Book Description

Would you like to save yourself the indignity, inconvenience and foul taste of modern diet fads? Are you sick and tired of frittering away your money on heart medications that leave you feeling more wretched than ever? Do you spend frequent, precious hours jogging or pounding away at the gym? And despite all of this effort, are you still fatter and weaker than you want to be?

Then it's time to abandon the Modern Gospel of low-fat food and long-duration exercise as a path to heart health. We need the very opposite, says Al Sears, M.D. in The Doctor's Heart Cure. According to Dr. Sears, heart disease continues to be America's biggest killer - and obesity has reached epidemic proportions - because of the fad for low-fat diets and despite aerobics.

Your heart's salvation lies in reengineering the diet and exercise habits of our hunter-gatherer ancestors to fit our modern culture. What does this entail? To build a strong and resilient heart, says Dr. Sears, engage in brief, explosive bouts of intense exercise. Consume a diet rich in high quality fat, pasture-fed meat, free-range dairy, wild-caught fish and liberal helpings of low-glycemic fruits and vegetables. Avoid grain-based starches as best you can. And take appropriate supplements to counteract the nutritional deficiencies of modern produce.

As Director of The Center for Health and Wellness, an integrative medicine and anti-aging clinic in south Florida, Dr. Sears has used this plan to help more than 15,000 patients successfully reverse heart disease, build stronger hearts, manage their weight and abandon their heart medications. In The Doctor's Heart Cure, for the first time, Dr. Sears reveals his entire, proven program, so you too can safely build an impregnable heart.

This book providers the information the reader needs to know.Backed up with footnotes. It definately has a possitive impact.

4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-06-21

This book talks about some of our more important concerns: our health, our food and our lives. I'm used to read and think about what I read, to compare it with other sources. Dr. Al Sears has made a great job by showing lots of researchs to add to the credibility of his words. I'm slowing modifying my habits, so that I can follow his advices.

5 out of 5 stars PACE yourself.......2007-06-13

I found this book engrossing and what Dr. Sears has to say is very useful and practical. I am trying to use the PACE exercise program with some success although I am uncertain about the fat burning as I sleep. His food diet is just good sense and backed up by many health "authorities", so I think this book from cover to cover is a winner.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Book for Beginners.......2007-05-13

I did not learn anything that I didn't already know from this book. I am, however, one who is involved with continuous nutritional tune-ups and physical fitness. The advice and techniques are similar to those that
body builders already use. As I said in my title, this is a good starter book.

3 out of 5 stars Satisfied.......2007-05-06

The book was very informative. However, with all the health and diet books I have read, they all seem to be similiar in many of the subjects. I just have to siphen out the parts that I believe and try to apply them in my daily life. It was very well written but like all books, you cant agree with everything. I was satisfied but not overwelmed. Thanks.

2 out of 5 stars The "Conspiracy": The World's Worst Kept Secret.......2006-07-23

THE CURE CONSPIRACY by Gayle K. Wood suggests via its title that it is anti-traditional medical science and pro natural remedies, sort of like a scaled down version of Kevin Trudeau's iconoclastic NATURAL CURES "THEY" DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW. This book is nothing of the sort. It strictly follows the FDA and AMA party line of accepted treatments. About the most "natural" remedies that Wood endorses is drink lots of water and herbal tea, do yoga, and have hypnosis for pain. The so-called other "natural" cures Woods frowns on--DHEA, Guggul for cholesterol control, and chelation therapy--she relegates to quackery. Conversely, other "natural" cures she endorses--Botox, Dairy for weight loss, and magnets for osteoarthritis--are now increasingly seen as useless at best and harmful at worst by naturopaths and herbalists.

For those who truly wish to learn of alternative therapies that the FDA, FTC, and AMA look down on but have been endorsed by generations of practitioners and users who are not in bed with Big Business will have to look elsewhere.

