Excellent Addition.......2007-03-19

This is an excellent addition to the previous volumes of the St. John's Bible that have come out. I can't wait for the last three! As with the other volumes, the calligraphy is a bit hard to read, but it is being true to the art form. Grogeous illuminations. I recommend that the collector also purchase "The Art of the Saint John's Bible" by Susan Sink or a similar volume for a complete explanation of the illuminations.

This could probably have been condensed into 1 CD as it seems to go on a long time with description before getting down to the breathing exercise bit. (Although it is very soothing to listen to with all the new age music in the background!) The breathing exercises are very effective and it is certainly easier to follow along with Andrew Weil as he does the exercises than to try to figure it out from a book description.

I thought I was pretty good at breathing; after all I've made it to 60 years old quite well with what I knew ;-) but this opens up a completely different way of approaching the subject and one I have really enjoyed.

I have just started on my learning journey, but I am enjoying it immensely.

I do have to agree with one of the other reviewers though, once you have heard the lecture on the first CD, you really don't have to ever listen to it again.

This was recommended to me by a wholistic RN to deal with stress. Use it during a quiet time and practice different breathing techniques that it offers and you feel better and more relaxed.

I've listened to a number of breathing audio's and most leave you wanting more understanding regarding technique or health benefits. Andrew Weil's CD is clear and concise regarding the health benefits of deep breath. The second disc contains several different - 7 in all - breathing exercises. Each with clear instructions on the how to and each demonstrated by the author himself before he guides you through the actual exercise for yourself. Personally, I began noticing the benefit of deep breathing a few day after I started doing the exercises.

I bought this book because I loved the No Cry Sleep Solution. After reading the first three examples and the "hidden" messages, I was completely disappointed and returned the book. I found that I didn't even need to finish reading the chapter to guess at what the message was. In one of the chapters, Pantley uses an example from her own parenting. I thought, okay, now she's going to share with us one of her mistakes and how she learned from it, and was about to give her some credit for being honest with her readers. Unfortunately for me, in this example she comes out having done everything correctly (not doing her child's homework project for him) and a number of her son's classmates' parents are in the wrong. Don't we all know that the child should do his/her OWN homework? And maybe by not allowing him/her to do the homework, we are saying that he/she isn't capable of doing it? Or that mom or dad will always be available to tackle the complicated stuff? I don't think that we need a book to figure that out. These messages are anything but subtle.

Reading this book has been a seriously eye-opening experience for me. While I "knew" that our children are little sponges and take in everything around them, I had no idea how many "hidden messages" I was giving my daughter that were so negative. I truly saw myself as an excellent and attached parent, and I still do, but this book has truly called me to a deeper parenting model. Not everyone comes from a wonderful family of origin, and this book showed me how many things I was passing on that I had no intention of teaching my daughter. I recommend this book to every parent!

Powerful is the only word to describe this book. I can't believe the impact it can have on your life. I think if all parents were required to read it before their children were born our world would be a place I'd be more than happy to raise my 2 children in!

Powerful eye-opening messages that expose the errors in our innocent daily actions with our children. Each chapter opens with a very typical and common parent-child situation. You'll be nodding in agreement as you'll see yourself displayed clearly. Then the author presents a description of the Hidden Message shown in the action and you'll stop and restructure your thoughts on the insightful take on a seemingly harmless interaction. For example, if you always do for your child by packing his lunch, tieing his shoes, cleaning his room then you may be robbing him of the ability to take care of himself. Every parent should read this book - and the younger your child the better. Excellent.

Devoted parents!.......2003-06-18

Once again Pantley has done it. What a fabulous window into myself and my children. I must confess that I think I am a most devoted and conscientious parent. With a background in early childhood education, I feel well prepared to competently reer my two boys. But Elizabeth's book has me re-examining some of my everyday decisions, such as cleaning up after my three year old or staying after him to do it. More importantly, reading certain scenarios was a reminder to me that every interaction with my children has an impact on their fragile little developing personalities. And frequently the impact is more far reaching than I anticipate.

Hidden Messages is not only valuable information. It also compellingly written by an author who is as competent and experienced as she is earnest and compassionate.

Not that impressed with this book.......2007-10-02

I was fairly disappointed with this book, given some of the rave reviews I've read about it. In a consequtive fashion, several of the phrases I looked up weren't in there, to the point where I gave up using it and am just reading the books.

Perhaps it's for the best though, the book flows better without interuption, if at the expense of full understanding. I wouldn't recommend buying this book. It doesn't answer what you need it for -- terms that aren't used anymore, but aren't in the dictionary either.

It still needs expansion; in particular with regard to the dialect of the times to make it complete, and there remain nautical terms that need definitions. I suppose that I need to visit the website or see if there is a method of placing requests for additional words or terms.
Still, I feel that it is a must buy if one plans to read the entire series.

