differences in opinions. He makes some profound statements about pop culture's affect on the lives of today's children. He also gives parents tools and resources for assisting their children in bettering their behavior. The book ends with a resounding "yes" to life with a hopeful, powerful way of perceiving and reframing life's problems. This was an excellent book!
My Review of a Great Book.......2006-02-23
"Stepping Out of the Bubble : Reflections On the Pilgrimage of Counseling Therapy by James P. Krehbiel is an amazing and outstanding book that provides help and direction to the many people that are suffering from problems described in this book.
I was amazed at how many of the problems and challenges, that the author writes about, are problems and challenges I have seen many people suffer with.
The counseling theory and practice information in this book provides a direction for people that have a problem and are willing to go to counseling and risk moving forward in their journey toward finding personal growth and development, and eventually stepping out of the bubble.
Many people have problems and challenges that they never seek help for and they and their loved ones continue to suffer. This book goes a long way in bringing the thought of counseling to people and helping people to better understand the counseling process.
To author James P. Krehbiel thank you for writing your great book. I am convinced your book will help many people and because of your book many more people will step out of the bubble. I recommend this book very highly and also feel it would be a great college text.

This book is great!.......2006-06-27
This book has really helped me. If you are trying to lose weight, I think this may be a "jump start your diet" kind of book. My husband brought home my favorites from Starbucks. A banana cream frappachino and two tofee bars. He put it in front of me and I said no. Not because I wated it and just wanted to stay on my diet. I just really didn't want it! That is a first for me. I do believe this book has given me confidence in sticking to a diet program. I would recommend it for anyone who is seriously considering losing weight.