When an entire society is told that thinner is better and studies everywhere agree diets don't work, it's time to take a look at the assumptions behind the messages. For better or worse, this happens in Paul Campos' (Jurismania) book The Obesity Myth. Packed full of lengthy discussions of popular studies (particularly the Harvard nurses study), dense chapters run through statistics and conclusions at a breathtaking pace. Campos regularly insists on two points: BMI is basically meaningless, and a variety of media-based sources are contributing to an enormous industry that blends oversized portions with trendy, potentially harmful, diets. He grabs attention to the first claim with early assertions that by BMI standards, Brad Pitt is overweight and George Clooney is obese; more detailed discussion covers how insurance companies developed the BMI tables in their earliest forms and the federal government later tinkered with measurements in a way that accounts for much of the sudden "explosion" in obesity (yes, a BMI chart is included at the end of the book). Repeatedly, Campos rails against media stars whose main qualification is their leanness, questions medical conclusions, and demands that we look at weight as a class issue. Also highlighted is the idea of the diet industry being an extremely powerful political force, which may be at the root of the controversy; the hollering about his sources is likely to be louder than the comments about his accuracy in assessing those sources. As with any highly inflammatory topic, a single book presents only a part of the whole picture--but the myth-busting opinions offered here are an important part of the weight-based discussions. --Jill Lightner

Book Description

“Campos makes his case against the “fat kills” dogma with unimpeachable evidence. The Obesity Myth should be required reading for every health professional in America. I believe any open-minded person who reads this book will conclude that we've been duped by a pack of self-serving lies. And we cannot get at the truth without first recognizing those lies. The Obesity Myth is a great place to start.” —Glenn A. Gaesser, Ph.D., professor and director, Kinesiology Program, University of Virginia

Is your weight hazardous to your health? According to public-health authorities, 65 percent of us are overweight. Every day, we are bombarded with dire warnings about America's “obesity epidemic.” Close to half of the adult population is dieting, obsessed with achieving an arbitrary “ideal weight.” Yet studies show that a moderately active larger person is likely to be far healthier (and to live longer) than someone who is thin but sedentary. And contrary to what the fifty-billion-dollar-per-year weight-loss industry would have us believe medical science has not yet come up with a way to make people thin.

After years spent scrutinizing medical studies and interviewing leading doctors, scientists, eating- disorder specialists, and psychiatrists, Professor Paul Campos is here to lead the backlash against weight hysteria—and to show that we can safeguard our health without obsessing about the numbers on the scale. But The Obesity Myth is not just a compelling argument, grounded in the latest scientific research; it's also a provocative, wry exposé of the culture that feeds on our self-defeating war on fat. Campos will show:

* How the nation's most prestigious and trusted media sources consistently misinform the public about obesity
* What the movie industry's love affair with the “fat suit” tells us about the relationship between racial- and body-based prejudice in America
* How the skinny elite—with their “supersized” lifestyles and gas-guzzling SUVs—project their anxieties about overconsumption on the poorer and heavier underclass
* How weight-loss mania fueled the impeachment of Bill Clinton

In this paradigm-busting read, Professor Campos challenges the conventional wisdom regarding the medical, political, and cultural meaning of weight and brings a rational and compelling new voice to America's increasingly irrational weight debate.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding job, Dr. Campos!.......2007-09-19

The "War on Obesity" is actually an attack on fat and fat people. Thank heavens for Paul Campos who clearly and precisely lays out the argument against continuing to fight this war, and the reasons why it was a bad idea to begin with. Is it any coincidence that Americans are fatter than ever and they are also dieting more than ever? I think not.

As a fat aerobics instructor and personal trainer, and as an activist in the movement toward fat acceptance, I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars the diet industry's reality check.......2007-06-19

I had first heard of this book a few years back,
but never got around to reading it until last
night. This book completely changed my view
of my body, the diet industry, and America in
general.

The best parts of the book talk about how the diet
industry plays on people's insecurities, in order
to make money. Does the pharmaceutical companies
really care about the average American? No.

Unlike most diet commercials and products, Campos
uses hard-hitting facts to hammer home his main
point: that by yo-yo dieting, Americans are playing
a dangerous game with their bodies.

Kudos to Campos for destroying the stereotypical
notion that fat people cannot be fit. The correlation
between Bill Clinton, weight, and his impeachment
is also very, very interesting.

This book is recommended for anyone, fat or thin, who
is ready to make peace with their bodies and tired
of buying the hype that fuels the diet industry.

4 out of 5 stars Tells it Like it Is.......2007-06-17

If you want to see how the government and doctors and others are trying to convince us how the majority of us are killing ourselves with fat, read this book.

Fat fit people are healthier than skinny unfit people.

Read the book and learn more.

5 out of 5 stars They have been lying to us again........2006-05-09

This is a very interesting book. It is not a book that will tell you how to become a normal eater, although it is obvious that he not only knows about normal eating trends, but approves of them. The book is mainly about how the diet industry has been lying to us about the obesity research out there, and how 95% or more of all diets result in people not just gaining it all back, mostly very quickly, but gaining back more than they lost in the first place. He also says that the height/weight charts are not reasonable and that the whole BMI thing is a fraud.