This is a must have book when reading the series as it explains many of the unfamiliar terms. Highly recommend you get it and use it when you are unfamiliar with things talked about in the books. Also recommend Harbors and High Seas: 3rd Edition by the same authors. This will show you where the ships went on Jack's voyages.

Not only does it give you an alphabetical listing of sailor jargon, dictionary style, but also small informational sections about medical beliefs at the time, and brief explanations about how the navy operated. I would purchase it just for the definitions of words, but enjoyed the fact it contained a bit more.

I, too, bought this based on the title, and had to make myself read as far as page 28 before I was sure it wasn't going to get any better. Then I turned to a couple of the essays toward the back and confirmed more of the same. The humor is that of a so-so stand-up comic delivering a series of one-liners with not much hanging them together. Reminded me of having candy corn for breakfast on the day after Halloween -- yech. So unless you like that sensation, I'd skip this one.

I mean, who hasn't thought that themselves? As soon as I heard of the title of this book, I knew I had to read it. So when I saw it on the new book shelf at the library I snatched it up. I read, I giggled, I made my partner listen to me read whole pages aloud and we both laughed uncontrollably.

Celia Rivenbark is like your fun sarcastic girlfriend who says things that make you snort milk out of your nose if she catches you at just the right moment. I am a non-heterosexual, childless, transplanted Northerner but I thoroughly enjoyed her thoughts on marriage, child rearing, and Southern living, as well as her unabashed enjoyment of junky TV (sister!) and contemplations of celebrity foibles ("Speaking of aliens, as I write this, Tom Cruise and Katie 'I'm With Crazy' Holmes are expecting a celebrity pod-baby. Yes! The seed has been successfully planted and now is growing and flourishing in the formerly Catholic womb of Ms. Katie.").

Very funny stuff, and a nice light, quick read either all in one gulp like a pint of Haagen-Daz, or rationed out like the package of Oreos you are hiding from the kids. Consider it as a gift for the favorite slacker-mom in your life (as long as you are reasonably sure she ISN'T one of those dressing her 6-year-old like a skank, because that would hurt her feelings, bless her heart...)

Rarely do books make me chuckle out loud. If you live in the south, or appreciate the differences that makes southern culture unique, you will enjoy this book. Celia Rivenbark divides the book into chapters which discusses the trials and tribulations of life. She has a humorous outlook on life.

The book starts out nicely with describing a trip to Disneyland, and what a bad parent you are if you do not take your child there, buckling under the pressure of taking your child there, and the "fun" that will only happen under the pressure of having fun. Note: Disneyland isn't always fun for everyone.

I love her look on parenting, and the shock and horror of when your child must go from toddler clothes to little girl clothes. As the style of fashion goes from safe designs to where you are having to dress your six year old going on seventeen. It is a shock to the system when you are trying to find clothes that do not make your child look like a street walker. In addition to Disneyland, dressing a six year old girl, she writes about taking a school class to the zoo, the rigors of volunteering for a Halloween festival, and volunteer opportunities that your six year old signed you up for.

This book is extremely enjoyable, and personally I would love to sit down with Celia Rivenbark and have coffee with her. Her book is a delightful look on living in the south, and how one navigates parenthood. I highly recommend this book to those who are wanting to seek out an amusing look into what it is like being a parent in the south.

I thought this book would be funnier! I could have taped a conversation with one of my friends and had better material. If you're looking for a bathroom book or something to read in the tub that doesn't need brain function then this is the book. Just beyond that try "Not Tonite Honey Wait 'Til I'm A Size Six" or a Laurie Notaro book.

Deliberately changes the meaning of God's Word! BEWARE!!.......2007-08-16

Research carefully before you invest your money in this book. I wonder if the Seventh Day Adventist's are trying to trick people into reading their interpretation of the Bible.

There are literaly hundreds of deletions, additions and changes to God's word in this book. The gravity of deliberately changing the meaning of God's word cannot be overemphasized. Psalm 138 equates the sacredness of God's Word with His holy name: "Thou hast magnified Thy word according to all Thy name." Deuteronomy 4:2 says, "Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it." Proverbs 30:5, 6 reiterates this point: "Every word of God is pure. Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar."

Since God's Word is pure and truth, any changes to His Word will ultimately change the truth of God into a lie, with disastrous consequences. Each addition is itself an admission to some part of the SDA teaching that lacks Bible support. Each deletion and change likewise admits to some part of their teachings which the Bible refutes. These changes are made to uphold E.G. White's (SDA's so-called prophet) nonbiblical views. However, by committing this, they place themselves above God Himself.

This is one the most deceptive Bibles of our times.