His main focus is that a person who is overweight, or even obese, is not necessarily unhealthy. If they are active physically, they can be more healthy than someone who is very thin and sedentary. He also thinks that the point where the height/weight charts say a person is overweight, and the second place where they are supposed to be obese, are set way too low.

And then he had to admit he had been losing weight the whole time he was writing, and that it ended up being a substantial amount of weight. He knows that part of it was that he began running in races, so he was training for competition for the first time in his life. I think he also began normal eating techniques, and what he calls healthy eating. Not a weight loss diet, but a diet for health that most people would not lose weight on.

Most of the normal eating books go into some of the material in this book in an attempt to explain why we need to give diets up, but they don't have the room for it in this detail. He after all, used 250 pages to tell his story.

5 out of 5 stars Eye Opening.......2006-03-22

This book made me think in a whole new way about todays culture. I didn't agree with every thing in it but it made me open my eyes to so much that I think it is a must read for anyone no matter what their size.

Book Description

A safe, effective, and revolutionary program for lowering homocysteine levels and cutting your risk of heart disease

In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Kilmer S. McCully explains what is really behind the epidemic of heart disease. For many years, clogged arteries have been inaccurately viewed as the cause, rather than a symptom, of heart disease. Now, McCully shows you how to cut your risk of heart disease by controlling the real culprit, homocysteine. Considered one of the most significant medical breakthroughs in recent years, McCully's findings have been validated by numerous large-scale studies. The Heart Revolution:

Eat Your Way to a Healthy Heart

Pork Chops with Potatoes and Onions, Veal with Wine and Mushrooms, Guacamole, Omelettes. This is not your typical diet program. Dr. McCully offers real food choices with fresh ingredients available just about everywhere. The focus is on delicious foods that will leave you satisfied. The purpose is to make sure you're getting enough of the vitamins needed to prevent heart disease—B6, B12, and folic acid, as well as essential, phytochemicals, fat-soluble vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and essential oils. It's easy to follow this plan as it relies on foods you want to eat with little preparation time and tons of variety.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A MUST READ !.......2006-11-07

This book is a must read for anyone concerned about his/her cholesterol level.......especially if your medical professionals are solely focussed on lowering them as the only rational strategy for good health. Kilmer McCully does a great job of adding balance to the medical community's current enslavement to the cholesterol=heart disease theory, and in the process demonstrates again how the world of science tends to banish those whose breakthrough insights don't fit the mainstream mold. Fortunately for us all, McCully's insights about the role of inflammation in heart disease are finally being more fairly considered by the
medical establishment.

4 out of 5 stars Important Information About Treatment for Heart Disease.......2005-11-30

The book logically presents information suggesting that there is a simple preventative treatment for heart disease. The author writes to the lay person, explaining the lack of information supporting the status quo - the supposedly heart-healthy low fat diet - and supporting his homocysteine hypothesis. The only short-coming of the book is in the final chapters, where the author over reaches the information presented and suggests control of homocysteine levels may be a cure all for a wide variety of conditions, including alzheimers and cancer.

4 out of 5 stars Still reading.......2005-05-25

I just received my book and have yet to read more than 30 pages. So far, I find the material interesting and the arguments convincing. More than anything, I wanted to comment on the review by "a reader"...and his or her suggestion that readers would be better off skipping the book and instead seek established medical advice. Just go to quackwatch.com, well known debunker of less than scientific studies and bogus health and nutrition theories, and read how much credence they give to the same ideas espoused in this book. I would add, who better to present the medical evidence than McCully himself, who in 1969, first described the vascular pathology [of heart disease] as it relates to homocysteine levels?

2 out of 5 stars Not Worth The Money.......2004-03-15

This book does a disservice for those who really want helpful information about diet.. Dr. McCully did not do himself any favors by allowing his daughter, Martha, a Fashion Magazine Beauty writer to co-author it.. just very badly written.. and it undermines his medical crediblity..

Don't waste your time or money.. if you need advice.. go to a reputable medical web site....

5 out of 5 stars Heart-health without cholesterol fear -a best read!.......2004-01-03

This book gives easy, doable and simple prevention solutions to heart disease, including increasing B vitamins that lower a natural blood-vessel toxin we all -without exception- make, homocysteine.

Dr. McCully discovered the vital role of this molecule in heart disease [now with roles in over 100 diseases] but his insistence that it is NOT cholesterol or fat that cause bad arteries got him fired from and black listed and disgraced by Harvard University, in 1978 -only to be re-offered a professorship 25 years later [he graciously accepted].

Four new studies about homocysteine now appear daily and a Nobel Prize for single handedly discovering, proving and popularizing such toxic player and risk-factor in health should be in the works.. He now shares that life-long body of wisdom with the public. The good news is that ANYONE can lower his/her homocysteine with a high strength multi-B vitamin pill, the only therapy. Easy to read and well edited, this is the FIRST book you should read, and as a bonus, it will make you feel better about cholesterol.

Heh, any heart-health book with a high nutrient but high cholesterol recipe for chicken-liver spread with egg and butter deserves notice. Not only that -McCully was as right then as he is now, it is a lack of micronutrients that is so dangerous, and this includes omega-3 oil and the '"B" healthy' B vitamins.

This book is as vital for your doctor or cardiologist and buying them a copy too may be one of the smartest things you could do. Their life is a hard one with the drug-interests dominating much of the landscape. They should appreciate scientifically sound data about non-toxic non-drug nutritional prevention options, and it is here that Dr. McCully filled in much of the puzzle picture.

I add my voice to the very first reviewer, Dr. Willett, Chair of Harvard's Nutrition Department, in warmly recommending this important yet easy to read book, Eddie Vos Sutton Qc Canada www.health-heart.org E-mail: vos@health-heart.org

A very well written book on a topic heatedly (or so it seems) debated about today. Truly an eye-opener to those who are staunchly against legalization, or at least decriminalization of cannibis. Presents facts, cites them accordingly, and does so in an efficient yet pleasurable to read fashion. All in all, a very good read and an effective piece of propaganda in this unnecessary schism in our United States culture.

P.S. I actually chuckled to myself as i read this; about:
A) How the government misconstrues almost all information received by the public on this topic,
B) How absurd it is that a piece of foliage has such incredibly repercussions for simply possessing it, and,
C) How ignorant certain people are towards the substance, when they have never experienced its effects (i believe you have to try something at least once before you condemn it).

5 out of 5 stars SUPER AWESOME.......2007-05-17

It was a good read, everything is sourced well and legit. I have been passin it around to people (including parents) to read and they have enjoyed it as well. I highly recommend it for those involved with drug counseling and such to get your facts straight. I can debate with sourced proof!

Brilliant, a fantastic factual presentation of what marijuana is and its affects on the human species.

5 out of 5 stars MMMF - Review of Scientific Evidence.......2006-08-11

Book in great shape! Very enlightening how society is continually being duped by those in power with money. Scientific methodology can reproduced - that is its strength. Industries do not want marijuana legalized for it will impact profit margins. The reason the whole "marijuana is a Schedule A" drug like heroin is totally false. This book proves by scientific method and dispels all of the wild myths about marijuana. Look out textile industry!

5 out of 5 stars No more lies.......2006-08-05

An excelent quick reference book. Quickly kills the old myths about cannabis, without all the mumbo jumbo of a overly complicated research book.

Review: The Cholesterol Myths : Exposing the Fallacy that Saturated Fat and Cholesterol Cause Heart Disease

Others have already submitted excellent reviews for The Cholesterol Myths by Uffe Ravnskov, so I'll refrain from covering ground that they've already covered so well. In particular, please read the reviews submitted by Joel Kauffman and Stephen Byrnes; those reviews should give you a good sense of what to expect if you're considering this book.

I see that Amazon is not carrying this book presently, but I hope that is a temporary condition. Despite its having been published in 2000, it's still worthy of continued readership and we should hope that demand will be sufficient to induce Amazon to offer it again soon. On the other hand, perhaps an updated version is imminent and that explains its unavailability at the moment. Inasmuch as a bit of the intellectual terrain covered by the book has evolved over the last several years, it would be nice to see that reflected in an updated version.

A few comments regarding the author's integrity and intellectual standards are in order. I've seen his motives and scholarship impugned, and I've seen him charged with bias; but anyone who's read this book with an open mind would surely have to acquit him of such charges. His own work, based on what he's written in this book as well as the care with which he makes his case stands as a potent and vigorous defense: he amply demonstrates both his command of the relevant data and his commitment to seeking truth. Just because he has a point of view doesn't ipso facto make him biased. Only to the extent that he clings to his position in the face of convincing countervailing evidence can one legitimately make the charge of bias stick.