What is in an interpretation or translation........2007-08-07

Some people writing reviews on The Clear Word must not have read the Preface. It clearly states " The Clear Word is not a translation, but a devotional paraphrase of Scripture expanded for clarity. It is intented to build faith and nurture spirtual growth. It should not be considered a study bible. Excellent translations of the Scriptures are avaliable for such purposes." Meaning other translations exist to be a study bible, like the King James Version or the New King James Version or whatever your choice maybe. A paraphrase uses current language to make the text more understandable. This is Webester's defination of paraphrase " a rewording of the meaning of something spoken or written".

Unless you can read Hebrew for yourself, then any Bible you read is someone elses interpretation. The Bible writers didn't write in english, spanish, french, etc. They didn't even use punctuation in their writings. Someone else translated the Bible into these other languages and added the punctuation marks ( the periods, question marks and commas, etc.). Here is an example of how one comma can make a sentence read completely different. Luke 23:43 - Verily I say unto thee, To-day shalt thou be with me in paradise. Suppose the interpreter put the comma in the wrong place and it actually belongs this way - Verily I say unto thee To-day, thou shalt be with me in paradise. The position of that one comma completely changes the interpretation doesn't. So how do you know their interpretation is correct? Unless you can read Hebrew yourself, you don't. Your only taking someone elses word that your choice of the Bible is translated correctly.

Some Churches have their own Bible. The Seventh Day Adventist do not. They use the same Bible most people use, The King James Version. And as for Ellen G. White, her writings are nowhere to be found in The Clear Word.

Just for your information, there is a book out by Paula Begoun called The Beauty Bible. Just because it says that it is a Bible doesn't make it so, nor was this book intended to be one. Neither was The Clear Word Bible intended to be one. Just a devotional, to help build faith and help with understanding.

So PLEASE people, know what you're talking about before you leave negative comments. All Christian denominations worship the same God and most use the same Bible, so please don't critcize others because their ways are different from yours. There is not going to be only one denomination of Christians in Heaven, but a mixture of believers. Try to remember that God has sheep in other folds.

False Bible.......2007-08-04

This "Bible" is a version that supports unique Seventh-day Adventist teachings. It is not a translation, rather it is a paraphrase, and includes teachings outside the mainstream evangelical thought.

A Review of The Clear Word.......2007-03-20

This is the best paraphrase of the Bible that I have ever seen. Gives an inside look at what's going on and how the verser are interrelated. Would recommend it to anyone for an excellent reading bible or for someone who is new to the Holy Scriptures. Makes difficult texts easy to understand.

Clear and Unbiased -I never enjoyed the Bible so much!.......2007-03-15

The translator of this Bible is a Greek and Hebrew scholar who has his doctorate in these original languages and teaches them at the university level every day. This isn't just somebody's paraphrase. It is more true to the original words and meanings than the King James Version of the 1600's. It has nothing to do with any one denomination. The words and thoughts of the Bible are holy, but the translators are all human beings. When you read this Bible, I believe that you will be as surprised and delighted as I was to enjoy reading the scriptures so very much. This has been a real blessing to me and my friends from many different church backgrounds.

Inspiring & Instructive Bible! .......2005-11-19

Dr. John Maxwell's "Leadership Bible" represents an inspiring and instructive Bible/Guide to be used to train and inculcate pastors, elders, and laypersons in the art of biblical leadership, just as the title suggests.

Using parallels as illustration between historic biblical and contemporary events, Dr. Maxwell shows in lucid detail how the maxims and laws of human nature subject to proper leadership are necessary to the will of G_d and are actually endorsed by Him.

For example, "Lessons in Leadership (from the Book of Luke)":

1. Healthy leaders have nothing to prove, nothing to lose, and nothing to hide.
2. Wise leaders speak the truth, whatever the cost.
3. Effective leaders provide incentives to their followers.
4. Successful leaders discern, then develop, then delegate.
5. Great leaders feel secure enought to express emotions and be vulnerable.
6. The best leaders love the world, serve the many, but train the few.
7. Good leaders practice repetition until others embrace the vision.
8. The most powerful force in a leader's life is love for people.

Leadership Made Spiritual.......2005-09-20

Maxwell succeeds in creating a new way to experience leadership principles and the bible. I have used this as a guide for my youth group's leadership program (highshcool juniors and seniors) and it has been perfect. This is an excellent gift idea for anyone who has interest in leadership and believes their christain faith is critical to their approach.

This Bible is very good It really helped me out and even as a young person I was able to understand what John MAxwell was saying and I think that this is the right way to get anyone started on leadership or those who are interested in taking their skills to the next level!

I'm not sure what I was expecting, but this work exceeded all my expectations on what a Bible with such a title should look like!

Maxwell is known as the peerless master of teaching leadership qualities. His secular works are required reading, and nothing comes close in excellence. How does he introduce such qualities into a Bible, though? Wonderfully!