The fact of the matter is that he has meticulously examined the evidence supporting the purported causative link between cholesterol and heart disease and found it wanting. If anything, the charge of bias may more convincingly be directed at his critics. What he says on page 6 of the book is instructive in that regard: "True scientists put the solution to a medical problem first and not the preservation of their own hypothesis, no matter how clever the hypothesis may seem or how proud of themselves they may be for creating it." In view of the many holes in the cholesterol hypothesis, one can't help but question whether those still slavishly devoted to it are truly acting in the best scientific tradition, i.e., pursuing truth by strict adherence to scientific methods and standards.

Finally, I can't resist sharing the Epilogue from the book:

"After a lecture, a journalist asked me how she could be certain that my information was not just as biased as that of the cholesterol campaign. At first I did not know what to say. Afterwards I found the answer.

"She could not be certain. Everyone must gain the truth in an active way. If you want to know something you must look at all the premises yourself, listen to all the arguments yourself, and then decide for yourself what seems to be the most likely answer. You may be easily led astray if you ask the authorities to do this work for you.

"This is also the answer to those who wonder why even honest scientists are misled. And it is also the answer to those who, after reading this book, ask the same question."

This is a man who makes a strong case, but in the end exhorts the reader to think for himself. Revealing, and it struck me as refreshing in a world where there is no shortage of "authorities" who are all too ready to do our thinking for us.

Slight addendum:

As I mentioned, there are a number of very good, well written and positive reviews of this book here at Amazon. But reading the unfavorable reviews is useful as well, albeit there aren't very many of them. You'll note that most of them are vacuous and without merit, and therefore easily rejected. But even so, those and even the ones that seemingly have a bit more "meat" to them are ultimately likely to increase one's appreciation of this book if viewed in conjunction with the comments they've stimulated. (Note: I couldn't refrain from offering comments of my own in response to Erika Mitchell's "A Grain of Salt" 2-star review of November 17, 2005.)

5 out of 5 stars Cholesterol fallacy exposed.......2007-04-11

Intelligent, scholarly, and earth shaking. Dr. Ravnskov, MD, PhD, impressively presents a vast body of evidence that debunks the decades long programming by the pharmaceutical corporations that cholesterol is the cause of heart disease. Dr. Ravnskov's work is a clarion call to all doctors, nutritionists, and patients to read this book before you take any statin drug.

5 out of 5 stars Uncover your eyes (and your mouth).......2007-03-08

Dr. Ravnskov exposes the many methodological, epistemological, analytical and statistical errors abounding in many of the studies that have been hyped as final evidence of the Lipid Hypothesis.

As Dr. Ravnskov correctly says, "if a scientific hypothesis is sound, it must agree with all observations. A hypothesis is not like a sports event, where the team with the greatest number of points wins the game. Even one observation that does not support a hypothesis is enough to disprove it. The proponents of a scientific idea have the burden of proof on their shoulders. The opponent does not have an alternative idea; his task is only to find the weaknesses in the hypothesis."

Contrary to what the prevalent idea in the popular mind and the media, Medicine is not an exact science, and is very far from being one. Medicine deals with human phenomena, and human phenomena are of those scientists call complex (in fact, extremely complex), which means that any single phenomenon is affected by so many factors, that it is extremely difficult to isolate any one variable in the laboratory. This is further complicated by the fact that in dealing with the health of human beings, there are ethical issues involved, thus severely limiting the researcher's scope for experimentation.

In every science, even Physical and other Natural sciences, there is no such thing as a matter settled once and for all. Even in Physical sciences, where the possibility of isolating variables in experimentation is much more available to the researcher than in any science dealing with human phenomena, there is always the possibility that a theory that has been corroborated again and again is refuted in the future. Indeed, it happened to Newton's Law of Gravity! And still they pretend to tell you that issues such as the cholesterol controversy, dealing with a very complex phenomenon like CHD (Coronary Heart Disease), is a scientifically settled issue? Come on!

So whenever someone says to you that the cholesterol controversy is scientifically settled beyond any reasonable doubt, either he is plainly lying, or he is just a completely ignorant person who has no idea whatsoever about what science is.

After reading this book, your perspective about cholesterol will be much challenged.

On a diet of organic meat and organic veggies.
Please be kind to yourself and read " The China Study " or read only the reviews if you are too busy. Make up your mind now or tomorrow , but decide by yourself. Remember that in the US Big food is an 800 billion dollars and Medical Care is a 1 trillion seven hundreed billion dollars business a year.
Every year more than 700 000 Americans will die early from heart disease, something that could had be prevented an even reversed ( see the works of Dean Ornish and Colin Campbell )
Good luck !!

5 out of 5 stars Oughta Be Required Reading ;).......2007-02-10

Wow; what an eye-opener! This book should be required reading for EVERY American. Chapter by chapter, Ravnskov systematically proves that the government, major medical organizations (like the American Heart Association), and the media have been lying to the public for years regarding the "danger" of cholesterol. There is no proof that saturated fat raises blood cholesterol levels. There is no proof that dietary cholesterol raises blood cholesterol levels. There is no proof that high blood cholesterol contributes to heart disease. Don't believe me? Read the book! Data don't lie, but scientists do. In study after study, the results were warped, portions conveniently omitted, and/or summaries just plain invented to convince readers of what the scientists WANTED to see. (A quick comparison of the graphs on pages 73 and 79 will clearly illustrate this data manipulation.) If you really care about your health, you owe it to yourself to read this book.

The person who gave this book a bad review is a MORON!. This is the best and only diet you will ever need to follow!

4 out of 5 stars Metabolic diet.......2006-01-04

This book is Fantastic (with a capital F).
I am a female bodybuilder and trainer who just loves this book, and use it for all my clients. My husband swears by it. Going through the carb phase is the best part.

Over a three month period my husband gained 20 lbs of muscle and lost 15 lbs of fat. Overall he lost only 5 lbs but he's more muscular and much leaner.

The good Dr has also put out an Anabolic Solution for bodybuilders that is amazing. If you are looking for someone to hold your hand while training and dieting, this book won't do it for you. It will give you all the guidelines and stamina that you need to do it alone.

We had the pleasure of meeting DR Di Pasquale just over a year ago. He is so nice (and he does exist). I find with some of men and women I meet who actually think they are bodybuilders eat a lot of garbage food, and when it comes down to it, they don't know how to train or diet properly. I can tell you this much, if you buy this book, you won't be disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars bodybuilders stay away.......2005-03-03

I'm surprised that there are no reviews. I'm into weight training and I'm old. I've got Dr. D's video on the anabolic diet, I have both the digital first anabolic diet followed by the anabolic diet for bodybuilders and now this book. Yes I spend money. Did it help me? Yes and no. It gave me an introduction to cycling diets, it has diet plans, and charts for fat, protein and carb ratios in food. And I got some success with the plan but I couldn't take it. Going from near ketogenic (or ketogenic) to carbing up is awful. When you carb up, its like being in a haze, really nasty at times. I'd rather stay in ketosis then be bouncing back and forth. He writes well but most of the time I felt like he talks down to the reader. I had no idea that the human body thinks or realizes instead of reacting, when writers give sentience to body functions I get the feeling that I am being talked down to, but then again, he is after all, a doctor. Did I mention that he talks down to the reader. Finally, on the negative side, he's flogging his own brand of supplements, it was to be expected since he did it in his digital anabolic bodybuilder's diet. That's nice Dr D, just leave the website address, I'll drop by if I win the lottery. I would have saved myself alot of time and nausea if I'd just bought Dan Duchaine's Body Opus and Lyle Macdonald's Ultimate diet 2, which I finally did (here at amazon.....am I flogging!). Yes Dan's body opus diet is ketogenic, but he explains alot, he talks about the supplements you need minus the commericals. Lyle's book shifts things around a little and takes you out of the need for ketosis if you are trying to cut down, and both of them spend alot on glycogen supercompensation which believe it or not made alot of sense to me, which Dr. D didn't focus on at all. Considering that Dan's book must have been pivotal when it came out, a sort of tell all for those that aren't in the incrowd of the muscle dysmorphia gang, you wouldn't even know he ever existed from Dr. D. Perhaps its Dan's stance on roids. In fact when he reviews the various diets out there he doesn't even mention Macdonald either. Perhaps its the fact that they didn't jump hoops at University and get the awe inspiring credentials. So if you're a bodybuilder stay away, but if you're fat with a capital F then this might be for you.

Book Description

Reclaiming Our Health is best-selling author John Robbins biggest and most important book to date. Elaborately researched and fluidly written, Reclaiming Our Health is a provocative and crystal-clear commentary on one of the most complex issues facing America todaynational health care. In an epic look at the human and financial consequences of the polarization of traditional and alternative medicine, John Robbins calls for nothing short of a revolution in the basic beliefs on which traditional health care is provided.