Maxwell takes every possible aspect of leaderhip (dozens and dozens) and ties them into Biblical characters and situations. There is enough teaching and study material here to occupy one's time for years, and none is fluff.

This is more of a textbook than a Bible, but I guarantee--there is nothing else like it! Unlike so many other attempts which end up balancing a secular principle on a thread of Scripture, Maxwell really searches the Scripture, and the applications he gleans are relevant!

If you ever hope to teach or learn virtually every leadership quality, tenet, or principle found in the Bible--your search is over. Maxwell has found them all!

Also recommended: 'With Joseph in the University of Adversity' ('The Qualities of an Effective Leader' chapter), and 'The Mizraim Prinicples', authored by Dr. Jerry L. Parks

Excellent Resource for Current and Aspiring Leaders!.......2004-01-02

In my humble opinion, The Maxwell Leadership Bible is better than any of the books, simply because Maxwell takes the core concepts from his various books and shows how they are applied in the Bible.

For example, Maxwell includes:

1. Excerpts from the 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership and 21 Indispensible Qualities of a Leader books.
2. Over 100 biographical profiles from people in the Bible.
3. A brief introduction to each book of the Bible and how leadership principles were applied.

4. Short articles and "Read As You Go" notes as you progress through the Bible.
5. Topical index of various leadership materials.

The reader has to bear in mind that this not necessarily a study Bible but a Bible whose focus is leadership. With the failures the world has recently seen in the ministry, politics, and business, Maxwell's Leadership Bible is welcomed read for those who are looking for a biblical basis for how to/how not to lead.

Maxwell's premise is that leaders are to serve others (just like Jesus) and not lord it over them (like worldly "leadership" so often does.). Quite frankly, I find much inspiration from the Scriptures to lead properly and not cut corners when the pressure is turned up.

All in all, a highly recommended read for the Christian who wants to learn (and get encouragement) on how to lead from a biblical basis. The non-Christian can also benefit from the book by considering how the biblical type of leadership so often contrasts with worldly leadership. Everyone will benefit by considering how his/her leadership qualities compare with the Bible.

Works Well For This Newcomer/Latecomer to Word.......2006-08-30

The book weighs a ton and there's lots packed in it. Have not attempted to use the CD-ROM. Index helped me find specific answers to specific issues, since I don't know the program at all and had to hit the ground running. Have not been able to find answers to more esoteric matters, but the book has been invaluable for my quick-fix situations. Legal-specific and more useful on a daily basis than the "Dummies" book my boss bought. Thank you, Payne Consulting Group!!!

The Standard for MS Word in Law Firms.......2005-02-11

Any law firm that uses MS Word has been influenced by the work of Payne Consulting. Payne Consulting was in a conference that went into a committee that worked closely with MS to influence Word and to make it compatible to what law firms got used to with Word Perfect. Interestingly, Word finally has a feature that offers you the opportunity to recover documents if you had not saved it the day before.....wow.....why didn't they do that for corporations.

Well, if you are a Word Perfect user in a law firm today, you will want to open up new vistas by learning MS Word for Law Firms. I recruit in Legal, and this tool is useful to improving your skills and making a transition to a larger law firm possible.

I found the book easy to follow with a lot of useful information in the form of tips and cautions. I purchased the book to prepare for the Word 2002 MOUS exam (and passed). I cannot recommend it highly enough.

A Good Book, But Word is Not My Choice for Legal Documents.......2003-05-26

As a forced convert from Word Perfect, I was looking for a resource that would allow me to do two things: (1) learn Microsoft Word; and (2) integrate it into my practice.

Ms. Payne's book helped me with the first task and made Word a much easier program for me to utilize.

I was somewhat disappointed, however, in the second aspect. I would like to automate my litigation documents to a greater extent, but I couldn't fully realize this goal. At the end of the day, I'd like to turn out better, more polished legal documents, but, I think there are some limitations in either my own understanding or the software that prevent me from being as effective as I'd like. At more than 700 pages, Ms. Payne's book certainly contains a good deal of information and suggestions as to how Word can be used in a law firm environment, but I found it to be most helpful as a Microsoft Word resource.

Riddles, not analogies.......2006-12-08

This book presents far more word games than analogies--the relationships between the words presented are too often not the type seen in the SCAT test, or the "old" SAT. This is not a book to use if you want to prepare your child for the SCAT (testing to join the Johns Hopkins Talented Youth program, for example). I have taken (and scored very well on) many tests with analogies and studied and prepared my daughter for the SCAT, and was hoping this book would be useful for my son. I was ready to throw it across the room. The "right" answers for the relationships between the word pairs are often absurd, or based on the physical appearance of the letters in the word--or, the answer is incorrectly given because it mixes up the word pairs, and the actual pairings make no sense at all!
Instead, get Daily Warm Ups: Analogies; it is a GREAT book, though it leaves you needing more practice.