Robbins has written a masterpiece that will be as popular with people unhappy with the medical establishment as Diet for a New America is with critics of the meat industry. Although we spend $1 trillion each year on health care, the toll in human suffering from degenerative disease continues to rise and many in our country cannot afford basic health care. Meanwhile, women are growing increasingly frustrated with the care they receive from a male-dominated system; and the incidence of dangerous communicable diseases is growing.

There are answers to these problems and the myriad others that we face, but the dogmatic and monopolistic beliefs held by modern medicine are preventing us from finding the. Reclaiming Our Health presents a brilliant, refreshing, and uplifting new vision of what health care might be.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Heartbreaking Look at Modern Medicine.......2007-08-21

I have been a "health nut" for years and wary of the medical establishment, but I always hoped that the mainstream approaches, though ineffective, were a result of ignorance or narrow mindedness.

In Reclaiming Our Health, John Robbins has exposed the greed and pride of a male-dominated medical community in bed with the pharmaceutical companies. Reading about the witch hunts (past and present) against alternative healing practices outrages me, but what hurts more is reading how modern medicine treats its patients. People, at their most vulnerable times, are trampled upon by doctors and nurses.

The section on how medicine has historically regarded women is eye opening (or would be if you had never dealt with a male obstetrician). Having just given birth to my son, accompanied by a midwife, and knowing what an amazing and challenging time that can be, I almost cried reading the horror stories of children's births.

John Robbins has written a phenomenal book. And as always, he has brought his caring, compassionate passion to an issue that is literally crippling our nation. Thank you, John.

5 out of 5 stars I thoroughly recommend this book.......2003-09-08

I read this book first in sections, but then decided to read the whole thing as my interest progressed.

I already knew some of the persecution of the chiropractic industry by money-hungry conventional doctors, but some of the stuff totally shocked me. I've seen some of the statistics that chiropractors have come up with, extensive studies that show that it has extremely low health risks and helps a lot more with lower back pain than conventional "give me the pill" medicine. However, this book totally blew the cover off the...American Medical Association, an organization I once took for granted to be dedicated to my health and well-being.

If everyone in the waiting room of a doctor's clinic were to read this book, all health care in America would be for the better.

Furthermore, the interesting sections on women and fertility totally blew me away. I was furious at the stuff they were doing to hurt and control women who went to doctors for real health reasons, hoping to get better, only to be subjected to the standard system of running tests and being tied to one position. I myself was delivered by C-section, and having been abandoned by my mother, I can also attest to the ugly and disgusting nature of conventional birth documented so well by John Robbins. The persecution of midwives, who have near-flawless records for safe delivery of newborn babies was also shocking. I had no idea that women giving birth at home do better than in hospitals, in terms of mortality rates.

The final section is worth reading alone if you have cancer. It states very clearly using facts and actual experiences how deliberately and unfortunately the medical establishment has been "treating" people (if I may use that word) with cancer, without realizing that the only goal of a person with illness is wellness and wholeness, not merely to eradicate and destroy an organism that seems foreign and toxic. It also exposes the "fact" that there have been cancer treatments with possible cures, existing for decades, which have been blocked by the cancer establishment out of hope for conventional therapies, blind ignorance, or fear of malpractice suits (you can be sued for not using "technology" to treat an illness ... but what if you just want to get better?).

The beauty of John Robbins' words inspire me. It's hard not to be moved by good stories of good doctors helping to make things better. It's hard not to believe that things could also be better if we changed our current system. Always true to form, this book discusses ways in which to reform health care that would truly work, and at minimal cost.

If you're a nonbeliever of universal health care, low-cost medicine, or just out of luck with personal illness, I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Read This Book BEFORE You or Someone You Love Becomes Ill.......2003-08-28

Over the past thirty years I have read about 100 books on the subject of health. Among the very best of the books I have read are two of John Robbins' other books, Diet for a New America and The Food Revolution, but I don't feel the need to review these remarkable books; they have been well reviewed by others, and I recommend you check them both out in Amazon. However, I simply had to add my voice to the reviews of Reclaiming Our Health.

This book is predominantly about the medical establishment, what has gone wrong with it, and what you can do to protect yourself and your loved ones (if you can get them to listen to you). It is not a condemnation of all things conventional nor an endorsement of all things alternative. Some of the greatest heroes of the book are M.D.'s practicing both conventional and alternative therapies. This book seeks to guide us to the best of both worlds while warning us about the dangers to be found in each. However, the worst dangers by far appear to be in the conventional medical establishment where the admonition "first, do no harm" seems to have been long forgotten.

This book made me cry. This book infuriated me. It is filled with one outrage after another. But wouldn't you rather read about them than be subjected to them (or watch your loved ones be subjected to them) by not being informed beforehand? I know I would.

This is one of those rare books that is truly empowering. That's what John Robbins does so well. He does the intensive research that most of us neither would nor could do. We are blessed by his enormous contribution to mankind.

And my fellow women, you will be shocked to read some of the material in this book on how women have been treated in society and how this has influenced the way we have been treated by much of the medical community. I have shared a bit of the information with co-workers and have actually seen jaws drop open. We have not been told the complete story of how dreadfully many women have been treated in our history. It is an abomination. (Written with apologies to all of the sincerely wonderful men out there.)

Rest assured that among the very bad news of this book is a good deal of hopeful news about prevention and treatments that are out there now, but this information will probably be a long time coming to the general public. It is only through leaders like John Robbins that we are blessed to know about it now.

Read this book before you or someone you love becomes ill. Read it and pass it on.

5 out of 5 stars 10 stars Articulate accurate and timely.......2003-04-20

Since I own and have read other books the author has written I was curious to see what he would share in this book on a subject that is so important to me and many Americans. And he certainly hasn't let me down.

The parts or chapters I liked so much and thank the author for, from the bottom of my heart are Part Two where he goes into great detail about the patriarchal medical system. It is worth the price of the book alone. I also like Part Three where he starts out with a quote from a signer of the Declaration of Independence (Dr Benjamin Rush) who said "Unless we put medical freedom into the Constitution, the time will come when medicine will organize itself into an undercover dictatorship". And he offers so much documentation of where and how the big boys of the AMA (American Medical Association) have even gone after their own members who dared not walk the party line. On page 185 he shares how from homeopaths, to midwives, and other nontraditional medical forms, the AMA has been the bully boys who wanted their monopoly and none others. On page 1996 onward he describes once again how the feminine professions which nursing was up until the 1970's, were main targets of the male member run AMA.

Now I was aware that one way the male physicians made midwifery which had been the norm well into the 1900's, illegal was to accuse the women delivering babies of being everything from witches, pagans and even communists. Yet delivering babies in the safe and secure environment had been good enough for Moses, Jesus, George Washington and most heroes and heroines but because the AMA had discovered there was big buck in babies they did everything in their power to make their way the only way to deliver babies and feather their nest along the way. And as the author notes on page 322 that while birthing centers and midwives are persecuted by the AMA the actual cesarean rate here in the United States is outrageous and is a procedure that the rest of the civilized world shuns.

On page 327 onward the author skillfully lays out documentation that shows that many of the plagues the world has suffered have not been cured by AMA style medicine but by common sense approaches like clean water and sanitary toilet system. Washing hands and handling food in a clean manner. And that malaria is kept at bay with more preventive means than medical ones.

I could go on, but I would prefer that you buy the book and if possible buy a copy for your local library if it does not have a copy. That is how important this book is.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this book..........2002-12-20

"Reclaiming Our Health" is turning out to be one of the most influential books in my life, and I plan on giving every woman in my life a copy for Christmas this year.

Robbins explodes the myths and outright lies surrounding conventional medicine, alternative medicine, the American Medical Association, the tobacco industry and cancer research. And he doesn't just make wild accusations, he supports his work with a library of footnotes (some of which I've followed up on) and studies. I am honestly stunned and amazed at the horrible decisions made by America's medical community - shunning and destroying alternative approaches over the years, unleashing scare" campaigns to keep us supporting conventional medicine (and our doctors' wallets) and ignoring crucial medical data from alternative sources.

Did you know that the American Medical Association used to be a huge supporter of the tobacco industry & even while our Surgeon General had proof that smoking was horrible for you, they still refused to speak out against smoking... because then they would lose the financial support of the industry (and this didn't just go on for a year or two)? Did you know that chemotherapy & radiation, for most forms of cancer, do absolutely nothing in terms of life-span (sometimes even shortening it)? Did you know that infant mortality rates in the U.S. are higher than most developed, and even some "3rd World" countries, and that most C-sections & hysterectomies are completely unnecessary? Or that midwives have a much better track record (for infant mortality & complications), yet the AMA basically outlawed their use over the past 30 years?

Honestly - I think every single American, especially women and those in medical fields should read this book. It's not a conspiracy theory book, nor is it some crazy person spewing accusations at everyone - it is a brutally honest look at OUR HEALTH, and what is more important?
